A NOTE FROM THE CLUB MANAGER
CONTACT
I
would be remiss if I missed out on the opportunity to thank someone who has become very special to me personally, and who is certainly deserving of a great deal of thanks. I have known Rocco Macri for many years as his relationship with our Club dates back to the late 80’s. At the time that I met him, he was a tennis member and when I harangued him about not being a golf member here as he was with another local club, he was consistent in saying that as soon as he retired and had the time, he would take me up on it. True to his word as he always is, the week he retired, he became a golf member here. Since shortly after that time, he has become incredibly involved in most aspects of the Club. He got involved in the Social Food and Beverage committee, was elected to the Board of Governors through that committee and became the first and only representative from that committee to be nominated and elected Chair. Come December, Rocco is ending his two-year tenure as Chairman of our Board of Governors. We have been fortunate to consistently have phenomenal individuals in that role. As our committee members can attest to, we have never seen anyone so involved in every aspect of the Club. Rocco has made a point of attending almost every committee meeting during the last two years! He knows everything that is going on at all times, which is no simple feat at a club with the breadth of activity as ours. He has been a great leader by example, a mentor to me, a great friend to our staff and an inspiration to all. Please join me in thanking Rocco for his commitment to the Club. For some reason, I don’t think he is going to ride off in to the sunset and he will find a way to keep his finger on the pulse of the Club………..

here to begin... My fouryear tenure as Board of Governors Chairman and Board Member is rapidly approaching completion. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize some of the people who have been very important to me during this period. It goes without saying I was very fortunate to have served our club at the most challenging, most opportune and most exciting time in our history. The highs and lows of redoing our golf courses was of course the pinnacle with the final results being two magnificent tracks that will only get better. There were many other major projects too numerous to mention, with the highlights being the new Members Lounge, Byron’s, the Patio, the Clock Tower, the New Lake on TPC #18, the New Villas, the North End, Racquets, the Championship Court, the Family Pool and the list goes on and on.
On behalf of the BOG and the Committees, I want to thank Club Management, their Staff and all the employees for their Herculean efforts. They not only performed in a highly professional manner but they maintained their composure throughout the completion of the projects. I also want to heartily thank our Board and Committees for their dedicated support and attention to detail in completing our many events and projects in superb fashion.
As with many of you, I have belonged to other clubs and I have never experienced the number and magnitude of such significant additions and improvements that our club has completed these past years. When you step back and think about this, you have to be impressed that this was all accomplished with virtually little disruption and impact to our members during the process.
A big thank you and a hug to my wife Judy for keeping everything organized and running smoothly while I was out attending meetings, outings, events, etc., etc., etc. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

GOLF NEWS IMPROVING YOUR CONTACT ON GREENSIDE CHIPS By Tim Cusick, Director of Golf Instruction

oth our golf courses afford you many different opportunities to play a variety of shots around the green. Personally, I subscribe to the theory of getting the ball on the green and rolling toward the hole as soon as I can. This theory is most apparent when you’re just off the green but elect not to putt. Therefore I’ll use my setup to help chip the ball over the fringe and get it to start rolling like a putt. I stand closer to the ball with a narrow stance. Then move the ball toward the back of my stance with my weight on the front foot. As a result my hands are in front of the ball. This setup is a perfect recipe for making a chipping motion on the ball. The stroke is simply then a putting motion gently striking down on the ball. Vary your clubs depending on the amount of green you have to navigate. Control the roll of the ball and you’ll start saving more pars.
2
1. My body is set up to chip gently down on the ball at impact. 2. With a small chipping motion the club stays close to the target line but up comes up off the ground in the takeaway. 3. Just past impact. Notice how my left side is leading and is firm through the contact. 3

s we enter the winter months the Bermuda grass will start to enter dormancy. When temperatures drop below 55 degrees the Bermuda grass plant starts to shut down growth and conserve energy. It is a defense mechanism, as Bermuda grass is a warm season turf grass. Why is this important to know? As the Bermuda grass enters dormancy it will lose its green color and turn more of tan color. Once the plant is dormant, all growth is halted and the plant will “overwinter” which will protect it from the cold winter temperatures and frost. The disadvantage of not overseeding is that we will need to put out stakes, ropes, signs and even limit cart traffic during the coldest times of the year to protect the Bermuda grass from physical damage. The advantage to not overseeding the Bermuda grass during the winter months is that we do not have to transition back to a Bermuda grass playing surface in the spring. The Bermuda grass will break dormancy in the spring once the day lengths are longer and the soil temperatures begin to rise. The only areas that have been overseeded for the winter months are the par 3 tees, short game area and the driving range tee. These areas were overseeded due the concentrated play these areas receive. We will be filling divots and seeding these areas all winter long to provide an excellent playing surface.

What junior golf clubs are right for your child? It’s as easy as 1...2...3!! 1. Proper shaft length and flex. It’s very important to have correct posture. It’s the foundation of the golf swing. 2. Light, not heavy. Proper weight will allow the kids to make a more fundamentally sound swing. 3. Small grips. Because kids have small hands, this allows them to start the game off with a good grip.

FASHION WINTER FASHION TRENDS IN GOLF By Meredith Lemerand, Retail Director
T
ime to brighten up! Similar to the challenges that we face currently and that were overcome in the 1940’s, fashion is a medley of wartime classic elegance with pop of 1980’s drama. Here are the latest and greatest fashion tips so you can swing in the New Year with glitz and glam. Be inspired by the iconic styles of decades past, but unafraid to put your modern twist on it Ladies First… • This season is plum ambrosial! Mix it up with a cocktail of cordials and tantalizing textures. Embossed fabrics and cozy cords create a palette that is very berry. • Cinch it in! Grandpa’s cardigans and boyfriends’ sweaters look polished and figure flattering with a slim belt to complete your look. • Bling it on! Oversized meets understated when you mix a flashy accessory with a muted outfit. Don’t be afraid to step out with a statement. And for the Gents… • The name of the game is rugged elegance… Perfectly poised between urban chic and your cowboy roots. A little bit country - A little bit rock and roll. Dress up your jeans with a silk Robert Graham and you are ready for the party. • Load up on leather from your jackets to your boots. Piling it on you can’t go wrong. • Mad About Plaid! The English countryside lends inspiration for cool weather dressing. From buffalo plaids to Houndstooth checks, this comfortable and casual yet sophisticated style is a staple in every wardrobe. lready, our Cool October fundraising is weeks behind us, but the appreciation for our members continues. Once again our expectations were exceeded by the generosity and giving spirit of many of our members. Between the Tennis, Spinning and Golf Marathons, over $80,000 was raised for the Irving Healthcare Foundation - a stunning total. Even more amazing is that after 11 years of the golf marathon, 10 years of the tennis marathon, and 3 years of the Spin-a-thon, over $500,000 has been contributed. We thank you all!!!
It is an understatement to say that 2009 was a challenging year. However, the good news is that 2010 is almost here, and I am looking forward to a superb year of sports activities at the club. Much of my optimism stems from the knowledge that we enter the New Year with the best, and most experienced professional sports staff I have seen in my 17 years at The Sports Club. Each professional brings expertise, knowledge, experience, a commitment to personal service, and a strong desire to help you maximize your experience in your chosen activity. So...here’s to the New Year, and the best possible sports experience for you. And don’t forget to let us know how we can improve your enjoyment of the Sports Club activities and facilities. Cheers, and see you at the Club!!! SPORTSLINE

TENNIS NEWS WINTER TENNIS TIP By John Mullman, Director of Tennis Instruction
T
he return of serve is a critical component to a successful tennis game. Yet, it is one part of the game that is often not worked on with vigor and conviction. The return of serve starts the point for the defending team - therefore it is very important to be efficient in this area. Here are a few easy steps to incorporate into your practice. First, make sure you split-step right before the server strikes the ball. This will enable you to be balanced and hit the ball early. Second, turn your hips and shoulders when you determine forehand or backhand return. Thirdly, depending on first or second serve speed of the ball, be ready to adjust your back swing. The harder the serve, the shorter the back swing! Finally, determine where you want to hit your return before the serve is hit (crosscourt, down the line, or maybe a lob). Practice your return in a timely and disciplined way, and you will start controlling the point more often. Good luck and practice, practice, practice!

he Sports Club Junior Tennis Program creates a positive environment for kids to develop a love for tennis…a sport of a lifetime. The initial focus is on stroke development to create a strong foundation. Progression occurs through instruction on technique, footwork, movement and ball control. Fun, innovative drills for all ages and levels are used to improve each skill. As students learn the basic skills, they begin to experience actual playing situations, scoring and tennis terminology. All practice sessions are conducted with a maximum of 5:1 student to instructor ratio with child safety a priority. This fall Junior Program Director Darren Snyder added specialized equipment designed to enhance the kids learning experience. Through use of low pressure tennis balls and mini tennis nets, kids are learning to control the ball faster, and enjoy success at earlier ages than ever before. The tennis balls are also soft and brightly colored creating a safe and dynamic learning environment. Video equipment is also being used to help children visually learn improved technique, footwork and movement. Before and after video helps kids reinforce the progress they have made during each session.

ith the holiday season soon approaching, it is often hard to stick with our daily routines during the holidays. Our physical activity level changes as well as our eating habits!! The average person gains approximately 1 pound between Thanksgiving and New Year’s according to research published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Although the gain is much less than what most people think, the accumulation of adds up over time.... Here are some tips to help you maintain, not gain during the holiday season while still enjoying your family and friends and all that the holidays mean to you!! 1. A Wedding to Remember
By Katy Taylor, Director of Catering
A
wedding reception is often a reflection of a bride and groom – their personalities, tastes and values. So, we are particularly honored when a Member chooses to host such a personal celebration with us – and showcase our property to their friends and family members. One particularly memorable Member celebration was the wedding of Shawn Lombardi and David Spalding. Their wedding began with a beautiful outdoor ceremony for one-hundred of their nearest and dearest. Thankfully the weather was perfect for the intimate, evening ceremony. After the ceremony, the guests retreated to the glass-enclosed Pavilion, where Todd Events worked their magic to transform the space into a romantic, enchanted banquet – complete with hundreds of strands of crystals hanging from the exposed-beam ceiling. Executive Sous Chef, Frederic Angevin, along with Catering Manager Melissa Lehman, designed a five-course menu that included a Crab and Mango Salad, Calvados and Apple Sorbet and Pan Seared Beef and Atlantic Salmon. Chef Randy Gehman further delighted the guests’ palettes with a stunning wedding cake filled with alternating layers of Sponge Cake with Lemon Curd and Chocolate Buttermilk Cake with Kahlua. It was a magical celebration – which was truly unforgettable. Many thanks to Visual Image Photography, Todd Events and DJ Marcus Rollins for a fabulous time. “The Four Seasons special events group and Melissa Lehman made our dream wedding come true. They provided full service in the planning of our wedding. We cannot express in words how wonderful all of the staff was that touched our wedding. They made sure every detail was perfect from the personal valet on the wedding day to the wedding night suite. The wedding reception dinner was excellent and the cake was absolutely beautiful. They were instrumental in the planning of our honeymoon at the Four Seasons in Florence, Italy. Our dream wedding became a reality.” Shawn and Dave Spalding SPORTSLINE
