June 2015 Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil This month I’d like to use this space so that our “Village Volunteer Card Sender, Shirlee Christensen,” could share a few words about an experience she had. “One of our residents’ telephoned me a couple of weeks ago to tell me that she was very upset that neither she nor her husband received a card on their birthdays. When I asked who was calling, she hung up on me. I do not have caller display so I was unable to get any more information. Believe it or not we do try our hardest to get things right - but mistakes do happen - SO PLEASE - if your name is not on the list or if the dates are wrong please phone me at 204-422-9501 or let Doreen know by phoning 204-422-8273 As your Editor, and fellow volunteer, I would like to confess my disappointment in people who feel disappointed when an occasion has been overlooked. There is always an explanation if you are willing to listen. It could be due to possible misinformation, mistakes, illness and/or those times when it went into one ear and out of the other. I know I have some days like that at least once a week. Doesn’t everyone?

From the Tab Man‌..Frank Leys A big thanks to Gail & Bruce Harrower, Tom Malazdrewicz, and Gordon Mills. I was able to donate $117.00 to the Wheelchair Program.
We could do better if the residents would separate the tabs from the cans as they are .10c more per lb. than the cans. We still collect all Campbell's food labels from soup and vegetables. They must be Campbell’s products. Drop them off along with your tabs and cans. Please place your tabs and cans and labels into a bin provided at the back of 7 Nature Drive 204-422-8273. Welcome New Residents
PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Denise DOBINSKY - 28 Sunset Drive - took possession of her new home on April 30th. Denise moved to our
beautiful Paradise Village from Neepawa and although she has only been here a short time, she is very happy to be amongst us. I had a very enjoyable, lengthy conversation with Denise over a cup of coffee. I went over all the information sheets with her and discussed different things that Denise wanted to know. In her younger years she taught the accordion, still has it, and I'm sure can be persuaded to come out on Mondays to jam with the rest of the jammers. Denise was a home care worker for a number of years and definitely deserves a peaceful retirement. She has one daughter and one grandson and a cute little poodle living with her. Her interests include cards, rummoli, bingo, walking, and of course, her accordion. Welcome to Paradise Village Denise and hopefully we will see you at some of the activities we talked about. It's a good place to meet some of the other residents that live here.
Henry & Barbara DERKSEN - 11 Parkview Drive moved to beautiful Paradise Village on April 27th from Steinbach. They chose to move here as they found it an attractive area to live in and also to be close to family. Had a most enjoyable visit with Henry and Barbara. They lived in the US for 12 years and returned to Canada in 2008 taking up residence in Steinbach where 2 of their 4 children lived with their families. To date Barbara had 18 books published, she is working on number 19. The books are sold primarily in the US but are available all over the world through Amazon. She writes mysteries, children's stories and devotionals. In the US she worked under contract as a journalist for 6 years with over 2500 articles published in newspapers and magazines. Henry has been singing and playing guitar since he was 13 years of age. His first CD of original gospel music was recorded in 2004 and since then he has recorded seven more. Henry is a member of Christian Country Music Association and lists his music with BMI. He and his wife, Barbara, are members of the Christian Motorcycle Association and ride in Canada and the US to minister at rallies, seniors homes and youth detention facilities. Henry is a retired mechanical engineer and besides his love of music and riding motorcycles, he now calls himself a jack of all trades. Barbara is still writing books, but also finds time to do some reading, swimming and riding motorcycles. They have been blessed with 11 grandchildren, which keep them very busy. Thank you again for the great visit. Welcome to Paradise Village and hope to see you at some of our functions where you can meet some of the other residents.
Gord & Jackie HERNER - 33 Village Drive - moved from Winnipeg Beach on May 1st. Jackie is patiently
waiting for the pool to re-open as she loves swimming and one of the reasons they chose to move here was because of the swimming pool. They also have some very good friends living here. Jackie is now retired but was an employment counselor at Human Resources. Gord is still employed as an agricultural inspector. They like the 55 plus lifestyle here knowing their home will be looked after when they go away for the winter. Jackie has many hobbies and interests, namely gardening, quilting, crafts, music, dancing, swimming, fishing camping and golfing. Gord also loves golfing, music, especially the drums and has a pilot's license. We learned a lot about each other on our visit. They are both very open and easy to talk to. They have 4 children and 10 grandchildren which keep them very busy. We hope to see you at our meetings, the social functions, pot luck dinners and other activities offered here in the Park. It's a good time to meet some of the other residents living here in our beautiful Paradise Village. Welcome Gord and Jackie
Ken & Sandra MACBAIN - moved to our beautiful Paradise Village on May 15th from Winnipeg to their new home on 23 Nature Drive. It was a beautiful evening when I welcomed Ken and Sandra, so we sat on their deck during the interview - and there weren't even any mosquitoes to bug us. Sandra;'s father also lives in the Park so they are quite familiar with the activities and events that take place here. They are both retired, Sandra was an ambulance dispatcher and Ken, after 37 years, retired from CP as Manager of Field Operations. They found it to be very friendly here and knowing that when they go away their home will be looked after. They both have the same interests - golfing, fishing and cycling. Both Ken and Sandra participate in road racing at the Gimli track and Sandra has been registrar for the Winnipeg Sports Car Club for many years. They have been fortunate enough to travel and race on tracks in the US and Alberta. Welcome to beautiful Paradise Village and hope to see you at some of the activities soon. You will get to meet more people. 9

A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for over 5 minutes. Finally, she hangs him. But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together. How can this be?
3.
What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and gray when you throw it away?
4.
Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Wednesday, Friday, or Sunday?

This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious as to just how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It looks so ordinary and plain that you would think nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is highly unusual though. Study it and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out. Try to do so without any coaching!
A RETIREE'S LAST TRIP TO COSTCO‌‌.. Yesterday I was at Costco buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Necco, the Wonder Dog, which weighs 191 lbs. I was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had an elephant? So because I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her no I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet, again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, and that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works is, you load your jacket pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stopped to Pee on a Fire Hydrant and a car hit me. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard. Costco won't let me shop there anymore. Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the World to think of crazy things to say. Forward this (especially) to all your retired friends...it will be their laugh for the day! A Newfie was terribly overweight, so the doctor put him on a diet. I want you to eat regularly for 2 days, then skip a day, then eat regularly again for 2 days then skip a day. Repeat this procedure for 2 weeks. The next time I see you, you should have lost at least 5 pounds." When the Newfie returned, he shocked the doctor by having lost nearly 60 lbs.! "That's amazing", the doctor said, "Did you follow my instructions?" The Newfie nodded. "I'll tell you though, bye jaesuz, I t'aut I were going to drop dead on dat 'tird day." "From the hunger, you mean?" asked the doctor. "No, from da friggin' skippin'."

Freezing Lemons - Who Knew? This may save your life or the life of a friend or loved one. The more you read, the more you want to know. It’s not long, so read it. It’s amazing! Amazing Frozen Lemons All it is......is a Frozen Lemon Many professionals in restaurants and eateries are using or consuming the entire lemon and nothing is wasted. How can you use the whole lemon without waste? Simple: place the washed lemon in the freezer section of your refrigerator. Once the lemon is frozen, get your grater, and shred the whole lemon (no need to peel it) and sprinkle it on top of your foods.
Sprinkle it on your vegetable salad, ice cream, soup, cereals, noodles, spaghetti sauce, rice, sushi, fish dishes, whisky.... the list is endless. All of the foods will unexpectedly have a wonderful taste, something that you may have never tasted before. Most likely, you only think of lemon juice and vitamin C. Not anymore. Now that you've learned this lemon secret, you can use lemon even in instant cup noodles.
Pet Sitting Services Call Marilyn 204-422-6290
What's the major advantage of using the whole lemon other than preventing waste and adding new taste to your dishes? Well, you see, lemon peels contain as much as 5 to 10 times more vitamins than the lemon juice itself. And yes, that's what you've been wasting. But from now on, by following this simple procedure of freezing the whole lemon, then grating it on top of your dishes, you can consume all of those nutrients and get even healthier. It's also good that lemon peels are health rejuvenators in eradicating toxic elements in the body. So, place your washed lemon in your freezer & then grate it on your meal every day. It is key to make your foods tastier and you get to live healthier and longer! That's the lemon secret! Better late than never, right? The surprising benefits of lemon! Continued on Page 31

June 2015 Dear Paradise Village Residents… Another season of enjoying the outdoors is here. It is time to plant the flowers, trim the hedges and seed the garden. We are all aware with this warm weather, standing water and outdoor enjoyment brings the all dreaded Mosquitoes. If you are like myself, I HATE MOSQUITOES. There is nothing like trying to relax indoors after a long day of enjoying the outdoors and scratching, scratching and more scratching. How do these pesky mosquitoes bite you in the areas that you thought were all covered up. They are like flying ninjas. When my family and I moved out of town, we were very excited to have a yard the kids could play in. They were able to run around and throw the ball for our dog. After the first day, my younger daughter came in and I could not believe it. It looked like she had chicken pocks, mosquito bites everywhere. That was it. We moved out of town to enjoy the outdoors and get a bigger yard for the family. These mosquitoes were not going to ruin it for us. I searched online looking for a solution to our problem. I found one, tried it and we have never looked back since. People say you can’t enjoy the outdoors after sunset. I beg to differ now. After the perimeter application of Nutrilawn’s mosquito control product, we are able to be outside and not worry about those flying ninjas carrying away my kids. We are outside all day and even into the evening. My dog will now stay outside and lay on the deck until we call him in for bedtime. We are not fighting to close the door quickly so those mosquitoes don’t come in. And one of the biggest issues I have with those flying ninjas is the West Nile Virus they could potentially carry. More and more cases are coming up, it will soon be a very common issue. We are guaranteed to have Mosquitoes and your risk of contracting the West Nile Virus from these carriers is higher when you’re living out of town in heavily treed areas. Let us show you how and why we are able to enjoy the outdoors. Day time or night time. Mosquitoes are territorial and keeping them out of your territory is key. Nutri-lawn’s Mosquito Control has 2 options. One is a man-made product and the other is an all-natural product. Nutri-lawn’s Mosquito Control Program delivers a season long barrier around you home and property. One, two or three applications are available and each application lasts 4-6 weeks depending on weather. Our three application program deliverers the Season Long Protection and is the best value.

Little Ronnie’s Kindergarten Class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person? “Yes,” said the policeman. “The detectives want very badly to capture him.” Little Ronnie asked. “Why didn’t you keep him when you took his picture?”

VINEGAR [acetic acid] can clean you, the dog, the car and your home. It disinfects, deodorizes and de-gunks just about everything. It can wipeout the infectious invaders-bacteria and fungi. When spread on skin or used as a hair rinse, it removes soap and shampoo residues. It also reduces dandruff and scalp itch. Mix equal parts vinegar and rubbing alcohol to cure swimmer's ear. Treat athlete's foot by soaking feet in vinegar. Relieve sore throats by gargling with 1 tbsp vinegar in a glass of warm water. A combination of acetic acid [vinegar] and salicylic acid creates acetylsalicylic acid better known as aspirin.
CLEANING CLOTHES, FABRICS, AND UPHOLSTERY 1) If a child has an "accident" on a mattress, clean with a solution of equal parts vinegar and water. Then pour a liberal amount of baking soda over the spot. When dry, vacuum the residual. 2) Spray vinegar on deodorant stains on shirts before washing. It also works on mustard, ketchup and tomato stains. 3) Add a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle when washing clothes. Vinegar dissolves soap residue that can dull dark and coloured clothes. It will also act as a fabric softener, a static reducer and will eliminate body odors trapped in fabrics. 4) Vinegar loosens chewing gum stuck to fabrics, rugs and hair.
OUTDOOR SOLUTIONS 1) Remove bumper stickers by saturating with vinegar for a few hours this may require repeat treatments 2) Wipe car windows with a mixture of 3:1 vinegar to water to keep them frost free. 3) Kill weeds on the sidewalk or Driveway with full strength vinegar.
KITCHEN REMEDIES
HOUSE CLEANING 1) Clean and deodorize garbage disposals and drains with equal parts vinegar and baking soda. Let this fizzing mixture sit in the drain for ten minutes and flush with warm water 2) Remove caked on food and rid the microwave of odors with a bowl of vinegar and water boiled in microwave. 3) Clean grout with vinegar and a toothbrush. 4) Remove hard water residue from cutlery and glasses by wrapping with paper towels and soaking in vinegar for 30 minutes. 5) Vinegar and a soft cloth cleans dirty or slightly scuffed DVD's. 6) Remove water condensation marks from wood with equal parts vinegar and vegetable oil. Be sure to rub with the grain of the wood.
PET PROTECTION 1) Relieve itchy ears with a mixture of vinegar and water. 2) Cats hate vinegar-- soak a sponge in vinegar to keep them away. If a cat has “marked "a spot, spray the area with vinegar to eliminate the smell and deter recurrences. 3) Vinegar also eliminates skunk odor! Soak in a solution of 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water. Rinse with clear water.
1) Add a few drops of vinegar in the water when poaching eggs to help the whites stay formed and when boiling eggs vinegar prevents the whites from leaking out of cracked shells 2) Perk up wilted leafy veggies by soaking in cold water with a little vinegar added. 3) Eliminate onion and garlic odors from your hands with a vinegar rinse. 4) Adding vinegar to the cooking water of broccoli, cauliflower and beans can reduce the gassiness they can cause. 5) Soak store bought berries in cold water with about 1/4 cup vinegar for about 15 mins then drain and air dry do not rinse. This kills the fungi and /or bacteria resulting in longer-lasting freshness and you won't have a vinegar taste. 24

Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church
Everyday I will bless you; and everyday I will praise thy name forever and ever Psalm 145:2 As creatures of habit, we may find ourselves praising God only at particular times of the day or the week. Instead, we should praise God all day, everyday, as much as we can. Worship and praise should be woven into everything we do, with thanksgiving in our hearts, and a song on our lips. Today can we find a little more time to lift our prayers to God and thank Him for all He has done. His love endures forever.
Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the LUD Hall in Richer. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. We will continue to have Church Services in Richer until we receive an official date on when we can return to the Paradise Village Recreation Center; which will re-open on June 4th, at 10:00 am. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Heather Burnell or Vice President, Dennis Hall.
MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870. LADIES Outing and Lunch Fellowship: takes place each month and all ladies are welcome to come for a time of great fellowship at various places...Rides can be arranged. This event took place at Larry Menec’s home. Again we gathered and again we feasted. As I have often stated, it just gets better and better. Thanks Larry for hosting. Birthdays were celebrated with luscious carrot cake (Olga baked this one!) It was Les and Darlene who are glad they are older this month. No one dare speak about how many candles anymore as long as there are a few to extinguish.

It was good to see Val Mallen back once more. She seems happy in her new home.

We are all looking forward to our annual BBQ at the home of Les Hooper. Burgers and smokies will be provided. Larry will be calling members regarding choices for the pot luck. Mark this date: Monday, June 1st 5:00 pm BBQ 12 Harmony Lane
Hope to see you there!
Carol Stoess, looking good!
Garbage vs. Recycling Please do not put garbage with the recycling. The R.M. is looking into ways of stopping this practise, up to and including fines, if anyone is caught. It may or may not be residents of our Paradise Village, but it certainly is someone from this area that continually places garbage with the recycling. We here in the village have a very efficient garbage removal system and there is no need to take garbage to the recycling area. You can help if you notice someone doing this by letting him or her know that this is not the area to place garbage at any time. 29

Lemon (Citrus) is a miraculous product to kill cancer cells. It is 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy. Why do we not know about that? Because there are laboratories interested in making a synthetic version that will bring them huge profits. You can now help a friend in need by letting him/her know that lemon juice is beneficial in preventing the disease. Its taste is pleasant and it does not produce the horrific effects of chemotherapy. How many people will die while this closely guarded secret is kept, so as not to jeopardize the beneficial multimillionaires large corporations? As you know, the lemon tree is known for its varieties of lemons and limes. You can eat the fruit in different ways: you can eat the pulp, juice press, prepare drinks, sorbets, pastries, etc... It is credited with many virtues, but the most interesting is the effect it produces on cysts and tumors. This plant is a proven remedy against cancers of all types. Some say it is very useful in all variants of cancer. It is considered also as an anti-microbial spectrum against bacterial infections and fungi, effective against internal parasites and worms, it regulates blood pressure which is too high and an antidepressant, combats stress and nervous disorders. The source of this information is fascinating: it comes from one of the largest drug manufacturers in the world, says that after more than 20 laboratory tests since 1970, the extracts revealed that it destroys the malignant cells in 12 cancers, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreas. The compounds of this tree showed 10,000 times better than the product Adriamycin, a drug normally used chemotherapeutic in the world, slowing the growth of cancer cells. And what is even more astonishing: this type of therapy with lemon extract only destroys malignant cancer cells and it does not affect healthy cells. So, give those lemons a good wash, freeze 'em & grate 'em. Your whole body will love you for it!!!!! 31

Melanoma Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, develops in the cells (melanocytes) that produce melanin the pigment that gives your skin its color. Melanoma can also form in your eyes and, rarely, in internal organs, such as your intestines. The exact cause of all melanomas isn't clear, but exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight or tanning lamps and beds increases your risk of developing melanoma. Limiting your exposure to UV radiation can help reduce your risk of melanoma. The risk of melanoma seems to be increasing in people under 40, especially women. Knowing the warning signs of skin cancer can help ensure that cancerous changes are detected and treated before the cancer has spread. Melanoma can be treated successfully if it is detected early. Melanomas can develop anywhere on your body. They most often develop in areas that have had exposure to the sun, such as your back, legs, arms and face. Melanomas can also occur in areas that don't receive much sun exposure, such as the soles of your feet, palms of your hands and fingernail beds. These hidden melanomas are more common in people with darker skin. The first melanoma signs and symptoms often are: •
A change in an existing mole
•
The development of a new pigmented or unusual-looking growth on your skin
Melanoma doesn't always begin as a mole. It can also occur on otherwise normal-appearing skin.
Normal moles - Normal moles are generally a uniform color — such as tan, brown or black — with a distinct border separating the mole from your surrounding skin. They're oval or round and usually smaller than 1/4 inch (about 6 millimeters) in diameter — the size of a pencil eraser. Most people have between 10 and 45 moles. Many of these develop by age 40, although moles may change in appearance over time — some may even disappear with age.
32
PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
To help you identify characteristics of unusual moles that may indicate melanomas or other skin cancers, think of the letters ABCDE: •
A is for asymmetrical shape. Look for moles with irregular shapes, such as two very differentlooking halves.
•
B is for irregular border. Look for moles with irregular, notched or scalloped borders — characteristics of melanomas.
•
C is for changes in color. Look for growths that have many colors or an uneven distribution of color.
•
D is for diameter. Look for new growth in a mole larger than 1/4 inch (about 6 millimeters).
•
E is for evolving.
Other suspicious changes in a mole may include: •
Itching
•
Oozing or bleeding
Cancerous (malignant) moles vary greatly in appearance. Some may show all of the changes listed above, while others may have only one or two unusual characteristics. Hidden Melanomas Melanomas can also develop in areas of your body that have little or no exposure to the sun, such as the spaces between your toes and on your palms, soles, scalp or genitals. These are sometimes referred to as hidden melanomas because they occur in places most people wouldn't think to check. When melanoma occurs in people with darker skin, it's more likely to occur in a hidden area. Hidden melanomas include: Unusual moles that may indicate melanoma •
Melanoma under a nail. Acral lentiginous melanoma is a rare form of melanoma that can occur under a fingernail or toenail. It can also be found on the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet. It's more common in blacks and in other people with darker skin pigment.
•
Melanoma in the mouth, digestive tract, urinary tract or vagina. Mucosal melanoma develops in the mucous membrane that lines the nose, mouth, esophagus, anus, urinary tract and vagina. Mucosal melanomas are especially difficult to detect because they can easily be mistaken for other far more common conditions.
•
Melanoma in the eye. Eye melanoma, also called ocular melanoma, most often occurs in the uvea — the layer beneath the white of the eye (sclera). An eye melanoma may cause vision changes and may be diagnosed during an eye exam.
When to See a Doctor Make an appointment with your doctor if you notice any skin changes that seem unusual.

June 2015 Sudoku #207 (Medium) June 2015 Answer on Page 38 The history of Sudoku dates back to an 18th Century Swiss mathematician’s game called “Latin Squares” (according to this article from the Economist) and some of the first number puzzles to appear in newspapers were published in France in 1895. But the modern game of Sudoku as we recognize it today was invented by Howard Garns, a freelance puzzle inventor from Connersville, Indiana, USA in 1979 when it was published in Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games magazine. The puzzle was known as “Number Place,” since it involved placing individual numbers into empty spots on a 9 x 9 grid. The game first appeared in Japan in 1984 where it was given the name “Sudoku,” which is short for a longer expression in Japanese – “Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru” – which means, “the digits are limited to one occurrence.” Sudoku continues to be highly popular in Japan, where people buy over 600,000 Sudoku magazines per month. One reason that Sudoku puzzles are so beloved in Japan is because the Japanese language doesn’t work very well for crossword puzzles – so a number puzzle was much more successful in Japanese culture. Also, Japan tends to love puzzles, since it is a country where millions of people make lengthy commutes by train or bus, and they need to kill time while waiting for the next stop. The man who reintroduced Sudoku “back” to the Western world was a New Zealand judge named Wayne Gould, who was on vacation in Tokyo in March 1997 when he discovered Sudoku in a bookstore. He quickly became a devoted enthusiast of Sudoku and spent the next six years developing a computer program that could generate Sudoku puzzles. The Times of London began publishing Sudoku puzzles in 2004, and the first U.S. newspaper to feature Sudoku was The Conway (New Hampshire) Daily Sun in 2004. Within the past 12 years, Sudoku has become a global phenomenon. The first World Sudoku Championship was hosted in Italy in 2006 and the 2013 World Sudoku Championship was held in Beijing. Why does Sudoku speak to us in today’s fast-paced world? One possible reason is that it appeals to people’s innate sense of order; there is something very satisfying about filling out those empty squares on the Sudoku grid. Another reason is that the rules are simple and easy to learn – people of all ages can play Sudoku and can often learn quickly how to approach the puzzle. As Sudoku’s global popularity attests, the game is easy to share with friends all over the world, because it is numbers-based and so it does not require any translation. As long as people love to test their brains with the fun and challenge of logic puzzles, Sudoku will be a popular and beloved part of millions of people’s everyday lives around the world. 34
