H

appy Spring!

By the time you are reading this the Four Seasons Resort & Club will have once again been a gracious host to the 2014 HP Byron Nelson Championship. I hope everyone enjoyed the event and had an opportunity to get up close and personal with many of the worlds top golfers as they played the TPC course and wandered around the property. Continuing good news from the ownership group Blackstone Investments, they have announced some exciting upgrades throughout the property that will affect all membership levels. Starting with a major renovation of the Fitness area and also the hotel Lobby. Expect renovation to begin later this year with the focus of making the property a premier facility and go-to destination in the DFW area. I’d also like to report that things are truly moving forward on the technology front. Spearheaded by Hank Kimbriel from the Board of Governors Technology Committee the club’s IT department and club management team got to view a presentation demonstration of the online bill pay module from our current website development company. The system is very easy to use and it’s implementation and ability to work with the club’s back-end billing system should be a smooth

process. This feature may be the first of a small part of a major technology upgrades at the property. Lastly I’d like to acknowledge Board member Bill Bailey for reaching out to both Rob Cowen and myself with an idea to increase participation in the member survey. Bill’s suggestion was to have a personal letter from both Rob Cowan and myself sent to all the members to remind them of the importance of participating in the member survey. The result of our letter was the highest response rate that we ever experienced. So thank you to all the members who took the time to get engaged and thanks to Bill for the great idea. As a second part to this we are forming a focus group of 8-10 members to review the survey results and get further input. Our intent is to have an open dialogue about the results and action plans while gaining an even deeper understanding of the member’s perspective. Once again your participation in the survey is very important so please let’s keep the momentum going and push the response rate up next quarter to an even higher level! As I have mentioned previously please feel free to contact me or any of our board or committee members if there is anything at all that we can help you with. My email is ringo@ designblockzero.com Sincerely,

Bob Shema Chairman, Board of Governors

Welcome Ashley King

Welcome Back Kevin Golding

This Native Texan began her Four Seasons career in May 2009. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, she joined the Four Seasons Dallas team in Cafe on the Green and shortly after transitioned to the Front Desk. It didn’t take long to recognize this Longhorn’s potential, after just one year she was promoted to Front Desk Supervisor. During her time at the Front Desk she was sent on Task Force to assist with the opening of our sister property, Four Seasons Resort Vail (which was fitting as one of her favorite pastimes is traveling)!

We are excited to announce the return of Kevin Golding as Head Golf Professional here at The Sports Club at Four Seasons. For those of you who do not know Kevin, he is originally from London. He grew up in Bahrain and Dubai, learning to play golf on a sand course. Later, he returned to England to follow his passion for golf and joined the British PGA in 1991. There he spent his time teaching and playing professional golf locally and on the European Challenge Tour. Kevin moved to the United States in 2002 where he started his career with Four Seasons as an assistant before transitioning into the Cottonwood Head Professional position and ultimately working his way up to the Head Golf Professional for the Resort and Sports Club. Kevin is a proud member of the North Texas PGA Section where he enjoys competing in section events against Paul! Kevin’s passion for the Four Seasons culture, service and membership make him a great asset to the team. Please stop by Tower IV to welcome him back or meet him for your first time.

Membership Sales Manager

Shortly after returning from Colorado, she transitioned into the sales realm as an assistant and then moved into the Corporate & Travel Industry Sales Coordinator position; where just last year she was recognized as Superstar of the Month! We are excited to have Ashley join our Membership Sales team and look forward to watching her succeed in her new role.

Meet Keith RosenkranzOur Iron Member

Jessica Asaff, Memeber Relations Manager

rest against. The next day I ran a mile on the treadmill. I don’t know which was harder, the mile run or walking up the stairs to leave the club afterwards.”

me. ‘You’re the guy who couldn’t run around the block three times with my brother. What makes you think you can complete an Ironman?’”

As the weeks passed, Keith’s level of fitness increased dramatically. His swim and run distances continued to improve and he began to entertain the thought of running in the Dallas White Rock Marathon.

“If I’m not flying, I come to the Club every day. I have made several lifelong friends here and truly consider it my heaven! Even though a triathlon is an individual sport, I consider fitness instructors Michelle Miller, Nick Thurman, Lynn Senter, Meg Plotsky and Toni Schuster as teammates. In addition, the attendants in the fitness center and locker room always make me feel special. Why would I want to be anywhere else?”

“My brother-in-law would visit from the east coast every December and run in the race. I thought it would be fun to surprise him and run with him, so I signed up.”

You’ve probably seen him swimming endless laps in the pool or peddling alone on the spin bike. Or perhaps you’ve arrived in the Fitness Center for your own personal workout, seen him running on the treadmill, then departed an hour or two later and noticed him still running! After almost three years as the Member Relations Manager, I started getting curious and lo and behold I had discovered our very own Iron Member. Keith Rosenkranz and his wife Colette joined The Sports Club at Four Seasons as golf members in January 2008 after their twin girls Candice and Kristen had left for college. After realizing January and golf don’t mix well in Texas, Keith took advantage of the fitness facilities in an effort to ‘get off the couch,’ and get into shape. “I was 48 at the time, and I must admit I was pretty soft.” “My first time in the indoor pool was quite a struggle. I couldn’t swim eight lengths without reaching for a wall to 5 | TheSportsClubFourSeasons.com

Keith is a former U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter pilot and combat veteran of the 1991 Gulf War. He has been a pilot with Delta Air Lines since 1991 and he currently flies the B-767ER to international destinations around the world. Keith averages about 11 days flying a month. “Europe is my favorite destination, but on occasion I’ll fly to South America, Hawaii or the Far East. A flying day is always a day off to recover, but I run 6 miles on my layover in whichever city I’m staying in.” With no formal training or coaching, Keith completed the 2008 Dallas White Rock Marathon in 4:12:00. Following the suggestion of a fellow Delta pilot who was also a runner and a triathlete, Keith signed up for his first Ironman triathlon, which consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 miles on the bike, and a 26.2 mile marathon. “I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I was going to turn 50 the following June and thought the Ironman would be a great way to celebrate. My wife Colette laughed at

In January 2009, a few weeks removed from having completed his first marathon, Keith began working with a full time triathlon coach. Gerald Jackson of Negative Split Racing was hesitant to take on a soon to be 50 year old client, but Keith convinced him he had the discipline to do everything his coach would ask of him. Keith gave his coach his monthly flying schedule and he built a personalized training program around it. In addition to the workouts, he taught Keith the importance of training and racing in specific heart rate zones, how to build mental toughness, and how to develop a race day nutrition plan. To prepare for the 2009 Arizona Ironman, which is held in Tempe, AZ each year just before Thanksgiving, Keith completed two sprint triathlon races (500 yard swim, 12 mile bike ride, 5k run); two Olympic distance triathlon races (1 mile swim, 25 mile bike, 10k run); and two half Ironman races (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run). When race day finally came, Keith was more than ready! “Coach Gerald’s advice was simple:

‘Stick to your plan; keep your heart rate at the top of zone 2 on the bike; nail your race nutrition; and don’t be discouraged if people pass you during the swim or on the bike…you’ll pass them during the run. Most importantly, finish with a smile on your face.’” “Race day was incredible. I finished in 13:38:18 and felt like I had plenty left in the tank. I have to admit it was depressing at times watching so many racers pass me on the bike, but I did exactly what Coach Gerald taught me to do. Sticking to the plan, I ran the entire marathon and passed over 500 competitors along the way.” “The months of training can be a grind at times, and race day can be long and arduous, but all of the pain vanishes the last mile leading to the finish line. Hundreds of people line both sides of the course. They call your name and cheer you on as if you’re their hero. As you approach the finish, you spot your family and friends in the stands. It’s a very emotional moment. As you cross the line, the clincher is hearing famed Ironman announcer Mike Reilly call out your name and announce, ‘Keith Rosenkranz, You are an Ironman!!!’” Since then, Keith has completed 5 marathons, setting a new personal best of 3:50:42 in Los Angeles on March 9 at the age of 54. Keith has also completed 10 half Ironman races and 5 full Ironman races. As the oldest in his age group - M50-54 - last November, Keith set a new personal best of 12:51:35 and ranked in the top 750 in the nation for 2013. Keith’s 2014 race schedule consists of the L.A. Marathon in March; the Dallas X-50 triathlon race in June; the Oklahoma City Half Ironman in September; the Austin Half Ironman in October; and the full Arizona Ironman in November. Last year he put in 3,500 miles on the

bike, 1,000 miles running, and 150 miles in the water. As the youngest in a new age group - M55-59, Keith plans to push even harder. “If I’m not flying, I’m in the pool twice a week, on the spin bike twice a week, on the treadmill for 7 mile speed intervals on Fridays and 13 mile runs on Sundays. Long bike rides are reserved for Saturday mornings. I lift weights, stretch religiously, and make as many yoga classes as I can.” “When I’m flying, I have to plan my sleep right. When I arrive at my hotel in Europe, I sleep 3 1/2 hours and then go out for a 6 mile run. Dinner might be schnitzel in Stuttgart, beef in Buenos Aires, or ravioli in Rome. I try to get 6 or 7 hours sleep before the flight to my home base in Atlanta, and then there’s the commute home to Dallas. A good night’s sleep and it’s back to the Sports Club the next morning. Life couldn’t be better!” “I’m often told by friends and fellow members, ‘I could never do what you do.’ If you have the desire to accomplish and the discipline to achieve, you can do it. I got off the couch at 48, so I’m proof that you can.” “The Sports Club facility offers everything you need to accomplish your goals. You don’t have to complete a marathon or an Ironman to be fit and feel good about yourself. There are certainly times when I’d like to sleep in or cut a workout short. But if I’m not mentally strong enough to put in the work in January or June, how am I going to get it done on race day in November?” Keith will turn 55 in June. His motto, “If you’re still climbing, you can’t be over the hill!”

Stephen Tucker, Equipment Manager Often times, we find golfers and non-golfers that don’t know there are significant differences between the machines we use to mow golf greens and what is used on your yard at home. Some of these differences may surprise you. First, a greens mower uses an old fashioned reel verses the standard rotary blade. This technology was designed in the early 1800’s by Edwin Budding who also invented the Spanner (crescent wrench). Unlike the rotary mower, greens mowers height of cut is determined by two rollers instead of wheels. To work properly, both rollers must maintain a deviation tolerance of less than .005” which equates to the thickness of a sheet of paper. Next, reel mowers have a bedknife which stands grass up prior to cutting. Bedknives have to be set at a precise angle so the turf is stood up correctly and ejected properly into a grass catcher. In addition, the reel and the bedknife must be positioned exactly parallel to each other to ensure each blade cuts properly otherwise, you will see significant differences not only in how the greens look but also in the consistency 9 | TheSportsClubFourSeasons.com

at which they roll. The final significant difference between greens mowers and rotary mowers is reel mowers must be level. The bottom of the bedknife and both rollers must be parallel to each other so the machine cuts even across the entire green. A precision ground granite surface plate is used to ensure the machines are parallel within .003”. Up to 6 different machines are used to mow all 18 holes. If each machine is setup with slight differences then your green speeds and ball roll can change from hole to hole which can have a significant impact on whether you sink that putt or you don’t. The process we use is unique and gives us a huge advantage compared to other courses around the world. We invest approximately 700 hours per year maintaining our green mowers to ensure your experience is the best it can be. For those interested in the detail behind this process there is a 9 minute You Tube video I suggest you watch. Go to YouTube and search “advanced leveling of qa5.”

Tim’s Tip

Tim Cusick, Director of Golf Instruction tim.cusick@fourseasons.com Twitter@timcusickgolf www.timcusickgolf.com

Improving your putting can come from better technique, green reading or improved distance control with your putts. I find by improving your distance control you drastically minimize your three putts which will undoubtedly lower your score. A great practice drill for improving distance control is to putt to the edge of the green. By doing this you’re focusing completely on speed. Pay attention to the length and pace of your stroke and stop the ball as close to the edge of the green as you can. As you improve with this drill, you give yourself a chance to lower your score on the golf course. TheSportsClubFourSeasons.com | 10
