O diálogo possível de eclética e rica programação Ao completar oito anos de história recente, o Museu Oscar Niemeyer vive momento especial em sua programação: o de oferecer ao público a possibilidade de apreciar, refletir, interpretar e construir diálogos paralelos entre as multifacetadas mostras em cartaz. Proveniente da Espanha, “De Picasso a Gary Hill” se propõe a fazer um “mapa” da arte moderna ocidental. Um amplo recorte que reúne 35 nomes consagrados, como Picasso, Klee, Chagall, Tàpies, Dalí, Calder, Boltanski, Nauman e Gary Hill, além dos brasileiros Aldemir Martins, Antônio Bandeira e Letícia Parente.

Da aventura moderna para o universal eixo temático design e sustentabilidade, que norteiam a “Reinvenção da Matéria”, integrante da Bienal Brasileira de Design – Curitiba. A exposição exibe objetos produzidos a partir de matériasprimas naturais e recicladas. Peças que comprovam a longínqua antecipação da célebre Bauhaus, que preconizava a integração de todas as artes e a necessidade de se aliar a estética à função –agora também à sustentabilidade. Um paralelo que pode ser estabelecido com “Modernos Brasileiros + 1”, na qual mestres do design do moderno mobiliário brasileiro até hoje servem de referenciais para o design contemporâneo. Atualidade também a ser observada pela ótica da arte. “O Estado da Arte - 40 anos de arte contemporânea no Paraná” reflete sobre as eventuais raízes históricas dessa visualidade no Estado até a produção atual.

Ao mesmo tempo se tem o contraponto nos primórdios da pintura no Paraná, com o norueguês Alfredo Andersen, que além de retratos e paisagens também se dedicou às marinhas. Que sob outro enfoque, na mostra fotográfica “Marinhas — Arqueologia da Morte”, se reverte em questionamento ao estilo acadêmico. Nela, as marinhas são apresentadas em forma de objetos em deterioração, caracterizados como “náufragos da existência”. Já a escultora Magda Frank trabalhou a construção da forma e da geometrização da figura humana como algumas de suas principais características. Para “fechar”, a exposição fotobiográfica de Maria Helena Vieira da Silva assume caráter mais intimista e revela a artista mulher, amiga e ilustradora. Com isto, desejamos que cada um estabeleça o melhor diálogo possível com esta programação, detalhada nesta edição da Museu Oscar Niemeyer em Revista.

Upon completing eight years of recent history, the Oscar Niemeyer Museum is at a very special moment in its programming: that of offering the public the opportunity of appreciating, reflecting upon, interpreting and creating parallel dialogs between the multifaceted exhibits being shown. Originated from Spain, “From Picasso to Gary Hill” proposes to draw a ‘map’ of modern occidental art. An ample clipping that brings together 35 famous names, such as Picasso, Klee, Chagall, Tàpies, Dalí, Calder, Boltanski, Nauman and Gary Hill, plus Brazilians’ Aldemir Martins, Antônio Bandeira and Letícia Parente.

From modernist adventure to the universal thematic axis, design and sustainability, which point to “Material Reinvention”, part of the Brazilian Design Biennale – Curitiba. The exhibition shows objects created from natural and recycled raw materials. Pieces that are evidence of the extremely precocious and celebrated ‘Bauhaus’, which professed the integration of all types of art and the need of joining aesthetics to function – now added to sustainability.

A parallel that can be established with “Modern Brazilians + 1”, in which design masters of modern Brazilian furniture are still a reference in contemporary design. A contemporaneity that can also be observed through the eyes of art. “The State of Art – 40 years of contemporary art in Paraná” contemplates upon the eventual historical roots of this visibility in the state up to the present production.

Simultaneously, we have a counterpoint in the primordial Paraná painting, the Norwegian Alfredo Andersen, who dedicated himself to portraits and landscapes as well as to marines. From another angle, the photographic exhibit “Marines — Archeology of Death” reverts itself to a questioning of the academic style. In that, show marines are presented in the form of objects in decomposition, characterized as ‘castaways of existence’. Sculptor Magda Frank, as one of her main characteristics, worked at building the form and the geometry of the human figure. To wind up, Maria Helena Silva’s photobiographic exhibition takes on a more intimate characteristic and reveals the female 3 artist, friend, and illustrator. With all this, we hope that each and any one will be able to establish the best possible dialogue with this program, as detailed in this edition of the Museu Oscar Niemeyer em Revista.

Magda Frank:

Homenagem Mais de cinquenta anos depois, as obras de Magda Frank voltam ao solo brasileiro na exposição “Homenagem”. A primeira vez que o público brasileiro teve contato com as obras da escultora húngara, naturalizada argentina, foi em 1957 na Bienal de São Paulo.

“Homenagem” apresenta mais de 150 obras em diversos materiais, representando assim o grande espectro de interesses plásticos da artista e a maestria demonstrada em cada técnica: bronze, mármore, madeira e concreto. Alem disso, a mostra conta com desenhos e esboços de obras e uma série de textos escritos com Magda, que vão aproximar o visitante do seu legado.

Segundo Mariana Rodríguez Iglesias, assistente de curadoria da exposição, a obra de Magda Frank pode ser considerada “monumental e pré-colombiana, mas atemporal porque trabalha sobre bases primordiais da estrutura da arte”.

Obras “Existem numerosas obras que se podem considerar ‘as principais’, dependendo da constelação plástico-poética que estamos analisando”, revela Mariana.

Destaque para “El Hombre Grande” (1952), da fase figurativa: “é um trabalho onde se condensam dor e esperança”. Já “Diálogo” (1967) representa os questionamentos acerca da geometria abstrata. No terreno do universo pré-colombiano, “Progressão Geométrica” (1979) é considerada, segundo afirma a curadora, a mais forte e eloquente de suas obras, “um monumento à eternidade”.

Over fifty years later, Magda Frank’s works come back to Brazilian soil in the Exhibition “Homage” “Homage” presents over 150 works on diverse materials, thus representing the the artist’s great spectrum of interests in plastic arts and the mastery demonstrated in each one of the techniques: bronze, marble, wood and concrete.

Apart from this the exhibit has designs and sketches of works and a series of texts written by Magda, which will bring the visitor closer to her legacy.

In the pre Colombian universe, Progressão Geométrica” (1979) according to the curator is considered, the most powerful and eloquent of his works, “a monument to eternity”.

Au fil du temps A vida de Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, pintora portuguesa de maior notoriedade internacional do século 20, é revelada numa série de fotogramas que compõem a exposição “Au fil du temps: um percurso fotobiográfico de Maria Helena Vieira da Silva”.

Na exposição, o visitante compartilhará da intimidade da artista por meio de imagens, documentos, obras e testemunhos de amigos, artistas e críticos.

A viagem proposta pela exposição cobre desde o nascimento até a juventude vividas em Lisboa. Também está registrada a passagem por Paris em fotografias da casa-atelier do Boulevard Saint-Jacques onde viveu com o pintor Arpad Szenes. Inclusive, a vida a dois com Arpad é tema central da fotobiografia, com registros de grande cumplicidade.

Também estão documentados os cerca de sete anos de exílio no Brasil, durante a Segunda Guerra, e o tempo vivido em Portugal, nas décadas de setenta e oitenta.

Originalmente, a exposição foi criada para comemorar o centenário do nascimento da artista (1908-1992) e foi elaborada por Marina Bairrão Ruivo, diretora da Fundação Arpad Szenes-Vieira da Silva, a documentalista Sandra Santos e a pesquisadora Ana Ruivo, com base no acervo da entidade, e muitas fotografias cedidas por pessoas que conviveram com a artista.

Au fil du temps The life of Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, the most internationally notorious Portuguese painter of the 20th century, is revealed in a series of photograms in the exhibition “Au fil du temps: a Maria Helena Vieira da Silva photobiographic path”.

In this exhibition, the visitor can share the artist’s intimacy through images, documents, works and testimony given by friends, artists and critics.

The trip proposed in the exhibition covers from birth to youth, all in Lisbon. Also registered is her passing through Paris in photographs of the home-atelier at Boulevard Saint-Jacques, where she lived with painter Arpad Szenes. The life with Arpad is the central theme of the photobiography, with registers of great complicity.

Also documented are the approximately seven years spent in exile in Brazil, during the Second World War, and the time lived in Portugal during the seventies and eighties.

Originally, the exhibition was created to commemorate the centenary of the artist’s birth (1908-1992), and was prepared by Marina Bairrão Ruivo, director of the Arpad Szenes–Vieira da Silva Foundation, the documentarist Sandra Santos, and researcher Ana Ruivo. It was based on the institution’s collection and a large number of photographs lent by people who shared the artist’s life.

obra de Miguel Bakun Autodidata e independente. Assim foi Miguel Bakun (19091963), nascido em Mallet, na região sudeste paranaense, que após permanecer por seis anos na Marinha Brasileira, começou a pintar nos anos 1930 em Curitiba, onde viveu e desenvolveu sua produção artística. Apenas por um breve período, em 1939, sem muito reconhecimento, Bakun viveu no Rio de Janeiro. Antes de dedicar-se profissionalmente à pintura, o artista também trabalhou como fotógrafo, pintor de letreiros e anúncios, além de decorador de interiores.

“Paranaense de descendência eslava, esse pintor autodidata encontrou suas soluções plásticas na prática e na experimentação da pintura, através de uma enriquecida experiência de ligação entre homem, paisagem e natureza. É desse embate direto que surge a afirmação de uma singularidade que se constitui em sua obra pictórica. Nos seus quase trinta anos de trabalho dedicados à pintura, adotou poucos preceitos da pintura e da perspectiva, para a construção do espaço pictórico o artista inventava de modo prático e intuitivo suas próprias soluções”, explica Eliane Prolik, uma

das curadoras da mostra ‘Miguel Bakun - Na Beira do Mundo’, que permaneceu no Museu Oscar Niemeyer até 15 de agosto e marcou as comemorações aos 100 anos de nascimento do artista.

De acordo com Eliane, a exposição culmina esse processo de releitura contemporânea da obra singular de Bakun, iniciado por duas outras exposições recentes de sua produção organizadas em 2009: a mostra “Miguel Bakun – A Natureza do Destino”, na Casa Andrade Muricy, e pela primeira vez fora do âmbito regional, os trabalhos do artista foram mostrados no Instituto de Arte Contemporânea – IAC, em São Paulo. No MON, em 2003, Bakun foi o primeiro artista paranaense que recebe uma grande mostra de sua produção.

“A exposição no MON teve o grande feito de libertá-lo de uma leitura provincial e mostrar seu efetivo papel no modernismo. Bakun transcende a arte paranaense e está entre os grandes pintores do modernismo brasileiro”, ressalta o curador, crítico de arte, e professor de História da PUC-RJ, Ronaldo Brito, que juntamente com Eliane, assinou a curadoria da mostra.

“Miguel Bakun - Na Beira do Mundo” foi composta por 48 pinturas e 15 desenhos. A presença desta seleção de desenhos, em sua maioria, nanquim sobre papel, ajudaram a entender a destreza, a força rítmica e o espaço de Bakun. A seleção de pinturas incluiu dois autorretratos que são obras-primas, como o quadro “Porta dos Sonhos”, exibido na Bienal de São Paulo (1985).

“A mostra também apresentou suas extraordinárias marinhas, quatro trabalhos da importante série dos troncos, pinheiros e outras paisagens como a belíssima Árvore Amarela, além de algumas naturezas mortas”, destaca Eliane. As obras selecionadas fazem parte do acervo do Museu de Arte da Universidade Federal do Paraná (MUSA), Museu de Arte Contemporânea do Paraná, Museu Metropolitano de Arte de Curitiba/FCC e do próprio acervo do MON, da família do artista e de coleções particulares.

O colecionador e admirador da arte de Bakun, Ário Taborda Dergint, 79, cedeu dois quadros de suas nove obras do artista para a exposição no MON. A paixão pela arte começou ainda quando pequeno, já que seu avô também pintava. Frequentador assíduo de museus e vernissages, foi nos anos 1960 que Dergint iniciou sua coleção. “Nunca canso de olhar as pinturas de Bakun.

Sempre descobrimos algo a mais. É uma sensação de como entrasse, literalmente, no quadro. Ele gostava de pintar, não se prostituiu, não fez a pintura para agradar ninguém, já que não se subordinou a um mestre”, observa o colecionador.

Rodrigo Naves, importante crítico brasileiro, escreveu para apresentação de Miguel Bakun na exposição no IAC, em São Paulo, em 2009: “Quando devidamente avaliada, a obra de Bakun pode adquirir um peso de que atualmente sequer suspeitamos. E isso não pelo fato de ele constituir uma singularidade excêntrica, figura romântica emblemática a valer mais que sua pintura. Como Ronaldo Brito bem alertou, transformá-lo em mais um caso do meio de arte nacional seria um desserviço. As melhores telas de Bakun — cuja irregularidade não deve ser ocultada — criam uma representação original e dissonante de nossa natureza. Distante tanto do caráter singelo e acolhedor da natureza de Tarsila (na fase pau-brasil) quanto do mundo poroso e tristonho de Guignard, a realidade de Bakun revela, ao mesmo tempo, traços intensos e sombrios.

A paleta reduzida do pintor — em geral, limitada a amarelo, azul, verde e branco — alcança uma forma de representação em

que luz e sombra, vivacidade e abandono convivem de maneira problemática e inovadora, tanto em termos propriamente pictóricos — luz e sombra jamais se mostram como claro-escuro — quanto do ponto de vista de uma concepção da realidade. Os amarelos de Bakun sugerem uma realidade afirmativa que seus azuis de pronto põem em xeque. O seu sentimento de mundo não supõe um embate trágico com um universo que lhe volta as costas.

Van Gogh sem dúvida anima sua pintura. Mas para o holandês o mundo tinha uma evidência que escapa a Bakun.”

temperamento sabidamente retraído, pode-se dizer que Miguel Bakun incorporou a timidez e o acanhamento do seu próprio meio de arte, mas para potencializá-lo como virtude.”

Do historiador e crítico de arte Artur Freitas, no seu texto Miguel Bakun e a Dispersão da Paisagem: “A matéria pictórica, em Bakun, é via de regra um assunto em si mesmo, mas um assunto desviado, por vezes rude e desajeitado, embora sempre franco e imprevisto – de toda forma, um dos tantos modos que a experiência da pintura moderna assumiu no contexto contraditório da arte brasileira.

A beleza da natureza não está no seu caráter monumental, mas, ao contrário, na sua mais absoluta singeleza. Dono de um

Trajetória “Vida, luz e movimento são predicados que necessito em meus quadros”, escreveu Bakun em 1960. Mas, foi em 1940, que o artista teve o estímulo para sua produção artística quando participou de um ateliê coletivo, localizado entre a Praça Tiradentes e a Generoso Marques, junto com Loio-Pérsio, Alcy Xavier, Marcel Leite e outros.

Em 1944, suas obras foram expostas na Exposição de Arte Paranaense no Rio de Janeiro, mostra esta promovida pela Sociedade Amigos de Alfredo Andersen, e do Salão Municipal de Arte, em Curitiba. De 1946 a 1962, participou intensamente das edições locais do Salão Paranaense de Belas Artes e do Salão de Belas Artes da Primavera do Clube Concórdia, com diversas premiações e, em 48 e 49, seu trabalho esteve no Salão Nacional de Belas Artes, no Rio de Janeiro.

Foi em 1949 que Bakun construiu um ateliê nos fundos de sua casa, e promoveu uma exposição aberta ao público. No ano seguinte, dedica-se à execução de pinturas murais (aproximadamente 517 metros quadrados) na residência do então governador, Moysés Lupion, hoje Castelo do Batel. Membro da Associação Paranaense de Artistas (APA), expõe nas mostras organizadas por essa entidade, como o Salão de Maio, e visita, junto com um grupo de artistas paranaenses, a I Bienal Internacional de São Paulo.

Em 1957, realiza individual na Biblioteca Pública do Paraná e participa da coletiva Mostra de Pintores do Paraná, no Museu Nacional de Belas Artes e no Museu de Arte de São Paulo. Já em 1958, expõe na coletiva 6 Pintores do Paraná, na Galeria Cocaco, onde tem seus trabalhos comercializados.

Um ano antes da sua morte, em 1962, Miguel Bakun pinta cafezais e outras paisagens do norte do Paraná durante sua permanência na fazenda de seu amigo e colecionador, Oscar Martins Gomes. Após sua morte, foram organizadas algumas mostras retrospectivas no Paraná e sua obra participou da 18ª Bienal Internacional de São Paulo, na Mostra Expressionismo no Brasil: Heranças e Afinidades e da Bienal Brasil Século XX, no módulo O Modernismo, na Fundação Bienal de São Paulo.

The singularity of Miguel Bakun´s work Autodidact and independent. That was Miguel Bakun (1903 – 1963), born in Mallet, in the southeast of Paraná, who after six years in the Brazilian navy began to paint around the thirties, in Curitiba. There he lived and developed his artistic production. For a brief while, during 1939, and with little recognition, Bakun lived in Rio de Janeiro. Before dedicating himself to professional painting, the artist also worked as a photographer, billboard and ad painter, besides interior decor.

“A Paranaense of Slavic descent, this self -learned painter found his plastic solutions practicing and experimenting with painting, through an enriched experience linking mankind, landscape and nature. From this direct encounter surged the singularity expressed in his pictorial works. In his nearly thirty years of dedication to painting, he adopted but few painting and perspective precepts. In order to create pictorial space, the artist invented his own solutions, practically and intuitively”, explains Eliane Prolik, one of the “Miguel Bakun – At the Edge of the World” exhibition curators.

The exhibition was held at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum up to August 15th, and commemorated the 100 years of the artist’s birth.

According to Eliane, the exhibition’s highlight is this procedure of contemporary rereading of Bakun’s singular work, which began with two other recent exhibitions of his production, organized in 2009: the exhibit “Miguel Bakun – the Nature of Destiny”, at Casa Andrade Muricy, and for the first time out of the regional area, the artist’s works were shown at the Instituto de Arte Contemporânea – IAC, in São Paulo. At the MON, during 2003, Bakun was the first Paranaense artist to be granted a large exhibit of his works.

“The MON exhibition was the great instrument for liberating him from the provincial reading of his art and for displaying his effective role in modernism. Bakun transcends Paranaense art and is amongst the great painters of Brazilian modernism,” points out Ronaldo Brito, curator, art critic, and history teacher at PUC RJ, who jointly with Eliane, undersigned as exhibition curator.

“Miguel Bakun - At the Edge of the World” comprised by 48 paintings and 15 drawings. The presence of this selection of drawings, mostly ink on paper, helped to understand Bakun’s dexterity, rhythmic power and space. The painting selection included two self-portraits, masterpieces, such as ‘Porta dos Sonhos’ (Dream Doors), shown at the São Paulo Biennale of 1985. “The exhibit also presented his extraordinary marine paintings, four works from the important series of tree trunks, pine trees and other landscapes with the beautiful “Armored Amarelle (Yellow Tree), besides a few still life works,” Eliane points out. The selected works are part of the collection belonging to the MUSA - Museu de Arte da Universidade Federal do Paraná (Paraná Federal University Art Museum), the Museu de Arte Contemporânea do Paraná, (the Paraná Contemporary Art Museum), the FCC - Museu Metropolitano de Arte de Curitiba (The Curitiba Metropolitan Art Museum),the MON collection, from the artist’s family and private collections.

Collector and admirer of Bakun´s art, Ário Taborda Dergint, 79, lent two paintings from the nine he has for MON´s exhibition. His passion for art began at a tender age, seeing as his grandfather also painted. An habitué of museums and vernisages, it was during the sixties that Dergint began his collection. “I never tire of looking at Bakun’s paintings. We always discover another little something. It feels as if one is actually in the picture. He liked painting, never prostituted himself, did not paint to please anybody, seeing as he was not subordinated to a master”, says the collector.

In 2009, Rodrigo Naves, an important Brazilian critic, wrote an introduction of Miguel Bakun at the IAC exhibition, in São Paulo: “When properly evaluated, Bakun’s work may gain an importance we scarcely realize. Moreover, this is not because he constitutes an eccentric singularity, an emblematic and romantic type that is worth more than his painting. As well pointed out by Ronaldo de Brito, transforming him into just another case of the national art ambience would be a disservice. Bakun’s best canvasses - the irregularity of which

should not be hidden – create an original and dissonant representation of our nature.

Distant from the single and warm character of Tarsila’s nature (during the pau-brasil phase) as much as from the porous and sad world of Guignard, Bakun´s reality reveals, simultaneously, intense and somber lines.

The painter’s reduced pallet – generally limited to yellow, blue, green and white – reaches a form of presentation in which light and shade, vivacity and abandonment coexist in a problematic and innovative manner, in actual pictorial terms – light and shadow are never shown as light-dark - as much as in his conception of reality.

Bakun´s yellows suggest an affirmative reality, which his blues immediately oppose.

His feeling about the world do not suppose a tragic encounter with an universe that turns its back on him. Van Gogh undoubtedly stimulates his painting. However, for the Dutchman, the world has evidence that escapes Bakun”.

According to historian and art critic Artur Freitas´ text, Miguel Bakun and landscape dispersion: “As a rule, Miguel Bakun’s pictorial material is a subject in itself, but a derailed subject, sometimes rough and clumsy, although always frank and unforeseen - anyway, one of the many forms that modern painting took on in the contradictory context of Brazilian art.

The beauty of nature is not in its monumental character, but quite to the contrary, in its purest simplicity. Owner of a well-known and withdrawn temperament, one might say that Miguel Bakun incorporated timidity and shyness from his own art , but to potentialize them as virtues”.

Trajectory “Life, light and movement are predicates that I need in my paintings”, Miguel Bakun wrote in 1960. However, it was in 1940 that the artist was stimulated towards his artistic production, when he took part in a collective studio, established between Praça Tiradentes and Praça Generoso Marques, together with Loio-Pérsio, Alcy Xavier, Marcel Leite and others.

In 1944, his works were exhibited at the Exposição de Arte Paranaense in Rio de Janeiro, where that exhibit was sponsored by the Sociedade de Amigos de Alfredo Andersen (The Friends of Afredo Andersen Society) and by The Salão Municipal de Arte (The Municipal Art Salon), in Curitiba. From 1946 to 1962, he intensely took part in the Salão Paranaense de Belas Artes (Paraná Salon of Fine Arts) and in the Salão de Belas Artes da Primavera (Spring Salon of Fine Arts) at the Concordia Club, winning a number of prizes; in 1948 and 1949, his works were in the Salão Nacional de Belas Artes (National Salon of Fine Arts), in Rio de Janeiro.

It was in 1949 that Bakun built a studio in his back garden and promoted an exhibition open to the public. The following year, he dedicates himself to painting murals, (approximately 517 square meters) at the residence of the governor , Moysés Lupion, nowadays the Batel Castle. Member of the Associação Paranaense de Artistas (APA) (Paraná Artists Association), he participates in the exhibitions organized by said entity, such as the May Salon, and visits, together with a group of Paraná artists, the I Bienal Internacional de São Paulo (The I International Biennale of São Paulo).

In 1957, Bakun undertakes an individual exhibition at the Paraná Public Library and takes part in the collective Mostra de Pintores do Paraná (Paraná Painters Exhibit) at the Museu de Belas Artes (Fine Arts Museum) and at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (São Paulo Art Museum). In 1958, he participates in the exhibition 6 Pintores do Paraná (6 Paraná Painters), at the Cocaco Gallery, where his works are commercialized.

A year before his death, in 1962, Miguel Bakun paints coffee plantations and other North of Paraná landscapes during his stay at the farm of his friend and collector Oscar Martins Gomes. After his death, a few retrospective exhibits were organized in Paraná, and his works were at the 18th São Paulo Art Biennale, in the exhibit Expressionismo no Brasil: Heranças e Afinidades (Expressionism In Brazil: Inheritances and Affinities), and at the XX Century Biennale, in The Modernism module, at the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo.

Há muitas formas do lugar influenciar, provocar, dar novos significados ou mesmo reinventar a obra do artista. Assim foi o Brasil para muitos que pisaram aqui: Frans Post, Jean Baptiste Debret, Lasar Segall e Yolanda Mohalyi são alguns nomes. Para o pintor norueguês Alfredo Andersen, adotar a cidade litorânea de Paranaguá como seu novo lar, no final do século 19, a mudança foi clara. Respirar ares mais quentes e dias ensolarados, naturalmente, dotou sua obra de mais luminosidade.

Fato que norteia a composição da mostra “Alfredo Andersen – Da Noruega ao Brasil, 150 Anos de História do Pai da Pintura Paranaense”, que entrará em cartaz no Museu Oscar Niemeyer (MON), em 23 de outubro. “Esta exposição destacará Andersen à procura da luz, ou melhor, a transformação e a influência da luz do sol de um país tropical na obra do artista”, explica o curador Wilson Andersen Ballão, acrescentando que a montagem da exposição é motivada pela comemoração do sesquicentenário do artista.

A mostra será um dos muitos eventos previstos para celebrar os 150 anos de nascimento de Andersen. “Mostrará a trajetória de vida de Alfredo Andersen, iniciando com os quadros pintados em Kristiansand (no sul da Noruega), sua cidade natal, quadros de Oslo, telas pintadas a bordo do navio, as primeiras telas que pintou em solo brasileiro - Porto de Cabedelo, na Paraíba, Paranaguá, Serra do Mar e, por fim, o período mais rico de seu trabalho, o de Curitiba e do interior do Paraná e do Rio de Janeiro”, informa Ballão.

Serão ao todo 120 telas do pintor, óleo sobre tela, sendo algumas delas, inéditas do grande público e outras bastante conhecidas. A mostra ainda conta com alguns desenhos do artista. “Já há algum tempo o MON planeja fazer uma grande exposição de Andersen. Não pude dizer não ao honroso e desafiante convite feito pela Sra. Maristela (Requião) para que eu mesmo assumisse a curadoria da exposição”, contou Wilson Ballão.

Boa parte das obras pertence a colecionadores, o restante aos acervos do Museu Alfredo Andersen, Sociedade Amigos de Alfredo Andersen e a instituições públicas e privadas. “A exposição foi concebida para que o público entenda e possa acompanhar a trajetória de vida e da obra de Andersen. Teremos o período da Noruega, o período que relata sua viagem ao Brasil, o período que demonstra suas primeiras impressões da terra que viria adotar, o período de Paranaguá e os que relatam o tempo em que

Andersen já se considerava brasileiro, observando e captando a alma e o cotidiano do povo”, detalha.

Segundo Wilson Ballão, a idéia da exposição não é somente mostrar ao público o trabalho pictórico de Andersen através de algumas de suas mais significativas obras, mas transmitir a importância dele para o desenvolvimento cultural e social do Paraná. “E do amor que ele dedicou a sua nova terra ao ponto de trocar seu nome de Alfred Emil para Alfredo Emilio”, revela o curador, que é bisneto de Andersen, e neto de Thorstein Andersen, um dos quatro filhos que o pintor teve com Sra. Anna, uma parnanguara descedentes de índios carijós.

O pintor norueguês se mudou para Curitiba no ano de 1902, disposto a enfrentar o desafio de viver na nova cidade apenas de sua arte, após morar alguns anos em Paranaguá. “Se analisarmos aquele momento na história, concluímos que ele foi o responsável pelo processo inicial do ensino da arte no Paraná. Ele fundou a primeira escola de arte do Estado, ao redor da qual todo o processo cultural do Paraná foi se sedimentando, tomando forma para chegar ao que hoje temos”, ressalta Wilson Ballão. Alguns dos discípulos de Andersen que formaram a primeira geração de artistas profissionais do Estado são De Frederico Lange de Morretes, Gustavo Kopp, Estanislau Traple, Theodoro de Bona e Waldemar Curt Freyesleben.

MON pays homage to the 150 years of Alfredo Andersen with an exhibition that shows the artist’s trajectory. He is considered the forerunner in teaching the pure Arts in Paraná There are many forms by which the site may influence, provoke, bring new meanings or even reinvent the artist’s work. That is how Brazil was for many of those who landed here: Frans Post, Jean Baptiste Debret, Lasar Segall e Yolanda Mohalyi are some of them.

For the Norwegian painter Alfredo Andersen, adopting the seaside city of Paranaguá as his new home, at the end of the 19th Century, the change was evident. Breathing warmer airs and sunny days, naturally, provided his work with greater luminosity.

A fact that directs the composition of the exhibition “Alfredo Andersen - From Norway to Brazil, 150 Years of History of the Father of Paranaense Painting”, which will be shown at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum (MON), on the 23rd of October. “ This exhibition will highlight Andersen searching for light, or better, the transformation and the influence of sunlight of a tropical country over the artist’s work”, curator Wilson Andersen Ballão explains, adding that preparing the exhibition is due to the commemoration of the artist’s sesquicentennial.

The exhibit will be one of the many events foreseen to celebrate the 150 years of Andersen’s birth. “It will show Andersen’s life trajectory, beginning with the paintings made in Kristiansand (in the south of Norway), his city of birth, paintings from Oslo, paintings made aboard the ship, the first paintings made on Brazilian land – Porto de Cabedelo, in the state of Paraíba, Paranaguá, the Serra do Mar, and finally, the richest period of his work, in Curitiba, in the interior of Paraná and in Rio de Janeiro”, Ballão informs.

Overall, there will be 120 pictures by the painter, oil on canvass, some of which unknown and some well-known to the greater public. The exhibit will also show some of the artist’s drawings. “For quite a while, the MON has been planning a large exhibition on Andersen. I couldn’t say no to the praiseworthy and defiant request made by Mrs. Maristela (Requião) for me to take on the task of being the exhibition’s curator”, Ballão told us.

Good part of the works belong to private collectors, and the remainder to the Alfredo Andersen Museum’s collection, the Friends of Alfredo Andersen Society and to public and private institutions. “The exhibit was conceived so that the public understands and can follow Andersen’s life and work trajectory. We will have the Norway period, the period that recounts his trip to Brazil, the period during which he shows his first impressions of the land he would come to adopt, the period in Paranaguá and those that recount the time in which Andersen already considered himself a Brazilian, observing and capturing the soul and everyday life of the people”, he details.

According to Wilson Ballão, the exhibition’s idea is not only to show Andersen pictorials to the public, but to transmit his importance in the social and cultural development of Paraná. “And of the love he dedicated to his new land to the point of changing his name from Alfred Emil to Alfredo Emílio”, reveals the curator, who is a great-grandson of Andersen and grandson of Thorstein Andersen, one of the four sons that the painter had with Anna, a Paranaguá citizen descendant of carijó Indians.

The Norwegian painter moved to Curitiba in 1902, willing to face the challenge of living off his art in the new city, after having lived for a couple of years in Paranaguá.

“If we analyze that moment in history, we can come to the conclusion that he was responsible for the initial process of teaching art in Paraná. He grounded the first art school in the state, around which all the cultural process in Paraná was sedimented, taking on form to arrive at what we have today”, Wilson Ballão points out. Some of Andersen’s disciples that constituted the first generation of professional artists in the state were Frederico Lange from Morretes, Gustavo Kopp, Estanislau Traple, Theodoro de Bona and Waldemar Curt Freyesleben.

“Andersen wasn’t only the forerunner of art teaching in Paraná, but also, due to his strong intellectual upbringing, the agglutinating agent towards the artistic and cultural movement in the state. Alfredo was the teacher of a whole generation of artists that made Paraná art and that of Brazil”, the curator finalizes, remembering that the school grounded in 1902 is still functioning. It is called Atelier Alfredo Andersen, and attends an average of 600 students a year.

Where can Alfredo Andersen’s works be found • At the Alfredo Andersen Museum (Rua Mateus Leme, 336): the place where Andersen lived and taught painting and drawing, we will find many works, amongst them portraits, landscapes and paintings of the kind, that belong to the museum’s permanent collection, as well as many others on loan from institutions such as the Friends of Alfredo Andersen Society and from private collectors.

• There are also paintings in the MASP and in the National Museum of Fine Arts.

• There are quite a few of Andersen’s paintings at the Paranaense Museum, as well as in institutions such as the Clube Curitibano, the Paraná Board of Trade, and in the Federal University of Paraná Museum.

• MON has three beautiful Andersen pictures in its permanent collection.

• In Norway, in his city of birth - Kristiansand, there are a few of his pictures of the Norwegian period, and others that depict the Brazilian landscape, in the collection of the city’s museum.

• In Oslo, at the National Gallery, there is the famous portrait of his friend Knut Hamsun, the first nordic to win a Nobel Prize.

Pintura, vídeo, fotografia, instalação, intervenção no espaço, grafite, gravura e escultura. O Museu Oscar Niemeyer apresenta uma exposição inédita que reúne 150 obras de 80 artistas paranaenses que apresentam a diversidade poética e a liberdade dos parâmetros estéticos característicos da arte contemporânea.

Com o título “Estado da Arte: 40 Anos de Arte Contemporânea no Paraná — 1970-2010”, a mostra será dividida em duas salas: “Poéticas Transitivas”, com curadoria da professora doutora da Escola de Música e Belas Artes do Paraná (EMBAP), Maria José Justino, e o espaço “Expresso 2000”, com curadoria do crítico de arte e professor doutor da Faculdade de Artes do Paraná (FAP) Artur Freitas.

“A mostra é um mapeamento da produção artística contemporânea realizada no Paraná durante as últimas quatro décadas. Esse mapeamento, claro, não tem a pretensão de esgotar o assunto, mas sim de sugerir caminhos para a interpretação da produção artística recente em nosso Estado, confrontando-a com algumas das

principais questões poéticas da contemporaneidade. Trata-se, em síntese, de uma leitura possível sobre o assunto, e em hipótese nenhuma de uma leitura definitiva, até porque, em função do formato da exposição, muitos artistas importantes acabaram ficando de fora. Mesmo assim, é uma exposição inédita”, explica Artur Freitas, um dos curadores.

O processo de seleção para reunir as 150 obras que compõem a exposição, durou cerca de dois meses e foi fruto de um amplo esforço conjunto dos dois curadores. Partindo da experiência de ambos no campo da História da Arte no Paraná, foram realizadas visitas a acervos públicos e ateliês particulares, além de diversas reuniões com artistas até que os curadores chegassem à seleção definitiva de obras. “Embora predominem artistas de Curitiba, existem vários artistas que trabalharam ou ainda trabalham em outras cidades do Estado, como Maria Cheung, Letícia Marquez, Luiz Henrique Schwanke e Francisco Faria”, observa Freitas.

Segundo a curadora Maria José Justino o ponto de partida geral da mostra foi o ano de 1970. “Trata-se, é claro, de uma data caprichosa, mas que no contexto desta exposição anuncia o início de uma década aberta a experimentações poéticas sem precedentes, ao menos no contexto paranaense. É o momento inicial dos irreverentes Encontros de Arte Moderna, que no começo dos anos 1970, em plena repressão militar, abriram caminho para as primeiras ações performáticas e intervenções urbanas do Estado. É o momento, igualmente, dos Objetos Caipiras de João Osorio, das primeiras instalações de Olney Negrão e mesmo das diversas situações experimentais propostas por artistas como Lauro Andrade, Rettamozo ou Sérgio Moura”, explica.

A sala “Poéticas Transitivas”, com curadoria de Maria José Justino, tem um enfoque mais histórico e aborda artistas que começaram a produzir entre os anos 1970 e os 1990, embora boa parte deles ainda continue produzindo até os dias de hoje.

Algumas obras históricas foram reeditadas, como no caso de Luiz Carlos Rettamozo e do grupo Sensibilizar. Nesta sala, parte considerável das obras é oriunda de acervos públicos como o

MON, Museu de Arte Contemporânea do Paraná, Museu Metropolitano de Arte de Curitiba e o Museu da Gravura.

“Os artistas habitantes desta sala reacendem o princípio modernista do direito de errar: todo experimentalismo está autorizado.

Arte como pesquisa, jogo, contaminação existencial, guerrilha, atitude, pensamento, conhecimento, prazer. Sem ser zona de turbulência, como foram São Paulo e Rio, o Paraná é o espaço generoso da bricolagem sincrônica. Da autonomia da forma à arte relacional, se aposta na diversidade dos suportes: pintura, gravura, serigrafia, fotografia, performances (happenings), instalações (arte ambiental), arte postal e, hoje, tecnologias computadorizadas; e na variedade de materiais, desde o precário – terra, areia, pregos, sapatos, colheres, bacias plásticas, mangueiras etc. – até o sagrado, o corpo.

Os artistas questionam, dialogam, brincam com o espectador. Em algumas obras, o espectador é convidado a uma experiência visual; em outras, a materialidade da obra é um soco no estômago. Mas arte tem de ser assim, deve mexer conosco, deve reverberar em nós, senão não tem sentido”, ressalta a curadora.

Já no espaço “Expresso 2000”, o público encontra a produção mais atual paranaense, concentrando-se nas obras realizadas, justamente, durante os anos 2000. Algumas obras, inclusive, foram realizadas especialmente para a exposição. É o caso de artistas como Cleverson Oliveira, Cleverson Salvaro, coletivo Interlux Arte Livre, Joana Corona, Rimon Guimarães e Rodrigo Dulcio, que prepararam intervenções realizadas diretamente no espaço expositivo.

Todas as obras pertencem a acervos particulares.

“Nos anos 2000, a experiência estética da presença, em sua considerável variedade de suportes e discursos, foi um dos vetores dominantes da produção artística contemporânea. Tal vetor, no entanto, vem se desdobrando numa série de variações possíveis, boa parte delas dispostas a prolongar e atualizar, numa chave contemporânea, parte do legado simbólico da modernidade. The Oscar Niemeyer Museum presents an unabridged exhibition which brings together 150 works of 80 Paranaense artists who will present the poetic diversity and liberty of aesthetic parameters characteristic of contemporary art.

Entitled ‘‘Estado da Arte: 40 anos de arte contemporânea no Paraná — 1970-2010” (State of Art: 40 Years of Contemporary Art in Paraná — 1970-2010), the exhibit will be shown in two rooms: “Poéticas Transitivas” (Transitive Poetics), with curatorship of art critic and historian Maria José Justino, doctor professor of the Escola de Música e Belas Artes do Paraná (EMBAP) (Paraná School of Music and Fine Arts), and the “Expresso 2000” area, with curatorship of art critic Artur Freitas, doctor professor of the Faculdade de Artes do Paraná (Fap) (Paraná Art Faculty).

“The exhibit is the mapping of contemporary artistic production undertaken in Paraná over the last four decades. This mapping, of course, has no intention of exhausting the matter; however, it suggests manners by which one can interpret the recent artistic production in our state, confronting it with some of the main contemporary poetic issues. In short, it is a possible reading of the subject and, under no circumstances, a definite reading, as many important artists ended up being left out due to the format of the exhibition. Even so, it is an unabridged exhibition,” explains Artur Freitas, one of the curators.

The selection procedures to gather 150 works that make up the exhibition lasted for about two months and were the result of an ample and joint effort of the two curators. Beginning with their experience in the history of art in Paraná field, they visited public collections and private studios, apart from having a number of meetings with artists before arriving at a definite and painstaking selection of the works.

“Although Curitiba artists are predominant, there are various artists who worked or still work in other cities of the state, such as Maria Cheung, Letícia Marquez, Luiz Henrique Schwanke and Francisco Faria”, Freitas acknowledges.

According to curator Maria José Justino, the overall starting point of the exhibit was 1970. “This is a capricious date, of course, however, in the general context of this exhibition, it announces the beginning of a decade that is open to unprecedented poetic experimentations, at least in the Paranaense context. It is the initial period of the irreverent Modern Art Encounters, which opened the way to the first performatic and urban interventions within the state in the beginning of the seventies, during stringent military repression. It is also a moment of Objetos Caipiras (Hick Objects),

by João Osório, of the first installations By Olney Negrão, and even of the various experimental situations proposed by artists such as Lauro Andrade, Rettamozo or Sérgio Moura,” she explains.

The room “Transitive Poetics”, with curatorship of Maria José Justino, has an additional historic focus and covers artists that began their productions between the seventies and the nineties, although many of them continue to produce up to the present days. Some historic works were reedited, as was the case of Luiz Carlos Retamozzo and the Sensibilizar (Sensitizing) group. In this room, a greater part of the works originate from public collections such as the MON, the Museu de Arte Contemporânea do Paraná, Museu Metropolitano de Arte de Curitiba and the Museu da Gravura.

“The artists inhabiting this room relight the modernist principle of the right to mistakes: all experimentalism is authorized. Art as research, a game, existential contamination, guerilla, attitude, thought, knowledge, pleasure. Outside the São Paulo and Rio De Janeiro turbulence area, Paraná is the generous space of synchronic bricolage. From autonomous format to relational art, one gambles on the diversity of the supports: painting, engraving, serigraphy, photography, happenings, installations (environmental art), postal art and, nowadays, computerized technologies; and in the variety of materials, from the precarious – soil, sand, nails, shoes, spoons, plastic basins, hoses etc. – to the sacred, the body. The artists question, talk to and play with the onlooker. In some of the works, the onlooker is invited to a visual experiment; in others, the materiality of the work is a punch in the gut . However, art has to be this way, it should move us, should reverberate in us, otherwise it is senseless”, the curator emphasizes..

In the “Expresso 2000” space, the public sees an updated Paranaense production, which focus on the works produced precisely during the years 2000. Some of the works were specially made for the exhibition. This is the case of artists such as Cleverson Oliveira, Cleverson Salvaro, Interlux Arte Livre, Joana Corona, Rimon Guimarães and Rodrigo Dulcio, who prepared interventions carried out directly in the exhibition area. All of the works belong to private collections.

“In the years 2000, the aesthetic experience, in its considerable variety of speeches and supports, was one of the dominant vectors of contemporary artistic production. This vector however, is unfolding into a series of possible variations, a better part of them ready to prolong and update, in a contemporary key, part of modernity’s symbolic legacy. In this room, the public is able to observe some fundamental axis, such as the body, painting, image, poetic axis of space, the urban issue. There is also the neopop axis of the years 2000, which works not with the image of consumption and kitsch, but with its abstractionist forms, as for example, in the Glauco Menta and Juliana Burigo’s works. Furthermore, the axis of the nonplus, which in the context of recent art refers to certain works endowed with a corporeal structure that cannot be fixed to regular spatial coordinates, constant and unequivocal, as one may see in Tony Camargo’s clubs, or even in Cleverson Salvaro’s album, to mention a few strong examples”, Freitas concludes.

A paixão pela fotografia surgiu ainda quando criança. Com apenas quatro anos de idade, Azevedo permanecia horas intermináveis folheando a “National Geographic Magazine”. “Ficava absolutamente fascinado”, diz o colecionador da tradicional revista. O gosto passou de geração em geração, já que o avô de Azevedo era assinante do veículo, ou seja, o fotógrafo tem praticamente todas as edições deste o surgimento da revista.

Com 11 anos de idade, Azevedo ganhou sua primeira máquina fotográfica, uma Franka de Fole. Aos 13, já tinha um laboratório e havia feito curso por correspondência do Instituto Universal. “Queria saber como fotografar bem. Buscava tudo, revistas, livros, fotoclube. Nesta época não existiam bons cursos que hoje abundam e abusam do oportunismo de um momento em que todos fotografam quer com celular, quer com digitais de bolso”, ressalta. Também foi muito cedo que Azevedo se enveredou para o mundo das letras.

“Fotografia, música e poesia são uma constante em minha vida.

A arte é meu caminho, assim como a criação. Essa é a batida de meu coração. Essa é minha sina e minha canção”. A frase do fotógrafo, curador independente no universo das artes visuais, e editor de livros, Orlando Azevedo, resume a história deste português nascido em 1949, na Ilha Terceira, Açores, ladeada pelo monte Brasil. A Avenida do Brasil, em Lisboa, foi sua segunda residência, antes de, literalmente, pisar em terras brasileiras, aos 14 anos de idade, vindo junto com seu pai, que exercia cargo diplomático. “Estava escrito e marcado este grande encontro”, observa o então jovem que, novamente, voltou para Lisboa para cursar Direito. Anos mais tarde, a música o trouxe de volta. “Criei e fui líder intelectual de uma banda, hoje lendária, chamada A Chave, a verdadeira pioneira do rock no Paraná e que iniciou Paulo Leminski no universo da música elétrica, inclusive com suas primeiras gravações no mercado fonográfico”, conta.

Já em Lisboa, quando estudava Direito, trabalhou como free lancer para uma importante revista local, a A-Z. “Fotografar é acima de tudo meu modo de ser e de estar. É meu modo de vida e meu grito. Não existe inspiração e nem sequer acredito nisso no caminho da fotografia e da criação.

Existe, sim, muito transpiração e conspiração. Sou grato a minha profissão como fotógrafo, embora formado em Direito, e embora não gere fortuna e segurança econômica, me possibilitou que conhecesse lugares e pessoas que jamais imaginava. Quem cria e produz obra notória em tempo integral, dedicando sua vida a esta missão deveria ser totalmente isento de qualquer imposto. Ao contrário, deveria ter reconhecimento e estímulo. Um país e uma cidade sem arte e cultura são sem identidade, sem marca, sem visibilidade. O Brasil não é só futebol e samba, além de múltiplo, tem grandes e invulgares criadores em todas as áreas. Abre alas e dá passagem”, desabafa.

Com vários livros publicados, publicações em diversas revistas nacionais e internacionais, obras em museus como o International Center of Photography, em Nova York ou ainda no Museu Francês de Fotografia, Orlando Azevedo foi considerado em 1998 o artista português de destaque no universo das artes visuais residente no Brasil, através do Ministério das Relações Exteriores e Secretaria das Comunidades Portuguesas em Portugal. A grande maioria dos animais e objetos que formam a mostra foram recolhidos em Pontal do Sul, litoral paranaense. Para Azevedo, o ato de recolher os animais foi uma tarefa não tão fácil.

“Pássaros em decomposição exalam náusea e mágoa. Coisas do mundo da água e dos oceanos da memória. Fósseis em metamorfose. Transportar a ritualidade de seus cadáveres e o odor de seu ciclo era mais do que um desafio, era olhar a vida por um fio. Era carregar um andor de si mesmo”.

Todo o material foi fotografado em câmeras de grande formato visando um apurado resultado e definição técnica e estética. A

mostra é formada por 37 imagens impressas em papel Canson de algodão com longa durabilidade. Na produção, foram utilizadas máquinas HP profissionais de 12 cores para grandes formatos.

Toda a curadoria é realizada por seu autor que integra à sua obra poemas de autores de sua preferência filosófica e, pela constante relação que sua obra estabelece com a escrita poética e a música.

Para o artista, a mostra tem sua integridade, densidade e unidade no conjunto de todas as imagens. “Não existe em minha obra a imagem que mais gosto. Sempre digo que minha melhor foto é aquela que não fiz e guardo na alma e no olhar. Sou um guardador de sonhos, um guardião de um tempo ausente. Se minhas imagens e mostra provocarem emoção com o outro é o que

da paisagem e do desejo, da vida, em suas diferentes formas, em seu esplendor – como vimos em seu clássico Coração do Brasil e em várias outras obras – e em seus vestígios arqueológicos. Já Maria do Carmo Serem que é a mais conceituada historiadora e crítica da Península Ibérica comenta em seu texto: “O espírito enigmático que norteou a rica e luxuosa coleção produzida por Orlando de Azevedo, onde o belo se produz na encenação do horrível, insinua-nos a idéia de petrificação, onde se perfilam mitos de sempre que a ciência desdenha e assume e a fotografia representa.”

Marines — the archeology of death “Photography, music and poetry are a constant in my life. Art is my path, as is creation. This is my heartbeat. This is my lot and my song.” The phrase by the photographer, independent curator in the universe of visual arts, and book editor Orlando Azevedo summarizes the history of that Portuguese born in 1949 in the Ilha Terceira, alongside the Brazil hill, in the Açores. The Avenida do Brasil, in Lisbon, was his second home, prior to literally stepping onto Brazilian soil at the age of 14, having come with his father, who held a diplomatic job. “This great encounter was set and written in the books, remarks the young man, who again returned to Lisbon to graduate in Law. Years later, it was music that brought him back. “ I started up and was the intellectual leader of a band, nowadays a legend, the so called A Chave (The Key), the real rock pioneer in Paraná and that was Paulo Leminski’s initiator in the universe of electric music, including his first recordings in the phonograph market”, he tells us.

His passion for photography started when he was still a child. Only for years old, Azevedo spent interminable hours leafing through the National Geographic Magazine. “I was absolutely fascinated”, says the collector of the traditional magazine. That liking came down through the generations, since Azevedo’s grandfather was a subscriber of the magazine, that means, the photographer has practically every one of the magazine’s editions since its beginning.

At the age of 11, Azevedo was presented with his first camera, a “Franka” with bellows. At 13, he already had a lab and had undertaken a correspondence course with the Universal Institute. “ I wanted to know how to photograph well. I researched everything, magazines, books, photo club. During this period, there were no good courses as the ones that are abundant today, that use and abuse of the opportunism of a moment in which everyone photographs either with a mobile phone or with pocket digitals”, he points out. It was also very early that Azevedo engaged in the world of writing. During his school period at the Colégio Medianeira, in Curitiba, the photographer was the director of cultural affairs of the Student Guild, and promoted internal courses in literature and arts in general . In Lisbon, while he studied Law, he worked as freelancer for A-Z, a local magazine.

“Most of all, to photograph is my way of seeing and being. It is my way of life and my outcry. There is no inspiration in photography and creation, and I do not even believe in it. What really exists is a lot of perspiration and conspiracy. I am grateful to my profession as a photographer, although graduated in Law, and even if it does not generate a fortune and economic security, it has given me the opportunity of getting to know places and people I could have never imagined. Those who create and bring forth notorious work all the time, dedicating their whole lives to this mission, should be totally exempt from any taxation. Quite to the contrary, they should be recognized and stimulated. A country and a city without art and culture have no identity, no mark, no visibility. Brazil is not only soccer and samba; apart from being multiple, it has great and unusual creators in all areas. It is a door opener and a breakthrough”, is his outburst.

Having published many books, with articles in various national and international magazines, works in museums such as the International Center of Photography, in New York, or the French Museum of Photography, in 1998 Orlando Azevedo was considered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Department of Portuguese Communities in Portugal as the most outstanding Brazilian resident Portuguese artist in the visual arts universe. In 2003, he received the Paraná Talent Prize; in 2005, the Curitiba Chamber of Councilors awarded him the Honor and Merit Certificate due to his participation in the Portuguese Community in Curitiba and in the local culture; in 2007, he was granted the City of Curitiba culture and disclosure prize; and this year, he was invited by the Brazilian Embassy in Sri Lanka, by diplomat Pedro Bório and the Itamaraty/ Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to exhibit his work and give lectures in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and in Mumbai and Delhi, in India.

The public will be able to get to know all the fascination Orlando Azevedo has for the arts in the unedited exhibition “Marines – Archeology of Death”. For over two decades, the artist has photographed this theme and cycle. “Deep down, I always delve in who I was and what I am. We always return to the cocoon and its web. We keep on spinning an unending path, in a true self-portrait and an oracle of our inventory and shrine. We photograph what we are, revealing the shadow and its sun. Fears and upsets far from our ego altar ”, the artist emphasizes.

The majority of animals and objects that form the exhibit come from Pontal do Sul, on the coast of Paraná. For Azevedo, the act of gathering the animals was not an easy task. “Birds in decomposition exhale nausea and sorrow. Issues from the water world and the memory oceans. Fossils in metamorphosis. Transporting the rituality of their cadavers and the odor of their cycle was more than a challenge, it was looking at life hanging by a thread. It was carrying your own palanquin”.

All of the material was photographed in large chambers aiming for a fine result as well as technical and aesthetic definition. The exhibit is constituted by 37 images printed on long lasting cotton Canson paper. In the production process, professional HP 12 color machines for large formats were used. The author is the curator of the whole show, to which he integrates poems by authors of his philosophic preference as much as because of the constant relationship his work establishes with written poetry and music.

For the artist, the exhibit has its own integrity, density and unity in the group of images. “In my work, there is no image which I like the most. I always say that my best photo is the one I have yet to take,save in my soul and my look. I am a dream keeper, guardian of an absent period. If my images and exhibits provoke emotion unto others, that is what matters. It is useless to create something and keep it in drawers. The windows must open up and the pollen should follow the ways of the wind and its flight.

Emotion and creation is to divide and to add up. Only time will tell whether it is art or work. Today, photography has become an absolute commonplace, without criticism and criteria.

Above all, I still photograph for the pleasure and magic of the encounter, of the confrontation. The image that comes to you is a testimonial of your upbringing and spirituality.” After staying at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum, the itinerant exhibit goes to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília and Portugal.

The photographer and historian Boris Kossoy, recognized as the most important photograph researcher in Latin America, describes the artist’s work in the following manner: “Orlando Azevedo is the explorer who seeks connections, lives for and by it. The land photographer now turns towards the sea. He continues the search for data and fantasy, for the physical and the imaginary, the landscape and the desire, of life in its different forms, in its splendor – as we saw in his classic Coração do Brasil (Brazil’s Heart) and in many other works – and in his archeological clues. A photographer that does not come to a standstill at the apparent, that researches the soul of the being, the object, of the traces he discovers. And he shows us that the apparent has multiple facets. That is how Orlando Azevedo thinks of the world of representation - an effort at turning regional into universal, archeology of death, a commitment to life”.

On the other hand, Maria do Carmo Serem, the most reputable historian and critic in the Iberian peninsula, comments in her text: “The enigmatic spirit that guided the rich and luxurious collection delivered by Orlando Azevedo, where beauty is created in the portraying of the horrible, insinuates in us the idea of petrifaction, where the usual myths are profiled, being disdained and assumed by science and represented by photography.”

Exposição “De Picasso a Gary Hill” reúne obras significativas e nomes das Artes Visuais mundial do início do século passado à atualidade

Não há artista do século 20 mais famoso e influente do que Pablo Picasso. E da Arte Contemporânea, não há nada mais expressivo do que o uso dos meios tecnológicos, dos estímulos sensoriais, da vertigem. São fases separadas pelo tempo, pela estética, pelos conceitos. Mas também com semelhanças e que pelo objetivo pedagógico e cultural estão reunidas numa mesma exposição para proporcionar um “enxuto” panorama da arte moderna ocidental.

“De Picasso a Gary Hill” promete provocar reflexões desse passeio histórico pela produção artística internacional e ampliar o repertório do grande público ao possibilitar o acesso a trabalhos não tão divulgados, como os de Christian Boltanski, Bruce Nauman e Gary Hill. “A mostra cobre do marcante movimento que inicia a relativização do olhar e da percepção que foi o cubismo picassiano até a absorção pelo mundo das linguagens eletrônicas tão bem representadas pela obra de Gary Hill”, explica a curadoria da exposição, que buscou fugir de um corte focado nas influências Dada, do Movimento Pop e de outros “ismos”.

Pois então, que os artistas Magdalena Abakanowic, Christian Boltanski e Allan MacCollum resumem este grupo, batizado de Conceitos e Formas.

Para o final da exposição foi reservado o grupo Laços com a Tecnologia, onde estão artistas que expandem-se e incorporam a plenitude do espaço expositivo, provocam experiências sensoriais e virtualizam suas obras. Wandering through the spirit of Modernism or Modernism without Isms The exhibition “From Picasso to Gary Hill” gathers significant works and names of the world’s Visual Arts, from the beginning of the last century up to the present

There is no 20th century artist more influential than Pablo Picasso. Moreover, there is nothing more expressive in Contemporary Art than the use of technological means, of sensorial stimulations, of giddiness. These are phases separated by time, aesthetics, and concepts. However, they also present similarities, which are united in a same exhibition due to a pedogical and cultural objective - to provide a “lean” panorama of modern occidental art.

“From Picasso to Gary Hill” promises to provoke reflections of this historic wander through the international artistic output, and to widen the greater public’s repertoire by providing access to works that are not as widely publicized, as those of Christian Boltanski, Bruce Nauman and Gary Hill. “The exhibit covers the period from the remarkable movement that initiates the relativization of looking and of perception - the picassian cubism - until the the world´s absorbtion of the electronic languages so well represented in Gary Hill’s works”, the exhibition’s curators explains. They sought to escape from a bias focused on the influences of Dada, Pop Movement and other “isms”.

The exhibit, divided into seven blocks, has 47 works grouped in “non-rigid coalitions, which stimulate the observer to formulate his own illations about the artistic modernity of the 20th century in its full maturity”. There are 35 artists, the majority of them selected due to having presented manifest concern with the subject and with the form. In the first group, Expressive Figurativeness, we find the works of Picasso, Matisse, Torres-Garcia, Saura, Gonzales and Aldemir Martins, while artists Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí and Marc Chagal make up the Fantastic Paths group.

In Ludic Lirism, we find the works of Alexander Calder, José Sanleón, Antônio Bandeira and Jean Arp. Constructivist Ideas is the block composed by Arden Quin, Adolph Gottlieb, Alberto Bañuelos, Judd and Tony Smith. In the fifth group, referred to as The Value of Matter, the public can appraise the works of Cristina Iglésias, Miguel Navarro, Richard Serra and Antoni Tápies.

Following the time line, curators José Guedes and Roberto Galvão occupied themselves in building up a group that would also show that 20th century modernism “carries in its bulge the virus of its own end”. Therefore, artists Magdalena Abakanowic, Christian Boltanski and Allan MacCollum wind up this group, baptized as Concepts and Forms.

The last part of the exhibition was reserved for the Links to Technology group, where one finds the artists who expand and incorporate the plenitude of the exhibition space, provoke sensorial experiences and virtualize their works. They are Fischli/ David Peter Weiss, Bruce Nauman, Letícia Parente, Antoni Muntadas, Robert Smithson and the American - Gary Hill, who, as a matter of fact, is the worldwide Videoart pioneer.

The curators remember that, in the exhibit’s structuring procedures, SouthAmerican artists would be left out. Therefore, they call attention to four names of the austral continent that integrate and enrich the exhibition: Antônio Bandeira, one of the Tachism pioneers in the School of Paris; Letícia Parente, who is the precursor of Videoart in Brazil; the Cearense (from the state of Ceará) Aldemir Martins works with the cannibalistic syncretism of northeastern traditions; and Uruguayan Arden Quin, (recently deceased) responsible for creating the MADI movement that sought to insert movement and interactivity into works of art, which in turn contributed to the emergence of kinetic art and neoconcretism in Brazil.

The exhibition “From Picasso to Gary Hill” was conceived in Ceará, where it was shown at the Contemporary Art Museum (MAC-CE), and represented the state’s first opportunity of receiving works from international artists present at the exhibit. The initial idea was to prioritize the educational aspect, seeking to answer the requests of the Dragão do Mar (Sea Dragon) audience, an important cultural center in Fortaleza, of which the MAC-CE is part.

A exposição “De Picasso a Gary Hill” foi concebida no Ceará, onde permaneceu em cartaz no Museu de Arte Contemporânea (MAC-CE), e representou a primeira oportunidade do Estado em receber obras de artistas internacionais presentes na mostra. A idéia inicial era priorizar o foco educativo, buscando atender as demandas do público do Dragão do Mar, importante complexo cultural de Fortaleza e do qual o MAC-CE faz parte.

Em uma síntese do tema, poderíamos dizer que arte não tem objetivos mercadológicos ao contrário do design. O artista não recebe um briefing do cliente para criar; sua obra é uma interpretação própria, sua visão conceitual sobre determinado assunto. Já aqui temos controvérsias. Sabemos bem que ao longo da história, os mecenas buscavam melhorar suas próprias imagens por meio de subsídio aos artistas. Em resumo, arte encomendada. Como não existia o termo design antes do século 20, essas obras tinham objetivos “mercadológicos” claros.

Outra abordagem comum do tema é dizer que arte é para ser interpretada e design é para ser compreendido. Isso fica claro quando falamos de uma marca, de um sistema de identidade corporativa, de catálogo de produtos, da sinalização de um aeroporto. Contudo, quando vejo uma peça de mobiliário, por exemplo, uma cadeira, penso: Será que ela apenas deve ser entendida como um simples objeto para sentar? Isso é fácil de compreender. O designer, neste caso, não pode instigar o observador a “sentir” a cadeira, buscando novas sensações, novas emoções e até novas interpretações? Exis-

Although recurrent, this matter always generates many discussions, either between academics or professionals from the various areas. From time to time, new facts, new visions, different interpretations emerge, and once again, the philosophic confrontations are reopened. Alas, what is the difference between art and design?

In a synthesis of the matter, we could say that art does not have marketing objectives, quite the contrary to design. The artist does not create after receiving a briefing from the client; his work is his own interpretation, his conceptual vision in relation to a certain subject. Here, already, there is controversy. We well know that historically, the maecenas sought to improve their image by subsidizing the artists. All told, commissioned art. Since the term design did not exist prior to the 20th century, those works had clear ‘marketing’ objectives.

Another common approach to the matter is to say that art should be interpreted and design is to be understood. This becomes clear when referring to a brand name, to a corporate identification system, to product catalogs, signs in an airport. However, when seeing a piece of furniture – a chair, for example. Should it be simply seen as an

um público sedento por novidades com um apelo mais conceitual e menos padronizado.

No campo gráfico, profissionais como Stefan Sagmeister, Rico Lins, Guto Lacaz têm suas carreiras focadas em criações que chegam no limite da compreensão/interpretação. Sagmeister inclusive é um fiel defensor de que o bom design deve tocar o coração das pessoas. Em seus trabalhos, percebemos uma busca constante em quebrar o status quo do observador (virtude da arte) e movê-lo a tomar uma atitude (virtude do design). Muitos criativos seguiram esse caminho contestador ao longo da história e firmaram uma proximidade equilibrada das duas profissões. Vale lembrar de mais alguns nomes como Tibor Kalman, David Carson e Massimo Vignelli.

Podemos perceber que para cada argumento há outros raciocínios possíveis. Qual o certo? Como na arte, não existe certo ou errado, existem pontos de vista.

There is a new generation of designers who are beginning to break these art-design paradigms. We can see the example of Maarten Bass, and the Nynke Tynagel and Job Smeets couple, with daring interpretive pieces that do not cease to be functional (another virtue attributed to design). Large European and American galleries are specializing in art-design, envisioning a lucrative vein for a public that is starving for novelties with a conceptual and less standardized appeal.

In the graphic field, professionals such as Stefan Sagmeister, Rico Lins, and Guto Lacaz have their careers focused on creations that reach the limits of understanding/ interpretation. Sagmeister, includingly, is a faithful defender that good design should touch people’s hearts. In his works, one perceives a constant search to rupture the observer’s status quo (art virtue) and move him to take an attitude (design virtue).

A number of artistic people along history have followed this disputing road and consolidated an even proximity of the two professions. It is worth remembering a few more names, such as Tibor Kalman, David Carson and Massimo Vignelli.

We can notice that for each argument there are other possible reasoning’s. Which one is right? As in art, there is no right or wrong, there are points of view.

Fugir do comum. Este foi o principal critério utilizado na seleção da mostra inédita “Os Modernos Brasileiros +1”, que apresenta obras antes nunca expostas ao público, e que foram base do design contemporâneo, com conteúdo inédito de modernos designers e arquitetos, que ao longo do tempo se tornaram brasileiros, não apenas pelo período de vivência no país, mas também por apresentar uma arte brasileira.

Com curadoria geral de Consuelo Cornelsen e Sergio Campos, e parcial de Carlos Warchavchik, a exposição é composta por 58 obras, sendo na maioria originais, e reúne nomes como Oscar Niemeyer, Gregori Warchavchik, Lasar Segall, John Graz, Flávio de Carvalho, Vilanova Artigas, Carlo Hauner, Geraldo de Barros, Giuseppe Scapinelli, Jean Gillon, Joaquim Tenreiro, Jorge Zalszupin, Lina Bo Bardi, Michel Arnout, Sergio Rodrigues, Zanine Caldas, Ernesto e Georgia Hauner, Paulo Mendes da Rocha e Carlos Motta, o motivo para o título da mostra ter o acréscimo “+1”.

“Poltrona Jangada” - estrutura em Jacarandá com estofado em couro, Jean Gillon

Motta ficou conhecido como o contemporâneo que se tornou moderno pela aplicação de madeiras recicladas, com marcenaria artesanal, como os modernos. Em seu trabalho, o designer e arquiteto, desenha para produzir em madeira de redescobrimento, reaproveitando materiais, o que não deixa de ser uma atitude moderna. Juntamente com estes trabalhos, a mostra representa a memória e história do início do design mobiliário brasileiro.

De acordo com a curadora Consuelo Cornelsen, a idéia da mostra surgiu de um projeto antigo de Consuelo com o arquiteto Paulo Milani e a designer Adriana Adam, que criaram em 1985 a Nucleon 8, que reeditava móveis criados por artistas, designers e arquitetos como Lasar Segall, Warchavchik, John Graz, Flávio de Carvalho, Lina Bo Bardi, Villanova Artigas e Paulo Mendes da Rocha. produzidas em uma coleção de 30 obras entre mobiliário e luminárias, mostrando os primeiros modernos brasileiros. A Nucleon 8 funcionou por três anos em São Paulo, inclusive com filial em Curitiba, mas o pouco entendimento do público sobre o design, levou o trio a fechar as portas. “Tudo certo, antes da hora!”, diz Consuelo sobre o projeto.

“O critério de seleção das obras da mostra “Os Modernos Brasileiros +1” foi o diferente, não expor o que todos já conhecem. A pesquisa total durou três meses, sendo que um mês inteiro, a seleção foi em São Paulo, visitando parentes dos artistas e colecionadores de arte”, explica a curadora. A seleção teve a ajuda de outros nomes como Carlos Warchavchik, que participa da curadoria parcial, já que escolheu as peças mais representativas da casa de seu avô Gregori Warchavchik.

e foram vistos somente na abertura da Casa Modernista em São Paulo.

Já as peças de Lasar Segall estão no museu que leva o mesmo nome em São Paulo, mas fazem parte do acervo, e não de exposição. A namoradeira, que é a peça mais importante, está na sala de Marcelo Monzani, um dos diretores do museu. Durante visita de Consuelo a Annick, filha de Michel Arnoult, as duas escolheram juntas as peças da casa de Annick, por exemplo, a mesa lateral, que nunca foi exposta.

Outra colaboração foi de Adélia Borges que indicou Graça Bueno, proprietária da Passado Composto, que contém um dos maiores acervos de Jean Gillon e Joaquim Tenreiro. Entre tantos móveis, Consuelo encontrou peças bastante representativas dos dois designers. E neste caminho percorrido, a curadora encontrou um grande amigo, Sergio Campos, da Artemobília, grande pesquisador e colecionador de obras de arte. Com ele, Consuelo, passou dias selecionando móveis em catálogos e revistas

Escape from the commonplace. This was the main criteria used in selecting the unabridged exhibit “The Brazilian Modernists + 1”. It presents works never before shown to the public, which were the basis of contemporary design, with an unedited content from modern designers and architects who, over time, have become Brazilians not only due to the period they have lived in the country, but also for having presented Brazilian art.

With Consuelo Cornelsen and Sergio Campos as overall curators, joined by partial curatorship of Carlos Warchavchik, the exhibition consists of 58 works, the majority of which originals, bringing together artists like Oscar Niemeyer, Gregori Warchavchik, Lasar Segall, John Graz, Flávio de Carvalho, Vilanova Artigas, Carlo Hauner, Geraldo de Barros, Giuseppe Scapinelli, Jean Gillon, Joaquim Tenreiro, Jorge Zalszupin, Lina Bo Bardi, Michel Arnout, Sergio Rodrigues, Zanine Caldas, Ernesto and Georgia Hauner, Paulo Mendes da Rocha, and Carlos Motta, the reason for the title of the exhibit to have the “+1”.

Motta became known as the contemporary who turned modern due to the application of recycled wood with handcrafted woodwork, same as the moderns. In his work, the designer and architect draws to create in rediscovered wood, reusing materials, which is after all a modern attitude. Together with these works, the exhibit also represents the memory and history of the beginning of Brazilian furniture design.

According to curator Consuelo Cornelsen, the idea for the exhibit came from one of Consuelo’s old projects with architect Paulo Milani and designer Adriana Adam, who in 1985 created Nucleon 8, which reedited furniture created by artists, designers and architects like Lasar Segall, Warchavchik, John Graz, Flávio de Carvalho, Lina Bo Bardi, Villanova Artigas and Paulo Mendes da Rocha. Sophisticated pieces were developed in a collection of 30 works ranging from furniture to lighting fixtures, showing the first Brazilian modernists. Nucleon 8 was active for three years in São Paulo, including a branch in Curitiba, but the public’s scarce understanding regarding design led the trio to close down. “Everything just right, but untimely!” says Consuelo about the project.

“Criteria for selecting the works for the exhibit “The Brazilian Modernists + 1” was the different, to not show what everybody already knew. The entire research procedure took three months; during one whole month, the selection was in São Paulo, visiting the artist’s kin and art collectors”, the curator explains. The selection process had help from others, like Carlos Warchavchik, who takes part in the partial curatorship, seeing as he selected the most representative pieces from his grandfather’s house, Gregori Warchavik.

Those objects from Warchavchik’s house, were useful for three generations, and were only seen at the opening of the Casa Modernista (Modernist House) in São Paulo.

Differently, the Lasar Segall pieces are in a museum in São Paulo that bears the same name, but are a part of the collection and not of the exhibition. The most important piece, the namoradeira (dating chair), is in the office of Marcelo Monzani, one of the museum´s directors. During Consuelo’s visit to Annick, Michel Arnoult’s daughter, the two of them chose the pieces from Anick’s house, for example, the side table, which had never been shown.

Another contribution came from Adélia Borges, who indicated Graça Bueno, proprietress of ‘Passado Composto’, which has one of the largest collections of Jean Gillon and Joaquim Tenreiro. Amongst so much furniture, Consuelo found very representative pieces from the two designers. During her ups and downs, ins and outs, the curator ran in to a great friend, Sergio Campos from Artemobília, a great researcher and collector of works of art. Together, they spent days selecting furniture in catalogs and magazines to then get in touch with the proprietors. Due to so much dedication, she invited Campos to be a curator with her.

The exhibition will be from the 23rd of September to the 28th of November, and is a complementary exhibit, which is essential to understand Brazilian Design, according to Adélia Borges, curator of the Brazilian Design Biennale, an event that will also be in Curitiba between the 14th of September and the 31st of October.

Design, inovação e sustentabilidade dão a tônica da terceira edição da Bienal Brasileira de Design que acontece em Curitiba até 31 de outubro e vai ocupar museus, universidades e parques da cidade.

Segundo a curadora, a jornalista mineira Adélia Borges, a ideia de ocupar diversos espaços é para fazer a iniciativa “extravasar” pela cidade, interagindo com o espaço urbano, com os moradores e visitantes. “Constatamos uma excelente repercussão ao projeto da Bienal, com o interesse de designers de outros países em conferir a nossa produção recente e ainda participar de uma ampla reflexão que pretendemos promover em seminários sobre o design sustentável”, revela.

Com repercussão internacional, a Bienal Brasileira de Design pretende refletir sobre como projetar, produzir e consumir bens, satisfazendo as demandas do mundo atual, sem comprometer o futuro do planeta.

Com programação variada, a Bienal Brasileira de Design deve receber 250 mil visitantes, das mais diversas áreas de atuação, e envolver cerca de 500 mil internautas que navegarão pelas exposições virtuais e poderão eleger o produto-destaque da Bienal 2010.

A Bienal é organizada pelo Centro de Design Paraná e pela Federação das Indústrias do Estado (FIEP), por meio do Centro Internacional de Inovação (C2i).

According to the curator, the Minas Gerais journalist Adélia Borges, the idea of occupying various premises is to have the initiative “overflowing” throughout the city, interacting with urban space, with dwellers and visitors. “We verified a fine repercussion to the biennale project through interest shown by designers from other countries, of using our recent production and also in participating in an ample meditation we intend to promote in sustainable design seminars,” she discloses.

With international repercussion, the Brazilian Design Biennale intends to meditate on how to design, produce and consume goods, satisfying the present global demands, without pledging the planets’ future.

With a diversified program, the Brazilian Design Biennale should receive 250 thousand visitors, from the most diversified operating areas, and draw in circa 500 thousand internauts, navigating through the virtual exhibitions and who will be able to elect the outstanding product of the 2010 Biennale.

The Biennale is organized by the Paraná Design Center and by the Federação das Indústrias do Estado (Fiep) (State’s Industrial Federation) through the International Innovation Center (C2i).

A Frieze Art Fair coloca Londres no páreo com Basileia e Miami no competitivo mundo das feiras de arte contemporânea

No mês de outubro, é a vez de Londres tornar-se o centro da arte contemporânea internacional durante a Frieze Art Fair, no Regent’s Park. A feira, que em 2010 estará em sua sétima edição, tornou-se rapidamente referência para as galerias e artistas de vanguarda e inclui apresentações de projetos exclusivamente produzidos para o evento, além de palestras com grandes nomes da arte e uma programação educacional para as crianças.

As 173 galerias selecionadas pelos curadores representam artistas vivos de grandes centros urbanos conhecidos por atrair talento, como Nova York, Los Angeles, Berlim, Paris e Antuérpia, e de novos polos artísticos que ganham importância no cenário internacional, como a América Latina e a Ásia. É esse balanço geográfico que faz com que a Frieze seja parada obrigatória na agenda de marchands, colecionadores, curadores, estudantes, aspirantes a artistas e amantes das artes em geral.

Durante quatro dias, o Regent’s Park recebe 60 mil visitantes em um espaço temporário criado especialmente para a feira, com luz natural e arquitetura também de vanguarda. Além dos estandes

das várias galerias, os visitantes são brindados com shows de música, dança e cinema, que levam a arte para outros formatos além da pintura, escultura, fotografia e instalações.

Uma das estrelas da programação da Frieze é a apresentação do artista ganhador do Prêmio Cartier, que dá oportunidade para novos talentos residentes fora do Reino Unido. O ganhador deste ano é o nipo-britânico Simon Fujiwara, que trabalha em Berlim e na Cidade do México e criou escavações arqueológicas para serem espalhadas pela feira, como se ali houvesse existido uma antiga civilização.

Artistas brasileiros estão em alta no mercado internacional e marcarão presença na Frieze através das galerias Casa Triângulo, Fortes Vilaça, Vermelho e Luisa Strina, de São Paulo, e A Gentil Carioca, do Rio. Mesmo quem não puder ir a Londres em outubro pode seguir os acontecimentos, bate-papos e eventos da Frieze através da internet. The Frieze art fair puts London in the same race with Basle and Miami in the competitive world of contemporary art fairs During the month of October, it is London’s turn to become the center of international contemporary art during the Frieze Art Fair, at Regent’s Park. The fair, which will celebrate its seventh edition in 2010, quickly became a reference for vanguard galleries and artists, and it includes presentations of projects exclusively prepared for the event, besides lectures with great names of the art world, and an educational program for children.

The 173 galleries selected by the curators represent living artists from large urban centers known to attract talents, like New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Paris and Antwerp, plus new artistic centers that are gaining importance in the international scenario, as Latin America and Asia. It is that geographic balance that makes Frieze a must stop in the agenda of marchands, collectors, curators, students, aspiring artists, and art lovers in general.

During four days, Regent’s Park receives 60 thousand visitors in temporary premises, especially set up for the fair, with natural lighting and vanguardist architecture. Besides the stands from the various galleries, the visitors are toasted with music shows, dancing and cinema, that take art to different formats other than painting, sculpture, photography and installations.

One of the Frieze program highlights is the presentation of the Cartier Prize winner, which provides the opportunity for new talents living outside the United Kingdom. This year’s winner is the Japanese-British artist Simon Fujiwara, who works in Berlin and Mexico City and created archeological diggings to be spread around the fair, in such a manner as to give the impression that there was once an old civilization within the premises.

Brazilian artists are on the up and up in the international market and will be present at Frieze, through galleries Casa Triângulo, Fortes Vilaça, Vermelho, and Luiz Strina, from São Paulo, and A Gentil Carioca, from Rio. Na Austrália

Foi com uma exposição de fotografias chamada de “Something More” (Algo Mais, em tradução livre) no Centro Australiano de Fotografia, de Sydney, que Tracey Moffatt emergiu das profundezas da arte contemporânea para fascinar o mundo, em 1989. Desde então, esta australiana de Brisbane, que trabalhou por 15 anos em Nova York e hoje vive em Sydney, ficou conhecida por suas fotomontagens provocativas, com alusão ao racismo e à vida cotidiana da Austrália atual e pela fusão de fotografia, cinema e artes-visuais.

Criticada por seu estilo livre e pouco apegado às normas que regem a produção artística, Tracey se justifica: “Tecnicamente, sou completamente estúpida. Mal sei usar uma câmera. Não estou

preocupada com a captura da realidade, mas sim com a criação por mim mesma”. Obcecada por arte, por fazer arte e pela arte no mundo, a fotógrafa-cineasta coloca em prática todas as ideias que surgem em sua cabeça. Para ela, não existe lógica na arte, motivo que a faz experimentar técnicas e criar obras sui generis, geralmente chocantes. Sua criatividade na construção e produção de imagens acabou levando-a para a sétima arte. Sua experimentação formal e estilística no cinema baseia-se na História da Arte, influenciada pela cultura popular, memórias e fantasias da infância.

20 Years ago, the world discovered Tracey Moffatt and Australia was given a new visual arts muse

Apesar de criticar os valores da sociedade australiana, Tracey é considerada um dos grandes expoentes da arte no país. Seus trabalhos estão expostos em diversos museus do planeta, como a Tate Modern, em Londres, o MoCA, de Los Angeles e a Galeria de Arte de New South Wales, na Austrália. Seus planos atuais incluem uma retrospectiva de sua obra para o Bronx Museum, de Nova York.

It was in a photograph exhibition called “Something More”, at the Australian Photography Center in Sidney, that Tracey Moffatt emerged in 1989 from the depth of contemporary art to fascinate the world. Since then, this Australian from Brisbane, who worked in New York for fifteen years and today lives in Sidney, became known for her provocative photo assemblies, with allusions to racism and to every day life in Australia today, as well as for the fusion of photography, cinema, and visual arts.

Criticized for her free style and not addicted to the norms that rule artistic production, Tracey justifies herself: “Technically, I am completely stupid. I hardly know how to use a camera. I’m not interested in capturing reality, however, I’m interested in my own creations”. Obsessed by art, by making art and for art in the world, the photographer-filmmaker puts into practice all the ideas that come to her mind. To her, there is no logic in art, that being the reason that makes her experiment techniques and create sui generis works, usually shockers. Her creativity in building and producing images ended up by leading her to the seventh art. Her formal and stylistic cinema experimentation is based on the history of art, influenced by popular culture, memories and childhood fantasies.

Passion for art, expressed in her films, guaranteed two indications in the Cannes Film Festival: one for the short “Night Cries – A Rural Tragedy”, in 1990, and the other for the feature “Bedevil”, in 1993. Following her experimental line, the narrative in her features and shorts is realistic and, most of the time, the paintings are used for scenarios.

Although she criticizes Australian society values, Tracey is recognizably one of her country´s art exponents. Her works are on exhibition in various museums around the world, as the Tate Modern in London, the MoCA in Los Angeles, and the New South Wales Art Gallery, in Australia. Her present plans include a retrospective of her work at the Bronx Museum, in New York.

Chelsea Entre galerias, ateliês, teatros e workshops, o distrito nova-iorquino de Chelsea é parada obrigatória para quem quer explorar novos mundos

O boom econômico da década de 1990 transformou a região do SoHo, no sul de Manhattan, em uma Meca do consumo e turismo. Lojas, restaurantes e hotéis migraram para a região que, até então, tinha aluguéis baratos e espaço para expansão. Com isso, as galerias de arte e os artistas que tinham ateliês nos lofts e galpões do bairro tiveram que buscar novas paradas. A escolha foi o Chelsea.

Demarcado livremente pelo Rio Hudson e pela 10ª avenida, é entre as ruas 14, ao sul e 29, ao norte, que se concentram as mais importantes galerias de arte de Nova York bem como outras menos conhecidas mas que, juntas, fomentam um dos mais criativos bairros dos EUA. Sua proximidade com o fashion Meatpacking District e o recém-inaugurado parque elevado do High Line, mais e mais pessoas passaram a explorar este canto da ilha, até então fora dos guias turísticos.

O ideal é conhecer o bairro com tempo, pelo menos durante uma tarde inteira. Dê preferência aos dias da semana, já que muitas delas fecham aos sábados e domingos. Almoce no Chelsea Market

e depois explore as galerias que achar mais interessantes, fazendo um zigue-zague pelas quadras que vão da rua 17 até a 27, entre a 10ª e a 11ª avenidas. É nessa zona que está o crème de la crème das galerias.

Vale notar que não são apenas artistas novos que as galerias gostam de expor. Nomes conhecidos como Roy Liechtenstein, Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami, Annie Leibovitz e Maurizio Cattelan são vistos com certa frequência nas paredes de Gagosian, Philips de Pury & Co e Gladstone Gallery.

Para quem não gosta das multidões e filas intermináveis do MoMA (Museum of Modern Art), um passeio pelo Chelsea é a melhor maneira de entrar em contato com a arte moderna e contemporânea. Após um vernissage, as galerias dificilmente ficam cheias e os funcionários estão sempre dispostos a contar um pouco sobre as peças em exposição.

The economic boom of the nineties transformed the SoHo district, in the south of Manhattan, into a consumer and tourism Meca. Stores, restaurants and hotels migrated to the area, which up until then had cheap rental and room for expansion. With this, the art galleries and the artists who had studios in the district’s lofts and garages had to find new lodgings. Their choice was Chelsea.

Freely bordered by the Hudson River and 10th avenue, between 14th Street to the south and 29th Street to the north, it concentrates the most important galleries in New York, as well as others not so well known. Together, they foment one of the most creative districts in the US. With the proximity of the fashionable Meat Packing District and the recently inaugurated High Line elevated park, more and more people began to explore this corner of the island, that up till then did not figure on the tourist maps.

Ideally, one should get to know the district with time to spare, at least a whole afternoon. Preferentially on weekdays, since many of the places close on Saturdays and Sundays. Have lunch at the Chelsea Market, and later on explore the galleries you find more interesting, zigzagging through the blocks that go from 17th up to 27th Street, between 10th and 11th avenues. It is in this area that you will find the crème de la crème of the galleries.

Worth mentioning is that the galleries do not only exhibit the new artists. Well known names, like artists Roy Liechtenstein, Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami, Annie Leibovitz and Maurizio Cattelan are quite frequently seen on the Gagosian, Philips de Pury & Co and Gladstone Gallery’s walls.

For those who do not like crowds and unending queues at the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art), a walk around Chelsea is the best way of coming into contact with modern and contemporary art. After a vernissage, galleries are rarely full and the employees are always willing to make a few comments regarding the pieces being exhibited.

Helsinki sempre esteve à frente do resto do mundo quando o assunto é design. O governo da Finlândia dá grande prioridade ao estudo do design e a primeira escola foi fundada em 1871.

Desde os anos 1930, Alvar Aalto, o mais célebre designer finlandês, já promovia o desenvolvimento de soluções urbanas sustentáveis através do design na arquitetura e urbanismo.

Por isso, não é de se surpreender que, na Finlândia, os ônibus, os postes de luz, as cabines telefônicas, as latas de lixo, os trens, os aeroportos, os edifícios públicos e até mesmo os bancos de praça sejam criados pelos mesmos nomes que desenham produtos do dia a dia como copos, talheres, mesas e cadeiras. Littala, Artek e Marimekko são empresas nacionais que buscam facilitar e embelezar a vida dos finlandeses.

O know-how do país em soluções urbanas simples e eficazes através de design atraente e sustentável atrai, há anos, estudantes e urbanistas dos quatro cantos do planeta. Helsinki, the Finnish capital, chosen as the World’s Design Capital 2012, has design in its DNA Helsinki has always been ahead of the world when the subject is design. The Finnish government prioritizes design studies, and the first school was grounded in 1871. Since the thirties, Alvar Aalto, the best known Finish designer, already promoted the development of urban sustainable solutions through design in architecture and urbanism.

Therefore, it is not at all surprising that, in Finland, the buses, lampposts, phone booths, trashcans, trains, airports, public buildings and even the benches in the park are created by the same names that design products for daily use such as glasses, cutlery, tables and chairs. Iittala, Artek e Marimekko are national companies that try to facilitate and beautify Finish lives.

The country’s know-how in simple and efficient urban solutions via attractive and sustainable design has for years attracted students and urbanites from the four corners of the globe. After the city was chosen to be the World Design Capital in 2012, the country is seeking to strengthen its role as an exporter of solutions that can be incorporated to the design and functions of large cities throughout the world, as well as the manner by which people relate to the urban universe.

With the greater part of the world’s population living in the cities, the importance of creating agile, useful, and sustainable ideas was the reason for developing the event entitled World Design Capital. Every two years, a city is elected to set an example for the others on how to find solutions based on design to improve their citizens’ lives. No Reino Unido A primeira obra do famoso arquiteto francês Jean Nouvel na Inglaterra é o pavilhão temporário da Serpentine Gallery, aberto entre julho e outubro de 2010. Seguindo os passos de Oscar Niemeyer, Zaha Hadid e Rem Koolhaas, que tiveram a chance de mostrar sua criatividade aos ingleses em outras edições do pavilhão, Nouvel criou uma rapsódia em vermelho, uma obra que contrasta com o verde do parque ao redor.

A Serpentine Gallery é uma das galerias de arte mais visitadas da Inglaterra e fica no meio do Kensington Gardens, em Londres. Ela atrai cerca de 800 mil visitantes a cada ano com uma programação eclética, focada em arte moderna e contemporânea.

In the United Kingdom

The first work in England of famous French architect Jean Nouvel is Serpentine Gallery´s temporary pavilion, open between July and October, 2010. Following the steps of Oscar Niemeyer, Zaha Hadid, and Rem Koolhaas, who had the chance of showing their creativity to the British in other editions of the pavilion, Nouvel created a rhapsody in red, a work that contrasts with the surrounding green of the park.

The Serpentine Gallery is one of the most visited galleries in England, and is in the middle of Kensington Gardens, in London. It attracts around 800 thousand visitors every year with an eclectic program, focused on modern and contemporary art. A fim de incentivar a disseminação da artes e cultura por todo o território francês, foi inaugurado, em maio de 2010, o Centre Pompidou-Metz, na região da Lorena, no nordeste da França. É a primeira filial do conceituado Centre Georges Pompidou, ou Beaubourg, de Paris, que abriga a maior coleção de arte moderna e contemporânea da Europa e recebe mais de 7 milhões de visitantes ao ano.

O espaço em Metz foi desenhado pelo arquiteto japonês Shigeru Ban e contrasta com o resto da cidade medieval. A construção é leve, moderna, orgânica e promete atrair visitantes e revitalizar a região. O novo museu não terá um acervo fixo. Todas as obras serão compartilhadas com o Beaubourg e ficarão em exposição por, no máximo, dois anos. In France

In order to incentive art and cultural dissemination over the entire French territory, in May 2010, the Centre Pompidou-Metz was inaugurated in Lorena, in the northeast of France. It is the first branch of the famous Centre Georges Pompidou, or Beaubourg, in Paris, which shelters the largest collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe and receives more than 7 million visitors per year.

The premises in Metz were designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, contrasting with the rest of the city, which is medieval. The construction is light, modern, organic and promises to attract visitors and revitalize the region. The new museum will not have a permanent collection.

All of the works will be shared with Beaubourg, and will be in exhibition for a maximum of two years. Therefore, the frequent Metz visitors can always see new works in the exhibition rooms. www.centrepompidou-metz.fr

Between September 25th and December 12th 2010, the Parque Ibirapuera Bienale Pavillion will host the 29th São Paulo Art Bienale. Reinventing the curator process, the 161 selected artists will not be representing countries, they will be representing different styles and thoughts. According to the group of curators, the complex migration and transit network that marks contemporary life no longer justifies embracing geographic zones.

The exhibit’s theme is the relationship between art and politics, bringing the visitors into contact with other ways of thinking and living in the world. Levar a arte para além das salas expositivas do Museu e fomentar um público com espírito crítico e capaz de refletir sobre a história e a produção cultural e artística de todos os tempos.

Foi com este objetivo que a equipe do departamento de Ação Educativa do Museu Oscar Niemeyer idealizou o projeto “Missão Artística Francesa – Uma interação Museu - Escola”, um desdobramento da exposição “A Missão Artística Francesa – Museu Nacional de Belas Artes (MNBA), que foi exibida no MON entre abril e agosto de 2007.

Para tanto, foram criadas cartilhas educativas, painéis com reproduções das imagens da exposição, material de apoio para professores e, nos meses de junho e julho deste ano, o projeto itinerou por 32 escolas: 3 particulares, 11 municipais e 18 estaduais em Curitiba, São José dos Pinhais, Fazenda Rio Grande, Campo Largo e Colombo.

O projeto levou ao conhecimento de milhares de alunos paranaenses a importância do grupo de artistas franceses que desembarcou no Rio de Janeiro em 1816, trazendo ao país, as referências artísticas europeias da época.

O Museu dentro da escola “Com o projeto criado pelo MON, podemos provocar mudanças no comportamento dos alunos, já que a escola é o ambiente propício para isso”, afirma Jussara Dinah Antunes Cherubini, professora de Artes da Escola Municipal Prefeito Omar Sabbag, uma das escolas participantes em Curitiba.

Mais de 900 alunos, de 5ª a 8ª séries, participaram do projeto na tradicional Escola Municipal Prefeito Omar Sabbag. “É muito interessante porque traz para a sala de aula um material diferenciado, despertando o interesse pela história e arte”, ressalta a professora de História Solange Cristina Machado. No dia do projeto, os alunos estavam atentos e interessados em conhecer a arquitetura neoclássica e suas heranças. A estudante Moline Dandara Barboza Ribeiro, 13, que já visitou duas vezes o MON, gostou de apreciar as esculturas e pinturas. “É uma grande oportunidade de aprendermos com o Museu vindo até a escola. A gente presta mais atenção com as imagens e a explicação do monitor”, garante.

Já para a aluna Evelyn Gabriela de Azevedo Santos, 12, o mais importante é o fato de muitos estudantes que nunca visitaram o MON poderem conhecer um pouco de suas exposições.

Como a Matemática é a matéria que mais gosta, Patrick de Paula, aluno da 6ª série, afirma ter um pouco de dificuldade para aprender História. “Com o projeto e a exposição aqui na minha escola, estou aprendendo com mais facilidade, além de entender melhor tudo o que aconteceu naquele período aqui no Brasil”. Para a estudante Kesia Portella, 12, a exposição provocou o gosto pela leitura, artes, vestes e adereços da época. “O modo como eles se vestiam chamou bastante minha atenção. Como não conheço o MON, agora tenho muita vontade de ir lá visitar as exposições”.

Uma exposição sobre o tema, composta por 320 trabalhos produzidos por estudantes das escolas participantes, encerrou no dia 26 de agosto o projeto “Missão Artística Francesa – Uma interação Museu Escola”.

A Ação Educativa do MON foi criada em 2003 com a proposta de abordar a essência das obras expostas, realizando uma releitura por meio de oficinas, cursos e capacitações com a intenção de contribuir com a identidade da cultura não só da sociedade curitibana, mas também da paranaense e brasileira. O departamento é responsável pelo contato entre a instituição e o público em geral. Com o objetivo de ultrapassar o conceito de simples atendimento ao público, a Ação Educativa prevê a participação ativa dos visitantes e concebe o Museu como um centro de formação aberto.

To carry art beyond the Museum’s exhibition rooms and foment the public with a critical spirit capable of thinking over history and the cultural and artistic production throughout the times. It was with this objective that the team from the Oscar Niemeyer Museum’s Educational Department conceived the “Missão Artística Francesa – Uma interação Museu - Escola (The French Artistic Mission – a School - Museum interaction”) project, a development of the “A Missão Artística Francesa” – Museu Nacional de Belas Artes (MNBA), exhibition shown at the MON between April and August 2007.

To this end, educational brochures, panels with reproductions of the exhibitions’ images, and supportive material for the teachers were developed. During the months of June and July this year, the project circulated in 32 schools, three of them private, 11 municipal and 18 state run, in Curitiba, São José dos Pinhais, Fazenda Rio Grande, Campo Largo and Colombo.

The project conveyed to thousands of Paranaense students the importance of the group of French artists who disembarked in Rio de Janeiro in 1816, bringing on the European artistic references of the time.

The Museum in the School “With this project developed by MON, we can provoke changes in the students´ behavior, since the school is the auspicious environment to do so”, says Jussara Dinah Antunes Cherubini Art teacher at the Escola Municipal Prefeito Omar Sabbag, one of the participant schools in Curitiba.

Over 900 students, from 5th to 8th grades, from the traditional Escola Municipal Prefeito Omar Sabbag took part in the project. “The project is extremely interesting, since it brings differentiated material to the classroom, arousing interest in History and Art”, Solange Cristina Machado the history teacher points out. Barboza Ribeiro, 13, who has already visited the MON on two occasions, liked to look at the sculptures and paintings. “It’s a great opportunity to learn when the museum comes to the school. We pay better attention to the images and the monitors´ explanations,” she guarantees. On the other hand, for student Evelyn Gabriela de Azevedo Santos, 12, most important is the fact that students who have never visited the MON get to know a little more about their exhibitions.

Seeing as Maths is the subject that Patrick de Paula, 6th grade student, likes most, he talks about having some problems learning History. “With this project and the exhibition here at school, I am learning with less difficulty, besides having a better understanding about everything that happened during that time in Brazil”. For student Kesia Portella, 12, the exhibition awoke a taste for reading about art, clothing and adornments of that period. “The way they dressed called my attention. As I do not know the MON, now I very much want to go there and see the exhibitions”.

“This is a moment of artistic plurality and enrichment. The more we promote art, the surer we are of generating an effective and active public for the Museum. This is the way to build up public, by sensitizing the child”, points out Educational Action Coordinator, Rosemeri Bittencourt Franceshi.

On August 26th, an exhibition covering the subject and composed by 320 works created by the students from the participant schools closed the “Missão Artística Francesa – Uma interação Museu Escola” project.

The MON Educational Action was developed in 2003. Its objective was broaching the essence of the exhibited works, undertaking a rereading through workshops and promoting courses and capacitation with the intention of contributing to the cultural identity not only of the Curitiba society, but also the Paranaense and Brazilian ones. The department is responsible for contact between the institution and the public. With the intention of surpassing simple public attendance, Educational Action plans on an active participation from the visitors and sees the Museum as an open formation center.

Emily Wardill no Appel Arts Centre

De Appel é um centro de arte contemporânea situado em Amsterdã. Serve como um espaço de exposição, publicação e discussões a respeito das artes visuais contemporâneas.

Além disso, oferece um curso intensivo, intitulado “The Curatorial Programme”, no qual um grupo de pessoas é treinado durante o período de oito meses para aperfeiçoar suas habilidades curatoriais.

A exposição “windows broken, break, broke together”, que será inaugurada no dia 18 de setembro nesse centro, está amparada em um contínuo diálogo entre Emily Wardill e o artista e curador adjunto da Whitechapel, Ian White. Ademais, consiste na mais ampla apresentação dos vídeos de Wardill até hoje.

“Sick Serena and Dregs and Wreck and Wreck”, inspirado pelo uso de paradigmas na teoria política contemporânea, remete a uma sociedade medieval majoritariamente analfabeta em que os vitrais eram um veículo de comunicação. Em geral o que se pode notar em suas obras são profundos questionamentos sobre a percepção, a produção de imagens e os mistérios e mecanismos da comunicação humana.

De Appel is a contemporary art center in Amsterdam. Used as a center for exhibitions, publishing and discussions related to contemporary visual art. Apart from that, it offers an intensive course entitled “The Curatorial Programme”, in which a group of people are trained during eight months to refine their curator expertise.

The exhibition “windows broken, break, broke together”, which will be inaugurated in that center on September 18th, is supported by a continuous dialogue between Emily Wardill and the adjunct artist and curator from Whitechapel, Ian White. Moreover, it consists in the most ample presentation of Wardill’s videos up to this day. “Sick Serena and Dregs and Wreck and Wreck”, inspired by the use of paradigms in the contemporary political theory, remit to a medieval society, the majority of which illiterate, in which stained glass depictions were a means of communication. In general, one can notice in his works the profound questioning regarding perception, the production of images, and the mysteries and mechanisms of human communication.

A exposição “Are You Ready for TV?” que estará no MACBA (Barcelona) a partir de novembro deste ano é uma ótima opção para os aficcionados pelos princípios da tecnologia. Em um momento em que twitter, facebook e outros meios de comunicação parecem

resumir o que Marshall Mcluhan previu em tantos de seus livros, a televisão ainda detém uma grande importância em nossa sociedade.

Assim, a exposição tem como fim investigar seu potencial visual, discursivo e formal ao contrastar três linguagens distintas: a dos artistas, dos filósofos e as geradas por esse próprio meio de comunicação.

Alguns dos artistas que participarão dessa exposição são Martha Rossler, Jean-Luc Godard, Anne Marie Miéville, Jeff Cornellis, David Lamelas, Guy Debord, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Richard Serra, Carlota Fay Schoolman, Chris Burden, Andy Warhol, entre otros.

Are You Ready for TV? at the MACBA

The exhibition “Are you Ready for TV?”, which will be at the MACBA (Barcelona) as of November this year, is a fine option for the aficionados of technological principles. At a moment when twitter, facebook and other means of communication seem to resume what Marshall Mcluhan forecasted in so many of his books, television still holds great importance in our society. Therefore, the exhibition has the objective of investigating its visual, discursive and formal potentiality by contrasting three distinct languages: the artists’, the philosophers’ and those generated by this specific means of communication. Some of the artists who will take part in this exhibition are Martha Rossler, Jean-Luc Godard, Anne Marie Miéville, Jeff Cornellis, David Lamelas, Guy Debord, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Richard Serra, Carlota Fay Schoolman, Chris Burden, and Andy Warhol, amongst others.

Marcel Broodthaers was one of the most influential artists of his generation.

Presently, 30 years after his death, his work continues to be as relevant as ever, and reference to his visual theories and the themes of his oeuvre can be found in the works of numerous contemporary artists. The Broodthaers films, in particular, that examines imagination and appearance as a means to misconstrue the cinematographic image, serve as an important starting point for films of contemporary artists.

The Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, that shares a space with the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, exhibits the works selected by renowned international artists, such as Tacita Dean, Cerith Wyn Evans, Olivier Foulon, Andreas Hofer, Henrik Olesen, Kirsten Pieroth, Stephen Prina, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, and Susanne Winterling, who were directly inspired by his oeuvre. Instead of establishing ample connections with specific motives, the works frequently act as homage to the artists while they update the ideas and issues that continue to make Broodthaers´ work a relevant matter today.

British Art Show 7 A “British Art Show” é reconhecida como uma das exibições mais ambiciosas e influentes de arte contemporânea. Acontece a cada cinco anos e percorre quatro cidades do Reino Unido. A sétima edição, curada por Lisa Le Feuvre e Tom Morton, será inaugurada em Nottingham no dia 23 de Outubro. Os 39 artistas foram selecionados a partir de sua significativa contribuição para a arte contemporânea nos últimos cinco anos. Todos os trabalhos selecionados foram produzidos a partir de 2005, contando também com trabalhos realizados especialmente para esta edição do British Art Show. Intitulada “In the Days of the Comet”, a exposição se aproveita do motivo do cometa para explorar e reunir um conjunto de preocupações que tecem seu caminho através da prática dos artistas selecionados. Nesse contexto, o cometa alude ao compasso do tempo, à recorrência histórica, e aos mundos paralelos. Contará com grandes nomes como Wolfgang Tillmans, Sarah Lucas, Alasdair Gray, Anja Kirschner & David Panos, Matthew Darbyshire, Luke Fowler, Elizabeth Price, Maaike Schoorel, The Otolith Group, entre outros.

British Art Show 7

The British art show is recognized as one of the most ambitious and influential contemporary art exhibitions. It takes place every five years and will cover four cities in the UK. The seventh edition with curator Lisa Le Feuvre and Tom Morton, will be inaugurated in Nottingham on October 23rd . The 39 artists were chosen due to their significant contribution towards contemporary art for the past five years. All of the selected works were created as from 2005, including the works that were specially produced for this edition of the British Art Show. Entitled “In the Days of the Comet”, the exhibition takes the opportunity of using the comet motif to explore and gather a series of concerns that wind their way through the selected artists´ practice. In this context, the comet refers to the time compass, to the historic recurrence, and to the parallel worlds.

It will count on great names, as Wolfgang Tillmans, Sarah Lucas, Alasdair Gray, Anja Kirschner & David Panos, Matthew Darbyshire, Luke Fowler, Elizabeth Price, Maaike Schoorel and The Otolith Group, amongst others.

Francis Alÿs no Wiels “Francis Alÿs: A Story of Deception” se iniciou em colaboração com a Tate Modern (Londres), onde foi curada por Mark Godfrey e Kerryn Greenberg, e The Museum of Modern Art (Nova York), curada por Klaus Biesenbach e Cara Starke. Francis Alÿs no Wiels

“Francis Alÿs: A Story of Deception” began in a partnership with Tate Modern (London), where curators were Mark Godfrey and Kerryn Greenberg, and The Museum of Modern Art (New York), where curators were Klaus Biesenbach and Cara Starke.

The retrospective will take on October, at Wiels (Brussels), and the curator will be its present director Dirk Snauwaert, presenting pictorial works next to new pieces never before shown in Belgium. Alÿs explores, via different poetic and allegoric approaches, political themes to daily problems. At least 18 films will be presented at the exhibition, documenting the artist’s actions, which vary between tragicomic failures and poetic observations. The exhibition title comes from a questioning of the being and the usefulness of acts and things, apart from the manner by which we observe and provide them with form. The artist has already presented some works in Latin America, including When Faith Moves Mountains, in 2002. That work involved the collaboration of 500 Peruvian students, who excavated a sand dune in Lima in order to dislodge it a few centimeters.

O Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia apresenta uma exposição dedicada a um dos principais nomes da cena alemã da década de 60 e 70: “Hans Meter Feldmann, Una Exposición de Arte”.

Curada por Helena Tatay, responsável pela curadoria da exposição de Hiroshi Sugimoto em Madrid e Lisboa, a exibição não tem a intenção de ser retrospectiva, mas alberga alguns dos principais trabalhos desde a década de 70 até os dias atuais de Feldmann.

O artista, por meio de séries de imagens, interroga os usos e significados que damos à fotografia, assim como às formas de arte que elaboramos na vida cotidiana, como no caso dos álbuns de fotos. Um trabalho marcado pelo interesse das experiências cotidianas que costumam chamar menos atenção, uma consciência crítica frente às estruturas onde se produz a experiência estética e uma ironia que suaviza sem esconder as questões morais. Por outro lado, a exposição dedicará uma atenção especial a seus livros, dos quais se inclui uma extensa recopilação. Estes não estarão apenas expostos em vitrines mas também em disposição ao público para serem manuseados.

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia presents an exhibition dedicated to one of the main names in the German scenario of the sixties and seventies: “Hans Meter Feldmann, Una Exposición de Arte”.

With curator Helena Tatay, responsible for the curatorship of the Hiroshi Sugimoto exhibition in Madrid and Lisbon, the exhibit does not intend to be a retrospective.

However, it provides room for some of the Feldmann’s main works since the seventies up to present days. Through a series of images, the artist questions the use and meanings we give to photography, as well as the art form we elaborate in every day life, as is the case of the photo albums. A work marked by the interest in daily experiences that usually call less attention, a critical conscience before the structures where aesthetic experiences are generated, and an irony that softens without hiding the moral issues. On the other hand, the exhibition will dedicate special attention to his books, of which there is an extensive compilation. These will not only be exhibited in glass windows but will also be at the public’s disposition to be leafed through.

As linhas retas. Os espaços vazios. O concreto armado. A harmonia das formas curvas e assimétricas. Tudo amplia as possibilidades de utilização dos espaços do Museu Oscar Niemeyer para a realização de exposições. Com 35 mil metros quadrados de área construída e quase 17 mil metros quadrados com potencial expositivo, o Museu também reserva diversas áreas para eventos.

A história do Museu começou em 2002, quando o prédio principal, projetado pelo arquiteto Oscar Niemeyer, na década de 60, deixou de ser sede de secretarias de Estado para se transformar em museu. O prédio, antes chamado de Edifício Presidente Humberto Castelo Branco, passou por adaptações e ganhou um novo anexo, conhecido como Olho, também projetado por Niemeyer e inspirado nas araucárias paranaenses.

A instituição possui nove salas de exposição, divididas em mais de 5 mil metros quadrados, além do Espaço Niemeyer, do Pátio das Esculturas, do Espaço Araucária, da Galeria Niemeyer e do Olho, que abriga o salão principal, com área expositiva de 1.708,14 m2, e a Torre da Fotografia (com 3 salas, cada uma com 84 m2). O museu oferece ainda aos seus visitantes um espaço para a arte-educação, um café e uma livraria.

De 2003 a setembro de 2010, o Museu realizou mais de 172 mostras nacionais, internacionais e itinerantes. A instituição recebeu 1.173.011 visitantes no mesmo período.

Espaços para eventos • Auditório (484,15 m2) Com capacidade para 372 pessoas sentadas, conta com toda a infraestrutura de audiovisual. A entrada é feita pelo piso térreo do prédio principal.

• Salão de Eventos (802,50 m2) Com capacidade para 500 pessoas sentadas, possui infraestrutura para montagem de bufê e cozinha em ambiente fechado. Como apoio, também pode ser utilizada a ampla área externa, adjacente ao salão, que tem as laterais abertas. O Salão de Eventos está localizado no piso térreo do prédio principal, imediatamente atrás da entrada do Museu, com acesso independente da área interna da instituição.

Be the Museum’s friend

The Oscar Niemeyer Museum is one of the most active museums of Latin America, an international reference. And, for the Museum to continue so energetic, the society must participate more effectively. With the “Be the Museum’s Friend” project, the Institution wants to attract people who are interested in participating in general assemblies, fiscal council, administration council, with the possibility of voting and being voted. To participate, contact the Núcleo de Documentaçăo e Referęncia of the Oscar Niemeyer Museum at 41 3350 4400. The annual rate is R$100,00 and it gives the right to choose three different catalogs published by the institution. You or your company can be a Museum’s friend. Participate!.

The straight lines, empty spaces, reinforced concrete and the harmony of curved and asymmetrical shapes. All that expands the possibilities of use of the Oscar Niemeyer Museum spaces for exhibitions. Counting on 35,000 square meters of built area and almost 17,000 square meters destined to exhibitions, the Museum also has several areas for events.

The Museum’s history goes back to 2002, when the main building, designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer in the 1960s, went from being the State headquarters to becoming a museum. The building, previously named Edifício Presidente Humberto Castelo Branco, went through refurbishments and gained an annex, known as the Eye, also designed by Niemeyer and inspired on the Parana Pines (Araucaria angustifolia).

The institution has nine exhibition rooms – spread throughout more than 5,000 square meters – besides the Niemeyer Room, the Sculptures Hall, the Araucaria Place, the Niemeyer Galery and the Eye, which houses the main hall and has an exhibition are of 1,708.14 m2, and the Photography Tower, counting on 3 rooms of 84m2 each. The Museum also offers to visitors an area for art/education, a café and a bookstore.

From 2003 to September 2010, the Museum performed more than 172 national, international and itinerant exhibitions. The institution received 1.173.011 visitors during that same period.

Areas for events:

Auditorium (484.15 m2) With capacity for 372 seated people, the auditorium counts on a comprehensive audio-visual infra-structure. The entrance is on the ground floor of the main building.

Events Hall (802.50 m2) With capacity for 500 seated people, this space has the necessary infra-structure for mounting a buffet and a kitchen in a closed room. As a support, the wide external area adjacent to the room with open sides may be used. The Events Hall is located on the ground floor of the main building, immediately behind the entrance of the Museum, with independent access from the internal area of the institution.
