elcome to the April issue of IMT magazine. As I sit down and start to compose this, my inbox pings with the latest news from Messe Dusseldorf. Within the message, is a press release about the introduction of a new hall for plastic tube/ pipe at Wire & Tube Dusseldorf 2014. This gets me thinking, and as a result, I would be extremely interested to hear your feed back on the selection ǡ Ƥ evaluating the merits of metal or plastic.

We all appreciate there are some areas of industry that demand metal as a product choice. However, even as a domestic buyer, I have been faced with for example 1/2 inch copper tube for general plumbing work next to a plastic alternative. Commercially, and in an industrial buying situation when the two products are not in front of you, do you actively compare both. Could it be a cost based decision, is recyclability taken into account, ƪ over metal, or, is it simply application based?

The world’s largest cold bent tubes supplied to Sopot Outdoor Opera

A

fter recently celebrating its century anniversary, Sopot’s Forest Opera in Poland is currently undergoing a huge renovation. The Opera rebuilding project will see the structure’s unique location brought together with 21st century facilities and one of the best sound and vision systems in Europe. ͇͕͚Ǥ͚ ȋ͙͛ ÏȌ re-design contains the largest ever cold bent arches, curved by West Midlands based company, Barnshaw Section Benders. The modernized, open-air amphitheater, which sits in the picturesque Sopot forest, will be covered by a bowstring structure, shaped by two arches spanning 90m.

The project involved Barnshaws bending 16 steel tubes at 1300

cut diameter, which were bent to a radii of 49.785m. Supplied by Interfare Rohr Union, each tube was 70mm thick, with the largest section weighing 26 tonnes.

Contractors acknowledge that previous options of producing structures such as these were limited to induction bending or producing the curve by a series of facets, which is not so appealing architecturally. The tubes were the world’s largest ever to be cold bent, with a strength of 78,95cm3, Ƥ ͕͘͝ x 419 x 388 kg/m at the same time.

The jobs required a custom made bending machine and incredible forces to bend. In the end, the job supplied by Barnshaws added up to £322,000 worth of free issuing

bending. Typical applications for the machine used by the company’s expert benders are for stadia, roof structures and bridges.

Working well ahead of schedule, Barnshaws originally estimated a 22-week delivery date for the curving of all 16 tubes, on behalf of German agency Stabikon. However Ƥ merely 14 weeks. Architects and clients are encouraged to involve Barnshaws Section Benders at an early stage as limitations of previous bending capabilities are surpassed by the company’s acquired new technology.

Revolutionary, rotating in-line dimension measurement Zumbach Electronics, the Swiss manufacturer of inline measuring and monitoring systems, has developed a rotation-based laser scanning process that maps round and polygonal shapes up to ͚͔​͔​͔ Ǧ Ƥ Ǥ

o make production ƥ possible, modern in-line measurement devices are required, not only to measure parameters such as diameter, ovality, width and height at very high speed, but also to instantly detect shape deviations and rolling errors.

Some suppliers claim that in steel production, mechanical solutions are more than adequate for these purposes. But, not all manufacturers in the industry agree. Zumbach Electronics has been an innovation leader in the market since 1957, and its experience has shown it pays to continually develop new technologies, and solutions that deliver more precise measurements, thus contribututing to higher productivity. These very standards were applied to their latest product series, the Steelmaster SMR. Steelmaster units have been used in steel production for many years, Ǧ Ǧ improve the monitoring of hot rolling and cold processes. Until now, dimensional measurement and error detection have always been carried out by static or oscillating devices, depending on the application. These devices can measure with great accuracy the outer dimensions and diagonals Ǧ products such as squares, hexagons ƪ ǡ twist and angle of twist. Yet until recently, the level of precision achievable in manufacturing processes involving high rolling speeds and short lengths left much to be desired. The new Steelmaster SMR product generation, comes

with sophisticated technology in the shape of an innovative and much faster rotational measurement system. With its superior performance, the system opens up a whole new range of applications. The system is based on up to three fully synchronised Ǧ of the ODAC® series, which uses an innovative rotational principle to measure outer dimensions, ǡ Ǧ sections with 360o coverage. Each laser measuring head rotates at a speed of 100 rpm and maps the scanned products up to 2000 times per second to create a precise Ƥ Ǥ

New mill for Bolivia

O

TO just completed the production of a 1 ½” high productivity tube mill for delivery to Ferrotodo, a leading tube manufacturer located in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

This is the third tube mill that OTO havesupplied to this customer in ten years of extremely fruitful collaboration.

With this mill in place Ferrotodo will increase their share in the export market, and in particular, the automotive industry.

The tube mill has been installed with the aim of entering in the automotive industry, and will principally be used for the production of headrests, and the main frame for the seats for two top car manufacturers.

The machine is capable of manufacturing tubes in the range from 10mm up to 38mm, with

thicknesses up to 2mm, and the capability to process special high resistance steel, the mill is also able to produce stainless steel tubes.

Among the various features, the mill will be capable to produce

tube having very robust tolerance in diameter in order to satisfy the extremely stringent requirements of the automotive industry. This is the fourth mill of this specific size that OTO has manufactured so far, and one more is on order for

delivery to South America next year.

Small Radii for Shipbuilding

T

here are few other industries in which the consequences of globalisation can be seen as directly as in shipbuilding.

As such, for example, the speed, volume and size of container ships are constantly increasing in order to facilitate international transport of growing quantities of goods.

At the same time, shipyards are facing increasingly intense global competition. In Europe, the USA, Asia and even Australia, they compete for customers from civilian and military shipping.

In view of these developments, the focus is on the production processes in the shipyards: the motto is “greater speed, greater flexibility, greater efficiency” The example of tube bending machines, with which 10

different tubes and pipes have to be processed not only in vast quantities, is an interesting one.

Nowadays, the demand for space for the pipes on and below deck is also increasingly becoming a competitive factor. Complete test line for round tube

T

he two first test lines engineered and manufactured

by Olimpia 80, have been completed and checked in our plant on November 2012 before the delivery to the final customer.

The tube can be tested with different systems: Ȉ Ȉ Ȉ Ȉ The complete lines starting with two TIG tube mill for titanium material, to produce round tube in a range from 12.0mm O.D. to 60.3mm O.D. and from 0.4mm to 2.5 mm thickness.

Every line can test 100% of the tube, according the international standard rules, for a max length of tube 26 m.

Both testing lines are made up by: Ǧ of a driven rollway with rolls covered with Vulcolan and with

pneumatic arms for the tube feeding into a tool deburring device, to automatically remove both inside and outside burr. Casting cranes for the metal and minerals processing sector

T

erex Material Handling has been awarded a contract by Outotec for the delivery of two Demag casting cranes.

The process cranes will be used in Jazan Economic City, Saudi Arabia, where Outotec is building a new ilmenite smelter for Christal Global, which is the world’s second largest producer of titanium oxide.

The two identical cranes, which have load capacities of up to 120 tonnes, will be used for handling casting ladles and for feeding the casting furnaces with molten metal.

Maintaining pipework is critical in keeping the generating industry safe Keeping the lights on in the UK, is going to take billions of pounds in investment during the next decade as the Government attempts to overhaul the energy infrastructure, to cope with environmental targets and rising electricity demand.

M

aintaining new and existing power generating stations, whether they are nuclear, renewables, gas or thermal, is going to be crucial Ƥ and could prove very expensive.

Safety must always be the priority, but keeping downtime to a minimum, while maximising productivity, must also be factored in for them to be viable. Piping systems are required by power generating stations for conveying high pressure steam so therefore must be fabricated and welded to a very high standard that would meet the safety and operational requirements of each individual station. Also, from a maintenance angle, these piping systems must be inspected on a regular basis.

Failures in steam piping systems are infrequent, but could be critical to a power station’s generating capability. It is therefore essential that conditions with the potential Ƥ ǡ monitored and addressed. Regular

Bonatti chooses EFD post-weld solution for record-breaking pipeline

il and gas contractor Bonatti has selected an EFD Induction post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) solution to help build the world’s longest 13% Cr onshore pipeline.
