36 LIFESTYLE - TRAVEL - MANDALAY

Bangkok, Mandalay lies within reach of some of most remarkable archaeological sites in the world that have inspired visitors to Myanmar for nearly a thousand years. Mandalay is the second largest city in Myanmar and sits on the banks of the Irrawaddy River and was founded in 1857 by the last king of the Burmese kingdom, King Mindon. We decided to base ourselves on the edge of town at the Mandalay Hill Resort, a stunning hotel with amazing gardens, swimming pool, and spa. The hotel sits at the bottom of Mandalay hill and on the doorstep of the famous Su Taung Pyai pagoda, the first on our list of stunning tourist attractions. A short drive up the hill leaves you at the modest entrance. All visitors remove their footwear here and continue up a series of escalators (there is also a lift) to the main pagoda and its ancillary pavilion. It is said that Mandalay Hill is the holy hill from which Buddha reportedly predicted that a great religious city would emerge. The original pagoda was built around 1052 by King Anawratha and over the millennia has become known as what our guide called a “wish-granting” pagoda. We were also informed that a hermit once spent 41 years living on the hill and raised substantial funds of major renovations, including Su Taung Pyai itself, where he spent many years. The views from atop are stunning and you can clearly see the city below laid out in all directions with the Irrawaddy River off in the distance. Intricate coloured glass and tiles adorn the entire structure and every arch, wall, and door jump out at you with reflections and bursts of sunshine. Even in mid-July, the temperature on top of the hill is lovely and cool and the day of our visit a gentle breeze made our visit all the more special. As one of Myanmar’s most important cultural centres, Mandalay is home to many craftsmen, many of whom still use traditional skills

and methods. Many side streets are not only their homes but also their workshops and their goods spill out on to uneven pavements. Colourful umbrellas, wooden boats, hand paintings, silver and gold smiths, silk weaving, and vivid tapestry and textiles all vie for space next to food stalls serving a city of over one million inhabitants. In many ways it can be said that Mandalay is still living very much in its past and a visit is rather like stepping back in time. The stunning pagodas, mosaic shrines, dramatic fort with Mandalay Hill as a backdrop, itinerant monks, a wide choice of traditional Burmese food, and the dramatic surrounding countryside with the farmland being framed by the hazy blue Shan mountain range and the mighty Irrawaddy River, all combine to make this one of the most extraordinary parts of Myanmar. The centrepiece of Mandalay is undoubtedly Mandalay Royal Palace, another jewel in the crown of King Mindon. Before the development of Mandalay is 1857, the former royal city was at Amarapura but a devastating war against the British army forced the king to relocate a few miles to the north. To sell the deal to his people, King Mindon reminded them of Lord Buddha’s prophecy that a great city would one day evolve at the foot of Mandalay Hill. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, Amarapura is a now a township of Mandalay and almost every tourist pays a visit here to photograph and be photographed on U Bein Bridge. At over one kilometre long, it is the world’s longest teak footbridge. The construction of Myanmar’s final “royal” city relied heavily on what today might be considered Feng Shui. With input from court astrologers an auspicious date was picked to begin work, the orientation of buildings was carefully studied and implemented, the four corners of city’s walls all faced the cardinal points of the compass, and the 12 gates into the city were marked with a different zodiac sign. Looking at the city on a map it is easy to see a perfect square; each side is exactly 6,666 feet in length. The palace is dominated by a 78 metre high tower known as the “centre of the universe” and is made entirely of wood, much of which came from dismantled palaces of Amarapura. The huge watchtower allowed palace guards to scan the city for fires, but today serves as the perfect viewpoint to take in the breathtaking beauty of Mandalay Royal Palace and the numerous additional buildings. Another stunning religious complex is that of Kuthodaw Pagoda, a huge walled temple at the base of Mandalay Hill with hundreds of white stone-inscribed stupas all perfectly aligned. The central golden stupa stands at an impressive 57 metres and is surrounded 729 mini stupas, each of which is home to a marble slab inscribed with part of the Buddhist Tripitkata. Together they form what is known as the world’s largest book.

An hour’s riverboat trip up the Irrawaddy River brings you to Min Kun or Mingun, depending on which sign you read, and the world famous bell. It’s a short walk from the pier to the bell but there’s several forms of transportation to take you there if you’re feeling tired. A stone tablet informs visitors of the history of the bell and its relevance to other great bells in Moscow and London. In 1808, King Bodawpaya cast the bell for a huge stupa being built. It was the heaviest functioning bell in the world at several times in history, weighing 55,555 viss (90,718 kilograms or 199,999 pounds) easily remembered by the consonants representing the number 5 in Burmese astronomy and numerology. Visitors strike the bell three times before crawling underneath for look inside the giant bell, which can be quite deafening when numerous people are striking the bell simultaneously. A visit to our final temple on this trip required us to wake up at 3am, travel across town, and a sit patiently until just after 4am when monks arrived to unlock the doors to the mesmerizing Mahamuni or Great Sage. This is one of the most venerated images in Myanmar and over the years it has been covered with millions of sheets of gold leaf. Like us, other worshippers arrived at the shrine early in the morning to observe the face-washing ceremony, in which monks ritually bathe the image. Although originally bronze, the image has been covered in over 15 centimeters of gold leaf by devout followers and after the monks have finished cleaning the Buddha image, only males are allowed to climb the frame that surrounds the cast to attach their inscribed golf leaf. Some people say that while the monks cleanse the image, the Buddha’s eyes often open. While I did witness the face-washing ceremony, my eyes were so tired I failed to see much other than my eyelids.

Getting There: Thai Airways, Thai Air Asia, and Bangkok Airways all fly direct to Mandalay from Suvarnabhumi International Airport daily.

HARNESSING A TYPHOON

LET THERE BE LIGHT

THE DESERT RAIN FOREST

An engineer in Japan is looking for a silver lining in the destructive typhoons that regularly drench the island nation. Atsushi Shimizu has invented the world’s first typhoon wind turbine to harness the immense energy of storms as a unique renewable energy source. Shimizu believes that the energy from just one typhoon could power Japan for half a century.

As part of the country’s ongoing bid to invest in renewable energy, China’s state-run utility has inked a deal with US firm BrightSource Energy to build a massive new solar mirror farm. The technology, which uses thousands of mirrors to concentrate sunlight and heat water to power a steam turbine, is the same design used in BrightSource’s Ivanpah power plant outside of Las Vegas.

Dubai’s natural climate is arid and desert-like, but that hasn’t stopped the city from introducing a new ecosystem to wow its tourists. The city-state recently opened The Green Planet, a massive indoor rainforest housed within a 150-foot-tall glass building. The artificial ecosystem is home to more than 3,000 species of plants, insects, and animals, and the centrepiece is the world’s largest artificial tree.

The main advantage of thermal solar plants over traditional solar panel arrays is that they’re able to generate far more power that photovoltaic panels. These power plants can be massive, producing hundreds of megawatts of energy. The plant near Las Vegas produces a whopping 392 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 140,000 homes. Another mirror farm under construction in Morroco, slated to be the world’s largest when complete, will generate 580 megawatts and serve 1.1 million people.

The tree at the heart of the project stands 82-feet-tall and its trunk houses many of the systems that make it possible to recreate a lush rainforest in a desert city. Although the weather outside is often scorching, inside the enormous glass tower it is positively humid. An advanced climate-control system keeps the humidity level at 70% in order to support many of the same lush rainforest plants that would grow in a wild forest.

To that end, Shimizu devised Challenergy, a vertical-axis Magnus wind power generator robust enough to withstand the high winds of a typhoon and wrangle the energy from a massive storm in order to generate electricity. The technology has already received a fair amount of press coverage in Japan, where many people are eager to find ways to produce sustainable energy and find a way to benefit from the storms that cause immense damage with high winds and tidal waves.

BABY AUTOBOTS

JARDINS DE PARIS

Singapore is building a new state-ofthe-art stadium that combines flexibility with energy efficiency. Featuring the world’s largest free-span dome, the Singapore National Stadium is a brilliant engineering feat designed by Arup, and is part of a larger masterplan created in collaboration with DP Architects and AECOM. The versatile design of the new 55,000-seat stadium will allow it to support a wide variety of events throughout the year.

As part of the Toyota Heart Project – a future where humans and artificial intelligence work together for a better world – the company has created Kirobo Mini, a 10cm high “baby” robot that can talk, gesture, and detect and respond to emotions. Developed as a communication partner, Kirobo Mini can hold a basic conversation and is small enough to fit in the palm of the hand. With people spending an average of 4.3 years of their lives in cars, Toyota believes that much can be learnt about our behaviour and emotion while driving.

The city of Paris has just passed a new law that allows anyone to plant an urban garden within the city’s limits. Upon receiving a permit, gardeners can grow plants, flowers, vegetable, and fruit on walls, in boxes, on rooftops, under trees, or on fences. Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo’s goal is to create 100 hectares of living walls and green roofs by the year 2020, with one third of that greenery dedicated to agriculture.

It is the first stadium in the world to host sporting events, concerts, shows, and festivals. The stadium will have the world’s largest free-span dome with a retractable roof that shelters the court from sunlight and rainfall. The roof will feature a network of LED lights that form one of the largest LED displays in the world. Designed specifically for the region’s tropical climate, the structure features an innovative cooling system that significantly reduces energy usage.

Japan is already a leading user of industrial robots with the second-biggest concentration after South Korea, according to the International Federation of Robotics. Newer technologies are helping AI’s to better interact with humans, which means robots have begun moving beyond factory floors into homes, offices, shops, hospitals, and now cars.

The city asked residents to get creative with where they grow plants, and it will contribute a “planting kit” with seeds and topsoil. They say they’ve offered a few suggestions, but mainly hope people will use their imagination for where they might be able to green the city. Paris city officials hope the law will improve the quality of life for city dwellers and boost the beauty of the city.

CREATING THE FUTURE TODAY For almost two decades, Jérôme Pernici, Commercial & Marketing Director at Patek Philippe, has had his finger on the pulse of the worldwide watchmaking industry. In all those years, the eloquently spoken representative of what is considered by many to be the most prestigious watch brand in the world has seen the preferences of many collectors gradually coalesce into a uniformed appreciation of the craftsmanship and technical developments applied by a team of dedicated engineers in the Swiss city of Geneva.

When a marque of Patek Philippe’s prestige looks to expand its business, the company seeks out what it considers it best potential partners and in Thailand that responsibility has fallen to TKI Perpetual Company Limited. Under the capable stewardship of Phumiphan Bunjapamai, TKI Chairman, new customers in Thailand are learning about timepieces that over the centuries have been worn by Pope Pius IX and Queen Victoria, while existing customers continue to be wooed by a rich history of technical innovation.

“In the Middle East there used to be a lot of demand for jewellery set watches, while in Asia we often sold more white gold than in Europe where yellow gold was preferred. These preferences have slowly disappeared. However, in terms of product expectations and product feel, all our markets are very similar. The Thai market is slightly different as we have some of our most dedicated collectors; some with the most amazing collections,” says Pernici.

“There is a clear trend in technology and style with the younger generation and, while we don’t want to be too conservative in terms of styling, we have decided not to develop any kind of connected watches. Instead we will develop something in the middle contemporary to attract younger clients, such as our Nautilus and Aquanaut collections, which are both sporty and elegant and appeal to younger clients. The Nautilus can be a very nice first step towards our brand before a new customer looks at more complicated pieces.

“For over 40 years, Thai people have collected Patek Philippe watches because in Thai culture artisanship has always been extremely important, and this has created an appreciation for what Patek Philippe has been doing in terms of craftsmanship and technical development. The Stern family, who own the brand, has always had a close connection to Thailand and we feel there is a huge, untapped potential here for Patek Philippe.”

“Part of the reason we stay ahead of our competitors is because everything we do is focused on product development; our product is at the centre of everything. To be honest, there’s not a day goes by when we do not have important meetings on new product designs or developments. On top of this, the Stern family is very passionate about watches and watch development. Mr. Thierry Stern travels extensively and meets with many

collectors and he listens to our clients and their expectations. The feedback he gets is passed on to a small group of people in Geneva who work exclusively on product development. “Because the Stern family is financially independent, it can decide if it wants to invest in some form of new technologies. This puts us one step ahead of the competition. We don’t do long marketing or consumer studies; it’s about feeling, listening, and understanding our clients and then turning this into a product that will speak to them some thing positive. While we listen to our clients’ requests, we don’t it’s not with a view to make commissioned watches timepieces. We use this information to give us orientation on future watches,” Pernici adds. “The objective is to get better accuracy for watches and what makes Patek Philippe different is that we still put a lot of emphasis on the size of our movements. We don’t want bulky watches. Creating the smallest movements in the world is a real challenge for our engineers.” BaselWorld remains the most important industry fair in the world for watchmakers and watch aficionados. For Pernici and his colleagues, it is the perfect opportunity to meet their retailers, the international media and those who love to wear the brand. So, the next time you’re at BaselWorld, drop by the Patek Philippe showroom for a glimpse into the future of luxury timepieces.
