CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE subject it always surprises me just how few younger Members join the General meetings. This is a pity as the future of the Club belongs to our youngsters and they really should have a say in things or at least let us older Members know what they are thinking.

Dear Members, The EGM held to request an extra budget for the construction of the sports pavilion was attended by just over the required quorum of 100. The meeting overwhelmingly approved the proposals put forward by the GC and there were many constructive points raised from the floor by Members following the informative presentation made by Khun Charlie the convener of the House and Grounds sub-committee. Work will start soon and we can all look forward to seeing the new pavilion ready for use by the end of next year all being well. With so many voting members it is perhaps surprising to see how few actually turn up to attend and vote at General Meetings. On the one hand perhaps it shows that most of you are happy to entrust the running of your Club to the GC but on the other it would be good to see a more robust turnout to show that Members are actively involved in setting the direction for the future. I mentioned in my July magazine message that we would soon be surveying membership to ask their views on two important topics: gender equality and possible investment for a new Club facility outside of central Bangkok. One of the reasons for undertaking these two surveys is to actually get feedback from a wider section of Membership than the few who take the trouble to attend General Meetings. Armed with that feedback the GC can decide if and how to follow up on these two topics both of which would need Member approval at a GC to go ahead. While on the

The picture at the top of the column this month comes from the Nagoya horse racing course. Khun Suthep, chairman of the horse racing section, and I were recently guests of the Japan Racing association at their Asia Week of Racing festival. They were incredibly generous hosts and it was interesting to see how the Japanese horse racing scene compares to that in Thailand. Of course the circumstances are completely different but I dare say we can only dream of ever reaching similar heights. However seeing just what is possible when things fall into place perhaps one day we may see something similar in Bangkok. Finally a quick acknowledgement to Khun Chatchawin, chair of the Squash Section, for moving forward with the excellent youth program now being developed for our junior members. Khun Chatchawin, one of Thailand’s best ever squash players is offering coaching classes every Monday at 6 pm – 9 pm and we are seeing a healthy turnout of youngsters each week hoping to become as good as their coach in the near future.

GM’S PERSPECTIVE

Dear Members, The Extraordinary General Meeting held on Tuesday, 9th August 2016 provided overwhelming positive support for the motion to approve the additional budget required for the completion of the Sports Pavilion project to replace the current Golf House. This now means that the closure of the Golf House will happen on Monday, 26th September 2016, following horse racing on the previous day. Please take a long last look as it has served the Club well for many years; there are many fond memories for some I am sure. So the initial key dates are: Monday 26th September Monday 10th October Mid-November January 2017

Golf House Closure for decommissioning and strip-out Demolition Contractor commences site clearance Main contractor is handed site for Set-out, Piling and testing Basement and Substructure

Progress will be communicated to Members in regular bulletins. Management is committed to trying to minimize the inevitable disruption and inconvenience during the project and appreciate your cooperation and understanding during this time. In other Club news, the Thai Red Cross Society sincerely appreciates those Members and staff who participated in the blood donation on Thursday, 28th July 2016 with 84 donors providing this much needed support for Thailand’s depleted reserves. The Club’s charitable causes continued with the presentation of 77 post graduate scholarships to 13 different universities from Bangkok and the Provinces on Friday, 5th August at the Henri Dunant Hall. The Club cordially invites Members wishing to join a religious ceremony and blessing to mark the 115th Club Anniversary on Tuesday, 6th September 2016 at 9am at the Committee Box.

AMAZING ISTANBUL From Roman-era plumbing to Byzantine mosaics and Ottoman harems, Istanbul has thousands of years of history to share with visitors. After touring the mosques and palaces, the best way to unwind and relax is at one of the city’s famous Turkish hammams or hot baths.

If time is tight, focus on Istanbul’s big four attractions: Topkapi Palace, Haga Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and shopping at the Grand Bazaar or Egyptian Market. One of the best ways to explore this centuries old city is on a 90-minute Istanbul City Tour, hopping on and off at several stops, before taking a half-day tour highlighting an aspect of Istanbul’s millennia of history. Compare the city’s European and Asian faces on the Istanbul Two Continents Tour, or focus on the city’s Ottoman past on an Ottoman Relics Tour, taking in Topkapi Palace, Rustem Pasha Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar. All the top Istanbul attractions can be seen in one day on a small-group walking tour, typically led by an expert local guide. Focusing on the Sultanahmet area of this East-meets-West city, the tour visits incredible sites like the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hagia Sophia Museum and the Blue Mosque. Step back in time to a world of sultans and harems in Topkapi Palace, admire Hagia Irene’s Byzantine architecture and then watch local artists making handicrafts in the Grand Bazaar. The mesmerizing Hagia Sophia monument was once a church, then a mosque and now an intriguing museum. Stepping inside, it’s hard not to admire Hagia Sophia’s fascinating architecture, which draws on influences from both the Ottoman and Byzantine eras. Strolling through Sultanahmet Square, you come face to face with the

The site represented the heart of sporting and political life in the city during the Ottoman Empire. The nearby Blue Mosque has six intricate minarets that dominate Istanbul’s skyline, the mosque’s striking blue Iznik tiles giving the edifice its name. meze lunch, head over to Topkapi Palace Museum – one of the world’s largest and oldest palaces. Easily Turkey’s most important museum, the palace brims with relics of historical significance at every twist and turn. While exploring its four courtyards you discover the flamboyant lifestyles of the stylish sultans who lived in the palace between the 15th and 19th centuries, with the incredible Fountain of Sultan Ahmet III being a particular highlight and a great place for a ‘selfie’. After two hours inside Topkapi Palace, take a leisurely walk to Hagia Irene – a former Eastern Orthodox church – to admire its exterior and hear

about its history as the oldest Christian site of worship in Istanbul. Before the tour finishes, there is one last highlight of Istanbul to see - the Grand Bazaar. Here you can watch as local artists make handicrafts inside Turkey’s largest covered market and then spend time browsing the busy stalls and shops. Another must-visit tourist site is the Egyptian Spice Bazaar and Market where the heady scent of saffron, cloves and other exotic spices fill the air. Known locally as Misir Carsisi, this one of Istanbul’s oldest markets and it is easy to spend hours wandering along aisle after aisle where stallholders shout at the top of their voices to sell their wares.

This cavernous covered market, built in 1660, is lit by Turkish lamps, which make a good souvenir. Everywhere you look, baskets are ďŹ lled with every spice under the sun offering a kaleidoscope of colours – gold, orange, red, yellow and green. The array of dried fruits and nuts is also astounding. Try some Turkish delight, dried apricots, pistachios and walnuts, or honeyed sweets avoured with top-quality saffron‌ a true taste of the mystical East. This is a place where you should simply dive in and wander. Don’t have an agenda, just walk the crowded stalls and get lost. Stop for a cup of piping hot

tea sweetened with a raw sugar lump, stop to chat with a carpet seller, but most importantly don’t rush, take your time. In the evening, when the city’s mosques and monuments are oodlit, take a stroll along one of the many busy thoroughfares and see Istanbul by night. There are always plenty of restaurants that offer a full-course Turkish dinner with a oorshow that features amazing belly dancers! Finally, head down to the famous Bosphorus and catch a ferry to the mouth of the Black Sea. For students of more contemporary history, the beaches of Gallipoli are within reach

A great way to revive weary muscles after a day of touring Istanbul and its environs is a visit to one of the city’s hammams, many of which date back centuries. The Islamic equivalent of a Russian steam-bath or Scandinavian sauna, the hammam offers visitors the chance to unwind in the languid atmosphere of a series of hot rooms before experiencing a traditional massage and an invigorating cold plunge or shower. Built in the 1450’s and 1580’s respectively, two of the Istanbul’s ďŹ nest and most venerable hammams are Aga Hammam on Turnacibasi Street near Taksim Square, and Çemberlitas Hamman on Divanyolu Street in the Çemberlitas district. A visit to either will leave you refreshed and ready for another day exploring this amazing city.

Located on the south-eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, the United Arab Emirates comprise the sheikdoms of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwan, Ras al-Khaimah, and Fujairah. The capital and largest city of the federation is Abu Dhabi but the vast majority of visitors head to Dubai, where there are a number of lavish hotels and myriad tourist attractions. Naturally, much of the UAE comprises desert which, strangely enough, happens to be the perfect foundation for golf courses. Simply add lots and lots of fresh water, some 21st century hybrid grass, and a course design by a Master’s winner and you’ve got a successful recipe. The top course in the Gulf for a number of years has been the Majlis course at The Emirates Club (see below), home to the renowned Dubai Desert Classic. But there have been a number of fantastic additions to the golfing scene with two new courses designed by Greg Norman at Jumeirah Golf Estates (see below), called Fire and Earth. In addition, the Kyle Phillips and Gary Player creations of Yas Links (see below) and Saadiyat Beach have combined with the Abu Dhabi National course to catapult the city to a level on a par with Dubai. Here, we feature a selection of the best courses in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah with short course descriptions and contact details.

POLLUTANT LOVING PLANT

PLASTIC SEA BRICKS

STARBUCK TRIALS RECYCLABLE CUPS

Air pollution is a problem most cities face but there are some plants that can be incredibly helpful in the fight. Researchers in Europe believe they may have found a super plant that’s proving even better at sucking up pollution. A type of honeysuckle plant has shown in tests that it is able to reduce pollution even more. Researchers from the AMS Institute, MyEarth, and Wageningen UR are looking at this “Green Junkie’s” craving for carbon dioxide.

The problem of plastic ocean waste is a big one and many creative people are working on cleaning it up. Finding ways to reuse the plastic collected from the ocean is a major stumbling block but ByFusion has responded with a technology that recycles ocean plastic into durable construction blocks. This way, the plastic waste can be permanently reused rather than being turned into disposable plastic items that might one day end up back in the ocean.

In the UK, only one in every 400 paper coffee cups is recycled. Leading coffee store Starbucks is partnering with Frugalpac to help combat this wasteful dilemma. The trial could lead to the use of these Earth-friendly containers in franchises all over the world as it is estimated that roughly 58 billion paper cups end up in landfills or are incinerated each year.

This particular plants has plenty of “hairs” that take in pollutants naturally, but MyEarth has developed a special organic fertilizer to increase the number of plant hairs and thus increase pollution intake. AMS Institute has so far funded the plant’s development and together the two groups are collaborating with Wageningen UR to begin testing the Green Junkie on Amsterdam city streets.

The technology is based on a genius idea from New Zealand-based inventor Peter Lewis. His process involves a modular platform that compresses plastic debris into blocks based on custom settings. The result is called RePlast, the company’s name for the recycled plastic building material. The RePlast system is portable, designed to run on gas or electric, and doesn’t require the plastic to be sorted or washed.

Frugalpac, founded by engineer Martin Myerscough, aims at providing a better alternative to conventional paper cups. Frugalpac feature a thin, plastic liner lightly glued inside a 100 percent recycled paper cup. They claim recycling centres can easily separate and recycle the material. A Starbucks spokesman said, “We are very interested in the cup and we will be testing it to see if it meets our standards for safety and quality, with a view to trialling its recyclability.”

WIND POWER OVERTAKES NUCLEAR

SUPER POWERED BUSES

FUTURISTIC FLOATING HOME

Wind energy has officially overtaken nuclear power as the most affordable energy option in countries near the North Sea. In some European nations, the cost of wind is now 30 percent lower than nuclear, a promising development in the push for renewable energy. At the rate of present installations, industry group WindEurope predicts these wind farms will generate a full 7 percent of all energy within Europe by 2030.

Flash charging for electric buses is now a reality. After a successful pilot project, company ABB has won a contract from Geneva Public Transport to deliver the revolutionary technology, which will change urban transit as we know it. With the new flash-charging technology, green e-buses in the Swiss city will be charged in a mere 15 seconds.

If you prefer views of blue waters rather than green lawns, you’ll love the WaterNest 100, an ecological floating habitat. Designed by architect Giancarlo Zema and developed by EcoFloLife, this solar-powered floating house offers an attractive and low-impact way to live in harmony with nature. Made of recycled and sustainable materials, the unit is 98% recyclable and can be positioned in any large and calm body of water.

While falling wind power costs only represent a small part of the global energy market, there’s no reason other regions can’t build up a similar capacity. China has built so many solar and wind facilities that it’s already on track to exceed its own emissions targets by 2020. However, wind power is developing at a slower pace in the US but hopes are that new turbine designs could fuel huge growth in America.

Geneva’s Line 23, which runs between suburbs and the airport, will be the first route to welcome 12 new buses as well as 13 flash-charging stations. When buses connect with charging points they will receive a 600-kilowatt boost in just 15 seconds. The buses, which can serve over 10,000 people daily, are expected to save up to 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide every year. Plus, as they are silent, the buses will greatly reduce city noise pollution.

The 1,000-square-foot floating pod-shaped home is constructed from recycled glued laminated timber and a recycled aluminum hull. The wooden roof is topped by a 60-square-metre photovoltaic array capable of generating 4 kWp. Four skylights flank both sides of the photovoltaic array, while large windows and balconies wrap around the unit to allow users to enjoy views of the water. The floating pod could also be used as an office, lounge bar, restaurant or shop.

Dear Golfing Members, After the EGM last month, I am pleased to report that the construction of the sport pavilion project will be underway by the end of this year. However, it is with regret that members will experience some inconvenience as the old club house will be taken down. The club management has already planned and taken necessary measures to reduce this inconvenience. Some rearrangements of service facilities will be made to accommodate this changes. The starter box will be moved next to the 10th tee. The golf committee would like to ensure Members that golf course and driving range services will not be affected. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. In the past month, the Golf Committee also had a thorough review on handicap issues that have been raised. It is recommended that golfing Members submit their score for every round that they have played such that the handicap remains current. RBSC uses the TGA handicap system, which is licensed from the USGA. Members can submit their score through www.tga.or.th or hand it to the starter who will happily submit the score for you. However, it is still the responsibility of each golfer to ensure that the score is correctly submitted. The correct handicap is essential for fair play and it is required for tournament play at RBSC. The Golf Committee would like to congratulate Khun Khanet Sudhinaraset on his win, once again, in this year St. Amory Cup. We look forward to seeing more participation from new Members and new winners in many tournaments to come. Finally, the Golf Committee would like to sincerely thank those Members whom participated in the Intraport match with RTN as this has helped us consolidate our good relationships that have been going strong for a long time. We welcome suggestions from all Members such that we can improve our facilities to meet the required standard. Above all, we wish you good health and enjoy golfing at RBSC. The Asavapati Trophy 2016 was won by Dr. Rattachat Mongkolnavin and Prae Wongprecha who defeated Korn Chatikavanij and Jittakarn Lamsam in the 36 hole final by a score of 6/5. 16 teams took part in the qualifying round and all of them qualified for the match play portion. The format of the tournament is a team comprising of one Man and one Lady playing alternate shots off a combined handicap. The winning team had shot a 10 under par on the second day of the Mixed Team event held in the June and their good form carried over to this event. Dr. Rattachat said “This was our third time playing together as partners and our first time to win. I had a big advantage in that my partner is a long hitter. My partner improved in all areas of her game each time we played together and this time we really fit well.” In the first round Dr. Rattachat and Prae had a tough match and won by sudden death, though after that they had an easier time. Korn and Jittakarn put up a good show coming back from 5 down to level the match by the 22nd hole but in the end couldn’t keep up with the winning team. RBSC MAGAZINE

The St Amory Cup was played over the weekend of 6th and 7th August with the first day seeing some very good scoring, especially from Jakkapong Sangmanee, who shot a stunning net 60 to lead Khanet Sudhinaraset by 1 shot. Last year Khanet resumed playing golf after taking a break of 20 years and immediately won his first trophy at the Club by taking the Golf Captain’s Prize. On the second day, he managed to play a steady round of net 68 to win by 2 strokes and collect his second trophy. Commenting on his stellar display, Khanet said, “I didn’t play so well on the first 9 but managed to play better on the second 9. I was playing with some low handicappers on the second day and, as a result, I felt the pressure as they were both hitting many greens.” Korn Chatikavanij, meanwhile, continued his good tournament form of late by shooting a 62 on the second day to tie Jakkapong for second place. The runner-up position was decided by a sudden death playoff in which Jakkapong emerged victorious.

LADIES GOLF CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE Dear Lady Golf Members, As the nation geared up to celebrate Mother’s Day on 12th August, twenty-four talented lady golfers took to the RBSC course on Tuesday, 2nd August to compete for the coveted H.M. The Queen’s Birthday Cup. After some excellent play in tough conditions, Jittakarn Lamsan and I found ourselves leading the tournament, having both scored rounds of 63. However, on day two Chindarat Krauvanichkit kept her cool to steal in and win the tournament by one shot from Montatip Chandra-Chamnong and Jittakarn. My sincere congratulations go to the top three players on their performances and to the other ladies who took part. With the Rio Olympics now in full-swing, I, along with millions of other sports-loving Thais have been glued to my television cheering on our sportsmen and women as they compete at the highest level in their chosen disciplines. At the time of going to press, Thailand had won two gold medals, one silver, and one bronze, all in weightlifting. This bodes well for the Kingdom’s medal haul as we still have strong competitors in badminton, boxing, cycling, rowing, and golf. I would like to remind all lady members to come and participate in this month’s Pol. Gen. Chamras Cup on Monday, 12th September. A large field represents a healthy golf section, so I hope to see many of you bright and early on the Monday morning. I’d also recommend you take a look at this month’s Golf Tips with Pro Bill, if you feel your game needs a little nudge. In the meantime, keep enjoying and improving your golf game and I hope to see you out on the course! Netrnapis Tangtrongvattana Ladies’ Golf Captain

This prestigious tournament is seen as one of the most important of the year and lifting the trophy is a highlight for any lady golfer. At the end of play on the first day, Jittakarn Lamsam and Netrnapis Tangtrongvattan sat atop the leader board, both having carded blistering rounds of 63. They were followed by a clutch of players on 66. However, the second day saw the leaders slip down the order with rounds of 72 and 73 respectively. That left the door open for Chindarat Krauvanichkit, who added a fine 68 to her first round score of 66 to post a winning score of 134. First runner-up Montatip Chandra-Chamnong finished one shot behind on 135 (66-69), and pipped 2nd runner-up Jittakarn, also on 135 (63-72), thanks to her 5 handicap. SEPTEMBER 2016

JUNIORS SHINE AT SUMMER GOLF TOURNAMENT

The RBSC’s annual Summer Golf Tournament for juniors, held on Monday, 25th July 2016, attracted a field of 26 players split into three age categories. Because of the hot weather, the Under 10’s played only 9 holes and it was young Phalat Tejavibulya who coped best with the challenging conditions to win with a score of 48. The 10-12 years old bracket was won by Gunn Pongsivapai with a very creditable score of 85, while Putt Sarajoti shot a blistering 67 to win the 13-15 years old flight. However, the undoubted highlight of the round was a stunning hole-in-one by Muangthong

RBSC MAGAZINE

Tangitvet at the 8th hole. “In the 17 years I have been organizing Junior Golf at the RBSC there has never been a hole-in-one,” said Club pro Bill Hutton. “It is a rare feat and so my congratulations go to ‘Thames’ Tangitvet on his wonderful ace.” The Club’s junior players will have the chance to emulate Thames later this year at the Junior Club Championship scheduled for Sunday, 18th September, and the quarterly Junior Tournament on Monday, 17th October. Those interested in taking part can contact Pro Bill at 081148-7482 for event information and to register.

66 GOLF TIPS WITH PRO BILL

Pic1: Practice making divots on grass

2KE 4GOGODGT C Ć‚UV QH URCEG QHH VJG KPPGT NGHV thigh for hands when addressing the ball

Pic3: For driver, tee the equator of the ball up level with the top edge of the club head

Pic4: Remember LOW

Pic5: Remember SLOW

Pic6: Remember STRAIGHT & WIDE

A FEW LITTLE THINGS TO THINK ABOUT Some general golf tips to improve your game Pic7: Practice distance control to improve your putting

‌Go on the grass and practice making divots that are left of center of your stance. They should be pretty straight, not too deep, and rectangular in shape. (pic 1) ‌When addressing a golf ball, make sure there’s about a â€˜ďŹ st’ of space between your hands and the inside of your left thigh. (pic 2) ‌When teeing up a ball with your driver, the equator (middle) of the golf ball should be at the top edge of the club head. (pic 3)

‌You cannot think when trying to hit a golf ball, but you can think during your practice swing. Four good words to think about when practicing your backswing are – LOW, SLOW, STRAIGHT & WIDE. The mind must be clear when you swing at the ball. Trust your feel. Imagine where you want the ball to go. (pics 4, 5 & 6 in sequence) ‌The most important thing in putting is distance control – direction is secondary. Practice learning how to roll a ball 10 feet, 15 feet, 20 feet. Your putting will improve dramatically. (pic 7)

HEALTHY MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE

A

The benefits of a healthy diet are fully understood by nutritionists and for millions of people that live close to the Mediterranean Sea, the distinct cuisine provides a wholesome lifestyle choice. This month, RBSC’s elite chefs will be teasing the taste buds of Members as they bring a little touch of the region’s cuisine to our dining tables. First up is a fresh tomato salad with imitation abalone and tobiko (fish roe), the perfect start to any meal as tomatoes are rich in vitamins (A, C, and K), as well as other minerals, while the tobiko possess incredible amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids. With four main courses to choose from, Members are certainly spoiled for choice with options covering duck, pork, and fish. Let’s start with the Fennel-Scented Duck Breasts with Truffle balsamic essence, served with Capo nata ricetta, Celery Root Puree, and drizzle. Also of

interest is the Medallion of Pork-Pisto and Tots Mushroom sauce, which is served with Spanish ratatouille and potato tots. From the ocean, there is Pan Roasted Flounder and Salmon with Garlic tapenade, served with boiled potato and cabbage roll à l’ancienne or the Mediterranean grilled yellow fin tuna with rouille sauce. The herb marinated tuna is served with haricot vert, roasted tomatoes, black olives, mushroom, cucumber relish, and chips. Two fantastic desserts complete this month’s menu with the Coffee Raisin Cake, a nicely balanced cake that’s not too sweet but is packed with raisins. Or, if you like a dessert that serves up a tangy taste, how about the Orange Mousse, an orange dessert that makes the perfect end to the meal.

CHEESY COMBOS

A

Around the world, there are more than 1,750 different types of cheese that are produced from ten milk-producing animals – from buffalo to yak – and billions of people enjoy this dairy product on a daily basis. For this month’s food promotion at RBSC Polo Club, Members are invited to sample several main courses that have a different flavoured cheese as their core ingredient. But before we delve into cheesy matters, why not try a sample of the fabulous Hors d’oeuvers such as onion rings wrapped in bacon, spicy Thai cockle salad or salmon yum to get your meal off to a great start. All three have distinct flavours and textures, but the cockle and salmon dishes are sure to add a touch of spiciness to any meal. The cheesy options include cheesy fries with cheese sauce and the Monte Cristo sandwich, a variation of the French croque-monsieur. The cheese-based specials on offer include the tantalizing French classic dish Chicken Cordon Bleu, a juicy Pork Chop Mainara with Cheese, Baked Cod Fish RBSC MAGAZINE

with Cheese, and the lighter but no less delicious Cheese Sticks with tangy sauce. Rounding out the main courses is the fabulous Grilled River Prawn Thermidor, a modern take on the legendary lobster thermidor. For dessert, add a little sweetness to your life with fragrant menu items French Toast Sticks with ice cream and Fruit Salad in a Chocolate Bowl or a deliciously light Panna Cotta. The soft, moist French toast boasts a buttery aroma of cinnamon and vanilla and is served with vanilla ice cream, while the panna cotta is topped with a fresh strawberry. To refresh your palette after your cheesy feast, relax with a refreshing cup of Matcha green tea in four varieties: Matcha hot latte, Matcha iced latte, hot Matcha, and iced Matcha.
