SFU RESEARCH TO BRING FRESH, LOCAL BLUEBERRIES TO B.C. MARKETS IN WINTER

A team of Simon Fraser University (SFU) researchers is working to develop new plant varieties and precision indoor growing techniques for producing fresh, local blueberries during the off-season for the first time. The team, led by SFU biological sciences professor Jim Mattsson, is exploring how biotechnology, advanced physiological methods and precision indoor growing techniques will help maximize plant productivity while minimizing water and energy consumption, even in the

depths of winter, resulting in fresher, better and more sustainable produce. “If you have an indoor environment, you can tell the plants when to produce leaves and when to produce flowers and fruit,” Mattsson says. “You’re not dependent on the season and weather. You can change the light intensity, day length, and temperature to get the full potential of different blueberry varieties.”

The Canadian blueberry season runs from July to the end of September. For the rest of the year Canada imports nearly half a billion dollars of blueberries from countries such as Mexico and Peru. These berries have a higher carbon footprint than local berries and are typically four to five weeks old by the time they reach Canadian grocery stores. Like other imported produce, they are vulnerable to shipping delays and other supply chain issues that can result in spoilage and shortages that undermine our food security. A home-grown solution needs to be both energy efficient and profitable for farmers. The research is being done in partnership with B.C.-based agritech company BeriTech Inc. with $1 million in support from the Weston Family Foundation as part of the Shepherd Phase of the Homegrown Innovation

Challenge. The research team is evaluating selected blueberry varieties under controlled environmental conditions to better understand how factors such as temperature, lighting and airflow can be used to enhance their growth. The first round of growth trials are underway at BeriTech’s research farm and at SFU. The research team will also be exploring ways to use resources more efficiently, reducing water and energy use and recycling fertilizers to reduce waste. They are also considering how they will introduce a brand-new category of food to Canadian consumers, with support from Beedie School of Business professors

Terri Griffith and Andrew Harries.

ABOUT THE HOMEGROWN INNOVATION CHALLENGE

Delivered over six years, the $33 million Homegrown Innovation Challenge supports the development of tools and technologies to enable Canadian farmers and producers to grow berries out of season – sustainably and competitively. We believe that by accomplishing out-of-season berry production, we can unlock solutions for myriad other fruits and vegetables.

ABOUT THE WESTON FAMILY FOUNDATION

At the Weston Family Foundation (formerly The W. Garfield Weston Foundation), more than 60 years of philanthropy has taught us that there is a relationship between healthy landscapes and healthy people. That is why we champion world-class health research and innovation with the same passion that we support initiatives to protect and restore biodiversity on Canada’s unique landscapes. We take a collaborative approach to philanthropy, working alongside forward-thinking partners to advance Canada and create lasting impacts. We aspire to do more than provide funding; we want to enable others to find transformational ways to improve the well-being of Canadians.

ABOUT SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY

Who We Are

As Canada’s engaged university, SFU works with communities, organizations and partners to create, share and embrace knowledge that improves life and generates real change. We deliver a world-class education with lifelong value that shapes change-makers, visionaries and problem-solvers. We

Dr. Jo-ann Archibald has been announced as the University of the Fraser Valley’s fourth Chancellor.

Also known as Q’um Q’um Xiiem, OC, Dr. Archibald is an esteemed scholar, member of the Soowahlie First Nation, Professor Emeritus of Educational Studies at UBC, and a recipient of an Honorary Degree from UFV (2022). In 2018, she was appointed as an officer of the Order of Canada for her substantial work in Indigenous education. She is well known as a leading Indigenous education scholar who played a key role in weaving Indigenous content and ways of knowing into the curriculum at the K-12 and university levels. Her deep roots with UFV trace back 50 years to its inception as Fraser Valley College in 1974. “I’ve always valued the commitment and care of the university in the ways that it addressed Indigenous education for Stó:lō people and Indigenous people more broadly,” she says. “I’ve witnessed UFV's remarkable growth over the past five decades, yet at the same time I feel it’s important that the university

continues to address the needs of the region.” Dr. Archibald began her career teaching elementary school, before attending graduate school and joining the faculty at UBC. Later, she was the first Associate Dean of Indigenous Education in a Canadian university. In this role, she substantially increased the numbers of Indigenous undergraduate/graduate students and faculty members, expanded Indigenous course and program offerings, and established Indigenous Ph.D. scholarship funding. In 1983, she became the coordinator for the Chilliwack cohort of UBC’s Native Indian Teacher Education Program (NITEP), which was based at Fraser Valley College (now UFV). This program allowed Indigenous students to learn in a cohort and stay near their home communities for the first two years before moving to UBC. With all her academic experience, Archibald feels one key component stands above all else — the place we call home.“Think

of the land itself,” she says.“Stó:lō people have cared for this land since time immemorial, so that many generations could live well. Now, as a Canadian society we're facing crises, which relate to climate, social, and economic issues. UFV can continue to be proactive in addressing these issues through the programming it offers. Stó:lō Elders have taught us that the environment and the land have to thrive in order for people to thrive. I believe that the university can play an even greater role in realizing this teaching.” As Chancellor, Dr. Archibald will serve as the ceremonial head of UFV, presiding over Convocation and conferring UFV credentials. As a representative of the public interest at the university, she will act as an ambassador for UFV. The Chancellor is appointed by the UFV Board of Governors upon the recommendation of the Alumni Association and consultation with the UFV Senate. The Chancellor serves

as a member of the Board of Governors and the UFV Senate.

Dr. Archibald begins her new role on April 1, 2024, following two terms by long-time champion of community engagement and integration, Andy Sidhu. Previous chancellors include community leaders Dr. Gwen Point and Brian Minter. This is an especially important announcement to make on the eve of UFV's year-long 50th anniversary celebration launch on April 4. Dodge Delivers World’s First and Only Electric Muscle Car. – 2024 Dodge Charger EV.

Windsor, Ontario - Dodge is igniting a new era of automotive muscle, announcing the global debut of the world’s first and only electric muscle car and the brand’s first multi-energy muscle car: the all-new Dodge Charger.

The next-generation Dodge Charger electrifies a legend — the Charger will retain its title as the world’s quickest and most powerful muscle car, led by the all-new, all-electric 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack, which delivers 670 horsepower, is expected to reach 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and will run the quartermile in an estimated 11.5 seconds. Electrified versions also include the 496-horsepower 2024 Dodge Charger

Daytona R/T.

The all-new Dodge Charger features standard all-wheel drive for all models and will offer performance choices via multi-energy powertrain options — the 550-horsepower Dodge Char-

ger SIXPACK H.O. powered by the 3.0L Twin Turbo Hurricane High Output engine and the 420-horsepower Dodge Charger SIXPACK S.O. fueled by the 3.0L Twin Turbo Hurricane Standard Output engine.

“The electrified 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack delivers Charger Hellcat Redeye levels of performance and announces its presence through the world’s first Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust, while Hurricane enginepowered Dodge Charger SIXPACK models will give the Brotherhood of Muscle a gas option that produces better horsepower and torque numbers than the outgoing 5.7 and 6.4-litre HEMI engines,” said Tim Kuniskis, Dodge brand chief executive officer – Stellantis. “The next generation of Dodge muscle has arrived.”

Two-door coupe versions of the allelectric 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack and 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona R/T will begin production in

mid-2024. Production of all-electric four-door Daytona Scat Pack and R/T will begin in the first quarter of 2025. Gas-powered two-door Dodge Charger SIXPACK H.O. and fourdoor Dodge Charger SIXPACK S.O.

The all-new Dodge Charger introduces the first fully electrified muscle car to the Dodge Brotherhood of Muscle. Next-generation Dodge Charger models represent the first vehicles to debut the STLA Large platform, that has the potential to carry extreme power. A variety of suspension modules and powertrain cradles can be employed to suit vehicle-specific performance objectives.

with better thermal performance through a rigid casing, resulting in lower battery temperatures during high performance driving. The nickel cobalt aluminum chemistry of the battery cell provides more power per gram — the battery-electric version of high-octane fuel.

The all-electric, all-wheel-drive Dodge Charger Daytona is driven by a 400V propulsion system that delivers supercharged V-8 performance with zero tailpipe emissions and instant torque response. The system incorporates a high-voltage battery pack, a dual integrated charge module and both a front and rear electric drive module (EDM). The front EDM employs front wheel end disconnect, improving range and efficiency, while the rear EDM includes a mechanical limited slip differential to increase traction and performance. Both front and rear EDMs feature 3-in-1 architecture (inverter, gearbox and motor), with each generating 335 horsepower (250 kW) and 300 lb.-ft. of torque.

The battery pack delivers 100.5 kW installed capacity and a peak discharge rate of 550 kW — specifically designed to maximize acceleration by allowing the motor to utilize the most power the battery can output in the span of a quarter mile.

The battery cell structure is prismatic, offering a more structurally stable cell

The 400V propulsion system packs six performance levels into one powertrain. The 2024 Charger Daytona R/T arrives with a standard Direct Connection Stage 1 upgrade kit that adds 40 horsepower to reach a total of 496 horsepower, while the Daytona Scat Pack is delivered with a Stage 2 kit that offers an increase of additional 80 horsepower, taking total output to 670 horsepower. Future Daytona models will require purchase of Direct Connection Stage kits to upgrade from base models to Stage 1 and Stage 2 performance.

The all-new Dodge Charger presents a distillation of muscle car design through a modern muscular exterior that focuses on function, avoids excess and subtly acknowledges inspiration from the clean, timeless lines of its predecessors. The all-new Dodge Charger will be built at the Windsor (Ontario) Assembly Plan. Final pricing and availability is to be announced.

Waterfront Revitalization Master Plan Presented to International Audience

Mission, BC—A small delegation from the City of Mission recently presented the Waterfront Revitalization Master Plan at Le marché international des professionnels de l'immobilier, otherwise known as MIPIM, during a week-long exhibition, conference, and networking event that gathered over 26,000 attendees in Cannes, France.

Since 2007 35

The City was awarded the opportunity to attend the international summit by the Economic Development Association of Canada and Canadian Deputy Director of MIPIM. In the adjudication statement, the committee called the Waterfront Revitalization Master Plan Canada's “most outstanding investment opportunity 2023.”

As part of the award, the City of Mission was provided with an exhibition space and free attendance at MIPIM to showcase the Waterfront Revitalization Master Plan.

“Our experiences at MIPIM demonstrated that there is a global interest in projects like our Waterfront Revitalization,” said Mayor Horn. “In addition to the leads we collected while there, we also took away important lessons for how we can work with landowners and stakeholders to market these lands and to incorporate environmental and social elements that will make the project appealing to investors.”

The feedback and interest in the plan was tremendous. Throughout the

conference, staff answered questions, held meetings, and engaged in conversation about investing in Mission.

“It was clear that the development community is daunted by working with government, so many of our contacts were impressed and encouraged to see that this project has such strong Council and Provincial support,” Horn added. “Many expressed to us that they would be hesitant to consider investing in a project of this magnitude if there was no clear municipal vision.”

Following the success of the experience, the team will be following up on leads and planning the upcoming local waterfront landowners and investors forum.

“As a result of MIPIM, we are better prepared for our next steps, which will include connecting property owners to the marketplace,” said Horn. “We met with investors and international realtors who want to interact directly with landowners in the area.”

Supplements vs. supplemented foods: Are they one and the same?

(NC) You’ll find a lot of advice online about supplements. But have you heard of supplemented foods? Some supplements and supplemented foods can contain the same ingredients and therefore, should not be consumed together.

Supplemented foods are packaged foods or drinks with one or more supplemental ingredients added to them, such as caffeine, minerals like calcium, vitamins like vitamin C and amino acids like L-leucine. Some of these products carry cautions about consuming supplements and supplemented foods together.

To help you find these cautions easily, Health Canada introduced new regulations that require updated labels for supplemented foods. As of January 1st, 2026, all supplemented foods will be required to have these new labels, but you might start seeing them sooner.

Supplemented foods with cautions will carry an identifier with an exclamation mark and the words “Supplemented” and “Health Canada” on the front of the label, alerting you to read cautions

written on the back or side of the product. An example of a caution is: “Do not eat or drink on the same day as any other supplemented foods or supplements with the same supplemental ingredients.”

All supplemented foods will have a supplemented food facts table instead of a nutrition facts table. It includes the same nutrient information, with the addition of a “Supplemented with” section listing the type and amount of each supplemental ingredient.

Learn more about supplemented foods and their labels at canada.ca/supplemented-foods.

3 tips to keep your home-based business safe and secure

(NC) Your home is your sanctuary. But if you run a home-based business, it could also be your office, showroom, storage locker and more. Therefore, it is doubly important to protect it and its contents. Here are three ways to protect your home and business.

rIal iestyt tRYNjLYksLn jfiedfd plfinMg inwjI plfinMg notrfeIjLysLn spONsrisLp icwTI Xfqrf icwTI notrI syvfvF bhuBfsLfeI gfhk aDfirq syvfvF

Protect your vehicle

Whether you need it for deliveries, to source supplies or to get to client meetings, your vehicle could be essential for you to run your business. To reduce the risk of theft, park it in a locked garage if possible. If not, steering wheel locks can act as a deterrent. And always double-check that you’ve locked the doors when you leave the vehicle.

An after-market anti-theft tracking device can help police quickly recover your vehicle if it gets stolen. It also helps if the keys to your vehicle are kept away from the main entrance to your home.

Spring clean the exterior

No one wants to deal with flooding in their home. But a flood can be especially problematic if you have a basement home office or supply room in your house. Make sure your eavestroughs are cleaned each spring and fall. Also, check that the downspouts extend at least four feet from the foundation, and the yard should be graded to slope away from the building. If you have any window wells, keep them clear of leaves and other debris as well.

Get proper business insurance

If your business is based out of your home, know that while some home insurance policies may cover certain activities for your business, a standard home insurance policy may not be enough for a home-based business. There are a variety of policies and add-ons available for small businesses. Business interruption insurance, for example, covers expenses or loss of income during a temporary closure of the business due to something covered by the insurance policy.

Something could become very obvious where somebody else is concerned, which could be surprising. This is not a time to react quickly. You have moved into a cycle until May where you need to sit back and contemplate before you move forward with anything. This situation may get you to question what is important in life.

Activities with friends or in any situation that involves you with a group of people could get busier than you anticipate. You could get annoyed with somebody who wants to take the lead or assume authority. It might make you realise where you can easily be left with a lot of the work if you just go along with these things.

This would be a good time to May to start working on any future goals you have been formulating since mid February. This might also be a time where you will get a better idea of the commitment involved. Just how much it might cut into the time you like to have available to relax, could certainly begin to get your attention.

You can become busier than ever over the next 6 months when it comes to involvement with other people. This could entail a lot of running around but it might also be more on the information or communication sides of things. It can be difficult to know where somebody else is coming from between now and May.

Many things can come to light, particularly with home and family, over the next 6 months. Endings and new beginnings can be part of the mix. You have come out of a challenging time when it comes to others that has been in effect since mid February. Up to May focus on future possibilities that could eventually be pursued.

Others could place many expectations upon you from now to May in a manner that will make you feel guilty if you do not comply. Some of this could have started from mid February but now is the time to stand up and fight for whatever you consider is a fair thing. Don’t be put off because it is hard to work out what somebody else really thinks.

The Lunar Eclipse this week occurs in your sign. This can result in all sorts of personal recognition or generate situations where you are seen. This can be the case for the next 6 months. It could also encourage you to transform things about yourself or matters that involve you, so that you can gain greater pleasure from life.

The more effort you have put into getting some sort of order in place since mid February, the greater will be the pleasure you experience from that up to May. You can probably relax a bit but might need to be careful of being led astray by others who may not be approaching things seriously. It is better to stay on the practical path.

You need to put your energies into getting a good structure in place up to May. If things need to be done at home, leave them no longer. Family matters could come up as well, especially where there are differences of opinion. This could shine a light on things important to you of which you need to be highly mentally determined.

There has been the opportunity to put new things in place that suit you personally since mid February. You could now become aware of what this could open up to in the future – the next 6 months can be important. Up to May, you need to be mindful of your finances. There can be the temptation to spend on impulse.

Don’t enter into any agreements too quickly up to May, without giving yourself time to think about the commitments attached and just how much this can increase your levels of responsibility. There will be invitations and social activity in the mix as well. Though enjoyable, you could find this will interrupt more practical plans.

Mars has moved into your sign, where it will remain until the 1st May. This should lift your energy level as well as your self confidence. Since mid February it may have been difficult to push yourself but now that should be a different matter. The only thing you have to watch is doing things on impulse. Much can be accomplished.

The Mission Health Care Auxiliary Donates $7,000 to the Mission Memorial Hospital

A generous donation has been made to Mission Memorial Hospital (MMH) for the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment.

Mission Health Care Auxiliary has helped to fund next-generation technologies and facility enhancements at the hospital for more than a century. The Auxiliary has helped the hospital in purchasing: blanket warmer; bariatric stretcher; scope cabinet; and different types of wheelchairs. Their continued support is rooted in their

humanitarian support towards service of community.

The organisation, created in the 1920s, with humble beginnings has continuously provided support to the hospital by building better health care for the people of Mission. Member of the Auxiliary leadership team Alyce Campbell echoes the long-time passion of service saying, “it is a pleasure to be part of our community, to be able to raise funds to support MMH and The Residence in Mission (TRIM)… to me, this isn’t about giving back, it’s about something I love to do, work with people”.

And their support is very widely appreciated by all those in the hospital space. As Trevor King, patient

ambassador at MMH, states “a thank you to the Mission Health Care Auxiliary…this is great equipment to add to our inventory to loan out to those in Mission who need it”.

The Mission Health Care Auxiliary has a wonderful gift shop and thrift shop in the community of Mission that supports the hospital, and we could not be more grateful for all that they do. As the saying goes, “volunteers don’t necessarily have the time; they have the heart”.

Lakeland Flowers Returns with Its Annual Summer Flower Festival

Lakeland Flowers returns with its sixmonth cascade of flowers, beginning with the Abbotsford Tulip Festival. Positioned as Canada’s premiere tulip festival with 35 acres of tulips and field flowers of which 28 acres will feature over 100 varieties of tulips, the fields are set to create a dazzling display of colour. Highlights include walking trails, specialty varietals that have been imported from Holland and a legacy tulip named after Peter Warmerdam, Nick’s father. “We were so grateful to meet the thousands of people who came to our farm last season. Connecting with visitors is my favourite part of the festival,” says

Nick Warmerdam, farmer and owner of Lakeland Flowers. “Every year we improve the visitor experience and this year we added more photo opps, tulips, and specialty varieties. From the end of May and on, our guests can expect to see more blooms right until early September.” While April and May bring tulips and assorted field flowers, May and June feature over 30 acres of peonies, lupins, Siberian wallflowers, and lavender. Lakeland Flowers’ summer flower festival ends with over 40 acres of sunflowers, 80 varieties of flowering crops, and 20

bicycles, swings and raised viewing platforms. Visitors are also welcome to enjoy live music nights and to pack a picnic or sample food truck meals. Online tickets are available one week in advance with tiered pricing options for weekdays and weekends. It is strongly recommended that visitors purchase tickets online to not only receive reduced pricing, but to secure a time-slot. Daily field reports will be provided on the Lakeland Flowers website and social media channels. Lakeland Flowers is the closest tulip festival to the Greater Vancouver area, located in Abbotsford and right off of No. 4 Rd. Flower farming in Canada runs deeply within the Warmerdam family,

beginning with Peter Warmerdam in the 1950s, his son Nick in the 1980s, and Nick’s daughter Alexis in the 2010s. Nick’s farming background began with field-grown cut daffodils, gladiolas, peonies, and tulips before diversifying into greenhouse-grown tulips. Over the 50 years Lakeland Flowers has operated, it has grown and sold millions of fresh-cut flowers across Canada and the US. Today, the Warmerdams continue to grow and

The youngest maestro of Gurmat Sangeet – Arjanveer Singh!

The American Sikh Council congratulates Arjanvver Singh on rendering the gurmat kirtan in all 31 classical raags. For a 12-year-old middle school student who grew up in upstate New York, it is a phenomenal achievement. Thanks to his dotting grandmother Chindderjit Kaur who took it upon herself to nurture the precocious child and start him on the journey of gurmat sangeet. Arjanveer accompanied his grandmother regularly to the gurdwara and while listening to the kirtan frequently, took a liking to it. With a natural affinity to music, he also plays the violin in his

middle school and regularly plays for the school orchestra. Bhai Manmohan Singh taught Arjanveer Singh the basics of music and the harmonium online for nearly four years during his early years. After he turned nine, he started learning gurmat sangeet under Bhai Sewa Singh. Bhai Pardeep Singh taught him the Afgani Rabab for three years via online tutoring. Finally, Dr. Gurnam Singh, took him under his tutelage. Dr. Gurnam Singh decided that the rendition must be done before his voice cracks, therefore with the help of his nephew Dr. Manpreet Singh the entire recording was done

in New Jersey. Each shabad done in particular raag is being released every week. Arjanveer Singh was honored by Harjinder Singh the President of the SGPC at the Darbar Sahib complex on Feb 24, 2024. His CD album was released at the Darbar Sahib. Sri Raag, Jai Jaivanti raag and Vadhans raag were released on the first day. A committed and super disciplined student, Arjanveer spent nearly two and half years, to become proficient in the 31 main raags of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Arjanveer Singh has been a regular camper at Camp Fatehgarh since he was little and has been an asset to the overall health and positive growth of the Sikh summer camp. Arjanveer Singh has and will inspire many young Sikhs to take up gurmat sangeet seriously as part of their path of Sikhi. The American Sikh Council (ASC) wishes the youngster the very best in his future endeavors and we are confident that he will shine in whatever he does. He makes us all proud! The American Sikh Council

is the umbrella organization representative of Sikhs in the United States.

It is an elected body of Sikh Gurdwaras and institutions. Currently 76 Gurdwaras and other Sikh institutions across the nation are members of ASC. The major governing purpose of the organization is to represent the collective view of Sikhs in the United States. ASC works to promote Sikh interests at the national and international level focusing on issues of advocacy, education, and well-being of humankind.
