Sharks Supports
Daffodil Day
With cakes, slices and cupcakes galore, the back-of-house at Southport Sharks was a sweet-tooth’s haven on August 22 as zealous bakers put their egos on the line to see who could whip up the best creation in the name of charity. Every day around 350 Australians are diagnosed with cancer, but every day there is more reason for hope than ever before. Cancer research is discovering new and better treatments, cancer prevention campaigns are working and support for those affected by cancer is improving all the time. Participating in Daffodil Day is one way for people to show they care about beating cancer. That’s why an inaugural Daffodil Day Staff Bake Off was organised at Southport Sharks. There were 24 registrations and all goods had to be home-made, with no packet mixes allowed. After much deliberation, the judges, who were impressed with the quality and range of entries presented, could not decide between two dishes on the day, declaring a tie for first place. The winners were Justin Bugg for his lemon and passionfruit slice and Maureen MacPherson for her pumpkin cheese cake. Those who didn’t register to bake could still help fundraise by purchasing goods, with each purchase equalling a vote for the People’s Choice Award, which was awarded to Sharda Jablanski for her banoffee pie. A donation of $428.95 raised from the bake off will go to the Cancer Council to continue its work. Additional donations placed in the Fountain of Youth during August have also gone towards this worthy cause. Thank you for your generosity!

FASHION AT THE FOREFRONT WHILE THE HORSES MAY BE TAKING TO THE TRACK AT FLEMINGTON RACECOURSE, YOU NEEDN’T WORRY ABOUT MISSING OUT ON THE GLORY AND GLAMOUR THAT EPITOMISES THE MELBOURNE CUP, AS SOUTHPORT SHARKS WILL ONCE AGAIN BE HOST TO THE PREMIER SOCIAL EVENTS ON THE GOLD COAST.
“The race that stops the nation” has become an opportunity for the fashion industry to showcase its wares and for women and men to indulge in their passion for fashion. Fashion will be front and centre at Sharks on November 4, with one of Australia’s leading designer brands, Charlie Brown, being chosen to feature in the Sharks Events Centre luncheon’s fashion parade, as coordinated by Debbie Reeder and her wonderful team at Reeder Management. “Her cheeky, elegant and sophisticated fashion is perfect for the Gold Coast fashionistas who want superb quality but timeless pieces with a hint of chic,” Debbie says of the designer. “The beautiful models will be a gorgeous blend of ages and will also display a range of sizes within the Charlie Brown collection. There will also be eye candy for the ladies as the male model will make you smile with his entertaining catwalk presentation.” Meanwhile in the Cabana Bar & Lounge, guests will be treated to a fashion show featuring local boutiques and garments from well-known designers. No matter what function you choose to go to you’re assured of a fabulous time! So, how do you ensure you look the stylish part?
“Colour is important this season and adding stylish accessories and a fascinator or hat a must” Debbie says. Millinery makes a race-day outfit and often acts as the anchor to a polished look. That’s why all Sharks events are rewarding fabulous fashion choices with prizes for best outfit, as well as another prize for best fascinator.

Scrambled, whisked into an omelette, boiled to oblivion or poached to perfection – there’s no wrong way to eat an egg, but did you know your choice gives more than a little insight into your personality? A study for the British Egg Industry Council was carried out by Mindlab International, which researches the psychology of consumer choice, with researches quizzing 1,010 adults to find fascinating links between egg choice and personality. How do you like to eat an egg? Make your choice, then find out what that says about you by reading the below snippets of the study results.

RLD EGG DAY!
For centuries, eggs have played a key role in feeding families around the world. They are an unbeatable package when it comes to versatility, high nutrient density and top-quality protein. Eggs are a good source of riboflavin, vitamin B12, phosphorus and selenium, plus they are low in calories with a medium egg containing around 70 calories. There’s even a special day to recognise eggs! The International Egg Commission has proclaimed the second Friday in October as World Egg Day. Instead of trying to fill one day with egg-tastic options, why not set aside the whole month of October to try out new egg ideas with your family? Crack open your imagination! Egg-cellent options at Southport Sharks include quiche, bacon and egg toasted sandwiches, baked treats such as cheesecake and many more.

Mackenzie’s Sports Bar saw a facelift in 2012, with a new grass wall only just added in August. To reflect the changes to the bar, but simultaneously pay homage to its history a new logo has been created. The venue takes its name from Southport Sharks’ Club President, Dr. Alan ‘Doc’ Mackenzie. Dr. Mackenzie’s life at Southport began early in the 1970s when he started his medical practice on the Gold Coast. He was elected Southport president in 1974 and has held the position every year since. In 2012 he was recognised by the AFL and awarded the highly prestigious Jack Titus Service Award.

Dallas James Eclectic, insightful and sometimes a little edgy and provocative, Dallas James’ sound combines beautiful reverb-laden vocals and poetic lyricism over the gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar. Dallas has played alongside acts such as Ash Grunwald, Grinspoon, Spiderbait and Wolfmother with his previous band The Grains, which he fronted. The Byron Bay artist, who has been performing professionally for about eight years, gained nationwide fame earlier this year when appearing as a soloist on The Voice in Team Joel. Dallas says his experience on the show was life changing in terms of character development and self-analysis, as well as “real cool, real fun and real scary”. “I’ve stayed in contact with many of the contestants and producers and even doing a heap of shows with some of the artists,” Dallas says. The self-described “cruisy” performer likes to feel out the crowd at his gigs and go with whatever vibe is present, taking inspiration from life itself to form his lyrics, with nature, relationships, personal struggles and the human struggle in
16
general providing particular stimulus. “I try to keep a balance of positive and negative themes, with an intentional lean toward the positive,” he says. Currently working on crowd-funding and releasing an album before the end of the year, Dallas hopes to continue touring and gaining as many fans as possible through a grass-roots approach. “I believe that dreams can be achieved; you just need to believe and find the right thought patterns accompanied by the right actions. Sometimes they take a while, but if you live in the present you have already achieved the greatness you desire,” he says.
Ultimately, I’d like to be on a similar kind of level as someone like Jack Johnson for example. But I’m happy to be where I’m at, in this moment.
To catch Dallas live, check out Love Sundays at Cabana Bar & Lounge on November 26 from 12pm.
Hailing from Brisbane and Northern Rivers in New South Wales, uniquely talented and charismatic collective TiMBAH relentlessly tour the east coast of Australia, winning over crowds with their acoustic folk rock and roots sound. Lead by the intricate guitar work and voice of Nye Stewart, and backed by the rollicking percussion of brother Abe, the TiMBAH line-up also includes Bart Stenhouse on bass guitar, violinist Liz Young and Ronaldo Januario on the banjo, guitar and harmonica. TiMBAH are taking on the Sharks main stage on October 10 from 8.30pm!
Timbah is very much a live band, improvising, changing and jamming on the songs in a live environment, Nye says. It’s been a hectic last few months for the band, with the musicians spending the last three months in the studio producing their second album. The songs are written by Nye and Abe and arranged by the group. “The band members have travelled and performed extensively overseas and
TiMBAH
the sound has evolved incorporating influences from South America, Europe, South East Asia and India,” Nye says. TiMBAH are known for their focus on community development, sustainable living and social inclusion, so when they haven’t been recording or touring, the band have been busy running musical instrument building workshops in Indigenous communities and with people living with mental illness or disability. Nye says the band also just returned from the Central Highlands Multicultural Festival, where they facilitated all the AV production and 25 multicultural musical acts. So, what does this musically diverse and socially conscious group hope for in the future? “To be continuously improving as musicians and as a live act. To continue to write and record music and collaborate with other artists we admire and respect,” Nye says. TiMBAH will be releasing their new album in spring, so keep an eye out online for live recordings and video footage from their shows at www.timbah.com.

SPOTLIGHT ON SILKA The smiling face that ensures every experience at the Cabana Bar & Lounge is a memorable occasion is actually a recognisable one, belonging to Gold Coast identity Silka Kurzak. At Southport Sharks the team is diverse, hailing from across the globe and bringing to the mix a range of different talents and ambitions. Adding her own flair to that mix is Paradise Waters resident Silka, who took over the role of Cabana Bookings Administrator in July. Silka, who also currently works as a professional model with Katz Model Management, saw a boost to her career after being named this year’s Face of QT Fashion Week and Awards. She says it was an honour to be selected. After winning the final Silka appeared in all marketing material for the third annual fashion week, which ran from May 29 until June 1. “Not only did we have a lot of fun shooting the promotional material, but it was so rewarding to represent our local designers and wear their gorgeous collections! Talulah, Misha Collection and Mariam Seddiq were some of my favourites,” she says. “I love dressing up and creating different characters with different looks.” The down-to-earth natural beauty has a background in business, along with a Bachelor of Business, double major; in

Marketing and Event Management. Silka loves talking to people, so she says being able to host them from the beginning of an enquiry to the actual event is a real treat. “It’s very rewarding to see happy customers on their special day, whilst creating long lasting memories,” she says. “My previous experience in a similar role, combined with my passion for providing a high standard of customer service, was one of the reasons I was attracted to the role but I must say the venue itself is what got me in the end! Who wouldn’t want to work hosting great people in a funky bar?” FOUR SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT SILKA • Born in Germany, Silka moved to Australia when she was very young. Her first languages were Polish, French, Italian and then English. • In 2013 Silka was the only Queensland girl to make it into the top 10 for the Miss Universe Australia finals. She was asked to come back in 2014, where she managed to make it to the national finals again for Queensland. • Her father was invited to join Mensa in his mid-twenties. Silka’s got her fingers crossed for an invite herself! • She knows self-defence, with a brown belt in karate

a holistic approach to health When you first walk into Southport Sharks Health and Fitness, you can sense the building is home to more than simply a gym in the traditional sense; it’s a place where people can take charge of their lifestyles in a positive way via several channels in a supportive environment. This affirmative aura is due in part to the presence of personal trainers such as Mel Mukti, who take a genuine interest in their client’s whole well-being. Mel has worked at Sharks for the last two-and-a-half years, recently adding to his qualifications by becoming a level one Holistic Life Coach. “I enjoy teaching, learning off others and helping people quantify their goals with their life values,” he says. It was his own struggles and issues with injuries that proved a catalyst for Mel to become involved in the industry, with a fractured back and blown-out discs just some of the injuries he has overcome. Now Mel’s counts core conditioning and rehabilitation, injury prevention, athletic strength and performance among his specialties. Mel’s point-of-difference is that he can provide clients with the missing link to achieve the body they want and to improve their vitality and energy levels, utilising training as a tool to connect the mind, body and spirit together.
26
Finding out what a person’s base platform is by asking them about aspects of their daily routine such as nutrition, medications, allergies and water consumption, allows Mel to help clients find a more sustainable lifestyle through a holistic and personalised program. “That’s my job – to guide. I give people the tools towards self-awareness,” he says. “I invite you to come and have a chat to me so I can help steer you towards your goals.” With support, motivation and the right advice, any of nine Southport Sharks Health and Fitness highly-qualified personal trainers can work with you to achieve your goals. Whatever your objectives are, Sharks have the right personal trainer for you.

Football Report Well, in the blink of an eye our football season has finished and without sugar coating anything we, as a collective, were all disappointed with the results. Importantly we need to learn from the season and take on board that the competition is only getting better in terms of standard and it is of the utmost importance now to thoroughly review our football operations and do everything we can to ensure we learn from our season just gone. We have already commenced review meetings with our coaches including our high performance coaches and all our playing list. Key areas to review we feel are as follows: • • • •
Club off-field structure Pre-season programme Club culture The balance of players fitting in training/playing requirements with their full-time jobs/studies, etc; and • The playing list and any additions we feel can assist the group. This will be about how we can do things better and identify areas that can make a difference to our overall programme. Next season will see a reformatted NEAFL Competition with the Canberra teams reducing from four teams to two teams. In Sydney from a community club perspective we will see two community clubs scale back to one community club. The AFL has also advised we will now play all four AFL reserve teams in the home and away season which will be an

11 team competition as follows: • • • • • • • • • • •

This represents a fantastic challenge for us as a club as we continue representing the club and the Gold Coast region in the NEAFL competition. We are also very conscious of providing a talent pathway for all Gold Coast players who wish to pursue their AFL football dream. The coaches and playing group will now get a decent break to refresh before pre-season starts early to midNovember 2014. Discussions so far with coaches, players and football committee have all been very positive with an overriding view we need to step up for season 2015. We thank all our sponsors, supporters, volunteers, coaches, players and look forward to having everyone on board for season 2015. Kind Regards Jason Cotter Football Manager
Southport Sharks has continued its work in fostering the development of Australian Rules Football, with our players and broader footy community joining forces with Gold Coast Suns players to donate various pieces of footy gear so as to enhance the game in Vanuatu. Through staying in contact with Blair Mortimer, who was one of the Sharks’ under-18 players last year and who after working with AFL Queensland was given a posting in Vanuatu, board director Rick Fankhauser and wife Lyndy saw photos of teams playing barefoot and in mixed jumpers. They decided to try to organise a collection of merchandise for AFL Vanuatu that would be distributed by Blair to the neediest of teams, asking Sharks and Suns players if they could help by donating their old boots. In total 52 boots were collected, with Sharks supplying 54 of last year’s jumpers, 45 pairs of shorts and 20 pairs of new socks. The parcel was freighted in August. Grateful to all the players for their contribution, Rick says the hope is that the kits will help promote Australian Rules Football in Vanuatu and make the game more enjoyable for the local players. “As a club, we were overwhelmed by the level of support that the players provided to this initiative,” says Brent Kelly, NEAFL Operations and Development Manager at Southport Sharks. “The amount of gear that the boys brought in was staggering. Who knows, this might encourage a young man to take up our game and we might see them in a Sharks jumper here in the future.”
