We have dusted off our cozy wool sweaters and traded our sandals for shoes a bit warmer so we can get out to enjoy our favorite winter activities. Our colorful leaves of fall have found their way to the earth’s floor as roaring fires and tiny ice sculptures in the form of snowflakes flutter announcing winter’s arrival on the Plateau. This past year has been a reminder of just how precious life is and for us to cherish each and every moment. We have been reminded the beauty of life and so we encourage you to take a breath, look around, and appreciate this beautiful place we call home. Take the time to get out and do something you love here on the Plateau. Perhaps it’s hitting the slopes in Sapphire Valley, taking a walk around the lake, treating yourself to a spa day, or going to your favorite hiking spot (Ranger Falls in Highlands, or Whiteside Mountain Trail which is conveniently located in between Highlands and Cashiers, or maybe Bald Rock in Sapphire). Maybe it is just sitting by the fire with a drink in hand listening to friends and family laugh. Whatever it is, enjoy and be present.


While 2020 was difficult in many ways, the real estate market has been astounding. At the end of December, the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors and Landmark’s volume of sales doubled from 2019 to 2020. This statistic highlights what a significant year we have experienced on the Plateau. And to boot, Landmark maintains its #1 status, in terms of volume and total number of transactions in the HCBOR for another year. Home and land sales across the North Carolina mountains, after dipping in April and May, show no sign of slowing down, even considering the lack of inventory. Homeowners are benefitting from the insatiable demand that is keeping inventory at record lows. Increasing seller confidence and a seemingly unending buyer pool has made 2020 a record year for the HCBOR. Landmark Vacation Rentals has had an equally exceptional year. With so many changes of how we work, many have decided to take their work on the road and explore.
