2012 BOARD of GOVERNORS Dina Schulz, Chair Frank Broyles, Ron Howard, John Mason, Scott Oishi, Sharon Pfaff, Bob Shema, Kate Shema, Craig Uebele

Chairman’s Chatter Happy YOU Year fellow members! I know we are well into the NEW Year, but what about the YOU Year? When it comes to The Sports Club, I’m curious to find out how much have you invested in yourself? Lets increase the return on your investment.

Our Resort has received the AAA Five Diamond Award for service, facilities and a variety of traveler preferences. To think, we get to experience this crowning achievement each day.

So, with first class amenities surrounding you, what goal have you set out to achieve? Perhaps you would like to take a few strokes off your handicap or add some topspin to your backhand. Maybe you want to trim inches off your waistline or perhaps you just want to meet new friends.

Everywhere you turn, there is something new to experience at the Club. The only way you’ll get even more value out of your time here is by getting out of your comfort zone and regular routine.

You may be a golf member but have you taken a Pilates class? You should, since it will improve the most important part of your game, the mind game! Tennis members, how is your strength training? You want to win TCD…you need circuit training! Fitness members, you are as competitive as the rest, so, if you have never taken a class or participated in our Cool October race, start training now!

I challenged all the Board Members, Committee Members and Club Management to do something they have never experienced at the Club before. A fresh set of eyes will see things differently. I expect this challenge to bring new ideas to the table in an effort to grow our Club experience.

Grab a fellow member and start today. Your Board and Committee Members have already done so and management is in step as well. Did you see Rob Cowan, our Club Manager, in Zumba class? Try out a group fitness class that works with your schedule. You can find the fitness class schedule in the locker rooms and on our club website.

Speaking of the website, don’t let your experience be ignored. Your feedback is important, so make sure you participate in the quarterly member survey available online from March 15-30.

I was one of the original TV producers who helped create CNBC-TV. For years, I heard money managers repeatedly say, “Past performance does not guarantee future success.” I don’t bet on the market, but I’m betting my monthly dues will improve my overall health and wellbeing. Add events, great food and a fabulous facility and I’m expecting double-digit returns. How about you?

See you around the Club,

Dina C. Schulz Chair, Board of Governors

Did you know you can get specialized golf club fittings through the Pro Shop, custom order your tennis gear at the Tennis Desk or have your shoes shined in the Members Locker Rooms? There are several more services offered at the Club, are you taking advantage them?

B

yron said, “To be honest with yourself and to work on the things that needed the most improvement.” As always, it was delivered strongly, simply, and honestly. It seems so obvious and yet in golf, as in life, it is a difficult thing to do. Look

yourself in the mirror and truly identify the things that need the most work and concentrate your efforts there. For Byron, the two objectives were “to not play a careless shot and to chip and pitch better”. Now for most of us that recipe is also a sound one. We often play a shot still thinking about the last shot, what score I might make, the hazard that I am trying to avoid or perhaps even what I need to do when the round finishes. Commit to each shot the best you can and deal with any consequences after the fact. This year I challenge you to watch the PGA TOUR players on how well most of them

chip. Study their technique and live in their imagination. We often get wrapped up in watching the birdies and eagles but do you know that several of their under par rounds come with hitting only 11 or so greens in regulation. Saving strokes around the green is the primary place to shave strokes off your game no matter what level you compete at. Q:

What is the biggest change in the USGA Rulebook this year?

A: In my personal opinion, the most important change is Rule 18-2b, Ball Moving After Address.

Ask Abe Hernandez Head Golf professional 5 | TheSportsClubFourSeasons.com

This rule would penalize a golfer if the ball moved after being addressed. “Addressing the ball” is when a golfer takes a stance and is ready to hit the ball. Factors such as wind, rough terrain and even a rogue squirrel might cause the ball to move just as a golfer is about to swing. Before the amendment, a player was penalized a stroke for the ball moving, that will no longer be the case from 2012 through 2015.

O

ften I’ll see shots that are doomed before the club is ever put in motion. This is very evident in putting. How you set up to the putt helps determine your aim and stroke. Ideally, I like to see golfers have all body parts square to the intended target

line. As well, the position of their eyes should be over the golf ball, which allows them to see the line of the putt. When a student has their eyes too inside the ball they tend to create too much arc in the stroke. This leads to inconsistent contact. Organizing your body lines and positioning your eyes over the ball at address gives you the best opportunity to move the putter back and through, sending the ball on its correct path. Use a mirror to get your body lines situated and take the quick test as demonstrated in the picture

ince the last Sportsline edition, the final 2011 Member Survey results have been tallied. Our sports staff takes the results seriously and sees them as an excellent measurement for how well they are meeting and exceeding the expectations of our members. That said, our sports areas achieved fantastic results, led by Kids For All Seasons with an impressive overall score of 94.7% for the year - the highest department score on the survey! Congratulations to Jill Gellepes and her team! Other scores that resounded with our team were the Tennis Experience at 92.6%, Fitness Professional Instruction at 93.2% and the Group Exercise Experience at 90.6%. These high scores are achieved thanks to the hard working Sports Club employees in the Tennis, Fitness, KFAS and Group Exercise areas. I am proud to work with each one of these employees! Please know, we will continue to strive to serve our members even better in 2012! In our efforts to provide exceptional services and fitness programs for all ages, we have launched Team Fitness For Kids, which takes place every Saturday. This is a great way for kids to be active, have fun, and learn the importance of developing healthy habits at an early age. Our KFAS team has also incorporated Kids Zumba into the Saturday schedule. Saturday has become a great day at the Club for the whole family! Be on the lookout in early March for information about our 2012 summer camp programSummerfest! Once again, we will be offering one of the finest summer sport camps in the area, facilitated by our highly qualified team of certified instructors! See you at the Club.

T

ennis players are intrigued with the art of successful poaching in doubles. This practice can help a team get to the next level. Here are a few tips to help you reach your potential.

Tennis Tip Poaching Successfully in Doubles John Mullman Director of Tennis Instruction

1. When serving to your opponents try and serve down the middle (hit the T). This will bring the ball back through the middle for the net person to attack! 2. The net player should go to the ball (forward) when poaching. Step to the ball - not sideways. (90 degrees) 3. A net player should fake the poach at times. This will distract the returner and make your poaching more effective. 4. Finally, when the point is in play the net player should continue to try and poach when the ball is hit up the middle of the court and deep. Again, fewer angles can be created and the ball will come back through the middle.

Chef Frederic’s

Pancetta, Arugula & Asparagus Linguini

Serves 4 This is a very simple recipe a breeze to create at home with a good glass of dry French white wine. I would suggest a bottle of St. Veran, from my hometown. It pairs well with this dish and is easy to find. Yes, I know it has Pancetta, but who said Pancetta was Italian? Tip to the home chef: I like to cook my Pancetta in water for about 5 minutes so it helps remove some of the saltiness. Ingredients: 1 pound of fresh linguine (pre-cooked Al Dente) 1/3 pound pancetta diced in ¼ inch cubes 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced ½ pound fresh asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1/2 inch pieces (raw) 1 (5 ounce) package fresh baby arugula leaves ¼ cup fresh lemon juice ¼ cup water

Cooking Demo Class

Get confident in the kitchen and sign up for our entertaining cooking demonstration classes. Our very own Club Chefs will share amazing recipes and simple tricks to help you in your own kitchen! These are popular classes and space is limited, so sign up early! March 28, April 26 and June 13 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Racquets Restaurant | $50 per person Register online or contact Membership Services at 972-717-2525.

Foodies Table

Method: Bring a pot of water to a simmer then add the pancetta. Water should be brought back to a simmer. Cook for about 5 minutes. Drain the pancetta immediately and set aside. In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil, garlic, pancetta and asparagus. Cook until pancetta is just crisped. While the pan is hot, deglaze with the lemon juice and about ¼ cup of water. Add the precooked linguini directly into the pan and toss with the arugula and fresh cracked pepper. Serve immediately and enjoy with your glass of St. Veran and a good soccer game (ok fine, football). I am a happy French man!
