PVRA Newsletter July 2015

July 2015 Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil There was a statement made at the General Meeting about the lease not being a valid lease. As per the (RTB) Residential Tenancy Branch @ http://www.gov.mb.ca/cca/rtb/download.html The Standard Residential Tenancy Agreement (Mobile Homes and Sites) Form 2 (Updated – effective August 1, 2014) - Landlords must use this form, or a form of their own that contains all of the prescribed information, at the beginning of a tenancy. I encourage all residents to become familiar with this website and know your rights as a tenant. The recent letter and rent increase form from Paradise Management is within their rights to use and ask for. They have applied for this increase and have provided information to the RTB showing reasons why the increase is necessary. They are yet to be approved. They have given us 90 days notice and we have 60 days to appeal this rent increase by sending in a written request. Paradise Management has informed our new President, Brian Vanderbeek, that they want to hear from us regarding any issue we may have, before going to the RTB. It is a good idea to follow the chain of command, so to speak, and let Justin and Jill know how you feel about issues such as rent increase, roads, hours of operation regarding the Rec Center, tree cutting, water breaks, etc. You may do this in person or by mail. Always document any conversation or communication. Let’s stop gossiping, accusing, and insinuating. Let’s be positive, respectful, and professional. Let’s move forward. You get more bees with honey than vinegar!

Riddle for seniors....Here is the situation: You are on a horse, galloping at a constant speed. On your right side is a sharp drop-off. On your left side is an elephant traveling at the same speed as you. Directly in front of you is a galloping kangaroo and your horse is unable to overtake it. Behind you is a lion running at the same speed as you and the kangaroo. What must you do to get out of this highly dangerous situation ?

Get your drunken arse off the merry-go-round and go home! 7

Welcome New Residents

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Ray & Rita McAdam - moved to our beautiful Paradise Village on May 4, 2015 from Gimli to their new home at 22 Sunset Drive. They revealed to me the reason they moved here was Paradise Village had all the facilities they were looking for like nowhere else in the entire Province of Manitoba. The community is designed for seniors who would like to enjoy a maintenance free lifestyle while not sacrificing their own private home, garden, yard and family pet. They also found it very friendly, enjoyed all the trees and birds and a good place to walk your dog. Ray was with the Scotia Bank for 32 years and Rita was an administrative assistant before retiring. Her interests include quilting, clogging, and cooking; while Ray loves golfing and music (guitar playing and singing). They have 4 children and 5 grandchildren. Discussed all the activities offered here which are quite similar to the ones offered to them in the winter. Ray and Rita, by choosing Paradise Village you will be taking advantage of the opportunity to fulfill your desire for an active, interesting and independent lifestyle in Manitoba's beautiful countryside. Hope to see you at our meetings, social functions, pot luck dinners and other activities offered here. It's a good time to meet some of the other residents living here and again we welcome you to Paradise Village and know you will enjoy your stay here. Cameron & Paulette Barley - took possession of their new home at 01 Sunset Drive on May 15, 2015. They are in the process of selling their home in Ste. Genevieve and are slowly moving to our beautiful and peaceful Paradise Village. Both Cameron and Paulette are very friendly and will fit into our community very nicely. They were impressed with the design of the park and happy to know that when they go away in the winter, their home will be well looked after. Paulette has been busy bringing her perennials from Ste. Genevieve and transplanting them in her flower gardens here. Had a great visit with them, outlining the different activities and events offered here and reminding them of the next event to take place - that being Canada Day celebrations. That's always a fun event and a good place to meet other residents. Paulette was in the banking business with CIBC and Cameron is a salesman, still working 2 or 3 days a week. They have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Paulette is a very talented person - she's an artist, does all sorts of crafts, carves, sews, and loves to fish and travel. Cameron would only say that he's a jack-of-all trades. Welcome to Paradise Village and hope to see you at some of the functions in the near future. Victor & Erna Krahn - 12 Nature Drive - moved from Minaki, Ontario to Paradise Village on May 26, 2015. Had a very pleasant conversation with them. They were originally from Manitoba and decided to move back to be just a little closer to family. Erna said their real estate agent suggested they move here and felt they would be very happy here. They have only been here a short time but find the atmosphere is great - very friendly, everyone waves at you whether they know you or not and it is very peaceful. Erna enjoys the swimming pool at the Rec Center. One of the beauties of living here is that you can be as active as you choose to be. There are a variety of activities and events offered here and I discussed all of this with them. Erna was an accountant with K-Tel before retirement and Victor was self-employed. Erna loves swimming and does a bit of walking and reading. Victor does some reading and of course fished when they lived at the lake. They have 3 children and 3 grandchildren that also keeps them busy. Welcome to beautiful Paradise Village, Victor and Erna and hope to see you at the General Meeting on June 22nd where I'm sure you will meet lots of other residents. Donald Schan - 7 Sunset Drive - moved from Bird's Hill to Paradise Village on June 1, 2015. Don is still very busy sorting and arranging things in his garage. Had a very enjoyable visit with Don and during our conversation he told me he has been looking for a quiet retreat and has found it at Paradise Village. He finds it very peaceful and friendly. He enjoys all the trees and the many different types of birds. He uses the pool every evening and has met a lot of people there. Even though he's only been here a short time, you can tell he`s happy with the choice he has made. Don is still actively employed as an icemaker in the Oakbank area. Prior to this he was self employed for over 20 years in the janitorial business. We talked about all the activities and events offered here. Don's main interests are travelling, fishing and snowmobiling. Welcome to beautiful Paradise Village and hope to see you at some of the activities soon and also the General Meetings which are held every other month.

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Lawyers should never ask a Georgia grandma a question if they aren't prepared for the answer. In a trial, a Southern small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand. He approached her and asked, 'Mrs. Jones, do you know me?' She responded, 'Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you'll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.' The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, 'Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?' She again replied, 'Why yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone, and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him.' The defense attorney nearly died. The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, said, 'If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I'll send you both to the electric chair.

Three couples from Paradise Squares attended the Wasagaming Summer Squares weekend dance in Onanole, MB on June 12th & 13th. Dancers were from Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. This popular June weekend dance will celebrate its 25th consecutive year in 2016. It was a great weekend! Ernie & Shirley Hollender, our caller couple, will host their annual summer dance and BBQ on the afternoon of July 26th. Paradise Squares startup will be September 15th at the Rec. Hall. PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

The American robin (Turdus migratorius) is a migratory songbird of the thrush family. It is named after the European robin because of its reddish-orange breast, though the two species are not closely related, with the European robin belonging to the Old World Flycatcher family. The American robin is widely distributed throughout North America, wintering from southern Canada to central Mexico and along the Pacific Coast The American robin is active mostly during the day and assembles in large flocks at night. Its diet consists of invertebrates (such as beetle grubs, earthworms, and caterpillars), fruits, and berries. It is one of the earliest bird species to lay eggs.

Sudoku - July 2015

It is among the first birds to sing at dawn, and its song consists of several discrete units that are repeated.

Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church On a grand stage of a well lived life, material possessions should play a small role. We all need the basic necessities of life, but once we meet those needs the piling up of possessions creates more problems then it solves. We are never really rich until we are rich in spirit. It is time to begin storing up riches that will endure though-out eternity: the spiritual kind. A pretentious, showy life is an empty life: a plain and simple life is a full life. Proverbs 13:7

Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the Acting President, Dennis Hall.

1. Massage Reduces Anxiety and Stress It’s said that the vast majority of diseases and their complications are brought on by anxiety and stress. Massage has been proven to lower cortisol levels in the body while increasing levels of serotonin and dopamine, thus helping to alleviate the stress we suffer from day to day, and promoting perspective and clarity. 2. Massage Addresses Low Back Pain Massage addresses a number of musculoskeletal issues, but let’s single out the leading cause of disability in the U.S. (according to the Global Burden of Disease 2010). A 2011 study found that regular massage to the lower back can help alleviate pain, and it didn’t even matter whether it was deep tissue or lighter Swedish massage – bodywork in general to the low back is helpful. 3. Massage Enhances Immunity

34069-B Borland Rd La Broquerie, MB R0A 0W0

Swedish and deep tissue massage promotes the movement of lymph, the body’s natural defense system. 4. Massage Reduces the Effects of Long Hours of Desk-Sitting and Driving The most common responses I get when I ask clients what causes them the most pain are these two things. The average worker sits 8-9 hour a day either at a computer or behind the wheel, causing shoulders to become pulled forward and rounded, upper and lower back muscles to become overstretched and weak, and that’s just what happens to the upper half of your body. Coupled with a regular exercise routine, massage can help alleviate pain, and keep those postural deviations in check. 30

Pharmacie Seine Ste-Anne 204-422-8226 170-142 avenue Centrale A reminder that we offer free delivery of prescriptions and pharmacy supplies to Paradise Village.

Lyme Disease Lyme disease is an infection caused by a kind of bacterium (germ) called a spirochete (say: spy-ro-keet). The disease is carried by deer ticks (found in the northeastern and north-central United States) and western black-legged ticks (found mostly on the Pacific Coast). These ticks can spread the disease to animals and humans through tick bites. These ticks are typically about the size of a sesame seed. One sign of Lyme disease is a rash, which may appear 3 to 30 days after the tick bite. This rash usually starts at the site of the tick bite. It may begin as a small red spot and grow larger. The center may fade, creating a "bull's eye" or ring appearance, but this is not always the case. Some people with Lyme disease have many red spots. The rash may be tender or feel warm to the touch. Other symptoms of Lyme disease in its early stage include: Fever, Chills, Headache, Fatigue, Joint & Muscle aches. Rarely, early-stage Lyme disease can spread to the heart or the nervous system. If Lyme disease spreads to the heart, the person may feel an irregular or slow heartbeat. The spread of Lyme disease to the nervous system can cause the face to droop (a condition called Bell's palsy), numbness in your arms and legs or swelling of the membranes surrounding the brain (called meningitis). If Lyme disease isn't treated, it can spread to other parts of the body. The symptoms of late-stage Lyme disease include arthritis (painful, swollen joints) and nervous system problems. Lyme arthritis often affects only one of the large joints, such as the knee. Sometimes it may affect more than one joint. Although rare, the symptoms of the nervous system disorder caused by late-stage Lyme disease may include: Trouble concentrating, Changes in mood, Changes in sleep habits, Loss of memory, Muscle weakness. What do I do if I find a tick on my skin? Don't panic. Using a pair of fine-tipped tweezers, grasp the tick body as close to your skin as possible. Pull in a steady upward motion until the tick comes out. Be careful not to squeeze or twist the tick body. If any tick parts remain in the skin, you can leave them alone or carefully remove them the same way you would a splinter. Then apply an antiseptic to the bite area and wash your hands with soap and water. After the tick is removed, call your doctor and report the tick bite. Your doctor may have you bring the tick in so he/she can identify it and estimate how long it may have been attached to your skin. Watch the bite area and the rest of your skin over the few months. If you get a rash, see your doctor. Be sure to tell your doctor that you were bitten by a tick and when it happened.

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Susan Vanderwerf‌... Throughout her life Susan Vanderwerf has experienced the occupation of her country by the German military during World War 2, the trauma of leaving her family and homeland at age 18, and adapting to a new life in Canada. Susan was born in Holland in the 1930s and, although very young during the war years, can remember food shortages so severe that some people were reduced to eating tulip bulbs. School was not an option as most of the schools were converted to living quarters for the German military and, being the oldest child, Susan was needed at home. Her father was forced into labour but escaped and hid in their home. As the war ended there was a special bond formed with the arriving Canadian soldiers, some of whom returned to Canada with a Dutch bride. Susan began work at a lingerie boutique at age 15. She recalls the best customers being the prostitutes. It was shortly after beginning work that she met Frank, her future husband. There were severe shortages in post-war Holland. You had to be married with 2 children to qualify for a house. Frank left Holland in 1953 and found employment as a baker in Yorkton, SK. Susan left for Canada a year later. She was 18 years old and found it very difficult to say goodbye to her parents and younger siblings. Never having seen an airplane she left Holland with "one suitcase, 45 dollars and lots of guts". After the flight to Montreal she eventually reached Yorkton by train and was reunited with Frank. The Canadian government required that she be married within one month after her arrival. They were married 30 days later. Their first child was born in 1956. They decided to move to Winnipeg the following year and settled in the Point Douglas area. Frank found employment as a baker. Susan and Frank were able to return to Holland for a visit in 1959. They found that there were many post-war restrictions and were happy to return to Canada. While in Holland Frank was called back into the Dutch army and had to show his airline ticket to prove that he was returning to Canada. As the family grew Susan and Frank decided to purchase their first home, on Seven Oaks Avenue. There were many highlights - trips to Holland, return visits by Dutch family, the birth of their children and the purchase of a cottage at Granite Lake. Frank retired from Safeway in 1993. They later moved to Paradise Village. The information in this article is based on an autobiographical book written by Susan and left as a wonderful legacy for her children. Submitted by Larry Menec
