President’s Message Greetings once again everyone....seems like only yesterday the August PVRA newsletter came out, and here it is, time to "report in" - Haze, thanks again for the reminder! September - yikes - end of summer, and beginning of autumn. "Summer should get a speeding ticket". Back to school, back to routines...suppose there are going to be some happy moms out there...and nervous ones as the wee ones get on the bus or start Kindergarten for the first time. Enough of that....what does that mean for us seniors....well, harvest the fruits of our wee gardens, clean up the machinery (except for the golf cart), mow for the last time, NOT. Time to put the white pants and shoes away...unless you are venturing south for the winter. Time to start thinking about resuming, or starting some of the many exercise programs offered in-park! Sherron has been faithful in providing aquatics and Jo keeps our bodies zumba'd! And if that doesn't "keep away the pounds" then there is a (walking) program for that too! Carmelle stomps out a pretty mean line dance y'all. If one feels like throwing things, there is always horseshoes, or take out your frustration with darts...or perhaps learn a new
game, Mahjong (skills required: tactics, observation, memory, adaptive strategies)....sort of something we strive for every day! Texas Hold-Em, Cribbage, Whist, Bridge will keep you awake after dinner, or Bingo might add a few coinage to your pockets....then you can buy some craft supplies for Monday afternoons. Golf sort of combines all of these sports! Speaking of sports, autumn signals the beginning of football season. Apparently in the U.S it is the "official end of hot dog season" (I am -not making this stuff up)! Working with the new executive of PVRA has already been a rewarding experience. As you can see things are going well in the park. And I am not just speaking of the happy hours - welcoming new folks and friendships. Kudos to everyone for their hospitality, organizing skills, fabulous food, and great ideas. Every month brings a celebration in Paradise. Tasks are being completed, and we have to acknowledge Paradise Village Management for continuing to improve upon our roads and drainage. Also, the library/pool and exercise area has been made accessible for all to enjoy. The pool table is going to be recovered and I personally am donating a
set of Belgium numbered (Boston) balls to encourage more interest in the game. Thanks to the guys for replacing the pool table to its original spot. Also thank you to the library friends for keeping us well read. Summer has been superb....great weather, low bug count, beautiful clouds, avoiding the worst storms (which circled around us)...and visiting or vacationing. We aren't quite ready to say goodbye to summer yet....but we did bid a fond farewell to past president Ludwik and (First Lady) Ruth Jarco. They will certainly be missed, not only for their tremendous contributions to the betterment of Paradise Village, but also for their kindness and friendship. We wish them well in their new surroundings in Victoria. They both extended invitations to visit - so far we can only stay two weeks....so get your dibs in!! (Just kidding you two). Parting thoughts "happiness adds and multiples as you divide it with others". Rob Freeman, President PVRA

Words from the Editor Where did the summer go? As they say, time flies when you are having fun and WOW do the residents of this community know how to have fun! Great Happy Hour get togethers, Corn Roast, Paint classes, birthday parties! Lots going on. I took part in the Acrylic Pour class this month. What a great time! If you aren't already signed up for the next one, call Val Stanger to get on the wait list. Marilyn Brooke and I went to the Dawson Trail Museum to continue her research for her articles on the Dawson Trail. I hope you are enjoying her series as much as I am! This month also continues the Gardens of Paradise articles by Debbie Griffiths and Hobbyists of Paradise by

Jo Kehler. Great informative interviews ladies! In this issue is a new, fun little feature, “Where is This?”. It is like a minitreasure hunt, but you don’t get to keep the treasure. The purpose is to get us to notice our surroundings when we are out and about, either walking or riding. It was suggested that we offer a prize for the first person to correctly identify the location, but for this month this is just for the pride of the find. Good luck and have fun! I made the decision to take over the actual desk-top publishing portion of getting newsletter out. For the past 2 years we paid a professional to do that. I have found it frustrating trying to work around someone else’s schedule and I am a bit of a control freak when
something is ultimately my responsibility. This is the first complete newsletter I have done cover to cover since I took over from Debbie in May. Constructive criticism is welcome and encouraged. As fall approaches many activities that were on summer sabbatical are starting up again. I have included the listing of activity leaders and contact information on the inside back cover. Call the leader with any questions you may have. All activities are open to all residents of Paradise Village! Check the calendar of events and get involved! Come on out and have some
fun! Happy Reading! Haze Werner

The Internet What’s that? “C’mon Ma you have got to try it” I pleaded to my elderly Mother. I don’t know how my Mother lasted this long without ever using the internet, but enough was enough! I thought. “Ok” she said reluctantly settling down by the computer and slowly putting on her reading glasses “what do I do now?” “Now I’m going to open the home page of google”, I explained. “OK here it is! Now type in ANY question you want into the bar over here and you will find an answer to your question.” I confidently assured her. My Mother looked at me warily, thought for a second, and slowly began to type, “How is Gertrude doing this morning?”

History of Paradise Area Dawson Trail: Part 2 The Red River Settlement
I have had a lot of fun and adventures while researching and preparing for this article. Haze Werner and I traveled to the Dawson Road Museum in Richer. We also learned about museums across Eastern Manitoba and made contact with other Dawson Trail enthusiasts. Last month I promised you stories about things that happened along the trail. The first two take place in Red River area, where a dangerous mix of race, religion and land ownership disputes was having an effect on efforts to survey and build the Dawson trail/road. At the center of the disagreements was whether the Metis had legal title to the land on which they had built their homes. To understand this we need to look back at what the prairies were like before the business men, politicians and settlers arrive in the Red River settlement. It was quite a different place. The prairies rolled on for miles and there was no one to dispute land titles or to care much about them. The Hudson Bay Company created in 1670, traded with the First Nations peoples for 200 years in a mutually profitable relationship.
The First Nations people traveled the great plains hunting the buffalo and traders lived a life similar to them. The traders travels lead to encounters with native women and the result was marriage according to the “custom of the country'. These unions were blessed with children creating a whole new cultural group – a mixed-race people who in later years became known as Metis. In 1812 the Selkirk settlers began arriving and took up land along the Red River just north of the junction with the Assiniboine River. The Metis population along the Red and Assiniboine steadily increased. They were not an agrarian people. Two or three times a year every year, virtually the entire Metis population set out across the prairie on great buffalo hunts. They were joined in the Red River settlement by French speaking settlers, some of whom were immigrants from Quebec. Thirty miles east of St. Boniface was another small Metis community Grand Ile-de-Chenes (now St. Anne) which sat on the Seine River. For many years all these people lived in isolation because of geography but by 1850 things were beginning to change. With the influx of immigrants from Ontario and work started on the Dawson Trail in the Assiniboine area there were clashes of ownership. Land ownership was not important to the Metis, but in Ontario, later Canada, property ownership was of great importance so clashes
were inevitable. There was also the clash of religion, since the soldiers and settlers from Ontario were mostly Protestant Orangemen and the Metis were Catholic. Many easterners also looked down on the Metis and did not treat them well. The first story is about a dispute between John Snow and his roadworkers, which could have ended up badly for him. In 1868 the farmers were in dire straits as their crops had been destroyed by a plague of grasshoppers. So it was decided to start building the westernmost section of the Dawson Road running from Red River to the North West Angle on Lake of the Woods in order to give them work. This was a little dicey as Canada did not own this part of the Red River Colony. However Governor MacTavish felt that finding work for the men was important and this area would soon be part of Canada anyway.
Orangemen in western Canada helped suppress the rebellions of Louis Riel in 1870 and 1885. The murder of abducted Orangeman Thomas Scott was a turning point in the 1870 Red River Rebellion which caused the Dominion government to launch the Red River Expedition to restore order. The first Orange Warrant in Manitoba and the North West Territories was carried by a member of this expedition. .

September 2019
Dawson Trail: Part 2— Red River Settlement The road supervisor John Snow was an abrasive and opportunistic man from eastern Canada. He was also an Orangeman and not too quiet about it. He offered jobs to many of the Metis from Grande Ilede-Chenes and they grudgingly accepted the work. He also included a number of newly arrived immigrants from Ontario who were also Orangemen. It did not help relations between Snow and the workers they were paid mostly in goods, not cash, and they had to get these goods at Snow's merchant friend's shops. The workers weren't happy but it was work and there wasn't much they could do about it. Snow encountered a major labor problem when the workers claimed they were underpaid. They confronted Snow and when he refused to raise their pay, they laid down their tools. For a day and a half they sat idle, angry and frustrated by Snow's refusal to agree to higher wages. Some of the workers were so frustrated they seized Snow and dragged him to the edge of the Seine River, where they threatened to throw him in, if their demands were not met. Fearing for his life, Snow gave in. That evening Snow set out for Fort Gary where he laid a complaint against four workers he considered to be at fault. They were hauled into court and found guilty and fined. The second story is about Andre Nault and the Dawson Road Surveyors. On October 11, 1869, Andre Nault was at home on his
12
farm at St. Vital some five miles south of Fort Gary. He felt contented with his life but the content was hinged with concern. He had heard about the changes occurring at Red River and at the heart of his worry was land ownership. Most of his fore bearers had settled along the Red and Assiniboine rivers before anyone thought to keep records of who lived where. On that early day ownership was the last thing on Mr. Nault's mind. He was worried about the whereabouts of his cows. He decided to go and have a look. He soon spotted them but also saw something strange. There were several men off to the west obviously busy doing something. They appeared to be on his land so he rushed over to investigate. They were a party of surveyors led by Captain A. C. Webb.
“You go no further”. The surveyors, faced with these grim-faced men, picked up their transom and left, leaving their survey chain behind. Riel and his companions were satisfied. As Webb and his men left, Nault bent down, picked up the chain and carried it home. The chain, which the Nault family maintains has been in the hands of the family since the events of October 11, 1869, was on display in the MonseigneurTache Site in St. Genevieve, Manitoba. However, they have loaned it to the St. Boniface Museum while they renoNault was suspicious of these vate and update their museum. men and what they were doing but his attempts to communicate that Museums: The Dawson Road Muthey should stop were useless. Dawson Trail: Part 2— Red River Settlement While at Dawson Road Museum I picked up a booklet of museum tours entitled Wondering Through History: Eastern Manitoba Museum Tour. If you are interested there were a few copies at the Dawson Trail Museum which is open at 1:00pm on Tuesday and Thursday. Or you can write to Eastman Tourism Association, at the address below. I did not have time to visit the Monseigneur-Tache Historic Site Museum in Ste. Genevieve, Mb. but thought I should find out if Nault's chain was still there. I phoned and as you read above, it was not. But I learned that although the chain is not there, many of the artifacts on display exemplify French-Canadian culture including the Metis Heritage of the area. So in closing I suggest you to take some time this fall to Look at the signs on Dawson Road as you travel into St. Anne to Richer or along the road to Lorette and think about the early pioneers who braved the journey down the trail to the Red River Colony Look for signs off the trans Canada highway going east and travel down to see remaining parts of the road [picture of sign in book] Get the pamphlet listing the museums and visit any still open this fall (call ahead) And reflect on the rich and varied heritage of this area. Horse Joke Jack strode into ‘John’s Stable’ looking to buy a horse. “Listen here” said John, “I’ve got just the horse your looking for, the only thing is, he was trained by an interesting fellow. He doesn’t go and stop the usual way. The way to get him to stop is to scream heyhey the way to get him to go is to scream Thank God. Jim nodded his head, “fine with me, can I take him for a test run?” Jim was having the time of his life this horse sure could run he thought to himself. Jim was speeding down the dirt road when he suddenly saw a cliff up ahead “stop!” screamed Jim, but the horse kept on going. No matter how much he tried he could not remember the words to get it to stop. “yoyo” screamed Jim but the horse just kept on speeding ahead. It was 5 feet from the cliff when Jim suddenly remembered “heyhey!” Jim screamed. The horse skidded to a halt just 1 inch from the cliff. Jim could not believe his good fortune, he looked up to the sky, raise his hands in the air, breathed a deep sigh of relief and said with conviction “Thank God.”

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Cowboy Caviar This months recipe comes to you from Gay Lemay. Gay says this is s staple at functions in Texas! Not only is it delicious its versatile as a dip with chips or as a salad. And as an added bonus it’s good for you!
Ingredients Salad/Dip
1 and 3/4 cups sweet corn (use frozen that has been thawed, drained canned corn, or cut off the cob) 1 can (15 ounces) BUSH’S® Blackeye Peas, drained 1 can (15 ounces) BUSH’S® Black Bean Fiesta (or regular BUSH’S® Black Beans) 1 and 3/4 cup small cherry tomatoes, halved or quartered
1/2 cup red bell pepper, diced 1/2 cup green bell pepper, diced 1/3 cup red onion, diced (soak in cold water to remove the "bite" if desired) 1 small jalapeno pepper* finely diced 1/3 cup finely chopped cilantro (loosely measured) 2 large and ripe avocados, diced
Dressing
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon garlic
powder 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil Fine sea salt and freshly cracked pepper Tortilla chips, for serving Additional cilantro and lime wedges, for serving, optional
Instructions In a large bowl, add the corn, BUSH’S® Blackeye Peas, drained and rinsed, and undrained BUSH’S® Black Bean Fiesta. Prep the veggies: (as you prep these veggies remember the caviar is best when all of the ingredients are roughly the same size so aim to dice the veggies around the size of the beans) halve or quarter the cherry tomatoes, dice the red pepper, dice the green pepper, finely dice the jalapeno, and finely dice the cilantro. Add right on top of the bean and corn mixture. In a mason jar add in the red wine vinegar, freshly squeezed lime juice, sugar, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt & pepper (to taste, I add about 1/2 teaspoon of each), and olive oil. Seal the jar and shake until combined. Right before serving, dice up the avocados and gently stir those along with the dressing into the caviar. Serve with an extra sprinkle of cilantro, lime wedges, and tortilla chips as desired. If not serving immediately, make sure to store the dressing separately from the caviar and only add the avocados right before eating. If you plan to have leftovers, only add dressing and avocado to what you will be eating presently and then store the three separately. Recipe Notes *If you're worried about heat, add half of a jalapeno at first. Also, remove seeds for a less spicy caviar.

WHY WE LOVE WATCHING MOVIES Exciting movies provide pure entertainment and allow us to escape reality and immerse ourselves into another world on the big screen for about 120 minutes either alone or with friends, munching on popcorn. They make us connect with fictional characters we've never met before, allow us to empathize with them while we watch them struggle, bounce back, then save the day. Movies provide a rollercoaster of emotions. We feel happiness, shock, sadness, intensity, nervousness. We laugh, cry, think! When did you last go to see a movie? Movie hosts Ila and Brian Cooper in Paradise Village have presented Academy Award Winning motion pictures for the past two fall seasons in their limited seating cinema room for park residents. Films are presented in widescreen Blu-ray and stereo surround sound for heightened reality and an intimate you-are-there feeling. Watch for show dates at the Rec Centre and outside mailbox bulletin boards. _____________________________________________________________________________

8-Ball / Snooker League We seem to be getting a lot of people interested in starting an 8 ball and snooker league in the park. We currently have about 12 men and a few women. We will probably get more if we can get the pool table recovered and get some decent cues. I recently received a donation of snooker balls from the Norwood/St Boniface Legion. They are much better balls than the ones we have. We still need some Boston balls. They have to be the small size balls for a snooker table. We will buy new ones if we have to. Anyone wishing to donate towards the new cloth and some cues can contact Pat Werner. patwerner@mymts.net or call 422-6918. I will start by donating $20. We do need someone to run this. Preferably someone with experience in running a small informal league. Hopefully a men’s league and a women’s league. It sounds like we will be having an evening summer and winter league. If anyone has anymore ideas let me know. Thanks Pat Werner

MAYNARD-RONNMARK HAPPY HOUR Carmelle Maynard and Garry Ronnmark raised the bar when it came to presenting the August Happy Hour in Paradise Village. All 100 or so friendly residents in attendance were spread across the expansive, gorgeously landscaped backyard on Harmony Lane, relaxing with cool refreshments under colorful umbrellas and the roomy gazebo. Just a great opportunity to socialize with new residents or catch up with the latest goings-on with old friends. Meanwhile, our congenial hosts took charge of the outdoor barbeque kitchen while our imaginative MC, Ilene Goschke, conducted a lively and humorous session of the "oldie weds" gameshow, complete with an expert panel of longtime wedded couples. Most could actually recall their lives most memorable highlights. As the hungry crowd lined up Garry, Carmelle, and several eager helpers served up mountains of thick juicy burgers and hot dogs, complimented by potato salad, coleslaw, and watermelon, followed by yummy ice cream and bread pudding. BIG smiles on everyone's faces. How does anyone top this? Greatly appreciated.

GARDENS IN PARADISE Where is time going? We are already at the September edition of the PVRA Newsletter which means that summer is coming to an end, but what a great summer it has been. I am so happy that I have had the opportunity to share with you this summer our “Gardens in Paradise”. Earlier on in the spring while doing my walks I was amazed to see all the beautiful gardens & meet some equally beautiful residence in the Village. I had approached some residence complimenting them on the beauty of their yards & I am now featuring my last story for the summer season. So off to see Richard & Linda on Paradise Drive. Before walking up their side walk I took the opportunity to take a couple of pictures of their front yard gardens.
As I announced my arrival with “Who is that person taking pictures of our yard”, I see Linda sitting in the sunroom with Richard close by. We all had a chuckle as Linda invites me in. Coffee, Tea or water Richard says – I politely say “No Thanks”. I then say “ok” as I don’t want Linda to be drinking a beverage by herself. And before you know it Richard has 2 coffee in hand for myself & Linda. We start off by talking about card games & other nongarden topics. Then I get started with my many questions. Tell me, was the garden like it is today when you moved in? Linda explains that the garden area was there but needed some TLC. It was all very overgrown & with a lot of work by both Linda & Richard (who says he is the whole digger/labourer) it is slowly getting there. Linda & Richard thank their neighbour Bonnie for being their garden mentor. The plants are in their 4th season. Richard & Linda lived in the city & also had a cottage in Kenora. They had gardens in both locations & when they decided to sell the house & move to the Village they knew they wanted to take their plants with them. So unfortunately the plants had to be moved twice.
once to their son’s house then to their new home here. It was tough on the plants. ‘ “Most of our plants are perennials which make gardening a bit easier”, says Linda. “We then put in some annuals to add color to the garden. A lot of the plants are from family & friends.” Linda tells me they have a small stake with the name of the person who gave them the plant which brings good memories of them each of those special people
23
September 2019 As I comment on them it reminds me of the Robin’s nest Roger & I had at our place. I show Linda & Richard the picture of the baby robin who is ready to fly from the nest.
I admire a purple flower I see from inside the sunroom. Linda tells me that it is called Monks Hood.
These flowers are good for the bumble bees which are in turn good for all the flowers. The main garden has an ar-
ray of Hostas (approximately 40 plants)
& 12-15 different color of day Lilies
24
Richard states that they plant based on height – tall plants in the back reducing to the shorter plants in the front of the garden. Linda & Richard’s friend Lillian Copp from Copp Garden Centre once told them - that remember you have to eat to stay healthy & alive so remember to do the same for your plants. As a result Richard makes sure to give the vegetable garden Miracle Grow at least once a week & waters the plant garden with rain water when needed. Within their beautiful garden I see many bird feeders & bird houses
. Linda then tells me a story of how she helped raise a baby robin back at their house. Linda comments how lovely it is to have the birds in their back yard. So like many in the Vilage not only do Linda & Ricard have flower gardens but they enjoy their vegetable garden. I see from a distance this tall plant – what is that plant I ask? It is a squash plant.
Paradise Village News Linda tells me that Bonnie has taught them to help out the plants if the bees aren’t pollenating them. We use a Qtip to transfer the pollen from the male to the female. Linda then shows me the squash on the plant & the male & female flowers .
Other vegetables are onions, beets, ketchup & fries tomatos (tomato on the top & potato in the ground). Another vegetable plant I had never heard of.
Rhubarb in the garden is about 2 years old & is doing quite well. Linda & Richard also have a variety of potted flowers adding color & beauty to their deck. Well I think it is time for me to say good night & thank you to another great resident of our Village. But as I am leaving I see more beauty & snap a couple more pictures. As I am walking home I check the time & I have been there for 1 hour 20 minutes, sorry guys but I am not very good at just stopping for a few minutes. This new adventure of mine has been a lot of fun & if I can would love to continue next spring with more Gardens in Paradise. So here are just a few more pictures of the beauty in our Village. Maybe your garden is one of them.
Editor’s Note: Please enjoy more of Debbie’s fabulous garden photos throughout this issue.

HOBBYISTS OF PARADISE Hey everyone, I am back again with another feature story on one of our many talented residents living here in Paradise. This is just a little insight on what is involved to doing this hobby
Ken the Wood Carver Man Ken and Terry have lived in Paradise for 10 years. While wintering in Texas Ken was looking for a hobby and his neighbour introduced him to wood carving. This started a whole new world for Ken. (Terry was happy as this gave her more time to go golfing). Ken joined the carving club with his neighbour and after 9 years he has carved 70 – 80 pieces. An average piece takes about 35-40 hours depending on size and details. However this Eagle took approximately 114 hours.
Ken’s uses Basswood for 90% of his carvings, but occasionally he has used Butternut wood. He usually starts off with 1”-2” thick blocks. He downloads pictures off the internet or makes a drawing from a picture and then stencils it on to the block of wood. He uses a band saw to cut out the figure. His next step is to carve the outline of the picture using different knives. (Image #2206). Finishing is done with a dremel tool and he uses a wood burning kit for the delicate and final details like feathers, and hair. He gets the wood from the carving club, and most of the accessories are purchased from different shops for carvers. He uses bamboo, cottonwood bark, and mesquite wood for making either a stand or base for his carvings.

Paradise Village News
Ken the Wood Carver Man—continued Wood carving has been a rewarding hobby for Ken, and he is very good at it. His carvings have won ribbons, and awards, but the best reward is when he sees the joy and happiness that one of his carving gives to someone. (Image #0236 & 0827) Ken has given most of his pieces away to family and friends. All their children own a piece that he has made for them. His greatest legacy is that they will look at the carving and remember that dad was a wood carver.
Well hope you all are enjoying these stories of our so very talented and gifted residents here in Paradise. See you next month when I again will feature another great hobbyist. Submitted by Jo Kehler

Puzzle Solutions This month I am including both the August and September puzzle solutions. Going forward the solutions will be in the same issue as the actual puzzle. I am doing this because I know for myself that on hard puzzles I may ‘cheat’ on one clue in order to complete the puzzle. If I have to wait a month I don’t go back to finish the puzzle. Non-cheaters shouldn’t mind either way LOL!

ACRYLIC POUR CLASS Fun was had by all when a few people got together with Val Stanger and Donna Sandelli, to create some beautiful artwork. We call it “dirty pour acrylic“, where we mix acrylic colors, add flotrol liquid and a silicone spray, then layer the paint. Pouring the paint and manipulating it to cover the canvas, creates lovely “cells” in the paint and you end up with a different pattern each time. We had quite a mess to clean up afterward, but everyone was thrilled with the results. Another class will be held in September.
