FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS, THE GIVE ME 5 FOR KIDS INITIATIVE HAS ENCOURAGED LOCAL BUSINESSES TO DONATE A PORTION OF THEIR JUNE PROFITS TO A VERY WORTHY CAUSE. 2014 WAS NO DIFFERENT WITH A LARGE NUMBER OF LOCAL COMPANIES ROLLING UP THEIR SLEEVES FOR KIDS- AND RAISING A TOTAL OF $215,000! A fantastic charity, Give Me 5 for Kids raises much needed funds for children’s wards in our local hospitals. The money raised is used to purchase vital equipment; ensuring kids receive the best possible care while in hospital. Over the years millions of dollars have been raised nationally, to pay for invaluable medical equipment and provide support for families with sick children in our community. On Tuesday 10th June, Southport Sharks announced that from every coffee sold throughout the day, $1 was to be donated to Give Me 5 for Kids. Thanks to our regular coffee lovers and those who simply went out of their way to purchase a cuppa for a worthy cause, Southport Sharks was able to help contribute to this worthy cause.

CELEBRATING DAD’S DAY It’s a day dedicated to celebrating all fathers and father figures as well as reflecting on what they contribute to their families and the community at large! But, where did the festivity originate? Some stories suggest that Father’s Day came from the pagan worship of the sun, others hint that it was created to complement Mother’s Day, but most theories acknowledge that it was first celebrated in the USA, where Sonora Dodd, daughter of American Civil War veteran William Smart, wanted to honour her widowed father for his self-sacrifice and the love he gave his children. Regardless of its origin, the first Sunday in September (Australia) is devoted to spoiling our father figures and at Sharks we have plenty activities that will have you and your dad covered on the day! Make the most of this celebration and start the day right at Frenzy Food Court with our gourmet breakfast. If he’s into sport invite him to catch a game of footy at one of the local home grounds, or kick back and watch all the live action on the big screens at Mack’s Bar. For the musically inclined we also have live entertainment 7 nights a week... and if you’re looking for that last minute gift idea, between our awesome range of merchandise, apparel and beverage specials at Fins, believe us, there’s something for every Dad! Read on to find out how our members are celebrating this special day.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT FATHER’S DAY?
Majorie - It’s a lovely thing, especially for the children to make their memories and to spend time with their father.
Tami - I see Father’s Day as an opportunity to spend time with dad. When we are together he treats me like a princess. I wish he lived here not in Perth.
Denise - My father is always there when I need him. I like Father’s Day because it’s a time when I can let him know how we feel about him without him getting embarrassed.
Luke - I don’t live at home, so on Father’s Day I get to spend time with my dad and parents in general which is great.
DID YOU KNOW?
• The rose is the official Father’s Day flower • Unlike in most other countries, in Australia Father’s Day is celebrated in September • In Thailand the King’s birthday also serves as national Father’s Day • Father’s Day originated in America and was first celebrated on 19th June 1910 • It’s believed that the word Dad dates back to as early as the 16th century

It’s fascinating to ponder the fact that the world’s most consumed beverage dates back to sometime around the 5th Millennium BC. In fact the first product humans made from grain and water, before even coming up with the humble loaf of bread, was beer. Evolving from yeast-less beginnings to more sophisticated brews, the industry has recently taken another turn with the rise of craft beer empires quenching the thirst of beer loving Australians. Born from a desire to return to the roots of this legendary tipple, boutique or micro-brews first surfaced as small scale outfits in the 70s, embracing traditional ideologies behind making the nectar of the gods. Craft beers were to be made in single batches, using exclusively premium ingredients. Originating with Matilda Bay, the matriarch of Australian craft beer brewing, the renaissance of this boutique industry is now propelled by myriad smaller and entrepreneur type companies, featuring anything from no-carb to bacon flavoured blends. To get your very own craft beer fix ask our bar staff next time you’re at Sharks, or try Executive Sous Chef Andrew Dugard’s favourite beer bread recipe. It works perfectly with steaming winter soups and stews!

DEVIL’S KIOSK Like a Phoenix from the flames, Devil’s Kiosk evolved from respected Australian blues band Blind Lemon. Since winning the ‘People’s Choice Award’ at the Blues Association of South East Queensland’s 2012 ‘Memphis Blues Challenge’, Devil’s Kiosk have gone on to wow fans at festivals across Australia. Their tunes encompass classic harp and guitar sounds, derived from elements of 40s and 50s blues masters, as well as the soulful feel of 60s and 70s British blues and the virtuosic magic of more contemporary artists. Showcasing original songs with an ever-present blues foundation and a darker edge, their sound covers all the drama and energy that is so evident in their live performance. Devil’s Kiosk conjures up images of temptation and hedonism, blues music deep from the soul that drives us and fuels our emotions. With lead man Jamie Symons, Harvey on guitar and drummer Toby, this band will bring you the finest blues tunes you’ve heard in a long time!
COME ALONG AND SEE THEM LIVE ON FRIDAY 29TH AUGUST FROM 8.30PM AT SOUTHPORT SHARKS. 16
Let Your Hair Down
THE HODADS ARE COMING TO TOWN
Hodads is a 50s term for someone who hung out at the beach, but definitely wasn’t a surfer – someone who was into cars, music and embodied a type of counterculture style. With crowd pleasers such as Kings of Leon, Bob Marley and U2 in their huge repertoire, The Hodads have been performing great live shows since 1996 – and they’re definitely into music like their name suggests. The band is fronted by Mike on vocals and electric and bass guitar. His professional career began in Newcastle in the early 90s gigging with numerous bands including the extremely successful Caustic Cowboys. His powerful vocals, charisma and ability to captivate an audience ensure all who see him will want to come back for a second dose. Mike is backed by Rob on vocals, bass, electric, acoustic and flamenco guitar, Wayne on vocals, bass, acoustic and electric guitar and drums and Greg on vocals, drums and percussions. With their dynamic performances and huge selection of songs they’re known for keeping even the toughest critic entertained.
WITNESS THIS AWESOME BAND, WHEN THEY TAKE ON THE SHARKS STAGE ON SATURDAY 27TH SEPT FROM 8.30PM LIVE. 17

With the recent introduction of our brand new line of coffee blends, we wanted to take this opportunity to introduce you to Bun Coffee owner and master roaster David Kennedy. David has worked in the hospitality industry for over 25 years and went from owning his own café in Sydney to shipping his first roaster from Turkey to Byron Bay in 2004. Since then Bun Coffee has won multiple awards and continuously grows its fantastic product range. Read more below:
What is your favourite thing about working with coffee? My passion for coffee can be summed up with two words, freshness and flavour. I hate drinking bad coffee, especially when with the right attention and care it can be so good. I also love the creativity. Experimenting with blends and different flavours to find the right combination is magic. Transforming something that has been grown in a far off place into something customers will enjoy here, is also part of the appeal. What makes a really great coffee? First you need high quality coffee beans. Arabica is the superior bean and most of our blends are 100% Arabica. Secondly well maintained and clean equipment is essential and finally, and perhaps most importantly, a good barista is key. Where are your beans sourced from? Bun Coffee’s coffee beans come from around the world, as well as within Australia. Typically we source beans from the likes of Colombia, Nicaragua, Bolivia, PNG, Kenya, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico and Honduras. We currently have over 35 coffees from 27 different countries. What are the three most important things people should know about coffee? People often don’t realise how important it is to keep coffee away from light, moisture and air, as well as maintaining a clean coffee maker or coffee machine for optimum flavor. Also, many people don’t realise just how important it is to support sustainable coffee farming practices, not just for the taste but for the implications it has for the coffee workers and the future of the industry. Don’t forget to try Bun Coffee’s range of coffee blends at our café next time you visit Sharks!

Football Report We have had some challenges in the mid-season; however the positives have been many with the coaches and playing group coming together. We did unfortunately have a season-ending injury to Mitch Brewer, taking our season ending injuries to three at the time of writing, with Glenn Screech and Haydn Kiel being the others. The positive is that all have had their respective surgeries performed and are already on the road to recovery via their rehabilitations. The Sharks have always prided themselves on making sure should injury occur that the respective players are looked after in a fashion to assist the optimal recovery for the individual. With the competition heading in the right direction in terms of standard and I am sure that the four AFL teams that compete within the competition have noticed a lift in standard, this can only assist to fast track their young listed players. It’s also an opportunity for young players within the Gold Coast/ Northern NSW region to test themselves against some of the country’s best up and coming talent by firstly making the Sharks NEAFL list of 35 and then performing well against the weekly opposition. The coaching staff have seen some wonderful improvements in our playing group, which has an average age of around 22 years and have commented that there is plenty of upside to come out of the playing group, which argues well for the future performance of the team. Off-field the Presidents Lunches and Ladies High Tea functions at home games have been a tremendous adjunct to bring the local community together and raising support for the Sharks as the only community standalone NEAFL team from the Gold Coast Region. We look forward to the continued growth of our players and coaches on and off the field as the season progresses. Hope to see you all at the football soon! Kind Regards Jason Cotter Football Manager

SHARKS ACTIVE WITHIN THE
Southport Sharks has continued its work within the football community this season, with several programs and initiatives being frequented by our players and coaches. It began in February when the Sharks took their pre-season camp to Byron Bay, where they involved talented local junior players and coaches in their preparation for the long season ahead. The Sharks coaching staff opened the inner sanctum of the club to aspiring Level 1 coaches on game day. Here they shared their match day environment and continued to educate the next wave of senior and junior coaches. They also travelled to Northern NSW, by invitation, and were asked to present at Level 1 courses to assist their southern cousins in best practice coaching methods. Even the players gave their time and put back into the community that supports them by sharing their football knowledge with the next generation of NEAFL & AFL Stars by visiting local junior clubs at Pacific Pines & Southport Sharks Juniors. In order to support those QAFL Clubs who continue to work with Southport, a home game versus the Brisbane Lions was taken to the home of the Broadbeach Cats in an attempt to assist with the Cats game day revenue and to strengthen ties with other local senior football clubs. The Sharks have not only donated their time, but have also assisted financially with various programs across the Gold Coast, which ensure the development and growth of the game. Southport played a vital role in ensuring it was possible for PBC High School to travel to Victoria to participate in the Victorian Premier League and have also contributed towards the first QLD Inclusion team competing at the National Championships in Melbourne in June. “All of these programs and initiatives are important to the growth and development of our great game here on the Gold Coast,” says Brent Kelly, NEAFL Operations Manager at Southport Sharks. “And, whether it is time or financial assistance that we provide, our players, coaches and support staff will continue to support the football community that has supported us for so long.”
