CHRISTMAS FAMILY NIGHT NEW YEAR’S EVE AUSTRALIA DAY
AT A GLANCE WITH THE CEO
As this year comes to a close and we move into 2016, we invite you to join us at Southport Sharks for a summer filled with fun, festive celebrations and entertainment. The Christmas themed dinner buffet running for all of December in Frenzy Food Court is a sure fired treat and our muchanticipated, annual Christmas Family Night will be held on December 20. We also have three New Year’s Eve events, our Cash Quest promotion where we are giving away over $20,000 in cash and Australia Day celebrations to look forward to over the next couple of months. All the details for these events and more are inside this edition of BITE. We recently welcomed Jarrod Field to the club as our new General Manager- Football Operations. Originally from Vermont in Melbourne’s Eastern League, Jarrod has had stints as underage coach and football manager at Broadbeach and senior coach and football manager with Labrador. The club is confident Jarrod’s management skills will provide significant value to Sharks as we look to premiership success in 2016. One important and exciting announcement is that our trading hours will be extended from December 2, to provide greater flexibility for members and guests. The main club will be open until 3.30am, with beverage service until 3am. In addition, Southport Sharks Health + Fitness is moving to 24/7 operations from December 15. We are also excited to share that plans for our hotel development are progressing, with this project set to provide more car parking for members. We look forward to presenting you with more detailed information on this next year. As always, thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to build a better club for all. On behalf of the Board, management and staff, I would like to wish you and your families a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. Dean Bowtell Chief Executive Officer

Christmas Traditions There’s so many things to love about the festive season, but for many it is the rituals that families adopt that make this time of year so special. With the world becoming a global village, Christmas is celebrated in many countries around the world. The traditions that go along with these celebrations are widely diverse, varying for different cultures, religious groups, countries and even towns.
The town of Gävle in Sweden erects a giant goat made out of straw to mark the beginning of the holiday season. Every year since 1966 the giant goat has faced arsonists and vandals (sometimes disguised as Santa Claus or elves) intent on its destruction. In 27 of those years it has succumbed mostly to fire.
In the Czech Republic single women are known to perform an unusual ritual on Christmas Eve Day to see if they will marry the next year. With their backs to the house door, they throw one of their shoes over their shoulder. If the front of the shoe points towards the door, it means she will move out of her parent’s house, and she should start making wedding preparations.
In the Venezuelan capital Caracas, it is customary for people to roller-skate to early morning church services from December 16 to 24, with the roads often closed to traffic to make it safe for people to skate.
Children in Vietnam believe in the existence of Santa Claus and put their shoes in front of their doors on Christmas Eve. On Christmas morning they wake up to find their boots filled with treats and presents laid under the Christmas tree.
In Russia, Christmas is celebrated on January 7, thanks to the Russian Orthodox Church that has made it an official holiday in the country. A typical Russian Christmas dinner includes delicacies such as hot roast pirog (Russian pies made out of meat or cabbage), and pelmeni (meat dumplings).

RO L E BRIN GS VA RIETY AND
plenty of beer Beverage Manager of Southport Sharks, Adam Paterson, brings his experience all the way from Her Majesty’s motherland, with 8 years expertise in managing a group of English pubs in the UK. Adam moved to the Gold Coast in 2012 with his wife Amy and beloved dog Bear (with the wife’s approval of course). He started at Sharks in July 2013 and hasn’t looked back since. Adam gives a snapshot into the diverse day of managing the bars at Southport Sharks and sheds light on his beverage of choice this summer.
What prompted your move to the Gold Coast? We moved back to Australia after getting married in England. I had brought my wife to the Gold Coast twice on holiday (secretly to test the waters). We both love the region. I find that people come here for their holidays all time but don’t get to see the real Gold Coast. What does your role involve? Fortunately for me in general I don’t have a typical day. My role includes planning promotions and upcoming activity for our five bars, plus managing bottleshop activity and promotions. Coordinating beverage suppliers, musicians and consumable suppliers takes up some of my week. I love seeing when new products we try at Sharks become very popular. The worst part of my job is having to sample and try new products, but I suppose someone has to. What is your drink of choice? My drink of choice would certainly be a nice cold beer; beer of choice at the moment would probably be Mountain Goat Fancy Pants. Otherwise I have been trying a few different IPA’s. There are so many new craft beers constantly coming into the market. I will also add that I cannot go past a nice glass of red with dinner. How do you spend your time outside of work? At the moment it would probably be working on the house. We bought our first house last year and we are continually working on it. Besides that I love to travel, I think South America is next on my hit list.

NATIONAL PASTRY DAY DECEMBER 9 Did you know that pastries have been around since 2600 B.C.? The Egyptians made doughnut-like pastries out of crude flour and honey, and then dipped them in wine. In the 7th century, pastry-making developed as a culinary art form in the Middle East. It spread to Europe after the Crusades, and French and Italian chefs developed their own version of the recipes and experimented with new techniques. There are now many different types of pastry including shortcrust, flaky, puff and phyllo. Make a trip to the CafĂŠ to pick up your favourite kind of pastry on December 9 in honour of National Pastry Day. If you are a sweet lover, then treat yourself to eclairs or a danish. Alternatively, you can try one of the delicious gourmet pies if you are chasing something savoury.

SPOTLIGHT ON SOLO ARTISTS
SPOTLIGHT
ON SOLO ARTISTS DAMO INNES
ALEX FIETZ
DALLAS JAMES
Damo Innes is an electrifying performer capable of creating the unexpected.
Gold Coast pianist and vocalist Alex Fietz belts out sweet soulful classics with a distinctive touch of class and originality.
Eclectic, insightful and sometimes a little edgy and provocative, Dallas James’ sound combines beautiful reverb-laden vocals over the gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar. His music captures heartfelt stories of struggle, love, loss and hope.
Originally from New Zealand and Canada, he has recently arrived in Australia to start a brand new chapter in a music catalogue spanning over two decades. What makes Damo truly unique is his humorous stage presence accompanied by his genuine skill. Damon will perform at Cabana Bar & Lounge on December 27 from 1pm.
16
Alex has a repertoire of over a thousand songs featuring a diverse selection of popular sing-alongs, classic hits and the latest Top 40. He covers Andrea Bocelli to AC/DC and everything in-between. Watch Alex live on the main stage from 6.30pm on December 23, December 30 and January 6, plus from 11am on January 26 for Australia Day.
The Byron Bay artist gained nationwide fame in early 2014 as a soloist on The Voice. Dallas has also played alongside acts such as Ash Grunwald, Grinspoon, Spiderbait and Wolfmother, with his previous band ‘The Grains’ which he fronted. On January 24 from 1pm you can watch Dallas live at Cabana Bar & Lounge.

HUSSY HICKS Since forming in 2006, Julz Parker and Leesa Gentz have forged their way into the global music scene with their unique sound. The genre defying Hussy Hicks have been welcomed with honorary memberships into blues, folk, country and jazz circles, spreading their good vibes across festival stages and venues throughout Europe, America and Australia. When they’re not touring the pair happily base themselves between the southern Gold Coast and northern NSW. Hussy Hicks will perform a free live show at Southport Sharks main stage on Saturday, January 9 from 8.30pm. The gig will be one of the first chances for people to pick up their new album ‘That Old Heartache’ locally.
in our adult lives too, so a lot of our biggest musical influences are actually friends we meet along the way. What has been the highlight of your music career so far? It’s hard to pinpoint one particular highlight but I do remember having a mid-gig moment of reflection when we were playing in Rome in the Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. It’s an old Roman piazza and I remember thinking midsong, as I looked out over a couple of thousand people, just how lucky we were to have our little songs bouncing off the ancient walls and filling the piazza. Sometimes you get caught up in little technical things during a gig – that was one where I managed to really soak it all in.
Q & A WITH HUSSY HICKS’ JULZ PARKER
What sort of set can people expect at your gig?
What can people expect from your new album and what was the recording process like?
We will just try and make music and have a great night. There’ll be lots of improvising because that keeps it interesting for us and with the full band there will be lots of vocal harmonies and hopefully a big fat sound.
We have been traveling to Alabama for the past 10 years and have a great musical family over there. With this recording we just gathered up some of those friends and went into our friend Rick’s studio on Dog River in Mobile and jammed out some new songs. The sound is a bit different from our last album as I guess it took on some of that southern soul. Who are some of your biggest musical influences? We have a massively varied list of influences. I grew up listening to Neil Young and lots of blues music and Leesa’s upbringing was more in traditional county. We’ve both travelled lots
What can people expect from Hussy Hicks in 2016? Any ultimate hope for the future? Ultimately, we just hope we can keep doing what we’re doing, making new albums and traveling the world playing our little songs to anyone who’ll listen. As long as we’re enjoying it all we’ll keep it up. In 2016 we’ve got a pretty full on year of touring planned. Heading to Sydney and West Oz in February then home for Easter then doing the European festival season from May through to August.

Jarrod Field (left) and Matt Kennedy.
’S LL A B T OO F
S R E D A NEW LE Southport Sharks’ football department has been reinvigorated with new leadership ahead of the 2016 season. The club is pleased to announce that the appointment of Jarrod Field as General Manager – Football Operations, has been coupled with Matt Kennedy being appointed in a new position of Manager – Player Performance & Administration. Jarrod has a great deal of experience, having been Football Operations Manager at Broadbeach and Labrador Australian Football Clubs and Operations Manager at Metricon Stadium. He has held a number of coaching positions over the past 16 years at the above clubs and also at Gold Coast SUNS. Jarrod also guided Labrador to premiership victory in the QAFL this past season. Matt has a long-standing and successful history with Sharks, having been a premiership player in 1989 and the Football Operations Manager from 2004 to 2005. Matt played during the 1990s for both the Brisbane Bears and the Brisbane Lions after the Bears merged with Fitzroy. After 188 games of league football, he retired during the 2001 season. Most recently he has been working for the Gold Coast SUNS, as a conditioning coach from 2010 to 2014 and this past season as a high performance manager.
5 MINUTES WITH JARROD FIELD Jarrod Field has spent numerous seasons tracking Sharks’ success, while at other clubs on the Gold Coast. He is excited to now be on the other side of the fence as the new General Manager – Football Operations. “I can’t wait to get stuck into it. I’m well aware of the success and history of the footy club,” he says. “I’m taking over from a club legend, but I’ll probably bring some different ideas to the table. I’ve been talking to the football committee about where we’re at with recruiting. We’re confident that we’re going to be competitive.” Jarrod has spent the last 25 years on the Gold Coast, after growing up in the AFL heartland of Melbourne. “We’re definitely at an all-time high as far as participation goes,” he says of the state of the code in the region. Jarrod lives in Robina with his wife Sharon and three sons Brayden, 12, Mason, 10 and Aussie, 8. They’re definitely a football family, with the boys playing Aussie Rules and down-time spent watching the Gold Coast SUNS in action.

THIS SEASON’S
S T N E M O TOP M Ben Headland “Round 1 versus Brisbane; to run out as captain of this great club and to experience the win against the Brisbane Lions is a feeling I will never forget.”
Jason Burge “It was a really proud moment to play my 150th game for this club. It is where I played my junior football and I love the place.”
Jim Holland Glen Screech Our home game versus NT Thunder was bizarre; we didn’t score in the first and third quarters, yet came away with a win against one of the top sides.
“My debut game for the Sharks; to run out alongside players like Josh Hunt, Jarred Brennan and to be coached by Nathan Bock, it was almost surreal.”
Haydn Kiel “My return game after 12 months on the sidelines after knee surgery; running out with the boys I knew that all the hard work and rehab had really paid off.”
