traddling the banks of the River Mersey, the City of Liverpool was ideally situated to profit from the UK’s Industrial Revolution. At one point in recent history, Liverpudlians were at the centre of the British Empire and the hundreds of thousands of workers employed on the city’s multiple docks loaded and unloaded ships that brought riches from the furthest corners of the globe. The golden years of Liverpool as a city of commerce, international shipping, and as a starting point for those seeking a fresh start in the New World, could not last forever and the decline in the British Empire also sounded the death knell for the city’s lifeblood; its famous docks. As other nations rose to challenge British dominance, the fate of Liverpool was sealed. For many decades, the city and its once thriving river frontage lay in ruins, slowly decaying both financially and physically. After the Second World War, the wharfs and much of the city’s centre were in ruins. As the largest port on the west

paid a heavy price as a target for bombing. In fact, Liverpool was the most heavily bombed urban area outside central London.

MARCH 2017

41

But no matter the damage inflicted on the populace, the spirit of Liverpool continued to shine through. The Scouse sense of adventure, humour, and spirit was undiminished. It would take a music revolution to put the city of Liverpool back on the front pages and the 1960s provided just the catalyst for such an event to happen. In America, Rock ‘n Roll was being driven by Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis – to name but a few of the stars. This explosion in music soon made its way across the Atlantic, and naturally its first port of call was Liverpool. Not far from the once bustling Liverpool docks, nondescript Matthew Street would soon become the centre of the music world. Lined with small pubs and bars, local musicians would play cover versions of the American Rock ‘n Roll hits to adoring fans. But the teenagers of Liverpool craved their own distinct music style – much like their loveable Scouse accent – and four young local lads were ready to provide this musical elixir. Formed in early 1960, The Beatles that the world knows and loves, were driven primarily by John Lennon. As a teenager, Lennon first recruited Paul McCartney and then George Harrison to join his nascent band, which was originally called The Quarrymen. After one or two name and line-up changes, The Beatles were completed in the summer of 1962 when Ringo Starr replaced Pete Best on drums. Now, the world started to dance to a new sound; The Mersey Beat.

42

RBSC MAGAZINE

Alongside The Beatles driving the Mersey Beat were other famous bands of the day such as Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Searchers, and songstress Cilla Black. But it was The Beatles who were really making waves and creating their own identity. Soon Beatlemania would define the group and in a few short years they went from playing gigs to hundreds in the Cavern Club in Matthew Street to tens of thousands in huge stadiums all over the world. As the group’s music grew in sophistication, with songwriters Lennon and McCartney penning nearly every song, the band started to take on another layer of maturity and in many ways became representatives of the 1960s counterculture revolution. From good clean living boys in the ‘Swinging Sixties’, by the 1970s The Beatles were experimenting with psychedelic drugs and this became evident in their music and lyrics. After a decade of spearheading the music world, The Beatles imploded and broke up. Many fans pin the blame for this on Yoko Ono, but in fact it was due more to each of the members desire to experiment with their own musical tastes and solo careers. For instance, George Harrison became interested in Indian music while John Lennon’s solo music became more and more introspective. It was left to Paul McCartney to maintain The Beatles’ lifeblood of so many years; pop music.

MARCH 2017

44

RBSC MAGAZINE

That each of the band members went on to have successful solo careers is testament to their musical talents. However, the death of John Lennon in December 1980 and of George Harrison in November 2001 meant that Liverpool’s most famous sons would never again perform in the city they loved and which loved them. However, their legacy lives on and over the decades Liverpool has remained a catalyst for British music with new bands bringing their own sounds to the world. In fact, the Guinness Book of Records declared Liverpool “City of Pop” in 2001 due to the many number one records its musicians have produced. In 2008, World Museum Liverpool, in partnership with the Institute of Popular Music at the University of Liverpool, created “The Beat Goes On”, an in-depth exhibition charting the history of music in Liverpool from 1945 to the present day. Visitors to Liverpool today can still get a feel for the Mersey Beat with a visit to Matthew Street where the Cavern Club still rocks to the sound of The Beatles every day. Alternatively, for a real trip down memory lane, visitors shouldn’t miss the chance to visit The Beatles Story Exhibition located at the Albert Dock.

GLOBAL UPDATE

WATER DILEMMA

The world has wrestled with the issue of clean water access for centuries, but what happens when it’s available, but too expensive to buy? That’s the very situation one third of Americans will soon face, according to a new study published in January. PLOS.org revealed water bills could skyrocket from 11.9 percent to 35.6 percent in five years just as World War II-era water infrastructure is expected to break down. The issue is already impacting millions of people according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Many families in Mississippi make under US$32,000 (Bt1.1 million) a year and

bills soon, while in Detroit, 50,000 homes have had their water services terminated. Private water companies haven’t been able to solve the issue either – in Atlanta people pay a private company $325.52 every month.

ROCKET TRAIN Transportation that moves close to the speed of sound could be a reality in South Korea before too long. The country’s government-run Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) is working on its own super-speedy Hyperloop-esque train that could travel as fast as 1,000 kilometres per hour and they say it will be ready in the “not-too-distant future.” South Korea’s near-supersonic train could rocket travellers between Seoul and Busan, a trip that currently three hours, in a snappy half hour. A KRRI spokesperson said, “We hope to create an ultra-fast train, which will travel inside a state-of-the-art low-pressure tube at lighting speeds, in the not-too-distant future. To that end, we will cooperate with associated institutes as well as Hanyang University to check the viability of various related technologies called the hyper-tube format over the next three years.”

EXERCISE WITHOUT INJURY Regular exercise and sporting activities play important roles in a healthy lifestyle. But improper techniques and lack of preparation can put even the most active people at risk for serious injuries.

TREATING AN INJURY When muscle tissue is torn, blood from the tear can result in painful swelling in and around the injured area. If you experience swelling, you should perform a series of first aid techniques known as RICE, an acronym for these four procedures:

Rest - Helps limit movement that can worsen the injury Ice - Applied to the area reduces swelling and helps stop

Among its many benefits, regular exercise helps prevent injuries by increasing the body’s flexibility and endurance, allowing the body to safely take on more intense exercise. But when pushed beyond its limit, the body tends to make the kinds of harmful movements that cause the majority of injuries. That’s why it’s important to exercise regularly at a pace and intensity that’s right for you.

BEFORE AND AFTER It’s important to stretch your muscles, and warm up before and cool down after exercise. Warming up increases the amount of blood flow to muscles and tendons, which makes them more elastic. This prepares your body properly for your exercise regimen. Your muscles and tendons will be more flexible after exercise; stretching as you cool down is a way to further enhance that flexibility and prepare the body for your next workout.

Compression - Means applying pressure to the area (or wrapping with a cloth or bandage) to help stop the bleeding Elevation - Means raising the injured area above the rest of the body as a way to reduce swelling

If the pain subsides after performing RICE, it’s usually not necessary to see your doctor. But if the pain persists or worsens, you should seek medical attention to help prevent possible permanent damage that can result from your injury. Even bleeding from a common muscle pull can damage otherwise healthy tissue.

The bottom line: While there’s no such thing as a risk-free sport or exercise regimen, the far greater danger to good health — even from simple daily activities — comes from a sedentary lifestyle.

GOLF CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE

Dear Golfers, so happy, topic. Since 2013, the Golf Section has incurred a deficit of over Baht 1 million per year. This has been mainly due to reduced income from a declining number of active golf players over the years and a drop in participation in golf tournaments, and has been exacerbated by the higher costs of entertainment expenses for both Interport and Intraport matches. To address this increasingly urgent issue, the Golf Committee would like to implement the following changes: (1) Limit the number of Intraport players to only 40 people per team. (2) All players over 70 years of age, previously exempted from paying fees, will now have to contribute as well. (3) We will try to find some additional income from organizing a tournament once a year with sponsors, to be held on a Monday morning. On 18-19 February, 2017, we had a successful Interport tournament with SICC. Congratulations to the RBSC golfers, who won both the Nibhon Wilairat Trophy and the Merlion Trophy. But I must request all RBSC golfers to be punctual, and to dress appropriately for future tournaments. Please wear only the designated RBSC golf shirt during the round, and please do not come to the functions dressed in shorts or slippers. You all represent the Royal Bangkok Sports Club.

Pulrit Praneeprachachon Captain of Golf RBSC

We are currently working on many things, and I hope to have more good news for you in the next issue.

uphakit Charoenkul won his first major tournament at the RBSC by taking home this year’s Club Championship trophy. Played without handicap, the Club Championship takes place over a number of weeks, beginning with two days of stroke play qualifying. The top 16 players from

qualifying move on to the subsequent rounds, which are played under match play format. The semi-finals and final are contested over 36 holes. Played concurrently and following the same format are the RBSC Chairman’s Cup competition and

the Senior Club Championship, which is limited to one day of qualifying followed by match play rounds and an 18-hole final round. Jonathan Sill retained his Senior Club Championship trophy of last year by beating Dr. Somphob Intaraprasong by a comfortable margin of 5&4. MARCH 2017

The Chairman’s Cup went to Vichai Srisakulyanon who defeated Dr. Ketchayong Skowratananont in a close fought match by 2&1 in the 36-hole final. Vichai lost the first hole but after that was never down in a see-saw match that saw him 1 up after 18 and all square after 29 holes. This was Vichai’s second Chairman’s Cup win following his victory in 1993. Suphakit was playing in the Club Championship for only the second time and in the final he faced his friend and

regular playing partner Vasin Savangsopakul winner of the RBSC Cup in December 2016. Vasin said, “Khun Poy was putting very well and never let me get in front during the entire final.” Unlike Vasin, who defeated his match play opponents by a comfortable margin, Suphakit had a tough path to the final, meeting previous winners of both the Championship and the Kings Cup in the early rounds. He said, “My semi-final match was particularly close and I feel very fortunate to have got through and to have won the final against a very tough opponent.”

LADIES GOLF CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE Dear Lady Golf Members, On Tuesday, 7th February 2017, our lady golfers gathered for the start of HM Queen Rambhai Barni Cup, one of the most important Ladies Golf events of the year. Her Majesty Queen Rambhai Barni was a pioneer of Ladies Golf in Thailand and played at the RBSC, so it is a major honour for those who win this magnificent trophy. Staged over the course of two weeks, the cup culminated in the final round on Tuesday, 21st February and we will bring you the results in the next issue of RBSC Magazine. In other Section news, we had our annual golf outing to Chantaburi on 27-28 February and enjoyed two days of pleasurable golf at the Khao Soi Dao Golf course. I would like to thank everyone at Khao Soi Dao Golf Club for such an excellent reception, and all the ladies who managed to spare a little time out of their busy business and social calendars to make the trip. The 54th RBSC Family Day was also held last month and as usual the Ladies Golf Section was happy to welcome old and new members to our booth. With the construction of the new sports pavilion well underway, unfortunately we were unable to organize our regular putting green challenge, but we made up for it with a fun-filled chipping and driving activity at the driving range for support this year and we hope to see you all again soon. Happy Golfing!!

GOLF TIPS WITH PRO BILL

GO LOW! - WHEN HITTING INTO THE WIND OR ESCAPING OUT FROM UNDER TREES -

First of all, when you need to hit your ball lower take a club with less loft, like a 3 or 5 wood or a 5 iron.

Move the ball back in your stance like this

Secondly, move the ball further back in your stance (more towards your right foot). The further back you play the ball, the lower the flight.

66

RBSC MAGAZINE

Shorten your backswing

Shorten your follow through

Thirdly, shorten your backswing and your follow through. This will reduce some of the power. Remember, the higher and harder you swing, the higher the ball goes.

Grip down on the club handle

A fourth thing you should do is grip down on the club handle to make the club shorter. This will also give you more control of your swing.

Keep hands ahead of the clubhead as you swing through the ball

Try to keep your left wrist bowed like this

Finally, when making your swing, try to keep your hands ahead of the clubhead as you hit the ball. You should also keep your left wrist more ‘bowed’.

BRAISING AND STEWING PROMOTION Braising and stewing are two cooking methods that are very popular in the West, especially northern Europe. However, here in Asia we’re used to calling this method of cooking pot roasting. And while braising is similar to stewing, the two cooking methods do have some slight differences. Both are moist heat, slow cooking methods that tenderize the meat to develop a rich flavour. However, braising uses large cuts of meat or poultry, while in a stew the meat is cut evenly. The chefs at RBSC kitchens have brought two of the most popular stews to the menu this month with stewed chicken Moroccan style, a slowly cooked chicken and pepper stew served with mashed potato and Beef stew with Gnocchi. Both are hearty dishes that are perfect for either lunch or dinner.
