May 2015 Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil As most of you know I am a Library Technician in the Ste. Anne English Schools. I would like to share a writing assignment given to one of our Grade 6 students. I believe you will enjoy this as much as I did. Our youth are very bright and need to be acknowledged as often as possible. Thank you Emily Thrun for sharing.
Dear Duncan, Hello it’s me, White crayon, you must have forgot about me since you NEVER use me, but anyways I’m writing this depressing letter because I loathe the way you treat me.
To tell you the truth, I have always been this pseudo sophisticated crayon all my life, and well let’s just say, ever since you bought me from the craft section at Dollarama. Sometimes I feel well forgotten, and sometimes embarrassed. The only things you use me for are TOTALLY LAME like, clouds in the windy skies, cute baby polar bears, fast arctic hares and most of all boring snowmen. I’ve always had to put up with the same BORING things all my crayon life. I’m getting very sick of it. Besides you can’t even see your fantastic drawings. Let me give you a hint…..USE COLOURED PAPER!!! Your very humiliated friend, White crayon

The Desert and the Jeep Ride You don't have to travel far out of the city to see miles and miles of sand dunes and desert waste land. We took a tour bus out to a staging area for a jeep ride over the dunes. Well it was some ride!! We were dropped off to an assembly area where we noticed a group men letting the air out of tires on several jeeps. The intent? To give more traction in the sand. The vehicles were chauffeured by drivers from Pakistan (who had been trained to terrify tourists, I am sure!) So, we innocently, piled into the jeeps that held 5 plus the driver. In no time we were charging up and down the dunes and being tossed left and right in our seats (no seats belts.) We would climb to the top of a high dune not knowing if we would make it only to speed down the other side. Sand flew everywhere and the driver had to use the windshield wipers at times. The whole hair raising event lasted for about 15 minutes until we finally reached our destination. It was a Bedouin Encampment. Now this was more like it. They served us cold beer, some interesting foods, lots of dates and even offered camel rides. We were then seated on pillows surrounding a large square canvas “floor” on the sand. A belly dancer appeared and we were treated to a fascinating display. Having just witnessed a spectacular desert sunset, we were all wondering about the ride back in the dark!! All the driver could say, was, “Different way, different way”. Could that be worse or what? As it turned out we were close to a long fence and a straight path on smooth sand with no dunes.
A wild jeep ride through the dunes
Bedouins offered fresh dates
It was truly a wild ride but we wouldn't have wanted to miss it!
The Heritage Village This village provides a glimpse of Dubai’s traditional culture and lifestyle prior to the sixties. Typical living quarters have been set up including the rugs and cushion furnishings. The venue offers various artisans opportunity to display their work. Local foods can be sampled also. We tried Shawarma, a medley of various meats grilled together on a vertical spit. It was served on a pita or flatbread. Condiments such as hummus or amba (mango pickle) were then added. Delicious!
Falconer with his bird
Nearby, we spied a Falcon chained and tethered. His handler watched us, warily. Falconry is the sport of hunting wild game using trained birds of prey. It is very popular in the UAE. Dubai even houses the Falcon Heritage and Sports Centre. Here, there is a Veterinary Clinic and a Souk where you can buy the latest accessories for your feathered friend. Tours are available for you where you actually go out hunting with Falconers and try your luck. Next time, perhaps.

Camel Farm Visit It was quite a site with dozens of camels of all ages and sizes in compounds. Here, we the tourists could lean over and feed them green shrubbery. There are two types of camels. These were dromedary, an Arabian type with one hump. (The Asian camel has two.) The camel still has an important role in UAE society with many Bedouin families owning camels that provide milk and are sacrificed during festivals. Camel skin is used locally to make shoes, bags, and water containers. The wool, which is considered high quality, is commonly used for tent and rug making besides being fashioned into clothing.
Camel Racing
Feeding the Camels
Now a days the camel is essentially used for racing that is held annually during the winter months. The camels were once ridden by child jockeys but allegations of human rights abuses have led to nationwide bans on underage labour in the UAE and Qatar. Hence robotic jockeys. They are about 1 foot high and mounted on the back of the animal’s hump. They are controlled by trainers who are being driven in 4 x 4’s alongside the track. The trainers press the whip button as needed. Camels can run at speeds of up to 65 km/h (40 mph) in short sprints and they can maintain a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) for an hour. Oh, yes, betting takes place of course.
Enjoying his Lunch Racing Camels Controlled by Robots This has been only a brief glimpse of Dubai. If you plan to visit, there are many more remarkable sights including; the Dubai Mall, with an indoor ski hill, the magnificent Jumeirah Golf Estates, the Dubai Fountain, and lovely beaches. I would recommend a three day stay at least. Also, plan to include a side trip to the capital of the Emeritus, Abu Dhabi. JOY

The Golden Retriever's kindly expression says it all. This is one of the finest family dogs in the world: cheerful, demonstrative, trustworthy with everyone, and forgiving of any mistakes made by inexperienced owners. Give this breed two brisk walks each day, play fetch games, and take him out for a good run once a week, and he is adaptable to almost any lifestyle. Friendly with everyone (strangers, children, dogs, cats, smaller pets), his bark is welcoming rather than protective. You must control his tendency to chew on objects and to mouth your hands -- provide a box filled with toys so he can carry things around in his mouth. A Golden Retriever remains enthusiastically puppy-like for many years, so early obedience training is required to instill calmness and good manners. Eager to please and wonderfully responsive, he is nonetheless distracted by exciting sights and sounds, so you must be both patient and persistent. The mind and heart of a Golden Retriever is sweet and gentle, but his body is robust -- until he's taught not to pull on the leash, you'll need good biceps to walk him.

Submitted by Barb Prior Bacterial and viral infections have many things in common. Both are microbes that can cause mild, moderate or severe diseases. Both are spread in the same ways. Airborne - coughing and sneezing Contaminated surfaces hands, doorknobs, playing cards, cutting boards, etc. Contaminated food or water Contact with contaminated bodily fluids such as blood, saliva and semen.
Acute infections are short lived lasting from 24hrs to one week. Chronic infections can last for weeks, months or a lifetime. Latent infections do not show symptoms at first but reactivate months or years later. Symptoms of both bacteria and viruses include coughing, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, fever and inflammation. These symptoms are the immune systems attempts to rid the body of the infectious organism. Where bacterial and viral infections differ are in their structure and response to medication. Bacteria are capable of multiplying by their selves and exist everywhere inside and outside our bodies. Most are completely harmless and some are beneficial such as bacteria in our digestive system which helps to digest food and provide essential nutrients. Bacteria also helps to fight cancer cells and destroys disease carrying microbes. Less than 1% of bacteria cause diseases in people. Problems occur when it invades the wrong place in our bodies. Fossilized records show that bacteria has existed for about 3.5 Billion years. It survives extreme heat and cold and even has been found in radioactive waste. Examples of bacterial diseases include Staphylococcus aureus which causes boils, abscesses, wound infections, and pneumonia. Streptococcal bacteria causes strep throat.ear infections, meningitis, pneumonia and flesh-eating disease. Food poisoning, gastritis and ulcers. Life threatening diseases such as blood poisoning, kidney failure, and toxic shock syndrome. Viruses can't multiply on their own, so they invade a "host" cell and takes over its functioning in order to produce more viral particles. Respiratory passages are particularly open to viral attacks because they lack the protection of skin coverage. Unlike bacteria, most viruses do cause disease and are quite specific about which cells they attack. Diagnosis: If you suspect you have a bacterial or viral infection {except the common cold} you should consult your doctor. Some infections such as pneumonia, meningitis and diarrhea can be either bacterial or viral and require physical examination, blood tests or culture of affected tissue. Who Knew‌‌.Home Remedies: Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 tablespoon horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil for instant relief for aching muscles. Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria. 18
PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
They will also attack the "good" bacteria in the body. Examples of viral infections include measles, mumps, chicken pox, influenza, common colds, gastritis, rabies, hepatitis A &C, smallpox, HIV/AIDS, and Ebola Treatment: The discovery of antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial infections has been one of the most important breakthroughs in medical history. Unfortunately, bacteria are very adaptable and the overuse of antibiotics and antibacterial cleaning supplies has made many of the bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses and should not be used unless there is clear evidence of bacterial infection. Since the beginning of the 20th century vaccines have been developed and used to drastically reduce the number of new cases of viral diseases such as polio, measles, mumps, and smallpox to name a few. Vaccines are available yearly for seasonal influenza protection. Prevention: Most viruses remain alive for about 1hr either as airborne particles or on hard surfaces. Wash your hands regularly and immediately after handling potentially contaminated objects, or commonly shared items such as doorknobs, shopping carts or playing cards. Hand washing should be with soap and warm water over 15-20 seconds about the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday. If you think your hands may be contaminated avoid shaking hands or touching your face. Food should be cooked or cooled down as quickly as possible after purchase. Meats and vegetables need to be stored and prepared separately. Contaminated food doesn't necessarily smell bad. IF IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT. Knowing the differences between bacterial and viral infections may help you to decide when to see a doctor Location
Bacteria are usually site specific such as sinuses, throat or chest Viral illnesses cause widespread symptoms Phlegm Bacteria typically cause coloured phlegm - green, yellow, bloody or brown tinged Virus produce clear to cloudy mucous if any
Duration
Bacterial infections usually last longer than 10 days Viral infections usually last 2-10 days
Fever
Viral infections may or may not cause fever Bacterial infections are notoriously known to cause fever

May 2015
Dear Paradise Village Residents...
Spring is here and it is time to start thinking about your lawn. I am sure most of you have heard about the Cosmetic Pesticide Ban that is in place for all of Manitoba. Please give me a few minutes to explain how this will affect and change your lawn care decisions and give you some information on achieving and maintaining a beautiful, healthy lawn. What the Cosmetic Pesticide Ban means is no more “chemical” weed control. It will no longer be available at the stores to buy and lawn care companies are no longer able to use it. It is a new culture of lawn care and I will give you some solutions to help achieve that beautiful, lush lawn the proper way without chemicals. The one major misconception about your lawn is watering. You might see in some of the marketing material you get saying “no watering required” or “no watering in required”. If you call that company about this they will tell you that Mother Nature will provide it for you. If Mother Nature provides you with 1-2 inches of water 3 times per week, I would agree but that never happens. And “no watering in required” means that the fertilizer will not burn your lawn after the application so you do not have to water it in. You still need to water your lawn. If it waters one day 2 to 3 inches that is just water for that day. Our sun dries out our gumbo clay very quick and if you keep it dry, you are giving lawn killing insects and weeds a great habitat to grow. You might get plenty of water from Mother Nature in the spring but that has to continue during the hottest part of the summer. Your lawn is just like your flowers, it needs proper watering to survive and thrive. Next is cutting your lawn. Everybody wants that golf green lawn. It is almost impossible to achieve it on a residential lawn. Thousands of dollars are spent on the golf course to achieve that look and it is a different type of grass than that on your residential lawn. The best practice for your lawn it to keep it longer (3 1/2”) and give it a mulch cut every five days. I know it is a pain to get the grass cut and that is the biggest problem. People cut the grass to short so they are able to cut it only once a week. The healthier and thicker the lawn the shorter you could cut it. A quick mulch cut every 5 days will greatly reduce the cutting time by half. Cutting a 1/4'” of the grass blade off opposed to half of the grass blade will help the lawn thrive by not shocking it. Cutting to much off shocks the lawn and you will see it turn brown and sometimes die. Next is an Aeration and introducing new grass to your lawn. Our gumbo clay compacts every winter. You must help the grass roots by aerating your lawn. This makes the roots go deeper for the water which in turn makes the grass blade stronger. Longer the root of the grass the stronger it is and the less stress and winter kill you will have. After the aeration, it is a great time to introduce new seed to your lawn. The holes and cores from the aeration improves the germination rate by giving more soil to seed contact. New grass will not grow in heavily compacted soil. If it does, it will be week and will not survive the winter or the extreme heat of the summer. These services will help thicken your lawn, they will help choke out pesky weeds and will help keep away those lawn killing insects. Aeration is one of the most important cultural practices for your lawn due to our gumbo clay and weather. Another misconception is adding regular top soil to your lawn. If you ad regular topsoil to your compacted lawn, you are just adding to the problem. Regular topsoil does not do anything to the current gumbo clay soil which loses its nutrients in about 10 years. Regular topsoil also introduces new weeds to your lawn. What you need is something like our Organics Plus Topdressing which rejuvenates old, tired soil and it is weed free. Please go to nutrilawn.com for details. Regular topsoil might add soil to seed contact for new seed but if the lawn is compacted and the current soil is tired, the new seed will not survive.

Now it is time to fertilizer and start killing those pesky weeds. The approved FIESTA weed control is derived from iron and is a natural product. We have been using it in our Organics Program, which is now called our Hybrid Program, for 4 years now. Fiesta has to be applied differently than the chemical option as it is more weather sensitive. Our 4 years of experience with it keeps the cost down as you will see once you get the competitors offers. We know how it works and how to apply it while other companies are struggling to figure it out and charge obscene amounts for it. When Fiesta is used properly, you will get results within 48 hrs, opposed to 7 days with the chemical weed control. It is safe for you, your pets and the whole family. The heartier weeds might take a couple applications but being with us and doing it right usually gets it done in one. We also use the highest grade and most environmentally friendly fertilizer which is Polyon technology. It is a granular application and one application feeds your lawn consistently for up to 60 days. You will not get those quick growth spurts that die off after a week or so then leaves your lawn starving for a few more weeks until the next application. With us your lawn receives a consistent feeding with no leaching or run off. We at Nutri-lawn ask for the opportunity to earn your business. We ask what your expectations are and put a plan together to achieve those goals. Do not give away your business. Make people earn it and we are asking for that opportunity. Without you, our business is not a business and we treat our customer’s lawn like it is our own. We know this is a customer service industry and ask for the opportunity to earn your trust.

Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church The old saying is: `Spring has sprung!`; although, as I write this, snow still covers the ground and a `sub-zero wind` still whistles through the trees! But, better things ARE coming, I`m sure! So it is with our walk with God. Yes, there are `wintry blasts` at times, but we can know that, `Better things are coming!` And, in fact, even in those trying times, God has not forsaken us, and His inner peace and joy are still ours: Jesus declares: `Surely, I will be with you always.` (Matthew 28:20) Spring HAS sprung!` And `new life in Christ`is indeed ours to receive and enjoy! ALWAYS! Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the LUD Hall in Richer. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. We will continue to have Church Services in Richer until the re-opening of our Paradise Village Recreation Center. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Heather Burnell or Vice President, Dennis Hall.
MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870. LADIES Outing and Lunch: takes place each month and all ladies are welcome to come for a time of great fellowship at various places...Rides can be arranged. Call either Erna Martens or Heather Burnell for details.

ixteen singles stopped by Rod Gates place for yet another great evening meal. Rod’s home is for sale but we wish he would not leave us as he is a perfect host! He even challenged us with a questionnaire about Canada’s provinces. When asked if there was a prize for the winner, Rod said, ”Yes, me!” However, there were too many tied for first place so no prize was awarded!! The ladies were disappointed. Thank you for the amusement Rod, we are all somewhat more knowledgeable about our own country. Susan Vanderwerf was welcomed to the group. Good to meet you, Susan! We celebrated Larry Menec’s natal day with a toast and a cake, of course. It was Pat’s chocolate cake and is everyone’s favourite. We look forward to our next get- together at Larry’s, 18 Village Drive, on Monday May 4th. Please come and bring a sample of your favourite recipe and/or libation. All singles are most welcome. Note Please call the host or hostess to let them know if you plan to attend so the host can prepare ahead for numbers. Larry can be reached at 204 422 5712

PARADISE SQUARES INFORMATION After cancelling dancing for the month of March, our dancing resumed on April 7th with a good turnout. It was great to have the dancers who wintered away return. Paradise Squares will have done a Demo on April 27th at Bethesda Place in Steinbach. Our windup will be on May 5th at the Ste. Anne Elementary School, with a potluck of finger food etc. after dancing, to wrap up a good year. Paradise Squares are looking forward to dancing in the Recreation Hall, with startup of a new season, on September 15th. Larry Trush 29

WHO IS FRANK LEYS Retired people will occasionally say that they are busier than ever. Frank Leys will certainly attest to that. A list of what Frank does NOT do would probably be shorter than a list of what he does. He combines a willingness to help with a wealth of practical knowledge acquired from a varied work background, including work on hydro dams and transmission lines, and 24 years as an equipment operator and instructor with the City of Winnipeg. Frank, along with Laurie Evans, lobbied to have Route 39 named Paradise Road and he circulated a petition to have a lane for west-bound traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway turning left onto Paradise Road. Construction will happen this year. We have wonderful hiking trails in the forest south of the village. Frank is constantly monitoring the trail conditions and organizes the annual fall trail-grooming session. Trails have been added and they now total well over 5 kms. He built a new bridge at the "Wounded Knee Overpass". One resident was so impressed he renamed it the "Bridge Over the River Leys". Frank looks after the fire pit and organizes wiener roasts throughout the year. Frank has recently taken over the collection of tabs and drink cans for the wheelchair program. Crushing the cans in the workshop is an almost daily activity. Another activity in the workshop is woodcarving, taught by (you guessed it) Frank. He is also a member of the shop committee. Frank's wife, Doreen, coordinates the CancerCare drivers. Frank is a volunteer driver. He also helps Doreen at the annual CancerCare daffodil sale in Steinbach. Frank is the newsletter distributor, bowls with the Paradise Village league, helps people with computer or minor plumbing problems, installs door locks, realigns satellite dishes, house sits for several snowbirds, organizes breakfast and lunches out of the village and finds time to walk his dog 3 times a day. A few days ago Frank complained to me that he couldn't do anything because of the cold and snow. Take a break, Frank. You deserve it! Submitted by Larry Menec By the way, Frank wishes to thank all of the volunteer carriers who devoted his or her time to deliver the newsletters over the winter.
I would like to add that if you are looking for some unique carvings Frank Leys is the man to see. He creates Wind Wizards and they are worth purchasing for your green space and home. He also has several decoupage and framed photographs of the flora and fauna of our beautiful Paradise Village for sale. Debbie 30

Golfer’s Elbow Golfer's Elbow is a condition that causes pain on the inner side of your elbow, where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to the bony bump on the inside of your elbow. The pain may spread into your forearm and wrist. Golfer's elbow is similar to tennis elbow. But it occurs on the inside, rather than the outside, of your elbow. And it's not limited to golfers. Tennis players and others who repeatedly use their wrists or clench their fingers also can develop golfer's elbow. The pain of golfer's elbow doesn't have to keep you off the course or away from your favorite activities. With rest and appropriate treatment, you can get back into the swing of things. Golfer's elbow is characterized by:
Pain and tenderness on the inner side of your elbow. Sometimes the pain extends along the inner side of your forearm. Stiffness. Your elbow may feel stiff, and it may hurt to make a fist. Weakness. You may have weakness in your hands and wrists. Numbness or tingling. Many people with golfer's elbow experience numbness or a tingling sensation that radiates into one or more fingers — usually the ring & little fingers.
The pain of golfer's elbow may appear suddenly or gradually. The pain may get worse when you:
Swing a golf club or racket Squeeze or pitch a ball Shake hands Turn a doorknob Lift weights Pick up something with your palm down Flex your wrist
Consult your doctor if rest, ice and over-the-counter pain relievers don't ease your elbow pain and tenderness. Seek immediate care if:
Your elbow is hot and inflamed and you have a fever You can't bend your elbow Your elbow looks deformed You suspect you've broken a bone

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Submitted by Julian DeGrave A man suffered a serious heart attack and had by-pass surgery. He awakened to find himself in the care of Nuns at a Catholic Hospital. As he was recovering, a Nun asked how he was going to pay the bill. He replied, in a raspy voice, “no Health Insurance.” The Nun asked if he had money in the bank? “No money in the bank.“ He replied. The Nun asked, “Do you have a relative who could help you?” “Just a spinster sister, who is a Nun.” He said. The Nun, slightly perturbed said, “Nuns are not spinsters! Nuns are married to God.” “Then send the bill to my brother-in-law!” He replied.

Holy Cross School April 6, 2015 Dear Friends and Supporters of TABS FOR WHEELCHAIRS, It’s that time of year again when we will have the opportunity to present a specialized wheelchair to an individual because of your dedication and loyalty to the Tabs for Wheelchairs program! This year’s recipient is Bryce Thiessen. This program has been in existence since 1998 and this year we are presenting our 16th wheelchair! Thank you so much for your continued support! It is because of each and every one of you that this program has been so successful and we are truly very grateful! As always, a big thank you has to go to Dave from St. Boniface Bag who continues to supply us with our bags free of charge and to Reimer Express Lines Ltd. for transporting our tabs whenever needed. For all those who are interested, Western Scrap Metal Inc. (the company where we recycle our tabs) is continuing to provide an additional way to donate to the Tabs for Wheelchairs program. You can bring your cans or any kind of metal that you want to dispose of (even extremely large objects) and they will credit our account. Please don’t forget to mention it is for Holy Cross School (Tabs for Wheelchairs program). If we have more people doing this, we will once again be able to present two wheelchairs at one of our presentations, much faster. Last year we received $1137.15 from people contributing this way. Western Scrap is located at 18 Sutherland Ave. Thank you so much, Western Scrap, for all that you do for us! It is truly appreciated! Wesman Salvage in Brandon is doing the same thing and they have given us sizeable cheques over the last few years. Thank you, Wesman Salvage! For anyone interested in making a monetary donation, Holy Cross will send you an Income Tax receipt. We are hoping that CTV News (Channel 5) will be with us again at our presentation. Be sure to watch the 6:00 p.m. broadcast on May 21st. In closing, we would like to thank you again for saving tabs! Our presentation of Bryce’s specialized wheelchair as well as meeting next year’s recipient, Jessica, will be on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the Holy Cross School Gymnasium at 290 Dubuc St. Everyone is welcome! Sincerely,
Gwen Buccini

TABS FOR WHEELCHAIRS, JESSICA – 2015 Jessica is 18 years old and will be a Grade 12 graduate this year from Garden Valley Collegiate in Winkler. She was born with Spina Bifida and has spinal nerve damage to her lower spine and has been in a wheelchair all her life. Jessica loves photography, enjoys using her iPad and watching movies/TV series. Her wishes for the future are to become more independent and one day live on her own. To do this she would need a specialized wheelchair with the capability of being elevated, in order for her to work in the kitchen and give her greater mobility. 36

In the next issue (June) I would like to dedicate some space to be used as a forum for Questions, Comments, and Suggestions on various topics relating to living in a mobile home. For example: We experienced a freeze up of our outgoing sewer pipe (4x’s) this year and felt uneducated on how to solve the issue. I believe we have many outstanding residents who have faced many a problem with living in a mobile home and could teach the rest of us, the four W’s and H (Where, What, Why, When and How) to get through such issues. Ideas?? Email me:
