New master of applied science in engineering program to open for northern B.C. students Students in northern B.C. will be able to earn a master of applied science in engineering degree, which is the first of its kind to be offered in B.C.’s northern region. “We’re thrilled to be expanding postgraduate education in the North so students can study closer to home,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training. “This long-awaited engineering program opens doors to new career paths and good-paying jobs for students. At the same time, it answers the needs of local employers and will spur economic development in northern B.C.” The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) in Prince George is offering the program as a researchbased degree and focuses on managing engineering challenges and needs specific to cold environments. As the only program of its kind in B.C.’s North, it expands science, technol-

ogy, engineering and math opportunities within the region and ensures high-tech programs are available to students outside major urban centres. This degree program expands UNBC’s engineering student spaces by 30, with an additional 15 graduates per year, helping more students access promising careers. “This new master of applied science program is the next step in advancing engineering education in northern B.C.,” said Geoff Payne, interim president, UNBC. “Working under the supervision of UNBC’s exceptional school of engineering faculty, students in this program will acquire expertise in their chosen area of specialization and create knowledge that will contribute to the discovery of solutions that will have impacts locally and globally.”

northern British Columbia. These additional engineering seats mean Prince George tech businesses will have a greater supply of advanced engineering graduates in the area.

“More people in northern B.C. will be given the opportunity to pursue a career in the tech sector through the new UNBC master of applied science – engineering degree program,” said Brenda Bailey, Parliamentary Secretary for Technology and Innovation. “I look forward to seeing how the graduates of this program will Of the 75,000 job openings in tech- use their expertise to address chalrelated fields anticipated in the next lenges in northern B.C. and around decade, 2,200 are expected to be in the world.”

The 30-credit degree program builds on UNBC’s existing engineering degrees: master of engineering in integrated wood design, and two bachelor of applied science (BASc) degrees. One is in civil engineering and the other in environmental engineering. UNBC also offers a joint BASc degree in environmental engineering with the University of British Columbia. PAGE 3

Provincewide booster dose is next step in COVID-19 immunization plan More people in B.C. will start to receive invitations for a COVID-19 booster shot as the Province continues its COVID-19 immunization plan, prioritizing B.C.’s elderly and most at-risk through to the December holiday. The plan expands to include all British Columbians 12+ beginning in January 2022. People 70+ who are registered in the Get Vaccinated System, as well as Indigenous Peoples 12+, will soon be invited to book their booster, which will help maintain protection against COVID-19. Booster doses are underway for other priority groups, including residents of long-term care and assisted living facilities and vulnerable people living in shelters or high-risk congregate settings, and are in use as part of outbreak management. “Our vaccines are highly effective. However, we are starting to see a gradual decline in protection over time. As a result, we are taking the proactive step of expanding boosters to everyone in our province,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer. “We’re starting with the people who need them most to continue to do all we can to keep people in B.C. safe from this virus and its variants.”

pating pharmacies. The call centre will also continue to be available for those who can’t book online. Walk-ins are not available for booster shots. “This continues to be the largest and most complex immunization program in our province’s history. With every dose we administer, we’re keeping ourselves, our families, and our communities safer,” said Dr. Penny Ballem, head of B.C.’s Immunization Program. “As it always has, B.C.’s immunization plan will consider people’s different needs and different ways of accessing information and will ensure nobody eligible to receive the booster dose is left behind.” Health authorities will once again schedule whole-of-community immunization clinics in collaboration with the First Nation Health Authority (FNHA) to provide boosters to rural and remote Indigenous communities. Indigenous Peoples in urban settings will also be offered vaccines through health authority clinics, pharmacies or in their local communities with assistance from FNHA. Vaccinations for children five to 11 are subject to Health Canada approval and are anticipated to be coming soon. The vaccine program for children ages five to 11 will draw on a separate supply of vaccine designed for children and will be delivered in parallel to the booster program. In the meantime, parents can register their child now in advance at: getvaccinated.gov.bc.ca

As was the case with the first and second doses, the timing of invitations is based on risk and age (beginning oldest to youngest), with an interval of between six to eight months from the second dose. Quick Facts: “Everyone who has received their first and second doses who wants a booster shot will receive one,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “People at highest risk of serious illness will go first, and I encourage everyone to get their vaccines, first dose, second dose and booster when it is time, to protect the ones we love the most and to put this pandemic behind us.”

•As of Oct. 25, 2021, 90,425 third doses have been administered in B.C.

Boosters will be delivered in health authority public-health community clinics and by participating pharmacies around the province. As with Dose 1 and 2, people who are registered with the Get Vaccinated System will receive an invitation to book their booster shot when it’s their turn. People can use their invitation to schedule their booster appointment in health authority clinics or at partici-

•Health authorities and pharmacies will continue to focus on flu clinics through the fall, in addition to delivering COVID-19 boosters, as well as planning for the anticipated approval of vaccines for five-to-11-year olds (Dose 1 and 2).

•Individuals will be offered a booster dose between six months to eight months after Dose 2. •All booster doses will be mRNA vaccines. Those who received AstraZeneca for the first or second dose will receive Moderna or Pfizer for the booster.

• More than 90% of British Columbians are registered in B.C.’s Get Vaccinated system.

Medical, emergency and rail personnel work together to transfer patient from landslide It took planes, trains and automobiles to transfer a seriously injured patient from Fraser Canyon Hospital in Hope. The patient urgently needed a higher level of care. With access severed by landslides and floodwaters, and high winds affecting air transport, two critical care physicians and a respiratory therapist from Surrey Memorial Hospital packed supplies and medication and drove to the Fraser Valley yesterday (Monday). They were joined by an emergency physician from Fraser Canyon Hospital, who met them in Abbotsford. The group gathered additional medication to support the Fraser Canyon Hospital and long-term care residents in the Hope area.

The mini-ICU team then boarded a CN track vehicle, with CN driving slowly along rail lines with debris alongside. The medical team at Fraser Canyon Hospital stabilized the patient but knew they needed a higher level of care and transport as soon as possible. The two physicians and respiratory therapist from Surrey were able to support the medical team at the hospital until an air ambulance arrived, early Tuesday. The patient was flown by air ambulance to a Lower Mainland hospital and is stable.

Fraser Health would like to thank everyone who made this transfer posFirst responders escorted the group on sible, including first responders, CN back roads, where they met up with CN Rail employees, and BC Emergency Rail staff in Chilliwack. Health Services.

Commission to recommend protections for forestry workers A new commission will provide advice on strengthening the longterm stability of jobs and economic recovery in B.C.’s forestry industry.

review of the Labour Relations Code, which identified forestry industry successorship protections as an area that needed further consultation, study and analysis.

Government has appointed an industrial inquiry commission (IIC) to recommend ways to protect workers when contract tendering and the transfer of cutting and timber-harvesting rights fall outside of section 35 of the Labour Code. Section 35 ensures that the collective bargaining rights of employees are protected when a business or part of it is sold, leased, transferred or otherwise disposed of.

Strengthening successorship protections aligns with the broader collaborative work happening across government on forestry. The commission will use the review’s recommendations as a starting point for its research. Its findings will help guide future labour relations decision-making on union successorship issues in the forestry sector.

“This commission is the first step in improving protections for impacted workers. We need fair and reasonable approaches to update contract tendering and, in turn, to increase job security,” said Harry Bains, Minister of Labour. “From my personal experience working in the forestry industry, I know it’s tough work and workers deserve to have their collective agreement terms and conditions protected.” Bains has appointed Vince Ready and Amanda Rogers to form the commission. Ready has nearly 40 years’ experience in arbitration and mediation in numerous sectors, including forestry. Rogers is an arbitrator, mediator and lawyer specializing in workplace conflict resolution. The terms of reference for the commission’s scope of work include delivering a final report and recommendations to government by Feb. 10, 2022.

“As part of our new vision for forestry, we are committed to ensuring workers benefit from sustainable, innovative jobs for generations to come,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. “By striking this commission, we’re taking our next step to help build a diversified and inclusive forestry sector that provides good, family-supporting jobs across the province.”

In June 2021, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development released the intentions paper, Modernizing Forest Policy in B.C.: Setting the Intention and Leading the Forest Sector with a new vision for B.C.’s forests. The intentions paper included a commitment to protect good jobs and support workers by considering the role of labour in tenure transfers, continuing to ensure the Forming the IIC builds on the sustainability of contractors and recommendations government re- advancing the need for an indusceived from the 2018 independent trial inquiry commission.

Crews have made progress in clearing Highway 7 between Agassiz and Hope, and the highway will reopen in a limited capacity at 5 p.m., Wednesday, November 17.

This opening will be limited to westbound traffic only and is only open to passenger vehicles. The intent of this opening is to allow those people stranded in Hope to make their way toward the Lower Mainland.

Hope, Highway 7 will be closed again between Agassiz and Hope so crews can continue to work on the highway. However, emergency services vehicles will continue to have access.

The Ministry of Education is contributing $115,000 this year and has confirmed a partnership with the BC Lions for the next three years, on a series of anti-racism workshops in BC schools.

The BC Lions will report to the ministry with student survey results and lessons learned by the end of the 2021-22 school year. “It’s an unfortunate truth that anyone from sports superstars to students can be the targets of race-based discrimination and it is completely unacceptable,” said Rachna Singh, Parliamentary Secretary for AntiRacism Initiatives. “We are cheering on students, staff, the BC Lions and all partners who are ready and willing to stand up against hate, discrimination and racism in our schools and in our neighbourhoods.”

BC Lions players will deliver student presentations between February and May 2022 aimed at grades 6 to 10. The presentations will explore and engage students on anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion, sharing personal experiences and facilitating conversations in at least 20 schools. Finalise any matter with somebody else that does not fall in line with priorities that are important to you. If they are not willing to accept certain obligations, you need to take that seriously. It will be difficult for you to know exactly where you stand up to mid December. Your independence being challenged could be highly frustrating.

Creative ideas you have for the future will very likely need modification due to the determined desires of somebody else. Part of it might be that your thoughts are not detailed enough or that you do not realise the amount of work involved. You could come up with new ways of doing things and fine-tune them up to mid December.

New directions either associated with somebody else or that they want to take could be a surprise to you and perhaps disappointing. You will certainly be up against a strong level of determination that will be more than equal to your tendency to lean more on the inflexible side. Communication is the key up to the 25th November.

Anything you have been planning and detailing since September can now start to open up quite easily. This can take your creativity to a new level and you can look forward to gaining much pleasure from all this effort up to mid December. Pressure that may have been applied by somebody else could come to an end right now.

Interaction with others either on a work or personal level can increase but you need to be mindful of jobs that need to be finished up. The need to structure things quite differently can arise unexpectedly. This could include home or family matters. None of this will happen instantly but needs to be focussed on until mid December.

You can finally turn away from the focus on finances that has been necessary since September. You can feel much freer on a daily basis. You can turn your mind to more interesting subjects to 25th November. With this can come an altered view of what is important in the long term as well as investigating the options available.

Many changes involving your finances can take place to mid December. This could also include job opportunities or changes of direction within a job. The decisions you make need to be your own. Anything very out of the ordinary suggested by somebody else might have suited them, but not necessarily you. Investigate.

Life is taking off in new directions in a big way for you with the New Moon occurring in your sign this week and Mars stimulating a new 2 year cycle from now to 13th December. You will be in a better position to be able to make decisions on personal matters as well, after having been held back one way or another since September.

You will need a lot of patience from now to mid December. New directions can be establishing themselves but exactly what it is all about will not come to the first stage of some enlightenment or you being in a position to make some decisions until 25th November. Until then it will be best that you sit back and observe.

Letting go of something that you have been committed to, perhaps for a long time, could benefit you financially. Social interaction could suddenly pick up in unexpected ways. You could also become involved with a new group of people either with work or socially and from this could develop some new friendships.

You could finally see some freedom looming in the long term or gain mental clarity on what it is you should be aiming towards. New commitments can arise that were not planned. This does not necessarily mean you have to accept all responsibilities attached. It is important you think about yourself and what you want to manage.

You could finally realise how to move forward after many challenges of processes with somebody else since September. It could generate a very positive attitude in moving forward this week. This can result an optimistic view of what is possible in the long term from now to mid December. It will prepare for new beginnings next year.

After success of 'Dilbar', to return as Dilruba feels great : Nora Actress Nora Fatehi, who is all set to feature in yet another another foot-tapping dance number in ‘Satyamev Jayate 2’ titled ‘Kusu Kusu’, says after the success of ‘Dilbar in the first installment of the film’, to be able to return as Dilruba for the track ‘Kusu kusu’ feels really great. Turning into the lucky charm for John Abraham, Nora collaborates with the actor yet again after ‘Dilbar’, ‘O Saki Saki’ and ‘Rock Tha Party’ while the actress marks her hat-trick with filmmaker Milap Zaveri post ‘Dilbar ’ and ‘Ek Toh Kam Zindagani’. Talking about returning to the franchise, Nora Fatehi shares, “‘Satyameva Jayate’ holds an extremely special place in my life and I am so glad to be a part of ‘Satyameva Jayate 2’ as well. After the success of Dilbar, to be able to return as Dilruba feels really great. She added: “I am thankful

to Milap, Nikkhil sir, and Bhushan sir for choosing me to be a part of this opportunity once again. And I am excited to present aKusu Kusu’ and really Director Milap Zaveri also expressed his excitement for Nora’s return. He added: “I’m thrilled after the iconic aDilbar’ and ‘Ek toh kam Zindagani’, to have Nora part of ‘Kusu Kusu’! She has been a lucky charm for me and her brilliance a n d talent have wowed the entire nation, in fact, the world who are die-hard fans of her beauty and dance.” He added: “I’m so grateful to her for continuing the tradition and being part of Satyameva Jayate 2.”

Book to be written on Mijwan's women : Shabana Azmi "I have a big paltan with me,” laughs Shabana Azmi, who is set to leave for Mijwan today. The actor, who has been unable to go to the Uttar Pradesh village since the onset of the pandemic last year, will be joined on the trip by brother Baba Azmi, his wife Tanvi and close collaborators at Mijwan Welfare Society, the NGO that works towards empowerment of the girl-child. Azmi has a series of initiatives to oversee during her weeklong stay in the village. “I am travelling to Mijwan after two years, though our work didn’t stop during the pandemic. We helped with two lakh vaccinations in UP and distributed 100 tonnes of food grains. [During this trip], Kakul Hai [Delhi University assistant professor] will interact with the villagers to write a book on the women of Mijwan. Neeraj Agarwal [CEO, Rural Shores Skills Academy] will train them in computer skills while MS Sathyu’s daughter Shaili is setting up a course in life skills and dramatics. My mother [Shaukat Kaifi] believed theatre played a key role in raising awareness on women’s empowerment and social justice. I am excited that Shaili will take forward the work my mother had started.” After the jam-packed week, Azmi will head to Delhi for the shoot of Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani.

Actress Malvika Raaj became famous for playing the younger version of Kareena Kapoor Khan's character 'Poo' in the film 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham'. A grown-up Malvika is now back in Bollywood with the film 'Squad'. She says she wishes Kareena watches her debut film. Malvika said "Since it is my first film as a

The box-office collection of Sooryavanshi has proved that the audience will head to the cinemas as long as they are assured of an entertaining film. Now, as makers line up one bigscreen release after another, Ayushmann Khurrana too is theatre-bound with Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui. While his last release Gulabo Sitabo (2020) was the first Hindi film to take the digital route amid the pandemic, the actor acknowledges that big screens have their own charm. “Many of my favourite memories are linked to me watching movies in a theatre. I’m happy that Hindi films are now set to make a big comeback in theatres,” he begins. Khurrana, having delivered eight back-to-back hits between 2017 and 2020, is considered the poster boy of content-driven cinema in Bollywood. Aware that the competition has intensified with the advent of OTT platforms, the actor insists that groundbreaking stories will drive the game.

leading lady, it would be such a joy for me if she watches the film and post about it on social media. I love her, and am a big fan. People still recall me as a young 'Poo' of 'K3G'. So I am wishing and keeping my fingers crossed if I see a post from Kareena on my film!" The film 'Squad' which is shot in Belarus, revolves around saving a child and the tussle between two forces. Asked if her popularity as a child actor helped her to get more film offers now, Malvika said, "No, I think I am starting from scratch because that was one side of me as a child actor people have seen. Now I am a grown-up, I look different, I am learning new skills in acting and working on my craft. This is also the first time I have tried my hand in action. So yes, a lot more to explore and this is just the beginning." Produced, directed and written by Nilesh Sahay, 'Squad' also features Rinzing Denzongpa, Pooja Batra, Mohan Kapur, Amit Gaur, Tanisha Dhillon, and Dishita Jain.

Longevity comes from embracing your age : Rani For someone who is recovering from a knee injury, Rani Mukerji is surprisingly upbeat as she promotes Bunty Aur Babli 2. The wacky energy of her film and the fact that it reunites her with Hum Tum costar Saif Ali Khan after 13 years probably keep her going. But above all, she is happy to be Babli all over again after the 2005 hit. “When Bunty Aur Babli was first developed, we wanted to take the franchise forward. Shaad [Ali, director] wasn’t convinced. Adi [Aditya Chopra, producer] kept the story for a long time, looking for a director who would make it his own. Finally, it was Varun [V Sharma, director] who whipped up a fantastic screenplay. It is not a regular comedy; it has its heart in the right place,” she begins. Mukerji believes that Khan and she have matured, just like their on-screen characters. “Saif was a little childish when I met him on the sets of Hum Tum [2004]. Today, he is mature and

sorted. We have rediscovered our chemistry with this film. This time, we brought our love and respect on screen. I admire him as an actor; his comic timing is impeccable. We fed off each other’s energies. Our common ground this time was that we were both parents. So, we exchanged notes.” Well, it appears our Hum Tum characters grew up. Probably the right time to ask if there will ever be a sequel to the romantic drama. “For now, no. But I hope there are more Bunty Babli sequels in the offing.” Letting go of their vanities, Khan piled on the kilos to play the average Fursatganj middle-aged man while Mukerji plays mother to a 10-year-old in the con caper.
