Fraser Health to Launch Robotic Surgery Program

A $9 million robotic surgery program will ensure patients across the Fraser Health region have increased access to cutting-edge medical technology and treatment options.

“The robotic surgery program, which is a first in Fraser Health, will benefit patients by enabling more precise and minimally invasive surgery, leading to less pain and scarring as well as faster recovery times,” said Dr. Dave

with urology. After starting with these three surgical specialties, Fraser Health will then look to expand its robotic surgery program to include others. The program is expected to be operational by Fall 2025.

“Robot-assisted surgery has been proven advantageous in shortening patients’ recovery time and I am pleased we will be able to bring this leading surgical technology to

Konkin, regional medical director and regional department head for Surgery, Fraser Health.

The program will operate out of Surrey Memorial Hospital and Royal Columbian Hospital and will be available to all qualified surgeons to help provide patients with the best possible care for many years to come.

Robotic surgery is becoming more common for many surgical procedures, treating both oncological and non-oncological conditions. The process involves a surgeon at a console operating remote-controlled robotic arms that facilitate the performance of laparoscopic procedures.

The first surgical specialties identified to utilize robotics at Surrey Memorial Hospital are ear, nose and throat (ENT) and thoracic, while Royal Columbian Hospital will start

patients within the Fraser Health region,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “This investment is a demonstration of our commitment to innovation and patient-centered care and our work to provide surgeons with access to the best tools available. We look forward to the benefits this new program will provide patients and surgeons for many years to come.”

“We look forward to seeing our highly-skilled surgeons harness advanced technology to further elevate the standard of care we provide to our patients, and perform certain surgeries with greater precision and minimal invasiveness,” said Dr. Victoria Lee, president and CEO for Fraser Health.

“The new program at Surrey Memorial and Royal Columbian Hospitals will enable faster recovery times from surgery, allowing our patients to get back to doing the things they love with their families and friends.”

“We are delighted that patients at Royal Columbian Hospital will have access to robot-assisted surgery,” said Jeff Norris, president and CEO, Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. “This technology will also help attract and retain top surgical talent and be available in training programs, so medical staff may safely and proficiently use it. We thank our donors for their passionate commitment to bringing innovative treatment options to our community.”

Supporting Youth at the Foundry

Foundry is a safe place for youth to receive a variety of health and social services in Abbotsford. And when it was discovered the organisation needed to replace their autoclave—a steam based sterilisation machine— Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation jumped at the opportunity to fund this vital item to improve health quality.

see we have tight space here. And so this is perfect…the process takes 24 minutes, whereas the other took up to 48 hours”.

Speaking further to Cindy Dunlop, primary care office manager, said the process “has made autoclaving and cleaning of instruments so much more efficient than previous. Our old autoclave had a funky door and you had to stand there and fill it; and now

Autoclaves are used to decontaminate biological waste and sterilise surgical instruments through a process of steam, pressure and time. Autoclaves operate at a high temperature and pressure with the intention of killing infectious agents microorganisms and spores.

Dr. Elizabeth Watt, long time physician, Foundry Abbotsford, described the new autoclave as, “a safer more reliable procedure for us. It’s taking less staff time. And it’s allowing us to recycle our surgical instruments. And the other thing is we had to shut down the other one, and we didn’t have one at all. So we’re thrilled with this autoclave and as you can

we simply close the door, lock it, and press start”, see image one and two. Effective interventions require all kinds of stakeholders and engaging system capacities. New funding improves children’s care at Canuck Place

Seriously ill children and their families receiving care at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice will benefit from improved care and services as the Province invests $4.5 million to renovate and upgrade the Vancouver hospice facility.

“No one wants to think about their child requiring hospice care, and when they do need that care, they should be able to focus solely on their child,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “The new funding will allow Canuck Place to make needed upgrades to their facility, so that children and their families can continue to receive care in a safe and comfortable space during a vulnerable time in their lives.”

The funding will go toward enhancing patient care rooms, improving the ventilation system, structural repairs to the roof and exterior of the building, making accessibility improvements and creating a new building for administrative functions. Construction is expected to be complete by 2025.

“With the support of the Province of B.C., Canuck Place can now address much-needed upgrades to our Vancouver hospice,” said Denise Praill, CEO, Canuck Place. “This investment will improve quality, safety and efficiency in care for over 870 children with lifethreatening illnesses and their families from across B.C. and the Yukon. On behalf of our expert clinical team, staff, volunteers and children and families, we are grateful for this funding.”

Established in 1995, and now operating out of two locations in Vancouver and Abbotsford, Canuck Place provides care in home, in hospice and in hospital for pain and symptom management, medical respite, education and art, music and recreation therapy, end-oflife care, and grief and bereavement counselling at no cost to families across B.C. and the Yukon.

Canuck Place was the first children’s hospice in North America and is internationally recognized as a leader in pediatric palliative care.

Komagata Maru Commemoration Unveiled in Abbotsford: Honoring a Legacy of Resilience

In a momentous event, the City of Abbotsford paid tribute to the passengers of the Komagata Maru by unveiling the "Komagata Maru Way" street sign and an interpretive plaque at the Heritage Sikh Temple National Historic Site. The initiative, spearheaded by Raj Singh Toor, Vice President, and spokesperson for the non-profit Descendants of the Komagata Maru Society, holds profound significance for the South Asian community and marks a step forward in recognizing the injustices faced by those who journeyed aboard the Komagata Maru in 1914.

The Descendants of the Komagata Maru Society, comprising 15 families across Canada who are direct descendants of the ship's passengers, worked tirelessly to achieve this recognition. For these families, it was a deeply personal endeavor, as they carry the collective pain of their ancestors' rejection by Canada due to racist immigration laws.

The Komagata Maru incident unfolded in the backdrop of Abbotsford, where the Sikh community had already made substantial contributions to the region's growth. As early pioneers, Sikhs played vital roles in the labor force, supporting lumber mills, railway projects, and industries in the area. In the summer of 1914, when the fate of the Komagata Maru hung in the balance, Sikhs in Abbotsford rallied to assist by offering food, water,

money, medicine, and even trying to lease the ship to prevent its return. After years of advocacy, Raj Singh

Toor successfully conveyed the significance of acknowledging the Komagata Maru incident to the City of Abbotsford. Both parties recognized that commemorating this historical event would provide an opportunity for the community to reflect on systemic racism in Canada and inspire a commitment to combat discrimination and promote inclusion for a better future.

The unveiling ceremony witnessed the heartfelt presence of Raj Singh Toor, who was officially invited by Mayor Ross Siemens to the event. Together, they unveiled the "Komagata Maru Way" street sign and the accompanying interpretive plaque, standing as a testament to the resilience and courage of those who suffered during the tragic episode.

The commemorative renaming of a section of South Fraser Way to "Komagata Maru Way" is accompanied by an educational plaque and kits

that will ensure the story endures for future generations. This gesture serves as a reminder of the diverse makeup of Abbotsford and Canada, underscoring the significance of different ethnic communities coexisting harmoniously.

Raj Singh Toor expressed his gratitude to Mayor Ross Siemens, the councillors, City's manager Terra

Dickinson, Sue Federspiel, Dr. Satwinder Bains, and all the City of Abbotsford staff for their unwavering support and commitment to recognizing the Komagata Maru passengers. He believes that the "Komagata Maru Way" street sign and interpretive plaque will not only educate the community about its past but also foster a legacy of acceptance and tolerance for future generations.

In conclusion, the "Komagata Maru Way" street sign and interpretive plaque stand as a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who faced adversity and injustice. While the past cannot be undone, this commemoration strives to build a legacy that embraces diversity and cultivates understanding among Canadians, British Columbians, and Abbotsford residents, forging a more peaceful and inclusive tomorrow.

08/20/1935 – 07/21/2023

With utmost class and respect, we recount the life of Gurcharan Singh, a remarkable individual born on August 20, 1935, in Sehna, Punjab. In pursuit of a better life, he embarked on a journey to Canada in September of 1959, where he worked diligently in various labor-intensive mill jobs until June 1964. The eve before his wife, Surjit, arrived in Canada, Gurcharan found himself parked in front of the Post Office in Mission, BC, tears in his eyes, earnestly praying for employment as his wife was about to join him. On that very day, a stroke of fate intervened, as he received a call from Whonnock Industries, offering him a job starting the next day. He worked there devotedly until 1989 when he retired.

In June of 1965, they welcomed their first son, Bayant, and their second son, Amarjit, followed in September of 1972. A loving husband and father, Gurcharan exemplified hard work and dedicated service to the community. One significant testament to his unwavering commitment to the community lies in an incident surrounding the historic Abbotsford Gurdwara. the title for the Abbotsford Gurdwara was held by the Ross Street Gurdwara committee due to the absence of a charitable society in Abbotsford. At that time in 1975 Gurcharan Singh Dhindsa, along with other devoted individuals, went to the Vancouver Ross Street temple, locked and loaded to take action. The communist organization were awaiting with chains and bats ready to battle. Despite facing opposition, they persevered, with Gurcharan Singh fearlessly defending their cause, wielding his kirpan and battle on the Gurdwara grounds commenced. Eventually the opposition gave in and Gurcharan Dhindsa was restrained with the promise of the title being returned. Not only did they retrieve the title for the Abbotsford Gurdwara, but the titles for the New Westminster and Victoria Gurdwara were handed back as a result of this this incident. It was at the moment in history that the 3 Gurdwaras became independent. This was a historical for Gurcharan Singh Dhindsa and the other devotees marking a moment of strength, determination, and dedication to the Guru Ghar.

Gurcharan was the founding president of the Mission Gurdwara and was responsible for the initial fundraising. He also served the Dasmesh Punjabi School Board for 10 years.

Throughout his life, Gurcharan faced numerous health challenges, each time displaying extraordinary resilience. His remarkable spirit extended beyond his personal life as he played a pivotal role in establishing the Mission Sikh Gurdwara, contributing to its fundraising and fostering community unity. In 1988, he underwent CABG with five bypasses and four stents, and over the years, he faced further health issues, including three stents in 1997, CABG with valve replacement and four bypasses in 2002, colon cancer in 2014, a significant stroke in 2016, cancer below the eye in 2019, lymphoma in 2021, and, finally, in 2023, lymphoma spreading throughout his body, leading to his passing.

His family doctor aptly described him as an exceptional example of resilience. Gurcharan Singh's memory will forever endure in the hearts of his family, loved ones, and all those fortunate enough to have experienced his warmth and benevolence. May his soul rest in peace, leaving behind a legacy of courage and compassion

3 helpful tips to boost your immune system as you age

Eat well

The food you eat is the fuel your body needs to function. Consuming a variety of foods, including plenty of fruits and vegetables, to get all the nutrients you need while minimizing the amount of processed foods you eat will help you stay healthy.

Smoking and drinking alcohol both negatively affect your immune system, so you should avoid or minimize consumption of both if you’re looking to boost your immunity.

Remember adult vaccines

Throughout one's life, vaccination including adult vaccinations provides effective protection against disease. While many of us are familiar with childhood vaccinations, they don’t provide lifelong immunity against every disease. As well, some vaccines are prescribed only for adults.

Adults require helper, or booster shots to maintain immunity for some conditions. And, if you didn’t get all your

shots as a child, you could still be at risk of infection from vaccine-preventable diseases.

For example, if you are among the 90 per cent of Canadian adults over 50 years old who’ve had chickenpox –you should consider a vaccine to help prevent shingles. It’s a painful disease caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox.

Exercise regularly

Regular exercise improves your cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure and helps protect against a variety of viruses and diseases.

A balanced diet and regular exercise will also help you maintain a healthy body weight, which in turn helps boost your immune system.

While exercise is important, allowing your body to rest is equally valuable. Sleep is the tool your body uses to recharge its batteries, including your immune system.

Doug McCallum and Safe Surrey Coalition Welcome Province’s Decision to Move Forward with Surrey Police Service

Doug McCallum, Councillors Doug Elford, and Mandeep Nagra of the Safe Surrey Coalition express their satisfaction with the Province’s decision to direct the City of Surrey to proceed with the Surrey Police Service (SPS). This decision fulfills a key platform promise made by the Safe Surrey Coalition during the 2018 elections, demonstrating their commitment to delivering on the mandate entrusted to them by the citizens of Surrey.

“For the past five years, the citizens of Surrey have been eagerly anticipating the establishment of the Surrey Police Service. Today’s decision by the Province reaffirms that this is the best choice for public safety in our city, and it marks a momentous occasion,” stated Doug McCallum.

“We are delighted to see our vision become a reality, and we are grateful for the support we =have received

from the Province throughout this process.”

The journey to establish the Surrey Police Service has not been without its challenges.

Both the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Surrey Police Service have faced significant pressures during this transition period.

Councillor Doug Elford wishes to extend his gratitude to all frontline law enforcement members from both organizations for their dedication and service to the community.

“Today, we call upon the residents of Surrey to join us in expressing our gratitude to all those who have worked tirelessly to ensure public safety in our city,” emphasized Councillor Doug Elford. “This decision allows us to move forward, heal any divisions, and foster collaboration for the betterment of public safety for all residents and neighborhoods in Surrey.”

Councillor Mandeep Nagra added, “This has been a very divisive process in our city since October, and it is now time to come together, heal wounds, and work collaboratively for the best public safety for all of Surrey’s residents and neighborhoods. Today’s decision is a testament to our dedication to serving the people of Surrey.”

The Patrika Auto Review: 2023 Ford F-150 SuperCrew Ecoboost Hybrid Pickup

It is a commonly known fact, the venerable Ford F-150 has been the top selling pickup for decades now and is the gold to aim for. Indeed, it has also been the best-selling vehicle in North America.

And Ford is not stopping at vehicle embracing hybrid and electric battery electric technology in its pickups either, Witness trucks such as the AllElectric only Ford Lightning trims with an EV driving range of 386 km, and the Ford Maverick compact truck that offers a hybrid engine.

And so, to the full-size SuperCrew F-150 Ecoboost engined hybrid as tested. There are a number of engine options in the F-150 dependent on trim including a 3.3L V6 with 290 horsepower, a 2.7L Turbo EcoBoost – with 325 horsepower, and a 5.0L V8 for 400 horsepower. Our F-150 SuperCrew tester was equipped with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 mated to a hybrid system (A 1.5-kWh battery pack with twin electric motors.) churning out 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque. It is a full self -charging hybrid. All engines have a ten-speed automatic transmission including the hybrid. Towing capacity for the SuperCrew is 12,700 lbs, and four-wheel drive is standard.

The F-150 SuperCrew Hybrid begins at $74,950 plus options, while the F-150 Lightning comes in three trim

levels that range from $79,000 to $121,000. The SuperCrew has either a 5-ft 6-inch bed or a 6-ft 6-inch rear bed.

The 2023 Ford F-150 SuperCrew Hybrid arrives with features such as: leather seating surfaces, dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel and seats. Fords Sync4 Infotainment system with features including: 12inch touchscreen. navigation system, smartphone (wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, HD radio, satellite radio, as well as a Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Options on our tester included the FX4 Off-Road package, power running boards, twin panel moonroof, Pro power on board 7.2KW generator, Interior work surface, portioned fold flat storage system, 360-degree camera, MAX trailer package and Smart Hitch package. There is also an upgraded B & O premium 15-speaker audio system, power tailgate and tailgate step, and a spray in bedliner, plus much more.

The base price of our SuperCrew was $74,950. Total options raised the price to a heady $94,739 plus

destination and delivery at $2,095. Not a cheap truck! Cabin ambience is upmarket od, with high quality trim, comfortable seats, a roomy fold up back seat and plenty of cabin space and storage options.

One cool feature on the hybrid SuperCrew is the 7.2-kW Pro Power onboard generator that can power external accessories. Ideal for the remote worksite or camping ground!

The 2023 Ford F-150 Hybrid comes standard with a wide range of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, intersection assist, traffic sign recognition, trailer reverse guidance, trailer backup assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, driver-attention monitoring and reverse automatic emergency braking, and more.

On the road, the F-150 Hybrid proves to have a planted, solid feel to it.

The hybrid engine battery and motor produce a combined 430 total horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque for good power delivery. There is good acceleration and the hybrid powertrain performs well in all driving conditions and road terrain and has a good turn of speed uphill and with heavy loads or trailers.

You can also turn on EcoBoost mode, which enables the V6 to increase rev range to create more electric power for the hybrid’s battery. Safe driving dynamics are helped by the steering,

which feels light and reasonably precise. The F-150 can be a tad bouncy over really bad roads and bumps. But load it up and it flattens out nicely.

The hybrid powertrain allows the F-150 to deliver very decent fuel economy around town and on the highway with an official figure of 10.4 L/100km combined, 10.5 city and 10.4 highway.

There is a lot of practicality to the Hybrid as well as better fuel economy. The cabin is refined and comfortable, while the power tailgate, tailgate step, a power outlet in the rear bed and multiple tie-down point for different loads means it is ideal for work and play. And of course, there is the onboard generator has the ability to plug in electrical tools and what have you for power.

To sum up, the F-150 Hybrid is everything you expect a Ford F-150 to be a capable, durable reliable and rugged. Plus, it has impressive load carrying and towing capacities. No negatives really, in our testers case; the $94,730 price with options was surprising. Still, the F-150 SuperCrew is an impressive truck anyway you parse it. Highly recommended.

2023 FordF150 SuperCrew Ecoboost hybrid; base price-

$74,950. Total Price with options$94,739 plus destination and delivery at $2,095.

What to know before getting your first credit card

(NC) Are you starting post-secondary school and considering getting your first credit card? It can be exciting to get a credit card for the first time. It provides the opportunity to build credit – something that most adults need. But it’s important for new credit card holders to know what they’re getting into and how to use their card wisely. Here are some things to remember:

Understand interest

If you can’t pay the full amount, it’s a warning sign that you may be spending more than you can afford. Avoid paying interest by paying off the entire balance of a credit card every month. Interest charges can add up quickly, build up debt and hurt your credit score. Bad credit can follow you for years to come.

Designed to help new cardholders understand exactly how interest works, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada has a credit card payment calculator that lets people see how

long it would take to pay off a credit card if they don’t pay the full amount each month.

Build credit in a secure way

If you’re uncertain about getting a traditional credit card, consider starting with a secured credit card. To get one, you must provide your bank with a security deposit to cover the credit limit. If you don’t make your payments, the bank may use your deposit to pay the money you owe.

These types of cards can help you build a good credit history without the risk of defaulting.

Know your rights

Banks must follow certain rules about your credit card agreement. For example, they must clearly set out the key features of the credit card in an information box that appears on your monthly statement. This includes details such as the interest rates and other charges such as annual fees.

Your bank may make changes to the features or the terms and conditions of your credit card. If they do, they must provide you with the details in writing at least 30 days before the changes take effect.

If you have not been keeping up to date with work that needs to be done much pressure will arise as a result. You will not be able to leave it any longer. This could also apply to any laziness when it comes to looking after your health and general well being. Getting a new foundation in place can be easier than you anticipate.

Let go of anything that doesn’t seem to fit with what you want in the future. There will be a greater desire to free yourself up personally but this won’t happen without making some decisions. There needs to be a basis of practicality when it comes to what you can actually manage. Over-extending yourself will not get you anywhere.

New things could start to become important to you, especially if finances are involved. These are decisions you need to make for yourself and not in response to pressure from what others expect. There is no way of escaping certain obligations but you need to take action in deciding on how you are going to take care of them.

The New Moon this week occurs in your own sign and with it can come some insight into what you should aim for long term. This will likely mean some sort of endings with a person or people in your life now. Not that the whole picture will be clear just yet. Practical information or fact gathering could be necessary for a while yet.

Be cautious with decision making this week as you could be easily inclined to over commit yourself. This could occur because there are hidden aspects and in your enthusiasm they will be easily overlooked. Some sort of difficulty or disagreement could arise over money matters and especially so if money has been owed a while.

You may need to stand your ground when it comes to something important to you on a personal level as you meet opposition from somebody who feels they have greater authority in some way. The main thing is to remain mentally optimistic when it comes to changes you want to make in the future. Be patient and resist pressure.

Somebody else does not necessarily have your best interests in mind and for this reason you need to be very cautious when it comes to taking on any new responsibilities. They could end up being a lot more work, which could prove overwhelming in the end. You need to remain mindful of your own priorities.

It might be time to take a more serious approach to what takes precedence in your life. This could mean cutting back on things you like to do or have but are not really a true necessity. The opportunity to enjoy the company of others who are out of the ordinary in some way could generate new directions in your life in the future.

You can be put under pressure to take responsibility for something that needs to be put into place, which might mean a bit of work you would rather not have to do. You could learn something useful and might even benefit from the way somebody else handles similar situations. It will leave you clear to focus on future plans.

New directions with other people can take shape. This could prove rather insightful for you, giving you a sense that there needs to be some sort of definiteness or finality established. Your thoughts and decisions need to be practical and you would be better not to consider anything that could be risk taking in the future.

If you are not happy with regular routines, you could now have the opportunity to inject new life into them. This can be associated with leaving the past behind in some way and entering into situations that are very much out of the ordinary. People you meet as a result might be a bit over the top but just enjoy the company.

If there is somebody around you with a dominant attitude, it could very well come to a head this week. Don’t let your emotions get the better of you. It is possible to control yourself and remain calm and poised on the surface at least. You have the knowledge at your disposal to simply deal with the facts. That will win out in the end.

Kajol on limits of women

Actress Kajol’s character Noyonika in web-series The Trial, exemplifies every woman navigating through demanding expectations, and resonates with the challenges they encounter in their quest to balance the diverse aspects of life.

The Fanaa actress said, “The great thing about Noyonika is that every woman identifies with her. As women, we are taught to be a good mother, a good wife, a good person and to fulfill all of these roles to the nth degree at every point in your life.” “That’s where Noyonika was at, where she felt like she’s perfect at everything and at the same time when her world came crumbling down she realised that she can’t be good at everything, she cannot be a good wife and a good mother and a good person, there are so many facets and she cannot manage all those balls and she realises that it doesn’t matter at the end of day,” said Kajol. She further said that Noyonika’s journey is what we all go through as women. “What we are juggling through as women, some come to it a little early in life and some a little later,” she added. The TrialPyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who has enjoyed immense success in cinema and OTT alike, believes that content is powerful these days and there is nothing wrong living in the grey. Karan along with Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, the lead pair of his upcoming film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, was interacting with students and mediapersons at an event as part of the ‘India’s International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) Back To School’ series. “I do believe that the content today is definitely broadening the human spectrum of relationships and pushing the envelope, by not sugar-coating it or doing puff pieces of love and romance. We are showing the grey areas, and you have to know, especially as students, that life is way beyond black or white,” said the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai director. “Walking the path of grey every day, it is not a bad thing, because grey is the actual representation of your vulnerable side, of your true side. And I think whether it’s OTT platforms or new-age cinema, all of them expose the vulnerabilities of human beings and that is the strength of our content today,” he added. Also starring Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is slated to hit the theatres July 28.
