nimals bring unconditional love and happiness to our lives. Our cover features a beautiful view from Flanary’s Keepsake Farm. Dr. Flanary and her furry children, Ellie, Rosie, and Fancy, are joined by Dr. Kayla Ferrell and her kids, Gabby and Jenny. Dr. Ferrell is the new veterinarian at Flanary Veterinary Clinic. Join the Birthday Paw-ty!
To celebrate their 25th year in practice, Flanary’s Paw-sitively Purrr-fect Carnival will take place on June 11 from 10am - 2pm. The clinic parking lot will transform into a carnival complete with a petting zoo, raffle drawings, and interactive pet games like Stack the Bone. Stroll with your pup around the dog Cake-Walk & Sit to win your pup a canine-friendly cake. Guests can tour the clinic, meet the staff, and see the newest technology in vet care.
Meet Dr. LaNita Flanary, DVM
Dr. Flanary grew up surrounded by animals. In 1995 she graduated summa cum laude from Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Just two years later, she built and opened Flanary Veterinary Clinic in Reidland. “This isn’t just my 25-year career, it’s what I love,” Dr. Flanary told me. “I have worked in the vet field since I was 18 and have been a veterinarian since I was 27. I look at my animals as if they were my children, and I will treat your animals as my own. The bond Dr. Ferrell and I share with our pets allow us to understand how important your pets are to you. We will give them personalized, caring attention geared toward all the phases of your pet’s life.” Although she wasn’t raised in a barn, she raises her kids in one - goat kids that is. At Keepsake Farm, Dr. Flanary loves and cares for over 100 goats, 50 cows, and a brood that includes chickens, pigs, ducks, geese, and rescued cats. Learn more about the growing farm and see pictures of the adorable animals at flanaryskeepsakefarm.com or, visit their Facebook page.

new to the veterinary field. She began working at Flanary Veterinary Clinic in 2015 as a kennel worker. She advanced to a technician before heading to vet school. Her trusty steed, Bo, accompanied her during those years. She is a 2022 graduate of Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “I knew from an early age being a vet was my calling,” Dr. Ferrell told me. “It’s neat to be back and see familiar faces I cared for while in boarding. Now they come to see me as a doctor! Growing up, we raised sheep and goats, so I’m always excited to have them as patients.” Both doctors completed a full circle cycle from kennel keeper to doctor. Each job at the clinic gives the doctors a deeper sense of knowledge and appreciation for every position.
New Technology
Dr. Ferrell is trained in the latest digital radiology, including endoscopy and ultrasound procedures. Cats, dogs, and all exotic animals can undergo an ultrasound to find underlying problems that may not be detected with an x-ray. “I enjoy dermatology and surgery, but ultrasound technology fascinates me,” said Dr. Ferrell. “My newest project is offering endoscopy procedures. It is so valuable in many ways. For example, a dog swallows an object like a toy or piece of clothing. Foreign objects are extremely dangerous and even life-threatening once inside the stomach. With an endoscopy, I can find and retrieve the object nonsurgically. The new 3D ultrasound is an amazing tool. I can perform ultrasound-guided procedures on pets just as they can be performed on humans.” Both doctors believe every aspect of veterinary medicine is important for all animals. There are a few areas they like to focus on. Advanced dental care is at the top of the list as 80% of pets develop dental disease by the young age of 3 years old. “I strongly believe you can extend the life of your pet by taking care of their teeth,” said Dr. Flanary. “Routine cleanings and sealants keep your pet’s teeth healthy and that keeps their entire body healthy. People tend to forget that just as our dental needs affect our heart, kidneys, and liver, the same applies to pets.”

Seasonal and flea allergies are very common in animals. Dermatology and allergy testing are available for a comprehensive analysis, as well as a treatment plan for your pet’s allergies. Life stage preventative care programs are crucial to finding subtle changes in your pet’s health before they become a major problem. From babies to seniors, having routine check-ups including vaccines and blood work provides a baseline knowledge of your pet’s health. By knowing what’s normal for them, it’s easier to find a problem should one arise. From dogs and cats to exotic potbelly pigs and iguanas, all animals deserve the best care. “Client education is a must,” said Dr. Flanary. “Part of our job is teaching you how to give your pet the best care so they can stay with you as long as possible. It is a joy to keep animals healthy so they can bring happiness to owners for years to come.”
Boarding and Spa Days
The next time you need boarding services, call FVC! Their facility has all the comforts of home to provide your pet a spoiled rotten hotel stay while you are away. Pets enjoy the climate-controlled area complete with a fenced exercise area, and there’s plenty of play and treat time. The cat condos provide a cozy environment for your favorite felines. If your pet needs vaccines or a dental check-up, you can schedule that during their stay.
Pet Desk
Apps make life easier in our technologically advanced world. PetDesk is a free app you can download on both iPhone and Android to communicate with the clinic. You can make or confirm appointments and get test results quickly. Telehealth appointments are growing in popularity for pets. Video chats and two-way messaging are also available so that you can talk with the doctor even when visiting the clinic isn’t an option.
Curbside Service with a Smile
During the height of the pandemic, the only way patients were seen was curbside. The staff goes a paw above to make sure pets and pet parents are taken care of. Clients can be seen in the exam rooms or choose the convenient curbside visit option. “Curbside is an option for everyone, but especially appreciated by those who have difficulty getting in the clinic with their pet,” explained Dr. Flanary. “If you’re a mom with kids in the car or an older couple with mobility issues, let us come to you.”
The Flanary Mission
Flanary Vet Clinic is committed to providing your pet the best care and love while entrusted with their dedicated professionals. They firmly believe that health is best maintained through preventative care. Their team understands the special role your pets have in your family and they are dedicated to becoming your partner in your pet’s healthcare. All patients are treated with compassion and gentle hands. Your pet deserves the best, and that’s what they offer without compromise. “We are both Paducah natives and are honored to serve our community by doing what we love,” said Dr. Flanary. “I have years of experience and Dr. Ferrell brings in new modern technology. We have worked together for years and, combined with our eleven full-time and six part-time staff, we make an amazing team! ” If you are looking for the best healthcare for your family pet, call Flanary Veterinary Clinic at 270.898.9PET (9738). Happy Couple Happy Home By Cassie Johnson with Emerald Therapy Center
O
ur home should be our retreat and the place we feel most comfortable. But unwanted guests such as stress, worry, doubt, and fear enter our front door no matter how hard we try to prevent it. Work, school, family events, sports schedules, and the chaos of everyday life are a continuous cycle. Family counseling sessions are a wonderful way to help your family cope with the stress of the daily grind. "The family is a system similar to our bodies,” said Kim Rowe, LPCC with Emerald Therapy Center. “The breakdown of one organ in the body impacts everything. When one member breaks down it has an impact on the entire family because the other members of the family work to compensate for the injured family member. Everyone must be on board to help,”
Counseling is great for communication, growth as a couple, and a form of support that keeps away the unnecessary issues that can hurt relationships. Couples sessions can deeply impact your relationship for the better.” From sibling rivalries and behavior issues to financial disagreements or conflicts with extended family members, help is just around the corner. Prioritize your family relationships by calling today to schedule your consultation.
Both adults and children can build empathy and understanding toward one another while maintaining healthy boundaries to reduce the risk of conflict. Find a therapist or counselor that your entire family is comfortable working with to achieve the best results. A happy home starts with a happy couple. Marriage counseling can be a valuable tool before and after marriage. According to a survey from the American Association of Marriage and Family, 97% of surveyed couples feel they got adequate help needed through couples therapy. 93% of couples who attended therapy agreed therapy gave them the strategies needed to easier handle conflict when it arose in their relationship. “Most assume counseling is only needed when something is wrong, someone was unfaithful, or divorce papers are in the works,” Esther Malm, PhD, LMFT told me. “This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Summer Read & Feed By Karen Hammond
“S
chools out for Summer!” as the 1970s song goes. (I’m showing my age). Time for kids to relax, play and spend time with mum, dad, and siblings. But for many children, parents are at work and their older siblings may be hanging out with their friends or working as well. There’s no school breakfast or lunch, and not much to do but go to the playground or park. Young children suffered a lot during the pandemic; many lost critical skills and struggled with remote learning. It was already hard for some to keep up with their peers, and now there’s another long break from the routine and security of their school. Theresa Wilkins has noticed this scenario playing out many times. She’s been a teacher and librarian for more than a decade and this school year she taught 2nd grade at McNabb Elementary in Paducah. Wilkins is also the founder of the Paducah/McCracken County Read and Feed Program. A FREE academic camp that takes place every Thursday this June at 11 am.
Free Books, Free Lunch
“I started the program in 2017,” Wilkins told me. “It’s designed to be a free, fun, family program where children age birth to 10 years of age can come for lunch, books, activities, and read aloud’s. Older kids and volunteer readers are encouraged to participate as well. All kinds

of different families show up – homeschooled children as well as city and county kids. I am super excited and I cannot wait to see those kids’ faces this summer!” “St. Mary’s School Summer Feeding Program is providing hot lunches. The food will be just like a full lunch that they would serve at school during the week. We will have books to give away and guest readers.”
2022 New Location
“The first few years were at Keiler Park but while teaching at McNabb, I became aware that many families and kids from my school utilize the Rotary Playground. It has lovely facilities and is closer to the families and children we typically serve. We are planning to put up tents and create shade in the very hot weather. In the past, we had to cancel in inclement weather. This year I’m looking for a school, church, or alternate site for when it rains.” Because of the pandemic, Wilkins was unable to hold the program in 2020 or 2021. “I’m thrilled to be able to hold the camp this year,” Wilkins said. “In prior years we have received grants from McCracken County Early Childhood Education. They’ve paid for books for children aged birth through five years, as well as guest readers from Market House Theatre. MHT did an interactive reading and the kids enjoyed that a lot. We have also had Cindy Bird, a member of Lone Oak Lions Club as a guest reader. She dressed up as Little Bo Peep and did interactive reading, games, and songs. The kids loved it!”
Community Supporting Literacy
“Local organizations such as Knights of Columbus, the Lone Oak Lions Club, and Downtown Kiwanis have been incredibly supportive. They have donated money for food and supplies. Truly, the community has been amazing. When the Knights of Columbus came they grilled lunch. Those wonderful men made a point to talk to every single family and kid. They spoke about reading and how it affects your life and helps you see the big picture. It was the most precious thing. “ Wilkins is passionate about books and reading. She purchases many of the books that are given away herself. “I go down to the used bookshops in Nashville and book sales,” she told me. “I love kids and I want kids to read books to find a place of escape, knowledge, and peace. I think books can give them that - at least some of them. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a kid looking at a cover and smiling with anticipation at what they’re going to find in that book – for me, there’s nothing better.”
How YOU can help
Want to support this great local program? Wilkins needs your gently used books and she’d love some guest readers. If you’re a drama student, senior, or have some free time call her. If you’d like to donate snacks or drinks for children to take home she could use those as well. If you have a space where the program can go on rainy days, please let her know. Please email her at wilkinsmomof3@gmail.com or call 270.519.9870. For updates, more information, or for rainy day alternative locations please visit facebook.com/PMCReadnFeed.

Keep Calm and Get Fit! By Cassie Johnson
W
e all want to live healthier lifestyles, but let’s face it - sometimes it can be hard. Getting fit is one thing, but staying fit is another. Maybe your schedule doesn’t allow visits to the gym or maybe you feel like you can’t meal plan on a tight budget. Have you tried diet and exercise with no results? We have tips to help you get fit and stay healthy - no matter what your lifestyle.
Put a plan of action behind your goal that makes it reachable.”
Find Your Why
“It’s encouraging to have someone in your corner cheering you on,” said Sporea. “Support from home, work, or social media can make all the difference. Check Facebook for different accountability groups. If you feel like you need a little extra support, consider seeing a certified nutrition coach or nutritionist who can help get you started.”
Do you want to have better overall health? Do you have a set goal like running a 5K that you need to train for? Does it feel like your family doesn’t get the best version of you because you don’t feel up to par? When you find your reason why you need to make a few changes, it’s time to plan.
Set Your Goals
There is no such thing as instant gratification when it comes to health and weight loss. Remember to be realistic. “Realistic goals aren’t always fun to set,” Morgan Sporea, owner of Bless Your Heart Nutrition and certified nutrition coach told me. “Be honest with yourself about your current life situation and whether those goals are sustainable. Losing 40 pounds in a month is NOT realistic, but losing 3-5 pounds in a month is. Remember, a goal without a plan is just a wish.

Power in Numbers
The phrase two is better than one is a fact when it comes to accountability. Some people have plenty of discipline and dedication within themselves, but a support system is critical.
Plan & Prep Ahead
Meal prepping can be a great tool for anyone attempting to eat a more balanced diet. If you feel overwhelmed, you don’t have to plan for the whole week. Plan for your busiest days of the week and cut out those drive-thru visits. With Pinterest at your fingertips, the possibilities are endless. Freezer meals, individualized snacks, and portion-controlled meals don’t have to be tasteless or leave you hungry. Free apps like AnyList and Mealtime Meal Plans to help you organize grocery shopping when you fill out your meal plan.

Get Moving
There’s no set way to exercise, so find what’s right for you. Whether you crave the satisfaction of sweat running down your face during cardio class or prefer yoga in the air conditioning, remember one thing: Keep moving! Free apps like FitOn offer dozens of workouts such as HIIT, toning, and pilates that you can do from the comforts of home whenever your schedule allows. “Walking is a simple way to exercise and get your whole family involved,” said Sporea. “Our kids are always watching us. Implementing healthier habits in our own lives will create a ripple effect in theirs. Take advantage of the cooler mornings and evening hours by getting outside for a walk. Especially in the summer, hydration is key! Always keep a water bottle with you and build a water goal habit. A good rule of thumb is half to one ounce of water for every pound you weigh.”
Check Your Metabolism
Sometimes changing our diet and exercise just isn’t enough. If that’s you, you’re not alone. Perhaps you should consider having your metabolic function tested. Metabolic function is a necessary process in our body such as building up tissues and storing energy. The body breaks down the tissues and stored energy to get more fuel for body function. Metabolic improvement can lead to better blood sugar, improved cholesterol, and lower levels of inflammation in the body. “There are many benefits of exercise, but getting the most out of your exercise requires a good understanding of how best to perform it,” said Dr. Ryan Frazine of Frazine Energy & Fitness Lab. “This includes what volume of exercise and at what intensity. One of the main benefits many people hope to achieve is improved metabolic function.” Better metabolic health can be achieved with proper exercise, weight control, and improved body composition. Dr. Frazine advises educating yourself on Zone 2 training. Zone 2 training is performing a steady activity while maintaining a set heart rate for 45 - 50 minutes two or three times weekly. “Training at a lower intensity may fail to produce the benefits you want,” said Dr. Frazine. “There are several ways to determine if you are in Zone 2. Use a fitness tracker like an iWatch or Fitbit to measure your heart rate during exercise to make sure you are working at the right intensity to get the maximum benefits.” Specifically, a V02 exercise test on a treadmill or bike under a doctor’s supervision can tell you how many calories you burn per hour in different training zones. Your lean body mass is a primary factor in how you burn calories. “There are multiple types of body composition tests that can be done to help you understand how much is lean body mass versus body fat,” explained Dr. Frazine. “V02 testing will also tell you how many calories you burn per hour in different training zones. With guidance on exercise and diet changes, you can feel more confident in reaching your goals.” If you have struggled to lose weight with diet and exercise, getting a more accurate idea of how many calories your body burns in a day may be helpful. By combining your test results with calorie tracking, you can make steady progress toward your weight loss goals. Making your health a priority isn’t selfish, it’s an investment toward a better life. Feel better about yourself while having a more positive impact on those around you. You may be surprised at the benefits that trickle in, including better sleep, more energy, and lowering your risk of heart disease and stroke. You can’t put a price on your health, and we encourage you to get up, get moving, and get healthy.

Get Ready for Kindergarten! By Cassie Johnson
S
tarting school has been far from traditional these last couple of years. Mask mandates, social distancing, and other restrictions have made school days challenging for students, teachers, and parents. It’s especially tough for incoming kindergartners. Due to the pandemic, many children were not able to attend daycare or preschool. Walking into kindergarten will likely be their first organized school experience. The McCracken County Early Childhood Council is determined to make the transition to kindergarten easier than ever. The McCracken County and Paducah City school systems are joining forces to focus on the five domains of school readiness: Social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and language. County and City schools will each host a kindergarten readiness event.

County will hold a Kindergarten Screening event. It’s an opportunity for incoming kindergartners to have a school day experience without other grades being present. “At Jumpstart, each kindergartner will receive a bag full of goodies including flashcards, puzzles, puppets, and other fun activities,” explained, Leslee Cope, KIDS First Coordinator. “We want parents to be familiar with the instruction and learning activities their child will be doing. Teachers will share tips with parents on things such as counting, patterns, and letter recognition. Some daily tasks are overlooked such as being able to open their lunch containers or pull up a zipper after restroom breaks. These are just some of the things teachers will discuss with parents at Jumpstart.” To find out when Jumpstart will be held in your school district, contact the McCracken County Board of Education. will have a different program schedule. Please follow your school on social media to get the most current information.
Paducah City Schools
The Paducah City Schools family resource centers for Clark, Morgan, and McNabb Elementary are hosting a Kindergarten and Preschool Readiness booth at the 8th of August Celebration. School readiness bags will be given out to families with children entering kindergarten and preschool. The bags contain academic manipulatives and information on the five domains of learning for young children. “This year’s family needs assessment shows a significant gap in early learning for children ages 0-5 years in the McNabb district,” said LaToya Benberry, KIDSCOTOO! Family Resource Center Coordinator. “Our early learning programs, including the 8th of August celebration, are the first of many steps in reversing that trend.” Families can enjoy the parade, games, and other activities while meeting the friendly faces of school district personnel. The goal is for kids and parents to each feel comfortable before the first day of school. “We are excited to be in the heart of our City School families with our school readiness information,” said Robyn West, from KIDS Company 1 Family Resource Center. “This is a community-wide event that is both well known and well attended by our families. We can’t wait to connect with them at this event before school starts.”
Positive Parental Involvement
There are many things first-time school parents have to know and adjust to including the rules for the ‘drop-off’ and ‘pick-up’ lines. It’s vitally important to keep open communication with your child’s teacher. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, it will help your child’s teacher better understand your child and shows support for their education. Positive parental involvement creates an honest, caring system for both your child and their teacher. “One of our goals is to encourage parents,” said Cope. “Starting school can be overwhelming, but remember, you aren’t alone. As teachers, we are right there with you. We understand the huge responsibility of teaching your child and building their educational foundation. Since the start of the pandemic, our motto is Show up, we will figure it out together!” You can reach the McCracken County Board of Education at 270.538.4000 or visit McCracken.kyschools.us. Just Imagine® Childhood Cancer Walk By Cassie Johnson
I
n the United States, childhood cancer is the number one disease-related cause of death among children. According to the Kentucky State Cancer Registry Director Dr. Eric Durbin, our Commonwealth has the highest cancer rates out of any other state. Just imagine® if it was your child. Book for Hope, a local nonprofit organization, is hoping to end childhood cancer one step at a time.
Book for Hope (BFH) will hold its 7th Annual Just Imagine® Childhood Cancer Walk on September 10 at the McCracken County High School. This year’s theme is a Hawaiian-themed luau which will begin bright and early at 8am. There will be games, Zumba, a photo booth, DJ, food, and ice cream for everyone. Participants of all ages will gather to walk four miles. This distance symbolically represents the four percent of national cancer funding that trickles down to childhood cancer research. Book for Hope is a local grassroots organization on a mission to raise childhood cancer awareness. They help to support families that have a child enduring cancer treatment and donate to

childhood cancer research. They serve western Kentucky, southern Illinois, and a few counties in Tennessee. The Board of Directors and Officers all serve on a volunteer basis. Approximately 32 percent of BFH donations are designated for childhood cancer research, the rest is financial assistance to families. There are only four FDA-approved cancer treatments for children between newborn and 19 years old. The only other options are adult cancer treatments and clinical trials. Unfortunately for patients and their families this means traveling for life-saving cancer treatment becomes a way of life.
Vital Financial Assistance
“One way to raise childhood cancer awareness is by involving our community to help raise funds,” explained Gaylon Hayden, President of Book for Hope. “When we receive an application from the pediatric oncology social worker, BFH goes to work. We provide financial assistance in many ways including fuel and restaurant cards, as well as pre-paid Visa cards.”

Virtual participants can take the walk at their own pace until they hit the four-mile mark. Regardless of where you walk, everyone is encouraged to take selfies and post them on the Book for Hope social media pages. If you are unable to walk four miles, don’t worry! Plenty of chairs will be available to sit down and rest. Wheelchairs and strollers are welcome on the track so you can roll or walk. Nobody, especially a parent, wants to talk about cancer. Unfortunately, it affects nearly every household in America. While we would like to think it will never happen to us, cancer can strike anyone at any age in life. Please consider joining the fight to help families in our community survive and defeat childhood cancer. For questions about Book for Hope or the walk, contact Gaylon Hayden at 270.519.6536.
In most cases, after one parent has exhausted their 12 weeks of the Family Medical Family Leave Act (FMLA), they will lose their job,” Hayden told me. “Their child is sick or dying, and the bills keep piling up. Regardless of the location where the child receives treatment, household and medical bills still have to be paid. Book for Hope pays one bill every month for each family. It may be a utility bill, car payment, rent, car insurance, repairs, or any other need.”
Become A Sponsor!
Corporate sponsorships are needed to help make the walk possible. Sponsorship levels are $500, $1,000, $1,500, and $2,000. Primary sponsors will be featured on the front of the event t-shirts as well as receive public social media advertising. All sponsor names and logos will be on the back of the t-shirts. If your family or business is interested in becoming a T-Shirt Sponsor, call Gaylon Hayden at 270.519.6536.
Register to Walk
Register individually or as a team of 25 by visiting bookforhope.org and clicking on Events. You can also pay your registration fee online. The $30 fee includes a t-shirt, gift cards, drinks, free photos, and more. Please add $2 for size XXL and $3 for XXL t-shirts. Register by midnight on August 28 to ensure you receive a shirt. Registered teams will have their team name printed on the back of their shirts. Registration will be available on the morning of the walk, but you will not be guaranteed a t-shirt.
Virtual or In-person
Participants can walk virtually from anywhere in the United States and your t-shirt will be shipped to you for a small additional fee.

With the sky-high price of fuel and groceries, demand for supplies is rapidly increasing. The number of families asking for assistance has gone up every year, but 2022 is expected to see a serious jump in need. Many families have reduced incomes in 2021 and while many have now found employment they are still playing catch-up. With your help, the United Way plans to provide school supplies to approximately 1,400 students in Paducah-McCracken County this year. This includes all 18 public and private schools in the county. “We all know how critical it is to set our students up for success,” said United Way Community Impact Manager Anne Bidwell. “Someday soon, these children will become our co-workers, community leaders, and game-changers! You cannot learn and level up without the proper tools. Donating school supplies ensures every student has

what they need for the future they deserve.”

Unique As YOU Are By Cassie Johnson

et ready for a shopping experience like no other! Whether you’re looking for basics, business, intimates, athletics, or something fun, Joonie Glam has clothing to help all women feel comfortable with their appearance. Owner Kelly Mata and her staff provide exclusive attention to find the size and style that fits you. No need to worry if they have your size. You will find a large selection with sizes from petite to plus and every shape in between. “Finding the correct fit plays a critical role in our appearance and selfesteem,” owner Kelly Mata shares. “One customer came in asking for a 4X. I picked out several items for her to try on, and she only needed a 1X. For years, she had dressed in clothes that were too big and baggy for her body type. Her confidence level was instantly boosted and her self-esteem went through the roof!” A Chicago native, Kelly moved to Paducah 19 years ago. She comes from a long line of strong women and Kelly had an entrepreneur’s mindset from the start. Her Latina family heritage played an important role in her decision to start her business. In addition to the boutique, she also owns Kelly Mata & Sons Pressure Washing.
In 2019 Kelly became Grandma to Roxanna. Her granddaughter is the inspiration behind the boutique. Roxanna has a beautiful Persian and Latina background. In Persian culture, Joon means respect. Friends describe Kelly as a Glam-ma, and from those names, Joonie Glam Boutique was born. Kelly and Roxanna’s mission is to share their love of fashion while providing top-notch customer service with integrity and dignity. “I became a mom at 15 and my daughter changed my life,” explained Kelly. “Desiray, Christian, and Geovanni make me a proud mother of three. It’s all about family, and my granddaughter Roxanna and I are making memories neither of us will ever forget.” Handbags, jewelry, shoes, sunglasses, and hats add the finishing touch to every look. With a variety of tops and bottoms, you can mix and match your new wardrobe for every occasion. Specialty undergarments for women who have breast cancer and for those who have undergone reconstructive surgery will soon be arriving. Kelly is experienced in assisting customers during this process in a private and confidential setting. “It’s very meaningful to offer this service,” Kelly told me. “Surgeries and treatments are difficult, but finding the right shapewear doesn’t have to be.” Visit the store or shop online at joonieglam.com. COOKING WITH BRITT
Fire... Up the Grill By Britt Allgood
S
ummer is here and with it comes grilling season! I’m hoping by now you’ve done a ‘spring check-up’ on your grill and thorough cleaning. No telling what bugs and little critters have visited the grill over the winter! The type of grill you have will dictate your level of checkup required. Charcoal grills (traditional, hibachis, and the like) typically only require a thorough cleaning of the firebox. Remember to clean the grill surface and make sure the vents are working. Gas grills need a little more work. You will need to check the heat shields and burners, replace the striker battery and make sure your propane tank is full and turned on. A trip to your local hardware store may be in order but fortunately, a lot of the parts are generic. Once your grill is all set, it’s time to decide on your menu. I’ve grilled everything from pizza to peaches, steaks, pork chops, and fish. I even grilled an avocado once and it was honestly delicious. The trick is all in the prep and knowing the heat of your grill. Nothing beats the flavor of grilled foods and it gives me a chance to get outside and enjoy the weather. A bonus is grilling means I am not heating the kitchen range and consequently half the house. Grilling, especially on the weekend, is also a way to prepare meals for the rest of the week. While you have that grill hot, you might as well cook some chicken, burgers, or brats for a quick weeknight meal. You can also add a lot of flavor by marinating meats ahead of time. Veggies are a bit different. I like to lightly season mine with salt, pepper, or some fresh herbs such as rosemary - you can also add garlic. Remember, when preparing the veggies, cut them to the same

thickness so they cook evenly. Additionally, brush a little oil on your veggies so they don’t stick to the grilling surface. I recently tried a new recipe for grilled pork chops that I’m going to share today. I accompanied it with a delicious pearled barley salad that I made ahead of time and paired with grilled summer veggies. Hope you have a great summer and a successful grill season. Live, laugh, love, and eat well!
Pearled Barley Salad with Apples, Pomegranate Seeds, & Pine Nuts 1/3 cup pine nuts (about 3 oz) ¼ cup plus 2 TBSP extra virgin olive oil 3 TBSP White Wine Vinegar 1 small shallot, minced (can substitute red onion but it is much stronger in flavor)
Easy Grilled Pork Chops Courtesy of Sunny Anderson on Cooking for Real
Salt and pepper
Serves 4
4 cups thyme-scented pearled barley (see note below), cooled
15 minutes active time; 1-hour inactive time (marinating)
1 large tart apple like Honeycrisp, cored and cut into ½ inch pieces
Ingredients: ¼ cup honey 2 TBSP vegetable or olive oil 1 TBSP apple cider vinegar 1 tsp ground cumin ½ tsp red pepper flakes 8 – ½ inch thick bone-in pork chops about 3oz each Salt and freshly ground black pepper Prepare the marinade by whisking together the honey, oil, vinegar, cumin, and red pepper flakes. Season the chops on both sides with a sprinkle of salt and freshly ground black pepper and place in a re-sealable plastic bag with the marinade. Let rest on the counter for one hour. Heat a grill or grill pan over medium heat. Remove the chops from the bag and place them on the heated grill. Cook for about four minutes or until the chop is released from the grill. Flip and cook for about another three minutes. If cooking in a grill pan, cook in batches – do not overcrowd your pan and steam the chops. If you want to give them a little extra zing, lightly sprinkle with fresh lemon juice and enjoy.

½ cup pomegranate seeds (about ½ of a large pomegranate) ½ cup chopped flat-leaf parsley Preheat the oven to 350°F while the barley is cooking. Place the pine nuts on a cookie sheet and roast in the oven for about five to six minutes, then allow them to cool.
always have fresh thyme so will add dried thyme to the water and leave it in the salad. It’s better to make this ahead and allow it to cool before making the salad.
In a bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, and a shallot. Season with salt and pepper. Add the remaining ingredients and toss them together. This dish can be made a day ahead and refrigerated. Allow warming to room temperature before serving. Note: Pearled barley cooks similar to rice and other grains. It requires about 1 cup barley to 2 cups water and yields 2 cups cooked. I don’t

The Tennessee RiverLine

local leaders collaborate to connect communities along the 652 miles of the Tennessee River. The idea came from a student project at the University of Tennessee. A professor offered a studio course that explored local landscapes, water resource stewardship, and how those resources affected communities located along the river. Students surveyed the Tennessee River from Knoxville, Tennessee to Paducah. Their research showed that the majority of residents were disconnected from the river. Students developed ideas to reconnect communities to the waterway through kayaking, hiking, biking, and camping opportunities.

A Great Idea Takes Shape
The project gained support from local government officials and the National Parks Service Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program. In 2019 the RiverLine launched the Pilot Community program designed to provide insight into the communities along the river including their residents and leaders. Paducah-McCracken County was one of the five cities selected as a “Pilot Community”. In. 2021, they received the RiverLine’s Excellence In River Animation Award. This award describes activities that help people engage with the river. It also recognizes the community’s commitment to

providing access to river spaces and experiences through innovative and safe programs. Investments in the river and local trails stimulate our economy and businesses. Tourism is a treasure here in western Kentucky, bringing in large amounts of money to the community. “I was thrilled that Paducah-McCracken County received this award,” said Julie Harris, Executive Director of the River Discovery Center and chair of the local leadership team for the RiverTowns Program. “It recognized the local Leadership Team’s hard work to host four paddle events in our first year of participation in the RiverTowns program.”
Paddle the River
One of the most popular activities on the river is paddling. They hosted four events last year and plan five for 2022. “Paducah’s requirement to be in the program is to host one event annually, but the team felt strongly that our community deserved more opportunities to paddle than once per season,” said Harris. Paducah-McCracken County hosted four community paddling events in 2021. These included a collaboration with the Oscar Cross Boys & Girls Club of Paducah that included a training session at Noble Park Pool. This year we look forward to hosting five events providing more opportunities for the area’s residents to get connected with our rivers.”
If you’re looking for a fun weekend getaway visit an extended section of the trail. Adventurers can discover where the river reaches and those unique, hidden destinations where access was previously limited. Recreation enthusiasts come from all around the world to complete the long-distance trail. Locals and travelers alike can see wonders such as the Cumberland Trail and Natchez Trace.
Let’s Get Out There!
The Tennessee RiverLine is much more than a recreational trail. It is a strategic investment in economic, social, and environmental infrastructure that has the potential to transform communities and the river landscape in our region. The success of the Tennessee RiverLine is only possible through community support and participation. Visit tnriverline.org for the latest information and to subscribe to their free newsletter. Join the adventure on social media.
The free paddling events planned for 2022 will take place on June 18, July 16, August 20, September 17, and October 15. Community members are encouraged to participate in these recreational and educational river paddling opportunities. For information regarding registration for paddle events, check out the Facebook page Tennessee RiverLine: Paducah -McCracken County.
Trails for Everyone
Everyone from adventure enthusiasts to casual bike riders can enjoy the Tennessee RiverLine trails. Locally, residents use the Greenway Trail as a part of their daily exercise routine. The accessibility for pedestrians supports multiple lifestyle amenities such as improving mobility, socialization, and increased physical exercise.
