Environmental Leadership from Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum Prompts Canada-Wide Change

W

almart Canada pledges to eliminate single-use plastic shopping bags across the country based on City of Surrey’s Lead Surrey, BC – After October’s successful City Council vote introducing a new Plastic Bags and Single-Use Items Bylaw in the City of Surrey, the Mayor’s office has now received word that the initiative has inspired nationwide change in corporate Canada. A December 7, 2021 letter received from Bryan MacLeod, Senior Manager of Public Affairs for Walmart Canada, confirms that “[f]ollowing the leadership in your municipality,” the chain “will be eliminating single-use plastic shopping bags at all 400+ of our Canadian locations by Earth Day 2022.” The City of Surrey became the first municipality in Metro Vancouver to implement such a policy change, which is expected to eliminate use of over 25 million plastic checkout bags and seven million foam containers every year.

“We are proud to be the first city in the region to implement this ban and always hoped that our lead could set an example for our neighbouring municipalities,” explains McCallum. “However, Walmart Canada’s outreach is a strong endorsement of how civic leadership can truly prompt tangible impact on a far larger scale.”

The Walmart Canada decision is expected to be fully in place by Earth Day 2022 (April 22) and will remove almost 250,000,000 bags from circulation every year. This is the equivalent of the number of plastic bags it would take to circle The news from Walmart Canada the Earth’s equator 20 times. demonstrates that the actions of the Safe Surrey Coalition-led City Coun- Since taking office, the Safe Surrey cil are creating waves far beyond the Coalition has moved forward on a realm of public policy makers, says range of green initiatives, including doubling the number of EV fast Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. charging stations within city limits,

B.C. marks one year of COVID-19 vaccines The Province are marking one year since the first COVID-19 vaccines arrived and were administered in British Columbia. "While the global pandemic continues to challenge us in ways we had never imagined, I've been amazed at how British Columbians rolled up their sleeves to keep each other safe," said Premier John Horgan. "Since we began the largest immunization program in our province's history, the vast majority of people have stepped up and done their part. By remaining vigilant, continuing to follow public health orders and getting vaccinated, we will get through this together.” On Dec. 14, 2020, the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines arrived in Vancouver. Top health and wellness trends in 2022 (NC) The core elements of staying healthy, such as eating well and exercising often, may never change. However, scientists and health practitioners are always pushing boundaries on how best to do those things, and every year we hear of new life hacks to try out that may be the key to our health. Here are some top trends for 2022: Whole health While there’s no special ingredient or trick that can actually “boost” your immune system, that doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to keep yourself healthy and prevent illness. A key trend is a holistic approach to your health that recognizes the interconnection of eating nutritious food, being physically active and nourishing your mental health as core parts of staying well. Sleep hygiene

PAGE 8

Now that many of us have discovered the extra z’s you can get when you don’t commute to an office, we’re loath to lose them. So, this year expect everyone to be talking about the best things in sleep hygiene, from creating a bedtime routine and avoiding screens to tech and apps that help track the sleep you’re getting or improve its quality. Functional genetic testing Maybe you know someone who’s had their genetics tested to find out about their ancestry. With functional genetic testing, you’ll be able to discover the health implications of your genes. This goes beyond markers for major diseases – tests from The DNA Company can indicate whether you’re likely to gain weight in the cold, if you’re hardwired for binge-watching and even if you’re well-suited to a vegan diet. It’s a new frontier in health and wellness sure to make a splash in 2022.

as one part of a larger strategy to reduce substance related harms in White Rock and South Surrey. This overdose prevention site is a place where our trained staff can form meaningful connections with people impacted by the increasingly toxic drug supply, and support pathways out of isolation,” says George Passmore, Director of Personal & Family Counselling and Support, Sources Community Services Society.

Overdose prevention sites have been instrumental in preventing death and harm associated with overdose, while increasing connections to health care resources and access to substance use services including treatment, decreasing injection-related litter and reducing Hepatitis C and HIV transmission. They are also associated with no increase in drug use or drug-related crime. Overdose prevention services also increase opportunities for people who use drugs to contribute to the well being of the community. The evidence suggests that the sites decrease the number of discarded sharps and reduce the number of individuals using substances in public.

Minister Bibeau and Minister Popham meet with impacted farmers in the Abbotsford area

LIFECARE HOMEOPATHY UNIT OF NATURAL HOMEOPATHIC SOLUTIONS INC.

The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, travelled to British Columbia to meet with B.C. farmers and hear how the recent extreme flooding and landslide events in the province have impacted farm operations, families and livelihoods. Minister Bibeau toured flood-affected areas of B.C.’s Fraser Valley with British Columbia’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Lana Popham. Ministers Bibeau and Popham visited affected farms, including dairy and poultry farms and a winery, where they saw firsthand the widespread impacts of the extreme flooding and landslides on the agriculture sector.

Minister Bibeau also spoke with local farmers. She heard how these events devastated many BC farms and she also heard stories of courage and resilience and how farm families worked together in the face of adversity. Governments continue to work together and engage with the sector, and Indigenous leaders to understand the full impact of the floods and landslides, in order to provide the necessary support to help recover and plan for the future. The governments of Canada and B.C. continue to stand with farmers and communities who are feeling the impacts of extreme weather conditions. Last week, the federal and provincial governments held an industry roundtable with B.C. agriculture representatives to discuss both immediate and long-term support for the agriculture and agri-food industry, including a recent provincial request to launch a joint assessment under the AgriRecovery Framework. Federal and provincial officials are working with the utmost urgency to complete the joint assessment and help producers with their extraordinary costs. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and the Premier of British Columbia, John Horgan, also recently announced a committee of federal and provincial ministers who will work together and with Indigenous leadership to guide immediate and ongoing support to British Columbia families, businesses, farmers and communities affected by the extreme weather events. Minister Bibeau also highlighted the work of Canadian Armed Forces personnel, who have been on the ground since mid-November to help farmers rescue livestock, resupply food to isolated communities, help repair critical infrastructure and assist with supply chain movement.

Fighting Racism in our Communities The recent increase in number of incidents of hate, racism, and violence especially against people of Asian heritage is very disturbing. During the past year such incidents have increased exponentially. This is a result of ignorance, prejudice and fear. Such criminal acts must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Here in Canada, racism was already on the rise before the pandemic. However, since the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic the situation in this regard has gotten worse. People who engage in such despicable behaviour must be brought to justice. There is no place for such individuals in this country. As Canadians, we need to stand solidly with the victims of hate and racism.

Feel unsafe driving in a snowstorm? How to build confidence (NC) As Canadian drivers, we still need to get to our destinations whether the forecast calls for clear skies or a major storm. But if you feel unsure driving in heavy snow, you’re not alone. According to a recent survey, one in five Canadians feel unsafe driving on winter roads, and 42 per cent are particularly concerned about black ice.

If you drive on black ice, your vehicle will not respond as well to driver inputs, similar to if you were driving Fortunately, there are ways to stay in on regular ice. In any icy road scenario, avoid overcorrecting with the steering wheel or panic braking. Ensure you have the right tires. Before braving any winter driving, you should feel confidence in your tires. If you are dealing with the possibility of blizzard conditions, studded tires can provide you with superior grip and braking capabilities for improved vehicle control on icy roads.

While we cannot eliminate the extremes of Canada’s winters, we can at least prepare ourselves. If conditions are too dangerous, consider staying home and off the roads altogether.

Conservative MPs’ Advocacy Results in Billions for Federal Disaster Recovery Support Ed Fast, Member of Parliament for Abbotsford, Brad Vis, Member of Parliament for Mission—Matsqui—Fraser Canyon, Mark Strahl, Member of Parliament for Chilliwack—Hope, and Dan Albas, Member of Parliament for Central Okanagan—Similkameen—Nicola, issued the following statement in response to the federal government’s Economic and Fiscal Update:

that due to the scale of the damage, their tax base is unable to support their share under the DFAA. The federal government must give them the certainty they need, in writing, rather than vague assurances of future support.

“We are pleased that our Conservative team’s efforts to secure federal support for flood recovery efforts is paying off. Our Team Canada approach to working with the federal government has ensured that British Columbians will receive some of the resources they need to help them through this very difficult time.

“Our request for the government to provide direct funding to rebuild Lytton, B.C. after its devastation by last summer’s forest fires has not been met. Similarly, our demand for the Trudeau government to take seriously the future threat of more regular flooding events and to set aside sufficient funding to properly rebuild, upgrade and expand our diking and drainage infrastructure in the Fraser Valley and other parts of southern British Columbia was completely overlooked.

“Yesterday’s Economic and Fiscal Update provided $5 billion for the federal government’s share of recovery costs under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA) as well as for other costs related to recent natural disasters in B.C. That said, small communities, specifically Princeton and Merritt, have expressed their frustration

“Canada’s Conservatives will continue to take a Team Canada approach to help the people of British Columbia rebuild. We commit to renewed advocacy and increased political pressure to ensure that the promised funds reach those who need it and are expeditiously invested in the critical infrastructure BC requires.”

PAGE 22

“Sadly, our call for the Trudeau Liberals to match donations made to qualified charitable groups beyond the Canadian Red Cross went unheeded. We will continue to advocate for matching federal support for the many worthy organizations that have raised money and done the good work on the ground in our flood ravaged regions.

Most spend 20 to 25 years paying off their mortgage and creating plans to efficiently clear debt, but life is full of unknowns. What happens if you were to suddenly die or become critically ill?

Highway 11, between Hazelwood Avenue and Clayburn Road, is open to commercial vehicle traffic, supporting the movement of goods and services between the Sumas border, Abbotsford and Mission. This stretch of highway was reopened to passenger and emergency vehicles on Dec. 6. Traffic is moving on the two southbound lanes of Highway 11 using a single lane in each direction. “Injured workers deserve better”: DREAM BIG IMMIGRATION BCFED launches campaign to fix Workers’ Compensation Board 604-217-8611 RAVINDER SEKHON (Unceded Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam territories — Vancouver, BC) A major new campaign by BC’s labour movement aims to ensure urgently-needed changes at the province’s Workers’ Compensation Board. “It’s been more than two years since the BC government received Janet Patterson’s report detailing major problems throughout workers’ compensation,” BCFED President Laird Cronk said. “It exposed a system that too often acts like a for-profit insurance company, instead of an ally in an injured worker’s recovery.”

paying interest to workers when the WCB wrongly denies them benefits, resulting in a lengthy delay ensuring the WCB makes the changes set out in the Patterson report to create a worker-centered approach. Patterson’s report, drawing on input from more than 1,000 workers and their families, found that the WCB uses a cookie-cutter approach to injured workers, often ignoring medical advice and rushing them back to work before they’re ready. “The report also confirmed what we’ve been hearing for years: that

The campaign website, at www. WorkersDeserveBetter.ca, will highlight injured workers’ stories of unjust, hurtful and even dangerous treatment by the WCB — stories Cronk said are all too common. And it will provide a way for supporters to call on the provincial government to take immediate action, including: creating a Fair Practices Commission independent of the WCB to deal with complaints and implement solutions removing binding policy provisions so decisions can be made on the merits of each case ensuring an equal balance of worker and employer representatives on the WCB Board of Directors

the WCB treats many injured workers as adversaries, with a troubling lack of personal or cultural respect,” said Secretary-Treasurer Sussanne Skidmore. Skidmore said unions are encouraged by recent signals from the government that changes are coming, including a December 8 statement by Labour Minister Harry Bains. “We’re looking forward to hearing more. But we want to be sure those changes reflect the fact that the BC Liberals slashed workers’ compensation in 2002. Labour shortages are back with a vengeance, putting small business recovery at risk

ore than half of small businesses (55 per cent) cannot get all the staff they need for current operations or to meet new demand, while another 16 per cent were able to face the challenge, but at a significant additional cost, according to a new report by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) entitled Labour shortages are back with a vengeance. Despite a majority of affected businesses raising wages, the issue persists, leading many to try a number of alternatives, with temporary foreign workers (TFWs) and automation being among the most successful. “Businesses across BC have been finding it very challenging to get the help and staff they need ” said Seth Scott, Senior Policy Analyst, BC at CFIB. “Labour shortages are especially acute in BC, over half (59 per cent) of BC small businesses report experiencing labour shortages, the fourth highest in Canada.” “Small businesses have a long and steep climb to recovery, and having the right workers in place or other tools to address labour shortages is a big part of that,” concluded Corinne Pohlmann, Senior Vice-President of National Affairs at CFIB. “They are already doing all they can to attract workers, but they need governments to do their part by adopting policies that increase productivity, connect job seekers with employers and don’t put the cost of hiring out of reach.”

Implementing training programs for specific groups such as young people who were not in education, employment or training (NEETs), racialized minorities or people with disabilities. Ensuring that Employment Insurance (EI) programs do not discourage individuals from returning to work. Reducing EI premiums for small businesses to offset the costs of hiring and training staff. Encouraging Work Integrated Learning (WIL) programs in universities and colleges (such as coop programs and internships) by including and catering to small business needs. Adding tax credits for worker training, particularly for informal, on-thejob training and tax credits for hiring young graduates and students. “Small businesses were already experiencing a very significant shortage of labour at the beginning of 2020, and the pandemic has made the situation only more complex,” said CFIB vice-president of national research Simon Gaudreault. “Industries that were locked down for long periods of time, like hospitality, have seen a mass exodus as workers upskilled or switched to other jobs, and virtually all sectors are facing major demographic upheavals with not enough new workers coming in to replace those who are retiring.”

If there is anything you feel unclear about when it comes to somebody else, you should set out to discuss it. This could clear up presumptions or uncertainties on both sides. An opportunity can present itself which will allow you to make future plans that can be pleasure orientated or that will satisfy your priorities more so.

Your interest will be moving forward in a manner that will open you up to greater freedom and enjoyment in the long term. Other people involved might be expecting more than you can realistically manage. There will be challenges but as long as you focus on the details or work that needs to be done you will eventually get there.

You could realise the amount of work involved in something you thought was important, isn’t worth it. You may need to change your priorities based on the expectations of somebody else. Before you do, you should consider the amount of control or the limitations that come with this. Your independence can’t be put aside

Work hard on finalising things that need to be put into place so that you will be free to enjoy yourself more. It will not hurt to question any pressure somebody else is placing on you to perhaps get things done more quickly. It might simply mean pointing out the amount of work involved if matters are to be dealt with properly.

Anything that has been important to you on a personal level during the last two years can now reach a stage where you feel you are in a better position to do things your way. You might get some opposition from somebody who thinks they know better but there will be ways of either getting support or working around them.

Follow what you believe is the most balanced approach when it comes to putting things in place or dealing with family matters. Don’t be influenced by somebody attempting to make you feel guilty or perhaps sorry for them. You need to act on what you consider you can handle because it will work best and be the most efficient.

It may be necessary to make a final decision to end something that has proved inefficient or a big time wasting exercise, otherwise it can hold you back over the next 2 years. You need to weigh up opportunities that you know you can enjoy against accepting limitations that can result in restricting potential future growth.

Being prepared to be serious, as well as putting in the effort required to get a good foundation in place that you can continue to develop long term has every potential to reap successful rewards. It might take a while to be as financially satisfying as you would like but if you are determined to persist, your rewards will materialise.

In any situation where discussion will take place be cautious as to the underlying agenda of those involved. This is not a time for you to be forthright with your ideas to get things going. You need to see what is put forward. That way it will become obvious as to where there is support, as well as the opportunity to have your say.

Catching up with friends or acquaintances and be most relaxing and enjoyable as long as you ensure your responsibilities don’t suffer. There is no reason to spend more money than you feel comfortable about. Stand your ground in any situations where somebody else expects you to accept the way they want to do things.

Finances could encourage you to reconsider something that was an important priority, especially if it involved travel or that it was for reasons of getting away from it all. You could enjoy the feeling of having money behind you for when the unexpected arises. Being able to let your mind wander can be a relaxing practice.

There is little point in attempting to avoid responsibilities, especially with people who have authority in some way. You will benefit more from being prepared to negotiate in such a manner that you give assurances you will see things through. From your standpoint, you need visualise yourself taking these future directions.

B.C.’s vaccination effort boosted by community pharmacies

.C. pharmacies are playing a pivotal role in providing more options for people seeking booster shots to protect against COVID-19. More than 350 pharmacies in 80 communities throughout the province are now administering vaccines, with another approximately 700 pharmacies expected to join by mid-January 2022.

“Pharmacies have been delivering COVID-19 vaccines since April 2021,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer. “We welcome them playing an even bigger role now in delivering vaccines as part of the Province’s ongoing immunization campaign against COVID-19.”

Those 12 and older seeking to join the more than 88% of people in the province who have received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine can receive their first or second dose of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines through a pharmacy. Booster shots are approved for those 18 years of age and older, and British Columbians will receive an invitation when By early 2022, pharmacies will de- it is their time to book a booster apliver the majority of booster shots pointment, approximately six to eight for everyone eligible through the Get months after the second dose. Vaccinated registration and booking system. “We’re expanding the breadth of our effort and making it more convenient than ever for British Columbians to book a COVID-19 vaccine with their local participating pharmacies,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “Thanks to more pharmacies joining the effort, people can book an appointment for a time that works best for them at a location close to home.”

“Pharmacies are located across British Columbia in communities both large and small. Pharmacists’ knowledge, training and ability to provide vaccinations means we can help provide British Columbians with that extra protection against COVID-19,” said Geraldine Vance, CEO, BC Pharmacy Association.

“This partnership with pharmacies enhances the provincewide effort to provide community-based and convenient places to get your booster shot,” said Dr. Penny Ballem, executive lead of B.C.’s COVID-19 Immunization Program.

Cleverest script I’ve read in a long time : Saif When

Certain stories deserve a wider audience. Saif Ali Khan believes the 2017 Tamil film, Vikram Vedha, is one of them. The actor is currently in Lucknow, neck-

deep in the shoot of its Hindi adaptation. After Hrithik Roshan — who slips into the role of the gangster, essayed by Vijay Sethupathi in the original — completed the first schedule of the thriller in the UAE last month, it was time for Khan to step into R Madhavan’s shoes as an honest cop. Over the past few weeks, director duo Pushkar-Gayathri have shot portions near Gomti Nagar and old Lucknow with him. “It’s an excellent script. Vikram Vedha is a movie that makes you think,” begins Khan. The noir thriller revolves around righteous police inspector Vikram, who prides

I’m back to training hard after my injury : Alankrita Sahai Beauty pageant titleholder Alankrita Sahai, who was crowned Miss India Earth in 2014, loves staying fit through regular exercise. She suffered an injury on shoot recently and could not do so for a while, but she’s got back to her schedule, now. Looking back at what happened, she informs, “I got injured during my film schedule while doing an action film sequence in Goa. It was a third-degree ankle tear. I’m okay now and I’m back to training hard after recovering from my injury.” There’s no fixed regimen for her as she loves a holistic

approach to fitness and optimises her time to suit her workouts. The Bollywood actress, who was seen in the Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra starrer ‘Namaste England’, talks about the regime she follows. She says, “I do weight training, boxing and a lot of functional training mixed with yoga and pilates and that is what I’ve finally realised works for me - a combination of everything! I’ve have tried a lot of routines and regimes and nothing has given me the results like the combination of all the workouts that I do on alternate days.”

Samar Vermani explains why he enjoys doing challenging roles

Actor Samar Vermani, who was last seen in the web series ‘Girgit’, says has never been medium centric. “As an actor I have never been medium centric. More especially, as a

himself on his morals. When he is asked to lead an encounter unit to kill Vedha and subsequently crosses paths with him, the gangster narrates three stories that change the cop’s perspective of right and wrong. Khan says the credit rests with the writer-director duo who have gone beyond a cop actioner to delve into a deeper conflict. “On one level, it’s an action movie, a thriller and a mystery, but it has also got a philosophical [element] that makes you think. The story is deeply satisfying on many levels. While it You would think that as is a challenging film, it is also the the creator, Ram Madhvani cleverest script I have read in a long knows the world of Aarya inside time.” out. But he also knows the value of prep. Which is why the entire team, even though they were all familiar with their respective characters, underwent a rigorous workshop before stepping into the crime drama’s second season. “I think every season needs some workshops. It was important for all of us to come back into the world. [Through the] workshop, we get into the characters and their back-story,” begins Madhvani. By his own admission, the latest instalment is darker than the opening season, with Sushmita

theatre actor I have always been in search of interesting characters and good stories because I strongly believe the real hero of any show or film is the script. So, be it films, web shows or television, I’m open to all mediums. I’m not platform agnostic,” he adds Samar Vermani, who also featured in the film ‘Lashtam Pashtam’, says he enjoys challenges. “As an actor it’s my job to add value, no matter how small or big the role is. That’s only been my focus till now and will remain the same in future. It’s always good to be the lead protagonist of any project. Because it increases the responsibility on an actor’s shoulders and it becomes a challenging task to perform exceptionally well for the project. And yes, as an artist I love those challenges.”

Sen’s eponymous character stopping at nothing to protect her family. Madhvani’s biggest struggle while writing the script was to ensure that the audience would empathise with Aarya despite her misdeeds. “She will show her claws again. She will be in a moral conflict about whether her family is her strength or weakness. What are the compromises she will make to become somebody she doesn’t want to be? A lot depends on why she did what she did. [I hope people] will be able to identify with that and are on her side. [I hope they] sympathise with the choices she makes. They will understand her moral compass.”

Aanand sir had confidence in me when I did not : Sara Ali Khan Sara Ali Khan doesn’t want to drink too many black coffees the morning we catch up with her for an interview. Having inherited her father Saif Ali Khan’s candid nature, she is worried she will tell us too much about Atrangi Re. She argues that the Aanand L Rai film has a complex plot that’s best revealed when it drops online. For now, all she is willing to say is that the Akshay Kumar and Dhanush-starrer is a film of a lifetime to her. “I have the Thalaiva of the north and the Thalaiva of the south on screen with me. Aanand sir found vulnerability and innocence in me, which I hide beneath my confidence. He helped me bring those out on screen. So, in some ways, my character is like me. I am softer on the inside than I show. I have grown up with a single mother, and learnt from her that I need a hard exterior to protect what’s inside,” she says. Rai’s stories usually have fierce women driving the narrative. Khan believes the beauty of his heroines lies in their love and compassion. “He loved me so much on that set. I started this film a week after Love Aaj Kal [2020] released. That film didn’t do well. Being with Aanand sir helped me rebuild myself. He had confidence in me when I did not. He made me perform when my selfesteem was at its lowest.”
