T

he COVID-19 pandemic has been very difficult for everyone and this is especially true for the South Asian communities as we all like to get together and be a part of a big family. This has been very difficult in the times when we are supposed to distance ourselves physically. Self-isolation can be particularly challenging and you may have feelings of loneliness, isolation and depression. Social distancing does not have to mean social isolation. Learning ways to connect with family and friends virtually can help. You can still be connected to your support systems via phone, zoom, whatsapp etc. It is really important to learn about resources and supports to help us take care of ourselves and our families

SURREY’S JUV KOONER SIGNS WITH PORTUGUESE SOCCER TEAM S.C. BRAGA By: Jasleen Bains (@_jasleenbains)

Surrey-raised Juvraj (“Juvy”) Kooner remembers when his dad, who introduced him to soccer, first took him to BC Place to watch David Beckham play with LA Galaxy against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

“Although I was only 5 years old, the competitive environment, and being able to watch professional players play soccer in person sparked an interest in me and pushed me to continue playing soccer in hopes that one day, I would be in their position.”

This event, he explains, was a memorable moment from his childhood that Now that dream has become a realpushed him to pursue soccer. ity, as Juvy has signed a three-year contract with S.C. Braga, a professional soccer team in Portugal.

This is certainly no small feat, and Juvy has been receiving a significant amount of media attention and praise for his accomplishment. “The amount of love and support I have been receiving through social media has been amazing: the encouragement from people all over has been unexpected, but I am beyond grateful to now have this extensive

support system cheering me on throughout my journey.” The road to reaching this level of success however, has not been easy. The 19-year-old has faced numerous hurdles, including an ACL injury last season. “At first, this injury affected me negatively and it was difficult not being at the physical level [that] I was before. Over time, this injury allowed me to look at things in a different perspective and throughout my time in rehab, I believe I grew as an athlete in a way [that] I wouldn’t have been able to on the field.” Like many professional athletes, Juvy says he owes a lot of his suc- “Although it’s hard not being around cess to his community and support my family at times, I left Surrey when I was 15 and have now adapted to it. systems. Students and staff at Shortreed Community Elementary school in Aldergrove will be better protected in the event of an earthquake, thanks to planned seismic upgrades. “All parents and families deserve to send their children to school with the comfort of knowing that if an earthquake hits, students will be protected,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Education. “From day one, investing in school seismic safety has been a priority for our government, and we will continue our work to improve seismic safety in schools across the province.” Government is providing $8.9 million for seismic upgrades at Shortreed elementary. Construction will begin in September 2021. The project is expected to be complete in early

2023. Students will remain on site in portables while the work is underway. “Langley families strongly support projects that increase the safety of our district schools. Our government continues to invest in projects to ensure the safety of the staff and students in our schools,” said Megan Dykeman, MLA for Langley East. “This important seismic upgrade of Shortreed Community Elementary school will further protect students in the event of an earthquake.”

Letter to the Editor We often come across posts on social media and chat conversations on our phones that depict people through various scopes. However, with the increase in technology and social media outlets, there has also been an increase in photos and videos that go viral and convey a message that isn’t necessarily true. An example of this is where a photo is taken of an individual and cropped onto another person to make it seem like that per-

son is doing something wrong, such being involved in a relationship with someone other than their partner. The photo could be fake but with advances in technology and apps it may appear to look legitimate in the eyes of others. Many relationships have come to an end due to others spreading and making fake posts on social media. It is important to know what is accurate and legitimate before jumping to any conclusions.

I am New to Canada and I Have Been Involved in a Car Accident Can I Make a Claim?

C

ar accidents are stressful. That stress is increased if you are new to Canada when the accident happens. Getting medical attention and navigating the Canadian insurance claim process can feel overwhelming. If you have been injured in a car accident in BC, you most likely can make a claim, but complicated legal issues may arise. You should consult with an experienced ICBC car accident lawyer as soon as possible to discuss your options and ensure you do not lose the right to make a claim. General Rules for Car Accident Injury Claims The general rule is that a person who has been injured in a car accident caused wholly or partially by someone else’s negligence has the right to make a claim. It is also generally true that the claim should be brought in the jurisdiction where the accident occurred and that the law of that jurisdiction should apply to the claim. So, for example, if a BC resident is injured in a car accident within the province that is caused by another BC resident, those general rules will apply. The claim is brought against the BC driver and compensation will be paid by ICBC, the mandatory vehicle insurer in the province, in accordance with BC law and insurance limits.

"It has been tough, fun, I have learned a lot. I have made some great friends along the way. I have met some fantastic people. I have been inspired by so many creative geniuses around me. I think it has been fantastic," she said.

I always yearn to do more : Shikha Talsania

Fresh off her recently completed film Jersey, Mrunal Thakur finds herself quizzed about why almost all her films are opposite stars. Finding herself in a conflicted situation, the actor reasons aloud, "When I was younger and new to the industry, I was told to do more films with superstars. Now I am being accused of that very thing. I

People are eager to watch films in theatres : Anil Kapoor

Actor Anil Kapoor, who has projects across genres lined up in 2021, hopes the year ahead is good for all, including the film fraternity.Kapoor is currently garnering good response and reviews for his role in "AK Vs AK", which released digitally and co-stars Anurag Kashyap.Talking about the response to the Vikramaditya Motwane directorial, Kapoor said "When people like your film and your performance, you feel good. So, I am glad that people liked the film." On the industry gradually opening up, he added: "There are few films that are made for the big screen only. There are a few films of mine that are going to be released this year, so I hope audiences watch those films in theatres. I am sure about that because people are eager to watch films in theatres. There are few films that give you the same joy on the big screen and on OTT platforms, and 'AK Vs AK' is one of those films." "Now that vaccine has also been approved by the government, so I pray that theatres will reopen with the same capacity as they used to. I hope this year people watch films in theatres. I have a positive approach to life and, God willing, everything will be fine. I definitely feel 2021 will be a great year for everyone including the film fraternity," he added.

don't function as per the star system of the industry. I have always gone purely by the script. I have auditioned and landed my parts fair and square." Thakur elaborates that on one hand, she is featuring opposite Shahid Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar in Jersey and Toofan respectively, and on the other hand she will be starring with Abhimanyu Dassani in Aankh Micholi and Ishaan Khatter and Priyanshu Painyuli in Pippa. She explains, "There are these unsubstantiated industry norms that I have worked hard to defy. Every time a script comes to me, I ask myself — how does this help me as an actor? I am well-aware that one can't go far merely leaning on superstars, these days. You need to have the merit to rub shoulders with the vast plethora of talent out there. I am glad that I am working as an actor now when the star system is changing to give way to talented people. I have always believed that any actor is as good as their stories and I am working on choosing well."

Telugu star Nabha Natesh is on cloud nine. Her recent release, Solo Brathuke So Better, has opened to a good response at the theatres. What makes it all the more special is that this was the first film to release in theatres post lockdown."I am so happy and grateful for the love audience has showered on my film. I was eagerly waiting to see the audience's reaction," said a visibly happy Nabha. Even as the film does good business, Nabha's character Amrutha is being liked by viewers. Her acting is receiving special attention of the fans.Even as many films have been releasing on OTT amid the closure of cinema halls owing to Covid lockdown, Nabha feels going to theatres is more than just an outing."It's a wholesome magical experience. It is not just about going to the theatres -- going there, booking tickets, ordering popcorn and watching something on a huge screen is a very different experience. It's magical and has so much more grandeur," she says. The talented actor's career has been soaring ever since she starred in the 2019 sci-fi action drama, iSmartShankar. Apart from good

roles, how important is it for her to be positively critiqued? "It matters to me how my performance is reviewed but more than that I focus on how much my audience loves my work and if I am able to entertain the fans or not, " she shares.Bollywood dreams? "Things have started getting back to normal now in the film industry. I am in talks with some filmmakers, but would like to comment only at the right time, " She says.

We all get stereotyped as actors : Arshad Warsi

Arshad Warsi feels it is easy to get stereotyped as an actor, and very difficult to break away from it. The actor says he has managed to evade the image trap despite his overwhelming popularity in comic roles only because his serious roles were equally loved."It is difficult (to break away from stereotypes). We all get stereotyped -- all of us do, every actor does. That's how it is. You do a certain role or you do something that people enjoy, and then that is what you keep getting because that is ringing the box office," Arshad said."It becomes difficult to get out of it. Fortunately for me, I've managed to do that purely because people have enjoyed my serious acting as well as my comedy," he added. The actor continued: "Usually, when somebody does comedy, a lot of (his/her) serious roles don't work because you can't get that person out of the

head."Opening up about his way of doing it, Arshad said: "I tend to get into the character so much that I make you forget who I am. I make you forget what my previous one was, and that works for me. In 'Asur', people just accepted me in such a serious role as a forensic scientist. And then ‘Durgamati: The Myth' was on the same lines, I got to do something completely different from what I'm usually offered, which is a breath of fresh air and it feels wonderful."Before entering Bollywood as an actor, Arshad worked as an assistant director and choreographed a song for the 1993 film "Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja". He made his acting debut in 1996 with "Tere Mere Sapne", which was a box office success. Over the years, he has impressed the audience and critics alike with varied characters in films like the "Munna Bhai" series, the "Ishqiya" films, the "Golmaal" series, "Dhamaal", "Jolly LLB" and "Seher".

3 tips for a more restful 2021 (NC) We all know that sleep has tremendous benefits, from boosting immune systems, to reducing stress, and improving memory. Here are three simple tips to help you get sensational slumber in 2021. While some tips are obvious, like avoiding caffeine and food late at night and getting exercise during the day, one of the most effective tips is also one of the least adhered to — establishing a routine. Be consistent. Our body’s rhythm can operate like it’s on a loop. While maintaining consistent sleep patterns can result in a person waking up at exactly the same time every day, inconsistent sleep patterns — fostered by going to bed late on the weekends, for example — can interrupt these patterns. That inconsistency can lead to restless sleep. Pay attention to your skin. TV style and beauty expert, Liv Judd, says we often overlook the fact that our largest organ is our skin. Judd recommends

incorporating a consistent bedtime skin-care routine that includes products with hyaluronic acid to hydrate and soothe the skin. “Many nighttime treatments not only help with relaxation but also include collagen and retinol, which are used to reduce fine lines and improve overall skin tone. These hard-working, multitasking treatments are easily found at stores like your local Shoppers Drug Mart,” Judd says.

Life is beginning to change gear from where it has sat since late June. Focus on your finances to early March and don’t be tempted to do any impulsive spending right now. It could be difficult to clearly define what your priorities need to be. This won’t become clear before mid March. There will still be restrictions to deal with.

Mars has just moved into your sign where it will remain until 4th March. This will end a long period of frustration from late June. Your energy level will lift and so will your self-confidence – you can begin to feel a new person. There can be different responsibilities to consider but don’t attempt to bed them down until mid March.

Your focus will naturally turn to the future and what is important in the long term. To be able to get there it will be essential to let things go or clear away the unnecessary, otherwise, it will be a source of limitation. You probably realise that. If you work on this to early March you will be in a decisive position by mid March.

New directions associated with other people, even new people coming into your life has much more to it than is evident on the surface. You could feel it is a welcome change with a degree of excitement attached. They can be far more determined than you suspect. Don’t modify your priorities to accommodate their wishes.

You can be under a lot of pressure to early March, some of which will come up suddenly and will not be evident right now. Something about daily routines needs to take a new direction so that you can be more efficient and effective. You can enjoy making these changes to early February. Take care of your health as well.

You can feel freed up from the expectations of others that may have weighed heavily since late June. There is the opportunity to look at future possibilities from a perspective you had never imagined. This could be at odds with daily routines or obligations. You need to be honest about what is too much from now to mid March.

Optimistic plans, particularly if they are connected to leisure or pleasure could run into unexpected difficulty because it doesn’t please somebody else. This might make you realise that the time has come to put plans into place in a new way – one that suits what you want and bypass their pressure. Let them take it or leave it.

Relationships with others will be interesting to early March. There will be a degree of unpredictability or rebelliousness on their part. It can be a new normal that you will need to deal with that can alter the structure of your life. Much can be based on new ideas. By being open to them you could establish some stimulating interaction.

There will be a lot to think about, communicate about or find information on from now to mid March. Get to work on getting good routines in place up to early March. This can also include health and exercise. You can be easily distracted and while this may not cause too much of a problem now, you will regret any time wasting.

The New Moon falls into your sign with Pluto, generating a powerful undertone to any new beginnings on a personal level that will have a strong transformative effect. Venus is in your sign until the 2nd February encouraging you to pursue whatever you feel will bring peace, balance and harmony even if you need to rebel in some way.

You could have a sense of urgency about moving forward towards getting a solid underlying plan in place. There are still some unknown factors that will unfold over the next month. This can alter the way you are thinking about things right now and up to early March. It will be mid March before final solutions become obvious.

New directions can take shape either with friends or a group of people that you are involved with. This could equally relate to joining a new group in which sharing of ideas or learning something new could be the theme. Be mindful of only taking on as much as you can easily manage, otherwise you could feel restricted later.

erations are included when making decisions that affect them and their livelihood. The data are essential to defend the interests of farmers and the agriculture industry in trade disputes and to ensure market access. They provide fact-based evidence to inform government decisions regarding financial support programs for Canadian farmers. They also help to measure the impacts of disease outbreaks and climate change (such as fires, floods, droughts and storms). The 2021 version of the census is almost here, and there are a few things Canadian farm operators should know. In early May, all Canadian farmers will receive an invitation letter with easy-to-follow instructions on how to complete the questionnaire online. To best support farmers at this busy time of year and to help reduce their reporting burden, concrete steps have been taken to make the 2021 questionnaire quicker and easier for them to respond. This means that only questions relevant to each operator’s farm will be asked when filling out the census questionnaire online. It also means that selected questions may be replaced using high-quality alternative data sources when available. Find more information at census.gc.ca. PAGE 29
