Paradise Village Singles - January

The frigid winter evening of Jan 5th, 2015 was warmed up at the home of Olga Baschak where 16 hungry folks enjoyed their get-together. As usual the food was sensational with some original dishes such as Sushi Rolls. (Thanks Lynn, what a nice treat) Also Olga served a special beet–horseradish relish that was very flavourful.

The highlight of the evening was a trio of birthdays. We celebrated with Vida, Ron, and Doreen. and indulged in a Bacardi Rum Cake made by Joy and a Black Forest Cake made by Olga. Somehow, calories didn't matter on this occasion!

We also bid farewell to Val Mallen as she is moving to Steinbach this week. She is a special lady and the entire village will miss her and the many social events that she organized. Of course as an alumnus she is encouraged to return to our singles group often. We love you Val and wish you a happy new home! Our next fun event will be held: Monday, Feb 02, 5:30 pm at the home of Vida Bowyer 16 Nature Dr. All singles please plan to be there. (and yes, there are men who attend!) You only have to contribute a dish of some sort .. home made or store bought. You will be most welcome and will have great meal.

Additions or Changes to PVRA telephone and address book… If there are any additions or changes that you wish to have published please either email to pvra20@yahoo.ca or phone Debbie at 204-422-8714 According to a news report, a certain private Catholic school was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine provided it was of a natural or neutral skin tone, but after they put on their lipstick, they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night the custodian would remove them; and the next day the girls would put them back. Finally, the principal, Sister Mary, decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the custodian. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian, who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little princesses!) To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, Sister Mary asked the custodian to show the girls how much effort was required, and how he cleaned off the lipstick marks every night. He proceeded to take out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet bowl, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.

There are teachers...... and then there are educators! If Sister Mary ran for office, I would vote for her! Don't mess with a nun, they are holy spirit smart!!!

February 2014 The month of January 2015 could be said to have multiple personalities. Dave Phillips, Senior Climatologist with Environment Canada explains this is because the first two weeks of January saw temperatures around -30 while now they are hovering around the freezing mark. Phillips notes it's been very different when compared to last years' recording breaking winter. "Just one statistic to compare is the number of days below -30. This year we've probably had about seven of those suckers and some of them were in November. Last year at this time there were 18 of them and some of them were close to -38 or -39. I'm not talking about the windchill, I'm talking about the honest temperature as observed by thermometers." Phillips adds even though it's hard to say for sure in January, it appears the threat of a flood is doubtful. Also, Phillips notes the models suggest Spring is going to be better than last year's Spring where temperatures made it feel like it was still winter.

On Saturday the 24th of January I was wondering what my cat was so intently looking at through the window when I noticed a vole slip out from under the snow to retrieve some bread crumbs that I had thrown out for the birds. It then donned on me that there must be a load of tunnels under the snow. WOW! Voles look like house mice, but have a shorter tail, a rounded muzzle and head, and small ears. Like all rodents, voles have a single pair of large chisel-like incisors in their upper jaw that continue to grow as the tips wear away. The vole has a dark brown coat with a greyish belly that turns white in the winter. In contrast, the house mouse is uniformly grey. Voles search for green plants and seeds during the day or night, and in winter, they travel in tunnels beneath the insulating snow, making round holes in the snow when coming up to the surface. I never knew this. Nature is so cool! Debbie Kokil - 5 Parkview Drive 9

Specials Available for Paradise Village Residents

Happy New Years2015 to those of us who still remember dates! Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven't met yet! I don't trip over things, I do random gravity checks! Old age is coming at a really bad time! When I was a child I thought Nap Time was a punishment ... now, as a grown up, it just feels like a small vacation! The biggest lie I tell myself is ... "I don't need to write that down, I'll remember it." Lord grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the friends to post my bail when I finally snap! I don't have gray hair. I have "wisdom highlights". I'm just very wise. My people skills are just fine. It's my tolerance to idiots that needs work. Teach your daughter how to shoot, because a restraining order is just a piece of paper. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would've put them on my knees. The kids text me "plz" which is shorter than please. I text back "no" which is shorter than "yes". I'm going to retire and live off of my savings. Not sure what I'll do that second week. I've lost my mind and I'm pretty sure my kids took it! Even duct tape can't fix stupid ... but it can muffle the sound! Why do I have to press one for English when you're just gonna transfer me to someone I can't understand anyway? Lord, Give me patience and give it to me NOW. Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert advice. At my age "Getting lucky" means walking into a room and remembering what I came in there for. Wouldn't it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes; come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller! Life is too short: drink the good wine first! 14

Excerpts from a Dog’s Diary….

Excerpts from a Cat’s Diary….

Day 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly 8:00 am - Oh boy! Dog food! My favorite! on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. 9:30 am - Oh boy! A car ride! My favorite! The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of 9:40 am - Oh boy! A walk! My favorite! escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining 10:30 am - Oh boy! A car ride! My favorite! the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another house plant. 1:00 pm - Oh boy! The yard! My favorite! 5:00 pm - Oh boy! The kids! My favorite! Day 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by 5:30 pm - Oh boy! Mom! My favorite! weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile Day number 181 oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on 8:00 am - Oh boy! Dog food! My favorite! their favorite chair...must try on their bed. 9:30 am - Oh boy! A car ride! My favorite! Day 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the 9:40 am - Oh boy! A walk! My favorite! headless body, in attempt to make them aware of 10:30 am - Oh boy! A car ride! My favorite! what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their 1:00 pm - Oh boy! The yard! My favorite! hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was...Hmmmm. Not working 5:00 pm - Oh boy! The kids! My favorite! according to plan. 5:30 pm - Oh boy! Mom! My favorite! Day number 180

Day number 182 8:00 am - Oh boy! Dog food! My favorite! 9:30 am - Oh boy! A car ride! My favorite! 9:40 am - Oh boy! A walk! My favorite! 10:30 am - Oh boy! A car ride! My favorite! 1:00 pm - Oh boy! Day 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called “shampoo.” What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth. Day 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit.

February 2015 An old man was sitting on a park bench crying. I asked him, “Why are you crying?” He told me “I am married to a young beautiful woman that means everything to me.” But he just kept sobbing uncontrollably. He continued, “We make passionate love every day!” I said, “Then why are you crying?” He said, “Because I for forgot where I live!”

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Submitted by Paradise Village Resident, Barb Prior

Osteoporosis is the condition when the bones become increasingly porous leading to the risk of fractures especially of the wrists, hips or spinal vertebrae (stooped posture or dowagers hump.) This condition affects both women and men. Approximately 50% of postmenopausal women are at risk and about 20% of men over the age of 60 years. Bone density begins to reduce for everyone after it peaks in our late 20's. By the age of 35 years our bones become gradually weaker. Osteoporosis occurs when there is an imbalance between new bone formation and old bone re-absorption. Calcium is essential for proper function of the heart, brain and other organs. The body re-absorbs calcium that is stored in the bones to maintain adequate calcium levels in the blood. If your calcium intake is not sufficient bone production and bone tissue may suffer resulting in weaker brittle bones. If this bone loss occurs over an extended period of many years it can result in serious damage to bone health.

Risk factors that cannot be modified: Age Race (Caucasians and Asians are at greater risk) Small bone structure Family history of osteoporosis

Risk factors that can be modified: Inactivity or immobility Reduced Calcium and Vitamin D intake Smoking Excessive alcohol intake Eating disorders (anorexia and/or bulimia) Reduced estrogen production

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Since bone loss is gradual over many years there are no signs or symptoms in the early stages. After many years of bone loss there may be dull pain in the bones and muscles particularly low back pain or neck pain. Most people become aware that they have osteoporosis when they experience a fracture after a minor fall. A slip or strain or even a violent cough or sneeze may result in a fracture.

TREATMENT AND PREVENTION The risk of a fracture can be lowered with lifestyle changes along with dietary and/or supplements to prevent bone loss  

Women over 50 and men over 70 require 1000-1200mg of calcium a day Vitamin D - the sunshine vitamin is needed to increase bone mass. In this northern climate we do not get enough from the sun. Foods containing Vitamin D include: fortified milk, egg yolks, saltwater fish, and liver.

The daily recommended dose of Vitamin D for both women and men over the age of 60 years is 800-1200mg/day.   

Quit smoking. Drink alcohol in moderation. (Poor nutrition and increased risk of falls are factors here) Exercise - weight-bearing exercises or simply walking promotes healthy bones and strengthens the muscles to support our bones and reduces the risk of falls.

If you suspect you may be at risk of osteoporosis consult your doctor for further evaluation and treatment. 21

I would be willing to do this overnight trip every second month if that would be your wish. 2015 Back by popular demand IF there is enough interest! The last two years have been awesome! Folklorama 2015 is requesting confirmation of trips already so I need to know how many people are interested in

attending. I do have a list of people who called some time ago and indicated interest but I need quite a few more to make it work. We are able to keep the cost the same as last year and anyone who has gone in the past will tell you it is a real bargain. I will plan for one trip only at this time and only consider both weeks if there is a lot of interest shown. As in the past, I will need commitments early. If you are not sure if you are on my list, call! The dates I have in mind are: Week 1 – Tuesday, Aug 4th /Wednesday, August 5th Week 2 – Tuesday, Aug 11th /Wednesday, Aug 12th For those not familiar with the trip I am adding a sample of what the trip is like: Day one - Casino bus pickup at Steinbach @ 8:30 am - Ste Anne @ 8:40 - Paradise Village @ 9:00 am - Arrive @ McPhillips Street Station in the morning @ 10:00 am - arrive at Club Regent 2:30 pm and book in at the Canad Inn - Early evening - arrive at 1st pavilion for an appetizer, drink and show - After the show, bus will take us to second pavilion for dinner, drink and the show there - Finally, our bus will take us to a third pavilion for dessert, drink and their performance - When the evening is over, our bus will take us back to Canad Inn at Club Regent for our overnight stay. Your time is your own to do as you please until check out time the following day. Day two -enjoy Club Regent (or do whatever you wish) before leaving for the trip home at 2:00 pm * Pavilions will be the choice of organizers (because of timing). Paradise Squares There is no report for this month, Larry Trush So, I have found some history on Square Dancing for your reading pleasure, Debbie Kokil, Editor Square dance is a dance for four couples (eight dancers) arranged in a square, with one couple on each side, facing the middle of the square. Square dances were first documented in 17th-century England but were also quite common in France and throughout Europe. They came to North America with the European settlers and have undergone considerable development there. In some countries and regions, through preservation and repetition, square dances have attained the status of a folk dance. Traditional square dance, which is also called "old time square dance". Traditional square dance is not standardized and can be subdivided into regional styles. The New England and Appalachian styles have been particularly well documented; both have survived to the present time. There are several other styles; some have survived or been revived in recent years, some have not. Traditional square dance is frequently presented in alternation with contra dances (particularly in revival groups) or with some form of freestyle couple dancing (at surviving local events). One ancestor of New England style square dances is the quadrille, and older New England callers occasionally refer to their squares as “quadrilles. Where traditional square dance has been revived, it encompasses a wide range of new choreography. Modern Western square dance (MWSD), which is also called "Western square dance", "contemporary Western square dance", or "modern American square dance". Modern Western square dance evolved from the Western style of traditional square dance from about 1940 to 1960. Traditional Western square dancing was promoted beginning in the 1930s by Lloyd Shaw, who solicited definitions from callers across the country in order to preserve that dance form and make it available to other teachers. Since the 1970s modern Western square dance has been promoted and standardized by Callerlab, the "International Association of Square Dance Callers". Because of this standardization, it is possible for anyone with the proper training to enjoy Modern Western square dancing in many countries around the world; although instruction is typically given in the local language, the calls are always in English. Modern Western square dance is sometimes presented in alternation with round dances.

Joan Adolphe (nee KASZOWSKI) Born: December 28, 1934 Died: January 2, 2015

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Joan Adolph (nee Kaszowski) on January 2, 2015. She will be dearly missed by her family: Ron, Brian (Tammy) and Allan (Cheryl). Grandma Joan's grandchildren: Kira, Tianna, Sam, Ben, Justin and Jamie and her great- grandchildren Jayde and Rylan meant the world to her. She was their #1 fan in everything they did. Joan was predeceased by her husband Roger and her parents Anton and Helen Kaszowski.

She was born and raised in Beausejour, MB. After she and Roger were married, they lived in Beausejour, MB and Lethbridge, AB and settled in Thompson, MB where they raised their three boys. At the time of her passing, Joan was living in Ste. Anne, MB. Joan often spent weekends with Brian and Tammy and she loved being surrounded by her grandchildren. She taught Sam how to iron his Air Cadets uniform and Jayde looked forward to GJ's piano lessons. Ben made her laugh with his intellectual goofiness. GJ and Rylan loved to put a puzzle together. She was so proud to see Jamie graduate from college and having Justin with her for what would be her last Christmas. She looked forward to Allan and Cheryl's visits every summer and her road trips with Ron. Grandma's fridge proudly displayed Tianna's drawings and she always loved to bake with Kira. Joan was very involved with the church throughout her life. She was a member of the Catholic Women's League and played the organ regularly for mass. A celebration of Joan's life was held at Ste. Anne Roman Catholic Church, 162 Centrale Avenue, Ste. Anne, MB., on Friday, January 9, 2015, beginning at 1:30 p.m., followed by Mass at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Florida Calling: Taking time out to wish all the gang in “Paradise” a Happy Valentine’s Day.

The big news here this month is the $1.82/US gallon for gasoline at the pump in Tampa, and may go lower, so we’re churning out the miles and visiting more interesting events and locations. We also spent time at the Tampa Fairgrounds reviewing the new Vietnam Veterans Memorial travelling exhibit from Washington which honors the 58,939 American men and women missing or killed in action. Visited Busch Gardens with the Archambaults and got drenched at the wild river ride. What Fun! The cooler winter here, thanks to Canadian weather, is loosening it’s grip and temps finally rising. Now we can concentrate on our “golden glow” suntans again. Looks like another huge sweet strawberry season is about to begin and the Kumquat Festival is our next objective. Almost missing y’all back home but not in a mood to come home. Hugs from Ila and Brian Cooper.

$.55 a litre I believe….

Kumquats are the size of large olives and have sweet skin with slightly bitter flesh. They can be eaten whole, skin and all, and you can also buy them bottled in syrup.

These run on how many times you won a game not totally on the score.

My New Exercise Routine!

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags. Then try 50-lb potato bags and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute (I'm at this level). After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.

Pharmacie Seine Ste-Anne 204-422-8226 170-142 avenue Central High Cholesterol Cholesterol is a waxy substance that's found in the fats (lipids) in your blood. While your body needs cholesterol to continue building healthy cells, having high cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease. When you have high cholesterol, you may develop fatty deposits in your blood vessels. Eventually, these deposits make it difficult for enough blood to flow through your arteries. Your heart may not get as much oxygen-rich blood as it needs, which increases the risk of a heart attack. Decreased blood flow to your brain can cause a stroke. High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) can be inherited, but it's often the result of unhealthy lifestyle choices, and thus preventable and treatable. A healthy diet, regular exercise and sometimes medication can go a long way toward reducing high cholesterol. High cholesterol has no symptoms. A blood test is the only way to detect high cholesterol.

When to see a doctor Ask your doctor for a baseline cholesterol test at age 20 and then have your cholesterol retested at least every five years. If your test results aren't within desirable ranges, your doctor may recommend more frequent measurements. Your doctor may also suggest you have more frequent tests if you have a family history of high cholesterol, heart disease or other risk factors, such as smoking, diabetes or high blood pressure. Lifestyle changes are essential to improve your cholesterol level. To bring your numbers down, lose excess weight, eat healthy foods and increase your physical activity. If you smoke, quit.

Lose extra pounds Excess weight contributes to high cholesterol. Losing even 5 to 10 pounds can help lower total cholesterol levels. Start by taking an honest look at your eating habits and daily routine. Consider your challenges to weight loss — and ways to overcome them. Set long-term, sustainable goals.

Eat heart-healthy foods What you eat has a direct impact on your cholesterol level. In fact, a diet rich in fiber and other cholesterol-lowering foods may help lower cholesterol as much as statin medication for some people. •Choose healthier fats. Saturated fat and trans fat raise your total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Get no more than 10 percent of your daily calories from saturated fat. Monounsaturated fat — found in olive, peanut and canola oils — is a healthier option. Almonds and walnuts are other sources of healthy fat. 32

High Cholesterol Continued...

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

•Eliminate trans fats. Trans fats, which are often found in margarines and commercially baked cookies, crackers and snack cakes, are particularly bad for your cholesterol levels. Not only do trans fats increase your total LDL ("bad") cholesterol, but they also lower your HDL ("good") cholesterol. You may have noticed more food labels now market their products as "trans fat-free." But don't rely only on this label. In the United States, if a food contains less than 0.5 grams of trans fat a serving, it can be marked trans fat-free. It may not seem like much, but if you eat a lot of foods with a small amount of trans fat, it can add up quickly. Instead, read the ingredients list. If a food contains a partially hydrogenated oil, that's a trans fat, and you should look for an alternative. •Limit your dietary cholesterol. Aim for no more than 300 milligrams (mg) of cholesterol a day — or less than 200 mg if you have heart disease. The most concentrated sources of cholesterol include organ meats, egg yolks and whole milk products. Use lean cuts of meat, egg substitutes and skim milk instead. •Select whole grains. Various nutrients found in whole grains promote heart health. Choose whole-grain breads, whole-wheat pasta, whole-wheat flour and brown rice. Oatmeal and oat bran are other good choices. •Stock up on fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are rich in dietary fiber, which can help lower cholesterol. Snack on seasonal fruits. Experiment with vegetable-based casseroles, soups and stir-fries. •Eat heart-healthy fish. Some types of fish — such as cod, tuna and halibut — have less total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol than do meat and poultry. Salmon, mackerel and herring are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help promote heart health. •Drink alcohol only in moderation. Moderate use of alcohol may increase your levels of HDL cholesterol — but the benefits aren't strong enough to recommend alcohol for anyone who doesn't drink already. If you choose to drink, do so in moderation. This means no more than one drink a day for women and one to two drinks a day for men.

Exercise regularly Regular exercise can help improve your cholesterol levels. With your doctor's OK, work up to 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day. Take a brisk daily walk. Ride your bike. Swim laps. To maintain your motivation, keep it fun. Find an exercise buddy or join an exercise group. And, you don't need to get all 30 to 60 minutes in one exercise session. If you can squeeze in three to six 10-minute intervals of exercise, you'll still get some cholesterol-lowering benefits.

Don't smoke If you smoke, stop. Quitting can improve your HDL cholesterol level. And the benefits don't end there. Just 20 minutes after quitting, your blood pressure decreases. Within 24 hours, your risk of a heart attack decreases. Within one year, your risk of heart disease is half that of a smoker's. Within 15 years, your risk of heart disease is similar to that of someone who's never smoked.

A reminder that we offer free delivery of prescriptions and pharmacy supplies to Paradise Village. 33

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Four old retired men are walking down a street in Lakeland, Florida. They turn a corner and see a sign that says, "Old Timers Bar - ALL drinks 10 cents." They look at each other and then go in, thinking this is too good to be true. The old bartender says in a voice that carries across the room, "Come on in and let me pour one for you! What'll it be, gentlemen?" There's a fully stocked bar, so each of the men orders a martini. In no time the bartender serves up four iced martinis shaken, not stirred and says, "That'll be 10 cents each, please." The four guys stare at the bartender for a moment, then at each other. They can't believe their good luck. They pay the 40 cents, finish their martinis, and order another round. Again, four excellent martinis are produced, with the bartender again saying, “That’s 40 cents, please." They pay the 40 cents, but their curiosity gets the better of them. They've each had two martinis and haven't even spent a dollar yet. Finally one of them says, "How can you afford to serve martinis as good as these for a dime a piece?" "I'm a retired tailor from Orlando," the bartender says, "and I always wanted to own a bar. Last year I hit the Lottery Jackpot for $125 million and decided to open this place. Every drink costs a dime. Wine, liquor, beer it's all the same." "Wow! That's some story!" one of the men says. As the four of them sip at their martinis, they can't help noticing seven other people at the end of the bar who don't have any drinks in front of them and haven't ordered anything the whole time they've been there. Nodding at the seven at the end of the bar, one of the men asks the Bartender, "What's with them?" The bartender says, “They’re retired people from CANADA. They’re waiting for Happy Hour when drinks are half-price, plus they have coupons..."
