HORSE RIDING with Cassandra Sweeck
C
assandra Sweeck started horse riding at the young age of 9 years. After begging her mother for three months her dream began. She initially started riding twice a week until it became every day.
Cassandra admits:“ It’s a very expensive hobby and costs range from maintaining your horse to stable fees. It can cost a couple of thousand rand per month depending on how involved you want to be in horse riding.”
How does it work:
Start with the basics - i.e don’t go buy a horse straight away as you don’t know how much you’ll enjoy this hobby. When you start horse riding it isn’t that expensive to go for lessons, it is when you start to progress to the next level that it can get pricey. Get the right equipment, you’ll need to purchase a helmet, pommel with padding (frontraised area of saddle) and jodhpur boot.
she outgrew him in 2 - 3 years and had to get another horse, one with less vices so that she could successfully compete in competitions. Horses take experiences from previous owners and some need to be retaught so that they can perform better. Cassandra now rides Rhapsody - a Schoolmaster horse; a well trained horse that brings much more experience into the completion of courses in the competition. Children generally start out riding ponies and then eventually move up to horses. Dressage, Cross Country and Showing each have their own unique discipline and it helps if you have a multi-talented horse. Rhapsody is such a horse, one who Cassandra won many competitions with.
Cassandra confirms that you can keep your horse forever however when you buy that horse, you are responsible for that horse and ensuring that the stables feed and maintain it. On the occassion you would Though her brothers and sister also need to make arrangements for the were into Motocross at the time, vet to visit. when Cassandra was offered the opportunity to own her own pony Cassandra was part of a yard where she couldn’t resist. riders would train horses. Can you make a career of it?
Cassandra confirms that you can make a career out of this hobby or sport however you would need a sponsor as certain completion prizes will not sustain you every month.
SAFETY ASPECTS
Horses have their own minds and accidents do happen, which is why it is important to ride with the correct gear. In 2011 Cassandra fractured her pelvis after falling off her horse, having a riding experience of 9 years.
Her advice?
If you start and love to ride, continue to do it, just keep going. Find a yard that treats you and your horse as family and this will make a big difference and impact on your life.
What’s next for Cassandra? After her injury in 2011, Cassandra has decided to focus on healing before she starts to ride again.
She will also be moving to the United States to be close to her parents and hopes that it will present an opportunity to get back on a horse again.

ike Morgan began running in his school years. His father ran the Comrades and now he and his wife Mandy run the marathon together. As a Fitness and Well Being Trainer for all ages in South Africa and the United Kingdom it is no wonder that Mike has taken part in so many races including: 10 Cabbage Patch [15 km] 10 Surfers Challenge [18 Km] 22 Buffs Marathon [42 Km] 22 Two Oceans Ultra [56 Km] 10 Comrades [89 Km] 6 Washie 100Millers [160 Km]
His Tips for training: - Divide your year into Phases/ cycles of training - Always Plan for some down time to refresh the body and mind - Training time should be 8 - 12 weeks before peaking for a goal as follows: * Base training 3 - 4 weeks * Starting small 5 - 7 km every second day (depending on your fitness level) His first running shoe was a Nike. After two years, he decided to try other brands, but these did not give him the same performance as his first pair. Mike says: “The comfort, cushioning and durability Nike gives, works for me.” 10

Mike Morgan admits that a major contributor to one’s training success is having the right Running Shoe that suits you. Though Nike is Mike’s personal choice, it is important to stick to the brand that works for you. So how does one go about choosing a running shoe that suits you and where do you start? Choosing a pair of running shoes today can be a little more technical than we would think and some come with a price tag that often makes novices and even seasoned runners nervous, however it becomes easier with these simple steps:
1 - Know your foot type
Knowing your foot type, normal arch, high arch or flatfeet - this helps in the selecting of the perfect running shoe.
2 - What is your end goal
The mileage and distance you intend to cover with these shoes is also an important deciding factor and how many runs you will ultimately participate in will help you find the perfect fit.
3 - Your Weight
Your weight is a key element in determining which running shoe to purchase.

If you have flat feet and are a heavy ultra-distance runner then you must look for a shoe that offers you both stability and motion control. Popular running shoes - Nike - Asics - New Balance

Fridays Are MAGIC
Mike confirms that he finds them extremely comfortable and the diverse colours appealing. Though the shoes may not last longer than 2 years (depending on your running activity), they would be a good start and the prices are reasonable. Do the wet imprint test to know where your feet tire. Types of arches can be tested by walking on wet/ soft sand, getting out of the swimming pool and walking on flat concrete, stepping with a wet foot on brown paper or cardboard. Compare to the following: NORMAL ARCH Runners can wear shoes from all categories dependent on their weight, mileage covering and years running. LOW ARCH Often found on over-pronating runners. Stability or motion-control shoes will provide more arch support. HIGH RIGID ARCH Runners need the impact protection that comes from cushioned shoes with less arch support.
Yes guys Friday’s really are magic, and not just because it’s the first day of the weekend. Any trading card enthusiasts will be familiar with the term “Magic” or rather “Magic the Gathering” cards and for those who aren’t – imagine controlling the elements and having powerful races and creatures at your every beck and call…if that sounds like something that you are interested in then “Magic the Gathering” is just the thing for you. The collecting and swapping of cards, gruelling tournaments and fun gatherings are just the beginning with this hobby. Test your cunning, wits, strategy and deckbuilding skills at these gatherings. Friday Night Magic events give seasoned players and all interested newcomers the opportunity to play a few rounds and trade amongst one another for that “got-to-have” card. here’s a remarkable 900 species of bird in South Africa and about eight percent of the world’s species is endemic to South Africa - which means you won’t find these species anywhere else in the world naturally. Bird-watching is more than just a hobby, it connects you to nature in a really fun, inexpensive and not to mention, educational way. When you first start bird-watching you can expect to learn the history and finally identify a rewarding connection with many species of wild birds.
the wetlands of the West Coast, including Langebaan Lagoon and Verloren Vlei and the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, which is also home to a number of interesting birds. If you’re interested in seabirds, you could visit places along SA’s 3,000km coastline. Cape Town, however, offers the greatest variety.
Useful links for bird-watchers AKA birders:

ountains and forests, plateaus and unique reserves – it can all be found in Mauritius, one of the most beautiful places on earth. Lush vegetation, dormant volcanoes, rivers, waterfalls - nature shows all what she is capable of. Crystal blue sea waters with sandy beaches and a colorful underwater world; it is a paradise for divers and beach lovers. The island has done a rapid development path. For five centuries it has evolved from an unoccupied land to a prestige resorts area. The flora of Mauritius is composed of 700 species of plants, many of which are endangered mainly because there’s only about 2% of their natural habitat left, and also because introduced plants and animals compete and destroy their fruits and seedlings. Sadly, there’s not much to mention about
the Mauritian wildlife. Of the 45 bird species originally found on Mauritius, only 21 have managed to survive. The best known representative of Mauritius birdlife was the dodo, which became extinct in 1681. Although the dodo has become a stereotype for extinction, Mauritius still has several incredibly rare bird species including the Mauritius Olive White-eye. This species is listed as Critically Endangered following the severe decline in its population size because of predation by introduced mammals. Others on the endangered species list are the Mauritius kestrel (once the rarest bird on earth), the echo parakeet (still the rarest of that species) and the pink pigeon. The pink pigeon is the largest of all the pigeons and doves found in Mauritius and is another highly endangered species. This bird has a colorful pink crop and lives in the forest, eating leaves and fruits. The captive breeding program saved this

species from extinction, and now there are about 250 individuals that remain in the wild. The Mauritius Parakeet, also known as Echo Parakeet, was also saved by the captive breeding program. There were only about 20 individuals in 1986. Today, there are nearly 200. The intensive exploitation of land resources of the island, combined with the population increase, has led to natural landscapes being forced to occupy less than a quarter of Mauritius. Remaining mostly in the SouthWestern part of the island, the last decade has seen many Mauritian conservationists fight to protect the insignificant 1% of original forest remaining on the island. Like in Costa Rica, sustainable tourism here is an integral part of the national strategies. Green tourism is rapidly growing through the number of reserves, the largest being the Black River Gorges National Park, which extends over 16,680 acres and provides a haven to highly endangered native plants and animals. Visitor access is restricted at many reserves, as most are tiny in size and enclose the last vestiges of rare species. Since 1990, Mauritius has made considerable progress in environmental management. A number of projects and programs for the conservation of terrestrial flora and fauna are being implemented. A series of projects have been undertaken to improve air quality such as the phasing out of leaded petrol, the importing of cleaner diesel, banning chlorofluorocarbons and monitoring vehicular emissions among others.
An Integrated Water Resources Management Plan has been developed and actions are being taken to reduce unaccounted for water. Sand mining has been banned since 2001 and coastal rehabilitation work undertaken to reduce erosion. Mauritius is an island really dependent on its marine environment; marine parks and fishing reserves have also been proclaimed. It is truly incredible that nowadays this small country near Madagascar has a strong and positive impact on the environment of the world.

One of the first and most important things you as the owner of your dog/ cat need to do is to be with your dog/ cat the entire time. Some people tend to leave their animals alone in these vulnerable times, which result in the animal feeling anxious and unfortunately most times this leads to the 6 animal running away. Please make sure to stay with your furry companion during these holidays, especially when the firework displays are going on. 7 Now let’s talk about the possible solutions. Try some of the following steps to keep your dog calm and safe: 1
Keep your dog indoors during this period (even if its the entire night)
2
Distract your dog as much as you possibly can. Eg: Play games with your pet, give them treats, groom them, etc.

Be upbeat and talk to your pet in a friendly tone to make them feel like there is absolutely nothing to be afraid of.

Ancient Greece has had a tremendous influence on world literature and culture and has in some sense fashioned how we see and interpret our world by their medical, architectural and mathematical contributions. It is not a surprise that one of the most successful societies in the history of the world have an extensive array of these stories and myths. New Year festivities traditionally start on the first day of the month and continue until the fifteenth, when the moon is brightest. In China, people may take weeks of holiday from work to prepare and celebrate for the New Year. Legend has it that in ancient times, Buddah called upon animals and asked them to meet him on New Year. Twelve animals came and Buddah named a year after each one of them, he said that the people born in each animal’s year would have some of that animal’s personality. Those born in the year of the horse are cheerful, skillful with money,

perceptive, witty, talented and good with their hands. According to tales and legends, the origin of Chinese New Years started with the battle against a mythical beast called the “Year”. Now according to these legends, the “Year” looks like an Ox with a Lion’s head and lives in the ocean. On the night of New Year’s Eve, the “Year” will appear and come out to harm people, animals and their properties. Later people found that the “Year” is afraid of Red colours, fire and loud sounds. So for self protection against this beast people have formed the habit of putting Red Dui Lian in front of their houses, launching fireworks into the sky and hanging lanterns everywhere at year end. In many areas, the highlight of

PRO CULTURE the lantern festivals is the Dragon dance. The Dragon that might stretch a hundred feet long is made of silk, paper and bamboo. Dui Lian is a form of traditional literature in Chinese history. It dates back to the Tjing Dynasty in 290AD. A simple definition would be, Dui Lian is a Chinese traditional poem with only two sentences, and a short term to recapture the whole idea. The two sentences should also follow the ‘rule of pairs’, referring to the meaning of individual words, simple nouns such as ‘Earth’ to ‘Sky’, ‘Fish’ to ‘Bird’, as well as short terms like ‘Flower falls’ to ‘Swan returns’. Dui Lian is normally pasted around the main gate of a Chinese (a.k.a. ‘Men Lian’), especially during the Lunar New Year, showing best wishes. The type of lanterns used in Chinese New Year are usually decorated with a red paper shell. Some lanterns have candles inside of them for illustration. Most of them are just made of red paper for decoration purposes only. On Chinese New Year, the lanterns are usually hanging in front of the doors or inside houses. In some parts of China, lanterns are a must for the Yuan Xiao festival (15th of the first month of the traditional Chinese calendar.) The New Year’s Eve dinner is the most important dinner for the Chinese. Normally this is the family reunion dinner, especially
for those with family members who stay away from home. Dinner served on New Years eve is normally fish however dumplings are also an important dish in Northern China. The majority of the Chinese people will have New Years Eve at home instead of a restaurant. Fireworks are used to drive away evil in China. After 12:00PM on New Year’s Eve, fireworks will be launched to celebrate the coming of the New Year as well as driving away of evil. It is believed that the person who launched the first fireworks in the New Year will have good luck. Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese New Year vary widely. Often, Chinese New Year’s Eve is an occasion for Chinese families to get together for the annual reunion dinner. It is also traditional for every family to thoroughly cleanse the house in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and make way for incoming good luck. Children and unmarried people are given red envelopes (called “Hong Bao”) with money. Everyone wears new clothes as this signifies new beginnings. The festival is a celebration of renewal and arrival of spring. It is customary to visit friends and family during this time, bearing gifts of food and red envelopes for unmarried relatives and children in the family. This is also a time to pay respects to deceased family members. Altars are placed and decorated with lucky symbols and before the family meals are enjoyed, food is offered to family ancestors. NEW YEAR ...
By Natalie Singer APSO COO
I
t’s that time of year when we often stop to ask whether we’re in the right job or even “what next”. Depending on what stage you’re at, here are some things to consider before leaping into a new career adventure.
Just finished studying? Entering the world of work can be difficult, summed up best by the adage “can’t get a job without experience, can’t get experience without a job”. Of course it’s tough but there are definitely things you can do to improve your chances. Consider volunteering. Yes it means going into an environment where you’ll be expected to work without being paid but this is a great way to get work exposure, experience and that

much needed reference/recommendation. I began my career as a volunteer cub reporter and before long the company offered me a small stipend to cover my travel costs and soon after I was able to apply for a paying job on the basis of that experience and the work reference from the editor. Temping is a great way to gain experience and earn some cash. Often employers are willing to take on younger inexperienced workers in a temp role and this can be a great way to get into the job market. In South Africa, 32% of all first time workers who temp secure permanent employment in the first 12 months. Don’t turn anything down. It may not be your dream job or even something that directly relates to your studies but all work experience is good experience. Most of us start in administrative or junior roles and through the references and networks we make we’re able to find our next career move.
Profusion Magazine
PRO fession Be realistic. We’d all like to earn lots of money but the reality is that today’s market is tight and employers have a lot of choice. When you’re new to the world of work you can expect to receive a significantly lower salary than people who’ve got experience. Don’t turn down a role simply because you feel it isn’t enough money, you need this stepping stone to get your career started!
and marketing. If one of these areas interests you, why not develop these skills and approach your boss with the opportunity to do this ‘in-house’ saving them time and money. And when you’ve proved your worth, approach them again for a possible change in title and increase in salary.
Feeling bored?
Shift focus
If you’ve been doing the same job for some time, you’re likely to be bored and in need of a new challenge. Whilst you may not necessarily want to change employers, you’d love to be re-invigorated. Why not approach your boss to find out if there is room to learn new skills or to assist in other departments? They’re likely to be impressed with your initiative and may have a great opportunity for you.
Less than 20% of Generation X (30 – 45 year old) is working in the industry for which they studied and the same is likely true of Generation Y (under 30s). This means that many of us have chosen to make a career shift at some point. This is easier said than done, especially if you leave it late in your career. Remember that if you want to move badly enough you’ll be willing to take a step sideways and often backwards to achieve that goal. This has implications on job title, responsibilities and of course salary. Do your research before you make the leap so that you understand what it’s going to take to shift focus successfully.
Be prepared to take on these additional responsibilities at no extra salary and reassess in a few months when you’ve got some ammunition to take to the boss on how you’re contributing and adding value. Then you’re in a stronger position to re-negotiate your salary.
Small business = BIG opportunity Many people incorrectly assume that because they’re working in a small company there is no room for growth, however the opposite is often true. This is because in a small company you’ve got the opportunity to expand your knowledge, skills and role beyond your existing job title and if you do a good job, you’re likely to be given this additional responsibility and the increased title and salary too. Small companies don’t have the budget to employ specialists and often have generalists in the office handling administration and perhaps outsourcing key skills like IT, accounts

Recruiters
1. Follow the instructions
Read the advert carefully and only apply if you meet at least the minimum stated requirements. Nothing irritates recruiters more than someone who applies and who is clearly unsuitable. If the advert calls for you to provide references, certificates or a specific cover note, ensure that you provide these as requested.
2. Follow Up
Why not give the recruiter a call a day or so after you’ve sent your CV to see if he/she received it. Don’t nag, just politely ask for confirmation of receipt and enquire when they will be short-listing for interview. This is a great way for you to put yourself top of the recruiter’s mind, especially if they’re swamped in lots of CVs.
3. first impressions last!
Your CV and cover letter are your personal advert. Ensure that they are neat and free of any errors like spelling, grammar or layout. Ask someone to proof read it for you just in case you missed something.

4. Keep your word

n September 2013 the staffing industry was formally constituted as a profession and this means that individuals working (or choosing to work) as recruiters will now be able to pursue a career including qualifications and professional designations. Previously individuals who work in recruitment will tell you their stories of how they “fell into recruitment”, usually after being interviewed by a recruiter for another opportunity and where they were identified as having the right profile/skill set to be successful. Nowadays individuals can choose to study to be a recruiter and to begin their journey to professional recognition.
Many people are surprised to learn that recruitment is a sales job. Recruiters need to be highly influential and are constantly selling – their services to clients, vacancies to potential candidates, and candidates to clients. If you’re not comfortable being on the phone, making cold calls to potential clients and candidates, then this is not the job for you! the

Often, successful recruitment consultants were previously in sales, marketing or customer service roles although HR experience can be advantageous, provided you are willing to do the business development and sales tasks too.
Recruitment can be rewarded and frustrating
It’s not an HR job, it’s a sales job!
Successful recruiters generally have following key traits: • Personable nature – extrovert • Strong sales ability • Inquisitive • Good organisers • Influential • Resilience
Solutions, advises people who are considering entering recruitment, “you need to have love, passion and patience for recruitment and entrepreneurship is critical. You need to realise that you’re a sales person.”
Most recruiters work on a contingency basis and this means that they do not receive any fees from their clients unless they successfully place a candidate. In today’s highly competitive market good recruiters generally only place 1 in every 5 job specs that they work. Veronica rates this as the worst part of the job, “when clients give the job spec to 20 other agencies. I don’t mind competition but this practice has led to lack of feedback and delays”. Being unable to control the outcome is probably one of the biggest challenges. Tania Henkel, manager at F and I Career Solutions, hits the nail on the head, “recruitment is one of the only industries where the “product” can change its mind about being sold. That is frustrating – going through the whole process of recruitment and then candidate drops you for no valid reason”. Of course, tackling these challenges head

on can mean the difference between just surviving or thriving. Alam Ellahi, owner of Ellahi Consulting says, “I love everything about being a recruiter. I look at the industry challenges and adversities as opportunities that keep me on my toes and ahead of the game. Most of all I love being in a position to guide and coach applicants with selling themselves thereby helping them to find their dream job and of course, assisting my clients to find ideal employees”. Theo Nwamdi, managing director of Interim Consulting, echoes this sentiment, “recruitment enables me to change people’s lives and allows me the incredible opportunity to also write my own cheque in terms of commissions”. He does advise interested individuals to also see the tough side of recruitment, “be prepared to accept rejection...loads of it. It can be frustrating when clients shift the goal posts and candidates turn down the offer”.
It’s critical to remember that recruitment is a ‘people business’
PRO fession Of course, job seekers should also think about how they can work better with recruiters to increase their chances. Tania says that she was surprised by the lack of work ethic and by the disrespect candidates show to recruiters, “almost every time I have a block of interviews scheduled at least one candidate will not pitch up”. After nearly 20 years in recruitment, Alam has the following to share with aspirant recruiters, “be humble, down to earth, approachable and customer centric...don’t be greedy and arrogant, when people are seeking employment they feel vulnerable and exposed. Do not abuse the power you think you have, you are there to serve your client and the candidate. Take time to guide and motivate people where you can, you never know when you can make a big difference to someone’s life. You will make money and stay in business if you are ethical, complaint, focused on service delivery and above all honest!”
Managing the expectations of job seekers is tough, especially when you receive literally hundreds, if not thousands, of CVs each month. Often, recruiters are also left waiting for feedback from the clients leading to delays Interested in becoming a recruiter? ver the years South Africa’s standard of education has drastically declined to a state that may later on present itself as an alarming prospect for our children. Although the statistics vary from province to province, the overall figures are shocking. Statistics indicate that some 4,7 million people are totally illiterate and another 4,9 million adults are functionally illiterate (left school before Grade 7). Illiteracy is highest in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces. According to the 2012 General Household Survey (GHS) conducted by Statistics South Africa (StatsSA), the adult literacy rate is qualified as the self-reported ability to read and write short sentences. Although, according to 34
December 2013 | January 2014
independent researchers and analysts these statistics can create a false sense of security regarding the actual levels of literacy in South Africa. In reality well rounded literacy skills enables one to write and read fluently, well-structured and grammatically correct sentences beyond the limitations of a few “short sentences.
Being literate should rather be considered as an average to above average ability to fully express oneself through the medium of writing and at the very least be able to comprehend reading material on an intellectual level that increases ones general knowledge . Profusion Magazine
The loose categorisation of the word “Literacy is an indication as to how deteriorated the state of education actually is. This particular survey conducted by Statistics South Africa found that 2.643 million people have difficulty reading or, are completely unable to read this constitutes 7% of the population. In calculating the literacy rate, the GHS assumes that anyone with an education level equal to or higher than Grade 7 is literate. This means that 18 958 million people, who are over the age of 20 and who have a highest education level of between Grade 7 and 11, were not asked if they have any difficulty reading or writing. This goes to show that the statistics concerning literacy levels are merely an estimation of the number of individuals who are illiterate and the true number is undetermined.
PRO LEARN Over the years the South African Government has poured millions into efforts towards bettering the current state of education, but as partakers and residents of this nation there are quite a few ways in which to improve the literacy levels of our people, as parents to ensure that the future generation of our nation do not suffer the same obstacle. Encourage your children to ask questions when reading stories as to improve their general analytical skills, another method which can improve writing skills is to implement a daily diary which will challenge your children to jot down their daily activities or thoughts and in so doing, become accustomed to writing at a younger age which makes it easier for them to adapt to the demands of school and the work place as they grow older.
One of the main concerns are the schools in rural areas with little means to obtain the appropriate learning materials and teachers whom have not been properly equipped and trained to raise the standards of education for their children. With little or no effective monitoring systems set in place to oversee or evaluate the teachers the quality of teaching can have a detrimental effect on whether or not students excel in their literacy skills. As unreal as it may seem, government schools today are also facing similar problems. Competent teachers can make a big difference in a student’s level of improvement. However, South Africa being a thriving nation as a unified community should come together to address the issue of illiteracy and strive towards making a difference by implementing methods which can aid to improve the literacy levels of every South African young and old.

s silly season has rolled ‘round again, and year-end functions are coming up, it might be a good idea to reconsider what you consider to be good social etiquette. As with many things that we think are common sense, turns out, the simple idea staying under the legal limit when drinking with your boss, is not so common. There are certain rules to ensure that you do not ruin the fun for everyone. If you do not want to attend sensitivity training, or have a strict no-alcohol policy implemented, it might be best to keep a couple of simple rules in mind.
Social Etiquette at office parties your behaviour. It is sometimes difficult to take someone seriously after they decided to dive-bomb into the office koi-pond! Alcohol has been the downfall of many a “normally responsible” employee. Please remember the open bar is not your friend!!! There are few things that will make your manager look at you in a different light as quickly as your enthusiastic rendition of the Macarena after your fifth or sixth drink!
Dress codes are usually either relaxed or implemented for social events, and you should take heed. If the dress code is formal, please comply and look your best, it shows Eventhough year-end functions are intended that you respect the requests made and will to be good natured events for team members make you feel like you fit in. PRO PLANNING This is not the time to have a heart to heart with your manager about your prospects for growth within the company over the next year. The year-end function is an event where colleagues can get to know each other better and reconnect without the pressure they face every day; it is also a time to reflect on the year’s triumphs. Discussing something confidential at such an event is completely inappropriate, and will definitely annoy those around you. Take part. These events take a lot of effort to plan, and usually, they don’t come cheap. If you do not want everyone to think you are not a member of the team, take part in the activities, make an effort to mingle. The people in attendance are your team and support structure for the next year, do not let them feel that you do not like them, or do not want to be a part of their team. You will be known by your friends. Not all companies invite partners to social functions, but if you are taking a plus one, please remember that their behaviour will reflect on you. It is important to make sure they know of the dress code, or prepare for any activities you might be taking part in like hiking or swimming. Let them know who your manager is before they meet, it would not do to have your wife mentioning the skimpy Christmas bonus to your manager, thinking he is just another hard-done-by employee. If you are attending alone, this is not a good time to let Shirley in accounting know that you have had a crush on her for the last six months. If you are unattached, and attracted to a co-worker, a year-end function that has lent you some courage might lead you to do something you will regret later.
Profusion Magazine
Social events at work are held mainly to boost morale and to let employees feel appreciated for their efforts; they should not be a source of stress but if you behave inappropriately, stress is a definite possibility. No one wants to be embarrassed at work, and eventhough every one commits a faux pas at some stage, it is best to try and avoid them. Mostly an innocent mishap will be greeted with some good natured banter, but a serious embarrassment will reflect negatively on you for a long time. For the most part, year-end functions are good fun and a time where co-workers can re-establish good working relationships in a relaxed environment. Just be careful not to let the festivities make you the entertaining anecdote your colleagues will be telling their families over Christmas lunch!

Terrific Tales
O
ne day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her. Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was those chills which only fear can put in you. He said, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.” Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid. The lady asked how much she owed him. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, “And think of me.” A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn’t erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches

change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan. After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door and was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady had gone and then noticed something written on the napkin. The lady wrote: “You don’t owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I’m helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.” Under the napkin were four more $100 bills. The waitress made it through another day. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard…. She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered, “Everything’s going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.”

Originally Christmas was not a Christian holiday but rather a Roman pagan traditional festival that celebrated the winter solstice, also known as Saturnalia. To the Romans the winter solstice held the promise of the return of springtime and earthly renewal. It was also a time of honouring the god of agriculture and on the 25th they celebrated the birth of the sun god Mithra. It was during Saturnalia that the tradition of exchanging gifts was established. Several other pagan traditions have been incorporated into the Christmas celebration we know today. The

Digital art can be created on laptops, tablets and mobiles regardless of where the artist is located and can be uploaded online in a matter of seconds. The internet is also a hub of information from people all over the world – you can learn from others, be inspired, and share your passions. These are a few aspects that have kept me in the field of digital art. Like many artists, I started drawing and painting when I was a child. Finding tutorials online explaining step by step how to “paint” digitally in Photoshop, I became hooked. And I’ve never looked back.
creating digital art I learned from tutorials freely available on the internet and through trial and error. Deviantart is a great place to find tutorials created by artist for other artists. Also, taking a figure drawing class could greatly improve your drawing. Even if you draw cartoons and have no interest in learning realistic anatomy, figure drawing will still improve your drawing because it teaches you how to create volume, how to pose characters, how to create pleasing line shapes, and how to draw in perspective. Figure drawing has improved my drawing ability immensely, even though my style is very cartoony.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
BROKEN OPEN by Elizabeth Lesser
W
e all know what being broken means, but what does it mean to be broken open? There are many things in life that put us down ranging from stressful times in the economy to the loss of a loved one and even a divorce. These things break us down little by little and regularly people have trouble healing that brokenness and as a result we become depressed, cynical or negative.
T
he Hobbit plays off in a time before Lord of the Rings and before the resurfacing of the one ring. In this time Bilbo was far younger but also a lot less adventurous. Used to his simple and comfortable life in Bag End, Bilbo was surprised to find an uninvited guest upon his doorstep. After some convincing, the still unsure Bilbo joined a party of dwarves along with Gandalf to undertake an adventure.
The book Broken Open aims to show people that once we are broken at our lowest point we can break that “shell” wide open and start to heal and think about and do things differently. This book aims to provide people with the knowledge that making changes in our lives can affect how we function on the inside. It strives to enable people to be able to get back up when life knocks them down. This book gives information on certain practices that we can apply to help us cope with stressful times and loss by looking at spiritual and psychological practices that have been found to have a positive effect on the human psyche.
He had no idea what he was getting himself into. This adventure entails various standoffs with trolls, goblins, elves, dwarves and even a giant spider or two. It is in this novel where much that you wonder after Lord of the Rings gets explained, like where Bilbo got his mithril mail from and how he came upon “Sting” his short sword. This novel also covers a bit of “the battle of the five armies”. Although most parts of the novel are a journeying adventure, there are parts that prove quite entertaining. I love this novel mostly for its main antagonist “Smaug” the dragon. Cunning, resourceful and the slightest bit egocentric as all dragons are; Smaug proved a challenge not only for this party but also for the people of Esgaroth a faction of the men of Dale.
This book is a must for all who face the question: “Will we be broken down and defeated, or broken open and transformed?”
This novel is a great read and has also been labelled one of the most influential books of our generation.
