Installing the Adi Granth and the First Hukam reverence.” Baba Budha asked, “O earth. Baba Budha placed the Aid
t took about three years to complete the compilation by Guru Arjan Dev ji. Guru Arjan Dev ji named it the Adi Granth. “It will not be just a book, but a Granth in which the Word of God will be tied down so that Sikhs can read it, chant it, sing it, remember it and live it,” said Guru ji. This whole work was finished on August 15, 1604. It took another fifteen days to write the table of contents and bind the Granth. On August 30, 1604, The Granth was brought into Sri Harimandar Sahib The Golden Temple.
Sikh Sangats were invited for this special day. At Ramsar, Guru Arjan explained the importance and greatness of the Adi Granth. He said that no one should ever try to change a single letter or a word of it. The one who will change it will be foolish and will carry the consequences. Then he requested Baba Budha ji to carry the Adi Granth on his head, while he himself carried the Chaur Sahib. He walked barefoot from Ramsar to Sri Harimandar Sahib. The Sikhs walked with the Adi Granth forming a procession and singing kirtan all the way. Everyone looked like God on the
Granth on a decorated throne in Sri Harimandar Sahib. Then he opened the Adi Granth and read a hymn as a Hukam. It was Soohee Mahalla 5.

The Adi Granth was brought to that place with the same reverence as it was brought from Ramsar to Harimandar Sahib. For the rest of his life, Guru Arjan Dev ji slept on the floor by the side of the Adi Granth. In this way, he taught the Sikhs to respect and worship the Adi Granth. Guru Arjan had already given the Sikhs a central place to worship, the Golden Temple. He had already organized the sangats under masands better than before. He had already strengthened the practice of giving dasvand to Guru’s house. Now by giving the Adi Granth to the Sikhs he perfected the organization of the faith in every way. He had given the Sikhs a new and effective practical living guidance to worship God through the Word of God. Sikhs throughout the world celebrate this day annually by organising Nagar Kirtans (Parades) and following the example set by Guru Arjan Dev ji. This year we celebrate the 410th year of the first reading of the Adi Granth which was also presented for the first time to the public.

What is a Nagar Kirtan?
ell, I’m no expert and there are many learned individuals who can do a much better and meaningful interpretation than I can, however, I was recently asked ‘what is a Nagar Kirtan’ so I took it upon myself to explain it to my friends. A Nagar Kirtan is a time of spiritual acknowledgment, to celebrate a holy time, and to bring the community together in a processional where the highlight is often the transportation of our Sikh holy scripture, Guru Granth Sahib Ji, with undue respect and reverence. It is celebrated with the singing of holy hymns, and is inclusive involving young and old, all faiths and communities. Organizers encourage members of the community to participate and accept offerings of food and drinks from devout individuals. The kaleidoscope of colours, fragrances, and joyful veneration is hard to miss, and one cannot attend a Nagar Kirtan without feeling a sense of admiration for the Sikh community, in maintaining its religion and culture in such an inclusive manner for everyone to enjoy. Nagar Kirtan (Punjabi: ngr kIrqn) is a Sikh custom involving the processional singing of holy hymns throughout a community. While practiced at any time, it is customary in the month of Visakhi (or Vaisakhi). Traditionally, the procession is led by the saffron-robed Panj Piare (the five beloved of the Guru), who are followed by the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy Sikh scripture, which is placed on a float. Commonly, members of the procession are unshod in deference to the scripture so displayed. Likewise, many cover their heads and don the colour saffron or orange. The road before the procession is cleared by Sewadars. Bystanders bow their heads to the scripture. Food may be provided them from floats that follow the Scripture or from stationary points in the vicinity of the procession. The procession concludes at the Gurudwara with Ardas (pray).

GURU GRANTH SAHIB is a very vital part of our cultural heritage. Its content has not being understood by its annotators and interpreters. In their hands its very meaning and message has been perverted and its essence has been lost. It has been made to mean a sort of internal spiritual relationship with God, which concerns man’s eternal, as distinct from his temporal destiny. With almost complete in-difference to the economic, social, political ordering of this present life on earth- hardly having any concern with the affairs of this world. Its meaning has been made into an individualist and private piety, and an altogether other wordly, after death concern, with the result, that in actual practice, its meaning and message and teachings have been made to come to terms with the self seeking- evil economic, social and political arrangements, looked upon as somehow fixed and humanly unalterable, as if ordained by God. gious and ethical principles have been talked in an environmental vacuum as if man is not a social being and he can live and put those principles into practice without the society, with the result that SIN has come to be located exclusively in man-in his selfishness, greed, wrong headedness and in his Perverted will. SIN enshrined in the evil social structure has been completely obliterated from the religious consciousness. Behaviour pattern enforced by economic, social, political structure is completely lost sight of. GURBANI as annotated and interpreted has obliterated the vital fact that man becomes free from the bondage of MAYA, becomes religious in the sense of being the human embodiment of NAM, not by realizing himself in opposition to society but by realizing himself through society. In fact the dialectical relationship between man and his society has been completely lost sight of; with the result that the
social ordering is not in the picture at all. Man, by his very make-up is a social being.
He cannot be even conceived without his society. Whatever be the kind of his make up, self oriented or cooperative- it must have its economic and social structure of society, it must have its basis in human motivation. HAUME- selfishness, greed etc. The cardinal sin in the mind of man according to GURBANI, is dialectically related to the institution of private property and the social, political relations and institutions in consonance with it in society. One can not be done away with, without doing away with the other. Man’s make up and the economic social set up of society must reciprocate each other. Without their reciprocity the social process just cannot go on. This obvious fact has been completely lost sight of by the annotators and interpreters of GURBANI.
GURBANI is concerned with the affairs of this life, with man’s life here and now on earth- in society. Love of God in practice means love of all fellow human beings. If love of God is genuine and not only a theory, self intoxication or hypocrisy, it must translate itself into social human actions. GURBANI’S entire emphasis in on the complete transformation of the nature of man, the make up of man from MANMUKH to GURMUKH- from completely self- oriented to completely, communally, cooperatively oriented. This transformation entails the complete transformation of his motivations, the complete uprooting of HAUME- selfishness, greed etc. from his mind to give place to the love for all human beings. Whatever be the nature of human motives, of necessity they must translate themselves into actions through the social relations and institutions of society. It is obvious that man can be spiritually brotherly only within a community organized on the basis of brotherhood in material relations. If GURMUKH is to be a reality and not only a pipe dream, social structure must be in consonance with his make up and motives. Principles advocated by Gurbani can only take practical shape in a communally structured way of life. Society based on individual self seeking must of necessity give place to one based on cooperative human relationship. In other words NAM becomes meaningful only in a society based on cooperative human relationships. The annotators and interpreters of GURBANI have completely failed to work out the economic, social and political meaningsm, the implications in terms of human relationships, of rooting out HAUME, selfishness, greed etc. from the mind of man and replacing them with NAM. Love for all fellow men. What would religious brotherhood mean if the social structure is based on the institution of private property, with the

social relations and institution of private property, with the social relations and institutions in consonance with it? Such a social structure would be in complete contradiction to the religious principles. In such an antireligious economy, religiously motivated people are compelled to behave, in everyday practice in anti- religious ways. However if they take the principles of GURBANI seriously there is no option for them except to become revolutionaries against the established order. If NAM has to become a social human fact it must come to grip with the economic, social and political realities of the present day society. It is obvious that the present social structure and the behaviour pattern enforced by its economic, social and political set up contradicts the ethical principles advocated by GURBANI. So in the present economic, social and political set up the ethical principles of GURBANI- the motivations of GURMUKH are revolutionary. Human motivation and the social ordering of life, the social set up are the two sides of the same coin. GURBANI is vitally concerned not only with the motivation of human beings but also the way of life is ordered in society- its social structure. It denounced and condemns again and again the inhuman misdistribution of the material means of life in the contemporary society. HARAAM, unlawful, is categorically prohibited. But the interpreters of GURBANI have not explained as to what is morally lawful and unlawful according to GURBANI, whether or not it is in consonance with the motivations of GURMUKH. GURBANI also condemns and declares immoral and anti- God the social relations and institutions i.e. man woman relationship, the ideological cultural apparatus KAZI and PANDIT and the ANTI PEOPLE, SATANIC STATE, which correspond and sustain this in human mal- distribu-
tion. GURBANI gives the alternative social human relations and institutions to the one’s it condemns. But no thought has been given by the interpreters to the contrast between the two set ups and their significance. As presented by GURBANI, MAYA and NAM are two ways of the ordering of society each complete from top to bottom, contradictory to each other. GURBANI condemns the one and advocates the other. The interpreters have completely failed to comprehend this fundamental fact about the content of GURBANI. As a matter of fact they are completely oblivious to the meanings of the ethical principles advocated by GURBANI in terms of social structure. What is worse is that they paraphrase GURBANI in its own idiom which is practically valueless for the modern reader. If GURBANI’S truth is to be communicated and made meaningful to the contemporary man, it must be presented in the social idiom of today and in the context of the problems he is confronted with. In my humble way, for the last many years I have been trying to set things right. I have been trying to workout and express the kind of social set up, the way of life implied and expressed by GURBANI, the meaning of the motivation of GURMUKH (the human social content of NAM) in terms of the social structure. I have still a long way to go. I have been writing in Punjabi and in the contemporary social idiom so that the truth of GURBANI reaches the people whose cultural heritage GURBANI- The GUR’s Word- is.
