VALENTINE’S DAY WAITANGI DAY EASTER 2016 FOOTBALL FIXTURES
AT A GLANCE WITH THE CEO
I hope you all had a wonderful festive season and start to the year. Here at Southport Sharks the next couple of months are gearing up to be an exciting time, packed with events, sport and incredible specials. This February, you can enjoy the popular Waitangi Day celebrations with a New Zealand inspired buffet dinner on February 5 and 6, plus live entertainment. Our final Cash Quest draw is also on February 5 and we will be giving away $3,000 in cash at 9pm, so it’s not a night to be missed. Spoil your other half this Valentine’s Day by making a booking at Carmody’s to indulge in the three-course set menu, or enjoy a delicious seafood platter for 2 at Frenzy Food Court. There’s also St Patrick’s Day, Easter and Chinese New Year celebrations to look forward to. On the football front, our NEAFL side will soon take their pre-season preparations on the road, journeying to Casuarina to train and set goals for the new season. This will provide a great opportunity for the new recruits to gel with their team members. See page 29 to find out more about our new players. You can find the NEAFL and AFL fixtures within this edition of BITE, ready to tear out and stick on the fridge. The ultimate setting for any sports fan, Mackenzie’s Sports Bar is the official Gold Coast SUNS away game venue. The first Gold Coast SUNS away game is on April 2 against Fremantle. At the club’s Annual General Meeting, plans for the construction of a hotel were presented and we are happy to share our intention of building a 120 room hotel, plus a 200 space carpark. The additional car spaces will assist with the parking demand on our club precinct and construction is expected to begin this year. We are looking forward to a successful 2016 and hope the community will continue to show their support in the stands and in the club. Dean Bowtell Chief Executive Officer

SHARKS SUPPORT RESPITE CENTRE Montrose, one of Queensland’s oldest profit-for-purpose charities, has designed a unique short-stay Respite & Accommodation Centre at Labrador for people with a disability. Southport Sharks are sponsoring the Lounge fit-out for the centre, donating $4,200, which was raised from the Sharks Community Benefits Fund. This new six bedroom centre will offer comprehensive care, support services and also incorporate a two-bed family holiday respite apartment. This will enable families or small groups of friends to enjoy peace of mind as well as professional care, whilst they take time out with their families at one of Australia’s favourite beach holiday destinations. The centre is expected to open in May 2016. Montrose CEO Linda Apelt said the generous support of the community had made the new centre a reality. “When community organisations like Montrose come together with their supporters and sponsors, we can make an incredibly positive difference in the lives of the young Queenslanders and families we support,” she says. “Our goal is to inspire quality lives for the people we work with and this centre will do just that.” There are a number of ways you can get involved with Montrose, including volunteering, making a donation or becoming a sponsor. For more information, visit www.montrose.org.au or look for MontroseAU on Facebook.

THE
GOLDEN SHARK Meet our staff member of the year The Golden Shark is the most prestigious of Southport Sharks awards and staff members are selected against the criteria of honesty, teamwork, industry best practice, high performance and positive customer experience.
The Parkwood resident spends downtime with his wife Olivia and eight-year-old son Lachlan.
Nine staff nominees waited eagerly to find out who would win the coveted Golden Shark award for 2015 at the staff Christmas party.
With weddings to attend and holiday plans for this year, the Golden Shark prize of a $2,000 travel voucher is sure to come in handy.
“We’re a pretty sporty family and chilled out,” he says.
Bars team leader Daniel Morrissey, 36, was surprised to hear his name called out at the party on December 14. “I was a bit embarrassed, but proud at the same time,” he says. With 13 years’ experience in hospitality, Dan has worked at Sharks for eight years. He was first introduced to the club by a friend who was a manager, when he moved to the Gold Coast from Brisbane. “It’s a friendly crew and has a good family feel; everyone looks after each other,” he says. An aspect of his job, that Dan finds the most rewarding is developing the skills of the younger people he works with and seeing them go on to great things. You can normally find Dan working hard and wearing a friendly smile in the Lounge Bar, but he recommends members try all the venues at the club to make the most of their experience. Personally he enjoys special occasion dinners at Carmody’s with his family and trying the boutique beverages on offer at Cabana Bar & Lounge. “Venture out and try something new,” he says. “People sometimes pigeonhole us as a regular footy club, which we are far from.”
SILVER SHARKS Congratulations to all the department nominees: • Natasha White • John Riley • Adam King • Gina Davidson • Demi Minton-Connell • Neo Yu • Rennae Colquhoun • Adrianna Pin

“There is no remedy for love but to love more.”
- Henry David Thoreau
Love, it is the magical, four letter word that gets hearts racing and is the feeling that binds people together. Valentine’s Day, not just for couples but also an occasion considered by many to strengthen love and affection between family members, friends and neighbours. The great thing about this day is that it is not a holiday that exists in regulations, but within the heart, so you can give it whatever meaning you wish.
The Origins
Did you know?
There are various theories on the origin of Valentine’s Day, but the most popular dates back to the time of the Roman Empire during the reign of Claudius II, 270 A.D. Claudius didn’t want Roman men to marry during wartime. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret weddings. For this, Valentine was jailed and executed. While in jail he wrote a note to the jailor’s daughter signing it “from your Valentine”.
The saying “wearing your heart on your sleeve” is from the Middle Ages. During this time, knights would draw names of women to see who would be their “Valentine” and then wear the name pinned on their sleeve for a week.
Valentine’s Day Gift Guide Left your gift-buying a little late? Here are some simple solutions. For the new love: Don’t want to go too over the top? Champagne would usually be enough, but Mumm Champagne (only $49.99 for members) plus chocolate from Fins Cellar is the perfect combination. For a relaxed setting, order shared tapas at Cabana Bar & Lounge on February 14. For the young mum or dad: Book in for a romantic dinner and pay extra (Junior Sharks members price is $3.50 per hour) for the kids to have fun at Wobbygongs Kids Fun Zone. Wobbygongs allows parents to enjoy some adult time while their children enjoy the many activities on offer.
For the sporty type: Does your partner wish they could have expert help so they could reach their fitness goals quicker? Purchase personal training sessions for them or sporty merchandise at Southport Sharks Health + Fitness.

y t i p p o H y t i Hipp y a w e h t n o ’s Easter
It’s that time of year again. A time of joy, a time of religious reflection. Where sugar-infused kids come out to play and bunnies with eggs peak through every nook and cranny. Make the most of the Easter long weekend by hopping into Southport Sharks and enjoying delicious meals, fantastic service and free entertainment. There will be a special Easter themed kids disco from 5pm to 7pm on March 27, plus a visit from Mr Sharky. There will also be live music by Acoustic Soup on Easter Sunday from 7.30pm until 10.30pm.
DID YOU KNOW?
WHY EGGS?
The tallest chocolate Easter egg ever was made in Italy in 2011. It measured 10.39 metres in height and weighed 7,200 kg.
The exchange of eggs for Easter dates back to a springtime custom older than Easter itself in which eggs were given as a symbol of rebirth in many cultures.
A CONVERSATION STARTER: What part of the chocolate bunny do you eat first? Is it the ears?
10
Southport Sharks is closed on Good Friday.
5 DIY IDEAS That Don’t Require Actual Eggs
With public holidays and a long weekend in March, there’s more time for crafting, cooking and of course Easter egg hunting! While using vinegar-based dye or food colouring on eggs is always fun, there are many other egg shaped crafts you can keep busy with. Because who really has time to eat all those hard-boiled eggs anyway? EDIBLE GOODIES Need a sweet centrepiece for your Easter meal? From hot cross buns, to carrot cake, cupcakes and cookies, there are plenty of delicious options to create. EASTER EGG PIÑATAS Piñatas are a great craft project for kids and entertainment for the whole family. You can use balloons and paper maché to create mini eggshaped or chick piñatas. Fill up the piñata with chocolate eggs, or if you are trying to avoid sweets, confetti is a fun alternative. THE MOTHER OF ALL EASTER EGGS! (Dragons not included.) You can create colourful Easter eggs, which look similar to dragon eggs by simply using small Styrofoam eggs and pushpins in the colour of your choice. BOUQUET OF TULIPS IN WICKER BASKET A wicker basket need not only contain eggs this Easter. Bursting with beautiful tulips or the flowers of your choice (real or plastic), you can add some colour to your kitchen table, or any corner of the home.

COLDPLAY TRIBUTE BAND FEBRUARY 20 FROM 8.30PM SHARKS MAIN STAGE FREE SHOW!
Viva Coldplay Australia’s premier Coldplay tribute show comes to Sharks! Viva Coldplay has a passion for reproducing the influential live performances that Coldplay themselves are renowned worldwide for. The Melbourne tribute band formed in early 2014 and consists of Clint Sanders (vocals/keys/guitar), Nic Pallett (lead guitar/backing vocals), David Attard (bass/backing vocals) and Craig Jupp (drums/ backing vocals). “All of the band members have extensive experience in live performance in music, theatre and acting and have worked all over the country with some famous names, as well as abroad,” David says. David says people can expect the cream of Coldplay’s hits at their Southport Sharks show on February 20, plus a few obscure numbers to satisfy every fan. “We’ll be performing two 50 minute sets, plus encores, with songs from all seven albums that Coldplay have released,” he says. “Our shows are always very energetic and fun. We like to get people dancing, singing and jumping up and down. The songs that usually get most response would be Viva La Vida, Clocks, Yellow, Paradise and The Scientist. “The good thing about Coldplay is that their music caters for all ages. We’ve noticed that young and old get into the songs as they are very diverse and commercial.” The free live show starts from 8.30pm on Saturday, February 20.

Thursday, March 17. Steeped in history, Saint Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious celebration to mark the life of the most commonly-recognised patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick. The holiday’s popularity is global, and whether you are Irish or not, St. Patrick’s Day is a fun excuse to get dressed up in all green, celebrate Irish culture, drink green beer and try to catch a leprechaun If you are looking for a great place to party this St Patrick’s Day, Southport Sharks has drink specials, live music and Irish food offerings over the weekend and on the official day – Thursday, March 17.
A toast for St Patrick’s Day: “May the roof above us never fall in, and may we friends beneath it never fall out.”
According to Irish folklore, a person who catches a leprechaun may be able to convince him to reveal the location of his treasure.

Football Report 2016 SEASON
Pre-season is well underway and we will soon be able to watch our new recruits in action during the practice matches to be played in March. These games will all be played at Fankhauser Reserve on the following dates at 4pm: • Saturday, March 5 vs Brisbane Lions • Saturday, March 12 vs Gold Coast SUNS • Saturday, March 19 vs Redland Bombers The likes of former Southport Juniors Andrew Boston (SUNS) and Fraser Thurlow (Essendon), now with AFL experience, along with VFL star Evan Panozza, will all be turning out for the Sharks in 2016. With the retention of established stars Josh Hunt, Jack Anthony and Matt Sully, we are confident that our list will improve on last season’s six placed finish. Senior Coach Nathan Bock will be assisted by Southport Hall of Fame members Dane Carmody, Brett Thompson and Matt Kennedy, along with Josh Hunt and Jack Anthony in playing assistant roles. Significant changes have been made on and off the field as the club strives to reestablish itself as a contender. The 2016 fixture is quite favourable with only 5 interstate trips and only 1 game against an AFL side in the first 10 rounds. I would encourage all Gold Coast footy supporters to get behind the Sharks in 2016, attend our home games and watch us represent the Coast in the high standard NEAFL competition. We would also welcome any corporate support this season as we intend on performing well to give maximum exposure to our corporate partners. Good luck to our coaches, players and staff as we embark on our 2016 campaign; see you at the footy!

Meet Our
s t i u r c e New R There will be some new faces wearing the black V in 2016. Jarrod Field, General Manager – Football Operations, is excited about the club’s pre-season signings and says the changing of the guard points to a positive future. Among the teams’ new players are Andrew Boston, Ben Weightman, Rohan Heasley and Jarryd Drew.
ANDREW BOSTON (# 5) Age: 22 Position: Midfield First impressions of the club: It has changed a fair bit. It’s a very professional club. Boston has returned to his junior club – where he played more than 150 games before his stint at the Gold Coast SUNS. Originally taken with pick 55 in the 2013 rookie draft, Boston played 16 AFL games all up. He is hoping to find his passion for the game again while playing NEAFL and says his fitness is getting to the level he wants. He states: “We’re working hard towards winning the premiership, that’s the goal.” BEN WEIGHTMAN (# 10) Age: 25 Position: Forward/ Midfield First impressions of the club: I love it. There are awesome blokes and the facilities are great. Weightman joins Southport after moving to the Gold Coast to be closer to family and is enjoying the lifestyle change so far, saying it’s more relaxing. The former Aspley and Redland player was one of Kyneton Tigers’ standout players over the past two years, booting 140 goals and spearheading their return to Bendigo Football League finals. While he’s not on the field Weightman works as a plumber and is kept busy with three children.
EVAN PANOZZA (#17) Age: 28 Position: Key Defender First impressions of the club: Very large and professional organisation with good people in all the right places. Having grown up around the beaches in East Melbourne, Victoria, Evan was drawn to the weather and lifestyle that the Gold Coast has to offer. Having played 10 seasons in the VFL, with the last 4 as Captain for the Casey Scorpions, he is very excited to bring his skill and experience to Southport Sharks this season. Off-field, his passions range from surfing to reading and even cooking- ensuring he is always eating healthily so he is at the top of his game. JARRYD DREW (# 19) Age: 21 Position: Midfield First impressions of the club: Very welcoming. It’s exactly what I expected and a really good bunch of boys. Recruited from Warragul Football Club in country Victoria, Drew says he is grateful for the chance to compete in the NEAFL competition and is looking forward to enjoying the lifestyle change that comes with living on the Gold Coast. Even when he’s not playing for the Sharks, you are likely to find Drew on a field, as he runs football clinics for AFL Queensland.
