with overs to spare. However, the RBSC team was in better form the following day for the return 35 overs match with the Club’s batsmen posting a formidable total of 237 runs in 35 overs. The home side’s bowlers then performed with great control to dismiss the OCC batsmen for a score of 170. The weekend was once again a great opportunity to rekindle old friendships and was as much a social occasion as a sporting one.
SCC DOMINATES FRIENDLY MATCHES
F
ollowing the visit of Osian’s Cricket Club of India in November, it was the turn of Singapore Cricket Club to be welcomed by the RBSC Cricket Section for a double header of limited overs matches played on the weekend of 10th–11th December 2016. In the 20 overs match played on the Saturday, the visiting side batted first and posted a score of 125 runs in their allotted overs. Although a modest total, it proved to be enough as the SCC bowlers then restricted the RBSC batsmen to 101 runs in their innings. Things didn’t get much better at the batting crease for the home side in the 35 overs match played the following day. This time the RBSC
team batted first and looked to have scored a reasonable total of 191 runs. However, a dogged performance in the middle saw the visiting batsmen overhaul the RBSC total with overs to spare. The sides have enjoyed contesting friendly matches for many years now and the RBSC players will be looking to reverse the results the next time the teams meet.

or decades while much of South-east Asia experienced a massive increase in international travellers, Vietnam – and especially Hanoi – suffered from a severe hangover of a violent and destructive war and countless years of government isolationism. However, things began to brighten with the USA under the presidency of Barak Obama when once frosty relations between America and Vietnam began to normalize and US businesses such as Coca-Cola began to reignite foreign investment. Today, Hanoi is a bustling city of millions and is pretty much in the same vein as most other major cities in the ASEAN bloc expect for the fact Hanoi lacks any major skyscraper. This does nothing to diminish the Asian-ness of the city or its appeal to visitors from near and far. Unless you are planning to head to one of the country’s other major northern tourist destinations such as Halong Bay and Sapa, then a 3-night stay in downtown Hanoi is a fantastic option and one that is sure to open your eyes if you’re a first-time visitor.

From the grand plaza it is a short stroll to the One Pillar Pagoda, an iconic Buddhist temple that was originally erected in 1049 by Emperor Lý Thái Tông, considered one of the greatest kings and emperors in Vietnamese history. Designed to resemble a lotus blossom, it was rebuilt in the 1950’s after being destroyed by the French Union forces during the First Indochina War. This temple and its beautiful gardens symbolize Vietnam’s long history and is a wonderful place to sit and contemplate this nation’s long and chequered past.
Getting around central Hanoi is a piece of cake, but you could opt to joust with the locals and hire a motorbike if you’re feeling brave, but it really is much more fun to explore the city on foot. Slowly navigating the boulevards and side streets affords you with a close up of the real Hanoi where entrepreneurs’ businesses splash out on to the pavement before your very eyes and where secret gardens lay waiting to be discovered. The major draw to Hanoi though is undoubtedly the shrine to the nation’s eternal leader, Uncle Ho or more formally Ho Chi Minh. A massive mausoleum honouring his legacy dominates the grand plaza – Ba Dinh Square – and visitors must be careful to respect the seemingly petty rules of not stepping over the white lines that surround president Ho Chi Minh’s final resting place. Ba Dinh Square is also home to several other important buildings such as the President’s Palace, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the National Assembly Building.

Not far from the One Pillar Pagoda is the Citadel, the old centre of Hanoi and the former residence of Vietnamese monarchs dating back to Dai Viet, when the city was known as Thang Long. Like much of the country’s ancient architecture, the Citadel has been almost obliterated and only small sections remain today. However, even with these fragments of insights into the former layout it is clearly evident that Vietnam one thousand years ago was a sight to behold. If you’ve been pounding the pavements since early morning, right around now you’ll be ready for something to eat and there’s nothing better to feast upon than what many consider to be the national dish: a bowl of pho noodles. Like many things in Vietnam, the history of this dish has been lost to antiquity, but thankfully the taste remains delicious. In fact, it has been said by many a traveller that staying in the Old Quarter you could eat out for two weeks in a row without having the same meal twice. After dark a romantic location and trendy hangout is Hoan Kiem Lake, often referred as the Lake of the Restored Sword. This really is a masterpiece of Hanoi’s culture and history and locals and tourists alike flock to it just to be amazed. Originally constructed as a university in 1070, the lake depicts true Vietnamese style in a traditionally crafted architecture and gives

An evening in Hanoi would not be complete without a visit to the Hanoi Opera House, a building modeled on the Palais Garnier, the oldest opera house in Paris. Designed and built by French colonials between 1901 and 1911, the opera house is certainly one of the best types of colonial French architecture in the city that still exists today. In days gone by the opera house was used as a nationalistic tool but today it is possible to see mainstream performances by Vietnamese and international performers. The National Ballet is also part of the Hanoi Opera House and stages Western classics such as Swan Lake as well as traditional and modern Vietnamese dance productions. Perhaps its most famous inmate-cum-prisoner was John McCain, former presidential nominee who spent more than five years in captivity here. Today, all that remains of the century-old prison is the gatehouse, a harrowing reminder of the depths this amazing country has plumbed in its long history. Visitors in 2017 are accorded a much warmer welcome than those who came by air and sea some fifty years ago with the intent of changing the cosmetics of a nation steeped in history but lacking the political savvy of its ASEAN neighbours. RENEWABLE ENERGY Leonardo DiCaprio recently met with President-elect Donald Trump to discuss the economic benefits of renewable energy investments and how it could create millions of jobs — one of Trump’s key campaign promises. Trump’s daughter Ivanka also joined the meeting, making this her second sit-down with the Hollywood heartthrob since he gifted her a copy of his climate change documentary “Before the Flood”. Terry Tamminen, CEO of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF), told the Associated Press the meeting targeted Trump’s economic hopes, and attempted to demonstrate how clean energy can be a path to stability for the US. “Today, we presented the president-elect and his advisers with a framework – which LDF developed in consultation with leading voices in the fields of economics and environmentalism – that details how to unleash a major economic revival across the United States that is centered on investments in sustainable infrastructure.”
After a review of celestial data spanning 27 centuries, a team of astronomers has determined that Earth’s orbit slows almost two milliseconds every 100 years. If the slowdown continues, Earth will eventually experience an extra hour each day. Some careful math helped researchers estimate how long it might take for the orbit to slow enough to create a whole new hour. Collecting ancient documentation of celestial events, such as eclipses, was no small task. Researchers at Durham University and the UK’s Nautical Almanac Office collated data on events from 720BC to 2015, a span of 2,735 years. The oldest records came from Babylonian clay tablets written in cuneiform, with more added from ancient Greek texts, and scripts from China, medieval Europe, and the Arab region. But don’t start making plans for how to spend your extra hour as the results revealed it will be another two million centuries before Earth’s day lengthens to 25 hours.

MEDICAL UPDATE
WHY ARE COLONOSCOPIES IMPORTANT? A colonoscopy is a great step in the early detection of disease and cancers. Knowing about an ailment before it manifests into something more serious, and possibly untreatable, is the first step in a proper preventative health care routine. In the case of a colonoscopy, this screening is especially important for patients over 50 years old (who have no colon cancer risk factors other than their age) and those who have a family history of colorectal diseases or cancer. Moreover, a colonoscopy can help the doctor explore the possible causes of abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea, and other intestinal problems. Although preventative exams such as dental checkups, eye exams, general physicals, and women’s Pap smears and mammograms are usually done without hesitation, patients oftentimes are reluctant to schedule a colonoscopy. Many patients are anxious or afraid of undergoing anesthesia or are embarrassed by someone examining a part of the body that is often considered to be taboo.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT? Negative result – Assuming that you are of average risk of colon cancer, with no other risk factors other than age, a negative result indicates that the findings are normal and the doctor doesn’t see any abnormalities in the colon. In this case, the doctor may recommend another colonoscopy in 10 years’ time. Positive result – Colonoscopic findings are positive if polyps or any other abnormalities are found. Usually, polyps are non-cancerous, and the doctor will remove them during the colonoscopy. If one or more polyps are removed, the doctor will recommend follow up colonoscopies, depending on the polyp sizes, cell characteristics, and quantity. The duration of the procedures may last between 5-10 years, 3-5 years, or as little as 3-6 months. If the polyp has a high potential of becoming cancerous or is already at an early cancer stage, the doctor will inform you after the procedure with the full pathology report. A potential issue after the colonoscopy is if the doctor is concerned with the condition of the large intestine due to a poor view quality from poor bowel preparation. In this case, the doctor may suggest an additional colonoscopy.
TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR? You may feel uneasy or anxious bringing up the subject of a colonoscopy with your doctor, but don’t worry! They’ve talked about this topic with many first-time patients before and know how to calm fears and offer reassurance. If you still feel reluctant to schedule a colonoscopy, remember that this is the best method in detecting intestinal diseases and cancer, and that it’s worth the temporary discomfort. PERFECTING OCEANFRONT DINING Perfectly timed for the high season in Thailand, The Beach House at Santiburi Beach Resort and Spa has launched its new creative menu that features the best catches from the ocean and the juiciest steaks from the land prepared by Thailand’s celebrated culinary wizard, Chef Art. “My concept is to offer a new take on surf ‘n’ turf. I incorporate the restaurant’s high-temperature wood-fired oven to bring out the rich essences of the seafood and meats. I sous-vide the meat or slow poach the lobster, then finish it off in the oven to add extra flavour and aroma to the dishes,” says Chef Art. This simple yet sophisticated approach to the cuisine is beautifully reflected in the restaurant’s design, which is largely open-air. Many of the ingredients are sourced locally and Chef Art creates his own sauces and foams to add to the pleasure on the plate.

FISHY BUSINESSDRIVES INNOVATION Readers may remember that last year RBSC Magazine carried a feature on black caviar (see ‘Black Gold in Thailand’; April 2016 issue) and Caviar House Co., Ltd, the company established by Russian businessman Alexy Tyutin and Thai entrepreneur Noppadon Khamsai to import the delicious luxury product to the Kingdom. The feature also highlighted Thai Sturgeon Farm Co., Ltd., the ambitious second phase of the partners’ venture, a state-of-the-art 6.5 rai Sturgeon fish farm on the outskirts of Hua Hin. We can report that the facility is now operational and took delivery of its first 3,000 Sturgeon hatchlings in June 2016.
SWEET REVOLUTION
The juvenile fish are thriving and doubling in size week by week. However, given that it takes 3-4 years for the fish to mature, the ‘home-grown’ females won’t be producing caviar until late 2019. To speed up production, Tyutin and Khamsai now plan to bring in a second batch of more mature female fish that can be ‘milked’ of their precious eggs in a much shorter time frame. The aim is to harvest up to 1,500 kg of black caviar a year and around 30 tonnes of Sturgeon meat, which is extremely tasty – in the time of the Russian Empire, Sterlet, the smallest of the Sturgeon family, was known as “the Tsar of fish”. In the meantime, Tyutin and Khamsai continue to import four premium grade caviar products to Thailand. Discover more at www.sturgeon.co.th and www.caviarhouse.co.th.
A new premium rum from the island of Negros Occidental in the Philippines (known locally as ‘Sugarlandia’), made its debut in Bangkok in September 2016. Don Papa Rum – the name is inspired by Negros freedom fighter Papa Isio who led uprisings during the 1810s against the Spanish occupying his island – was introduced to the media and VIP guests at an exclusive cocktail masterclass event held at The Gardens restaurant on Sukhumvit Road. Made in small batches and distilled using dark molasses derived from the finest sugar cane grown on the slopes of the Mount Kanlaon volcano, the amber coloured rum is distinctive for a

smoky, velvety quality and a long, richly-textured finish. The rum’s flavour notes of vanilla, honey, and candied fruits are reminiscent of the classic bourbon whiskeys of the American South, which is not surprising given that Don Papa’s flagship spirit and limited-edition super premium spirit are aged for 7 and 10 years respectively in American oak barrels before they are charcoal-filtered. The rum can be enjoyed straight over ice but because of its slightly sweet and perfumed nature it lends itself particularly well to a range of cocktails. Find Don Papa behind the bar at upscale restaurants and exclusive 5-star hotel watering holes.

GOLF TIPS WITH PRO BILL
1
2
On the downswing, get your elbow ‘tucked’ into your right hip. This is when you will begin to stretch the right arm.
3
Fully extend BOTH arms like this on the follow through.
4
Do NOT fold the right arm across your body like this.
To increase clubhead speed, rotate your right forearm on top of the left forearm in your follow through like this.
EXTEND AND ROTATE TWO THINGS YOU MUST DO FOR A LONGER, STRAIGHTER GAME
If you’re looking to improve your golf swing and hit farther and straighter, start by learning to stretch your right arm on your follow through. Doing this will direct more of your energy straight towards your target. The natural motion of your right arm is to fold across your chest. However, you must teach yourself to throw your right arm out towards the target – much like taking a smooth stone and skipping it across water.
As the right elbow drops down towards your right hip on the downswing, snap your bent elbow into a straight position. As you do this, you also need to rotate your right forearm counter clockwise (or down). This helps to close the clubface as well as generate significant clubhead speed. In your follow through you want to feel your right forearm is rotating on top of the left forearm. Do these two things (extend and rotate arms) and your golf swing will improve dramatically!

Start your meal with paprika chicken served on a bed of quinoa tabbouleh, a dish that’s absolutely bursting with flavours and goodness. Typically a Middle Eastern vegetarian dish, tabbouleh is made with tomatoes, finely chopped parsley, mint, onion, and seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice, and salt. The main ingredient bulgur is replaced with what some people have dubbed it the “world’s healthiest food”, quinoa (“KEEN-wah”). With a high protein quality, it offers essential amino acids and antioxidant flavonoids.

For lighter main course options, the highly recommended poached duck egg with asparagus and served with Pama ham and grain mustard dressing is a delectable choice. Also highly rated are the Caprese D
