British Columbians urged to prepare for winter conditions

As more winter weather rolls in provincewide, now is the time for British Columbians to prepare for extremely cold temperatures, power outages and slick streets.

A series of strong storms will clash with cold Arctic air throughout B.C. during the holidays, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada. Periods of heavy and blowing snow, freezing rain and very cold weather are likely in many parts of B.C. between now and New Year’s Day.

Be prepared for power outages: Severe weather can cause power outages. Be prepared for up to one week by developing a household emergency plan and putting together an emergency kit. If you come across a downed or damaged power line, assume it is live and a danger. Stay back at least 10 metres (the length of a bus) and call 911 immediately to report.

Highways 3 and 99 are mountainous routes with steep grades and winding curves, and weather and road conditions can change quickly. Drivers are reminded to plan ahead and drive according to weather and road conditions if they must travel during the upcoming holiday season. This is especially important, given the impacts of the floods that caused significant damage to British Columbia’s highways and roads.

A little preparation can go a long way to keeping people safe during stormy, wintry conditions. Here are some tips to keep safe this winter: Prepare for extreme cold: Environment Canada will issue arctic outflow warnings when extremely cold winds that can create wind chill values of -20 C or colder are forecast for six or more hours. Use caution and limit outdoor exposure under these conditions, as there is an increased risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Parents and pet owners should be particularly mindful of children and pets being outdoors during these times.

“I encourage everybody to travel only if necessary this winter to keep each other safe and keep roads open, so essential goods can be delivered to communities,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Road conditions can change quickly. If you must travel, check the weather and plan routes Wear your winter gear: Always wear before you leave to be as prepared clothing appropriate for the weather. as possible.” Dressing in layers, with a wind- and Highway 5 is available to commercial water-resistant outer layer, provides vehicles with a minimum licensed flexibility for changing conditions. gross vehicle weight (GVW) of Cover as much exposed skin as pos11,794 kilograms. sleep and get out of the cold and rain. These emergency shelters supplement more than 2,250 permanent, year-round shelter spaces. The extreme weather response shelters are available overnight when a community issues an extreme-weather alert. Be prepared on the road: People should bring warm clothing that does not restrict movement when driving and ensure their vehicles are equipped with a full tank of fuel, a windshield scraper and snow brush, food and water, a first-aid kit and other emergency supplies. If stuck or stranded, people should stay in their vehicles and call 911 for roadside assistance.

Slip & Fall Accidents on Icy Sidewalks: Who Is At-Fault?

ooler temperatures and wet weather lead to slippery sidewalks. In some cases, falls on icy sidewalks cause minor bruises or strains that quickly heal. In other cases, a slip and fall can result in significant soft tissue injuries, fractured bones, or serious head injury/concussion. Regardless of the severity of your injuries, you may be entitled to compensation following a slip and fall—but first, you must identify who was at fault.

include a property owner, a landlord, or a tenant. Consider these factors that may impact who is responsible for an icy sidewalk:

If you slipped and fell in front of a business, is the city, the business, or both responsible for the condition of the sidewalk? (On this point, note that there are shorter limitation periods for bringing a slip and fall injury claim against a municipality.)

Investments to improve water quality and system efficiency create good local jobs, address the economic challenges brought on by the pandemic and climate-related events, and help build the infrastructure communities need to recover and thrive. Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities and the Honourable Josie Osborne, British Columbia’s Minister of Municipal Affairs, announced more than $19.2 million in joint funding for four

Safely brighten your holiday season (NC) Many of us may be putting more into holiday decorating this year in anticipation of hosting family and friends over the festive season. This means decorations of all kinds strung around the home and lights that twinkle and keep everything aglow. Lighting that’s merry and bright Before choosing the right places for your light decorations, take a moment to check for any damage after a year or two being tucked away — including cords, plugs, exposed wires and ornaments. If anything is broken, don’t use it and replace right away. Less is more Although you may want to deck the halls more than last year, remember that simple décor can go a long way. Pick a few statement items for bigger areas in the home, and don’t be afraid to leave smaller areas untouched.

— NOMINATE NOW! —

An easy way to make sure little ones are getting in on the holiday decorating spirit is to ask for their advice on where things should be put, or even the right playlist to set the mood. Be sure to keep electrical decorations and cords out of the hands and mouths of children and pets, too. Be sure to turn off and unplug any lights before going to bed or leaving the house or use an approved automatic timer to perform this task for you. Pack lights and ornaments safely to protect them from any potential damage while tucked away until next year.

Festive pudding to satisfy your hunger and your health (NC) There are a lot of temptations during the holidays. Between desserts, drinks and special occasion foods, you may consume more sugar than usual. To help keep your health in check, here are a handy tip and a delicious festive dessert idea: Don’t go to a dinner party or potluck unprepared. Normally loaded with refined sugar and carbs, desserts can get tricky — especially if you have a health condition such as diabetes.

Elli AvrRam joins cast of 'Ganapath' with Tiger Shroff The Tiger Shroff-starrer ‘Ganapath’ has made another addition to its cast in the form of Elli AvrRam.The actress is into martial arts, which makes her entry into the cast even more interesting given that Tiger is known for acrobatics and martial arts skills. The actress, who earlier finished shooting the half schedule of her film ‘Goodbye’ costarring Amitabh Bachchan, Neena Gupta and Rashmika Mandanna, said, “This year has been really grateful for me. After the success of my song ‘Har Funn Maula’ and now ‘Goodbye’, I’m very excited to begin my journey for ‘Ganapath’. I’m currently in London shooting for it. It’s a really cool script and I’m

very excited to be a part of the film.” The film directed by Vikas Bahl (‘Queen’), also stars Kriti Sanon and Rashin Rahman, and is produced by Jackky Bhagnani, Vashu Bhagnani and Deepshikha Deshmukh under the banners of Good Co. Production and Pooja Entertainment. Earlier, Elli AvrRam also bagged the Best Actress honour at the Stockholm City Film Festival for her Swedish short film ‘With You’, which touched upon the topic of mental health awareness and childhood trauma.

Was skeptical about Sara Ali Khan at first : Dhanush

I have fallen in love with music again : Sheykhar Ravjiani With megastar Amitabh Bachchan writing a note of appreciation on social media to multiple reels and cover versions of his debut independent song ‘Rang’, music director and singer Sheykhar Ravjiani says he is falling in love with music all over again. In conversation, Sheykhar, who is also one half of music duo Vishal-Sheykhar, shares everything from his new look to the changed spelling of his name and taking a new screen name. Sheykhar said “I have fallen in love with music again and that kicked me to start a new journey as an independent music creator. I have been doing music in Bollywood for the last 25 years and will continue to do that in all the coming years.

Indira Tiwari on working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali A National School of Drama pass out, Indira Tiwari will next be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi. The film will have its World Premiere at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival and would be releasing in theatres on 18th February 2022. Expressing her excitement on being a part of SLB film, Indira says Sanjay Leela Bhansali is her dream director. The actress shares, “I can’t talk much about the film

PAGE 22

But during the lockdown, when I got time enough to just sit down and talk to myself I realised that there is a different kind of music I want to explore that is beyond the kind of work that I have done. “I am one of those fortunate musicians who has received all the love from the audience since the beginning of my journey. But as an artiste, I also want to challenge myself. ‘Rang’ was the result of my thoughts and creative expression rolled into one.” He further added, “It is interesting how the parameter of validation has changed now and honestly I am loving that. Now, we know that the song is working when fans make reels video on Instagram and put out cover versions. Social media is flooded with compliments and on top of it, Mr Bachchan blessed me for the song on Twitter. I am on top of the world!” The song ‘Rang’ is composed and sung by Sheykhar. The song is written by Priya Saraiya and the music video is directed by Ravi Jadhav.

How do you steal a few weeks from Dhanush’s date diary and convince him to headline a Hindi project? Offer him a compelling script — that’s all the Tamil star asks for. Yet, in the next instant, the actor throws a curveball, saying that he hadn’t heard the script of his next, Atrangi Re, until the last moment. “When Aanand L Rai [director] and Himanshu [Sharma, writer] approached me, I directly asked them when they needed me. I told them I will come [for the shoot] and hear the script then. So, I made them narrate the script to me one week before the shoot. That is the kind of faith I have in them,” begins the actor, who made his Bollywood debut with them in Raanjhanaa (2013). With Atrangi Re, Rai explores another facet of love through the journey of the carefree Rinku, essayed by Sara Ali Khan. While the director was convinced that Khan would be the perfect choice for the protagonist, Dhanush admits he had doubts about his co-

star initially. “That kid surprised me. Playing Rinku is not easy, even for seasoned actors. I asked Aanand, ‘Are you sure about this? She has done only two to three films. Can she handle this?’ I was skeptical and hesitant about Sara at first. But when I walked into the set, I saw the hard work she put in; she surrendered to the director. She was willing to do anything to get each shot and song right. Sara will surprise the audience.” In an industry where stars are obsessed with vanity, it is refreshing to come across an actor of Dhanush’s calibre who can mould himself according to the demands of every role. He believes his biggest strength is his everyman appeal. “It takes great discipline to have sixpack abs; I can’t take away from it. But I play the other kind [of man]. You’ll see me everywhere on the streets. I reflect the common man, his successes, pains and joys. That works brilliantly for me. I think women like intelligent men more than anything else.”

Always wanted to be part of a Christmas movie : Freida Pinto

Actress Freida Pinto, who plays music manager Megnah Rai in ‘A Christmas Number One’, says she fulfilled a career ambition by starring in a festive flick.Pinto said “I play a music manager on the hunt for a Christmas hit song. It’s a romcom but it brings in quite a few other elements. It’s funny and heartfelt. Our goal was to put smiles on people’s faces and bring cheer to their lives.“I’ve always and my role but this one is very wanted to be part of a special to me because I worked Christmas movie. with my dream director.” Indira I’ve been on the also feels lucky to be a part of lookout for the Serious Men. “Coming from perfect one to the same school, be part of and Nawazuddin Siddiqui and I here it is.”The became good friends while ‘Slumdog working on the film,” she Millionaire’ adds.

actress also shared that the 2006 movie ‘The Holiday’, which stars Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet,is her favourite Christmas movie, reports femalefirst.co.uk Asked for her choice of festive viewing, the Indian actress said: “‘The Holiday’. It’s with Cameron Diaz, who doesn’t seem to age. We were watching ‘The Mask’ the other day and I was like, ‘How has she not aged one bit?'” Freida Pinto was previously in a relationship with her ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ co-star Dev Patel and is proud to see how his career has progressed since their amicable split in 2014. The actress said: “Look at the amazing strides Dev has made in his career – the first IndianBritish guy to be playing David Copperfield. I mean, come on, that’s huge! That’s massive! “And then I’m so excited about him in ‘The Green Knight’. It’s been a tough journey because you’re constantly getting stares and glares, like, ‘You want to play what?’ I feel like we’ve earned it now.”

New CT scanner coming to Mission Memorial Hospital

People in Mission are one step closer to shorter wait times and closerto-home access to computed tomography (CT) scans with a new CT scanner coming soon to Mission Memorial Hospital (MMH). “Currently, residents of Mission and surrounding areas must access outpatient CT scans at regional hospitals across the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland, while those seeking inpatient care are transferred to Abbotsford Regional Hospital,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “The approval of the business plan for a new CT scanner and the renovation of the medical imaging department at MMH will mean that patients will have better access to highly effective diagnostic imaging that will help improve the services people count on, closer to home in the community they live in.” During 2019 and 2020, 7,422 CT scans were performed at Fraser Health hospitals for residents in Mission and surrounding area. The addition of

a CT scanner at MMH will reduce wait times at Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH) in the medium term.

“We are very excited that Mission residents will no longer have to travel to other regions and endure long wait times to access a CT scan. It is critical for emergency care, inpatient hospital care and outpatient care,” said Bob D’Eith, MLA for Maple RidgeMission. “Thanks to the provincial government, Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation and our donors for making this a reality.”

If there is anything you feel unclear about when it comes to somebody else, you should set out to discuss it. This could clear up presumptions or uncertainties on both sides. An opportunity can present itself which will allow you to make future plans that can be pleasure orientated or that will satisfy your priorities more so.

Your interest will be moving forward in a manner that will open you up to greater freedom and enjoyment in the long term. Other people involved might be expecting more than you can realistically manage. There will be challenges but as long as you focus on the details or work that needs to be done you will eventually get there.

You could realise the amount of work involved in something you thought was important, isn’t worth it. You may need to change your priorities based on the expectations of somebody else. Before you do, you should consider the amount of control or the limitations that come with this. Your independence can’t be put aside

Work hard on finalising things that need to be put into place so that you will be free to enjoy yourself more. It will not hurt to question any pressure somebody else is placing on you to perhaps get things done more quickly. It might simply mean pointing out the amount of work involved if matters are to be dealt with properly.

Anything that has been important to you on a personal level during the last two years can now reach a stage where you feel you are in a better position to do things your way. You might get some opposition from somebody who thinks they know better but there will be ways of either getting support or working around them.

Follow what you believe is the most balanced approach when it comes to putting things in place or dealing with family matters. Don’t be influenced by somebody attempting to make you feel guilty or perhaps sorry for them. You need to act on what you consider you can handle because it will work best and be the most efficient.

It may be necessary to make a final decision to end something that has proved inefficient or a big time wasting exercise, otherwise it can hold you back over the next 2 years. You need to weigh up opportunities that you know you can enjoy against accepting limitations that can result in restricting potential future growth.

Being prepared to be serious, as well as putting in the effort required to get a good foundation in place that you can continue to develop long term has every potential to reap successful rewards. It might take a while to be as financially satisfying as you would like but if you are determined to persist, your rewards will materialise.

In any situation where discussion will take place be cautious as to the underlying agenda of those involved. This is not a time for you to be forthright with your ideas to get things going. You need to see what is put forward. That way it will become obvious as to where there is support, as well as the opportunity to have your say.

Catching up with friends or acquaintances and be most relaxing and enjoyable as long as you ensure your responsibilities don’t suffer. There is no reason to spend more money than you feel comfortable about. Stand your ground in any situations where somebody else expects you to accept the way they want to do things.

Finances could encourage you to reconsider something that was an important priority, especially if it involved travel or that it was for reasons of getting away from it all. You could enjoy the feeling of having money behind you for when the unexpected arises. Being able to let your mind wander can be a relaxing practice.

There is little point in attempting to avoid responsibilities, especially with people who have authority in some way. You will benefit more from being prepared to negotiate in such a manner that you give assurances you will see things through. From your standpoint, you need visualise yourself taking these future directions.

As this year comes to an end, I reflect on the challenges we faced this year as a community. I am thinking of our fellow community members, some of whom are going through the hardest times in their lives having lost their homes and livelihoods. I take pride in the solidarity we shared through these times. I am thankful for the city that we live in, and the people it is made up of. I hope the holiday season brings peace to your homes, warmth in the company of your family and friends, and joy in hope for a new and brighter year. From my family to yours, Happy Holidays. Brace for snow by winterizing your home (NC) It’s no surprise that Canadian winter weather can be unpredictable. That’s why it’s good practice to ensure that you — and your home — are ready for whatever rolls in with the cold temperatures. With the Farmer’s Almanac calling for above-normal levels of rain and snow this year, make sure your home is ready by following these three tips:

FROM THE GARDEN TO THE PLATE FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED

1. Check your furnace. Make sure your furnace is in good working order by booking a furnace inspection before the coldest part of winter hits. Wait times can be longer as we get deeper into the season, and that’s the worst time to make do without. Regular maintenance and inspections can save you money in the long run. 2. Insulate doors and windows. Keep the warmth in by installing or replacing weather-stripping or weatherstrip film. When you turn your heaters on, ensure your baseboards are clean and test each one to see that they’re working properly. Heat rises, so start with the basement first. 3. Empty exterior pipes.

Water expands in the cold, so when severe cold snaps hit, pipes can be at risk of bursting. To avoid having your water pipes freeze and burst, empty all exterior taps, and shut off the valves until next spring With these tips, you’re well on your way to protecting your home.
