Paradise Village Singles - December
December started off in true festive fashion with our party on the 1st. It was a great affair graciously hosted by Carol Stoess who fit 20 people in her home. She had made it truly attractive with numerous decorations of the season. We were even greeted warmly by a lit tree in her sunroom ) There was a huge array of food and drink and we were surely in the spirit in more ways than one! Among the “first timers were Debbie Kokil and her mother Doreen Bilyk. We noticed that they enjoyed the evening and we were glad to have them there. Doreen is now famous for her cheese buns (yum)! A gift exchange was held and there was great frivolity whilst folks chose a gift by number. Carol made a perfect Santa appearing with her singing hat. The only person with any idea of the contents was Les who inspected every gift as they arrived. Heavy or light they were all a surprise, in any case. The birthday girl was Pat Shaffer and she was presented with a delicious Tiramisu Cake which she shared with all. A Very Happy Birthday Pat!
Want to come together again for continued fellowship and fun? The next pot luck will be: Monday, January 5th, 2015 at the home of Olga Bashak 14 Paradise Drive All singles welcome! Happy New Year!! 4

They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family and work. HOW I LEARNED TO MIND MY OWN BUSINESS: Courtesy of a facebook share
I was walking past the mental hospital the other day, and all the patients were shouting, “13...13...13.” The fence was too high to see over, but I saw a little gap in the planks, so I looked through to see what was going on. Some idiot poked me in the eye with a stick, then they all started shouting, “14...14...14.”

Snow Fleas???? WE HAVE THOSE????
PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
What, snow has fleas? Where? Most of us have never noticed snow fleas, unique little creatures that are really very common, and right under our noses. Here's how to find them:
On a warm, sunny winter day, take a look at the base of a tree where the snow may have melted down to expose some leaves, or where the snow is shallow or hollowed out just a bit. There you'll find a sprinkling of what looks like "pepper" or "ashes" on the surface of the snow. Each speck you see is a snow flea. Once you find them, watch closely and see what they're up to.
Snow fleas are actually tiny insects which come out on warm, sunny days to eat decayed plant material or sap oozing from the tree. They hop around acting like fleas and that's where they get their name, snow "fleas." They're not fleas though, but actually an arthropod called Collembola (kol-LEM-bo-la) or commonly called springtails which measure about 1/8 inch (2mm) long. They have a very unique catapult system to get around. Two "tails" on their back end are tucked up underneath their belly, held in place by tiny "hooks." When the springtail wants to move, they just release the spring-loaded "tails," called furcula, which hit the snow and send them flying into the air. Since snow fleas can't control their flight or direction, they frequently land in the same spot or only a few inches away. These are not just winter critters. You can find them any time of year in the forest living in the leaf litter stuck to the underside of leaves or on the surface of the soil, chomping on bits of rotting vegetation. They also live on the surface of ponds. You'd have to look very closely to see them here because they blend in well and are so tiny. Next time you're playing in the snow outside, or just going for a stroll, take a look and see if you can spy these incredible spring-loaded springtails, commonly called "snow fleas." 19

PARADISE VILLAGE CHRISTMAS DINNER IN RICHER
The annual Paradise Village Christmas dinner was held on Saturday the 13th of December. To all who came out and participated in the festivities a huge hug from the organisers who worked extremely hard to put on. I know from past it can be an organizing nightmare. The meal was catered by Celine from the Chicken Chef in Lorette What a delicious meal it was . Many thanks to her and her staff who did a great job. We began the evening with a message from our president Irene Cunningham who unfortunately due to health reasons could not attend This was followed by Grace done by Ray. We were serenaded by lovely Christmas music which was supplied by Pat and Marv Zubrin. After our delicious meal we held our door prizes. Murray McDonald was the winner of the Tassimo Machine and Gift Basket(honestly this was not a fix), Brian VanderBeek won the 50!50 which was a good sum of $108.00. PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Submitted by Paradise Village Resident Barb Prior Activities such as snow shoveling or walking through heavy wet snow and snow drifts can strain the heart enough to cause a heart attack. Snow shoveling can be more strenuous than exercising full throttle on a treadmill. Shoveling or pushing a heavy snow blower can cause a sudden increase in blood pressure and heart rate while the cold weather causes constriction of the blood vessels leading to a decrease in oxygen to the heart. Together this causes the heart to work harder and can trigger a potentially fatal heart attack. Individuals most at risk include: those with a prior history of heart attack and/or heart disease those with high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol those with a sedentary life style smokers Tips to protect your heart and reduce the risk of heart attack 1) Avoid shoveling immediately after waking in the morning as most heart attacks occur in the early morning when the blood is more prone to clotting. Wait at least 30 minutes and warm up slowly. 2) Do not eat a heavy meal before shoveling as the blood supply needed by your muscles gets Diverted to your stomach. 3) Don't smoke or drink coffee for at least one hour before and after shoveling as these Stimulants elevate both your blood pressure and heart rate. 4) Dress warmly in layers which traps air and increases insulation to reduce the risk of hypothermia. Cover your neck and head -- 50% of a person’s body heat is lost through these areas. Cover your mouth. Deep breathing of cold air can cause angina or trigger breathing problems. 5) Use a small shovel. 6) Begin slowly and take frequent breaks. Know the warning signs of a heart attack:
Tightness or burning in the chest, neck, back, jaw or arms, particularly the left arm Light headed ,dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath and cold sweats
IF YOU THINK YOU ARE HAVING A HEART ATTACK CALL 911 and take (chew) two 325mg plain aspirin not enteric coated. 21

Russ Prior
The image of a weightlifter graced the front of the Wintario lottery ticket. The weightlifter was Russ Prior. What had he achieved to receive such an honour? I was to find out over the next half hour when I visited Russ and his wife Barb on Harmony Lane. Throughout his career Russ has set over 130 weightlifting records in Canadian, Pan American, British Commonwealth & Olympic competition. He was a 13-time Canadian champion and, due to his father being a dual citizen, a one-time American champion. He was funded by Sport Canada because he was able to maintain his position as one of the top 8 lifters in the world. Prior to his involvement in weightlifting Russ was active in other sports. He was the 1969 Ontario junior badminton champion and was later offered a football scholarship to an American college. He gravitated to weightlifting and soon gained international standing. In 1968, at the age of 18, he set a Canadian record in the clean and jerk. He later won gold medals in the 1970, 1974 and 1978 British Commonwealth games as well as the British Commonwealth championship in 1980 and gold in the 1975 Pan American games. He was the Canadian flag bearer at the 1978 Commonwealth games. Russ made the 1972 Olympic team but could not compete due to an injury. He won a bronze medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, setting a record that was broken 3 minutes later by a Bulgarian lifter. In 1980 Russ was ranked fourth in the world but could not compete in the Moscow Olympics due to Canada's boycott. Russ balanced weightlifting with academic studies, earning degrees from Carlton, Queen's University, University of North Dakota & University of Manitoba. He coached ringette teams that won several Winnipeg and provincial titles and one western Canadian championship. During his 31 year tenure as a teacher at Nelson McIntyre Collegiate he guided junior weightlifting teams to 17 Canadian championships and a ninth place finish in the world championships. His proudest achievement? Having 3 children who are professionally employed and married with children of their own. Know someone you would like to see featured in the PVRA newsletter? Paradise Squares Paradise Squares travelled to Grand Squares on December 8th to retrieve our banner. We did not have the required one square (eight dancers) to do so, but Laura ingeniously made up two pseudo members – broom people completely attired. A good laugh was had by all & we got our banner back on ingenuity alone! Our December 16th Christmas Dance was well attended along with dancers from Beausejour Swinging Squares. We celebrated Bill Bonar’s 90th birthday with cake and song for which he was truly moved. WAY TO GO BILL, you have reached a milestone! The party continued after dancing with lots of food, punch, Christmas crackers and hats, a great dance to end the year. Dancing resumes on January 6th.

Christmas Basket Drive 2014 Whether the weather be foggy or cold the spirit of Christmas is in the air. It is heart warming to see the support that continues to surround us. The Richer Friends Who Care and Paradise Village Fellowship Christian Church committee coordinated the annual Christmas Basket drive for Richer and rural area. With Santa's helpers and your generosity we were able to distribute 20 baskets to needy families this Christmas season. A total of 27 children, will enjoy Santa's gifts of fuzzy PJ'S and socks that were chosen by Mrs. Clause and warm toques, mitts and scarves that were knitted by delightful grandmas. We wish to extend our sincere appreciation to the PVRA committee and residents, the RM of Ste Anne, businesses and individuals for their monetary donations. Thank you to the Richer Fellowship Church, Richer School and individuals for their non perishable food drive . Thanks goes out to Doreen Pchajek for organizing a fundraiser during the last six weeks on Bingo nights. Dr. Hein dental office for hygiene pacs and your support for a successful Christmas Basket drive. We would like to especially thank the following people for sharing their resources, time and talent: Special thanks to Anna, our knitter of toques, mitts and scarves for the Richer school children. Thanks to Mary Kehler for the beautiful knitted toques and scarves for the baskets. Thanks to Sandra Hebert for shopping for all the children' s gifts and Rachelle Laurin and Terri McKerchar who wrapped and distributed them in time for the special day. Our sincere and heartfelt thanks to all. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Welcome New Residents
PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Bill Holowec & Shirley Neufeld - 6 Village Drive - moved from Winnipeg to their new home on October 15, 2014. They are both absolutely happy to have made the move to beautiful Paradise Village. Now that they have moved here, they are closer to Shirley's mother who lives in Richer. That is probably one of the reasons they made the move. They both told me that it felt like living at the lake here; so many other people have said the same thing. They love the tranquility, the peaceful quiet atmosphere, and their friendly neighbors. At the present time, they are both still working, however Bill plans on retiring in the spring from his job as manufacturing engineer at New Flyer Industries. Shirley is in Accounts Receivable with Mariner Neptune and plans on working for awhile yet. She loves gardening, cooking, walking and cycling. Bill likes walking and cycling as well but his greatest interest is restoring cars. Between them, there are 6 children, 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. They have a beautiful big place, no problem to accommodate and entertain their family. Bill and Shirley, it was a pleasure to meet and greet you and I look forward to seeing you at the many functions that take place here in the Village.
Gordon and Joan Macpherson - 14 Sunset Drive - moved from Winnipeg to Paradise Village on November 20, 2014. Had a very enjoyable visit over a cup of coffee. They had been looking at moving to our community for some time now and both Gordon and Joan are very, very happy to finally find a beautiful home that they can enjoy. They made the move just when we had that cold snap so Joan still hasn't found her pots and pans or dishes; now that it has warmed up considerably, I'm sure they could go out into the garage and find all those missing items. Joan recently retired as an Administrative Assistant at a physiotherapy clinic, however Gordon is still hard at it as Executive Director at Electrical Association of Manitoba. They both love golfing and can hardly wait for the golf season to start. Joan also does some crafts, gardening and singing. Gordon can’t hardly wait for the pool to open and his other interests are the Internet, public speaking, and a very keen interest in current affairs. They have 2 children and 2 grandchildren. Again I would like to welcome you to our beautiful Paradise Village and look forward to seeing you at our meetings, the social functions, pot luck dinners and other activities offered here. It's a good time to meet some of the other residents living here.

Florida Calling: Hello folks from Ila and Brian Cooper in Zephyrhills, Florida. We’re keeping an eye on you from our TV satellite dish, tuning into the local 6 o’clock news every evening and watching the snow pile up. Meanwhile gas prices at the pump keep falling here..now as low as $2.39 US gallon..strawberries coming into season even though the weather has been a little cooler this winter. Just returned from an inexpensive and wildly successful Caribbean cruise with dear friends Carol and Fred Archambault to Jamaica and Haiti. The Xmas light displays at Busch Gardens in Tampa are breathtaking and the shirtsleeve crowds of families really get their money’s worth. We also met up with our new RV residents Charmine and Gordon Mills from Paradise Village.
So...Rec Centre open yet??

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Pharmacie Seine Ste-Anne 204-422-8226 170-142 avenue Central GERD – Gastroesophageal Reflux Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disease. GERD occurs when stomach acid or, occasionally, stomach content, flows back into your food pipe (esophagus). The backwash (reflux) irritates the lining of your esophagus and causes GERD. Both acid reflux and heartburn are common digestive conditions that many people experience from time to time. When these signs and symptoms occur at least twice each week or interfere with your daily life, or when your doctor can see damage to your esophagus, you may be diagnosed with GERD. Most people can manage the discomfort of GERD with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications. But some people with GERD may need stronger medications, or even surgery, to reduce symptoms GERD signs and symptoms include: •A burning sensation in your chest (heartburn), sometimes spreading to your throat, along with a sour taste in your mouth •Chest pain •Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) •Dry cough •Hoarseness or sore throat •Regurgitation of food or sour liquid (acid reflux) •Sensation of a lump in your throat When to see a doctor: Seek immediate medical attention if you experience chest pain, especially if you have other signs and symptoms, such as shortness of breath or jaw or arm pain. These may be signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Make an appointment with your doctor if you experience severe or frequent GERD symptoms. If you take over-the-counter medications for heartburn more than twice a week, see your doctor.
