SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATORS Dec/Jan 2022/23
Welcome to the December/ January issue of Benchmark magazine
The end of 2022 brings a sigh of relief after not having to be on lockdown trying to avoid highly contagious viruses.
If anything, this year felt more ‘normal. We managed to meet up at tradeshows and were able to shake hands and share moments’ unmasked.’ However, the supply chain shortage has affected the security industry chain. As a result of this global shortage of semiconductors, the production of a wide range of electronic devices, including security solutions, continues to be hampered.
Russia’s war on Ukraine has impacted the UK and Europe enormously. This is not just because of the threat of war on our doorstep but also the knock-on effect on the cost of living. For example, the UK’s dependency on Russian produce, such as petroleum, metal for construction, and some food products, has resulted in an increased cost of energy and other everyday necessities.
However, the security industry has put a brave face and has found ways to maintain its commitment to continue innovating and advancing in this field, as we have seen on the Benchmark Innovation Awards 2022.
Innovations have seen Artificial Intelligence (AI) implemented creatively as machine learning becomes more refined. Today, AI is essential to most companies’ vision for their products and the solutions they offer clients.
Using AI to enhance searches and find evidence is a very effective tool in forensics when evidence is needed and helps to avoid the risk of ‘Human error’. Video surveillance systems that combine AI and analytics provide business intelligence and can be used for business purposes, such as analysing customer behaviours and traffic patterns in a retail environment.
Video analytics usage is here to stay. According to Allied Market Research, it is projected to reach £19 million by 2027, a 22.7% increase in compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2020 to 2027.
The festive season is approaching, and reviewing customers’ and installations’ needs at this time of the year might be a good idea. Britain is facing a winter filled with uncertainties, with threats of power cuts, higher utility bills, inflation and the cost of living crisis.
Also, to reduce energy costs, some people are talking about spending as much time as possible at the gym, working in pubs or coffee shops, or anywhere outside the house to reduce energy consumption, leaving their properties vulnerable to criminals.
Good news! Business for installers might become more pleasurable as big manufacturers start to roll out loyalty schemes on apps and their installer’s portals, such as the one from Hikvisoin’s Hik Partner Pro. Watch out for them; you can win all sorts, from branded paraphernalia to actual products, which can add to your margin gains. What’s even cleverer is that you can have the whole library of helpful videos and product specifications ready to use in your pocket!
Our end-of-the-year wish for you is that your business flourishes and may adversity become a gateway for opportunities in 2023. Merry Christmas and a Happy start of the new year!

2N achieves Secured by Design accreditation on intercoms and access unit readers
2N, a manufacturer of internet-enabled intercoms and access control systems, has announced that all of its intercoms and access unit readers have become Secured by Design (SBD) accredited.
SBD is the flagship UK police initiative to help ‘design out’ crime through the use of high-quality, innovative products and processes. To achieve SBD status, 2N’s intercoms and access unit readers (the 2N Access Unit 2.0 and the 2N Access Unit M), had to adhere to rigorous test standards required by the police, which assessed their resistance to forced entry. When installed along with the 2N Security Relay, all of these products now have the right to carry the SBD logo.

Beyond CCTV, how Hikvision AI-powered solutions bring a new dimension
Technological advances mean that the security industry now enjoys the highest levels of sensitivity, bandwidth and resolution – no longer is one aspect more important than the other. However, to significantly change security effectiveness for organisations and end users, the industry needs solutions beyond CCTV; looking into Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Mobile solutions is the way forward.
Flexibility is also an essential aspect that needs to be considered. The video security industry should not be any different from other industries. People are becoming more digital in their everyday lives, from online banking to shopping and communicating through social media instead of traditional texts or phones.
It is becoming increasingly popular to be able to access cameras from smartphones instead of having to go to a control room. However, monitoring cameras 24/7 is costly and inefficient financially. Mobile apps offer security buyers round-the-clock access without human intervention, and manufacturers shouldn’t ignore this when
