CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

Nigel Oakins Chairman

Dear Members, The RBSC magazine cover this month shows First Vice-Chairman General Suebsan Dardarananda presenting a 1 million Baht donation to the Prime Minister. The donation was made on behalf all RBSC Members to assist those impacted by the horrendous flooding caused by excessive rainfall in the South of the country recently. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha made an appeal for donations following the concerns expressed by His Majesty the King that all should come together to assist fellow Thais in this time of dire need. The General Committee acted swiftly to agree to a suitable donation

that would reflect on the wishes of all Members of the Club. At the same time we send our best wishes to the people working in rescue and support operations, helping to get those affected back to normal life. While on the subject of charitable donations, we have once again embarked on a blanket donation campaign to assist those in the Northern provinces impacted by lower winter temperatures. General Committee member Satish Seghal led the initiative and was joined by fellow GC members, Maj. Pansuang Xumsai Na Ayudhya, Mr. Anil Tanwani and Mr. Brian Brooks. Individually they travelled to six provinces to hand over the blankets. You can read more about this programme on page 22. On the F&B front, a new Head Chef, Khun Thanit Changchai, has recently joined us. With experience from top hotels, he has been ensuring that best practices are followed at the Club. Members may have enjoyed some of the innovative items introduced on the menu in recent weeks, dishes that have received a good deal of

positive feedback. Eric Hudson, F&B Convenor, tells me the main aim is to improve efficiencies in service and choice, as well as the quality and presentation of offerings. If you had not noticed, the Winning Post lunch buffet has been extremely popular of late - even more so with the introduction of a 50% discount for Members aged 65 and over. The success of this promotion is such that it is likely to be extended for another few months. Members are encouraged to make reservations as seating is invariably full. The Club’s wine offerings are also being reviewed and Members can expect to see some positive changes by the end of the first quarter. Finally, following the fantastic success of the new retail outlet for Club souvenirs at the RSC building, we are looking for a suitable place at the RBSC Polo Club to replicate this initiative. If there are items you would like to see added to the product range, then please do let our managers know.

GM’S PERSPECTIVE Russell Blagg General Manager

Dear Members, As you are no doubt aware, flash floods in southern Thailand following persistent heavy rains throughout January have wreaked havoc in many areas. The flooding, which reached roof-height in some cases, has adversely impacted millions of people. To help in their recovery, the RBSC has made a donation of Baht 1,000,000 which was presented to Prime Minister Prayuth Chan O-Cha by General Suebsan Dardarananda and Khun Satish Sehgal at the Government House on Sunday, 15th January 2017.

12

RBSC MAGAZINE

Further charitable efforts by many people from the Club in January enabled the contribution of blankets to offer protection from the colder climate to people living in 6 northern provinces, The blankets were distributed by General Committee members to residents in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Loei, Nongkhai, and Ubon Ratchathani. This month the Club will resume some of the regular events that make up our entertainment programme, including the Chill Night event at the RBSC Polo Club and the Special Club Night and Weekly Club Nights at the RBSC. The RBSC will also host a Ballroom Dance “Love is Black” event at the Henri Dunant Hall in February. Please visit our website www.rbsc.org for more on this and details of other functions taking place in the near future.

The project to build the new Sports Pavilion is well underway. Following the demolition of the old Golf House, the pilings for the foundations of the new facility were completed a little earlier than scheduled in early January and the substructure work began in the middle of the month with excavations for the basement level. We will keep you updated on progress. Following promotions for lunch at the Winning Post buffet, please be reminded to book early to avoid disappointment. Many function rooms of differing dimensions are available to accommodate your requirements, all at very attractive rates and packages. Please contact Banqueting Services for more information.

The number of victims of the flood disaster in southern Thailand continues to rise as the flood situation continues in 6 provinces. LIFESTYLE - TRAVEL

AMSTERDAM

I AM AMSTERDAM TEXT & PHOTOS: MURRAY JONES

O

f all the cities in Northern Europe, my choice for the title of ‘Venice of the North’ would have to go to Amsterdam. This city of canals, cafes, and cobbled streets is nothing short of a traveller’s paradise with something for every taste. Amsterdam is known globally for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system, and narrow houses with gabled facades; all legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age.

The main tourist attractions are all within easy walking distance from the iconic Centraal Station and include Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt House Museum, Dam Square, the Heineken Experience, and, of course, Amsterdam’s famous red light district in the old town. Furthermore, dotted around the city are pockets of high-end shopping districts and numerous markets featuring bric-a-brac stalls.

The iconic Dam Square with the Royal Palace.

But to really get a flavour of the city, a one-hour canal trip is the best option. Try catching a boat at the many piers located at Damrak close to the Centraal Station. From here the boats loop around the city and the guided tour is offered in 11 languages, including Thai. Some of the boat services allow ticket holders to jump on and off at certain points around the city, so check in advance if your tour offers this option. From the top of Damrak looking towards the city with Centraal Station at your back, the city of Amsterdam is laid out in front of you and from this vantage point you’re certain to get a wonderful snapshot of the famous narrow houses, canals, and a few cyclists. Grab an early morning latte at one of the many cafes that line the busy Damrak

and take a seat on the elegant boulevard and watch the city come alive. A short walk from Centraal Station is Anne Frank House, a living museum dedicated to the memory of the Jewish wartime diarist Anne Frank. Here you can see the hiding place where Anne Frank and her family, as well as four other people, hid from the Nazis. Also on display is an exhibition on the life and times of Anne Frank. In 2015, the museum drew over a million visitors and became the 3rd most visited museum in the Netherlands, after the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. You can buy tickets in advance from the Anne Frank web site (www.annefrank.org) or wait until 3.30pm to purchase a ticket at the museum’s entrance.

“Some tourists think Amsterdam is a city of sin, but in truth it is a city of freedom. And in freedom, OQUV RGQRNG ƂPF UKP q - John Green, American author.

A stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle at Anne Frank House is a peaceful monument dedicated to all gay men and lesbians who have been subjected to persecution because of their homosexuality. The Homomonument takes the form of three large pink triangles made of granite and is set into the ground so as to form a larger triangle. One side of the triangle has steps that lead down to the Keizersgracht canal where people come to lay flowers. The wonderful Magna Plaza shopping precinct is nearby and by crossing the three canals you can find a lovely spot for lunch or some retail therapy at one of Amsterdam’s best loved shopping arcades. From here you can easily reach the centuries old Dam Square and the Royal Palace and De Nieuwe Kerk, a 15th century church that today offers high-profile exhibitions on art, photography, and world cultures. During our visit we managed to catch ’90 years of Ms. Monroe’ an exhibition detailing the life and death of the iconic Marilyn Monroe.

If you fancy joining the hundreds of thousands of people who regularly catch one of the many of city-wide trams, now is the time for a short trip to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Heineken Experience. On Damrak catch tramline 16, 24, or 25. You can buy an ‘I Amsterdam’ card (www.iamsterdam. com) for one, two or three days, which also gives you plenty bonus features such as free entry to museums, boat trips, and more, or you can buy a ticket on the tram and get off at the Wetering Circuit roundabout. From this huge roundabout, the museum quarter is only a few minutes walk, while one of Amsterdam’s largest outdoor markets, Albert Cuyp Market and its surrounding streets is also nearby. The museum quarter is home to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum of modern and contemporary art and design, while the Heineken Experience offers visitors the chance to get to know the beer giant a little better with a behind-the-scenes tour.

Of course, no trip to Amsterdam would be complete without a visit to the old town and the red light district. Located close to Damrak and Centraal Station, the red light district has been somewhat tamed by government officials but it still offers visitors a glimpse of the past. A mish-mash of sex shops, ‘coffee shops’, beer bars, and brothels, the colourful neighbourhood is best enjoyed after-dark. For an alternative night on the town try either Rembrandt Square or Spui. Rembrandt Square has been specially developed as a centre for nightlife and is home to the city’s hippest bars, clubs, and restaurants. A hub of activity for both locals and visitors by day and night, Rembrandt Square is the place to go for vibrant nightlife and live music. Spui on the other hand is more cultured and offers an array of restaurants and bars in and around the main square.

GLOBAL UPDATE

OFF-GRID TRAINS In what’s being hailed as a “completely unique” idea that could have a “wide impact with commercial applications on electrified rail networks all over the world,” a new project in the UK could see electric trains powered by trackside solar panels that work independently from the main power grid. Imperial College London has teamed up with climate change charity 10:10 to look into using trackside solar panels to power trains. As part of the project, researchers will investigate connecting solar panels directly to power lines that supply trains, in an effort to bypass the larger power grid and more efficiently manage power demand from trains.

CLEAN APPLE Five years ago, Apple, Facebook, and Google were the first companies to commit to powering their businesses 100 percent with renewable energy, according to Greenpeace. Delving into the carbon footprints of those and other leading technology companies, Greenpeace recently released a report titled “Clicking Clean: Who Is Winning the Race to Build A Green Internet?” Image courtesy www.cleantechnica.com

SOLAR GIANT Tesla recently announced that battery production had started at its Nevada Gigafactory, but the company didn’t mention one major detail: the Gigafactory could be powered by the world’s largest solar rooftop installation. An investor handout revealed a 70-megawatt (MW) solar array along with ground solar panels could enable the massive factory to operate entirely on clean energy.

Greenpeace gave Apple A’s in renewable energy commitment, energy transparency, renewable procurement, and energy efficiency and mitigation. The company’s only B grade was in the advocacy category. Google also received mostly A’s except for a B in energy transparency, but Apple edged out Google on Greenpeace’s clean energy index to be the top winner.

The 70 MW solar array would be around seven times larger than any rooftop arrays currently installed, according to Tesla. The rooftop array currently boasting the title of world’s largest is a 11.5 MW installation in India, while the United States’ biggest rooftop array is a 10 MW array atop a California Whirlpool distribution center. MASSIVE RENEWABLE PROJECT IN CHINA China may still be one of the top polluting countries on the planet, but they’re trying to improve and fast. The country’s National Energy Administration (NEA) has announced an ambitious plan to invest US$361 billion into renewable energy projects between now and 2020. This marks a substantial commitment to the shift away from coal, which has been a primary source of pollution for decades. The NEA said the energy plan calls for investments in wind, hydro, solar, and nuclear power to produce around half of new electricity generation by 2020. Image courtesy www.futurism.com

TOUGH AS STEEL Researchers at MIT have found a way to make one of the world’s strongest materials even stronger. Graphene, a two-dimensional form of carbon that gets its strength from a unique honeycomb structure, has been made even more durable by compressing and fusing it into a 3D sponge-like configuration. The ultralight material has a density of just five percent, but could be as much as 10 times stronger than steel. Although graphene is very expensive, researchers believe the potential applications are nearly endless. The super-strong, lightweight material can be used to create batteries that last essentially forever and can even help solar panels convert more energy into usable electricity.

China’s renewable energy projects are not only an investment in the future of the Earth, but also in the nation’s economy. The NEA estimates the investments will create over 13 million jobs in the energy sector over the upcoming five-year period, which is likely to far surpass the number of jobs eliminated as the country shifts away from its heavy reliance on coal.

TUNNEL TREE NO MORE The Pioneer Cabin Tree in Calaveras Big Trees State Park, California recently succumbed to a winter storm, breaking the hearts of treehuggers everywhere. The majestic sequoia tree, which was tunneled sometime in the 1880’s to allow thousands of people to pass beneath it, came crashing down to earth during a major storm on the 8th January. Calaveras Big Trees Association announced on its Facebook page, “The Pioneer Cabin tree has fallen! This iconic and still living tree – the tunnel tree – enchanted many visitors. The storm was just too much for it.” Trees have died

in the tunneling process, such as Yosemite’s Wawona Tunnel Tree, which was carved in 1881 but fell in 1969. In contrast to the Yosemite landmark which inspired it, the Pioneer Cabin Tree still showed signs of life.

or millennia countless cultures have mined gemstones that are unique to their part of the Earth and, in some cases, shaped and polished these stones into jewellery and sacred amulets. Signifying wealth, power, protection, love, longevity, and hundreds of other meanings, gemstones possess indeďŹ nable properties that are believed to produce magical or miraculous effects such as preventing evil, bringing good fortune, healing wounds, and thwarting illness to name but a few. While most gemstones are of a mineral crystal origin, there are non-mineral exceptions such as pearls, coral, and amber. We know

that the majority of mineral crystals are formed by a naturally occurring combination of physics deep inside the Earth. Here, chemicals, intense heat, and immense pressure work in unison over millions of years to form the gemstones we admire today. Various chemicals are known to affect the shape and colour of crystals in different parts of the world. While it is true to say that most mineral crystals are quite small, sometimes a large and pure stone is found that can be cut and shaped into a glittering object of rare beauty. ASTON MARTIN UPDATE Aston Martin Holdings (UK) Ltd., the producer of luxury hand-crafted sports cars, announced that it would exceed its previous guidance on Adjusted EBITDA (adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) of £85m-£90m for 2016. Aston Martin also said that it anticipates sharply increased adjusted EBITDA for 2017 amid encouraging demand for its new DB11 model.

The improving outlook follows the successful launch of the DB11, which achieved wholesale volumes of a thousand vehicles – in line with company targets for the period following the start of production in August 2016. This update reflects a healthy order bank for the DB11 sports car and continued benefits from the ‘Second Century Plan’ product transformation program.

Dr. Andy Palmer, Aston Martin President and Chief Executive Officer, said: “We are performing ahead of expectations, both in terms of underlying earnings and in meeting our targets for the DB11, special vehicles and the pre-existing product line up. Our lean operating structure, financial discipline, and targeted investment strategy have put us on the path to sustainable profitability.”

ROLLS-ROYCE DAWN TAKES LUXURY CROWN AWARD The Rolls-Royce Dawn has been declared ‘Best Luxury Car’ by an independent panel of top UK journalists at the UK Car of the Year Awards. Comprising a top-calibre group of 27 professional journalists, UKCOTY selects the best cars launched over the past 12 months, from a shortlist of 56 freshly-launched models. Since its introduction to market in March 2016, Dawn has won plaudits globally, including awards from some of the most highly regarded names in luxury and automotive media. Regionally, publications

and web sites such as the Australian Financial Review, Robb Report India, and The Straits Times have similarly extolled the Dawn as the ultimate expression of true luxury open-top touring. “Since its introduction in 2016, Dawn has introduced a highly dynamic new generation of men and women to Rolls-Royce. These patrons of true luxury have been drawn to the most glamorous expression of Rolls-Royce luxury in history,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “Every Rolls-Royce motor car is exquisitely hand-crafted at our centre of excellence in Goodwood, West Sussex. Plaudits like this are a glowing affirmation of the extraordinary skill of the 1,700 men and women engaged in the creation of the ‘Best Cars in the World’.

olfers from the Royal Selangor Club, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia visited the RBSC for the annual Interport Match in December. As was the case last year, a fairly small team of only 12 players came and the RBSC golfers emerged as victors by a score oft 8-4 points. Despite their numbers, the RSC team made excellent guests as they stayed and enjoyed our hospitality at the party after the match. Khun Vichet Bunthuwong

Take notice of how my right foot is perfectly perpendicular to the target line. This will restrict my hips from turning too much on the backswing. Also notice how my left foot is slightly turned out to the left. This makes an easier and more complete hip turn on my finish.

Notice the slight flex in my knees. This helps with turning and weight-shift. You want to bend forward from the hips (about 30˚) and keep your back very straight. My shoulders are nicely lined up to the target. You can see my left forearm. Copy this!

On every shot you want your hands to be hanging just on the inside of your left thigh. Both of my V’s (the line formed between thumbs and forefingers in my grip) are pointing up towards my right shoulder. Keep your nose pointing just behind the ball. All the best players do this.

Lastly, notice how I have my chin up. This helps my shoulders to make a full turn without my head moving too much.
