Upcoming changes to the Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) The Board of the ACF wish to announce that, after almost 6 years at the helm, Wendy Neufeld will be retiring as Executive Director (ED) in early 2023. Wendy has provided exceptional leadership to the ACF during her tenure which has resulted in the ACF becoming a markedly stronger and more relevant organization here in Abbotsford When Wendy first joined the ACF, the Foundation’s invested assets stood at just over $10 million. Today, thanks to generous donors and Wendy’s stewardship those assets have grown to $18+ million. This endowment growth has dramatically enhanced the ACF’s ability to financially support worthy causes and projects in Abbotsford. Last year, the Foundation distributed over $1.4 million through student scholarships and funding to local charities. In addition, the Abbotsford Disaster Relief Fund (ADRF) will provide more than $4 million in flood relief to individuals, farms and businesses affected by the Nov. 2021 flooding disaster. It is anticipated that grants will exceed $1.1 million in this current year.

2018 which has elevated the ACF’s online presence and improved communication with both donors and the community at large. She has created a six-year succession plan for the Board which has positioned the ACF to have competent and engaged leadership well into the future.

The ACF has benefitted greatly from Wendy’s incredible work ethic and her ability to positively engage with individuals and organizations that want to help make Abbotsford better. The Board extends its sincere appreDonations have grown steadily over ciation to her for that. Wendy plans to the past 5 years. Cultural learning can give students grad credit Students in B.C. will now have new possibilities to earn credits for First Nations language and culture programs through the expansion of the External Credentials Program (ECP). As of Friday, July 1, 2022, First Nations are able to create and approve their language and cultural learning programs to be recognized by the Ministry of Education and Child Care as external credentials that students can use toward graduating. “The ministry is pleased to work in partnership with the First Nations Education Steering Committee to enable students to receive credit toward graduation for First Nations language and culture teaching that takes place outside of their regular school program,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Education and Child Care. “This new external credential option recognizes the valuable learning opportunities that First Nations provide to youth in their communities.” To be eligible for external credentials, programs must have a level of depth and rigour that is comparable to Grade 10, 11 and 12 courses and ensure that a subject-matter expert will assess performance to determine students’ achievement and successful completion of the program.

ing partnership with the Ministry of Education and Child Care to make the B.C. education system more relevant and responsive to our students and our communities.” Some external credentials may count for credit toward required courses for the B.C. Dogwood Diploma (e.g., arts education or applied design, skills, and technologies), while others may count as credit toward elective courses for graduation. United Truckers Association votes unanimously in favour of labour action 639 members offering a one-month reprieve for negotiations with the Port of Vancouver and Government of Canada

No Credit, Bad Credit, No Problem!

A Canada Day vote by members of the United Truckers Association (“UTA”) over the long weekend produced an emphatic 639-0 result in support of a shutdown at the Port of Vancouver. Faced with crippling costs associated with the incoming Rolling Truck Age Program (“RTAP”) and an ongoing unwillingness for good faith discussions by the Port’s leadership, the UTA is now preparing to commence labour disruption that will create shockwaves across Canada’s already fragile supply chain.

Over the coming weeks, the UTA will publicly outline the contradictions and politics behind the Port of Vancouver’s alleged efforts to tackle carbon emissions. Settlement reached with Purdue Pharma (Canada) for opioid damages Opioid manufacturer Purdue Pharma (Canada) (Purdue Canada) has agreed to a first of its kind settlement in Canada resulting from B.C.-led efforts to recover health-care costs related to the sale and marketing of opioid-based pain medicines. The settlement was reached in the context of a proposed class-action lawsuit brought by British Columbia on behalf of all Canadian governments. “B.C.’s efforts to negotiate this unique settlement, together with other Canadian governments paves the way for additional settlements to be reached in the ongoing litigation against other manufacturers and distributors of opioid products,” said David Eby, Attorney General. “We know that no amount of money can bring back those who have died, but we are committed to holding corporations and others accountable for acts of alleged wrongdoing committed in the manufacturing and distribution of opioid products.”

Province updates regulations, services for British Columbians

Tips for a fun summer celebration

As government works to make life better for people and communities, and to create a clean and inclusive economy, the Province is releasing the Better Regulations for British Columbians annual report. The report highlights the key actions taken by government to improve services for people and businesses during a challenging year that included the ongoing pandemic, wildfires and extreme flooding. “Updating regulations and enhancing services every year is an important part of making everyday life better for British Columbians,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “This year’s Better Regulations for British Columbians annual report adheres to our StrongerBC Economic Plan’s goal of clean and inclusive growth as we tackle the challenges of today while building an economy that works for everyone.” The 2021-22 Better Regulations annual report adheres to the Province’s

Designer advice to celebrate vintage décor at home (NC) Vintage furniture and décor are having a moment. The authentic, grounded appeal of vintage items suit a range of popular design aesthetics, and it’s also a sustainable choice.

Consider styling with “Shelfies”

For wooden pieces, Grech suggests walls painted in cooler hues such as Yarmouth Blue HC-150 or even Bold Blue 2064-10 to bring out the beauty in naturally warm wood and let the nuances and patina of vintage furniture shine.”

Breathe new life into vintage pieces that don’t fit your current décor by repainting them with Advance interior paint. For a weathered or aged look, consider a whitewash effect on clean, sanded wood furniture. This can be done with a white wood stain or by thinning down paint with glaze or water, using both a brush and rags to apply and then remove excess to achieve the desired effect. Don’t forget to protect the surface after with an acrylic urethane such as Stays Clear

If you do not own vintage furniture but love a vintage vibe, consider a couple of accent pieces to help create styled vignettes or “Shelfies”. Style Benjamin Moore colour and design expert Sharon Grech shares three tips tips include using a bust as a bookto help you bring out the beauty of end, or a collection of glass bottles on top of a stack of books to style a vintage pieces in your home. coffee table. Paint a complementary backdrop for vintage furniture Don’t replace, repaint

If you have vintage furniture in a modern esthetic, Grech says “consider a deep hue like Mink 2112-10 or a bold red like Flamenco CSP1195 that will make a statement and complement the strong lines of modern furniture.”

(NC) Owning a home can feel like an important milestone, providing a sense of control and stability over your future. It can also be a point of pride and an investment in your equity. And yet, sky-high housing prices across the country often make it feel impossible to afford a home. In fact, the amount Canadians expect to pay for a house has increased by $100 000 over the past year according to a recent survey by BMO. With buyers across the country expecting to pay an average of $588 000 for their property, it’s natural for would-be buyers to question their options. Here are some tips to help you figure out if you can afford to buy. Consider wants and needs Take time to think about the kind of home you want and what you are willing to compromise on. Asking yourself questions can help you figure out what’s affordable for you. For example, are you willing to pay more for a prime location, or will you be just fine buying further afield? Do you plan on living in a new home for decades or only a few years? Be realistic with yourself and understand you may have to make some changes to this list or make sacrifices down the line. But at least you’ll know where you draw the line when it comes to affordability. Calculate budget

could look like. Remember that you will have to pass a stress test to qualify for a mortgage so double check what you can afford based on that qualifying number, not on what you make. There are plenty of online calculators that make it easy to figure this out. And when you know what you’re working with, consider getting pre-approved for a mortgage. That way you’ll officially know your budget, you’ll be ready to act fast when the time comes, and you’ll have time for due diligence. Ask any questions There are many factors that influence what you can afford to pay for a home, from your credit score to the type of mortgage you choose and the size of your down payment. Everyone’s situation is unique, so it can help to discuss your options with a mortgage broker or specialist. Do your research ahead of time and be prepared with questions about your options.

Take stock of your financial position Find more information at bmo.com/ and research what your mortgage mortgage. PAGE 26

3 tips to deal with never-ending stress (NC) Most of us have been living with lots of change and uncertainty for long enough. In fact, according to a recent survey, the number of Canadians who rated their mental health as excellent or good in 2021 notably declined compared to 2019.

“It has no doubt been a challenging and unpredictable time for so many who are working, and we’re seeing this manifest with a significant impact on aYrik PLrMm ‘ipafr’ dy sMklp dI ivafi- their mental health,” says Jean Salvadore, senior director of life and living Kaf ies pRkfr krdf hY: benefits at RBC Insurance, which comaMgryjLI ivwcoN AulQf: “jy ‘ipafr’ dy missioned the survey. sMklp dI gwl kIqI jfvy, qF jy Cy sfl df "While we may not be able to control bwcf afpxI mF nUM kihMdf hY, ‘mF! mYN qYnUM our current circumstances, there are ipafr krdf hF’ aqy dUjy pfsy iek vIh measures we can all take to cope with sfl df nOjvfn afpxI hI hm-Aumr kuVI challenges and remain prepared for nUM kihMdf hY, ‘mYN qYnUM ipafr krdf hF’ qF uncertainty,” Salvadore adds. bfvjUd ies dy ik dohF vfkF ivwc anuBv Here are three steps that can help: kIqy gey ipafr dy aihsfs ivwc Zyr aMqr 1. clear boundaries between work and personal time. Take frequent minibreaks to exercise or meditate and foster social connection with others. 2. Review and revise your spending With inflation on the rise, most of us would benefit from revisiting financial priorities. Reviewing your wants and needs and where you can cut back can help keep financial stress at bay. For example, you can unsubscribe from sales emails to help prevent impulse purchases, and cut back on services you don’t really need or use. Knowing you’re getting your finances in check can lift a major weight off your mind. 3. Double check your coverage

Being proactive about solutions helps lower anxiety and provides a greater sense of safety. Disability insurance can help you maintain your income if you become unable to work, and many plans can also help you return to work through benefits such as rehabilitation sessions, job retraining and other serhealth and overall well-being. Establish vices to help you.

You are in a good position to begin putting information or ideas you have been looking at into some sort of structure that can be built upon as time goes on. Don’t attempt to do too much at once though. Look closely at cost alternatives. This could uncover surprising options that can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Mars moves into your sign this week where it will remain until the 20th August. This generates the beginning of a new 2 year personal cycle. It should also lift your energy level. Any anxiety of late can be left behind as greater clarity begins to develop. New information could come your way that could be most helpful.

Focus will change from yourself to your finances up to 19th July. It would be unwise to jump into any financial commitments now, no matter how optimistic you feel. There can be unexpected matters arise up to late August that could prove quite frustrating because of being out of your control. Caution now will be effective later.

A sense of finally being able to move ahead with your decision-making will begin to take place now that Mercury has moved into your sign where it will remain until 19th July. It brings to an end a sense of not really knowing that has been off and on since May. Focus on important priorities and obligations you believe to be fair.

Clarity when it comes to ending certain commitments can arise quickly. Not that you need to act on them instantly – it might we wise to contemplate that over the next 2 weeks. This might very well open up other future opportunities that will be more interesting. You need to be practical about obligations you can handle.

You can start to put a lot more thought into your priorities up to 19th July. There could also be increased contact with friends or involvement with a group of people where ideas are shared. Somebody who has been difficult or secretive of late could be more willing to discuss things, which might even involve some future plans.

Your determination to act will strengthen when it comes to any situation that doesn’t look too pleasing as to where it is heading in the future. You need to think about yourself. This might mean starting to take an honest look at the expectations of somebody else, particularly up to late August. Your opportunities are important.

Hopefully you have been diligently working away since late May so that you will now have the freedom to enjoy increased activity with others to late August. There could be some interesting hook ups that will alter your thinking on where best to head in the future. There will still be work to do, so don’t be tempted to get lazy here.

Being in a position to switch off mentally for the next 2 weeks will do wonders, so avoid taking on any work you don’t need to. You will gain greatest pleasure from catching up with jobs you have been too busy to get to lately. Also paying better attention to your general well being that might include getting back to exercise.

There will be a lot more communication with others up to 19th July. This could include family. It would also be a good time to get in touch with anybody who has been on your mind. Your social life can become busier to late August, which might also include doing something very out of the ordinary. Things will be on the move.

result in much pleasure and enjoyment. This could also be a good time to perhaps have a holiday or plan one for later. Only do what you can afford – it is the break that is most important, not the grandness.
