As more cancer treatments are now being delivered faster in the province, BC Cancer will be ending its temporary program that was sending some patients to the U.S. for radiation therapy.
“Our priority has always been to ensure that cancer patients have timely access to life-saving treatment while we build and strengthen B.C.’s public health-care system for the long term,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Health.
“By hiring more specialists, upgrading our hospitals, and expanding innovative treatments, B.C.’s 10-Year Cancer Action Plan is working to improve wait times for radiation therapy and meet national benchmarks. Thanks to the progress we’ve made over the past two years, we can now safely wind down this temporary program and focus on getting patients the care they need in B.C.”
Since May 2023, BC Cancer has offered eligible patients the option to travel for radiation therapy treatment at two clinics in Bellingham, Wash., ensuring patients received timely access to life-saving treatment in the short term while investments were made to build B.C.’s capacity for radiation therapy in the province.
As of the end of February 2025, approximately 93% of patients in B.C. were waiting less than four weeks to start their radiation treatment – exceeding the national benchmark of 90%. This is also a 24% improvement since spring 2023, when only 69% of patients were starting treatment within four weeks.
As in-province wait times for cancer treatment have improved over the past
two years, BC Cancer has seen a steady decline in the number of patients choosing to go to the U.S. for their treatment. A total of 1,107 patients have completed radiation therapy in the U.S. through the program to date. At the peak of the program, in fall 2023, there were an average of 50 patients being treated in the U.S. each week.
Based on current participation rates, it is estimated that approximately 104 patients would access the program over the coming year if it were to continue. This represents 0.6% of the 16,900 patients projected to need radiation treatment in 2025-26. However, these patients can be accommodated in B.C. without the need to travel out of country.
The Province appreciates the partnership it has had with the two U.S. clinics contracted to provide care to B.C. patients. BC Cancer’s contracts are set to expire on May 11 and May 31, 2025, and will not be renewed. Nine patients are scheduled to complete their treatment in the U.S. under the program before the end of the contracts.
The Province is expanding cancer care through B.C.’s 10-Year Cancer Action Plan to better prevent, detect and treat cancers today, and to meet growing future need for cancer care. This includes adding regional cancer centres in Nanaimo, Kamloops, Surrey and Burnaby, bringing the total number of cancer centres to 10. Existing centres are in Abbotsford, Kelowna, Prince George, Surrey, Vancouver and Victoria.

More children in B.C. will be riding with confidence as the Province helps to expand the Everyone Rides Grades 4-5 program, giving more students hands-on cycling skills while promoting road safety and active transportation.
“Ensuring the safety of our children while promoting active transportation is a priority for our government,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Transportation and Transit. “By expanding this program, we are giving more kids the skills they need to feel excited and confident about riding their bikes, while encouraging healthier and more sustainable commuting choices for families.”
In the 2024-25 school year, the government is investing an additional $821,500 into the program, bringing the total investment to more than $2 million since its inception. As part of the expansion, two new communities, Kamloops and Southeast Kootenays, will be added in spring 2025. This will allow more students to benefit from hands-on cycling education. The program is already delivered in Metro Vancouver, Capital Regional District, Fraser Valley, Kelowna region, Cariboo region and the West Kootenays.
The Everyone Rides Grade 4-5 program was created by HUB Cycling, a non-profit organization with a history of breaking down barriers to cycling. With support from the Province, the program encourages healthy habits, environmental consideration and safety through cycling education.
Since its launch in 2019, the Everyone Rides Grades 4-5 program has introduced road safety, cycling skill development and active transportation infrastructure to more than 40,000 children in B.C. Now in its sixth year, the program continues to equip young riders with the knowledge and confidence they need to bike safely, and will support an estimated 9,000 children in spring 2025.
“HUB Cycling is committed to connecting communities through education,” said Lorraine Smith, manager of Everyone Rides Grade 4-5. “We believe cycling creates happier, healthier communities. Providing students with the opportunity to learn about active transportation and bike safety can play a big role in raising a generation of sustainable-transportation users.”

Tourism Abbotsford unites with destinations across Canada, celebrating National Tourism
April 7th to April 11th
Week from April 7th to 11th. Themed, Canada: Powered by Tourism, Tourism Abbotsford is celebrating the powerful impact that tourism brings with two new initiatives, Abbywood and Love Local.
“We look forward to welcoming more Canadians and Americans to the Fraser Valley. One of the ways we can reexperience our backyard is through the film tourism initiative, Abbywood, featuring cineventures throughout Abbotsford,” says Clare Seeley, Executive Director of Tourism Abbotsford.
”In support of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association’s Love Local campaign, we also encourage our community to
embrace their Canadian spirit. Participating businesses will have a decal in their windows, but our reach goes beyond the downtown Abbotsford businesses, extending to farms, wineries, breweries, distilleries, retailers, restaurants, cafés, and service providers.”
Tourism is a key economic driver and one of BC’s competitive strengths in the world economy. The most recent statistics released by the Tourism Industry Association of BC (TIABC) and Destination BC (DBC) state that the sector contributed 9.7% towards BC’s GDP, an increase of almost 10% from the previous year. Aside from the economic benefit, tourism also creates enjoyable places to work, visit
and live, fostering a sense of Canadian pride.
To see all that Abbotsford has to offer, visit tourismabbotsford.ca and follow Tourism Abbotsford on Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok.

On April 13, 1699, the Sikh community witnessed a moment that would forever transform its spiritual and social fabric. On that day, during the festival of Vaisakhi, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, founded the Khalsa Panth — a collective body of initiated Sikhs devoted to upholding righteousness, justice, and equality.
This monumental event, which took place at Anandpur Sahib in present-day Punjab, India, remains one of the most important moments in Sikh history, and Vaisakhi is celebrated by millions worldwide in remembrance of it.
A Bold Call to Courage
On that historic day, Guru Gobind Singh Ji gathered thousands of Sikhs for the Vaisakhi festival. In a moment that would test their faith and devotion, he drew his sword and asked for volunteers willing to sacrifice their lives for their beliefs.
One by one, five men stepped forward, later honored as the Panj Pyare (The Five Beloved Ones). These men came from different castes and regions — a powerful statement against the social divisions of the time. Guru Gobind Singh Ji baptized them with Amrit (sweetened water stirred with a double-edged sword) and introduced the Khalsa, meaning “the pure.”
The Guru then did something unprecedented: he asked the Panj Pyare to initiate him into the Khalsa as well, symbolizing the equality between the Guru and his followers.
With the creation of the Khalsa, Guru Gobind Singh Ji laid down a distinct code of conduct and identity for Sikhs. He gave them the surname Singh (lion) for men and Kaur (princess) for women, emphasizing courage, dignity, and equality. He also instituted the Five Ks — articles of faith that Khalsa Sikhs wear:
Kesh (unshorn hair)
Kanga (wooden comb)
Kara (steel bracelet)
Kachera (cotton undergarments)
Kirpan (ceremonial sword)
These symbols not only represent spiritual discipline but also serve as reminders of a Khalsa’s duty to stand up for justice and protect the oppressed.
The inauguration of the Khalsa was more than a religious reform — it was a social revolution. At a time when India was deeply divided by caste, religious persecution, and inequality, Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s vision of a fearless and unified community broke through barriers and empowered the marginalized.
That message still resonates today. Vaisakhi is now celebrated around the globe, especially in countries like
Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States, where Sikh communities continue to thrive and uphold the Khalsa ideals of selfless service (seva), equality, and spiritual strength.
In gurdwaras around the world, Sikhs commemorate this day with Amrit Sanchar ceremonies for those joining the Khalsa, along with prayers, kirtan (devotional singing), and community langar (free meals).
The story of the Khalsa’s creation — of courage, sacrifice, and unity — remains a cornerstone of Sikh identity and continues to inspire people across all walks of life.
Vaisakhi is not just a festival. It is a reminder of the power of faith, the strength of community, and the eternal flame of justice that the Khalsa was born to uphold.

(Abbotsford) — A message from the Abbotsford School District:
The Abbotsford School District was made aware of online threats directed at multiple schools across our district. We take all threats to the safety and well-being of our students and staff extremely seriously.
In response, our Safe Schools team is actively following established internal protocols, which include close coordination with the Abbotsford Police Department. At this time, police have found no evidence that the threats are credible, and their investigation is ongoing.
Additional safety measures are also being taken such as the locking of
exterior school doors, and heightened supervision at every school.
As with any critical incident, counselling support is available to both students and staff who may need it.
All schools remain open, but as always, families are encouraged to make the decision that feels best for them.
We remain committed to maintaining safe and caring learning environments and will continue to keep our school communities informed as needed.
The compact four- door Hyundai Elantra is the seventh generation of the Korean carmakers’ popular sedan. It is an attractive car with a premium feel to the exterior and interior styling and is certainly one of the best-looking cars in its sector with Hyundai’s “Parametric Dynamics” design language. Think futurism and sleek creases, the way the light plays on the toned flanks is simply wonderful! There are few changes to the Hyundai Elantra for 2025, Note the HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is a self- charging unit with an on-board battery and does not plug into wall outlet.
The Hybrid features a 1.6L Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine with 104 horsepower and 109 lb.-ft. of torque. It works with a 43-horsepower electric motor that produces another 125 lb.-ft. of torque. The two power sources together, produce a net output of 139 horsepower, and a respectable 195 lb.-ft. of torque. The Hybrid’s engine and electric motor work with a six-speed EcoShift dualclutch (DCT) transmission driving the front wheels.
The electric portion of the drivetrain also features the 1.32 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery located under the rear seat, but it does not intrude on trunk space — the Hybrid has the same 402-litre cargo capacity as the non-hybrid models. The entry Essential trim starts at $22,299. The Pre-
ferred is $24,099 but can be optioned with a Tech Package with such goodies as a sunroof, 10.25-inch cluster and central screen, dual-zone climate control and ambient lighting for $1,950. The Luxury is $28,299; with the hybrid powertrain an additional $2,500. The N Line Ultimate is $31,399.
Hyundai Canada offers the Preferred trim comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, sixspeaker audio, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, heated front seats and steering wheel, dualzone. Other features include A/C, passive keyless entry with hands-free trunk, and LED taillights, and auto on/off headlights. The top tier Ultimate model adds forward pedestrian and junction-turning detection, adaptive cruise control, wireless phone charging, digital gauges, leather upholstery, and a sunroof.
Interior wise, fit finish and details are ahead of what you would expect for the price. Yes, there is a surplus of hard black plastic trim, but it is all-high quality; with particular attention to details on items such as the controls and dash. The dash itself is very impressive and comprised of two 10.25-inch screens joined under a single piece of glass. The left screen displays the digital instrumentation while the right screen takes care of the infotainment and navigation. Note: this kind of dash is found in high-end cars such
as Mercedes –
Benz, so to find the fully digital dash in the Elantra is astounding! There is a premium luxury air to the Elantra especially if you opt for the mid and upper trims with full heated leather seats. The rear compartment is nicely finished with a cargo volume of 402 litres (14.2 cu ft) in the trunk. Headroom and legroom is fine in all quarters.
There is the optional driver-selectable mood lighting and the choice of 64 colours. BlueLink telematics, Bose premium audio with 8 speakers, 8.0” touch-screen display with rear view camera, and leather Seating are in the Ultimate version.
Safety includes such features as: Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, (RCCA), Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) with Pedestrian, Cyclist, and Junction Turning Detection,* Lane Following Assist (LFA), and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop-and-Go Capability. On the road, the first thing that surprises you is the serene, hushed ride. But the Elantra is also peppy to drive with stable, no drama handling. It feels agile, yet not jittery. I also enjoyed the crisp handling, and precise linear steering. The 6-speed gearbox gives quick, no glitch shifts, its more responsive thanks to the dual clutch system and the transitions are much smoother on up and down
shifts. The change over from electric hybrid mode to gas engine is also a pretty seamless affair. The Hybrid fuel economy is rated at 4.8 city, 4.5 highway, and 4.7 combined with regular-grade gasoline. Downsides are few. There is a lack of soft touch materials, and little too much hard plastic at the driver touch points but too be expected at this price point. Also, apart from white, all other paint colors are $250 extra. To sum up, the Hyundai Elantra is amongst the top sedan in its class, and also the best looking. The Hybrid is a segment buster in terms of performance, features, and comfort. You get handling and driver satisfaction that beats cars costing at least $10,000 more. Stellar fuel economy in this hybrid model also makes it a good performer. Highly recommended for families and singles everywhere.
2025 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid: Priced from $30,600 plus Freight and PDE.

First Nations Elders, families and seniors will soon have access to 235 new homes, as construction begins on three on-reserve rental housing developments.
Lake Babine Nation: 20 homes in the Villages of Tachet and Wit’at; and Tsawout First Nation: 16 homes at 7593 Tetayut Rd., Saanichton.
“I commend Khowutzun Development LLP for the unique partnerships and collaboration they have fostered with the Province, BC Housing and other partners,” said Cowichan Tribes Chief Sulsulxumaat Cindy Daniels. “These 199 new homes, at the edge of the Quw’utsun Sta’lo’ (Cowichan River), which has sustained our people physically and spiritually for millennia, will transform the lives of our people.”
The Province, through BC Builds at BC Housing, partnered with three First Nations to fast-track the construction of 235 new on-reserve rental homes:
Cowichan Tribes: 199 homes at 222 Cowichan Way, Duncan;
The new homes are funded in part by the BC Builds program, launched in February 2024 to deliver more homes for middle-income earners. They are prioritized for First Nations members with middle incomes, providing them more attainable housing options so they can stay and continue working and providing services in their own communities. Since the program launch, approximately 1,400 homes are underway, with nearly 2,500 more in various stages of early development.
“It is vital that Indigenous people in the province continue to have access to housing where they feel culturally safe and supported,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “The new 235 BC Builds
homes will support many First Nations members dedicated to providing the services people rely on, and also offer more opportunities for them to stay, strengthen cultural ties, and thrive in the community they call home.”
River’s Edge, the Cowichan Tribes development, will provide one- and two-bedroom homes, many of which will include dens. The Lake Babine Nation’s multi-unit housing project will have a mix of two- and four-bedroom homes in the villages of Tachet and Wit’at. Tsawout First Nation’s development will offer a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom homes, suitable for growing families.
“We’re proud to be building homes again,” said Chief Abraham Pelkey of SȾÁUTW (Tsawout) First Nation.
“Our members will soon be living peacefully and comfortably in new homes designed to meet their needs. Thank you, BC Housing, for making
this a reality for our Nation. To our administration and staff – your hard work in getting us to this day does not go unnoticed.”
Each of the three developments will be owned and operated by the respective First Nations and is designed to reflect the housing strategy of their communities. This means that not only are the homes of suitable size, but rents are within reach for the Nation members and will remain affordable.
These projects are part of a $19-billion housing investment by the B.C. government. In 2018, B.C. became the first and only province in Canada to invest in First Nations housing on reserves, a federal jurisdiction.
Since 2017, the Province has nearly 92,000 homes delivered or underway, including almost 6,800 homes for Indigenous people, both on and off reserve.

The Abbotsford Smile Foundation and the UBC Bhangra Club, two studentled non-profit organizations. Together, they recently completed a care package initiative, donating over 200 care packages and 150 blankets to those in need in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. This effort was a collective initiative to provide essential items to the homeless community during these challenging times.
In addition, they continue to focus on ongoing initiatives within Abbotsford. We remain committed to addressing the needs of our local community, ensuring that we provide consistent sup-
port to those facing homelessness.
We are grateful for the opportunity to make a difference and hope to continue expanding our efforts to make a positive impact.

More people will now benefit from enhancements to the Rental Assistance Program (RAP) and the Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) program, helping lowincome families and seniors afford their rent.
“With the rising cost of living, we’re enhancing supports through the RAP and SAFER programs to ensure more families and seniors can access essential financial help,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “These changes will help people stay in their homes in the communities they love and allow us to support more people as they manage the challenges of rent and living expenses.”
double the number of families eligible for support from approximately 3,200 to nearly 6,000;
increasing the average family supplement for existing recipients from $400 per month to $700 per month;
Starting April 1, 2025, and as part of Budget 2025, RAP and SAFER programs have expanded eligibility criteria that will benefit more than 30,000 households in B.C. Existing eligible recipients will also see an automatic increase in their average benefits, providing them with more financial assistance to contribute toward rent. These changes build on the improvements to SAFER and the one-time RAP benefit introduced in April 2024.
“Seniors are vital to our communities, and they should receive the support they need to live comfortably,” said Susie Chant, parliamentary secretary for seniors' services and long-term care. “This change to eligibility requirements offers much-needed relief for low-income seniors and families facing rising living costs. These improvements will help seniors live safely and comfortably in their homes and in communities they’ve helped build.”
Improvements to RAP include:
increasing the household income limit for eligibility from $40,000 to $60,000 (before taxes) is expected to nearly
implementing single provincial rent ceilings based on household size, which can now be reviewed and amended annually and will help ensure rent support for people remains adequate and flexible to changes; and
removing the requirement for employment income, which will result in lowincome families that are not receiving income or disability assistance being able to receive rental assistance if other eligibility requirements are met.
Enhancements to SAFER include:
increasing the household income limit for eligibility from $37,240 to $40,000, which is expected to benefit as many as 1,600 more seniors, for an estimated total of 25,000 SAFER recipients; and increasing the average supplement by nearly 30%, bringing the average monthly subsidy for existing seniors to $337.
“The SAFER program is an essential support for low-income B.C. seniors living on fixed incomes who are struggling with the rising cost of rent, groceries and other items needed for healthy aging,” said Dan Levitt, B.C. seniors advocate. “I’m pleased more seniors will be eligible to receive SAFER, however, I’d still like to see Continued on Page: 44

the SAFER program be indexed to inflation and have government commit to ensuring the program is meeting its goal to have recipients paying no more than 30% of their income on rent. The seniors’ demographic in B.C. is increasing rapidly and supports such as SAFER are critically important for the quality of life for low-income seniors.”
Through Budget 2025, the Province is investing an additional $375 million over the next three years to enhance both RAP and SAFER programs. This includes the $75 million committed through an agreement with the B.C. Green Party caucus to boost the pro-
grams and deliver more supports for families and seniors.
“The B.C. Greens have long advocated for stronger rental support, and we’re proud to see these improvements through our accord with the NDP,” said Rob Botterell, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands. “Housing must be a priority and the $75 million we secured will help more families and seniors get the help they need to make rents more affordable.”
To ensure that eligible families and seniors are fully informed about the support available to them, BC Housing has launched a public awareness campaign.
