Cari lettori,

grandi potenze mondiali del settore automobilistico.

Altro tema di grande attualità rimane la crisi dei profughi, una emergenza rispetto alla quale la Repubblica Ceca continua a distinguersi come uno dei paesi europei meno disposti all’acco‑ glienza. Le recenti critiche delle Nazio‑ ni Unite – che hanno denunciato come inaccettabili le condizioni di deten‑ zione dei profughi in Repubblica Ceca – ci hanno indotto a una riflessione più ampia sul rapporto tra cechi e mi‑ granti, senza mancare di ricordare che nel mezzo della ex-Jugoslavia, dove l’emergenza umanitaria raggiunge l’apice, il team più numeroso di volon‑ tari stranieri è proprio quello ceco.

Cambiando del tutto argomento, vi segnaliamo la trasferta che abbiamo

fatto a Berlino alla scoperta del quar‑ tiere di Rixdorf, un antico borgo boe‑ mo nascosto nella parte più popolare e multietnica della capitale tedesca.

Fondato nel XVII secolo da profughi cechi, Rixdorf è un luogo dove la sto‑ ria continua a traspirare in ogni an‑ golo, dalla caratteristica Böhmische Straße al Comenius-Garten.

Another very topical issue, is of course the refugee crisis, an emergency towards which the Czech Republic continues to stand out as one of the less willing European countries to welcome them. The recent criticism from the United Nations, who have denounced the detention conditions of refugees in the Czech Republic as unacceptable, have led us to a broader debate on the relationship between Czechs and migrants, without failing to mention that in the middle of the former Yugoslavia, where the humanitarian crisis is reaching its peak, the largest team of foreign volunteers is actually the Czech one.

Completely changing subject, we highlight the trip we made to Berlin

to discover the Rixdorf district, an ancient Bohemian village hidden in the most popular and ethnic part of the German capital. Having been founded in the seventeenth century by Czech refugees, Rixdorf is a place where history continues to breathe in every corner, from the distinctive Böhmische Straße to the Comenius-Garten.

Browsing through this issue, besides the usual columns dedicated to the main events scheduled, and new publications, you will certainly find a number of other articles of interest, such as the one dedicated to Prague ham, a speciality born a century and a half ago, known internationally, which we have tried to tell the history of.

È questo l’interrogativo al quale abbiamo cer‑ cato di dare una risposta nell’articolo di apertura della rivista. Si tratta di un quesito di primaria importanza, non solo perché la più grande azien‑ da industriale ceca è di proprietà del colosso tedesco, ma anche perché il comparto delle quattro ruote è uno dei pilastri sui quali si regge l’intera economia ceca. This is the question to which we tried to provide an answer in the opening article of the magazine. It is a question of primary importance, not only because the largest Czech industrial company is owned by the German giants, but also because the motor industry is one of the pillars on which the whole Czech economy rests. The impression is that after the clamour of the first weeks, the affair, at least to a certain extent, has been partially scaled down, and that the Czech Republic, nevertheless, has the credentials to continue being one of the

The scandal could have an impact on the Czech GDP and industry, but the government and analysts have downplayed the risks

Il terremoto che ha sconvolto la Vol‑ kswagen, tradendo l’immaginario di buona parte dei consumatori mondia‑ li – i quali vedevano nella compagnia automobilistica tedesca un solido baluardo di efficienza e trasparenza – potrebbe avere rilevanti conseguenze anche nella vicina Repubblica Ceca.

In primo luogo perché lo scandalo dei motori truccati si riflette sulla Škoda Auto, che è di proprietà della Volk‑ swagen e che in passato ha utilizzato i motori incriminati della capogruppo

tedesca. Più in generale, perché l’onda lunga dello scivolone teutonico po‑ trebbe così incidere in modo negativo sia sul Pil ceco, sia su quello della vicina Slovacchia. L’industria delle quattro ruote in entrambi i paesi ha infatti una importanza fondamentale per l’econo‑ mia nazionale e dipende strettamente dal settore automobilistico tedesco.

Ma andiamo per ordine. Dopo un pri‑ mo momento di esitazione e di imba‑ razzo, seguito alla dirompente notizia dei motori diesel truccati, è stato evi‑

The bombshell that struck Volkswagen, which betrayed what many of the world’s consumers had imagined, having previously seen the German car company as a solid stronghold of efficiency and transparency, could have significant consequences for the neighboring Czech Republic. Firstly, because the scandal of the rigged engines reflects on Škoda Auto, which is owned by Volkswagen, and in the past has used the implicated engines of their German parents. More generally, because the tidal wave caused by the Teutonic blunder could well have a negative effect both on the Czech GDP, and that of neighboring Slovakia. The motor industry in both countries has in fact a fundamental importance to the national economy and relies very heavily on the German car industry.

But first things first. After a moment of hesitation and embarrassment, following the shocking news of rigged diesel engines, it became clear that not only Volkswagen but also the companies they owned, Seat, Audi and of course Škoda, were embroiled in the affair.

The company based in Mladá Boleslav has confirmed that in the past, it used one million, two hundred thousand EA189 diesel engines for the Fabia, Octavia and Superb cars. The spokesman Jozef Baláž had to admit it, but pointed out that “all current Škoda models sold in Europe are equipped with engines which respect the Euro 6 emission limits”.

Despite the impressive number, Czech consumers don’t seem to be distressed or affected, and according to the ČTK survey, among retailers of new and used cars, the sales appear to be pro-

dente che nell’affaire ci fossero dentro con tutte le scarpe, non solo Volkswa‑ gen ma anche le sue controllate, Seat, Audi e ovviamente Škoda.

La casa di Mladá Boleslav ha con‑ fermato di aver utilizzato in passato un milione e duecentomila motori diesel EA189 per le vetture Fabia, Octavia e Superb. Il portavoce Jozef Baláž ha dovuto ammetterlo, preci‑ sando però che “tutti gli attuali mo‑ delli Škoda in vendita in Europa sono dotati di motori rispettosi dei limiti di emissioni Euro 6”.

Nonostante il numero imponente, i consumatori cechi non sembrano essere rimasti scottati e, secondo sondaggio Čtk, fra i rivenditori di auto nuove e usate, le vendite starebbero procedendo in modo regolare. Deci‑ sivo sarà però anche l’atteggiamento degli acquirenti fuori dai confini na‑ zionali, visto che Škoda dipende in maniera decisiva dall’andamento dei suoi mercati stranieri.

Nel frattempo il governo di Praga ha cercato in tutte le sedi possibili di mi‑ nimizzare.

Il disegno di legge di bilancio per il 2016 è basato su una stima di crescita

ceca il prossimo anno del 2,5% del Pil. Il ministro delle Finanze Andrej Babiš ha spiegato che l’economia nazionale poggia su basi solide e che le fluttua‑ zioni estere non dovrebbero condizio‑ narne l’andamento.

Ottimista nel complesso anche il ministro dell’Industria e del Com‑ mercio Jan Mládek, secondo il quale la Škoda Auto ha grandi chance di superare l’attuale situazione senza particolari danni. Lo stesso Mládek non ha escluso che la vicenda pos‑ sa influire sulla futura crescita del prodotto interno lordo, ma ha co‑ munque minimizzato. L’impatto, a suo parere, si potrebbe aggirare tra lo 0,1%, e lo 0,2% in meno del Pil, considerando anche una eventuale riduzione, seppur temporanea, delle esportazioni verso il mercato tede‑ sco, il principale target delle vendite all’estero delle aziende ceche.

Ma se sul fronte delle stime governati‑ ve sul Pil predomina l’ottimismo, così come nei pareri degli economisti più citati dai media nazionali, emergono anche segnali meno rasserenanti. La cronaca delle ultime settimane, da quando a metà settembre è scoppiata

In the meantime, the Prague government has tried to minimize the importance in all possible opportunities.

The draft of the Finance bill for 2016 is based on a Czech growth estimate next year of 2.5% of the GDP. Finance Minister Andrej Babiš explained that the national economy rests on a solid foundation, and that the foreign fluctuations should not affect the performance.

Also apparently optimistic overall, is the Minister of Industry and Trade, Jan Mládek, according to whom Škoda Auto has big chance of overcoming the current situation without any major damage. Mládek has not ruled out that the affair could affect

the future growth of the Gross domestic product, but has underplayed the consequences. The impact, in his opinion, could range between a 0.1%, to 0.2% decrease in the GDP, considering a possible reduction, albeit temporary, of exports to the German market, the main target of sales of Czech companies abroad.

However, if optimism prevails regarding the government estimates on GDP, as it does in the opinions of the economists referred to by the national media, less reassuring signals have also emerged.

Reports from recent weeks, since we saw the bombshell hit us in the middle of September concerning the rigged engines, have displayed early omens not to be taken lightly.

For example, the news in the Czech Republic, of the halt of the Roomster II project, the new model of Škoda Auto,

Per esempio, la notizia dello stop in Repubblica Ceca al progetto Roomster II, nuovo modello della Škoda Auto, che tutti davano pronto per la produ‑ zione in serie. Il gruppo Volkswagen avrebbe invece deciso di annullare tutto ed è facile pensare che anche questo possa essere una conseguenza dello scandalo dei software alterati. È anche trapelato che l’agenzia britan‑ nica Vca (Vehicle Certification Agency) per la certificazione degli autoveicoli, fosse restia ad ottobre a concedere l’omologazione ai nuovi modelli die‑ sel di Škoda Auto. Alla fine – dopo alcune settimane di attesa, che sem‑ bravano far prevedere il peggio – è dovuto intervenire di persona il mini‑ stro dei Trasporti Dan Ťok per chiedere il via libero definitivo. It was also revealed that the British agency VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency), responsible for the certification of vehicles, was reluctant to grant approval to the new diesel models of Škoda Auto in October.

Eventually, after a few weeks of waiting, causing many to foresee and fear the worst, the Minister of Transport Dan Ťok was forced to intervene personally in order to ask for the definitive green light. The newspapers wrote that the caution from VCA was probably due precisely to the Volkswagen scandal.

There are also doubts about the future ownership of Škoda. Minister Mládek has hinted that Volkswagen, in order to cope with the astronomical fine for

Negli ultimi cinque anni, secondo Cze‑ chInvest, l’agenzia nazionale per gli investimenti, gli investitori stranieri hanno creato 10mila posti di lavoro con l’arrivo di oltre 1,4 miliardi di euro nell’industria automobilistica ceca. Gli investimenti del 2014 sono raddop‑ piati rispetto all’anno precedente e le prospettive appaiono rosee. L’Auto‑ land ceco sembra destinato a crescere ancora di più, con le aziende intente a individuare nuove aree dove realizzare i propri stabilimenti e ad assicurarsi la forza lavoro disponibile. The two countries have the highest car production figures worldwide: 197 vehicles per thousand inhabitants in Slovakia and 107.5 in the Czech Republic.

This data allows Prague to place itself even in 15th position worldwide with 20% of the production of Czech manufacturing and the exports of the country depending on the motor industry.

Besides Škoda, the protagonists of these results are Toyota, Peugeot, Citroën and Hyundai for the car manufacturers, plus a host of big names in the components sector.

In the last five years, according to CzechInvest, the national agency for investment, foreign investors have

sporto adeguate. I tre produttori che vi operano – Kia, Psa Peugeot Citroën e Volkswagen (in attesa dell’annun‑ ciato arrivo di Jaguar Land Rover a Nitra) – sono persino riusciti sinora, grazie a mercati di sbocco alternativi, a superare anche l’impatto delle san‑ zioni alla Russia, il paese verso il quale prima della crisi ucraina era destinato il 15% dell’export slovacco.

created 10 thousand jobs with the arrival of more than 1.4 billion Euros in the Czech automotive industry. The number of investments in 2014 doubled those of the previous year and the future prospects seem to be rosy. The Czech Autoland looks set to grow even more, with companies intent on identifying new areas where they can set up their factories, and ensure themselves that the workforce required is available.

According to a study which was just released from CBRE, the demand for production halls or warehouses from the

automotive sector is today at a record level. In the first half of this year, it has made up a third of the total demand, compared with just 15% last year. The increasingly frequent tendency of companies to choose hitherto neglected locations, such as South Moravia and North Bohemia, is becoming more and more noticeable.

The situation is much the same in Slovakia, which shares strategic points attracting investors with the Czech automotive sector. The central location in Europe for one, in addition to qualified

personnel, government incentives, a stable environment for doing business, direct access to the European market and adequate transport infrastructure.

The three producers who work there, Kia, PSA Peugeot Citroën and Volkswagen (with the announced arrival of Jaguar Land Rover in Nitra pending), have even managed so far, thanks to alternative markets, to overcome the impact of the sanctions on Russia, the country which before the crisis in Ukraine, was the destination of 15% of Slovak exports.

La pineta esplosiva The explosive pine forest È iniziata, nei pressi di Břeclav, la bonifica di una pineta dalla fama inquietante dove, oltre alle pigne, è possibile raccogliere proiettili e bombe di artiglieria. All’ombra degli alberi vi sono infatti ancora dissemi‑ nati migliaia di ordigni inesplosi, dal

tempo della seconda guerra mondia‑ le, e avventurarsi fra i sentieri a cer‑ care funghi, o semplicemente per una passeggiata, significa farlo a proprio rischio e pericolo.

Ci troviamo nel Boří les, un bosco di pini situato proprio accanto all’area

paesaggistica e culturale di LedniceValtice, una delle zone di maggior ri‑ chiamo turistico del paese. La regione è quella della Moravia meridionale, di cui è nota la pregiata produzione vinicola, e a poche centinaia di metri passa il confine con l’Austria.

Durante il conflitto mondiale qui, nel Boří les, funzionava la fabbrica di munizioni Muna, una delle più grandi e strategicamente importanti del Terzo Reich. Nel 1945, alla fine della guerra, i soldati dell’Armata rossa distrussero il sito industriale e lasciarono il terreno cosparso di ordigni, così come in buona parte è rimasto sino a oggi.

Raggiungiamo la pineta su un treni‑ no che parte da Břeclav e che si ferma, dopo pochi minuti di viaggio, in una

stazioncina appena fuori dal centro abitato e immersa fra gli alberi.

I giornali, nel dar notizia dell’inizio dei lavori di bonifica, ricordano che negli ultimi settant’anni in questo luogo hanno perso la vita e sono rimaste ferite diverse persone, avventuratesi nella selva, magari alla ricerca di re‑ siduati bellici.

Il capostazione è una signora sorri‑ dente, con poca voglia di dilungarsi e con la tendenza a minimizzare: “Non credo che qui ci sia nulla di

così pericoloso. A quanto ne so, l’ultima disgrazia risale al 1990, quando morì un ragazzino. Da allora la gente è più attenta, sa che deve rispettare delle precauzioni per evi‑ tare sorprese. Per il resto ci vado con la mia famiglia a cercare i funghi.

Certo, meglio stare attenti a dove si mettono le mani”.

All’inizio del sentiero, affisso al primo albero, un cartello suggerisce: “Atten‑ zione, nel bosco possono scoppiare delle munizioni!”. La giornata è grigia

e piovigginosa. Il bosco basta guar‑ darlo per sentirvi aleggiare un’atmo‑ sfera di angoscia e tragedia.

Un tempo il territorio era dominio dei Liechtenstein, uno dei casa‑ ti più ricchi e potenti dell’Impero austro-ungarico. L’antica famiglia aristocratica nel XVIII e XIX secolo avviò tutta l’intera zona a grandi lavori di sviluppo. Valtice e Lednice si distinguono ancora oggi per l’in‑ confondibile atmosfera bucolica e ogni anno richiamano centinaia di

At the beginning of the trail, atta‑ ched to the first tree, a sign says: “At‑ tention, in these woods ammunition may explode!” The day is grey and drizzly. It is enough to look at the fo‑ rest to feel an atmosphere of anguish and tragedy lingering.

migliaia di visitatori, attirati dagli sfarzosi palazzi aristocratici, immersi in giardini dalla bellezza mozzafiato e idilliaci laghetti.

Furono proprio i Liechtenstein che nel XVIII secolo decisero di realizzare la grande pineta del Boří les, cambian‑ do volto a quella che sino ad allora era stata una distesa di terreno incolto e non fertile.

I tedeschi, allo scoppio della guer‑ ra, ormai padroni del Protettorato di Boemia e Moravia, non scelsero casualmente questa zona per la loro fabbrica bellica. Nel cuore della Europa occupata dalla svastica e in prossimità degli importanti snodi ferroviari di Brno e Vienna, era in‑ fatti un luogo ideale per produrre proiettili di artiglieria, granate e

cannoni antiaerei, da inviare poi nei vari fronti di guerra.

La fitta vegetazione – altro aspet‑ to vantaggioso – mimetizzava il sito industriale e lo proteggeva dai bombardamenti alleati. La Muna si estendeva sotto i pini per circa 100 ettari, in un complesso sistema di depositi sotterranei, collegamenti ferroviari interni ed edifici destinati

It was actually the Liechtensteins in the eighteenth century, who decided to create the large pine forest of Boří les, changing the face of what until then, had been a stretch of infertile wasteland.

The Germans, at the outbreak of the war, now rulers of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, did not ran‑ domly choose this area for their war factory. In the heart of Europe occu‑ pied by the swastika, with the ma‑

jor railway hubs of nearby Brno and Vienna, it was in fact an ideal place to produce artillery shells, grenades and anti-aircraft guns, which were then be sent to the various war fronts.

The dense vegetation, another ad‑ vantageous feature, camouflaged the industrial site and protected it from Allied bombing. The Muna stretched under the pine trees over 100 hectares, in a complex system of underground storage, internal railway connections

La manodopera era costituita dagli abitanti del posto, ma vi lavoravano anche un gruppo di ebrei ungheresi, rinchiusi in un vicino campo di concentramento, e nume‑ rosi prigionieri di guerra, soprattutto russi e francesi. L’intero insediamen‑ to produttivo era presidiato dalle famigerate Unità testa di morto delle SS-Totenkopfverbände.

Nel 1945 i soldati dell’Armata ros‑ sa, durante la liberazione della Cecoslovacchia, procedettero a far saltare in aria il sito industriale. Le alte sfere sovietiche – visto il nuovo assetto al quale era destinata l’Eu‑ ropa centrale, con Praga destinata a finire sotto la sfera di influenza di Mosca – stabilirono infatti che la Cecoslovacchia non avrebbe avuto

bisogno in futuro di una fabbrica come la Muna.

Le deflagrazioni non fecero così ri‑ manere traccia del sito produttivo e dei suoi fabbricati, ma sparsero per tutta la zona un numero incalcolabile di proiettili e ordigni di vario genere.

Si calcola che possano essercene an‑ cora decine di migliaia, nonostante una prima opera di bonifica eseguita

durante gli anni del regime, quando questo bosco, così vicino alla cortina di ferro e alla terra di nessuno, era presidiato dalle guardie di frontiera.

The workforce was made up of locals, but a group of Hungarian Jews also worked there, who were locked in a nearby concentration camp, and numerous prisoners of war, most of whom were Russian and French. The entire production facility was guarded by the notorious Death’s Head Units, of the SS-Totenkopfverbände.

In 1945, during the liberation of Cze‑ choslovakia, the Red Army soldiers

proceeded in blowing up the indu‑ strial site. The upper echelons of the Soviets, having seen the new struc‑ ture destined for Central Europe, with Prague set to end up under the sphere of influence of Moscow, they decided that Czechoslovakia would not need a factory like Muna in the future.

The explosions did not allow traces of the production site or its buildings to remain, but spread countless bul‑ lets and explosives of various kinds

throughout the area. It is estimated that there could be tens of thousands more, despite an initial reclamation work carried out during the years of the regime, when the forest, so close to the Iron Curtain and the no man’s land, was controlled and overseen by border guards.

“At that time the Boří les certainly wasn’t a place to come for our ou‑ tings. Indeed it was better to stay well away, if you did not want to

arouse the suspicions of the border authorities and their police dogs”, some cyclists tell us, before returning to riding their mountain bikes.

After 1989 the situation changed.

The signs that stated “Pozor!” (“At‑ tention!”) were not enough to stop nature lovers, who were attracted by paths among the trees, or those on an adventure driven by the desire to find a place which had remained fen‑ ced off and preserved for nearly fifty

I cartelli con la scritta “Pozor!” (“Attenzione!”) non sono sufficienti ad arrestare gli aman‑ ti della natura, attirati dai sentieri fra gli alberi, oppure coloro che si avven‑ turano spinti dal desiderio di scoprire un luogo rimasto incellofanato per quasi cinquant’anni e con tutta l’aria

di avere tanti segreti ancora da sve‑ lare. Non parliamo poi dei tanti ap‑ passionati di residuati bellici, che nel bosco ci vanno con il preciso intento di portarsi a casa qualche ricordino e con tutti i rischi che questo comporta.

Insomma, quello che per tanto tempo era rimasto una foresta quasi impe‑ netrabile, ora è diventato un via vai continuo di escursionisti.

Queste le ragioni che hanno indotto il governo di Praga a porre un rimedio,

prima che l’ennesima tragedia giunga a funestare il Boří les. La definitiva opera di risanamento è stata affi‑ data alla Lesy Čr, l’azienda forestale di stato. I lavori riguarderanno 500 ettari di terreno e si protrarranno per i prossimi dieci anni. L’auspicio del go‑ verno ceco e degli abitanti della zona è che la pineta del Boří les, una volta bonificata, possa tornare a far parte, a pieno titolo, dell’area paesaggistica e culturale di Lednice-Valtice.

impenetrable forest for so long, now has become a continual flow of hikers coming and going.

These are the reasons which led the Prague government to look for a so‑ lution before the umpteenth tragedy ends up darkening the Boří les. The final work of restoration was entrusted

to Lesy Čr, the state forestry company.

The work will cover 500 hectares of land and will continue for the next ten years. The Czech government and local residents mainly hope that the pine forest of Boří les, once reclaimed, will return to fully being part of the cultural landscape area of Lednice-Valtice.

(22 settembre) Profughi, Praga contro Bruxelles.

I ministri degli Interni degli stati Ue stabiliscono a maggioranza di approvare il sistema delle quote obbligatorie di accoglienza proposto dalla Commissione Ue. La Repubblica Ceca vota in senso contrario, così come Slovacchia, Romania e Ungheria. Praga insiste su necessità difendere confini esterni Schengen: “Siamo pronti a sostenere tutti i provvedimenti concreti della Commissione in questa direzione” è la posizione del governo ceco espressa dal premier Bohuslav Sobotka.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(29 settembre) Sale popolarità di Miloš Zeman.

Il capo dello stato può contare secondo ultimo sondaggio Cvvm sul sostegno del 55% dei cechi. Si tratta di una quota più elevata di 10 punti percentuali rispetto alla precedente rilevazione di giugno. A fidarsi di Zeman sono soprattutto gli anziani, così come coloro che votano a sinistra (Čssd e Ksčm).

Fra istituzioni dello stato, stabile al 46% la fiducia verso governo.

Cronaca

(5 agosto) Cechi impauriti da migranti. In Europa si distinguono per essere il popolo che manifesta maggiore timore verso questa emergenza. E’ quanto emerge da Eurobarometro, secondo il quale ben l’81% dei cechi non vuole immigrati da paesi extra Ue. In nessun altro paese dell’Europa si raggiunge una quota di avversione così elevata.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(19 settembre) Inaugurato a Praga il tunnel Blanka.

Coi suoi 6,4 km di lunghezza diventa la più lunga galleria cittadina d’Europa destinata alla circolazione automobilistica e fa scalare al secondo posto un tunnel analogo di Madrid. Al taglio del nastro provvedono il sindaco Adriana Krnáčová e il cardinale Dominik Duka. E’ costato 43 miliardi di corone. I lavori di costruzione iniziati nel 2007, si sarebbero dovuti concludere nel 2011. L’opera fa parte del più ampio progetto di circonvallazione di Praga.

Economia, affari e finanza

(4 agosto) Disoccupazione ceca ai minimi in Ue. La Repubblica Ceca (4,9%), dopo la Germania (4,7%), è il paese Ue con la quota meno elevata di senza lavoro, secondo dati Eurostat. Sul versanti opposto la Grecia, 25,6%. La media Ue è del 9,6%, che sale all’11,1% nei paesi dell’Eurozona.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(10 agosto) Aumenta clientela alberghi.

L’incremento del numero degli ospiti, considerando anche pensioni e camping, nel secondo trimestre è stato del 10%, un trend positivo che si rinnova per il quinto trimestre consecutivo in Repubblica ceca. Lo annuncia l’Ufficio ceco di statistica. In aumento sia la clientela locale che quella straniera.

A proposito di quest’ultima, al primo posto sempre i tedeschi (+14,8), che rappresentano più di un quinto degli stranieri. Da sottolineare il boom dei cinesi (+47%).

-----------------------------------------------------------------(12 agosto) Sigarette ceche fra meno care in Ue. Un pacchetto costa in media 75 corone. Il mercato ceco si caratterizza anche per essere uno di quelli dove sono meno diffuse le sigarette di contrabbando.

Nel 2014 hanno rappresentato una quota del 3,1% dell’intero consumo, secondo quanto emerge da uno studio condotto a livello europeo da Kpmg.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(13 agosto) Penta entra nel mercato media.

Il gruppo, uno dei più potenti di Rep. Ceca e

Slovacchia, compra il 100% di Vltava-Labe-Press, compagnia editoriale che pubblica i quotidiani a diffusione locale Denik (630 mila lettori al giorno), proprietaria anche dalla società tipografica Novotisk.

Già firmato il contratto di acquisto con la tedesca Verlagsgruppe Passau. Prevista inoltre l’acquisizione del 51% di Astrosat Media, società che pubblica il National Geographic Česko -----------------------------------------------------------------(14 agosto) Nuova zona industriale in Moravia. Il governo dice sì al progetto Dul Barbora a Karvina.

Previsto uno stanziamento di 1,2 miliardi di corone per la realizzazione del nuovo insediamento produttivo, in una ex zona estrattiva. Più di 200 milioni di tale somma saranno spesi per l’acquisto del terreno della società Asental, di proprietà di Zdeněk Bakala. Già in corso negoziati con potenziali investitori. Secondo il governatore della Moravia Slesia, Miroslav Novák, vi potrebbero trovare lavoro duemila persone.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(17 agosto) Vola M&A in Repubblica ceca. Si va verso un 2015 da record per le operazioni di Mergers and Acquisitions. Spesi in sette mesi più di 100 miliardi di corone (+40% rispetto allo scorso anno). A giocare un ruolo determinante è l’elevato dinamismo dell’economia nazionale.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(17 agosto) Praga città congressuale di primo piano. La conferma arriva dai dati relativi al 2014 diffusi da Icca (International Congress & Convention Association), che pubblica la classifica delle città del mondo dove si è svolto il maggior numero di congressi internazionali. La capitale ceca è al 10° posto assoluto, con 118 meeting. Al primo posto Parigi (214 congressi). Per quanto riguarda la classifica delle nazioni, la Repubblica ceca, con 146 appuntamenti, si colloca al 29° posto.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(21 agosto) Investimenti nella Sanità. Il consiglio dei ministri della Repubblica Ceca dà il via libera a un piano di spese da 10 miliardi di corone da realizzare sino al 2020. La cifra sarà destinata a sette ospedali universitari e altre strutture, nelle città di Praga, Brno, Olomouc, Plzeň e Hradec Králové, tutti gestiti direttamente dal ministero della Salute.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(24 agosto) Boom investimenti immobili commerciali. Nel primo semestre di quest’anno, in Repubblica Ceca è stata spesa la cifra complessiva di quasi 34 miliardi di corone, con un incremento di quasi l’85% rispetto stesso periodo del 2014.

La cifra più consistente è andata a locali destinati al commercio al dettaglio, secondo quanto emerge da uno studio della società di consulenza Professionals.

Le aziende ceche, grazie al miglioramento della situazione economica, sono più disposte a offrire benefit ai propri dipendenti. A pagare la tredicesima mensilità, sarà il 47% delle imprese, mentre cinque anni fa la quota non raggiungeva un terzo. E’ quanto emerge da sondaggio realizzato dalla Unione dell’Industria e dei Trasporti. I contributi per le polizze pensionistiche integrative li offre il 77% delle aziende, mentre cinque anni fa solo il 60%.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(27 agosto) Emesse obbligazioni con rendimento negativo. La Repubblica Ceca si concede in assoluto per la prima volta questo lusso. Il ministero delle Finanze riesce infatti a piazzare bond con scadenza nel marzo del 2018 e con un tasso di - 0,001%, per

3,75 miliardi di corone. La Repubblica Ceca è così uno dei primi paesi del mondo, insieme a Svizzera, Svezia e Danimarca, dove il governo può utilizzare lo strumento dei tassi negativi per finanziarsi. “Si tratta di una ulteriore conferma della percezione positiva che la Repubblica ceca suscita nei mercati finanziari” è il commento del ministro delle Finanze Andrej Babiš.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(7 settembre) Shopping cinese in Repubblica Ceca. A distinguersi per dinamismo è in primo luogo il gruppo Cefc che in pochi giorni compra nell’ordine due storici e prestigiosi immobili praghesi (Martinický palác a Hradčany e l’ex sede di Živnobanka su Na příkopě), una quota del 79,4% nel Pivovary Lobkowicz (quinto produttore ceco di birra), il 60% della società calcistica Slavia Praga. Cefc diventa inoltre partner strategico di Medea Group e aumenta dal 5% al 9,9% la quota nel J&T Finance Group (con l’intenzione entro breve di portarla al 30%).

-----------------------------------------------------------------(11 settembre) Unipetrol annuncia mega investimento. La compagnia petrolchimica ceca, del gruppo polacco Pkn Orlen, ha in programma di spendere 8,5 miliardi di corone per la costruzione di nuove unità di produzione di polietilene nel sito di Chempark Záluží, a Litvínov, nord Boemia. La realizzazione dell’impianto avverrà in collaborazione con l’italiana Technip, grazie a un contratto da 5,7 miliardi di corone.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(11 settembre) Rolls-Royce sbarca a Praga.

Annunciata l’apertura, nella primavera del prossimo anno, della sua prima rivendita autorizzata sulla Pařížská ulice (nella lobby dell’Hotel Intercontinental).

Quest’anno in Repubblica Ceca, sino a fine agosto, sono state vendute 12 Rolls-Royce, rispetto alle sei di tutto il 2014.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(18 settembre) Crescita depositi stoccaggio gas.

La Repubblica ceca vuole aumentare la capacità degli impianti sotterranei, in modo da coprire il 50% del fabbisogno annuale. Attualmente tali depositi coprono il 37% del fabbisogno annuale. Lo annuncia a Ostrava il ministro di Industria e Commercio Jan Mládek nel corso dell’International Energy Club.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(22 settembre) Piano di investimento di General Electric. Il colosso americano sarebbe orientato verso la Repubblica Ceca per la realizzazione di una fabbrica di motori turboelica per piccoli aerei, un impianto per il quale è in programma una spesa complessiva di 400 milioni di dollari, circa 10 miliardi di corone. Lo scrive la stampa ceca che riporta quanto appreso dalla divisione aeronautica del colosso americano, la GE Aviation di Cincinnati.

-----------------------------------------------------------------(23 settembre) Škoda coinvolta in caso VW. La casa automobilistica ceca ammette di aver in passato utilizzato i motori diesel EA189, al centro dello scandalo della Volkswagen, per le vetture Fabia, Octavia e Superb. Le auto dovranno essere richiamate per adeguamenti tecnici. La Škoda sottolinea però che tutti gli attuali modelli in vendita in Europa sono dotati di motori rispettosi dei limiti di emissioni Euro 6.

The autumn sky is getting darker. What has happened to the country reborn in 1989 thanks to the victory of human rights? Where did Václav Havel’s slogan of “Truth and love always triumph against lies and hatred”, end up? The sidelong glance of a Czech history buff leads to hasty verdicts. It would appear in fact that a traditionally antihegemonic world, a tone on which the Bohemian cultural life has proven itself on countless occasions (from the youthful love of Bohumil Hrabal for

to foreigners, just as the present is not as bleak as the proclamations of politicians suggest.

Let’s go back twenty years, for a roundtrip between the Balkans and Prague.

The first test of empathy came to the post-communist Czech Republic at the

Germania (che da sola ospitò 400mila bosniaci tra 1992 e 1996), ma diverse centinaia di rifugiati giunsero in Boe‑ mia, grazie anche a legami storici tra i due paesi (Praga come meta culturale per il mondo socialista) e una lingua più comprensibile per gli slavi del sud.

In uno degli ultimi convogli umanitari a lasciare la Sarajevo assediata, con la madre e la sorella maggiore, viag‑ giava Ena: aveva sette anni. Il padre era dovuto rimanere indietro, non era consentito agli uomini di lasciare la città. Il convoglio le portò in Croazia, un aereo per Praga, un nuovo autobus per Doksy, 70km a nord della capitale, nel campo profughi di Poslův Mlýn. Un campeggio abitato da bambini e dal‑ le loro madri, donne di città, istruite, “europee”. Tuttavia il trattamento che le autorità riservarono loro è descritto da Ena senza mezzi termini: “ci tratta‑ vano come animali”. L’amarezza resta, nella trentenne di oggi. “In capanne di legno, condividevamo una stanza con un’altra famiglia. I bagni erano in beginning of the 90s, with the wave of refugees fleeing the Yugoslav war. Most of the asylum seekers went to Austria and Germany (which alone was home to 400,000 Bosnians between 1992 and 1996), but several hundred refugees arrived in Bohemia, thanks to historical ties between the two countries (Prague as a cultural destination for the Socialist world) and a language more understandable to the Southern Slavs. In one of the last convoys to leave besieged Sarajevo, Ena travelled, with her mother and older sister, aged seven. The father had to stay behind, men were not allowed to leave the city. The convoy brought them to Croatia, before a plane took them to Prague, a new bus for Doksy, 70km north of the capital, to the refugee camp of Poslův Mlyn. A camp inhabited by children and their mothers, city women, educated, “European”. However, the treatment that the authorities reserved them is described by Ena bluntly: “they treated us like animals”. The bitterness remains, in the thirty-year-old today.

Fuori dal campo, la gente al paese, i compagni di scuola, gli insegnanti, li trattarono come amici, “si comportavano sem‑

plicemente bene”. Ma dentro le condi‑ zioni erano talmente insostenibili da portare sua madre ad una decisione folle: tornare a Sarajevo ancora in guerra, due anni dopo, con entrambe le figlie. Oggi Ena è di nuovo a Praga, è una musicista (suona ed insegna pianoforte), e alla domanda sulle po‑ litiche odierne sui migranti ci risponde di trovarle molto simili al 1992; “Ab‑ biamo sempre pensato ci trattassero così perché anche loro erano poveri a quei tempi. Ora penso che potrebbero semplicemente essere sempre così, e basta”. Rifugiati arrivarono da tutte le

“In wooden huts, we shared a room with another family. The bathrooms were shared, we were not allowed to use the kitchen. I remember a camp guard shouting at my mother who had taken a spoon, a day when I was sick. We were not allowed to go to school, they kept us in quarantine for who knows which disease. Only in February 1993 they gave permission to those who spoke a little Czech, including me and my sister. And anyway”, she smiles proudly, “at the end of the year got all A’s on our report card”.

Outside the camp, people in the village, classmates, teachers, treated them as friends, “they behaved just fine”. But in-

side the conditions were so unbearable it led her mother into a foolish decision, to return to Sarajevo while still at war, two years later, with both daughters.

Ena is now back in Prague, where she is a musician (she plays and teaches the piano), and regarding the questions about today’s policies on migrants she replies that she finds them very similar to 1992. “We always thought treated us this way, because they too were poor in those days. Now I think it it might always be this way, and that’s it”. Refugees arrived from all parts during the Yugoslav conflict, in groups or isolated, even from Serbia further away from the front,

parti in conflitto jugoslavo, a gruppi o isolati, anche dalla Serbia più lontana dal fronte, dove le famiglie temevano l’arruolamento forzato dei giovani.

Alcuni ripartirono nel ‘96, molti ri‑ masero perché non c’era più un posto dove tornare. Il tratto comune dei racconti è nel giudizio sereno verso le popolazioni locali, durissimo contro le autorità.

Da quei tempi la gestione dei confini è molto cambiata – in primo luogo con l’ingresso nella UE. Dal 2004, la Repubblica Ceca ha adottato politiche più ferree; in quell’anno i richiedenti asilo passarono da 11.400 a 5.400. Il numero è stato sotto le mille unità per anni, nonostante il continuo afflusso di fuggitivi in Europa; nel 2014 ci sono state 1145 richieste d’asilo (nulla rispetto alle 202.645 in Germania).

Da dieci anni, il numero maggiore di richieste è arrivato sempre da cittadi‑ ni ucraini; l’anno passato le domande dalla Siria sono state in tutto un centi‑ naio. Since that time, the management of borders has changed, firstly with the entry into the EU. For ten years, the largest number of requests came increasingly from Ukrainian citizens, and last year the total requests from Syria were about a hundred. Yet the feeling that is growing is one of hostility towards those coming from the Middle East, and hypochondriacal fear of an inva-

è fortemente ostile verso chi viene dal Medio Oriente, ed un’ipocondriaca paura di un’invasione: mix tra stere‑ otipi anti-islam e populismo nazio‑ nalista che non aveva mai preso piede con tale forza. Colpevole è la politica, sia per la diffusione dello “hate spe‑ ech”, il discorso d’odio che trova una sua precisa collocazione nel diritto internazionale, sia per l’assenza quasi totale in Parlamento di voci in difesa di migranti – dato sconcertante per il Paese, visto che tra 1948 e 1989 hanno trovato rifugio all’estero più di 420 mila cecoslovacchi (in media 10

mila all’anno!). Non può non destare stupore come il Presidente Zeman, in barba alle critiche ONU, abbia annun‑ ciato la sua partecipazione il prossimo 17 novembre – festa nazionale in me‑ moria dell’89 – ad una manifestazio‑ ne dichiaratamente “anti-islam”.

Una politica ostile che trova alle‑ ati: ultimo esempio, ad inizio no‑ vembre, il proclama congiunto dei ministri dell’interno di Repubblica Ceca e Slovacchia, Milan Chova‑ nec e Robert Kaliňák i quali hanno annunciato che i due paesi non accetteranno nessun rifugiato in

quota UE sino al prossimo anno.

Time-out. Abbiamo detto che il pas‑ sato non è stato sempre positivo, come il presente non è del tutto ne‑ gativo. Timbriamo dunque il biglietto e torniamo nei Balcani. A pochi metri dal confine croato, in territorio serbo, dalla scorsa estate diverse centina‑ ia di migranti (soprattutto siriani), cercano una via che li porti a nord, verso l’Europa settentrionale. Siamo nel campo di Berkasovo, vicino alla cittadina di Šid. Ad aiutarli, dal fornire coperte e tè caldo al difendere i loro diritti, tanti volontari da mezza Euro‑

sion consisting of a mix of anti-Islamic stereotypes and nationalist populism that had never had caught on with such force. Culprit is politics, both due to the diffusion of “hate speech”, the discourse of hate which finds its true place in international law, and the nearly total absence of voices in Parliament defending migrants, a disconcerting figure for the country, given that between 1948 and 1989 more than 420,000 Czechs (average 10,000 per year!) have found refuge abroad.

A fact that cannot fail to arouse as-

tonishment is how President Zeman, in spite of the UN criticism, announced his participation on November the 17th - a national holiday, in memory of 1989, in an overtly "anti-Islam" event.

A hostile policy which has found its allies: the most recent example dating back to early November with the joint proclamation of the interior ministers of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Milan Chovanec and Robert Kaliňák who announced that the two countries will not accept any refugees in EU quotas until next year.

Time-out. We said that the past was not always positive, as the present is not entirely negative. We therefore validate our ticket and go back in the Balkans. A few meters from the Croatian border, in Serbian territory, since last summer, several hundred migrants (especially Syrians), looked for a way taking them north, to Northern Europe. We are in the field of Berkasovo, near the town of Šid. Helping them, by providing blankets and hot tea to defend their rights, were many volunteers from all over Europe, and an unexpected surprise.

Non è certo semplice: un recente sondaggio ha rivelato che più di due terzi del paese si dice ormai impaurito dall’arrivo dei profughi, mentre l’80% teme l’espansione dell’Islam nei pro‑ pri confini. Confini che tornano, ina‑ spettatamente, sotto i riflettori.

Here, in the middle of the former Yugoslavia, away from the megaphones of hate campaigns, we find that the largest group of foreign volunteers is actually the Bohemian one, a "team" of more than one hundred people, coordinated by the NGO Člověk v tísni. It is from this dichotomy between political direction of the state, and empathy of its inhabitants, that the Czech people question themselves. Many volunteers are also active at home, in an attempt to block the growing xenophobia. One such example, is the Česko vítá uprchlíky (Bohemia welcomes refugees) campaign, active through Facebook and awareness events on the territory. Will this counterpart from civil society stop the illiberal wave that stirs the country? It is certainly not simple: a recent survey revealed that more than two thirds of the country now claim to be frightened by the arrival of refugees, while 80% fear the expansion of Islam within its borders. Borders that return, unexpectedly, to the spotlight.

la Gross-Berlin, la Grande Berlino. Un “quartiere” che seppure piccolo, esiste ancora oggi.

Cechi “tedeschizzati” insomma, man‑ tenendo per lungo tempo, almeno sino agli anni ‘60 di questo secolo, con estrema determinazione, la pro‑ pria lingua e le proprie abitudini. Una enclave, Rixdorf, il “boemische Vier‑ tel”, dove ancora oggi la birra ha un sapore un po’ diverso e dove Jan Hus e Comenio sono nomi che esigono un estremo rispetto.

L’abbiamo trovata facilmente, questa “colonia ceca” dentro la metropoli te‑ desca. Ironia del destino di un paese che ha sempre rosicchiato i confini dei propri vicini.

Allora, andiamo sul campo. Adden‑ trandoci proprio al confine fra la vec‑ chia Berlino Ovest e l’area un tempo definita “comunista”, si arriva al quar‑ tiere di Neukölln.

Prima considerata come zona disagiata, priva di grandi risorse economiche ma allo stesso tempo caratteristica nella sua unicità, Neukölln mantiene un’at‑ trattiva particolare. Tanto che il regista Detlev Buck ha deciso di ambientarci il of Rixdorf, in what is now Gross-Berlin, Greater Berlin. A “neighbourhood” that, although rather small, still exists today.

“Germanized” Czechs, in fact, with great determination, were able to maintain their own language and tradition for a long time, at least until the 1960s. Rixdorf, an enclave, the “boemische Viertel”, where even today beer has a slightly different taste and where the names Jan Hus and Comenius call for profound respect.

We found this “Czech colony” quite easily in the German metropolis. The irony of fate of a country that has always nibbled away at its neighbours borders.

So, let’s visit the place. Entering the border between the old West Berlin and the area that used to be called the “communist” area, you reach the district of Neukölln.

Come altre zone, anche Neukölln ha diverse anime: quella turca, forse oggi preva‑ lente nei suoi “doner kebab” e nei suoi caffè, quella proletaria testimoniata da diverse lapidi che ancora inneg‑ giano agli “spartachisti”, quella degli studenti di provenienza cosmopolita, che scelgono il quartiere per i suoi affitti ancora relativamente bassi,

quella della atmosfera dei tempi della guerra fredda… E infine quella ceca, che cerchiamo noi.

Inattesa, imprevista, impensabile, di‑ screta, ecco la Berlino di Rixdorf. Tal‑ mente discreta che potreste passarci accanto senza accorgervene. Ci sono però alcuni segnali inequivocabili, per occhi più attenti. Lasciandoci alle spalle la Karl Marx Strasse e fatte po‑ che centinaia di metri, ci si inoltra in stradine di case basse a un solo piano, dal tetto spiovente e tutte circondate da un giardino. Muta anche l’aspetto delle indicazioni stradali e delle vie, le strade sono di acciottolato, cambia gradualmente l’atmosfera, che non è

by without noticing it. However, there are a number of unmistakable hints for those who are more attentive. Leaving the Karl Marx Strasse behind us, just a few hundred meters further on, you meet narrow streets with low one-floor houses, that have sloping roofs and all of them surrounded by a garden. Even the directional signs and road signs are different and the streets are made with cobblestone, while the atmosphere changes gradually, not only from an architectural point of view, but also aesthetically. Considered in the past an impoverished area, without economic resources, but at the same time particular for its uniqueness, Neukölln has maintained a certain attractiveness. So much so that the film director Detlev Buck decided to shoot “Knallhart”, a film that depicts the troubled relationship between a German family and the new Asian immigrants.

Suddenly, almost without realizing it, we end up in a small village that might be easily found in Vysočina or Šumava. German soil permeated with Czech temperament. Tentiamo di entrare nel piccolo mu‑ seo, ma un signore, dai tratti burberi, ci dice non vi sia “niente di interessan‑ te da vedere”... facendo intendere che non siamo graditi.

the name of Bethlehemskirche, a handicraft workshop displays the work of a blacksmith, a repository of tools and a cemetery with typical Czech inscriptions.

Once you get over a certain amount of salutary distrust and the furtive glances from the windows, you soon realize that you have reached the centre of Rixdorf. A small museum – that may be accessed through a green gate and which is surrounded by a garden – tells the history of the old Moravian

community. It was actually Frederick the Great who gave Rixdorf some sort of official status, by elevating it to a village, or more precisely to a borough.

But who were they and how many were the Bohemians refugees that, almost four centuries ago, chose the Prussian capital to begin a new life? “For the most part, they were craftsmen, but there were also miners – explains Saabine, who lives there, but who is also of German origin. – Many of them have kept their surnames and, until a

Va bene, siamo autorizzati a un giro panoramico tra ferri per cavalli e mantici accesi. La testimonianza “classica” e ufficiale è però la birreria con terrazza. Elegante, frequentatissima, deve risalire proba‑ bilmente agli anni Trenta o Quaranta del secolo scorso, e presenta nel suo menu anche piatti di ispirazione bo‑ ema. Non è una “Kneipe” berlinese, potrebbe forse essere una vinárna ag‑ giornata... un occhio al menu: è vero, lo stinco si mangia anche qui, ma i canederli, oppure le carpe marinate denotano altre origini. Dalle dimen‑ sioni e dal tipo di architettura, doveva essere un’altra fattoria trasformata in ristorante. Si alternano muri bianchi di cemento ai mattoni rossi che in questa capitale sono ancora frequen‑ ti. Arriva una ragazza in bicicletta. È una studentessa: “Sì, i cechi ci sono, sono arrivati anche dei giornalisti per intervistarli, ma non tutti gradiscono few decades ago, even their language.

We try to enter the small museum, but we are greeted by a rather unfriendly character, “there is nothing interesting to see...”, he says, making it quite clear that we are not welcome.

There is still the old blacksmith shop left for us to see. And here, the traditional craftsman still beats his iron on the anvil, and there are bilingual inscriptions which testify to a community that is still active. It is all right: we are allowed to visit the place among horse shoes and operating bellows.

However, the “classic” and official testimony is represented by the brewery with a terrace. Elegant and very popular, it almost certainly dates back to the Thirties or Forties of the last cen-

di essere in una metropoli di quattro milioni di abitanti. Qui c’è solo un piccolo villaggio, dove tutti sanno tutto di tutti. Puoi parlare in tedesco, ceco, italiano, turco persino. L’impor‑ tante è non fare chiasso, rompere quest’atmosfera che ha mantenuto il villaggio intatto nei secoli”.

But the Evangelical Church, that stands between a Sardinian restaurant and a small hotel dedicated to “Kafka”, is very active and has social centres and a kindergarten. “It’s not only a question of the so-called “Bohemian minority” – father Jorg explains. – Rixdorf has many souls and we try to keep them together, to avoid tensions and provide social services”. There is also

a library that lends books, religious texts, manuals on mechanics and an “help centre”, including an undefined recovery centre.

A cafè with the sweet name “Zuckerbaby”, reveals, perhaps, part of the truth: “Rixdorf has always been a border area, since when the city was divided – the owner explains. – It is a microcosm, frozen in time and you must forget that you are in a city of four million inhabitants. There is just a small village here, where everybody knows everything about each other.

You may speak German, Czech, Italian or even Turkish. The fundamental thing is not to make a stir and break the special atmosphere that the village has maintained intact for centuries”.

Tradition, atmosphere created by lights, sounds and smells, the aChristmas markets in Old Town Square in Prague are among the most popular in Europe.

Each day the red-roofed stalls place decorations, handicrafts and food products on offer. If the smallest children are waiting impatiently for the arrival of Santa Claus, the most anticipated event by locals and tourists is the lighting of the imposing fir, on November the 28th. The markets add magic to the Czech festivities, and not only in Prague. In Brno it is celebrated also in cellars, Olomouc offers various types of punch and mulled wine, while the attractions of Český Krumlov include a live nativity scene, the Christmas Eve banquet offered to castle bears and decorations made with candles, nuts and straw to recreate the fairytale spirit of the past. www.trhypraha.cz

In the magical Christmas atmosphere, Andrea Bocelli returns to fill the O2 Arena in his fourth concert in Prague, part of a tour in Europe and the USA that will continue until June. He will be accompanied by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, conducted

With 80 million albums sold, the tenor has received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Billboard Latin Music Awards. A Slavkov, località della Moravia del sud meglio nota come Austerlitz, si svolge ogni anno la principale rievocazione in Europa centrale dell’omonima bat‑ taglia in cui Napoleone sconfisse austriaci e russi. A 210 anni da quel 1805, l’interesse dei club storici è così alto che ci saranno duemila figuranti da dieci Paesi, 900 soldati con le uniformi dei tre eserciti e 120 cavalli a riproporre lo scontro davanti agli occhi di 25mila spettatori. Sotto i colpi di venti cannoni l’attore americano Mark Schneider attraverserà il campo di battaglia nei panni di Napoleone. La battaglia dei tre imperatori si combatterà sabato 5 dicembre sotto il colle Santon, nel vicino comune di Tvarožná, mentre domenica è prevista la comme‑ morazione al Monumento della Pace Mohyla míru. www.austerlitz.org

Il Royal Russian Ballet si esibisce per la prima vol‑ ta in Repubblica Ceca nel balletto per eccellenza, il Lago dei cigni di Čajkovskij. Per lo spettacolo che andrà in scena il pomeriggio del 12 dicembre al Centro congressi di Praga si è optato per l’epilogo positivo mentre resta segreta la scelta per quello serale. In Slavkov, a town in southern Moravia better known as Austerlitz, the main commemoration event in Central Europe takes place annually, of the battle in which Napoleon defeated the Austrians and Russians. 210 years on from 1805, the interest of the history clubs is so high that there will be two thousand participants from ten countries, 900 soldiers in the uniforms of the three armies, and 120 horses in order to revive the battle in front of 25,000 spectators.

Between the twenty cannon shots, American actor Mark Schneider will enter the battlefield in the role of Napoleon. The Battle of the Three Emperors will be fought on Saturday, December 5 under Santon hill, in the neighboring village of Tvarožná, while on Sunday the commemoration of the Peace Monument of Mohyla míru is scheduled. www.austerlitz.org

The architect Jan Blažej Santini Aichel, inventor of Gothic-Baroque style, will be commemorated in Prague by a plaque. Commissioned by the Putování za Santinim association, which promotes the figure of the ingenious creator of Italian origin, will be unveiled on December the 7th. It was installed at number 2 on Šporková street, in Malá Strana, in the place where once the graveyard where Santini rested stood. At the opening ceremony, a memorial Mass for the artist, will follow. By 2023, three hundred years after the death of Santini, the association will aim to get the entire complex of about eighty works, recognized as UNESCO heritage, including churches, monasteries and architectural details that characterize cities and castles, bearing his signature and scattered all throughout the Czech Republic. www.santini.cz

The Russian Royal Ballet will perform for the first time in the Czech Republic with ballet par excellence, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. The group, which has carried the reputation of Russian ballet school in the world, has studied the steps with the teacher Mikhail Bezzubikov, an Honored Artist of Russia. The finale of the story of Princess Odette and Odile her double, which inspired the Hollywood film Black Swan with the Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman, will vary in its stage preparation. For the show that will be staged on the afternoon of December the 12th at the Prague Congress Centre they have opted for a positive epilogue, while the choice for the evening performance remains a secret. Un colore rosato dalle tonalità più scure e più chiare, un sottile strato di grasso sotto la pelle dorata e l’inten‑ so aroma affumicato. Il prosciutto di Praga, in ceco Pražská šunka, è uno dei prodotti gastronomici simbolo della città d’oro. Presente nei menù di tutto il mondo, fino a pochi anni fa era quasi introvabile nella metropoli boema, che solo ultimamente ne ri‑ scopre il valore.

L’arte di salare la carne di maiale e conservarla fu introdotta già nell’an‑ tichità dai celti e ripresa dai romani. Il primo prosciutto di Praga risale inve‑ ce al 1857. Allora il salumiere praghe‑ se František Zvěřina provò a lasciare Rosy-coloured, with darker and lighter shades, a thin layer of fat under its golden skin and an intense smoky aroma. Prague ham, which is called Pražská šunka in Czech, is one of the prestigious food products of the golden city. Although it is listed in several menus around the world, until just a few years ago it was almost impossible to find in the Bohemian metropolis and it is only quite recently that its great value has been rediscovered.

The craft of salting and preserving pork was already used by the Celts during ancient times and was then adopted by the Romans. However, the first Prague ham dates back to 1857.

At the time, the delicatessen seller of Prague, František Zvěřina, tried to pickle and then smoke an entire pork leg, including the bone, whereas previously it used to be divided into three

parts. The innovation was greatly appreciated and this type of ham, passing from Karlovy Vary and Dresden, then spread to other big cities of the then Austro-Hungarian Empire, such as Vienna, Budapest and became known as “Prague Ham”, simply be-

cause it had been produced for the first time in the capital. But nobody bothered to protect its name or recipe, therefore, its distribution became increasingly widespread, because many were those who copied it, both domestic and foreign competitors.

Una delle ca‑ ratteristiche che rendono particolare il prosciutto è il cosiddetto “taglio di Praga”, quella forma arrotondata che, tramandata di generazione in generazione, mantiene l’aspetto ori‑ ginale della coscia di maiale. Chmel usava prosciutti magri con un peso non superiore a 5 kg. Ispirandosi alla produzione della birra, considerava fondamentale la regolazione del‑ la temperatura degli spazi in cui la carne veniva deposta per la salatura e l’essicazione. La fase finale di affu‑ micatura con legno di faggio doveva essere lenta, circa 8-12 ore e il fumo doveva solo profumare la carne, sen‑ za coprirne l’aroma.

Grazie all’ottima qualità la fabbrica prosperò presto e Chmel, fornitore di corte dei sovrani austriaci, esportò i suoi salumi addirittura in America. Un altro suo merito fu l’idea di usare per il confezionamento scatole di latta, per allungarne il periodo di conservazio‑ ne e spedirli oltreoceano.

Se fra le due guerre era uno dei pro‑ dotti di punta dell’industria agroali‑

mentare della Cecoslovacchia unita, al termine della seconda la sua ricet‑ ta fu quasi dimenticata. Apparvero delle varianti all’originale, prima le conserve e semiconserve e sul finire degli anni ‘70 la versione senza osso.

Il Praga fu gradualmente sostituito dal prosciutto stufato, coperto da una superficie di aspic e confezionato nei classici involucri a forma ovale che si trovano in tutti i supermercati cechi.

Uno dei produttori è la società Masna Studená, parte della holding Agrofert di Andrej Babiš.

La rinascita riguarda l’ultimo decen‑ nio. Oltre ad aver suscitato l’ammi‑ razione dei visitatori della Casa Ceca agli ultimi giochi olimpici invernali di Torino, oggi lo si trova di nuovo nei menù di varie birrerie o nei festival di tutta la Repubblica Ceca, servito caldo o freddo in grosse fette accompagna‑ te dal pane.

Eppure è quantomeno curioso che non si riescano a reperire dei dati precisi sul consumo del prosciutto di Praga. Si può solo tentare di trac‑ ciare un’analisi del consumo totale della carne. Dai dati disponibili nel 2011 in Repubblica Ceca, la media di

Being inspired by the production of beer, he strongly believed that the fundamental aspect of it all was the right temperature of the room in which the meat was stored for the salting and drying operations. The final smoking phase, using beechwood had to be done slowly up to 8-12 hours and the main purpose of the smoke was simply to add a certain fragrance to the meat, without affecting its aroma.

Thanks to the high quality achieved, the factory quickly prospered and Chmel, who became the official sup-

plier to the court of the Austrian Rulers, was also able to export his sausages to America. Another of his merits was his idea of using packaging to prolong the storage life of the product, in order to send it overseas.

If during the inter-war period it had been one of the leading food products of the industrial agribusiness of a united Czechoslovakia, at the end of the second war, his recipe was almost forgotten. Variants of the original product could be found on the market, but mainly preserves and semipreserves and then at the end of the 1970s the boneless version. Prague ham was gradually replaced by stewed ham, covered by a layer of aspic and packed in classic oval shaped pouches, that may be found in every Czech supermarket. Nel 2009 sono arrivate dalla Germania circa 124 tonnellate di prosciutti e spalla di maiale e dalla Slovacchia circa 121, salite a 177 l’anno succes‑ sivo. Nel 2010 sono inoltre state im‑ portate 314 tonnellate di preparati e conserve di suino dalla Francia e 467 dalla Germania.

Its revival belongs to the last decade. After evoking the admiration of visitors to the Czech House at the last Winter Olympics in Turin, it is now listed in the menus of many pubs and festivals throughout the Czech Republic, served hot or cold in thick slices, accompanied by bread.

However, it is rather curious that there is little precise data available on the consumption of Prague ham. We can only make a rough analysis and estimate the total consumption of meat. From the available in 2011 data, in the Czech Republic, the average consumption of meat per person in a year was 78.6 kg, almost twice that of Europe, which was 42 kg; pork amounted to 42.1 kg with

many products being imported from abroad. In 2009, around 124 tons of ham and pork shoulder came from Germany and 121 from Slovakia, that rose to 177 the following year. In 2010, also 314 tonnes of prepared and preserved pork were imported from France and 467 from Germany.

Perhaps this lack of data is due to the fact that there is still no protection for

più tardi. L’Unione Ceca delle Indu‑ strie di Lavorazione della Carne si era opposta. La locuzione “prosciutto di Praga” non può riferirsi all’esclusiva attività di un solo ristoratore poiché nell’immaginario collettivo richiama un prodotto generico.

La stessa associazione, in collabora‑ zione con il Ministero dell’Agricoltu‑ ra, chiese piuttosto all’UE il ricono‑ scimento di “specialità tradizionale garantita” (STG). Da un lato lo scopo era rinnovare una tradizione nata nell’Ottocento, dall’altro stabilire una ricetta unica e chiare regole di pro‑ duzione. Regole che chiunque deve

seguire per poter usare la denomina‑ zione Prosciutto di Praga. Obiezioni si sono levate da Italia, Germania, Austria e Slovacchia, poiché i loro sa‑ lumieri chiamano con questo termi‑ ne insaccati preparati seguendo una ricetta diversa e non utilizzano il “ta‑ glio di Praga” che lo rende tipico. La decisione continua a slittare proprio perché non si trova un compromesso con gli slovacchi,che per settant’anni hanno condiviso con i cechi la mede‑ sima tradizione.

Per ora chi non conosce il sapore del vero prosciutto di Praga può assag‑ giarlo a Trieste, Berlino, in America

o Australia. I salumieri triestini sono fieri di essere fra i pochi a produrre il cotto di Praga secondo l’autentica ricetta del 1857. Trieste ha ereditato, soprattutto in ambito gastronomico, molte usanze assimilate in secoli di appartenenza all’impero austroungarico. Sebbene oggi la sua pro‑ duzione s’identifichi nella Venezia Giulia, arrivò prima a Milano dove già nel 1883 il boemo Francesco Peck, che si presentava come “salu‑ miere di Praga”, aprì una bottega di carni affumicate alla maniera tede‑ sca, salsicce e prosciutti alla brace.

the product. In 2004, Tomáš Karpíšek, the Czech restaurateur and owner of the “Ambiente” restaurant group, verified that there was no registered trademark for Prague ham. With the help of a former employee of Chmel, he revisited the old recipe. “I do not intend to harm other people’s business, but simply wish to produce ham according to the original tradition”, he

reassured his competitors. “My main goal is to encourage the best chefs to include it in their menus, as they do with Parma ham”. He was granted a trademark by the patent office in 2007, but it was withdrawn three years later. The Czech Meat Processors’ Association had opposed it. Thus, the term “Prague ham” cannot be the sole exclusivity of a restaurateur, because

it is considered collectively as a generic product.

The same association, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, asked the EU to recognize it as a “Traditional Speciality Guaranteed” (TSG). On the one hand, to renew a tradition that was born in the nineteenth century, on the other to establish a unique recipe and clear rules of production. Rules

Objections were raised by Italy, Germany, Austria and Slovakia, because their delicatessen sellers use this term when they refer to sacked food, prepared according to a different recipe and because they do not utilize the “Prague cut”, which is specific. But a final decision has not been reached yet, because there is still

disagreement with the Slovaks, who for seventy years have shared the same tradition with the Czechs.

For now, those who don’t know the real taste of Prague ham may do so in Trieste, Berlin, America or in Australia. The Trieste delicatessen sellers are proud of being among the few who produce Prague ham according to the authentic 1857 recipe.

Trieste has inherited, especially at a gastronomic level, many traditions that were assimilated over the centuries while they belonged to the Austro-Hungarian empire. Although its production today is identifiable with Venezia Giulia, it first made its appearance in Milan, where in 1883,

the Bohemian Francesco Peck, who introduced himself as a “Prague delicatessen seller”, had opened a shop of cured meat, done according to German tradition: char-grilled sausages and ham. He soon became the official supplier to the Royal Household and gained many prestigious customers around the country. For his food merits, in 1910, he was nominated Knight of the Crown of Italy.

In Trieste they had already been writing about Prague ham in cookbooks and travel guides since the beginning of the century. It is believed that the Bohemian maids may have brought this typical central European dish into the homes where they worked and

Anzi, “si me‑ riterebbe ormai l’appellativo di cotto di Trieste, vista la tradizione secolare che lo lega al territorio giuliano” dice Vladimir Dukcevich, amministratore delegato del gruppo Principe, primo produttore del Prosciutto di San Da‑ niele. L’unico gruppo italiano che ha lanciato gli affettati in nuove confe‑ zioni ovali, quell’innovazione scono‑ sciuta nel Belpaese e già ideata da Chmel quasi 150 anni fa. that it eventually became part of the Trieste Easter lunch, together with Pinza cake. The Buffet da Pepi is a historical place in Trieste, that is often full of tourists and local people, where ham is sliced with a knife according to customers’ requests and served hot, accompanied by black bread, mustard and grated radish.

You may find it next to other specialties, such as porcine or Trieste ham, wrapped in bread crust.

Prague ham is recognized as a Traditional Food and Agriculture Product of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Indeed, “it deserves the title of “cotto di Trieste” in view of the centuries-old tradition that binds it to the Venezia Giulia territory”, says Vladimir Dukcevich, CEO of the Principe Group, the producer of Prosciutto di San Daniele. The only Italian group to have launched sliced ham wrapped in new oval packages – the innovation that was unknown in Italy and that was developed by Chmel almost 150 years ago.

Una storia straordinaria, simile a quel‑ la di Giorgio Perlasca, Oskar Schindler o Nicholas Winton, e come la loro rimasta quasi sconosciuta per più di mezzo secolo. Parliamo di Karel Wei‑ rich, un “giornalista resistente” che, grazie al suo ruolo di vaticanista per l’agenzia di stampa ceca ČTK e ai suoi

contatti all’interno della Santa Sede, riuscì durante la seconda guerra mon‑ diale ad aiutare e salvare tantissimi cittadini ebrei cecoslovacchi internati in Italia.

“Un giusto ritrovato”, come lo descri‑ ve lo storico Alberto Tronchin nel suo libro che ne ripercorre la vita intensa,

movimentata, divisa tra la macchina da scrivere e l’impegno civile. È stato proprio Tronchin, con la sua ricerca, a evitare che la figura di Weirich cadesse nell’oblio. “Fondamentale – racconta – è stato l’aver conosciuto la nipote, la signora Helena Weiri‑ chová. Appena cominciò a mostrar‑

An extraordinary story, similar to that of Giorgio Perlasca, Oskar Schindler and Nicholas Winton, and which, like their story, remained almost unknown for more than half a century. We are talking about Karel Weirich, a “partisan journalist”, who thanks to his role as Vatican correspondent for the Czech News Agency ČTK, and his contacts within the Holy See, was able, during

the Second World War, to help and save many Jewish Czech citizens that had been interned in Italy.

“A rediscovered righteous”, as historian Alberto Tronchin points out in his book, who traces his intense and busy life, divided between his typewriter and his civic commitment. It was Tronchin, in fact, through his research work to prevent the figure of Weirich from fall-

ing into oblivion. “Fundamental – he recounts – was the fact that I knew his niece, Mrs. Helena Weirichová. As soon as she started showing me the documents that her uncle had preserved, I almost turned pale. I realized immediately that it was an important story that had to be told”.

Released in Italy in 2007, the volume has now just been presented in Prague,

Ma torniamo alla storia di Karel Wei‑ rich. Italo-ceco a tutti gli effetti, nasce a Roma il 2 luglio 1906, figlio di un artista cecoslovacco, Ignaz, arrivato nella capitale italiana grazie a una borsa di studio. A diciannove anni Ka‑ rel – dopo avere ottenuto un diploma di computisteria e stenografia – vie‑ ne assunto come segretario presso la Direzione nazionale della Pontificia Opera di San Paolo Apostolo.

Collaboratore del Messaggero, è tra‑ sferito qualche anno più tardi alla Direzione nazionale delle Pontificie Opere Missionarie e inizia a scrivere articoli sulla Cecoslovacchia per L’Os‑ servatore Romano. Furono proprio questa attività nelle opere missiona‑ rie cattoliche, e il suo far parte della redazione del giornale della Santa Sede che gli permisero di avvicinarsi a diversi personaggi importanti all’in‑ terno del Vaticano, in particolare con la Segreteria di Stato e l’allora sostitu‑ to monsignor Giovanni Battista Mon‑ tini – il futuro Papa Paolo VI.

in Czech, (Spravedlivý riskuje, Edizioni Carmelitane), thanks to the initiative of the Gariwo (Gardens of the Righteous Worldwide). Led in Prague by the Italian journalist Andreas Pieralli, Gariwo aims – as was the case in other cities around the world – to establish in the Czech capital a “Garden of the Righteous”, i.e. a place dedicated to those heroes, who on their own initiative,

opposed all crimes against humanity and all forms of totalitarianism.

But let’s take a step back to the story of Karel Weirich. A true Italian-Czech citizen, born in Rome on July 2, 1906 and the son of a Czechoslovak artist, Ignaz, arrived in the Italian capital thanks to a scholarship. At the age of nineteen, after being awarded a diploma in bookkeeping and shorthand, Karel is offered

a job as secretary at the National Directorate of the Pontifical Society of St. Paul the Apostle.

As collaborator of the Messaggero newspaper, a few years later he is transferred to the National Directorate of the Pontifical Mission Societies, where he starts posting articles on Czechoslovakia for the Osservatore Romano. It was, in fact, this Catholic

È del 1935 l’inizio della sua collabo‑ razione con la Čtk, l’agenzia stampa nazionale cecoslovacca, che gli pro‑ pose un posto di collaboratore fisso presso la Santa Sede. Weirich accetta senza smettere di lavorare al giorna‑ le vaticano: un modo di continuare a coltivare i suoi contatti nelle sue “due Patrie”.

Dopo l’uscita del libro che ripercorre la sua storia è lo stesso Osservatore Romano, il suo vecchio giornale, ad averlo ricordato così: “cercò di aiutar‑ li inviando denaro, abiti, medicine e persino documenti falsi. Ma non tutti, purtroppo, riuscirono a salvarsi.

Tuttavia per un buon numero di loro l’essersi imbattuti in quel connaziona‑ le generoso e coraggioso significò la vita”. Sulla sua lista compaiono i nomi di migliaia di ebrei cecoslovacchi che Weirich si impegnò ad aiutare duran‑ te il conflitto, pagando personalmen‑ te questo impegno con l’arresto e la deportazione in Germania.

La “Lista di Weirich” – come l’ha chia‑ mata qualcuno parafrasando la Schin‑ dler’s List – è oggi un documento stori‑ co preziosissimo per ricostruirne l’intera missionary activity – and his being part of the editorial staff of the newspaper of the Holy See – that allowed him to become acquainted with several prominent figures in the Vatican, in particular the Secretariat of State and the then deputy Monsignor Giovanni Battista Montini – the future Pope Paul VI. His collaboration with the ČTK, the Czechoslovak national news agencies, dates back to 1935, when he was offered a job as a full time collaborator to the Holy See. Weirich accepted, while continuing to work for the Vatican newspaper: a way to continue refining his contacts in the “two homelands”.

Following the release of the book, that traces his history, it is actually the Osservatore Romano, his old newspaper, that remembers him with these words: “he tried to help by sending them money, clothes, medicines and even forged

vicenda. A metterla in salvo fu lui stesso, nascondendola all’interno dei gradini della scala di casa prima del suo arresto da parte della Gestapo nel 1944.

Ma riavvolgiamo un attimo il nastro. È il 1941 e la Cecoslovacchia era invasa documents. But, unfortunately, not all of them were able to save themselves.

However, for a good number of them, their encounter with this generous and courageous compatriot, led to their safety”. His list contains the names of thousands of Czechoslovak Jews, that Weirich undertook to help during the conflict and for which he paid the consequences by being arrested and deported to Germany.

The “Weirich list” – as someone has called it, by paraphrasing Schindler’s List – is now a valuable historical document for reconstructing the whole story. It was he, in fact, who saved this document by hiding it inside the staircase of his house, before being arrested by the Gestapo in 1944.

But let’s take a step back in history. It was 1941, and Czechoslovakia had been invaded by the Nazis and “transformed” into the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Weirich, who worked in Rome for the national news agency of Czechoslovakia, refused to swear allegiance to the German Führer – and was thus dismissed.

Tuttavia, come spiega Alberto Tronchin, pare che “la Santa Sede fosse sicuramente a conoscenza dell’attività di Weirich, come è dimostrato dalla corrispon‑ denza con membri influenti del Vati‑ cano (Montini, in primis).

anti-Nazi circles and obtain despatches to be sent directly to Pope Pius XII. However, the position of the latter during the Second World War is still rather ambiguous, and particularly regrettable is the lack of a clear cut position against Nazism and the persecution of the Jews.

However, as Alberto Tronchin explains, it seems that “the Holy See was surely aware of Weirich’s activity, as may be

deduced from the correspondence he had with influential members of the Vatican (Montini, in primis).

The impression is that they actually knew in great detail what Weirich was doing”. What is really certain is that locally the interreligious assistance between the Christians and Jews did actually took place, Tronchin goes on to explain: “In several texts they even talk

Il lavoro nascosto di Weirich si concentrò in particolare sul campo di internamento di FerramontiTarsia in provincia di Cosenza. Questa prolungata attività clandestina, così come il suo ruolo di riferimento per la resistenza cecoslovacca, scesa in cam‑ po dopo l’8 settembre al fianco dei partigiani, gli costò nel 1944 l’arresto e la condanna a morte di un tribunale militare nazista.

Fu solo l’intervento della Santa Sede ad evitare l’esecuzione: la condanna fu commutata in un periodo di detenzio‑

ne presso la prigione Sadelheim di Mo‑ naco e diciotto mesi di lavori forzati da scontare nel campo di concertamento di Kolbermoor. Nel campo rimase fino al maggio 1945 quando venne libera‑ to dalle truppe americane. Passata la guerra Weirich poté allora ritrovare il proprio posto di corrispondente della ČTK a Roma, almeno fino alla presa di potere dei comunisti in Cecoslovacchia quando fu di nuovo licenziato con l’ac‑ cusa di essere una spia. Trovò rifugio allora, ancora, nella sua Roma, dove visse fino 1981, mantenendo un atteg‑ giamento sempre di grande modestia per l’impresa che aveva compiuto.

about widespread help from ecclesiastical bodies or, sometimes even from religious individuals, involved in helping people of Jewish religion. Many Jews were given refuge and hidden in convents and monasteries in and around Rome”. It was with these institutions that Weirich maintained an extensive network of contacts, often making sure that the Jewish Czechoslovaks living in

Italy would find refuge. In 1940, after the order of arrest of all the Jews by fascist Italy, the Italian-Czech journalist founded, together with a few compatriots, the St. Wenceslas Mission, which was named after the Czech king and patron saint. It was also through this association that he was able to assist many of those who had already been interned in camps. The underground

work of Weirich focused particularly on the internment camp of FerramontiTarsia in the province of Cosenza. This prolonged underground activity, as well as his role as reference for the Czechoslovak resistance – which became effective alongside the partisans after September 8 – led to his arrest in 1944 and the death sentence by a Nazi military court.

Quando era ancora in vita e qualcuno pensò di conferirgli una decorazione per l’im‑ presa compiuta, replicò umilmente con queste parole: “allora bisognereb‑ be dare una medaglia non solo a me, ma anche a tutti quei frati e a tutte quelle monache che hanno nascosto le persone, salvando loro la vita”.

It was only thanks to the intervention of the Holy See that he avoided being executed: the sentence was commuted into a period of detention in the prison of Sadelheim in Munich and to eighteen months of hard labour, to be served at the Kolbermoor concentration camp. He remained there until May 1945, when he was freed by US troops. After the war, Weirich was able to take up his post as ČTK correspondent in Rome, at least until the communists took power in Czechoslovakia, when he was once more dismissed on charges of being a spy. He then found refuge again in Rome, where he lived until 1981, always maintaining a humble profile, despite his outstanding accomplishments.

On October 28, on the National Day of the Czech Republic, Weirich was awarded a Medal of Merit, in memory of his deeds. When he was still alive, and a request was been made for him to be decorated for his accomplishments, he replied with these simple words: “we should therefore give a medal not only to me, but also to all the monks and nuns that gave refuge and hid those people, thus saving their lives”.

Un attento lettore dell’attualità ceca sa che si è molto scritto, ultimamen‑ te, dei rapporti fra Praga e Berlino.

Secondo diverse fonti, questi si sono deteriorati a causa della politica eu‑ ropea di “quote” di accoglienza dei profughi. Si è anche discusso di una presunta chiamata dal Premier Bo‑ huslav Sobotka respinta dalla Cancel‑ liera Angela Merkel, anche se le fonti ceche hanno subito negato e sostenu‑ to che i due leader non sono riusciti a trovare un orario conveniente per parlare, sottolineando al contrario che le relazioni fra i due paesi con‑ finanti non sono mai state migliori.

Storicamente, il rapporto fra i due vicini è stato piuttosto contrastante.

Dal medioevo la Boemia è stata abi‑ tata da popolazioni di origine slava e germanica, convivenza che in alcune occasioni è sfociata in tensioni, attriti.

Allo stesso tempo, molti storici hanno voluto evidenziare i benefici di questa vicinanza; tra questi, il leggendario František Palacký, il quale vide il con‑ tatto fra i due popoli come essenziale per la formazione dell’identità nazio‑ nale ceca.

Nell’epoca moderna il legame con‑ tinua ad essere contraddittorio; fra The attentive reader of Czech news will know that much has been written lately, on the relations between Prague and Berlin. According to several sources, they have deteriorated recently, because of the European policy of “quotas” on the reception of refugees. There was also discussion of an alleged phone call from Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, which was rejected by Chancellor Angela Merkel, although Czech sources have been denied it, arguing that the two leaders were just unable to find a convenient time to talk, and instead emphasized that the relationship between the two neighbouring countries has never been better. Historically, the relationship between the two neighbours has been rather unstable and contradictory. From the Middle Ages, Bohemia was inhabited by people of

Eppure, la Repubblica Ceca dipende fortemente della Germania da un punto di vista economico, ed il gover‑ no di Praga si è molto impegnato nel mantenere un ottimo rapporto con quello di Berlino.

Naturalmente, la rappresentazione del popolo germanico nella cultura ceca rispecchia la complessa storia, con i tedeschi tipicamente dipinti come una minaccia, o invasori o ag‑ gressori, particolarmente dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Gli episodi che ebbero luogo nei Sudeti restano una ferita aperta per entrambe le parti. Con l’annessione del Sudeten‑ land da parte della Germania nel 1938 (regione di 3,63 milioni di persone, di cui 2,9 milioni di tedeschi e 700.000 cechi), la minoranza ceca fu costretta a trasferirsi nel territorio propriamen‑ te cecoslovacco, che pure fu invaso pochi mesi dopo. Lì, dove negli anni successivi la popolazione ebraica, sto‑ rica componente boema, fu costretta a subire le efferatezze commesse dai Slavic and Germanic origin, a coexistence which on some occasions led to tension and friction. At the same time, many historians have highlighted the benefits of this proximity, among them, the legendary František Palacký, who saw the contact between the two peoples as essential for the formation of Czech national identity.

The relationship continues to be contradictory in the modern era. Among Central European politicians it is not unusual to use anti-German rhetoric to attract nationalist voters (Jarosław Kaczyński of the Law and Justice party in Poland being a recent example). Yet, the Czech Republic is heavily dependent on Germany from an economic point of view, and the Prague government has been very active in trying to maintain a good relationship with Berlin.

Naturally, the representation of German people in Czech culture reflects the complex history, with the Germans typically portrayed as a threat, as invaders or aggressors, particularly after the Second World War. The incidents that took place in the Sudetenland remain an open wound for both sides.

With the annexation of the Sudetenland by Germany in 1938 (a region of 3.63 million people, including 2.9 million Germans and 700,000 Czechs), the Czech minority was forced to move to the Czechoslovak territory, which was also invaded a few months later. It was there, where in the following years the Jewish population, a historical component of Bohemia, was forced to suffer the atrocities committed by the Nazis.

The Germans, likewise, remember the Beneš Decrees, which after the war

ended ratified the expropriation of their assets, and their expulsion from the Sudetenland and Czechoslovakia.

The art of film, with its rhetoric power, has not remained silent on the matter.

One of the first films to speak explicitly of the expulsion of the Germans was Adelheid (1970) by director František Vláčil, the legendary auteur behind Marketa Lazarová. The Silesian filmmaker’s work, adapted from the novel

by Vladimír Körner, sheds light on the impossibility of peace in the territory, describing the fate of a Czechoslovak soldier, Viktor Chotovický (played by Petr Čepek). Having returned from the Western Front, he arrives in the city of Vroutek, in the Sudetenland, where he is employed as a guardian of an old dwelling (Zámek Lužec) previously occupied by the family of a Nazi

Despite the attraction, Viktor is torn between feelings of desire and national identity, while Adelheid struggles to believe in the authenticity of his love, and the lack of hope leads both characters to a miserable end. A remarkable film, also boosted

by Zdeněk Liška’s soundtrack which adapts existing pieces of music by Bach and Strauss, on the tragedy of personal relationships in the whirlwind of historical events which provided a backdrop.

During communism, the Germans were typically portrayed as undesired and dishonest, ready to stab the Czechs in the back at the earliest opportunity.

from the German Democratic Republic as “good Germans”, and distinguish them from the “bad” ones of the west.

Kočár do Vídně (Coach to Vienna, 1966) from the maestro Karel Kachyňa, is a preciously rare example of a film made in this period, which belies the stereotype, and blurs the typical national attributes of both countries. A simple story with a humanist message that tells of a Czech widow (Iva Janžurová) who vows to avenge the murder of her

Forced to lead a carriage with two enemy soldiers to freedom, one of whom is seriously injured, she enters into a hedge labyrinth, where she waits for the right moment to strike. The plan is complicated when the young Austrian soldier Hans (Jaromír Hanzlík) ultimately proves to be friendly: he just wants to go home in peace. Eventually, a group of Czech partisans find the heroine and Hans asleep together. As-

suming they are lovers, the film ends in tragedy, with the partisans raping the girl and shooting Hans dead.

A powerful and poetic film rejecting the propagandist simplifications on Czech-German relations. For the first time, not all Germans were bad, and not all partisans were heroic. Despite the fame it enjoys today, the film, at the time was accused of revisionism and anti-nationalism. In short the Czechoslovakia of that time, was not

ready for the work of the anti-conformist Kachyňa.

For the first Czech film that openly discusses the brutality inflicted on the Sudeten German population and their expulsion, one must refer to the recent past. It took one of the most praised film-makers of the Nová Vlna, Juraj Herz, in 2010, with Habermannův mlýn (simply Habermann under the international title) to bring it to the screen. Herz reverses the stereotypes

producing a feature film with good Germans and bad Czechs. It is based on the true story of Hubert Habermann (named August in the film), a wealthy industrialist who owned a major mill in the village of Bludov, in the district of Šumperk, where he was probably beaten to death by Czechs a few days after the liberation of the village.

If the movie deserves respect for having the courage to finally address what was once a taboo subject in its country, it loses some credibility for the way it classifies all the characters as good or bad. The protagonist, played by German actor Mark Waschke, not only is presented as a beautiful, intelligent and a perfect husband, but also completely apolitical and idealistic. Moreover, he and his fellow German wife

Se il film merita rispetto per il co‑ raggio di aver finalmente affrontato un tema tabù nella sua patria, perde un po’ di credibilità per il modo in cui classifica tutti i personaggi come buoni o cattivi. Il protagonista, in‑ terpretato dall’attore tedesco Mark Waschke, non solo viene presentato come bello, intelligente e un marito perfetto, ma anche completamente apolitico e idealistico; inoltre, sia lui che la moglie connazionale (Hannah Herzsprung) sono doppiati in un ceco perfetto. Questa scelta penalizza l’opera creando un ritratto poco re‑

alistico del Sudetenland dell’epoca, dominato dalla lingua ceca, senza mostrare le difficoltà nella comunica‑ zione fra i due gruppi etnici.

Habermann ha avuto un certo succes‑ so al botteghino in patria, ma non è riuscito a stimolare più discussioni sul soggetto e neanche una forte reazione emotiva dagli spettatori, visto che si è trattato solo di un rovescio degli ste‑ reotipi, quasi un rimedio per le tante pellicole in bianco e nero che in epoca comunista presentavano i tedeschi come malfattori o traditori. Dai se‑ gnali però, sembra che raccontare gli

eventi nei Sudeti dopo la guerra non sia più un tabù in Repubblica Ceca, visto che dopo Habermann anche al‑ tri lavori hanno fatto riferimento agli episodi in questione – ad esempio Alois Nebel, film d’animazione del 2011 diretto da Tomáš Luňák. Ci si aspetta solo un film imparziale che parli della vita quotidiana nel Sude‑ tenland prima che arrivasse l’ideolo‑ gia nazista a rovinare legami e scambi culturali fra le due comunità. Habermann had a certain degree of success at the box office in its homeland, but it failed to stimulate further discussion on the subject or even

a strong emotional reaction from viewers, since it was just a reverse of stereotypes, almost a remedy for many black and white films produced in the communist era portraying the Germans as criminals or traitors. The signs, however, seem to indicate that describing the events in the Sudetenland after the war is no longer a taboo in the Czech Republic, since after Habermann also other works have

referred to the episodes in question, such as Alois Nebel, an animated film from 2011 directed by Tomáš Luňák.

We only await an unbiased movie showing everyday life in the Sudetenland before Nazi ideology arrived and ruined cultural ties and exchanges between the two communities. Particularly in the present moment, when the refugee crisis seems to divide the two nations once again.

A Praga ci sono più di 80 cimiteri, com‑ prendendo in questa cifra tutti i luoghi deputati alla sepoltura, ma i principali presenti in città sono 29, tutti ammini‑ strati dalla Správa pražských hřbitovů, l’Amministrazione dei cimiteri di Pra‑ ga. Suddivisi per cinque circoscrizioni (Ďáblice, Olšany, Vinohrady, Malva‑ zinky e Bubeneč), si distinguono poi in quattro categorie a seconda dei servizi offerti e della loro importanza storica e artistica. Alla prima categoria appar‑ tengono, ad esempio, quelli tutelati dall’Unesco o che propongono servizi

In Prague there are more than 80 cemeteries, and in this figure all burial places are included, but there are 29 main ones in the city, all managed by Správa pražských hřbitovů, the Administration of cemeteries in Prague.

Divided into five districts (Ďáblice, Olšany, Vinohrady, Malvazinky and Bubeneč), they are then separated into four categories according to the services offered and their historical and artistic importance. The first category, for example, consists of those protected

It must be said that, among the 29, there is one, the Malostranský hřbitov on Plzeňská street, Prague 5, which does not fit into any of the four abovementioned categories. No funerals have been held there since the late nineteenth century, and it appears to be in a state of neglect and decay – a somewhat paradoxical condition, since

it is a monumental cemetery in the truest sense of the term, an open-air museum of nineteenth century sculptures of huge artistic and historical value. It suffices to say that here lie people such as architects Kryštof and Kilián Ignác Diezenhofer. While normally inaccessible to the public, guided tours take place infrequently, organized by an association that aims to protect it and take care of its restoration.

sull’omonima collina lungo il fiume, accanto alla Basilica dei Santi Pietro e Paolo. Questo luogo di riposo eterno fu creato nel 1869, ma si erge su una necro‑ poli precedente del XIII secolo. Oltre a quella ebraica, del quale parleremo più avan‑ ti, esiste una sezione per la sepoltura dei cristiani ortodossi e un’altra per i musulmani. Vi si trova anche il cimite‑ ro dei soldati dell’Armata Rossa caduti durante la guerra in Cecoslovacchia.

Numerosi e di grande pregio le tombe monumentali che si trovano al suo interno, fra cui spiccano quelli in stile art nouveau. Olšany possiede anche due grandi strutture per la celebrazio‑ ne dei riti funebri.

Tra i cimiteri più recenti va segnalato poi il Vinohradský hřbitov, cimitero di Vinohrady, a Praga 10 nel quale, in una tomba di famiglia, riposano anche i resti del presidente Václav Havel.

tive place. It is located on the hill along the river, next to the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. This resting place was created in 1869, but was erected upon a former thirteenth century necropolis.

The cemetery is famous for holding the tombs of personalities of the past and recent history of the country. The composers Bedřich Smetana and Antonín Dvořák lie here, as do painters such as Alfons Mucha, writers such as Karel Čapek and Jan Neruda. The most famous of the monumental tombs Vyšehrad is definitely the Slavín tomb, an architectural complex designed by Antonín Wiehl, within which there are 55 graves of famous people.

The largest cemetery area of Prague however, in the western part of the city, with its 50 hectares and two million people buried, is Olšany’s. Its origins

In Vinohradský hřbitov the largest crematorium in Europe operates, the Strašnice Crematorium. We emphasize that in the Czech Republic 80% of funerals conclude with the cremation of the deceased, a European high and a percentage which ranks among the highest in the world. Prague is characterized by the spread, with rates in recent years which are now nearly 50%, of the “funeral without ceremony” (pohřeby bez obřadu), an expression which in the eyes of many western foreigners appears to be a contradiction in terms. Among funerary office workers even the slang expression, “bezofka” (bez oficia) was born.

Olšany is divided into 12 cemeteries, differentiated also by religion. In addition to the Jewish one, which we will discuss later on, there is a section for the burial of the Orthodox Christians, and another for Muslims. There is also the cemetery of the Red Army soldiers who died during the war in Czechoslovakia.

There are numerous monumental tombs to be found inside it, all of great value, among which those in art nouveau style stand out in particular.

Olšany also owns two large facilities for the celebration of the funeral rites.

An additional fact also stands out: about 20% of the urns are not taken in delivery by the family. In these case, after several months of waiting, should no relatives present themselves, the public body in charge will deposit them in common burial sites.

The Jewish Cemeteries A genuine national monument, the daily destination of thousands of tourists, is the Old Jewish Cemetery, in the city centre. A place, which possesses historical and artistic characteristics which make it of world importance, is currently one of the most significant burial sites of the Jews in the world.

It was built in the first half of the fifteenth century to replace an even older one that stood near the street Spálená from 1270. This incredible,

Another important cemetery of the Jewish community in Prague is located in the heart of the Žižkov district. It is the old Jewish cemetery in Olšany,

Un altro importante cimitero della comunità ebraica di Praga si trova nel cuore del quartiere di Žižkov. Si tratta del vecchio cimitero ebraico di Olšany creato anch’esso durante l’epidemia di peste del 1680. Pure nel suo caso fu decisivo l’editto alla fine del ‘700 di Giuseppe II, che proibì di utilizzare il Vecchio cimitero ebraico del Ghetto.

Fu così che quello di Olšany divenne il luogo di sepoltura principale della comunità ebraica, utilizzato fino al 1890. In questo luogo sono sepolti cir‑ ca 37 mila defunti. It has the distinction of reserving a specific area for urns, despite the Jewish tradition not allowing cremation. Numerous illustrious people lie in tombs in this place too, including Franz Kafka.

Per la comunità ebraica funziona oggi, dalla fine dell’800, il Nový židovský hřbitov, sempre nell’area cimiteriale di Olšany, che ospita circa 100 mila sepolture. Ha la particolarità di acco‑ gliere una specifica area per le urne cinerarie, e questo nonostante la tra‑ dizione ebraica non consente la cre‑ mazione. Numerose anche in questo luogo le tombe di grandi personaggi, fra cui Franz Kafka.

Verso il futuro Un recente progetto della Municipali‑ tà praghese vorrebbe che questi luo‑ ghi non fossero destinati solo ai morti, ma li immagina come futuri luoghi di incontro per la comunità. non manca di suscitare perplessità e persino polemiche – avranno anche la possibilità di “sfrattare” le salme che vi riposano. È sufficiente che si paghino i servizi di esumazione e traslazione.

Sempre in questa ottica – ma forse indicativo di maggiore sensibilità – si segnala un altro recente progetto, vale a dire la possibilità per privati cittadi‑ ni, così come per enti e associazioni, di “adottare” le tombe di personaggi illu‑ stri e salvarle da un destino che sarebbe altrimenti di incuria e abbandono.

L’idea è stata poi adottata dalla Správa pražských hřbitovů. In pratica si tratta di un’area verde dove la sepoltura delle ceneri funerarie avviene diretta‑ mente nel terreno, in prossimità degli alberi. “Con meno marmi e solennità, ma con più natura, più tranquillità e in totale armonia con l’ambiente, con urne biodegradabili o in legno” come spiegato dalle ideatrici del progetto.

La vivacità di proposte anche innova‑ tive sull’argomento è testimonianza del modo come la cultura ceca – sep‑ pur non particolarmente legata alla religione (almeno da quello che le statistiche affermano sull’argomento) – attribuisce valore al culto dei morti e ai riti funebri anche quando, come spesso accade in questo Paese, sono di tipo prettamente laico. one also called an “eco-cemetery”. Molte delle meraviglie architettoniche del barocco praghese, e non solo, portano la firma di illustri ar‑ tisti italiani. Uno di questi è certamente lo stucca‑ tore e architetto di origini lombarde Carlo Lurago che fu attivo in Boemia dal 1637 fino alla sua mor‑ te avvenuta nel 1684. A Praga, Lurago portò a ter‑ mine molti lavori per la Compagnia di Gesù. Come opera prima, per i Gesuiti, eseguì gli stucchi della chiesa gotica di San Salvatore e, in seguito, costruì e modificò altre chiese come quelle di Sant’Eligio e di Santa Maria sotto la catena, e realizzò molti lavori all’interno del Klementinum, tra cui alcuni chiostri. Tra le altre sue opere ricordiamo anche il Municipio barocco della cittadina di Náchod, la chiesa gesuita dell’Assunzione di Hradec Králové, quella di Sant’Ignazio a Klatovy e quella praghese di Sant’Ignazio su Karlovo náměstí, le modifiche apportate al palazzo Lobkowicz di Praga.

Many of the architectural wonders of the Prague Baroque, and other styles, bear the signatures of famous Italian artists. One of these is certainly the plasterer and architect from Lombardy Carlo Lurago who was active in Bohemia from 1637 until his death in 1684. In Prague, Lurago he completed many works for the Society of Jesus. His debut work for the Jesuits, was the stucco decoration of the Gothic church of St. Saviour, and he subsequently built and modified other churches such as Saint Eligius and St. Mary-under-the-Chain, and performed a lot of work inside the Clementinum, including some cloisters. Among his other works are also the baroque town hall of the town of Náchod, the Jesuit Church of the Assumption of Hradec Králové, that of St. Ignatius in Klatovy and the Prague St. Ignatius on Karlovo náměstí, as well as the modifications on the Lobkowicz Palace in Prague.

Il Janáčkovo divadlo è il più moderno tra i tre edifici facenti parte del Teatro Nazionale della città morava di Brno. Fu costruito tra il 1960 e il 1965 e inaugurato nell’ottobre del ‘65 con l’opera La piccola volpe astuta di Leoš Janáček. Al fine di decidere il progetto, tra il 1910 e il 1957, furono banditi 7 diversi concorsi. Alle competizioni par‑ teciparono 150 tra i migliori architetti e artisti cechi tra cui vanno menzionati: Bohuslav Fuchs, Josef Gočár, Vlastislav Hofman, Josef Chochol, Pavel Janák e Jan Kotěra. All’epoca della sua apertura, il teatro era il più grande e moderno di tutta la Cecoslovacchia. The Janáčkovo divadlo is the most modern of the three buildings which make up the National Theatre of the Moravian city of Brno. It was built between 1960 and 1965, and opened in October ‘65 with the opera The Cunning Little Vixen by Leoš Janáček.

In order to decide on the design, between 1910 and 1957, seven different competitions were announced. The competitions involved the participation of 150 of the best Czech architects and artists including Bohuslav Fuchs, Josef Gočár, Vlastislav Hofman, Josef Chochol, Pavel Janak and Jan Kotěra.

At the time of its opening, the theatre was the largest and most modern in the Czechoslovakia. The style in which the building was built would summarize the most important moments in the history of Czech architecture in the first half of the twentieth century, including features of Art Nouveau, cubism, modernism, functionalism and socialist realism.

Over its period of activity, the theatre has hosted over 20 opera and ballet premieres.

Pubblicata a Praga, Revolver Revue è la nota ri‑ vista ceca trimestrale di cultura che fu voce im‑ portante del movimento “underground” e che uscì dalla clandestinità solo in seguito alla Rivoluzione di Velluto. La rivista venne fondata nel 1985 con il titolo di “Jednou nohou” e assunse il nome attuale a partire dal 1986. Il primo numero fu stampa‑ to in sole 50 copie. Intorno al 1989 le copie au‑ mentarono a 500 e attualmente viene stampata in circa mille esemplari. Fondatori del periodico furono Ivan Lamper, Jáchym Topol e Viktor Karlík, e ad esso contribuirono nomi come Václav Havel, Zbyněk Hejda, Vít Kremlička, Alexandr Vondra, e altri. A partire dal 1988, come Edizioni Revolver Revue, vennero stampati anche libri. La pubbli‑ cazione, nel 1990, divenne a tutti gli effetti una rivista letteraria. Oggi l’archivio completo delle edizioni è conservato presso la biblioteca praghe‑ se “Libri Prohibiti”.

Published in Prague, Revolver Revue is a quarterly magazine of Czech culture which was an important voice of the “underground” movement, which came out of its secrecy only after the Velvet Revolution. The magazine was founded in 1985 under the title of “Jednou nohou” and has assumed its present name since 1986. The first issue was printed in just 50 copies. Around 1989, the number of copies increased to 500, and currently approximately a thousand copies are printed. The founders of the magazine were Ivan Lamper, Jáchym Topol and Viktor Karlík, while names like Václav Havel, Zbyněk Hejda, Vít Kremlička, Alexandr Vondra, and others, were among the contributors.

From 1988, books were also printed as Edice Revolver Revue. The publication, in 1990, effectively became a literary magazine. Today the complete archive of the issues is kept at the Prague Library “Libri Prohibiti”.

I primi di agosto del 1990, a meno di un anno dalla Rivoluzione di Velluto, Mick Jagger, storico fron‑ tman degli “Stones”, in ceco e sulle frequenze della TV nazionale cecoslovacca, fece un annuncio senza precedenti: “Kameny se valí do Prahy!” (Gli Stones arrivano a Praga!). La portata dell’evento è ben espressa dall’altra parte dello slogan, “The tanks are rolling out” (I carri armati se ne vanno), impresso sulle locandine affisse per la città, che annunciava‑ no l’imminente concerto della band simbolo della libertà e dello stile di vita occidentali. Solo pochi mesi prima tutto ciò sarebbe stato semplicemente impensabile. Praga si preparava ad accogliere una tappa dell’Urban Jungle Tour della mitica band bri‑ tannica. Il 18 agosto del 1990, giorno del concerto, allo stadio di Strahov oltre 100.000 spettatori assi‑ stettero allo show musicale più atteso di quell’anno, segno importante del cambiamento storico che il paese stava vivendo in quei giorni.

On the first days of August 1990, less than a year after the Velvet Revolution, Mick Jagger, the historic frontman of the “Stones”, on Czechoslovak national TV frequencies, made an unprecedented announcement in Czech. “Kameny se valí do Prahy!” (The Stones arrive in Prague!). The scope of the event was well expressed on the other part of the slogan, “The tanks are rolling out,” stamped on posters posted up around the city, announcing the upcoming concert of the band as a symbol of freedom and the Western lifestyle. Only a few months earlier, this would have been simply unthinkable. Prague was preparing to host a stage of the Urban Jungle Tour of the legendary British band. On August 18, 1990, the day of the concert, at the Strahov stadium over 100,000 spectators attended the most anticipated musical show of that year, an important sign of historical change that the country was experiencing in those days.

Recentemente pubblicato in lingua ceca, dalla casa editri‑ ce “Argo”, l’ultimo romanzo di Umberto Eco, “Nulté číslo” (Numero Zero), che racconta le vicende di una redazione improvvisata di giornalisti intenta a preparare un quoti‑ diano destinato, più che all’informazione, al ricatto, alla macchina del fango e a bassi servizi per il suo editore.

Protagonista del racconto è un giornalista fallito che, quasi cinquantenne, nella Milano del 1992, riceve la proposta da un noto e discusso imprenditore locale di fare il capore‑ dattore di un nuovo giornale, il “Domani”. Scopo del quoti‑ diano è ipotizzare, suggerire, alludere a fatti che non sono ancora successi ma che potrebbero accadere e coinvolgere personaggi illustri. Uno strumento, quindi, in grado di condizionare e indirizzare il comportamento di molte per‑ sone. Un giornale destinato però a non uscire mai, sem‑ pre in preparazione del “Numero Zero”, prova generale di quello che potrebbe diventare: uno strumento di ricatto infallibile e ben affilato.

The publishing house “Argo” has recently published the latest novel by Umberto Eco, “Nulté číslo” (Zero Issue), in Czech. It tells the story of an improvised editorial staff busy in preparing a newspaper, with the purpose – rather than being a means of information – to blackmail, denigrate and afford a poor service to the publisher. The protagonist of the story is a failed journalist, who at the age of around fifty – in the town of Milan in the year 1992 – receives the proposal from a well-known and controversial local entrepreneur, to become the editor in chief of a new newspaper called “Domani”. The main purpose of the daily newspaper is to hypothesize, suggest and allude to facts that have not yet taken place, but which are quite likely to happen, involving famous people. Thus, a potential instrument that is able to influence and affect the life and conduct of many people. A newspaper that is destined never to be published and that is always in preparation for its “Zero Issue”, a sort of rehearsal for what might turn out to be: a sharp and infallible instrument of blackmail.

Translated and published in Italian by “Atmosphere Libri”, is the literary work of the Czech writer Michal Ajvaz, an exponent of the magical realism genre, “L’altra Praga”.

Inside an antiquarian bookshop, in a snow laden Prague, a young man comes across a strange book with a purple cover, written in mysterious characters that do not seem to belong to any particular known language. Despite its odd aspect, the protagonist decides to buy it. A researcher informs him that the volume might put him in touch with other worlds, with parallel realities that are not perceivable in normal life. The protagonist is keen to disclose the mystery and begins to look for signs and clues that might lead him towards an adventurous and fascinating journey in a Prague that is parallel and complementary to the real one. The novel unfolds with thousands of situations, thus arousing the readers’ divers emotions and suggestions, taking him back to the atmosphere of Borges and Kafka, Kubin and Meyrink.

Così, un giorno d’estate, ecco bussare alla porta del suo studio Karel Heida, giovane ufficiale incaricato di fare luce sull’omicidio di una principessa russa. Callum MacDonald taught Modern History at the University of Warwick. His studies, that focused on the period of World War II, have led to a number of successful publications. In this book, “Operazione Anthropoid. L’attentato a Reinhard Heydrich, il boia di Praga”, MacDonald recounts a dark and fascinating page of World War II, delving into the story of the sadly notorious hierarch, head of the Nazi security services in Germany and architect of the “Final Solution” and ruthless governor of occupied Czechoslovakia, and seen by many as Hitler’s natural successor. In 1941, while the Third Reich was conquering Europe, the exiled Czech government set up Operation Anthropoid, in order to eliminate him. With the effort and tension of a real investigation, Callum MacDonald clarifies the antecedents, execution and consequences of the plan and demonstrating that the death of the “Prague Executioner” suited many, both inside and outside the Reich.

A talent among the best in the world, yet also one who has never managed to achieve his full potential because of a “glass” physique, which too often forced him to stay away from the playing fields. It has been a constant factor in his path as a professional, that has prevented him from making the definitive leap to the highest level and reach his full potential.

Tomáš Rosický was born on the banks of the Vltava River in Prague on October the 4th, 1980. He began to kick his first footballs at a very early age, on the advice of father Jiří, a former Sparta Prague player.

It was his father who brought little Tomáš to TJ Kompresory, the club now called Bohemians Praha.

At the age of eight he made it into the Sparta youth team. The above-average quality of small Tomáš was evident,

and he skipped the youth sector steps by eventually debutting in the first team shirt already at the age of 17. He slowly worked his way up the ranks to into the starting eleven, winning two championships in a row (1999 and 2000) and proving to be one of the most promising youngsters even at an international level. On February the 23rd, 2000, the first call from the national team arrived, with coach Jozef Chovanec who gave him his first cap in a friendly match in Dublin against Ireland. His name soon came under the radar of scouts from Europe's top clubs, who appreciated his technical and tactical qualities. Borussia Dortmund pursued him for a long time, before delivering the decisive blow on January the 9th, 2001. Having 41 appearances and 9 goals with Sparta behind him, Rosický moved to Germany for 14.5 million Euros.

I giornalisti tedeschi e i tifosi, veden‑ dolo così magrolino, presero subito a chiamarlo “Schnitzel”, vale a dire cotoletta, un nomignolo che sottin‑ tendeva l’invito a mangiare di più e a irrobustirsi.

Il campione ceco – che per la cronaca ha sempre detestato quel nomignolo – non delude comunque le aspetta‑ tive in terra teutonica, compiendo il definitivo salto di qualità. Con la ma‑ glia giallonera vince il terzo titolo del‑ la sua carriera, il sesto “Meisterschale” della storia del club, prima di vestire la maglia dei cannonieri dell’Arsenal.

The German journalists and fans, who saw him as being skinny, soon took to calling him “Schnitzel”, i.e. cutlet, a nickname that implied a suggestion for him to eat more and to bulk up.

The Czech champion, who for the record, had always hated the nickname, still did not fail to live up to expectations in the Teutonic land, where he finally reached his potential. With Die Schwarzgelben (The Black and Yellows), he won the third title of his career, the sixth "Meisterschale" of the

club's history, before wearing the colours of the Gunners- Arsenal.

The French coach Arsène Wenger, famous for his great nose for future talent, managed to seize him from the German club, and entrust him with a key role on his tactical chessboard.

It was in England where his definitive consecration arrived, with the first year ending with a total of 26 appearances, 3 goals and an industrial quantity of assists for his teammates. However, the following year, after a good start,

the long ordeal began. On February the 1st, he felt a crack in his left knee. A real blow to the heart for both his fans, who had to lose their most creative player at his peak in form, and for him, since he was forced to miss Euro 2008 with the national team. Rosický remained on the sidelines for 434 days, without playing a single minute in 2008-2009.

Rosický resta lontano dal terreno di gioco per 434 giorni, senza giocare neppure un minuto nella 2008-2009.

Il campionato seguente non comincia nel migliore dei modi: il 4 agosto, poco prima dell’inizio della Premier League, il giocatore ceco viene colpito da un problema muscolare, che lo tiene fuori fino a metà settembre. Da lì in poi col‑ leziona 33 presenze, realizzando 3 reti.

The physiotherapy lasted 160 days. In the next two years, he was struck by several muscle injuries, which forced him to miss 15 games before the umpteenth ordeal. At the end of last year he felt a crack in his left knee again, which forced Tomáš into a having more surgery. Currently, the Prague footballer is undergoing all the procedures of physio in order to return to the pitch as soon as possible. It will take some time before

Nei due anni successivi, viene colpito da diversi infortuni muscolari, che lo costringono a saltare circa 15 partite, prima dell’ennesimo inferno. Al ter‑ mine della scorsa annata il ginocchio sinistro salta nuovamente, costringen‑ do Tomáš a un nuovo intervento. Oggi il calciatore praghese sta effettuando tutte le procedure di riabilitazione per poter tornare in campo al più presto. Ci vorrà ancora del tempo, prima di poter tornare a sentire il profumo dell’erba dell’Emirates Stadium.

Così come Wenger, anche il tecnico della selezione ceca Pavel Vrba ha espresso in varie occa‑ sioni il suo grande apprezzamento per il suo fantasista. “Quando mi chiedo‑ no la formazione titolare, io rispondo sempre che l’unico sicuro di scendere il campo è Tomáš Rosický”. The extraordinary path of the Czech squad began on September 9, 2014, with the pleasant surprise of a home victory against the Netherlands. From then on, the formation of Vrba, managed to put together a series of three consecutive victories, includ-

ing two away wins against Turkey and Kazakhstan, before a disappointing draw with Latvia. On June 12, the first defeat arrived on the field of the surprise of the qualification – Iceland. It was the last misstep before qualifying, which was achieved due to the following victories. The Czech national team will therefore play again in a European Championship, after the last appearance in 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, where they admirably made it out of their group, before losing to the Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal side. Who knows if Rosický will be there to defend his country’s colours. Fans in particular, hope to recover this extraordinary player, who on the occasion of the match in Iceland, reached his 100th appearance in the shirt of the Lion badge. A 14 year journey, which started in Dublin back in 2001, and still is not finished thanks to the great spirit of sacrifice of Tomáš, who is ready to get up after every fall.
