Think about it... - I read that 4,153,237 people got married last year. Not to cause any trouble....but shouldn’t that be an even number? - I find it ironic that the colors red, white and blue stand for freedom until they are flashing behind you. - When wearing a bikini, women reveal 90% of their body. Men are so polite they only look at the covered parts. - Relationships are a lot like algebra. Have you

ever looked at your X and wondered Y? - You know that tingly little feeling you get when you love someone- That’s common sense leaving your body - My therapist says I have a preoccupation with vengeance. We’ll see about that! - I think my neighbor is stalking me as she’s been Googling my name on her computer. I saw it through my telescope last night. - Money talks ... but all mine ever says is goodbye.

- You’re not fat, you’re just easier to see. - If you think nobody cares whether you’re alive, try missing a couple of payments. - I always wondered what the job application is like at Hooters. Do they just give you a bra and say, “Here, fill this out? “ - Money can’t buy happiness, but it keeps the kids in touch! - The location of your mailbox shows you how far away from your house you can go in a robe before you start looking like

a mental patient. - The reason Mayberry was so peaceful and quiet was because nobody was married. Andy, Aunt Bea, Barney, Floyd, Howard, Goober, Gomer, Sam, Earnest T Bass, Helen, Thelma Lou, Clara and, of course, Opie were all single. The only married person was Otis, and he stayed drunk!

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

A Letter to the Newsletter Editor:

Dear Editor, You can change things that in your own opinion need to be changed, not what someone else thinks. We are living in a society that has freedom of choice. One cannot change their nationality or the colour of their skin. One does not need to change their beliefs, as that is also a freedom of choice and there are many other reasons as well… For myself, I was raised in our capital city of Ottawa, Ontario. I am of native heritage and many of my large family carry those traits except 3 of us are blond. We were joked about that we were the “blond Indians.” These signs did present problems to our family because so many people judge by a person’s appearance and not what they have inside. Indians, not the politically correct word now. When I was growing up there were signs in stores in my hometown of Ottawa that read “No Indians Allowed”. Shocking but true. I did missionary work in many third world countries for 2 months at a time over about 10 years. I saw some of the worst things, but also saw the strength of human nature. I saw the love of people for all people. I often said, if our children in high school went to one of these countries to stay for even one week (not in a hotel but amongst the people) they would have totally different outlook on many things in life. So, people have to understand that some live with prejudice throughout their entire lives. We still have a freedom of choice. This means that we do not need permission from anyone to direct our decisions, if they are within the law. Everyone has a right to their opinion, but do not ever think that yours in the only opinion. Being rude to others in never acceptable and name calling is childish. Prejudice does diminish one’s ability to trust, as even an insinuation puts up barriers. Don’t make jokes about someone’s differences in people behind their back, or speak words behind their back that you would not say to their face. All of us are created equal, but we each have anomalies (something that deviates from what is standard, normal, or expected), either ones you can see or not see. Remember none of us are perfect and from where I sit, only He can judge me and so far He has blessed us with a long life together and supports us in the difficult times we now live in. Try hoping well for each other, instead of trying to judge others. Edythe Pryor, Paradise Village Resident.

Words from the Editor This is my last ‘words from the editor’ but that does not mean you may not hear from me down the road as a letter to the editor from time to time. Providing a new newsletter editor comes forward at the meeting of course. Paradise Village began in 1991 and the vision of this Village was created to support an aging population in the area of Ste Anne, etc. Paradise Village was meant to become a thriving community of like minded people who were looking for friendship, camaraderie, entertainment, relaxation and the quiet life that a rural setting can provide. The location was ideal for both travelling to Winnipeg or east to cottage country or south to the states. It was unfortunate though that the roads and sewage were not thought out with future in mind. The PVRA was created to enhance the social life of Paradise Village Residents and as a liaison to Management. Here we sit today. Many of those who first moved here have either passed on or moved out but there are still those here who remember well what life was like and they have stayed despite any con-

troversy or roads or weather etc. Since I have lived here (2013) there has been a turnover of homes to the tune of 610 per year. That means a lot of new residents. I ask that some of you new residents and members support our PVRA and step up and help out as an executive member or new volunteer. I do not want to see the PVRA discontinue, that would be a shame, so please come forward. Hope to see you there! I would like to briefly speak about my last editorial in the April issue and some comments received via facebook and through members. Yes, there has been improvement on the treatment of our residents because of the lawyer. Yes not all residents have been treated unfairly by Management and not all residents are members of the PVRA but, if even one resident is unfairly treated, this is unacceptable. Perhaps if anyone has a good rapport with Management then maybe stepping up and helping those who experience an issue could offer some support or guidance. It is important to hear the side of those who feel they have no issues with Management or that you

have been treated kindly. Your words and knowledge can only benefit this community and working together should be the direction for us all. It is not black and white and every case is individual but at the end of the day we all should be treated equally and without prejudice. My time as the newsletter editor has been very rewarding but challenging at times when fitting in prep time to produce the newsletter because as you know, I am still employed full time. Thank you to those who have supported me and helped me over the 4 years I worked as the PVRA Newsletter Editor. I am sorry to let it go but it is time to step back and let someone with fresh eyes take over. I am very appreciative of those who provided many articles, pictures, and information that each month went into the newsletter. I have worked with 3 Executives and have always felt like a team member and appreciated for the hard work the newsletter could be at times. I value everyone’s friendship and hope to continue supporting the PVRA in other ways.

I suggest that there should be a team approach regarding the newsletter in where there should be people under the editor to: take photos at functions, do the write-ups for functions, pick-up and distribute the newsletters to the residents (Frank Leys will no longer be the lead in this), the phone book should be the membership committee’s responsibility and maybe more residents could be submitting articles that pertain to the culture and environment of our Paradise Village. I will support anyone who wants this job. For now I will continue to look after the advertising contacts. This is the revenue required to produce and print this newsletter and it can be a lot of work. I would like someone else to take over in the fall though. I want to encourage you all to continue to use these advertisers whenever possible as many have been very faithful throughout the years advertising with us. Good luck to the next Executive and its team. Yours truly,

Debbie Kokil

A Letter to the Newsletter Editor: Dear Editor,

Time for Leadership Volunteers to Stand and Be Counted. Paradise Village Residents Association members will elect a new PVRA Executive on May 15th, 2019. The stated objectives of the PVRA are to maintain and enhance the quality of life for all village residents; and to, provide a liaison between management and residents. It seems reasonable, therefore that the new executive possess strong communication skills, diplomacy, enthusiasm, stimulating ideas, a spirit of fair play, patience, and the willingness to demonstrate calmness and compromise that will make a positive difference. No small task. But for the moment think about why you decided to live here; the benefits, the relaxing lifestyle you’ve become accustomed to, the fun and camaraderie available to everyone; and most important, your expectations for a happier future. Now, pause for a moment…and consider giving back to your community by standing tall and allowing your name to stand for a position on the PVRA Executive. In turn we residents will have your back. Over the years villagers have demonstrated their wealth of experience, ideas, initiative, boundless energy and confidence. So many still choose to share freely of their time to get things done. Candidates for the PVRA Executive can be reassured that most villagers have always backed beneficial initiatives, ongoing social programs, and the sound judgement of previous executives since the Association formed in 1991. Moving forward, our proud PVRA continues to be strong, respected, valued, and deserving of all residents support. Let’s not forget that our previous Executive has graciously extended their time well beyond what was expected according to our constitution. There will be no further extension. As a cohesive group they maintained a vigorous and unifying force within our tight knit community in an honourable fashion, wrestled with the myriad of challenges they faced, but ultimately succeeded in maintaining harmony and dignity between the Village’s owners, management, and residents in Paradise Village. Indeed, what more could we have expected from our Executive? As a group they deserve to stand down with pride, step back to savour their achievements, and resume their retirement in this beautiful woodland community. Their remarkable and dedicated service has set a new benchmark as to the quality of life for all and moved our Village forward. I applaud their tenacity and dedication, and hold them in deepest affection. Brian Cooper, Paradise Village Resident

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Note from your PVRA Secretary, Edythe Pryor: The PVRA is made up of all the people in Paradise Village who choose to join. It is not just the Executive! Like any organization, it is only as good as the participation the members put in. WE ARE NOT ANTI-MANAGEMENT, as some think, we are here as a liaison for members with the Management. This also depends on Management’s willingness to work with ALL of us. We do try to make some recreation events for the purpose of mingling with neighbours. It is your choice to attend and meet your neighbours. If anyone has opinions of what you feel could make this better for all, you can call and talk to any member of the Executive or come to a meeting to voice them. If you want to bring up any topic but do not wish to be named that can be done and confidentiality will be met. The Executive is very approachable and no question or comment is trivialized. We are in need for YOU to become part of the Executive. So, we hope you can all attend the 1st Bi-Annual 2019 General Meeting on May 15th and participate in this neighbourhood group and help improve the lives of all your neighbours. Hope to see you there! Edythe Pryor

Thank You We would like to thank everyone for the cards, calls and visits while Brian was in the hospital and now at home. A special thank you to Efie Lowing, our neighbour, who kept the snow cleared at the back of our home and to Phil Savoie and Myrna Mackenzie for looking after our dog Simba while I was at the hospital with Brian. Also to Phil again for staying with Brian when I had to run some errands and attend appointments. A Huge thank you to whoever blew out our front sidewalk after Brian had his 1st heart attack. That day the Paramedics could not bring the stretcher up the front sidewalk because it was shoveled too narrow. Brian had to be walked out to the stretcher. Ambulances are not allowed to enter at the back of homes either. This was not a good situation as time was of the essence. So in the future we suggest everyone makes sure your sidewalks are shovelled correctly for stretchers to be wheeled through. Brian is home now and doing okay. Thank you again everyone! Brian and Anne Prior P.S. The shovelling team that comes out is very much appreciated so please don’t get the wrong idea;but, we need to inform the office that this is a very important thing to have the sidewalk shoveled wide enough to accommodate a stretcher when “Heaven Forbid” there is a need. All the best Brian Prior. Debbie Kokil

Spring Tea Report As one of the volunteers for the Hypnotist Show I thought it appropriate to comment on the wonderful PVRA Annual Spring Tea. First of all, upon arriving at the Spring Tea, you were welcomed by lovely ladies dressed in their finest to take our tickets and direct us to any one of the beautifully decorated tables. The whole hall was so colourful and calming, filled with many handmade tissue paper flowers and butterflies. We sat down and continued to admire the table filled with plates of homemade dainty sandwiches, cut vegetables and pickles etc. A champagne glass was then filled by one of our own Paradise Village men who politely continued to fill our glass or our tea cup with tea or coffee and then serve us dessert of cheesecake or lemon tarts. We enjoyed each others company laughed and relaxed but then, could it get any better? Well, apparently so! James Grant, a wellknown Hypnotist (who also has a private practice) together with his assistant Bev were hired to entertain us. I was asked earlier if I would step up to be hypnotised and I said yes. It was not my first time. About 20 years ago

I had experienced hypnotism at a function in Ste Anne. I really had a blast then so I hoped I would enjoy it again. Luckily it turned out that way and I was not the only person to have fallen under the spell. About 12 of us both women and men stepped forward. James did his thing and out some of us went. You hear and know what is going on and when he tells you or askes you to do something it is like “I think I can do that!” and away you go. My favorite part was the piano playing. I really liked the song he chose and I truly thought if I could play the piano it would look like I really was Jerry Lee Lewis. I remember being quite out of breath too when the song was over.

Another great part was the tropical pets and what trick they could do. Too funny. You really had to be there. Cockroach, lizard, lion, parrot, flea hahaha. Many were apprehensive on what James was asking us to do and in particular putting on the x-ray glasses and telling him what we saw. Ilene was the first to get them and she did not trust him and so said no. So I said no others refused to see what I believe he was hoping we’d see. Ilene also did a great job of protecting us all with the pretend water gun. She just wanted to spray James. But the highlight of the hypnotism was my rendition of Shania Twain’s song “Any Man of Mine”

using a rubber chicken as a microphone. This was Shania’s first hit and I knew the song well. The ladies thought it was a set up because I knew all the words. It was fun! Then Gerry Kiyan was asked to put on a blonde wig pick up a toy guitar and be Elvis singing “You Ain’t Nothin But a Hounddog”. He sang, he strummed he gyrated his pelvis. It was fun too! To everyone who stepped up that took some guts and we are all thankful for your participation. Thank you Linda and all the helpers who spent so much time preparing for this Spring Tea. I can’t wait until next year. Shania over and out (Debbie Kokil)

From the Social Committee Chair Linda Fulmore; I would like to extend a big thank you to all who made the PVRA Annual Spring Tea another successful event. To Gwen and Carole + all helpers who decorated and created flowers. It was a beautiful atmosphere! To Cheryl + helpers who made all of the food including homemade cheesecake and tarts. The food was arranged elegantly and was absolutely delicious. Thank you to all the gentlemen who dressed up and treated us like royalty serving us tea, coffee, and dessert. You men are very much appreciated for helping out like that. Thank you to those who donated gifts towards

the Fascinator Hat Prizes and Congratulations to all those ladies who took the time to create and wear a Fascinator Hat and to those who won a prize for the best Fascinator Hat. Well done everyone. The highlight of the event was the volunteers who stepped up and became hypnotized under the careful watch of James Grant. It was so very funny and who knew the talent that lay just below the surface of some of the volunteers. Our stomachs ached long after the hour long presentation and performances of the hypnotist show. There were pet fleas, cockroaches, lions, lizards, and baby

ing job and to see the fun and camaraderie of all the residents at any function that was put on made it all worth while. Even though I am stepping down as the Social Committee Chair I am available and would like very much to help out with any functions or events that the new Social Committee Chair presents to the Village. The only activity I will continue to lead is the Bingo which On behalf of myself and runs from September to my husband Brian I wish May. If anyone would like to give a monetary donation, please make the cheque out to Holy Cross School and on the bottom left side of the cheque, write Tabs for Wheelchairs. Tax receipts will be issued for anything over $20.
