A NOTE FROM PROJECT OH! Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. There isn’t a whole lot new this month, but we do have a handful of things that we are working on. Here’s a little overview of what are actively working on. Art Show Our team has begun putting together the details for the next Get Down Art show which is currently scheduled for June 17th. Filmmaking Classes Our workshop is really taking form and it’s been a fun experience so far. As of this week, we start filming the first of several short films written by our students. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves and we are excited to see how the films turn out. We have already committed to offering the same 6 week workshop after we complete the filming for this one. We will be promoting that
soon and looking to get more people involved. Project Oh! Magazine We are making final adjustments to our latest completed release and then will be getting those sent out to our subscribers. We haven’t made any plans for an official release party, but we may do that later in the year. We are currently focused mainly on our SciFi/Fantasy issue to be released by the end of this quarter. We are in the design phase but are still open for taking more submissions. Our other open projects are listed below. That is it for now. You check our website for more information on events and additional web content that we are working on getting online. We hope to see you guys soon. — The Project Oh! Team
SCI-FI/FANTASY ISSUE
SURREAL/ABSTRACT
GRAFFITI/BODY ART
We are still taking submissions. Send us your photos, artwork, cosplays or short stories that fit around the theme of science fiction, fantasy, superheroes, comic book characters, etc.
For this issue we want to see some cool weird art. We are looking first for surreal artwork of any kind, and then anything else that might be a bit more abstract.
This already has a bit of content but we are looking for more “alternative canvas” type art (tattoos, bodypainting, graffiti) and some urban style street art.

ALEXANDRA ORTIZ
alex_onart
How would you describe your style? My work has been described as whimsical and surreal. My show Forbidden Forest (2012), was described as Dr.Seuss on acid. My other show Dreamscapes (2016) was a combination of dream sequences and colorful landscapes. In that show I used washes of acrylic to make a flowing almost translucent colors. Since then I’ve been painting my daily life as well as what I call “political cartoons.” I also paint and draw many selfportraits. I know every dimension of my face, yet every selfie comes out different. How long have you been making art? Professionally, I’ve been painting since around 2009. Besides that, I’ve been doing creative things my whole life. As a kid my parents would always get me arts and crafts, like crayons, sewing kits, coloring books, how to draw books, etc., for birthdays and holidays. I remember when I was learning to read Dr.Seuss books, there was always a blank page at the end of each book, which I always drew on. I took advantage of the art projects in elementary school. I drew a lot in school notebooks during classes in high school and college. Being an art major in college was the best because I had real art supplies and actual studio space to dedicate to the work, but I found out you can make art anywhere, out of anything. Tell us about your process? As far as the time I take to create new work, it is either spare time that I fill with art or dedicated art time. Sometimes it feels like I make art while I’m waiting for something. That is, if I have an extra half an hour before going somewhere, if work is a little slow, if I’m having coffee with a friend, I have time to do a sketch or paint a selfie. Other times I wake up from a dream and have to paint what I just saw. I also dedicate time at nights or
weekends to paint. Instead of going out on some Fridays I’ll stay in to paint. My process is to make as many pieces of art as possible. Around 2010 I thought if I could make 100 paintings then that would be enough. I exceeded that. Dreamscapes had 200+ new paintings, and I continue to make new ones. What are you currenty working on? Currently I’m working on a series of political cartoons that I call “The Upsidedown.” They feature clever things I think up that are wrong with the current white house administration. I would encourage everyone to make cartoons to criticize our president. I don’t know yet where I’ll show the finished series or when exactly it will be finished, but I do post them to Instagram. I showed a couple of the political cartoons at the Nasty Women Art Show which was at DeCoure bakeshop. How can people follow your work? Instagram is best @alex_onart. I also have a Facebook page “Alexandra Ortiz, Artist” that I occasionally update. I still show my art at First Friday in downtown Bakersfield. I show my artwork in group shows sometimes. My full artist vitae is listed on artbyalexortiz.webs.com.
