A NOTE FROM PROJECT OH! Hello all of you April fools. We thought about playing a prank on you but laziness has overtaken our souls and we figured we would just throw some art your way instead.
We’d would also like to highlight a few things that we’ve included in this (Mini). And those highlights are as follows:
Aside from the promise of Spring and the early threats of Summer, this month also marks the beginning of our second quarter here at the Project Oh! Mission Control. Quarter sounds a little too business-y so let’s just call this Chapter II. The second chapter of our 2017 journey.
Hectic Films will be premiering their long-awaited feature length comedy film Border Brothers at the Fox Theater on April 20th. A lot of blood, sweat, and lost time went into that project, so we want to make sure we are there to support. And we would like to see more local filmmakers step up to the plate. Hence our newly initiated filmmaker workshops.
This next chapter means new projects. We weren’t able to get everything done during the first chapter, but we did accomplish a lot of what we were hoping to do. The team put together another awesome art show and a new magazine has been completed and is waiting in the print queue. We are also excited about the new film workshop we just added last month. So far, there are a lot of creative juices flowing and we are looking forward to seeing the films that come of it and we hope you are too. Chapter II will also come equipped with more web content and some special side projects that we have already teased here and there. And with that, I just want to take a moment to personally thank all of our collaborators for keeping things fun and interesting and donating their time and creative energy into our project ideas.
Thank you, collaborators. You are as awesome as rain over a dried up desert. :Moment Completed:
Border Brothers Movie Premiere
Art Imitates Art VI This is a cool show that our friends over at the Empty Space have been doing for the past few years, and it happens to be one of my personal favorites. The basic concept is: kids artists draw some pictures and adult artists create their own pieces based on those drawings. Check it out with the artists April 15th. Cover Art By Kevin Gardner Kevin was generous enough to let us use his painting for the April cover. This particular painting was created for The Get Down Art Show #4 and is available for purchase (contact Kevin for more information). He and Sam Moncada are featured in this (Mini) together because they are also the organizers of the #TGDAS brand of art shows (pages 4-5). So, read, enjoy, and do good things. Thank you, Humans. Over and out. — The Project Oh! Team
KEVIN GARDNER
kgtheoctopus
Kevin Gardner, also known as Kg The Octopus, is a self-taught mixed media artist whose work has been seen all over the world. He was also one of the first traditional artists featured in Project Oh! Magazine with the release of issue #2 back in 2014. His work helped set the tone for what was to come with Project Oh! and has been a huge contributor ever since. Kevin and his work can also be seen most months during First Friday right outside of the Syndicate Lounge on the corner of 19th and Eye St. and also as host/contributing artist of The Get Down Art Show. Favorite Artists? Salvador Dali, Basquiat, Frank Frazetta, Kit King, Alex Pardee, Madsteez, Lauren YS to name a few... Any advice or lessons you’ve learned? Draw/Sketch every day or at least every other day, don’t sell yourself short like I do and do whatever you want when it comes to your creativity. Don’t let people tell you to do YOUR art a certain way. Why do you think art is important? It gives people a voice without having to say anything. I think it’s great for children to learn about art too because it can open their mind to creativeness and so many other doors like it has for me. When I say art I don’t just mean painting and drawing. Like photography, music, dancing, theater, fashion, etc. Anything else you’d like people to know about you? I’m an octopus in human form...
SAMMY MONCADA
Samiam0324
Sammy is the co-founder of The Get Down Art Show and has created original, mind-bending pieces for all four shows thus far. If you like not sleeping, then you will love these fantastic creations. So, where exactly do these creatures come from? “I’m very influenced by the Old Masters, Such as Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Peter Paul Ruben mixed in with the 60’s and 70’s underground comic movement. Toss that in a blender with a bag of shrooms and lack of sleep you’ll end up with me. I just doodle straight onto the paper sometimes and It’s completely random. But most of the time my studies from my figure classes find there way into my work becoming twisted monsters.” If you’d like to see what else spawns from Sammy’s imagination, be sure to give him a follow.
