Landlords Invited to Info Session on Renting to Newcomers
Event takes place on Tuesday, April 25 at 7pm
The Fraser Valley Refugee Readiness Team (FVRRT) is hosting a community information session on Tuesday, April 25th for anyone who wants to learn more about renting to refugees and displaced Ukrainians.
Speakers will share the benefits and logistics of renting to newcomers and a refugee will share their experience in finding housing in Abbotsford. A panel representing a variety of non-profit organizations and the City of Abbotsford will be able to answer questions from attendees.
“This session will help raise awareness of the need for rental properties and also reassure landlords that newcomers make excellent tenants. Refugees have gone through rigorous background checks before being allowed to come to Canada,” said Kim Reddicopp, an Archway Refugee Integration Liaison.
“Securing affordable and accessible housing is one of the biggest challenges for newcomers,” said Reddicopp. “While all tenants are facing a shortage of rental properties and increasing prices, newcomers face additional barriers that exacerbate the issue.”
Some of these challenges are a lack of prior rental references and credit history in Canada, which can stop newcomers from being considered by some landlords.
“These barriers are out of the newcomer’s control, so we try to work with landlords to consider other factors and make exceptions,” said Touseef Amir, an Archway Housing Coordinator.
“Housing is a crucial step in the integration process. Once they are settled into long-term housing, they can enroll their children in a nearby school and find stable employment,” said Reddicopp.
Government assisted refugees receive some funding towards housing
for up to a year and may receive other benefits like the child tax credit. Privately sponsored refugees receive up to a year of guaranteed support from their sponsor.
“Despite all the challenges facing them, refugees are remarkably resilient and find ways to contribute to their community,” said Donna Lo, Archway Manager of Pathways to Integration.
The Fraser Valley Refugee Readiness Team is a collective of local organizations that assist refugees and displaced Ukrainians. They work together to enhance and coordinate community support at a regional level ensuring that communities are ready to welcome, respond to the needs of, and leverage the strengths and contribution of newcomers. The group concentrates on the areas of housing, healthcare, employment and coordination of information.
While not creating new services, FVRRT members in Abbotsford help support local service providers and coordinate information as newcomers search for housing, employment and other supports. There are 14 FVRRT partners including Archway Community Services, the Abbotsford Local Immigration Partnership, Abbotsford School District, Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce and the Inasmuch Community Society.
The free event will be held April 25th from 7:00 pm -8:30 pm at Archway Community Services (2420 Montrose Avenue).
To register for the community info session, please visit Archway.ca/ Landlord or email FVRRT@archway.ca.

Minimum wage increases to $16.75 per hour on June 1
On June 1, 2023, B.C.’s lowest-paid workers will get a pay raise with the general minimum wage increasing from $15.65 to $16.75 an hour.
“Having a minimum wage that keeps up with inflation is a key step to prevent the lowest paid workers from falling behind,” said Harry Bains, Minister of Labour. “These workers and their families feel the impacts of high costs much more than anyone else. We are maintaining our policy of tying the minimum wage to inflation.”
The 6.9% increase in minimum wage rates reflects B.C.’s average annual inflation rate in 2022. The adjustment reflects government’s commitment to tie annual minimum wage increases to inflation. The same increase will apply to wages for residential caretakers, live-in home-support workers and camp leaders. On Jan. 1, 2024, piece rates for 15 hand-harvested crops will also increase by 6.9%.
“Elevating the minimum wage is a necessary response to inflation. The
inflation we are experiencing now in B.C. is driven by profits, not wages,” said Jim Stanford, director, Centre for Future Work. “It is unfair to expect the most vulnerable workers to give up some of their non-discretionary income because of record high inflation. By ensuring fairer compensation for our lowest-paid workers, we will reduce inequality and foster a more inclusive society.”
The increase will positively affect approximately 150,000 workers who earn less than $16.75. Many are food service staff, grocery store workers, retail workers and others who were essential workers during the pandemic. Government has made regular, gradual increases to the minimum wage to provide certainty for workers and predictability for businesses. Overall, B.C.’s minimum wage has increased from one of the lowest in the country to one of the highest. The minimum wage was $10.45 per hour in 2015.

B.C. increases student financial aid, eases repayment
Post-secondary students will soon have access to increased financial aid, with more flexible repayment terms to make education and skills training more accessible and affordable in the face of global inflation.
“Access to finances shouldn’t be a barrier to preparing for an in-demand career in B.C. This is an immediateterm action to make education more accessible, as we continue the work on our medium-term plans to review the post-secondary funding model and expand the BC Access Grant,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of PostSecondary Education and Future Skills. “Making education more accessible and affordable is a major focus for our government and an important part of our Future Ready plan.”
Starting August 2023, this will be the first increase to weekly student loan maximums since 2006. After making student loans interest-free in 2019, the B.C. government is increasing financial assistance available to students from $110 to $220 per week for single students and from $140 to $280 per week for students with dependants.
post-secondary education and skills training, so people can get good jobs and build good lives in British Columbia.
Effective August 2023, government will change student loan repayment terms to align with the federal government’s Repayment Assistance Program, increasing the income level from $25,000 to $40,000 under which a student does not have to repay their loan, with the amount indexed to inflation. The maximum monthly repayment amount will be lowered from 20% to 10% of household income.
“Receiving financial aid from the B.C. student loan program has allowed me to pursue my dream of becoming a registered nurse,” said Lois Gill, a third-year student in the bachelor of science in nursing program at Vancouver Community College. “While completing my studies, I feel secure in my finances so I can meet my basic needs and study at the same time, while planning for my future academic goals, such as becoming a nurse practitioner.”
Increasing weekly student loan max-
Students applying for student financial assistance will automatically be considered for the BC Access Grant, which provides as much as $4,000 per year to students with middle and low incomes at B.C.’s public post-secondary institutions. The grant was launched in 2020, the first new grant program in 15 years.
The new increases to financial aid will help students pursue an education path of their choice and build a career. This is part of StrongerBC’s Future Ready plan, which is working to remove barriers and open more opportunities for
imums will be funded through a $151-million investment over three years in Budget 2023.
Investments in student financial aid support the StrongerBC Future Ready plan to make post-secondary education and skills training more accessible. Budget 2023 invests $480 million over three years to support Future Ready’s work to break down barriers to post-secondary training so more people can get the training they need for in-demand careers and employers can access the talent they need.

B.C. expands EV charging, leads country in going electric
As British Columbians are embracing zero-emission vehicles faster than any other jurisdiction in Canada, the Province is helping them go electric with $26 million in new funding for public charging stations.
“British Columbians are switching to clean energy and cleaner transportation in record numbers as part of our CleanBC plan and leading Canada in the transition to zero emission vehicles,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “The new funding we are announcing today to expand B.C.’s
The 2022 ZEV Update report highlights CleanBC Go Electric rebates and programs that have helped drive growth in the number of electric vehicles in B.C. The number of registered light-duty EVs rose from 5,000 in 2016 to more than 100,000 today – a 1,900% increase in the past six years. Last year, 30,004 zeroemission vehicles were bought in B.C., beating the previous record of 24,263 in 2021.
In addition, the report outlines progress in the installation of public charging stations across British

public charging network will help get more EVs on the road, reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, and lower fuel costs for people.”
The Province’s newly released annual report about zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) shows they represented 18.1% of new light-duty passenger vehicles sold in 2022 – the highest percentage for any province or territory. To support British Columbians’ transition to electric vehicles and to help industry lower its emissions, year-end funding of $26 million will go toward the CleanBC Public Charging Program for light-duty vehicle charging.
The new funding will support approximately 250 more public lightduty fast-charging stations, including stations to complete the Electric Highway, a CleanBC Roadmap to 2030 commitment that will make recharging easier in every corner of the province.
Columbia, which now has one of the largest public charging networks in Canada, with more than 3,800 charging stations at the end of 2022. That compares to just 781 charging stations in 2016.
The CleanBC Roadmap to 2030, released in 2021, details a range of expanded actions to accelerate the switch to cleaner transportation, including strengthening the ZeroEmission Vehicles Act to require 26% of light-duty vehicle sales to be ZEV by 2026, 90% by 2030 and 100% by 2035 — five years ahead of the original target, and implementing the Clean Transportation Action Plan.
CleanBC is a pathway to a more prosperous, balanced and sustainable future. It supports government’s commitment to climate action to meet B.C.͛s emission targets and build a cleaner, stronger economy for everyone.

The Patrika Auto Review: 2023 Polestar P2 EV – Premium Brand EV- Performance is Standard!
Review by Veeno Dewan.
Polestar is an unfamiliar name to Canadians and is a standalone sub-brand of the Swedish Volvo and Chinese Geely auto out of China – who actually own Volvo. It is a premium brand
model, and the long-range dual motor model as evaluated. The single motor model features a 228 hp unit powering the front wheels with a driving range of 434 km of range. The dual-
competing with the likes of Tesla and Audi, with a focus on quality, performance, and cabin design.
We were lucky to gain a test drive in the new Polestar P2 Crossover, an arresting All- Electric fastback-style five door hatchback with hints of Volvo in the design language. There are the distinctive Volvoesque Thor’s hammer-style LED daytime running lights and a high Volvo style tailgate. It looks fun and interesting.
For 2023, the Polestar P2 EV has slightly improved range for dualmotor models along with an upgraded heat pump for even better wintry weather performance. There is also more interior and exterior design options such as fresh paint colors, wheel designs, ventilated Nappa leather upholstery, Light Ash wood trim, removable sunshade for the panoramic glass roof, Advanced cabin filter and upgraded interior particulate matter sensor and new in-car apps.
There are two versions of the Polestar pP: the long-range single motor
motor model features a combined 408 horsepower and all-wheel drive with very fast acceleration.
Both models feature a 78-kWh battery that allows 155 kW DC fast charging. Recharge times are good with the battery able to charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 35 minutes. It takes eight hours to charge from empty to full using a 16-amp home setup.
Canadian pricing for the 2023 Polestar P2 Single Motor starts at $56,250, including the $2,300 destination fee. The Polestar 2 Dual Motor starts at $61,250, including the destination. Option packages for the single motor model include a Plus Pack for $5,700, which has an upgraded sound system, WeaveTech seats, energy-saving heat pump and a wireless phone charger. The upgraded $4,700 Pilot Pack adds some driver assistance features including adaptive cruise control, pilot assist, parking assistance and blind spot information monitoring.
The Performance Pack to the Dual Motor models offer increased horse-

The Polestar interior also smacks of high quality Scandicool Volvo. A fixed panoramic sunroof makes the light interior even more airy and there is a fairly roomy cabin overall. The front area features fully-electrically adjustable heated seats with lumbar support, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, wireless smartphone charging, and a gamut of tech features accessed by the 11-inch portrait touchscreen. There is the same neat, minimalist, Scandinavian style dash, with few hard controls or buttons. The touchscreen operates and adjusts most functions.
The Polestar is truly green too, and features eco technology such as recycled materials in interior textile surfaces. Technology is high with an Android based Automotive operating system, Google Play and Google Assistant integration and the 13-speaker Harman Kardon Premium sound system. The rear is well finished with comfortable seats and the Polestar offers 405 liters of cargo space, including the additional 41 liters under the false floor. cargo space in the trunk. Space expands to 1,070 litres when
generative braking mode, which can be set to coast or maximise charge with one-pedal driving which is nicely calibrated. The steering is also well weighted and nicely progressive along with fine handling. There is good traction from the 4-wheel drive system when accelerating in all conditions. Suspension errs to soft although the Performance Pack equipped version with the bigger tires rides a little firmer. Suspension is helped in the Performance Pack equipped dual drive models thanks to the included includes the special Ohlins dampers that can be tuned to driver preference. Overall, there is a nice balanced feel to the Polestar 2 on the road. There are some downsides, its not super agile and the Dual motor model packages are pricy.
Still the Polestar P2 is a premium hatchback that can stand against rivals such as the Tesla Model 3, Audi Q4 E-Tron, and Volkswagen ID.3. It can only get better. If you like Volvo’s you will not be disappointed with the Polestar.

Dedicated hubs target repeat violent offending in Lower Mainland
The Province is helping keep people safe by creating hubs of police, dedicated prosecutors and probation officers focused on tackling repeat violent offending in every region of the province. Twelve hubs are part of the Repeat Violent Offending Intervention Initiative, which is focused on targeted enforcement as well as enhanced investigation and monitoring. Hubs will be located in four regions of British Columbia: the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Interior and northern B.C. In the Lower Mainland, hubs will be based in Abbotsford, New Westminster, Surrey and Vancouver.
The initiative is structured to meet the unique needs of each community. The hubs will work with local stakeholders and other existing programs, such as situation tables and Assertive Community Treatment teams, through collaborative information sharing.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community, wherever they live,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “The rise in repeat violent offending is top of mind for British Columbians and it’s also a top priority for our government. We’re taking action by standing up 12 hubs throughout B.C. to harness the expertise and experience that will disrupt repeat violent offending and make a real difference in B.C. neighbourhoods.”
The hubs will be based in Nanaimo, Victoria, Vancouver, Surrey, New Westminster, Abbotsford, Kamloops, Kelowna, Cranbrook, Prince George, Williams Lake and Terrace. Each hub will serve surrounding communities within its region, co-ordinating responses across the justice system and connecting offenders with the services they need to support better outcomes.
“Crimes committed by repeat violent offenders continue to be a concern across the country,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General. “These are tough challenges that require a co-ordinated approach. That’s why we’re investing in dedicated Crown counsel to provide
criminal law advice, and independent prosecutorial support and services to support the hubs and help build safer, more just communities.”
The Repeat Violent Offending Intervention Initiative will be supported by the new Special Investigation and Targeted Enforcement (SITE) program. The Province is investing $16 million over three years so law enforcement can strengthen targeted investigations of repeat violent offending cases and improve information sharing between police agencies.
“The impacts and challenges of repeat violent offenders requires a multi-agency response,” said Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, commanding officer of the B.C. RCMP, Surrey.
“The new Specialized Investigation and Targeted Enforcement program is a step in the right direction. SITE will enhance public safety by adding to the investigative options available to police in B.C. It will also strengthen co-ordination and information sharing between police agencies, similar to the successes achieved with B.C.’s Provincial Tactical Enforcement Priority, which SITE is modelled after.”
SITE will expand police investigative resources and targeted enforcement capacity, and allow police agencies to enhance co-ordination and share information quicker. This funding will make enforcement more effective, improving information gathered for prosecutors and boost police capacity for collaboration.
The Repeat Violent Offending Intervention Initiative and SITE will advance the Safer Communities Action Plan’s goals of strengthening enforcement to hold individuals accountable, and leveraging services to create safe, healthy communities for everyone.
The Safer Communities Action Plan aligns with recommendations from several community safety reports, including the Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act and the BC First Nations Justice Strategy.

How farmers can reduce financial risk
(NC) Farming is becoming more and more unpredictable with the constantly changing environment. Managing the impacts of climate change, fluctuating weather, crop and livestock disease, high input costs and low commodity prices, makes farming a risky business. But there are programs out there that can help.
AgriStability is one program that may help if you face declines in farming income due to production loss (from weather or disease), increased costs or market conditions. The program, which is funded by federal, provincial and territorial governments, offers protection for your whole farm at an affordable rate, so you can receive payments in times of financial distress.
It is part of a group of business risk management programs to help farmers manage risks from severe market downturns and disaster situations. It’s delivered by the federal government in Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador,
and Yukon, and provincially everywhere else.
To qualify, you must have farmed for at least six straight months during the program year, reported your farming income (or loss) to the Canada Revenue Agency for tax purposes, and completed (or attempted to complete) a production cycle during the program year. Individuals, co-operatives and corporations are all eligible. To participate, simply enroll by the deadline, pay your fee and submit your program forms after completing your fiscal year. Find more information at agriculture. canada.ca/agristability.
