BCEHS, under the day-to-day leadership of Leanne Heppell, interim chief ambulance officer, has been working hard to roll out changes to its staffing model throughout the province, to improve services to patients and stabilize paramedic staffing, especially in rural and remote communities.

“When we call 911 for help, British Columbians need to feel confident that help is on the way and that it will arrive quickly,” said Dix. “The significant progress made by BC Emergency Health Services over the summer will ensure a more effective ambulance service for patients and families who depend on it. Better support for paramedics and dispatchers will help them do the vital work we count on every day.” Chu said: “Since I was appointed BCEHS board chair, I have been busy visiting with paramedics, dispatch staff, other BCEHS employees and union representatives, and meeting with our partners in emergency services. Probiotics Foods with probiotics, such as kefir and yogurt, can benefit our gut and immune health. Be sure to look for the word “probiotic” on the label, as this is a regulated term. Try including more of these foods by having yogurt parfaits, using yogurt in dips and adding kefir to your morning smoothie. Tip: Try yogurt bark for an easy onthe-go breakfast. Simply spread probiotic yogurt on a parchment-lined baking sheet and add toppings of your choice, such as berries, bananas, honey and chocolate. Freeze for two to three hours or until firm. People in communities throughout B.C. will soon benefit from better cycling, pedestrian and other activetransportation infrastructure that will safely connect neighbourhoods to parks, schools and town centres.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “These projects will improve community health, affordability and safety, so people of all ages and abilities can benefit from cleaner air and better connections.”

“Climate action must include investments in infrastructure that enable people to choose environmentally friendly modes of travel that are critical to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, like walking, biking and rolling,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of State for Infrastructure. “These safe transportation options protect the environment, connect communities and are key to B.C.’s recovery plan and our commitment to climate action.”

The funding will also help 29 additional Indigenous and local governments develop active-transportation network plans that align with the B.C. Active Transportation Design Guide. Network plans are an eligibility requirement for infrastructure funding through the grant program. The District of Invermere and the Shuswap Indian Band received a joint network planning grant in 2020. This year, the District of Invermere will receive $500,000 to make safety enhancements to a 550-metre multi-use trail that serves all Invermere schools. It also connects with regional trail systems, making it safer for people to choose active modes of getting around.

Thirty-three Indigenous and local governments will receive funding for projects that align with provincial priorities to increase the number of people walking and cycling, as well as improving the safety and health of vulnerable road users, community connectivity, accessibility, tourism and “The District of Invermere is excited and thankful for the continued supclimate change mitigation. port we have received for active“We know that people are enthusiastic transportation projects in and around about using active transportation as an our community,” said Al Miller, mayor affordable, safe, climate-friendly and of Invermere. “A healthy and safe enjoyable way to get around,” said Rob multi-use pathway upgrade, directly Fleming, Minister of Transportation servicing our neighbourhoods, comand Infrastructure. “That’s why we’re making these investments in safe bike munity schools and connecting the routes, walking paths and other local Invermere trail system with regional active-transportation infrastructure. trail networks is a giant positive and This program is one of many ways will be used and appreciated by many we’re working to create more liveable on a daily basis.”

Provincial support helps boost community literacy Children and their families throughout British Columbia will continue to benefit from local literacy programs with support from the annual Raisea-Reader campaign Sept 17-24. “Reading and literacy skills give children the building blocks to be successful in school and in life,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “The Raise-a-Reader campaign creates awareness about literacy and opens doors for children and families to access programs where they can learn essential literacy skills, make community connections and improve their quality of life. I offer my sincere thanks to our partner, Decoda Literacy Solutions, all of Raise-a-Reader’s literacy program providers, and all the supporters of the campaign. Your efforts make a difference every day in the lives of British Columbians.” The Vancouver Sun’s annual Raisea-Reader campaign supports literacy by increasing awareness and raising money to fund a range of virtual and in-person literacy programs offered through public libraries, Indigenous organizations, community literacy groups, schools and family resource centres. The provincial government is contributing $500,000 to this year’s campaign. The Province supports literacy in partnership with Decoda Literacy Solutions, which provides resources, training and funds to support community-based literacy and learning initiatives in communities throughout British Columbia.

he Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Wednesday two executive promotions for its westernmost club, the Fraser Valley Bandits, promoting Dylan Kular from vice president to president and Andrew Savory from director of operations to vice president. Kular and Savory joined the organization in July and October 2018, respectively, and have worked in tandem with CEBL head office to develop a community footprint in the Fraser Valley that has seen the Bandits consistently perform among the league’s best in per game attendance, open the league’s flagship CEBL Academy at the TELUS Bandits Athletic Centre in Abbotsford and earn trips to the CEBL finals and semifinals in 2020 and 2021. “The CEBL is thrilled to announce these promotions in the Fraser Valley. Dylan has been a steadfast leader and has built a dedicated front office and roster that have proven their capabilities both on the court and in the business community. The Bandits are a committed and engaged cornerstone of the Fraser Valley and I look forward to Dylan and Andrew taking the Bandits to even greater heights ahead of what will be an exciting 2022 season,” said CEBL commissioner and CEO Mike Morreale. The CEBL became the first Canadian professional sports league to return to play following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic when it commenced and executed the CEBL Summer Series in July-August 2020. In 2021, the Bandits built upon this historic feat by becoming the first professional sports team in B.C. to welcome fans back in stands on July 14. The soldout affair set the stage for three consecutive regular season sellouts hosted at Abbotsford Centre by the Bandits, as well as a sold-out quarterfinal postseason 104-84 victory against the Guelph Nighthawks on Aug. 15. Kular was previously named vice president in September 2019. Since stepping into the role, Kular has hired current general manager, Kyle Julius, who led the Bandits to the champion-

Richmond Mayor, Councillors and others visiting Gurdwara Nanak Niwas

India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas, 8600 Number 5 Road, Richmond is proud to be an active member of the South Asian community and the City of Richmond. It has always taken an active role in the betterment of the community. Whenever there is a need for help it is there. Take for example, Richmond Hospital Foundation’s appeal for help. Richmond hospital sorely needs a new acute care tower. Consequently, Richmond Hospital Foundation has been actively involved in raising funds for this project. In that context, it invited Gurdwara Nanak Niwas to participate. The Gurdwara management and congregation were very generous and raised close to $50,000 for the hospital. The Richmond Hospital Foundation and hospital officials were very thankful to the management committee and the congregation of the Gurdwara for their generosity. As a gesture of goodwill, the hospital administration agreed to our request for Punjabi language signage in the hospital. Now the entire Richmond Hospital has Punjabi signage throughout. Gurdwara Nanak Niwas tries to maintain good relationship not only with the hospital officials but also with the City of Richmond, Richmond RCMP and other organizations in the community. With this objective in mind the Gurdwara management used to invite their representatives for Langar at the Gurdwara occasionally. In this regard the Gurdwara officials were pleased to invite representatives of these organizations and the City of

Richmond for Langar on Tuesday, September 14. The main objective was to thank them for the work they are doing in serving this community. It is due to the efforts of these people that Richmond is considered to be the healthiest, cleanest, most multicultural, well managed and one of the safest communities in BC. They deserve our thanks for all of their hard work and dedication. Thus, it was a privilege for us to thank them all on behalf of the management committee and congregation of Gurdwara Nanak Niwas. On behalf of the City of Richmond, Mayor Malcolm Brodie thanked the Gurdwara management for this nice gesture and assured his and City’s full co-operation. Similarly, Richmond RCMP Police Chief, Superintendent Will Ng thanked the Gurdwara management for its ongoing support and co-operation. In the same vein, Richmond Hospital/ Foundation’s Vice president Candace Hernandez also expressed her sincere thanks and appreciation to the Gurdwara management and its congregation. This kind of mutual co-operation goes a long way in keeping the lines of communication open and helping each other. Some of the other community well-wishers of Gurdwara Sahib also expressed their thanks and appreciation before enjoying a delicious vegetarian lunch (Langar). Both of us have promising parts : Saif Ali Khan

Almost two decades after Saif Ali Khan featured alongside Hrithik Roshan in Na Tum Jaano Na Hum — which marked Esha Deol’s industry debut — the duo will be seen together in Vikram Vedha. Set to play a cop alongside

Roshan, who features as a gangster, Khan says their roles are well demarcated. “Both of us

Hindi cinema - more than I expected : Shikha Talsania Theatre and film actress Shikha Talsania, the daughter of veteran actor Tiku Talsania, says that even though she feels alive while performing on stage, she has a lot of gratitude for the opportunity she has got in cinema and web series. Asked about being an established theatre actress, what cinema has given her and Shikha Talsania said: “I would say Hindi cinema has given me more than what I expected, really. See, I am an actress, and nothing is more exciting for me than acting. Of course, when it comes to the stage, I have a sense of belonging there but acting on-screen is different than that of live performance. And there is a power and entertaining factor in cinema. There is no comparison. “As an artiste, I look for and grab every opportunity to perform in every avenue given. Also, during the pandemic, when there was no stage show, no rehearsals, theatre actors especially are going through a different level of crisis, we also saw how through art and entertainment, we managed to remain hopeful. So many films and web series have been released on OTT. Under a crisis, if a film, a show, even for one moment sparks hope in the

In the web series ‘Potluck’ her portrayal got appreciation. The show also features an ensemble cast of Cyrus Sahukar, Harman Singha, Ira Dubey, Jatin Sial, Kitu Gidwani among others. Throughout the year, Shikha missed being on a film set. Also sitting with her teammates, co-actors for the rehearsals for her stage plays. have great parts. I will give my best shot, and I know Hrithik will too. It will be a treat for viewers. I am looking forward to working with him. We are excited because it is a wonderful film. The original Tamil version did well, and the same directors are at the helm for our version.” While he has watched the original, Khan is keen to add his own flavour to his character. Set to essay the part played by R Madhavan in the original, he says, “Madhavan was fantastic. I am trying to get [rid of his portrayal] so that I can play it in my own way. I will have to recreate it.”

Tamannaah Bhatia looks for challenges

Tamannaah Bhatia in her recent Telugu release ‘Maestro’ is drawing appreciation from the audience. Talking about picking the right projects, she says like every artiste, she too likes challenges. “As an actor, you are always hungry for challenging roles which allow you to expand your range,” says the actress, who plays a negative character in the Telugu remake of Bollywood flick ‘Andhadhun’. ‘Maestro’ also stars Nithiin and Nabha Natesh in lead roles. Talking about her role, which was played by Tabu in the Hindi version, Tamannaah Bhatia says: “With ‘Maestro’, I had a lot to play with while performing on the set. Because a genre like thriller needs a balance between what you know and what you want your audience to know. Also, a character as twisted as Simran gives you enough fodder to work with. I am ecstatic to know that the audience is loving my interpretation of the character.”

I'm having more fun now : Lara Dutta

Lara Dutta Bhupathi has been in the Hindi film industry for 18 years and she says she is having more fun now than she did in her 20s as an actor. Lara said: “I am very content with what my journey has been like. I have seen all phases and angles of the industry. I came in from being a Miss Universe to having an opportunity to work in a film like ‘Andaaz’. “Had success from right at the start. Just having the opportunity to work with some of the best names in

the industry. It’s been incredible to have that kind of a repertoire.” She is grateful to the filmmakers she has got a chance to work with. “I found my genres that I preferred quite early in my career and comedy really worked for me.” The 43-year-old actress feels she found success in the comedy genre with films such as ‘No Entry’, ‘Bhaagam Bhaag’ and ‘Partner’ among many others. She says it has “been tremendously fulfilling”. Lara Dutta Bhupathi is married to tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi. She is thankful that the industry gave her the opportunity to pause when she needed to when she had her daughter. The actress is also happy about women of all age groups getting meaty roles in Bollywood.
