While there have been many amazing husband and wife teams residing on our plateaus and peaks, the first true power couple was Louise Bascom and Watson Barratt. This creative duo connected when Watson Barratt, artist, set-designer, illustrator, cartoonist, painter, and interior decorator illustrated an article written by Highlands' native, Louise Rand Bascom, author, playwright, and short story writer. It was sizzle at first sight. Back up a few years to Barratt's beginnings. He was born in 1884 in Salt Lake City, Utah. After high school he ventured to New York City. Completing two years at the Chase School of Art, Barratt had his first brush with notoriety, drawing cartoons and cover designs for the likes of Life, Harper's Bazaar, Harper's Weekly, and The Saturday Evening Post.

Louise Bascom was the daughter of Henry M. Bascom, "The Highlands Prince", a dominant figure in Highlands history serving as mayor several terms.

In 1912, with a decade of cartooning and illustration to his credit, Barratt tried his hand at little theater set design. Six years later he took bows for his first Broadway show, Sinbad with Al Jolson, yes, the Al Jolson. Simultaneously he became art director for J.J. Schubert at the Winter Garden (a Broadway theater in mid-town Manhattan) where he designed every show for the next ten years. There he continued art direction and set design with the likes of Ethel Barrymore and Florenz Zeigfeld. Barratt was in demand. At age 36 he slowed his pace a bit and married Louise Bascom. Even though their professional stomping grounds were predominantly in metropolitan areas, their hearts belonged to the highlands, and they made visits whenever schedules gave them a glint of daylight. While Watson's work required his being on site at the theater, Louise could write 'most anywhere. She wrote plays, which revolved around

its own Board of Directors, wrote its own bylaws and hired its own staff. As an independent non-profit, the art center grew even more rapidly. It quadrupled its exhibit schedule over a six-year period, bringing in exceptional two- and three-dimensional work from all over the Southeast.

North Carolina folklore. She also wrote novels and edited The New York Central's Railroad Monthly Magazine until her passing in 1949. Louise Bascom was the daughter of Henry M. He was a longtime supporter of the Hudson Library, and his bequest to fund a gallery within the new library was visionary at the time. Creating an exhibition space and permanent collection in a village of just a few hundred residents distinguished Highlands as a progressive community committed to nurturing its local and regional talents and to celebrating its natural assets.

In 2009 “The Bascom” opened it’s doors at the new stateof-the-art home: a public, six-acre "green" campus with a 27,500 square foot main building, multiple studios devoted to a range of art media, covered bridge signature entrance, creek-side nature trail, outdoor terrace and more. Today, The Bascom is a beloved creative resource for art lovers and artists at all ability levels, as well as the community as a whole. Programming includes expansive community outreach, a wide range of exhibitions, highquality art workshops, a permanent art collection, and community events.

Even though Barratt died in 1962, his dream lived on. The plans for building the modern Hudson Library building incorporated proceeds from the estate. The BascomLouise Gallery within the new library was a solid volunteer endeavor that evolved over time.

Kudos to the Bascom/Barratt power-couple, who gave birth to the Bascom-Louise Gallery, which grew into The Bascom...A Center For The Visual Arts.

In 1999, the Hudson Library and the Bascom-Louise Gallery amicably decided to separate their operations. The art center received its own not-for-profit 501(c)3 status, formed

Ken comes to us with a 30 year history in hospitality management. Previously, he was the General Manager of the property management program for The Cliffs, in Travelers Rest, SC. There, Ken oversaw the reservations, housekeeping, maintenance and concierge services departments. He was responsible for more than 60 short term as well as seasonal and long term rentals. Now at Landmark Vacation Rentals, Ken works closely with our housekeeping and maintenance manager and directly oversees the reservations team.

As an area resident for many years, I am an admirer of the natural beauty of the mountains, lakes, rivers, creeks & waterfalls. Brian has helped hundreds of area residents reach their goal of owning a mountain home in his 27 years in the area. After graduating from Appalachian State, Brian joined Wachovia (now Wells Fargo) and relocated to the area. Brian’s love of real estate led him to obtain his NC Real Estate License 13 years ago. Brian has four children, three attending Appalachian and one recent AppState graduate. Brian is passionate about helping his clients and he firmly believes that there is no better place to live than on the plateau.

A native of NEGA, Carl grew up with a love of the outdoors and the mountains. A graduate of Georgia Tech, his career has included construction, historic rehabilitation, commercial banking and managing a third generation family business. He renovated numerous houses and spent weekends at his home in Highlands. After the sale of the business, he became a full time resident and has focused on real estate. He can bring his experience in real estate, construction and finance together to help buyers and sellers.

Mark and his wife Laura have been residents of Highlands for the past 25 years. Laura operates Rosenthals Boutique on Main Street. Mark has used his extensive business knowledge to grow the company at the same time that he has developed an impressive customer base for his real estate sales. He prides himself on forming a special bond and friendship with each of his clients. Mark and Laura have a teenage daughter who attends Pinecrest school in Fort Lauderdale where the family spends the winter months.

Diane Stumm has lived in Cashiers since 1994 she was hired as the Cashiers Community library director. Her others careers were in public relations and fund development. She is known for knowledge of the area, the local real estate market and current trends. “As we live in a small community with the cultural and recreation opportunities of a much larger town, it is pleasure to share these with new comers.” Diane’s goal is to have her clients feel that she has served them responsibly, honestly, and knowledgeably.

Ken is a North Carolina native hailing from Charlotte. After attending UNC at Chapel Hill, Ken returned to Charlotte. His background is in Customer Service so moving into Real Estate was an easy transition. His specialty is in the 2nd home market and working for Cottingham Chalk and Keller Williams represented WCDM Development from Macon, GA in their luxury Rosewood Condominiums. Moving to the Plateau in 2013 he joined Landmark Realty Group as it’s BIC for the Frank Allen office and General Manager for the Plateau.

Bill and his wife, Cherie have been coming up to the Cashiers area since since the early 80’s. Their love for the mountains led to a number of successful real estate investments, which helped them learn the local market. During 2007 they moved up to Cashiers full time and Bill has been very involved in real estate ever since. As a Realtor he loves living in Cashiers and strongly believes in property investment as a good long term strategy. Bill will always go the extra mile to help clients find their dream property.

Mary Whitten studied at The Savannah College of Art and Design with a focus in fashion design. Recently, she has relocated back to the Highlands/ Cashiers area and joined Landmark in February 2018. Within the short amount of time living here, she has worked as a graphic design consultantupon request- and continues to work on her evergrowing portfolio. Mary Whitten spends her free time hanging out with friends, playing guitar, and exploring all of the benefits the area has to offer.

A resident of Lake Toxaway, Carol has been a sales leader in Lake Toxaway since 2003. Her success is due in large part to her dedication to her clients & emphasis on strategic marketing. Prior to real estate, Carol created & grew a thriving marketing company. It was there that she mastered her skills of delivering results to her clients after careful consideration of their needs. Debra and her husband moved to this area after vacationing here in 2002, because they were amazed by the beauty of our area. Debra is a native of Indiana and graduated from Cleveland State University with a degree in marketing. Rob owned & operated several GNC franchises until ‘05. When he visited the area in ‘04 he immediately fell in love w/the beautiful mtns & Highlands/ Cashiers plateau. He moved to Glenville in 2005, married Susanne Moore, local home designer & general contractor & started a new career in real estate. Always an outdoor enthusiast, he enjoys hiking & skiing on Lk Glenville. “I’m enthusiastic about the real estate market in this unique area & enjoys the challenges of finding that perfect piece of property for my clients....”
