Teddy’s favourite person is Jim. His favourite snack is a peanut butter dog bone and his favourite activity is riding on Jim’s scooter around Paradise Village, visiting with as many people as possible. Last, but not least, Teddy loves to watch the Winnipeg Jets. Submitted by Jim L’Esperance

Newsletter by Email Delivery Option Several residents have signed up to receive the colour pdf of the newsletter by email. 2 have opted out of receiving a hard copy, but there is no pressure on anyone to choose this. A Black & White newsletter will always be available for delivery to your home!. We know that there are residents that don’t have computers, aren’t in love with technology and some just really prefer paper copy. You receive an email with a link to the newsletter on Google Drive. From there you can either read it, or download it. Once you download it you can choose to print it all, or print select pages, i.e. the Calendar. If you would like to try out email delivery please email pvranews55@gmail.com. You will still receive the printed B&W version delivered to your home until you decide which option you prefer. There is already the option to view the colour version on issuu.com (search PVRA). The nice thing about issuu.com is the archives of newsletters going back to 2014.You can sign up for a free account which will save your search as your home page, or you can just go to the site and search every time you want to view it. At issuu.com you can enjoy reading the newsletter in colour, but you can’t download it (although I have found I can screen shot the pages on my iPad and print them from there). PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
P resident ’ s M essage Greetings to all...my goodness... where did July go to? Seems only yesterday we were all celebrating Canada Day... and a fine celebration it was here in Paradise Village. Management served up a hearty breakfast/brunch to get everyone in fine tune for the day. Thanks to Jill, Justin and family for this fine feast. We were fortunate to have the best weather for the day’s activities at the recreation centre grounds. Your P.V.R.A. provided great entertainment with the live band (Fire & Ice). While some enjoyed dancing, others were busy trying their luck with bean bag/cornhole and yard Yahtzee. Sort of like a kids’ picnic in the park... only better. We got to visit with friends and also met some folks new to the park. The highlight was of course the pulled pork dinner... our thanks to the Social Committee for the planning and execution of this event. Great job everyone. We trust everyone is enjoying this great summer
we are having... whether it be here in the park with having folks come to visit, or off to visit friends/relatives at a nearby lake, off to Ontario, or maybe even Saskatchewan!! Take a ride around the “village” just to absorb the beautiful yards and gardens our residents have put so much work into. We truly hope Management is proud of the residents for their effort in providing such a beautiful landscape for everyone to enjoy, and to entice new buyers to move into the Village...not that anyone wants to leave, but perhaps circumstances dictate otherwise. We all strive to keep P.V. the safest, friendliest, attractive and cost-effective place in which to reside in our senior years. Seems the seniors are getting younger and younger, which is great, as it keeps us all young and vibrant. Safety has been on the forefront, both with the “break-in/assault incident in May with the intrusive and harmful experience for a “senior” resi-

dent”.... as well as day to day “speeding” within the park. It cannot be stressed enough that we all need to be vigilant innavigating throughout the park... remember.... some of us may be wearing hearing aids, walking with assistive devices or just enjoying the day... please SLOW DOWN. Slowing down also decreases the dust which is such a problem for those suffering from asthma or other health problems. We are thankful to Management for the recycled asphalt which was placed around the park to help with the bumpy road conditions, but it truly keeps the dust down. Past President LudwikJarco has addressed security within the park to P.V. Management and Owner in written documentation with suggestions from our residents at our General Meeting held in May. He has put forth our willingness to meet and discuss safety issues/concerns to keep the park safe from any future incidents. To this point no response
has been forthcoming for such a meeting with management/owner. We will pursue this issue at great length, as well as suggestions for a “C.O.P.P.” Citizens on Patrol group. We all need to be aware and concerned.... in a recent discussion with a neighbour (neighbor) we have the privilege of knowing in Weslaco, Texas... she says that the folks were advised to keep “hornet/wasp spray” on your ready.... and also, keep your car keys on your bedside table so in the event of a nighttime occurrence, you can press the PANIC button. Whatever works....be safe, and check on your neighbours. So.... enjoy the rest of this great newsletter to which many of our residents have contributed.... enjoy the warmth and sunshine we have been blessed with.... and keep in mind...”Duct Tape is to men as wine is to women”... it fixes everything.” Regards, Rob Freeman, President P.V.R.A.

W ords This month’s newsletter has been a labour of love by many of our residents. A big thank you to our fabulous residents that have taken their time to research, interview, photograph and write the content and articles for this newsletter. I know there was a lot of time and effort put in by each of you and it is appreciated. Frank Leys had wanted me to include an article on Poison Ivy this month. Unfortunately, it is a
from the E ditor
copyrighted article and I have not yet received permission from the publisher to reprint it. It can be seen on the internet and he has shared it on our Facebook group. I encourage all residents to join our Facebook group. It is a private group for residents only so nothing is shared publicly. There is a lot of interesting content posted by residents. As August is now upon us it is hard not to notice the beautiful yards and gardens in Paradise Vil-
lage. We have some truly talented gardeners living in our Village! I have absolutely no green in my thumbs at all, so I love admiring the results of everyone’s hard work. August is going to be another busy month in the Village. Along with all our regular activities we have a few events to look forward to, another great Happy Hour, our Annual Corn Roast and of course, the Car Show! I hope everyone that owns either a unique car
or a classic car participates and shows off their cars! Our resident car buffs work tirelessly on their ‘babies’. Let’s get out and give them the admiration they deserve. Everyone is welcome to attend the Newsletter Committee meetings. I look forward to seeing you at the next one, August 8, 1pm at my home. Until next month, Happy Reading! Haze Werner

Letter to the Editor Re: PVRA On line Newsletter So apparently I was the first to sign up for the email version of the PVRA monthly newsletter electronically. I told the editor I would write a review of my opinion of the new electronic format. I always open my mouth and stuff comes out that really I have no knowledge or expertise in? So that being said here goes my review; I, since Oct 2017 when I moved in, have felt this park is special, I researched places to live for almost four years prior to my retirement and purposely chose Paradise Village, I do believe it is named appropriately! I have found the Village to be friendly helpful and just a darn nice place to be, part of the beauty is the care of the Village by management
July 13 2019
and staff slightly biased by the fact I mow lawns and remove branches etc…. LOL. Seriously it is a special place and what makes it truly special is the people that I call my neighbours and residents. The PVRA is a group of dedicated individuals who spend many volunteer hours to help make this Village a place to enjoy in many fashions, too many for me to expand on. Let’s just say for the $12.50 a year(less than a big mac meal almost) you get more than your monies worth for sure. I hope the newer residents get to read this if you know of some and there are many recently feel free to share the news. On to my point I do tend to ramble or as my son
says “old man yelling at the clouds!” I find the residents of the village an ecological minded folk who do think of the environment of our area as important to maintain and protect, I see examples of this every day around the Village. Well, all I can say is that if you own a computer or a smart phone you can access the Monthly newsletter at your fingertips whenever you want and as many times as you want, archive it and print off individual pages easily (example the monthly calendar back page). Thereby saving many, many trees! I will not insult you all by saying how many as I have no expertise in this area! All I know is that we have almost 200 members (I’m guessing) and that would take a lot of paper to produce 40 to 50 pages per magazine every month! If that wasn’t enough of a reason I don’t know what is? I do know that the quality of the pictures are much better, clearer and in colour. I find the print easier to read as I can control via my computer how large to make the print. So my friends and neighbours that is at least three great reasons to switch. This is not about saving money although the money saved could be put to use in other PVRA improvements around our Village for sure! Another major issue is the Co-ordination of the volunteers for delivery and help the poor volunteer delivery people who donate
many hours in all kinds of weather to bring you this written word it would lessen the burden of so many. I have not really been able to find a reason to not switch to electronic format? That being said I would honestly love to hear from folks especially if you don’t agree and if you don’t please be specific in your reasons however I believe if you are to really sit down and think about how easy this format is and how much of a benefit to the Village and the PVRA you will agree this is the future and we should not fear it. If you would like to get it and delete your delivery it was as easy as sending the editor a note (Haze Werner) pvranews55@gmail.com. I have not personally checked out this option but Haze says you can access past issues back to 2014 for you folks that have been around for a while. I have a saying I have adopted over the past number of years that I believe in and the saying is “Only the truth!” I save it for when I mean it and in this case everything I have said in this review is “Only the truth!” Thank you all for taking the time out to read this and I hope you support the view and move into the future and help our planet and fellow residents. Just the way I see it! Sincerely, Ken Shaw, PVRA member and resident

DESCHAUER FAMILY BRUNCH KICKSTARTS CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS Like clockwork, the spirit of teamwork and friendship took hold early on July 1st at the Rec Centre as Jill, Justin, and family members, worked side by side with resident volunteers to serve up a mouth watering feast of fluffy pancakes and sausages with all the trim-
mings. Can anyone really say they left the building hungry? Loudly proclaiming our Canadian patriotism and standing proudly at attention, the singing of O Canada reverberated across the auditorium, and set the tone for the successful events that
followed. This year’s brunch was particularly well organized with a skillful presentation and attention to detail. It was a joy to see so many new residents mingle and share the fun with the more seasoned park veterans, management, and their families.
Kudos to the approximately 140 residents in attendance, all the busy volunteers, and the Deschauer family who spearheaded this much appreciated event. It just shows we all can work and play together harmoniously in Paradise Village. By Brian Cooper

CANADA DAY IN PARADISE GROWING EVERY YEAR Our PVRA Canada Day Celebrations are like Christmas. It only happens once each year. But boy do we know how to throw a party! No room here for grouches or complainers. But if you’re in the mood to laugh and let the good times roll... just pack your
deck chairs and munchies...and just show up. For 10 bucks any resident can buy into a Danny’s Whole Hog finger lickin’ BBQ dinner and dessert, relax in the shade of an umbrella with your cool brew to keep you company, dance on the patio to the Fire and Ice band, tag
along with a conga line of carefree retirees letting it all hang out, or sharing fun in the sun playing sociable lawn games. Even volunteering as a server doling out appetizers and hot food brings you face to face with new friends in every direction you look. That’s just for starters.
Even jovial Mel Holmes became a happier man by winning $257.50 in the 50/50 draw. Quite a remarkable and memorable day, wasn’t it? We all owned a piece of it. Next PVRA event is the annual corn roast on August 22nd. by Brian Cooper

Joke Du Jour Jokes from Iris Langlois Once upon a Time a handsome honeybee Fell in Love with a butterfly he met in a tulip tree. He said, “I love you madly and want to share your life, “let’s fly away together, “Will you be my wife?” She shook her head in sorrow, “No, no, no,” she cried. For I’m a monarch’s daughter “and you’re just a son of a bee.” A cop was on his horse waiting to cross the street when a little girl on her new shiny bike stopped beside him. “Nice bike,” the cop said. “Did Santa bring it to you?” “Yep,” said the little girl, “he sure did!” The cop looked the bike over and handed the girl a $5 ticket for a safety violation And said “Next year tell Santa to put a reflector on the back of it.” The young girl looked up at the cop and said, “Nice horse you’ve got there sir. Did Santa bring it to you?” “Yes, he sure did,” chuckled the cop. The little girl looked up a the cop and said “Next year tell Santa the dick goes underneath the horse, not on top.”

The Funny Bone A woman from New York was driving through a remote part of Arizona when her car broke down. An American Indian on horseback came along and offered her a ride to a nearby town. She climbed up behind him on the horse and they rode off. The ride was uneventful, except that every few minutes the Indian would let out a Ye-e-e-e-h-a-a-a-a!’ so loud that it echoed from the surrounding hills and canyon walls. When they arrived in town, he let her off at the local service station, yelled one final ‘Ye-e-e-e-h-a-a-a-a!’ and rode off. “What did you do to get that Indian so excited?” asked the service-station attendant. “Nothing,” the woman answered “I merely sat behind him on the horse, put my arms around his waist, and held onto the saddle horn so I wouldn’t fall off.” “Lady,” the attendant said, “Indians don’t use saddles.”

Why Did I Get Divorced? Well, last week was my birthday and my wife didn’t wish me a happy birthday in the morning before I went to work. My parents forgot too and so did my kids. I got into work and even my colleagues didn’t wish me a happy birthday. I was really sad because everyone had forgotten my birthday! But then as I walked into my office, my secretary smiled and said to me, “Happy birthday, boss!” Because everyone else had forgotten, I felt so special so when my secretary asked me if I wanted to go for lunch with her I jumped at the chance. After we’d eaten lunch, she invited me back to her apartment and again I jumped at the chance. When we got there, she asked, “Do you mind if I just go into the bedroom for a minute?” “No problem, I’ll just wait here,” I said. Five minutes later my secretary came back out of the bedroom with a birthday cake, my wife, my parents, my kids, my friends, & my colleagues all yelling, “SURPRISE!!!”… While I was waiting on the sofa… naked.
