A NOTE FROM PROJECT OHI “This is Halloween. This is Halloween. Pumpkins scream in the dead of night!” Ya! Our favorite season is upon us. Queue the ghouls and goblins and everything else that goes “bump” in the night. October is finally here and that means it is time for one of the most inspiring and creative months of the year to unfold. As of today, we are making preparations for our next art show on Friday the 13th. We have a lot of ideas, and now it is just a matter of seeing what time and funds we have available to make it happen. But what we know for sure is that we will have 16 artists on display for this event. Hectic Films will be joining us with a screening of the fan film Camp Crystal Lake. We will also have copies of Issue #13 available for purchase, raffle giveaways and a costume contest! We also plan on releasing our next art subscription box this month with the theme of Halloween. Subscribed members can pick their boxes up early during First Friday and during The Get Down Art Show #6 on October 13th. And for those participating in Inktober, we suggest you also check out @drawlloween. It is just something fun that we found on the internet a couple of years ago and have worked into our routine for October. It is a good way to celebrate the season and create new art with a larger community. SIDE NOTE October 4th is Project Oh! Day. This will mark 4 years since we released issue #1 to the public at the Foundry during First Friday. We will be creating a special button to commemorate this milestone. The Project Oh! Team

PHIL GARCIA II

Phil is a frequent collaborator and the illustrator of the Creepshow styled cover for issue #5 back in 2014. “I’m a local artist who teaches middle school. My focus tends to be whatever I’m currently interested in. I enjoy drawing the most, but also paint and sculpt.” How would you describe your style? My style is inspired by current and past artists. I enjoy creating fun and inventive characters and creatures, but also working towards finding a unique voice in a visual world. How long have you been creating art? I’ve been creating images since I was a young child. I’ve been seriously trying to produce images of quality for the last decade. What got you started? I was a fan of comics. I still remember the first comic I ever bought, Avengers: Atlantis Attacks. It inspired me. I was in awe of the images and story it told. Is there anything you’d like to share about your process? My process depends on my purpose. If I want to create a painting that has meaning I start with a thumbnail and process it step by step. I also allow it to marinate, I dwell upon it. Once I have a good idea of my finished project I start. I look at the whole process as an exercise to produce an image that I feel represents my best efforts. What projects are you currently working on? I’m starting inktober, but besides that I’m working on an one with demon heads attached to his belt. I’ve been working on this for a year or two.
Any advice or lessons you’ve learned? The best advice I could give a young artist is to learn as much as possible. The best thing you can do is draw, draw, and draw. Draw all the time and draw everything you see. The more you draw the better you’ll be. And drawing is the best thing you can do for your art. Even if you are not focused on realism, it will affect you sensibilities and your craft. Who are your favorite Artists? I love Alphonse Mucha and other artists like John Singer Sargent. I enjoy realism and surrealistic painters. As I’ve previously stated I also enjoy comic books and the artists who create them. Why do you think art is important? I’ve seen it over and over, but believe it’s true. “Earth without art is just eh” and it’s true. It gives a visual language that goes past boundaries and ethnicities. I can paint or draw something, and without a language that is spoken, communicates an idea to them. It tells stories without words, it speaks without a voice, it communicates with no language. It allows people to express themselves clearly and expressively. Why do you think strengthening the community is important? Community is very important because it encompasses all around you. I feel it is of the utmost importance to positively affect those around you. Our community can become a focal point to rally and bring a sense of can do that. Art can help communities heal. The community I belong to feels fractured due to recent political trends. Our community needs strengthening and it needs to have a commonality. We have so much more in common than differences, but we have so many things pulling us apart. How can people follow your work? People can follow me mainly on Instagram @art_of_pg2
