EDITORIAL |

Dear Readers, When a legendary businessman Aristotle Onassis was asked once for a prescription for success, he answered briefly - „to know more than others.” In the age of Internet and other modern media, trade fairs are still the best way to compare offers of different suppliers in one place and time, to exchange opinions about the industry, they are also an opportunity to learn about new products, current trends in business and design. In this edition you will find a calendar of the most important trade fairs, as well as an information about trends for 2017 presented at these fairs. Along with changing needs of customers, fairs are also changing, both the largest one of global importance, as well as these which are leading in domestic markets. An example can be fairs in Poland. Taking place two times a year in Warsaw trade fair Interior Design Forum (www.interiordesignforum.pl) began to develop rapidly when it focused on specialization, becoming in their home market

the only trade fair of home textiles. New trade fair Home & Food (www.homeandfood.net) is the only industry event in Poland presenting foods together with products for its preparation and storage. This is a result of changing stores, which instead of same products, offer customers holistic concepts of their use. Also in stores with household goods appeared first culinary literature, culinary shows, cooking classes, and then also food. For example, near vessels to prepare spaghetti we will find package of noodles, few sauces to choose from and a cookbook. Observation of the best stores is the easiest way to recognize consumer trends. Example of the most innovative store - winner of the polish edition Global Innovation Awards you will get to know also in the pages of Ambiente International. Thomas Alva Edison - one of the greatest inventors of the world once said that „good fortune often happens when opportunity meets with preparation”. In the new year 2017, I wish you, above all, a lot of luck. Jerzy Osika Chief Editor

For joyful moments: cheerful, elegant, milky colours come face to face with a colourful mix of materials and patterns. In this world of fantasy, there is room for anything and everything that brings joy and makes people happy. The cheerful colour palette underlines the playful character of this eclectic collection of objects. Comicstrip, Manga and fairy-tale motifs and funky figures – surrealist prints take their place alongside lace, crochet work and embroidery. Iconic and stylised forms, coats of arms, emblems and traditional lucky symbols happily accompany traditional folk art.

For unmistakeable moments; natural shades and high-quality materials provide a framework for traditional craft techniques. This timeless style is indigenous and authentic, subtle and rustic. Long-lived products that are manufactured with dedication and commitment are celebrated. Master craftsmanship plays a central role as do traditional origins. And a suitable context is created by restrained colourways with natural shades of brown, quartz, gravel, greyblue, forest green, almond and biscuit.

Jasło Glassworks started its operations in 1922 with the production of glass tableware and glass packaging. The glassworks returned to this tradition about twenty years ago. For those relaxing moments: a style inspired by nature with muted colours, delicate materials and textures. This style takes its cue from nature and creates a relaxing oasis of well-being, peace and quiet: delicate, ethereal and atmospheric. The sensual atmosphere is developed in a series of muted colours. Luminous coral and gold create the accents amongst the interplay of soft linen, slate, mint, rose and lime.

TRENDS |

For stylish moments; powerful colours, geometric shapes and contrasts. Aesthetic and sophisticated. This formal trend lends the everyday a special elegance and splendour. Its inspiration can be found in classic modernism: from sculpture to kinetic art, from industrial design to architecture. Memorable proportions, expressive, compact, sculptured and monolithic forms dominate. The rich colour palette ranges from strong colours like lapis lazuli, malachite, copper, Carrara marble, onyx and gold to a powerful ruby.

Epic is probably the most overused word ever. It is slang for the awesome and the cool, the amazing and the sweet. Perhaps also for the epic fail, the badass, the crazy and the pwn. But most of all epic is about a fantastic experience and a good story. The epic is playful, it has a sense of humor and it is an important part of customer experience. Now let’s put things straight: customer experience is what makes the difference between winning and losing. Text and photos: MoOD, www.moodbrussels.com

Altruism and nearness provide a counter balance for the growing importance of technology and the self service trend online. The ethical way of living is the status symbol of today. Nearness is about finding products far away from what hypes on the internet. It re-becomes important to ‚know the guy’ who makes his own products and to have that smalltalk with the owner. Nearness is also about creations that are isolated from the buzzy places and to remain authentic. That is why Brick&Morter will revive. It will live side by side with the ubiquitous internet. The future will be about proximity again.

FLUKINESS Means: obtained by chance, uncertain, random, shifting. Think of fluky wind,‌ or the need to be lean. If artificial intelligence has its way, machines could interact with humans and change the way we work. Chat bots could exchange images and tell stories about new products. Assisted design will see the light and help upscale personal service, predict trends, styles and colours. But human designers will keep on making the difference when it comes to creating a style, a brand image or delivering services. Flukiness is inspired by artificial intelligence and algorithms. It is lean, loves change and embraces the new opportunities. Flukiness loves experiments with new techniques and new materials. It is influenced by the new colours that rise from technology.

Wanderlust, is searching for the extreme experience. From getting lost in the jungle to the hobo sleeping under the bridge. In fashion you’ l l recognize the influence of people who are willing to live far removed from all comforts for the mere sensation of it. Their spontaneity leads to a maximalist, eclectic style. This theme encompasses a large sense of freedom, that many of us can only dream of. Far removed from the boring middle class and the annoying routine. Wanderlust has a sense of humour and irony that is inseparable linked to private jokes shared amongst insiders.

Nordic S pa c e

Nordic Space, this spring’s trend theme at the interior design fair Formex, features an open mind free of anxiety. It includes rather than excludes and presents a stage for expressionism. Artistic influences are moving into our homes and craftsmanship is the new designer item. Text and photos: Formex, www.formex.se

The key words for the trend theme Nordic Space are; space, freethinking, sphere, endlessness and permissive. The expression is personal and experiments with tactile surfaces, patterns and various techniques. At the same time, the form is in many cases reduced and exquisite. “We see major interior design companies in many different exciting collaborations with famous design brands, but also with smaller craft studios, with the aim of finding a personal touch for their range of products. The desire for a unique expression allows considerable room for creativity but places high demands on materials, patterns and techniques in order to be able to manufacture the product,” explains Christina Olsson, Event Manager at Formex. Nordic Space consists of three trends: Monolith, reduced simplification and purity meets natural materials with archaic forms; Milk & Flowers, appealing volumes and innovation moves into our homes; and Astronautica, a graphically pure and luxurious theme where outer space meets marine influences. Colors: The color scheme continues to build on the fall’s blue and red line, which is watered down and now becomes a lot brighter with the addition of space gray nuances. The expression is clinical, fresh and sporty but also very warm. Material: Hard, solid materials with flowing, folded, perforated edges that create soft effects. Mirror glass, colored glass, stainless steel, plastic and colored concrete. 3D print and merging shades create an illusion of softness.

On March 8, 2017, in Warsaw will take place Home & Food - the fair in an innovative form.

In one place professionals from household and food sectors will find all products related to the culture of table, preparing meals and serving them – from ingredients of dishes, food and beverages, through dishes and kitchen equipment to tableware, glassware and table decorations. During the event, in addition to traditional exhibition, will be organized cooking shows and seminars. The event is addressed mainly to interior design shops, grocery stores, concept stors and HoReCa sector. Nowadays consumers expect from a store something more than just a specific product. They want to get an added value in the form of inspiration, advice, and even complete solutions. Following this trend, shops with household goods turn into so-called concept stors which expand the customer’s shopping experience with cooking shows, cooking classes and enrich the offer of additional products, for example cookbooks and groceries. A consumer can then buy in one place accessories for preparing dishes, ingredients needed for it and get a recipe, how to cook it. The same

applies to grocery stores, which enrich their assortment of cookware and dishware. For example, in stores with wines, we can buy glasses, and in stores with tea and coffee we can find also teapots, cups and mugs. Home&Food fair meets this trend of merging an assortment and transformation of traditional shops into places where concepts of lifestyle are „sold” and communities around lifestyle topics are created. Both household goods shops and grocery stores will find here plenty of inspiration on how to use the new consumer trends and how to expand its offer and services. On the fair will be presented new proposals of household appliances, tableware, products for serving dishes and for food storage, table decorations, kitchen equipment and an interesting range of groceries. Organizers warmly invite all industry professionals (shops, retail chains, HoReCa sector, interior decorators) to take part in the event.

Celebrat e Inspiration International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS)

Standing at the forefront of the furniture industry, the mission of International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS) is to celebrate design, invoke inspiration, and create conversations. Get ready to feast your eyes on the various showcases, thematic installations as we up the design quotient at IFFS and Nook Asia 2017.

The themes look at sources of inspiration, and how creating designs that are relevant to the trends of today connects inspiration to trade. The three themes are: Smart Living, Convivial and Design Forward. Smart Living is designing of furniture and spaces that go beyond aesthetics, to challenge the way we see furniture and how it enables people. With a deep understanding of the users, the environment and context, and meaningful incorporation of new technology, design can “think for the users” and empower them to live better. Convivial In the twilight of a society based on data, people increasingly place value on experiences, emotion and interaction. Convivial revolves around how the design of furniture and spaces can help people to fulfil their emotional needs by bringing them together and encouraging interaction and companionship. Design Forward Drawing from trends, design, and principles from outside of furniture and interior design, Design Forward examines sources of inspiration and how to use them as catalysts to drive new ideas and fresh perspectives to create design forward pieces. Register your attendance at www.IFFS.com.sg/Reg by 28 February 2017 to receive your FREE visitor pass as you gear to visit Asia’s premiere furniture and interiors show!

International Home+Housewares Show Derek Miller Vice President, Global Marketing International Housewares Association What new is proposed to IH+HS Chicago exhibitors and visitors? We introduced a lot of changes last year, including new branding for the Show, with theme It’s SMart, as well as some layout changes. For 2017, the Show’s concept, branding and layout will remain the same. Year-after-year, our objective is to provide the home and housewares industry an international marketplace where it’s easy and productive to conduct business – and to look for new ideas and inspiration. Of course, we’ll have a new program for the educational sessions, covering

timely topics that are seen important to the industry. And we’ll be looking to introduce new innovative, market-leading exhibitors again. Design remains a key focus, and the Discover Design Expo, located at the front of the North Hall, will continue to develop at the 2017 Show. And, with an increased emphasis on the smart home, the Show will feature the IHA Smart Home Pavilion showcasing a select number of new and innovative companies, brands and products. The IHA Smart Home Pavilion will be located in the Lakeside Center Lobby in the Hall of Global Innovation. Do you plan any events accompanying the fair? Along with the over 2,200 exhibitors, the Show will feature a full program of educational seminars, special displays and events designed to add value to attendees’ visit. The educational programs include the annual lunchtime color trend seminars on Monday and Tuesday by IHA’s Color Expert Lee Eiseman of Pantone and the Monday morning program on consumer purchasing trends by Tom Mirabile of Lifetime Brands. In addition, the Show’s Innovation Theater will offer 21 programs on topics including Internet of Things, design,

On Saturday, March 18, the Show will start with a New Exhibitor Preview reception for buyers and press. Open from 8:30 to 10:00 am, the Preview will feature 90 first-time exhibitors, representing most Show categories, displaying their new products. A special networking reception for all buyer attendees of the Show will be held on Monday evening, March 20. And, on Wednesday, March 22, we will again be organizing a Chicago Retail Tour – a U.S. retail overview and tour of Chicago retailers for international visitors who wish to know more about the retailers that thrive in the U.S. market. Additional details about all of the special events and the full educational program are available on our website at www.housewares.org/show/expos-experiences. How many visitors do you expect? Based on the very positive comments from the 2016 Show, we expect yet another successful Show year. At this point, five months from the Show, the current Show registrations are on track to again exceed 62.000 attendees. That said, especially the number of international buyers visiting the Show has been growing every year, so of course we’re hoping to see even more visitors in 2017.
