SHARKS SUPPORTS LOCAL ARTS & CRAFTS

While globalisation is still the key word in an increasingly homogenised world, the notion to support, showcase and nurture local highflyers has become a popular sub-culture in many communities. On the Gold Coast too, local talent is springing up everywhere and according to many artists and musicians, this once-upon-a-time niche market is quickly turning into a thriving and competitive industry. In conversation with a selection of local artists we learned why it is so important to support their work. Sean Scott, a leading Australian surf photographer and supplier of ocean art, says artists need to be original, find their own thing and do their best if they want to succeed. “We all share one thing; we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, which inspires us. Being able to capture a moment how I see it and share it with the world is a privilege and our local markets, events like Bleach Festival and venues like Southport Sharks that source local art to display in their facilities, all contribute to support this, he says. Often driven by the search for something different, local artists have the unique ability to contribute interesting ideas and concepts to their environment and subsequently the community. Owner operator of local furniture supplier Collaborative Wares, Natalie Harp, says that there is always a niche market for something new.

6

“We are living in a day where everything is sent or produced off shore, but the community wants a return of the old-school ways where things are produced at home. There are so many talented people here and I am seeing some very unique and individual creations. It is wonderful to see the great following and support from all walks of life from the people of the Gold Coast,” Harp says. Southport Sharks aims to create multiple spaces and events to showcase local talent, one of which is Styled. Featuring the latest trends of the Gold Coast art and fashion scene local musicians, artists and designers get the opportunity to present their work to the community. Weekly live music showcase Mack’s Sound Sessions further fosters the growth of up-and-coming musicians, and organiser James Diamond knows just how invaluable venue-based live music experience is for up-and-coming artists. “I remember my first time on stage I was so nervous I almost couldn’t stop my hands from shaking. Mack’s Sound Sessions is a move to get young musicians to turn into young performers who will win the audience every time, no fail,” he says. “The more live music makes itself heard and the more it is supported by the community, the better we can start to grow this culture of live music on the coast,” he continues. Supporting local is sustainable and means fostering your immediate economy, it links neighbours, creates jobs, fosters entrepreneurship and product diversity. Check out a selection of the Gold Coast’s local talent at Southport Sharks where you can view Sean Scott’s beautiful photography, Natalie Harp’s furniture creations and meet local artists at our Mack’s Sound Sessions and Styled events.

COFFEE FACTS:

CAPPUCCINO HAS BEEN RECOGNISED AS AUSTRALIA’S FAVOURITE COFFEE ETHIOPIAN FARMERS FIRST NOTICED THE EFFECTS OF COFFEE WHEN THEY SAW THEIR GOATS ‘DANCE’ AFTER EATING COFFEE BERRIES 29TH OF SEPTEMBER 2014 IS INTERNATIONAL COFFEE DAY!

10

First used by Ethiopian tribes, as what today would be deemed an energy snack, coffee has evolved into a much loved treat, or arguably a necessity, for an estimated 60 percent of the world’s population. Be it espresso, cappuccino, lattes or the much loved flat white in a mug – the dark brew is a staple and according to a recent survey, Queenslanders top the list of Australia’s coffee afficionados, with three quarters of respondents admitting to indulging in more than two cups a day. We savour Italian-inspired stovetop espressos just as much as the divine shot pulled from a La Marzocco machine; so ardent are we that at the faintest smell of burning dairy or the simple mention of fast-food drops, we draw a sharp breath of air. With most coffee lovers considering themselves connoisseurs and affectionately calling it anything from Kermit to Joe, trends like subscription coffee services, home brewing kits, de-caffeinated bed-time blends and personalised BYO on-the-go coffee mugs have become indispensable. At Southport Sharks we too succumb to the exquisite smell of coffee brewing in our café, and to offer you even more variety, we have recently released our brand new line of blends by Bun Coffee from Byron Bay. Take time-out, relax at our café and let our baristas surprise you with their creations, next time you are at Southport Sharks!

A Christmas in July‌

The traditional Christmas celebration undoubtedly has European heritage with its wintery feel, seductive aromas of roast turkey, glazed ham, steaming puddings and fragrant mulled wine. But, scorching temperatures reigning Australia during Christmas time often push these stodgy treats and other wintery favourites off the menu, making way for more refreshing options. Instead of missing out on much-loved Northern hemisphere customs altogether, stories suggest that a bunch of young Irish tourists took matters into their own hands one cold July in the 1980s and saved the traditional feast by creating a new Australian custom, a Christmas in July. Evolving from those humble beginnings in the Blue Mountains, Yuletide or Half Christmas is all about the food and not about the presents. Join us at Southport Sharks when we celebrate Christmas in July on the 26th and 27th with delicious treats added to our lunch and dinner buffet or try festive inspired cocktails at Cabana Bar & Lounge and revel in the fact that we get to have this celebration twice each year!

Telling Stories Through Folk

Having received airplay across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and as far away as Macedonia, The Lamplights will bring you an organic blend of folk, funk, roots, and blues with pop undertones, when they take on the Sharks stage on Friday 20th of June from 8.30pm live.

Fronted by the charismatic Ryan Gittoes, this energetic fivepiece band plays music with talent and integrity. “We are a contemporary, Australian acoustic band and our genre surfs through storytelling folk, upbeat blues, Gypsy jazz and reggae tracks - all delivered with a sincere intention to connect with our audience,” Gittoes says. With tangible chemistry and world-class musicianship, Jason McGregor, current Australian Fingerpicking Guitar Champion, Ashley Perrow on guitar and slide guitar, Mattie Barker on bass and harmonica and Mik Easterman on drums, lift the hearts and hopes of everyone who hears them. “We use our collective human experience and universal expression of emotions to draw upon as our inspiration,” Gittoes says. If you like heartfelt, soothing and warm sounding acoustic based music, this is the band for you.

16

DIRTY DUKES BOOGIE AT SHARKS A three-piece outfit bringing a premium blend of alt country, 60s, R ‘n’ B, boogie and blues and rock ‘n’ roll, the Dirty Dukes are a must see act! Fronted by Dave Fitz-Herbert on guitar and vocals, the band also features Sean O’Shea on bass and vocals and Shaun Guthrie on drums. “Three friends tired of not being able to find good live music, we decided to form a band – we thought we could do better than what was out there,” Fitz-Herbert says. Having worked as a band for many years now, it is evident as soon as the first chord is struck that the listener is going to be introduced to something special. “We’re a good-time band and want to get the audience to be happy and have a dance - so relax, kick back and enjoy the show,” Fitz-Herbert says. With influences including John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Winter, CCR, ZZ Top, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Taj Mahal, Muddy Waters and more, the Dirty Dukes bring you boogie and blues with a bit of classic rock ‘n’ roll. Catch the Dirty Dukes live on Friday 11th July from 8.30pm at Sharks!

Ann-Maree’s Recipe for Success

The search for success and a foolproof recipe for achieving it has long been the quest of society. Some say happiness rather than simply working hard is the key; others suggest honesty and motivation are important traits - but is there a universally winning formula? At Southport Sharks our team is diverse, hailing from all around the world and bringing to the mix a range of different talents and aspirations. In conversation with our Human Resources Manager Ann-Maree, we learnt more about her recipe for success and how she leads our team to strive towards being exceptional. Ann-Maree started her career as a teacher and after five years took an extended holiday that saw her travel to Western Australia and abroad to Europe. Little did she know that this would change her life and lead her on a career path from teaching to hospitality, her own consulting business and eventually to human resources at Southport Sharks. “My recipe for success is to ensure you have a mixture of the right ingredients. You have to have the drive to aspire to be and do better. You also have to enjoy what you do, be challenged and rewarded and relish your environment by finding a balance between work and personal life,” she says. “I love my job, the fast paced environment it provides and seeing people succeed. But, I also enjoy peaceful activities such as making soy candles or paddling on Currumbin Creek on a perfect Gold Coast morning.” We live in something comparable to a microwave society, where most people expect to get what they want in an instant, but much rather than coming to you, success is up to you. “I have spent over 30 years specialising in the people business and during this time I discovered that most of us fail to recognise our own brilliance,” she says. When it comes to reward and recognition, Ann-Maree says this is the icing on the cake and one of the most important ingredients to ensure continued success. “At Southport Sharks we strive to see our team members succeed in each of their individual tasks and we make a point of acknowledging their efforts and achievements through our reward programs. I realise that, as Walt Disney once said, “You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make it a reality”.

22

Maybe success then is not merely an aspiration, and could simply be put down to four simple ingredients: determination, balance, happiness and reward?

Southport Sharks Values - PERFORM OUR BEST - WORK AS A TEAM - BE HONEST - DELIVER RESULTS - PROVIDE A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE

At this unique black tie event, guests will be treated to a decadent three course dinner prepared by the chefs from Carmody’s Restaurant, four hour beverage package, auctions, raffles and entertainment including Australian music legend Daryl Braithwaite.

FOOTY UPDATE The season is in full swing and at the time of writing the Sharks are travelling well understanding that Sydney Swans and Greater West Sydney reserve grade teams along with the Northern Territory Thunder and Redlands who have defeated us have all got off to very good starts. Coach Matthew Angus and his band of assistants, including the strength and conditioning team, are certainly leaving no stone unturned in terms of their weekly processes and this certainly argues well for a finals campaign. Coupled with this the club has the added positive of culture and leadership gurus Trevor Hendy and Errol Amerasekera to reinforce their behaviours on and off the field which is giving the group a much more rounded approach. This all being said nobody at the club is underestimating the competition and we all understand we need to keep improving as a collective as the competition pleasingly has risen to another level. Hope to see you at the football soon. Kind Regards Jason Cotter Football Manager
