Supports for people, businesses in 2020 helping build recovery for everyone By taking action to support people and businesses impacted by the global pandemic, Premier John Horgan and the B.C. government have begun building a strong economic recovery that includes everyone in British Columbia. “British Columbians came together to face the challenge of COVID-19 with resilience and strength, and while there’s light at the end of the tunnel with vaccines arriving daily, the road to recovery is still ahead of us,” said Premier John Horgan. “The actions we’ve taken to invest in people and support small businesses in our communities are helping us ensure recovery includes everyone – not just those at the top. We’ve come a long way together, but there’s more to do.” Focused on the millions of British Columbians who had a difficult year, Premier Horgan and the government delivered the tax-free BC Recovery Benefit, available to 90% of adults in B.C., providing up to $1,000 for families or $500 for individuals.

5 tips for effective remote learning (NC) As schools continue with virtual learning, most parents are looking for new ways to keep their kids engaged and on track. Fortunately, there are some simple tips and tricks that can help. Stay ahead of the learning curve with these simple remote learning tips. 1. Keep to a school schedule. School time means structured time, and maintaining that schedule will be your best tool to separate class time from playtime. Using a timer to clearly block off chunks of time for work and breaks will do wonders for your child’s study discipline. 2. Create designated environments.

PAGE 8

Create effective habits and provide dedicated spaces for learning. Set aside part of the home for your child’s workspace and let them unwind somewhere else. If space is tight, even a small corner or table blocked off from everything else can create that mental separation needed for focusing. 3. Get creative with new tools. Sometimes all it takes is something new to keep kids motivated. For example, some colourful binders with their favourite characters can help with organization, a white noise app can help with concentration. If your child doesn’t use every tool pro-

vided, that’s okay. The important thing is introducing them to the importance of finding the right tools to stay productive. 4. Communicate with teachers. The relationship between parents and teachers has never been more essential to your kids’ success at school. So, make sure you’re regularly checking in to see what’s working and what needs improvement. Whether it’s email, a phone call or video call, find what works and stick to it.

Funding announced for wood stove exchange rebate program Communities throughout the province will benefit from cleaner air as a result of $270,000 from the 2020-21 Wood Stove Exchange Program. The program provides incentives to people replacing old, smoky wood stoves with cleaner options. A total of 19 communities have applied for funding to continue their exchange program, or have sufficient funding from previous years to continue offering rebates to their residents. “This program has been very successful in encouraging people to switch to cleaner wood stoves or different technologies entirely,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “I’m very pleased these local governments are continuing to support this program and are working with the Province PAGE 14

Adding surgeries for patients: Catching up from COVID-19

As of Nov. 22, 2020, 90% of patients who had their surgery postponed during the first wave of COVID-19 were able to have their surgery completed through B.C.’s commitment to surgical renewal.

“The surgical renewal commitment to patients is a massive and necessary undertaking to address postponed surgeries and meet the growing demand for surgery within British Columbia,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “Our sixth monthly report tells a remarkable story of achievement in the number of patients called, surgeries delivered, operating room hours extended, waitlists reduced, and staff hired and trained.” On March 16, 2020, non-urgent scheduled surgeries were postponed to ensure hospitals had the capacity for COVID-19 patients. On May 7, the surgical renewal plan was launched. Non-urgent scheduled surgeries resumed on May 18. The first month of surgical renewal was spent adapting to new practices and increasing surgeries until they returned to pre-COVID-19 volumes in mid-June. Those early weeks paved the way for the gains that

Jacqueline Fernandez all set to have a tight schedule in 2021 New year is here with lots of new hopes and surprises but for our Bollywood’s Ms. Sunshine Jacqueline Fernandez, it has brought with it more work and shoots. Not only is the actress not complaining but is all the more happy to be shooting non-stop as her very first month of 2021 looks jam packed. With the start of the year, the talented actress starts the shoot for Cirkus followed by Bhoot Police, two of her many films lined up currently. A source close to Jacqueline revealed her busy schedule for this January saying, "With the start of the year Jacqueline directly jumps into shoot for Cirkus till around the mid of January and then she will immediately go on to the sets of Bhoot Police, so she really doesn't even have a day of break in the entire month."Ever since the lockdown had lifted slightly, the hard working actress had been constantly working without any breaks so much so that she celebrated the big occasions from Diwali to Christmas, everything on sets shooting and now the new year seems to bring in more of such schedules for the hardworking star. Jacqueline has 4 big-ticket films in her kitty to shoot for keeping her busy as a bee since the lockdown relaxed even a little. For some of these she will be reuniting with her old co-stars like Saif Ali Khan for Bhoot Police, Akshay Kumar for Bachchan Pandey and Salman Khan for Kick 2, while we will also get to see her in a new pairing opposite Ranveer Singh for Cirkus.

Nobody's tapped into my comic side : Nushrratt Bharuccha

Albeit given the opportunity to tickle the funny bone in films like Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Nushrratt Bharuccha says her upcoming comedy will see her exploit her comic skills in entirety. "I have great comic timing, and nobody has tapped into that yet," says the actor, who will feature in Raaj Shaandilyaa's Janhit Mein Jaari. While noted comedians refer to it as a difficult genre to crack, Bharuccha perceives it to be "stress-free". "It is such a fun [genre]. If I stress about it, I will probably lose the sense of pleasure that must be associated with it. I will take to reading sessions with Raj and comprehend the character. Once I

crack that, I will be able to understand the film's tonality." Bharuccha assures cinephiles that female actors have rarely been seen portraying the kind of comedy that she will, in the film. "People are not used to seeing films front-lined by women, especially comedies. I am keen to see how Raj presents it. We will shoot in March."Omung Kumar's directorial venture stars Bharuccha alongside Pavail Gulati, who featured as Taapsee Pannu's husband in the film, Thappad.

Punjabi stint for Janhvi Kapoor

Following the play, it's now all work for Janhvi of the Tamil film, Kolamaavu Kokila (2018), directed by Siddharth Sengupta.A source from the unit says, "Janhvi will fly to Punjab for the film which will be shot over 45 days in a [bio] bubble. They roll on January 9, and plan to shoot across various regions. Even though in each location, a different set of restrictions are imposed, strict safety protocol will be maintained." Kapoor's version will not be a frameby-frame adaptation of the original, which was frontlined by Nayanthara, but will be amended to suit the tastes

of cinephiles across India, says the source. As a North Indian girl, Kapoor will be seen sporting minimal makeup. "Playing the part of a girl from a simple, middleclass family, she will be seen in braids and salwar-kurtas. It is also a coming-of-age movie of a girl who gets trapped in an extraordinary situation, and how she saves her family. In the process, she emerges resilient. There are a few action sequences for which Janhvi has been prepping."

Diljit Dosanjh in Ali Abbas Zafar's film on the '84 anti-Sikh riot?

Diljit Dosanjh has been painting his social media feed red with heartening pictures of his upcoming Punjabi film, Jodi, his debut production which apparently tells the tale of a duo in love. However, a spate of dramedies behind him, the actor is likely to take on a sombre avatar for his next, Ali Abbas Zafar's film on the '84 anti-Sikh riots.A source tells that Zafar will serve as a

creator on the project that rolls in Film City. "Since it is a period drama and set in the 80's, several details had to be incorporated while creating the set, which includes a chawl, and a two-storied building. They plan to roll by January 9," says the source, adding that the subject has been dear to Zafar, who had been toying with the idea for long. "He was keen to kick-start the year with this film, and has been personally looking into the set-designing." Zafar is also expected to commence work on his superhero film that is being headlined by Katrina Kaif. Meanwhile, Dosanjh, who usually steers clear of controversy, has hit headlines on more than one occasion in the lockdown, owing to his spat with Kangana Ranaut over the latter's comments on the farmers protests.

Can't afford a day off : Ranveer Singh

Amid the uncertainty brought about by the pandemic, several stories of individuals punching above their weight to help those in need did the rounds. Like several music industry veterans who offered a helping hand to struggling independent musicians, Ranveer Singh, via his music label, IncInk, ensured that the artistes under his fold were looked after well. The actor facilitated the making of nine songs in the last eight months so as to encourage his rappers. "When you make it your mission to discover new artistes and present them effectively to the world, you have to live by that pledge. 2020 has been a challenging year for the music industry, but, I am delighted that our company stayed on track to fulfil the promises that we made to these talented [singers]. We are a bunch of committed music lovers who are always trying to change the music industry. Our intent is to give India a new sound to listen to. For that to happen, we cannot even afford to take a day off," Singh said.Singh's label currently has hiphop artistes like Kaam Bhari, Spitfire, SlowCheeta and Devil The Rhymer on its roster, and is constantly on the lookout for new artistes. In the lockdown, it unveiled the songs Raw compilation, Vartalap isl x petition, Mehfil-e-hip hop, Tom nahi paayega rap, Isl shwapon, Black, Vichaar, White collar, and Aur karo. Singh, who is also advocating to make the Indian sign language the 23rd official language of the country, plans to give a platform to budding rappers to showcase the different Indian cultures.

Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation, and Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, have issued the following statement in response to the U.S. International Trade Commission’s (ITC) global safeguard investigations into the imports of blueberries. “The majority of Canada’s exports of fresh blueberries to the U.S. originate in British Columbia. Our province’s approximately 800 blueberry growers are facing a U.S. trade investigation that could impact their livelihoods. “The U.S. ITC could recommend tariffs or quotas if it finds U.S. blueberry growers are injured or are threatened to be injured by imports. In the meantime, B.C. growers face mounting legal fees and economic uncertainty. This impacts many of the hard-working people who rely on agriculture to provide for their families.

“The Government of British Columbia is working in partnership with the B.C. Blueberry Council and the Government of Canada to defend this industry. TITANREALESTATE.COM Is it better to invest in a TFSA or RRSP? (NC) We all want to save money on our taxes. And making contributions to government savings plans can help. You may decide to maximize your contribution to your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) prior to the March 1st deadline or contribute to your Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) or both. Choosing between the two can be a tough decision, and while both will help you save, the best option is going to depend on your financial situation and goals. Lisa Gittens, senior tax expert from H&R Block, shares some things to consider. Saving for the future. Anytime you make an investment, it’s good to identify exactly what you’re saving for. Putting away money for retirement is usually on a longer timeline than, say, your child’s education fund. Income earned in both plans is allowed to accumulate tax-free. Because of the more flexible withdrawal rules, TFSAs are typically used for shorterterm goals. Contribution limit. Don’t forget that there is a limit to how much you can contribute to either

PAGE 26

account, which changes each year. In 2021, the TFSA contribution limit is $6,000. For RRSPs, your contribution limit is based on 18 per cent of your earned income, to a maximum of $27,830. “If you don’t contribute the full amount you’re allowed in any one year, you can carry forward any unused contribution room, based on the set limits for each year,” says Gittens. To find out your limits, you can review last year’s Notice of Assessment on the CRA website. Withdrawals. With a TFSA, you can withdraw funds any time you like without any tax implications because your contributions are based on after-tax income. In contrast, contributions to a RRSP account are made with pre-tax dollars, so any withdrawals would be subject to tax. Tax deductions. Contributions to TFSAs have no impact on your tax situation. However, RRSPs are tax deductible, reducing your income tax payable. “If you contribute to your RRSP before the March 1 deadline of this year, you can claim a deduction on your upcoming tax return” adds Gittens.

You are entering the next stage with something that took a new direction in late March. Much has likely changed in that time that could now see you questioning the level of responsibility you are prepared to take on. This could also be an opportunity for moving to a higher position. Priorities have altered in some way.

There has been a major shift when it comes commitments. Not all will necessarily be clear just yet because much can still be going on behind the scenes. It would be wise to contemplate just how much you are prepared to handle long term. That way you will be better prepared for opportunities that can come up without warning.

You can feel as though you have moved on, or need to, from heavy expectations placed on you by others. It will be easier for you to recognise where your own priorities and their expectations cause you problems. Be straightforward about what you want. The response you get will give you a clear idea of their true ideas.

More activity on a daily basis with others will be the case from now to early January. There could be some selfishness on their part, so be careful about the level of responsibility you could automatically take on. It is up to you to set some boundaries. This is something you will have to get used to for the next 3 years.

Major changes of direction involving other people in a substantial way are just beginning to take shape in your life. You could experience being recognised more because others are serious or prepared to make a commitment. It would be wise of you to consider, from now to early January, the level of independence you wish to maintain.

Now is the time to give serious consideration to something you would like to dramatically alter, mainly for pleasure or greater relaxation in the long term. There could be many details to work on for the next 3 years, as well as perhaps altering what have been daily routines. You will realise who it won’t please by early January.

New directions connected to other people that began around late March that have had an impact on you is now entering into a new stage that will become much clearer. It may not be easy to get your mind around it to begin with. It could make you realise that you need to make your own decisions based on what you will enjoy.

You have entered quite a serious cycle for the next 3 years when it comes to what is important to underpin your life. This can include family or your home. Any changes you have had to make to normal routines since July could be part of it. Something you may never have had to deal with before though, is rebellion from somebody else.

Something you expect to enjoy may not run smoothly. For this reason, you should not be tempted to spend more money than is absolutely necessary, especially if somebody else expects it. Taking communication in a social situation to a changed level than usual or generating different topics to discuss could work out very well.

Mercury, the planet of thought and communication has moved into your sign where it will remain until 8th January. This will likely see you thinking about the changes that have taken place in your life over the last 3 years. As a result, you can feel driven right now to lay down new foundations that will give you greater control.

Life has now set out on a path of major new directions on a personal level as you have just begun a new 30 year cycle, a new 12 year cycle, with a new 20 year cycle kicking in this week. You need to think about what is important to structure in your life from now to early January. You now have greater mental determination than ever.

You are going to have to get used to many things happening at a slow pace. You will get a window of opportunity to move things forward from mid May to late July next year. You should put any alternative ideas forward this week but be prepared to deal with challenges. This might be connected to finances in some way.
