First British Columbian vaccinated, COVID-19 immunizations begin

W

ednesday marked the first day of British Columbia’s provincewide COVID-19 immunizations, the most comprehensive vaccine program to ever be delivered in B.C.

in British Columbia to receive the COVID-19 immunization. Yunus has worked in the same long-term care home in the Vancouver Coastal Health region for 41 years, all in the same unit and on the same floor.

Over the coming days, approximately 4,000 health-care workers in British Columbia will be rolling up their sleeves to receive the first approved COVID-19 vaccine.

The first person in the Fraser Health region to be vaccinated was Linda Latour, a health-care assistant. Yunus and Latour provide personal care and support to seniors and this vaccine will ensure the people they care for Nisha Yunus, a 64-year old residential will be a little safer today. care aid was one of the first people

“I am so grateful. It feels like a dream came true. It is both a privilege and an honour to receive the first COVID-19 vaccine in British Columbia,” Yunus said. “I have seen first-hand what COVID-19 does to families, and I am hopeful we are getting closer to finally reaching the end of this pandemic, so people can reunite safely with their loved ones and put this behind us.” The first approved COVID-19 vaccine is being administered to healthcare workers who work in long-term care homes and front-line health-care workers essential to the COVID-19 response. “This is a hopeful day for all of us in B.C.,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “Among the very first people to receive it are those who care for and support B.C.’s seniors – by getting immunized, they are helping to protect those most vulnerable to COVID-19 and helping us all get one step closer to ending this pandemic.” Starting the week of Dec. 21, 2020, vaccines will be delivered weekly to all health authorities. Expected timelines will depend on vaccine approval and availability. As vaccines become more available, they will be provided to other priority groups throughout British Columbia. “Every person who receives the vaccine makes all of us that much safer, PAGE 6

and we now have a safe and effective vaccine available and rolling out in B.C. This vaccine and the others that will be available in the weeks ahead will save lives, protect those who are most vulnerable and reduce the disruption that we have experienced in communities everywhere,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer. “We are not yet through the storm, but brighter days are indeed on the horizon.” A registration and record system are in development, including a process to register for vaccine access and so people can receive a formal record of immunization. All vaccines go through a rigorous regulatory scientific review process for safety, quality and efficacy at Health Canada before being made available to the public. The immunization plan is being led by Dr. Ross Brown, Vancouver Coastal Health’s vice-president for pandemic response and director of regional emergency operations centre; Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer; and the Ministry of Health. They are supported by the Immunize BC Operations Centre that includes BC Centre for Disease Control, Provincial Health Services Authority, First Nations Health Authority, Canadian Red Cross, Canadian Armed Forces and health authority and ministry leadership.

Concerned about lead in your drinking water?

(NC) Even if your drinking water looks clear, it’s never completely pure. Clean water can pick up substances as it travels through pipes towards your home. One of these could be lead.

Often, the most significant source of lead in drinking water comes from old lead service lines. These are the water pipes that link houses to the main water supply. Some plumbing parts or fittings, such as solder or faucets or valves, may also contain lead that can seep into drinking water.

Lead is a metal found naturally in the environment, but not often found in natural water sources or in water leaving drinking water treatment plants. However, it can seep into drinking water from plumbing systems. Many factors can affect how much gets into the water, including chemistry of the water, age of the plumbing, and length of time the water sits in the pipes.

Provincial grants funding community arts, culture, sports British Columbians will benefit from a wide range of arts, cultural and sports programs for people of all ages with more than $45 million distributed to local organizations this year through provincial Community Gaming Grants. “While local soccer drills, arts programs and cultural celebrations may look different this year, I’m so pleased we can continue to support programs like these,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “We know how important it is for notfor-profit organizations to continue to plan for the future, so when it is time for us to be together again, we can fully embrace sports, arts and cultural experiences as part of living in our vibrant and healthy communities.” More than 700 not-for-profit arts organizations are receiving approximately $18.1 million in Community Gaming Grants to deliver arts and cultural programs in communities provincewide. People can participate in performing arts, literature and media arts programs, as well as Indigenous and cultural events, and other related activities through community-based organizations. Some of the organizations receiving funding this year include the U’mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay, Columbia Valley Arts Council in Invermere, African Stages Association in Surrey and Kelowna Ballet Society.

This year more than ever, finding creative outlets and connections has been hugely important to our collective well-being,” said Sara Knelman, executive director, Two Rivers Art Gallery in Prince George. “The support we receive from the Community Gaming Grants program is vital to our ability to develop inspiring exhibitions and arts programs for children, youth and families.”

India, having been ruled by the British for so long, still has a lot of British influence all over. This is more so in our schools. I remember learning the British history in my high school years. At school, we knew very little about Canada or any other countries. However, the histories of India and Great Britain were at our fingertips. Though my father, Indar Singh Sanghera, a pioneer, had come to Canada in early 1900s and stayed and worked here for close to 25 years yet he mentioned very little about the life in Canada to us. My older brother, Gurbux Singh Sanghera, arrived in Vancouver 1955. At that time the correspondence was mainly through letters. Once in a while he would write to me about the life here. However, it was quite sketchy. As a matter of fact; members of my family were one of the first ones from our village Pharwala in Jalandhar District, to come to Canada. Thus, I was very excited when my brother sent me a permit (sponsorship letter) to come to Canada and join him.

In 1966, the year of my arrival in Canada, W.A.C. Bennett was leader of the Social Credit Party and the premier of British Columbia. Before entering politics he used to own a hardware store in Kelowna. Thus, he ran the provincial government like a business. Bennett is considered to be one of the chief builders of this province. He opened up BC‘s north and interior by building highways, dams, bridges, railways and what not. Despite being a champion of free enterprise, Bennett nationalized BC Hydro, BC Rail and BC Ferries etc. Actually, BC Ferries was affectionately called as Bennett’s Navy. Not only that, he was a fierce fighter for BC‘s rights and proper place in the Canadian Confederation. Lester (Mike) Pearson was the Prime Minster of Canada at that time. Pearson was truly a gentleman, a scholar and an esteemed diplomat. Bennett would often clash with Pearson demanding more money or rights for BC. Ottawa would often accede to Bennett’s demands. However, relations between Victoria and Ottawa became quite tense when Pierre Elliott Trudeau

BRABER EQUIPMENT BEGINS OPERATIONS IN LUDHIANA, INDIA

After over five decades of success in the national and international market, Braber Equipment has begun its operations in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. Braber Equipment Ltd. is a successful farm and agricultural equipment distributor and manufacturer and part of the vastly growing BE Group of companies. Focusing on quality, service, support and innovation, the BE Group carries an array of farming equipment as well as a complimentary line of industrial power products. “We had been importing product from India for 15-20 years”, said owner and operator, Nick Braber, “however there were some logistical challenges that we wanted to overcome; we weren’t able to buy directly from manufacturers.” Nick went back and forth to India many times and built close working relationships with manufac-

turing companies. Working off of those relationships, Nick established Braber Equipment India, which now is a 35,000 sqft facility nestled in Sahnewal, Ludhiana, India with expansion plans for an 80,000 sqft. facility. The India operations mirror the North American establishments; employee satisfaction has been a forefront in the operations. The India facility has the same layout as the North American buildings and provides air conditioning in employee work areas as well as janitorial services all throughout the day. The state-of-the-art establishment, which mainly uses robotic systems to manage inventory and production is determined to hire locals. Currently they employ 25 people all supervised by the operations manager, Manpreet Singh, who has worked with Braber Equipment for the past 15

years. Braber Equipment was founded in 1969, by Nick’s father, Bill Braber. The Brabers were new to Abbotsford at the time, having immigrated from Holland. Bill returned to Holland each year to purchase farm equipment to be sold to dealers in British Columbia. From there, Braber Equipment quickly grew and it wasn’t long before the company started successfully expanding their products beyond that of the farming world. In 1991, Nick Braber took over the operations and built upon his father’s legacy values of quality, service, support and innovation. Under Nick’s leadership, Braber Equipment’s growing success allowed them to further grow the family business and a second, complimentary company was born now operating as BE Power Equipment. As Canada’s largest

manufacturer of pressure washers, BE Power Equipment is a well-known brand in their areas of expertise which includes pressure washers, water pumps, air compressors, and generators. Today, with four global manufacturing facilities serving over 30 countries world-wide, the BE group will continue to grow while building upon the values instilled from previous generations. Nick Braber along with sister Jackie McAlesse and third generation owners Curtis Braber (son of Nick Braber) and Rory Bjarnason (nephew of Nick Braber) together will continue to grow the BE brand. Ludhiana is the eighth facility to be opened by the BE group after tremendous success in Abbotsford (Canada); Minnesota (USA); Sydney (Australia); Shanghai (China); Florida (USA); Oregon (USA); and Kitchener (Canada).

Proud of every girl I had a chance to play : Bhumi Pednekar

Bhumi Pednekar made her Bollywood debut five years ago with Dum Laga Ke Haisha opposite Ayushmann Khurrana. She has tried to craft a career with strong performance-oriented roles over the years.Since "Dum Laga Ke Haisha", Bhumi has won plaudits for her performances in films such as "Toilet: Ek Prem Katha", "Lust Stories", "Shubh Mangal Saavdhan", "Sonchiriya", "Saand Ki Aankh", "Bala", "Pati Patni Aur Woh", and "Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare". She is now gearing up for the release of "Durgamati". "I don't think there is anything I would change in the last five years and my journey. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with the writers, directors, actors, producers I have worked with," Bhumi said. She says that every character she has played till now is very special to her."I worked very hard on each of these films. I am very picky when it comes to my movies and the things that I associate myself with, because I have worked hard to build the credibility I have. That's why I have a set of trusted loyal audiences that have always supported my films," she declared. Bhumi wouldn't change anything. "I wouldn't want to change my debut, anything in life. I am so proud of every girl that I have had a chance to play," she said.

Mardaani as a franchise gives hope and courage to women : Rani Mukerji

Inspired by shocking true crimes against women by juveniles, Mardaani 2 saw Rani in a race against time to capture a brutal serial rapist who systematically targets women. The film received incredible appreciation from the media and critics and took the

gritty cop franchise forward. On the first anniversary of the thriller, Rani opened up about why the Mardaani franchise is close to her heart. "The franchise of Mardaani is very important to me, not only because it's talking about women empowerment and certain brutalities that take place on women, and there is a woman, who is the main protagonist, who is standing up against all of this, it is also an informative film as it projects a lot of things women need to be aware of. It speaks about all of that because in a society we tend to always try to see the positive things. Though we want to think about positivity and good things but in reality, certain people have bad intentions and on a bad day we can encounter them," says the actress.

Generation gap will always be there : Swara Bhasker Actress Swara Bhasker is back on screen in the web series Bhaag Beanie Bhaag, which deals with generation gap among other themes, and she says that conflict of thoughts and generational gap between parents and children are real issues. It is a reason why the show and its protagonist resonate with everyone, she adds."It was quite an interesting character for me to portray because (her character in the show) Beanie is not like who I am in real life. I am never hesitant in life. Even as a child, I was headstrong. But Beanie's predicament is actually universal and the problem that she goes through is quite a South Asian problem, where culturally we have a very tight family structure," Swara said."Beanie's character

resonates with youngsters of today because they all face a conflict between parental expectations and their desire and dream for their own lives, especially in career and life partner. No wonder that the show is also well received in the MiddleEast, Bangladesh and Pakistan!" she claimed."I think generation gap between us and parents will always be there, and therefore the conflict. My parents are always supportive, and I would say the greatest gift our parents can give us is support. I derive so much confidence because I know that even when the world will go against me, I can come home to my parents. That is really the root that gives us the confidence to fly high," concluded Swara.

Malala Yousafzai a living and breathing folklore for girls : Divya Dutta Actress Divya Dutta says Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai is one of the most inspirational figures for every young girl globally, who aspires to rise against the odds.Divya, who played Malala's mother

Roles being offered to me are different now : Sonu Sood Actor Sonu Sood, who is in the limelight for the charity work he has been doing during lockdown, says the kind of rolescoming his way have changed.Sonu, who became popular playing the villain in Bollywood films, turned hero in real life for many stranded migrant workers when he organised transport and resources for them to reach home amid the pandemic-induced lockdown.Asked how he wants to take forward his career in Bollywood, Sonu said. "The kind of roles that have been offered are different. They are larger than life, and real life hero roles. Things that I have done in real life, they are trying to put that in my scripts, too, which is different. I have to make sure that I live up to the expectations and do justice with whatever I do," he added. The actor continued: "There is a huge amount of responsibility. I came to the city to become an actor, and I will keep on doing what I enjoy the most. There will be new roles, and some new stories."At present, Sonu is seen hosting "Bharat Ke Mahaveer". The series brings stories that represent the spirit of solidarity in the country, and celebrates Indians who have shown extraordinary kindness during the coronavirus

in the film Gul Makai, said: "Malala Yousafzai is a living and breathing folklore for young girls who aspire to rise against all odds. I have always been a huge supporter of lifting our girl child to empowerment and it was an endearing journey for me to play Malala's mother. We researched and rehearsed every aspect of the film to get the essence right."The film is directed by Amjad Khan, and casts Reem Shaikh in the title role, with Atul Kulkarni, Mukesh Rishi and Pankaj Tripathi in pivotal roles.

pandemic.Talking about his decision to be part of the series, Sonu said: "I wanted to connect with every single individual who did something during these tough times for a common man… I wanted to understand how the whole drive started. And it was very inspiring and a great learning experience."The series airs on D i s c o v e r y channel, and Discovery Plus app, and comes in partnership between the United Nations in India, NITI Aayog and Discovery channel.

BC Marketplace promotes local businesses The BC Marketplace is an online resource showcasing more than 1,500 B.C.-based businesses that helps boost small-business growth and encourages British Columbians to buy local.

Shopping local is a great way to support our local economies, and this vital resource will help small businesses expand their e-commerce footprint and attract new customers beyond their backyards.”

“British Columbians understand the value of supporting local businesses, and the BC Marketplace is a great tool to help people shop local,” said Ravi Kahlon, B.C.’s Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “It is also a great way for businesses

The B.C. government and the Government of Canada, through Western Economic Diversification Canada, have each provided $169,000 to Small Business BC for the BC Marketplace. The funding was used to improve the website’s functionality,

including enhanced profiles for small businesses and regional search capabilities for consumers. “As a small business owner, it is wonderful to be included on the BC marketplace. It is a great resource that contributes to supporting and shopping locally this holiday season,” said Leigh Joseph, owner, Sḵwálwen Botanicals. “Having one website to visit with so many vibrant and diverse local businesses listed is a great way to learn more about the businesses in our communities.”

The BC Marketplace was launched in April 2020 by Small Business BC (SBBC) to give immediate support to small businesses during COVID-19 when consumer shopping trends shifted online. A clearer vision on where things can or will head in the future or perhaps what is possible, will be coupled with the ability to recognise where doubt lies or areas lacking clarity. Any exaggerated expectations of somebody else can come to light as well as the opportunity to modify them so that everybody becomes happy.

You can be drawn into the needs and desires of someone else mainly because they can be quite intense. Hold back from making generous promises for the future because they could turn into greater responsibilities than you now realise. If this happens it will make you feel rebellious, so be cautious now and avoid this need.

Either somebody new can come into your life or something can take a new direction with another person that can bring a lot of change into your life. This is likely to include much social activity to early January. It may involve you with a group of people that will have a level of excitement attached. Life will start to look up.

You cannot afford to waste time when it comes to matters that need to be sorted out related to work or daily routines. There is something new that will be substantial connected to this, so it must be done properly and to the last detail. You will actually enjoy the end result. It can have a restful and peaceful effect.

The opportunity for leisure, pleasure and social activity will step up another notch. It is also a good time for romance, which will continue until early January. Taking a holiday will be most enjoyable, even planning one for a later time. Spend this week finalising loose ends or getting details in place, otherwise they could be a bother.

You can begin to organise things at home or with the family that give you a sense of satisfaction, especially if it happens to be social. Someone could surprise you with their agreement to be involved or perhaps help you out. You could also decide it is time to buy something new for the house that will jazz it up in some way.

A favourable decision made by somebody else could enable you to make plans you may have been uncertain about. This could include travel for a short period of time. Life will become busy with a lot of running around or the need to communicate more than usual. Involved in this could be something you haven’t done before.

You could be tempted to buy some get fit equipment or spend money on a program associated with improving your general health and wellbeing. If not in this direction you may want something that makes life easier when it comes to daily routines or jobs that need to be done. Just be cautious about spending too much money.

The Solar Eclipse this week occurs in your sign. This can bring a dramatic new direction, especially if born around mid December. There may be a sense that a new life is beginning to take shape. You are more than prepared to take the risk. Venus will also be in your sign now until 9th January, bringing you much pleasure.

You will be more reflective than anything else, particularly when it comes to letting things go, which could also mean getting rid of the unnecessary. Spending time alone will be something you enjoy. It will allow you to get things in place that may have been eluding you of late. A major shift is about to take place in your life.

You are finally coming to the end of cycles that have been holding you back since late 2017. Your focus needs to be on your priorities. Being more mentally determined could seem to come from nowhere. Peace, balance and enjoyment are what you should be considering from now to early January with a view to persist from then on.

It could seem that life keeps piling on the pressure. There is no escape from this but you could find a new way of applying a more balanced way of dealing with it from now to early January. It is better to come to a state of peace with it. Don’t be tempted to make impulsive decisions financially that may not be beneficial.

Bonnie Henry Among the Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation Robots Joining Fraser Health's Infection Fighting Team

F

raser Health has new weapons at our disposal to combat COVID-19 and other infectious diseases, as 14 new Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) robots are deployed to hospitals across the Fraser Health region to kill viruses and bacteria. The fleet will join two existing robots – fondly known as Phoenix and Haley – in targeting germs that linger on surfaces and can potentially cause infections. Fraser Health staff voted to name two of the newcomers – Bonnie and Henry – after Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer. The robots cost approximately $2 million in total, and are funded in part by generous donors who support their local hospital foundations. Surrey Hospitals Foundation, Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation, Peach Arch Hospital Foundation, Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation, Burnaby Hospital Foundation, Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation, and the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation fundraised specifically for the robots. “We are grateful for the generosity of our community,” says Dr. Victoria Lee, President and CEO, Fraser Health. “It is through their support that our UVGI program has grown from a pilot project with two robots to a comprehensive program with 16 in just four years.” The Xenex Light Strike GermZapping robots emit short pulses of UV light, damaging the DNA and RNA of harmful pathogens, including COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2), C. difficile (Clostridioides difficile), CPO (Carbapenemase-producing organisms), C. auris (Candida auris), and MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).

teria in as little as 20 minutes. Fraser Health’s two resident UVGI robots are working overtime during the COVID-19 pandemic to help keep patients safe by disinfecting rooms and units in acute and community settings where the virus is present. Housekeeping and clinical staff plan the robots’ schedule. The robots themselves keep an internal time-sheet of where and when they work and the data is sent to a server so Fraser Health can monitor usage. They may be the flashiest part of the infection team, but the robots don’t work alone. An Environmental Services (EVS) operator is at the controls, working with Fraser Health Infection Prevention and Control, housekeeping staff and health care aides using traditional and chemical cleaning methods.

“Environmental cleaning is an essential component of our multi-pronged approach to reducing hospital-acquired infections,” says Dr. Elizabeth Brodkin, Chief Medical Health Officer, Fraser Health. “We have made tremendous strides in recent years in enhancing our infection prevention The robots light up a room as they and control practices. UVGI is andisinfect, removing viruses and bac- other layer to keep our patients safe.” PAGE 31
