WIN DINNER AT CARMODY’S ANZAC DAY 100 YEARS TASTES OF ITALY MOTHER’S DAY
AT A GLANCE with the CEO
April and May are set to be a busy time for Southport Sharks with the start of the 2015 football season, plus renovations, special events and plenty of live entertainment. Southport Sharks’ commitment to the growth and success of our code has played a significant factor in the development of the Gold Coast SUNS. Our Patron Partnership is entering its seventh year and so far we have contributed almost $6 million since the licence bid in 2008. We wish them all the best for a successful 2015 season and hope you’ll join us by showing your support in the stands. I’d also like to take this opportunity to wish Southport Sharks every success for the NEAFL competition, which is due to start on April 11th. On the renovation front, we are excited to announce the major refurbishment of our football facilities are nearing completion at a cost of $385,000. Enhancements to meeting rooms, unisex facilities (due to the growth of women’s football), ice baths and other improvements are being undertaken to ensure our team can compete at the highest level in the NEAFL competition. Our restaurants are continuing to create exciting new dishes for special occasions and during May you have the chance to enjoy Italian cuisine within the Frenzy Food Court buffet. Carmody’s has added to its numerous accolades recently by being named ‘Best for Social Occasion’, ‘Best for Service’, ‘Best for Fine Dining’, ‘Top Rated Modern Australian’ and ‘Top 100’ in the Dimmi People’s Choice Awards for January. A special mention must go to Restaurant Manager Socky Soares, Sous Chef Nathan Hay and the entire Carmody’s team for their continued dedication to quality and excellent service. Stay tuned over the coming months for information on a new benefits program, which will offer great value for our members. We hope to see you at the club soon. Dean Bowtell

Pyjama Walk SUPPORTS KIDS IN FOSTER CARE
Too many foster children have been through enough in their life- they have been down the long road. Southport Sharks is proud to have been able to support the Gold Coast Long Road event as a sponsor. The aim of the annual Long Road walk is to raise funds for not-for-profit organisation The Pyjama Foundation, which empowers children in foster care with learning, life skills and confidence to change the direction of their life. On March 29 participants of the Long Walk wore onesies and pyjamas for a 10km walk along Main Beach, starting at Seaworld Drive; and Southport Sharks staff, along with Mr Sharky, were able to help provide support and shade with our water tent. “The Long Road is a very important event in our calendar and each and every year hundreds of people turn out to raise awareness, fundraise and contribute to the lives of kids in care,” says The Pyjama Foundation’s founder Bronwyn Sheehan.

“We’ve been able to make a positive change in the lives of thousands of foster children over the years, but it takes a community to raise a child and we need ongoing support from the community to continue our work – and continue placing more Pyjama Angels with children in need.” Thank you to our staff who donated their time on the day and all other community members who participated.
Did you know? There are more than
40,000
children in foster care. Statistics show, foster children are
4 YEARS BEHIND their peers academically.

Lest WE forget
ANZAC DAY Saturday 25th April
The First World War touched the lives of nearly every Australian and the impacts are still prevalent today. For these reasons it is essential to commemorate, remember, and learn from those who sacrificed their lives during those four years, 1914 – 1918. In 2015 we mark the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. Anzac Day, on April 25, is the day on which
we will remember not only the original ANZACs who served at Gallipoli and the Western Front, but all Australians who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of ANZAC, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.

Your tastebuds will thank you for it and you don’t even need to leave the Gold Coast. Enjoy excellent service and Italian dining at its very best during May at Frenzy Food Court for themed dining month, Tastes of Italy. The buffet will feature classic Italian dishes daily, with the various options on rotation. In addition to delicious items such as pizza, cannelloni, veal scallopini, braised octopus, tiramisu and panna cotta, you can still enjoy your usual buffet favourites. RUBY MONTEY ALTERNATIVE ACOUSTIC APRIL 12 & MAY 17 FROM 1PM CABANA BAR & LOUNGE FREE SHOW!
LOCAL RUBY MONTEY’S LIVE PERFORMANCES ARE A TESTAMENT TO HER TALENT, PASSION AND PURE GIFT. The 18-year-old grew up on the Gold Coast, spending most of her time playing guitar, singing and writing songs. She won the ACMF National Song-writing Competition in 2013 with her song ‘Animals’ and now has a number of beautifully composed originals on SoundCloud. “When I write a song it’s kind of like therapy for me,” she explains. “I’ll sit down with my guitar, play a couple of chords and sing whatever words that come into my mind and then I’ll read over and they’ll make sense and pinpoint exactly what’s in my heart.” The alternative, acoustic musician is influenced by the likes of Matt Corby, Lorde, Chet Faker and Vance Joy. Although Ruby is in the midst of preparing an EP, she continues to grow her exposure through gigs and busking, bringing a relaxed yet upbeat vibe to her shows and a distinct,
powerful voice. Her live performances truly express the passion she has for the art of music. “I started performing about four years ago. I love the vulnerability that I get to stand up and express with people each time I perform because when I’m sharing my music with audiences is when I am my most honest self and there’s no better feeling,” she says. “I love putting out a mysterious yet upbeat vibe when I perform.” It’s an exciting time for Ruby, who plans on moving to Manchester in 2016 to continue her music career, “The music scene over there is too wonderful to ignore, so that’s where I hope to find a band and pitch myself to record labels.” Watch Ruby perform live at 18-plus venue Cabana Bar & Lounge from 1pm on April 12 and May 17. Support local talent by coming along and relaxing into an afternoon of tapas, cocktails and inspirational tunes.
FULL HOUSE
Inspired by this unique sound, together Murph and Col extensively researched and created a show that captures the essence of the original musical experience, featuring all the biggest and best-loved hits of both Crowded House and Split Enz. After meticulous work in learning and reproducing the songs of Neil and Tim Finn, Col says;
ROCK BAND CROWDED HOUSE SET TO REFORM? WELL, NOT EXACTLY, BUT WE’VE GOT THE NEXT BEST THING FOR GOLD COASTERS SINCE THE ICONIC GROUP SPLIT IN 1996 RIGHT HERE AT SOUTHPORT SHARKS ON MAY 15.
“...it’s absolutely incredible writing. The [Finn] songs are full of texture, strange timings, amazing lyrics...yet they’re so catchy. It’s really interesting that such complexity can be so accessible. Wherever we play, we find that there’s an intensely deep respect for these songs among the fans.”
Tribute band Full House was formed in 2012 by vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Ben “Murph” Davies and Col Chapman. Murph attended the Crowded House Live Concert Farewell to The World in 1996 at Sydney Opera House and being just metres from the band, he recounts the experience:
Murph and Col will be joined by fellow Full House members, guitarist and vocalist Ben Denman and drummer Greg Newman, on the Sharks main stage. All the musicians are based on the Sunshine Coast, with the exception of Murph, who lives in Brisbane.
“...it was the most intense, heartfelt connection between band and audience I’ve ever experienced. There were more than 100,000 people but it felt like we were all in the living room together. Everyone knew all the words, everyone sang. Nobody wanted to go home.”
Full House have an intensely deep respect for the songs of Crowded House and Split Enz and you’ll see this on stage – they connect like you’re part of it and this make makes for a very special experience. Col says audiences can expect a lot of fun and great songs at the show.

Dance
Your Way to Wellness
You don’t have to have moves like Jagger to reap dancing’s health-enhancing benefits. Dancing is a unique form of exercise because it provides the heart-healthy benefits of an aerobic exercise while also allowing you to engage in a social activity. According to numerous studies, dancing regularly improves your circulation, increases lung capacity, helps with blood sugar control, burns calories and improves stamina. Dancing also improves balance, coordination and posture, plus as dancing raises endorphin levels it can help heal stress.
Best for Newbies: Line Dancing
The benefit of line dancing is that the rhythm is easy to follow, and the movements are repetitive, so you can catch on quickly. Join in on beginner/intermediate classes with Liz Collett’s Gold Coast Line Dancers at Southport Sharks on Wednesdays at 9.30am for only $8 per person.
Best for Burning Calories: Zumba & SH’BAM Check out the wildly popular Zumba and SH’BAM classes at Southport Sharks Health + Fitness and get into the fat burn zone by finding your inner groove. You won’t even now you are burning calories because you will be having too much fun!
Best for Stress Relief: DIY

On entry to Southport Sharks are two large aquariums with an array of incredible sharks and exotic fish species.
INTERESTING SHARK FACTS
Here are some facts about three different species of marine life that call the tanks home. Try spotting them the next time you visit the club!
1. N ot all sharks have to keep swimming to breathe; they can pump water over their gills, e.g. the Wobbegong and Epaulette sharks.
EPAULETTE SHARK This bottom dwelling shark, is commonly found on shallow coral reef flats, and can grow up to 1 metre in length. They have large black false eyespots in the shoulder area which look like epaulettes, hence their name. They eat crabs, worms, and shellfish and are mainly nocturnal. HIGHFIN BUTTERFLYFISH The Butterflyfish family is a very large group of fish that have a similar body shape and are typically yellow, white and black in colour. Many of them eat live corals and anemones. They have very small, pointed mouths, which they use to pick at the coral polyps. REEF SHARK The Reef Shark, no matter if Blacktip, Whitetip, Silvertip, Gray or Caribbean, play an extremely important role in the Earth’s ecosystem. Although they only grow to about 1.6 to 3 metres in length, these sharks are the apex predators on the very delicate coral reefs.

2. A shark’s skeleton is made completely of cartilage. 3. Sharks have up to 7 rows of teeth in their jaw at any one time. They continually replace the foremost teeth throughout their lives. 4. Of the 370 plus species of sharks, only 5 are considered dangerous to humans. They are the Great White, Tiger Shark, Bull Shark, Mako Shark and Hammerhead. 5. The majority of sharks eat fish or crustaceans and shellfish.

Football Report 2015 SEASON
Well by the time you read this ladies and gentleman, the season will be just about underway. This is exciting for all, as the pre-season component is behind us and we can all get on with enjoying the weekly cut and thrust of football. We start off against Brisbane Lions at Palm Beach Currumbin Salk Oval on the 11th April at 11.45am, followed by PBC V Broadbeach at 2pm, so should be a great day of football including the official opening of PBC’s new change rooms. We then head off to Darwin for the round 2 game on the 18th April against the always very strong Northern Territory side. A challenging start for our boys, however the team under new coach Nathan Bock have put in the hard yards, and all and sundry can’t wait for the opening bounce. Speaking of change rooms, our own facility including the coach boxes are undergoing a major refurbishment, which will see all new wet area including built in ice baths as well as new showers, toilets, kitchenette, lockers, massage room and offices, plus a spruced up gym facility. These facilities will be utilised by a whole cross section of the local sporting community including ladies, juniors and school teams. It is the first major refurbishment to the change rooms since 1989 when the football club relocated from Owen Park and will be a welcome addition to the Sharks football program. A big thank you goes out to our junior club who allowed us to share their change rooms while the senior change rooms were being completed. We would also like to welcome all the new playing additions to our football club as we had a good turnover of players in the off-season and their readiness to work in with the existing playing group has been a positive in terms of the group coming together. We wish all players, coaches, volunteers and support staff well for the upcoming season and congratulate all for committing to Sharks for season 2015. We are also looking forward to the mid-season premiership reunion (1975, 1985 and 2005), which will provide the opportunity for us to celebrate the club’s past premiership successes from 40, 30 and 10 years respectively, plus Wally Fankhauser’s input into the club as vice president who passed away in 1995. A dinner will be held on July 11 in the state-of-the-art Sharks Events Centre. It will be a wonderful time of reflection, in addition to providing some social aspect to our hectic season. For details please email b.kelly@southportsharks.com.au. Hope to see you at the football soon. Kind regards Jason Cotter Football Manager

Sharks See The Light Southport Sharks have once again taken their pre-season camp on the road, returning to the Byron Bay region. The team were brought together to run through the game plan, discuss their expectations of each other and set their goals as a club for the 2015 season. “With a new coaching staff and high profile recruits, the Sharks football management believed it was important to bring all the group together to ensure that we all had the same ideas and vision of success moving forward,” says Sharks NEAFL Development Manager Brent Kelly. Southport Sharks players received presentations from former Premiership Player, Hall of Fame Member and now club C.E.O, Dean Bowtell, before they were put through their paces. Training sessions were held at the Byron Bay Sports Complex and there were early morning runs up to the iconic Byron Bay Lighthouse.
Former Collingwood and Fremantle player, and now Sharks Assistant Coach, Jack Anthony had this to say about the camp: “We felt as coaching staff that the game plan we put together would sustain the playing group. The camp was an opportunity to galvanise the team whilst building culture and mateship. The boys took full advantage of their time together and we felt as coaches they welcomed the game plan and grew tighter as a team.” Whilst on the camp, Sharks coaching and support staff also found the time to address local football coaches, who were there to receive an AFL Level 1 Coaching Accreditation. Football Manager Jason Cotter, Senior Coach Nathan Bock, Assistant Coach Jack Anthony, and Strength and Conditioning Coach Jim Barrett all shared their knowledge and professionalism to ensure that the code continues to grow and prosper in regional areas.

Do you have aspirations to become a better footballer? That was the question the first participants involved with the Sharks Sports Development Program answered with a resounding “Yes!” The opportunity was extended to all Southport Sharks Junior Football Club players aged 12 to 17 years to register and secure their spot in the first ever Sharks Sports Development Testing Day during March. The footballers who had the top scores on the testing day went on to be coached and mentored by former Collingwood and Fremantle player Jack Anthony through an introductory four-week program aimed at maximising their sporting potential. “Throughout my AFL career I was fortunate to have played for two great clubs who, in their own right, achieved great success both on and off the field,” Jack says. “Early in my career I discovered I had a burning passion for helping others, especially in development and mentoring of athletes.” “In working closely with Southport Sharks Health + Fitness, I have designed a sports program that provides participants specialised training in areas of skill acquisition, sports education, fitness and nutrition as well as strength and conditioning, plus so much more.” The Sharks Sports Development Program’s main objective is to provide personalised training methods for aspiring young athletes living in the Gold Coast region.
