Welcome to the latest edition of Bite! The club has been buzzing over Winter and we hope you enjoyed some of the great entertainment on offer.

At a glance with the CEO

We had a tough football season with some incredible wins on our Fankhauser Reserve home grounds. We are exceptionally proud of debutant players Zak Saad, who has received positive media attention over the season, and Dyson Buderick who was recently nominated for the NEAFL Rising Star award. Well done Zak and Dyson! Also, a big thank you to Jarrod Field and Matthew Kennedy for their efforts throughout their first season as our Football Manager and Player & Admin Manager respectively. Here’s to a bigger and better 2017 season. As our football players now take a much earned break, the club is showing no signs of slowing down. Spring is always an eventful time of year! We have a trifecta of fantastic Melbourne Cup events that will be sure to see a great day out for everyone. Flick through pages 12-16 for more info on our exclusive Melbourne Cup offerings in selected areas around the club. Southport Sharks are proud to sponsor local community initiatives. This season we will be running two fundraisers in the stylish Cabana Bar & Lounge including Cocktails for a Cure, a breast cancer awareness afternoon, as well as our Movember Fundraiser. Both events are open to the public and more details can be found on page 5. On the outside of the club, progress on our hotel development is gaining momentum with construction due to commence in the coming months. This new development is a great opportunity for the club to attract different markets to Sharks Events Centre and the licenced club, and we appreciate your cooperation during the construction period. We will be taking every step to ensure that any disruption to the club, Events Centre and Fitness Centre will be minimised. We look forward to seeing you at the club soon. Dean Bowtell Chief Executive Officer

International Students Experience Aussie Culture at Southport Sharks

PAGE 4

With golden beaches and perfect weather nearly all year round, the Gold Coast is a wonderful place to visit and live. With exciting new study incentives and great learning opportunities, the Gold Coast is quickly becoming an education hub for international students. In 2014, Study Gold Coast, in collaboration with the City of Gold Coast launched an exciting new education initiative, proving to be a massive success. The Mayor’s International Students Ambassador Program not only showcases the Gold Coast as a premier location for high quality study opportunities, but also aims to build and strengthen relationships between the Gold Coast community and international students. This year, 14 international students from diverse backgrounds were selected to experience a host of adventures and engage with local government. Throughout the program, students were encouraged to share their personal and educational journey first-hand through social media platforms.

Being a part of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge precinct, Southport Sharks jumped on board with the initiative, inviting the students to experience some Aussie Rules Football culture in July. Hosted by CEO, Dean Bowtell, the students were given a tour of Southport Sharks and then took part in a football clinic on Fankhauser Reserve. Our official mascot Mr Sharky was in attendance with photo opportunities available for the media. Following the photo shoot, students soaked up more Aussie culture, enjoying a BBQ in Mackenzie’s Sports Bar beer garden, where they built their own burger, whilst watching an AFL game on the huge 5.25m2 screen. This wonderful program is a great way to to highlight the unique and varied learning opportunities on the Gold Coast and encourages international students to integrate into the local community. Southport Sharks were proud to be a part of the experience.

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! Sunday, September 4 Father’s Day gives us an opportunity to be grateful for the rock in our lives that is our dad. Wives and children have the chance to stop and shower this special father-figure with love and respect for the amazing job they do each day as a provider, protector, teacher and moral leader.

“Some SUPERHEROES don’t wear capes, they are called DAD”

Looking for a way to treat dad like the superhero he thinks he is? Look no further than Frenzy Food Court! We have a delicious gourmet breakkie & beer available from just $22.90 for members and $25.90 for guests. Each father dining will receive the choice of a glass of sparkling or glass of Peroni Leggera. Or you can spoil him with an allyou-can-eat buffet lunch or dinner from $34.90 (members), with each father also receiving a glass of sparkling or beer. Alternatively, you can give dad the gift of relaxation! There will be a Kids Disco from 5pm7pm on the main stage of the club. Let the kids boogie on down to LOL Crew while dad enjoys some beers at Frenzy or in Mackenzie’s Sports Bar!

KIDS CORNER: The key to any father’s heart is through his stomach, so grab the aprons and get the kids making dad his favourite flavoured cupcakes. Then the fun begins! You can try making the icing his football team’s colours; a superhero logo; a mini golf course; a “gone fishing” scene, a moustache or simply write a little personalised message.

Shark’s Dad of the Year Gary McDonald

If you’ve been a member of Southport Sharks over the years, chances are you’ve seen this friendly face around the club. Gary McDonald has worked at the club for over 17 years, originally beginning his time here as the Frenzy Food Court Restaurant Manager and then moving into the Duty Manager position after two years. When asked why he’s stuck around so long, Gary explains: “the staff are great and I have a lot of fun with them! We talk a lot of sport and stir each other about our favourite teams”. And it seems Gary’s passion for the club is genetic! He is the proud father of six amazing children, four of which, have worked at Sharks alongside him over the years. “Chanel currently works in Bars, Gaming and Cabana Bar & Lounge, having worked here about 2 years. Jackie has just left to do nursing at Pindara and had worked here for 4 years in TAB, Cabana, Gaming and Keno. Another daughter, Michelle, worked in Carmody’s for 2 years and my son Thomas, also worked in the bars for a while. That leaves just Cassandra and Eloise who have no Sharks experience - other than dining here of course!” Gary jokingly explains. Father’s Day with the McDonalds is always an exciting time due to their large family size “although the kids could spend more on presents!” and this year they intend to spend it all together at a special lunch somewhere – possibly at Carmody’s as he believes it’s “one of the best restaurants on the Coast.” He is also looking forward to the next big family bash, his youngest daughter Eloise’s 18th birthday in Melbourne, which he “reckon(s) will be another highlight.” As for dad jokes, “I leave them to my wife Jenny and the kids to tell” – somehow we’re sure that’s not true!

FATHER + SON TRADITION ALIVE at Southport Sharks

The 2016 season saw the debut of 16 year old Brayden Crossley with the Southport Sharks. Brayden is the son of Southport Sharks Hall of Fame member, Troy Crossley. Troy was a tough defender who played 95 games for the Sharks and was a member of the 1999 & 2000 Senior Premiership Teams. Troy played state football for Queensland, had a stint in the SANFL and went on to be a Premiership Coach at both junior and senior levels at Burleigh. Brayden made his debut for Southport in Round 17, at Fankhauser Reserve, against the Brisbane Lions. He was presented his playing jumper by Hall Of Fame member Shaun Stephens, who played in the 1999 & 2000 Premierships with his dad Troy.

PAGE 34

Brayden is a Key Forward / Ruckman, standing 199cms and weighing in at 98kgs. He is a Burleigh Junior who played a full season as the senior ruckman at only 15! Brayden represented the Queensland U18 side at the National Carnival this year, and has also played some NEAFL football with the Gold Coast SUNS reserve team. We would like to wish Brayden all the best with his football in 2017 as he certainly has the potential to be playing at AFL level in the not too distant future. Editorial by Southport Sharks General Manager – Football Operations Jarrod Field

Q&A WITH ZAK SAAD

Cousins, Zak and Adam Saad, have been playing footy together since they were just kids. Now living together on the Gold Coast, Zak plays for the Southport Sharks and Adam for the GC SUNS.

We have to get up and play the game we love almost every day of the week. So really, everything else we do is boring, or isn’t as fun, as playing footy.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU AND ADAM BEEN PLAYING AFL?

Z: We have been playing for as long as we can remember, probably since we were 6 or 7. We started off playing with cousins at local parks with jumpers as our footy goals and would play until the sun goes down and we could hardly see. HOW DID YOU END UP PLAYING FOR SOUTHPORT SHARKS AND ADAM GOLD COAST SUNS?

Z: I was lucky enough to be invited to play with Southport Sharks towards the end of last year (2015). Adam was recruited in the rookie draft at the end of 2014. DESCRIBE THE COMRADERY BETWEEN THE SOUTHPORT

HOW DOES THE PATRON PARTNERSHIP HELP FOSTER AFL ON THE GOLD COAST?

Z: It’s an inviting community that is growing by the day. As a result of the clubs and functions held by a respective club, AFL has now entered many homes. Two big clubs in the same city are bound to have a great effect, and in essence, they are having a positive impact. The respectable leaders and friendly staff of the clubs are leading the way to a pro-footy Gold Coast city.

SHARKS AND GOLD COAST SUNS

WHAT DO YOU LIKE DOING IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

Z: The clubs are quite close indeed, sometimes the relationship between the clubs can be seen as a senior and reserve relationship. The support of both clubs is quite obvious in practice, whenever SUNS need players, Sharks will give them the numbers needed.

Z: We both really enjoy watching the show called Suits. We also like to head to the beach when we can. When we first moved up, neither of us had any idea how to cook, which forced us to go out and eat. We slowly learnt a few good meals to cook, my favourite being garlic prawns. We have to get up and play the game we love almost every day of the week. So really, everything else we do is boring, or isn’t as fun, as playing footy. PAGE 35
