PVRA Newsletter September 2014

Page 1

September 2014

Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil It seemed like Summer was never going to get here and now it seems like it is almost over. Let’s hope for a beautiful Fall and a much nicer Winter ahead. Thank you for the kind responses and good words regarding the August newsletter. I enjoyed putting it together. My goal will be to input any and all suggestions, submissions, and information that contributes to Paradise Village and its residents. This newsletter is always looking for new advertisers as well, so feel free to ask and assist in finding future contributors. This helps the PVRA raise dollars to supplement all social functions put together by the PVRA such as Canada Day, Bonfires, and BBQ’s. The advertising dollars also pays for the printing of this newsletter and posters monthly. Also, whenever possible please encourage all residents, who have not, to pay his, hers or their membership fees. This money also goes towards Rec Centre supplies, social events, and the newsletter etc. Thank you for your support.

Paradise Village Singles - August

F

ourteen folks attended our August Pot Luck, this time at Larry Menec’s home. It was yet another fabulous feast. Birthdays of Edie Grier, Barry Knox and Irene Cunningham were celebrated. Delicious Tiramisu was served. It is made with rum and coffee-soaked ladyfingers layered with mascarpone custard and whipped cream; however, every one ignored the calorie count! Unfortunately, Irene could not attend but, some Tiramisu was saved for her. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We were excited to be invited to Val Mallens cottage at beautiful West Hawk Lake on Aug 27th. I don't imagine the place will ever be the same. Thanks Val! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A trip is planned to Assiniboia Downs for Friday, Sept 12th. No doubt it will be a galloping good time, so plan on attending. Please call Carol Stoess at 204-380-2708 so car pools can be arranged. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Our next Pot Luck is being held on Monday, Sept 8th, at 5 pm at the home of Margaret Rougeau, 40 Nature Drive. Bring a dish or contribute a beverage. All Paradise singles are welcome. Submitted by Joy Morrison

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Two Birds’ Nests A pair of Robins nested in a perch attached to our garage and had three fledglings in early summer. Around the same time a pair of Barn Swallows nested in the compound and had four fledglings. I was able to observe both nests for a time, take a few photos and videos of same. I enjoyed watching the young of both nests grow up. Alas, there was a sad ending to both nests, first the Barn Swallow nest was destroyed and the same day the young Robins left their nest, a “loose cat” in the neighbourhood made short work of them. It is common knowledge that cats on the loose take a toll on young birds, keep your cats confined! Larry Trush

A ‘Super Moon’ photographed by Larry Trush on August 10, 2014 What is a Super Moon? The phenomenon, which scientists call a perigee moon, occurs when the moon is near the horizon and appears larger and brighter than other full moons. The March 19, 2011, Super Moon was 356,577 kilometers (221,567 miles) away from Earth. The last time the full moon approached so close to Earth was in 1993. It was about 20% brighter and 15% bigger than a regular full moon.

Recipe Corner Crock Pot Yogurt - Doreen Bilyk & Debbie Kokil

4 Litres milk, preferably 3.25 BF (makes 4 to 5 500ml containers) Pour into Crock Pot, Heat on high with lid on - 3 hours Unplug. Let sit with lid on - 3 1/2 hrs (allowing milk to cool down) Stir in 1 cup Greek Yogurt (Astro Original Greek Plain 2X Protein, no Gelatin) Cover with the lid. Cover with towels & let sit on the counter at least 24 hrs, up to 36 hrs. Yogurt will be fairly runny. To strain, place cheesecloth lined sieve over bowl. Ladle yogurt into the sieve. More than 1 cheesecloth lined sieve may be required. Cover with Saran Wrap & refrigerate at least 12 hours. The longer it drains the thicker the yogurt. Add liquid back in for your choice of yogurt consistency. Add your own flavorings to sweeten such as honey, fruit, syrup, and enjoy. Reserve the whey liquid to be used in place of milk or buttermilk, for baking.

Hi Folks, I think everyone will agree, our two weeks of Folklorama were a huge success. All the shows and food were awesome and we certainly could not have asked for nicer weather. A number of you were also very lucky at the Casinos…congrats. I want to thank everyone for making the trips so special and for always being where you were supposed to be at all times. You guys are awesome!! I can’t say too much about next year yet because I don’t know any details at this time. I think having the two buses worked out well and many enjoyed both weeks (all 6 pavilions). Since I have had many requests and phone calls stating they want to go again next year, I have decided to make a reservation list at this time so those people who go away for the winter have an opportunity to sign up. The buses filled up very quickly this year, so if you don’t want to miss out…think about it now. Imagine, having to plan a year down the road! The seats are available for anyone on a first come, first serve basis, not just Paradise Village. Please call me (leave a message if I’m out) and leave your name and number and any other comments i.e. indicating if you are gone for the winter. Response will dictate which arrangements will be considered for 2015. REMINDER: The next regular Free Bus Trip to the Casinos is September 9th. If I haven’t called you, and you want to go, please give me a call. THANKS

I thought this could be of interest to all computer seniors out there! Frank Leys

A Dumb Blonde and Her Two Horses A blonde bought two horses and could not tell which was which. A neighbour suggested that she cut the tail of one horse. That worked great until the other horse got his tail caught in a bush and it tore just right looking exactly like the other horse’s tail. The blond was stuck again until the neighbour offered another suggestion, put a notch in one of the horse’s ears. That worked fine until the other horse caught his ear on a barbed-wire fence. Once again the blonde couldn’t tell them apart. The neighbour finally suggested to measure the horses for height. When the blond did this she was very pleased. It turned out that the white horse was 2 inches taller than the black horse. Submitted by Anna DeGrave 18

I don't know about you but I know that I am a worrier. Because life is sometimes difficult, and because we have understandable fears about uncertainty of the future, we worry. We may find ourselves fretting over the details of everyday life, some large and some small. It is human nature to worry about certain things but instead of spending time focusing on the negative we should be counting our blessings, taking our worries to God and leaving them there. We will learn to worry less and trust God a little more. Easier said than done at times but we should never give up. Let us get in the habit of rethinking what we are thinking about.

Give your worries to the Lord, and he will take care of you, He will never let good people down. Psalm 55:22 Please join us for our Christian Service, Sundays, at 10;00 a.m. in the LUD Hall in Richer. Following the service we have coffee, dainties and fellowship. You are all welcome. Please give Edie Grier or Dennis Hall a call if you are in need of a ride or directions, or if you have any special Prayer requests. Submitted by Heather Burnell

DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight. - Benjamin Franklin (1706-90) - American statesman, printer, writer, and scientist; one of the Founding Fathers and American representative in Paris; also a scientific innovator, particularly in electricity, and inventor of such devices as the lightning rod, bifocals and Franklin Stove.

DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY Nothing is miserable unless you think it is. - Boethius (Anicus Manlius Severinus Beothius) (ca. 480-ca. 524) Roman statesman and philosopher, often called “the last of the Romans”; unjustly condemned for treachery; while in prison composed his most famous work The Consolation of Philosophy. 26

July 26th Hamburger/Hotdog BBQ - Postponed by one day because of rain and…. It was a wonderful way for everyone to once again get together for fun and friendship. Although the skies threatened to once again open up, the sun came out just in time for supper. And what a great supper it was. Thanks to our cooks who cooked the hamburgers and hot dogs perfectly. Thanks to the ladies who gave their time and energy to make the beans, potato salad and coleslaw. After we filled our stomachs we were serenaded by “The Jammers”. Thanks so much Great Job. Congratulations to whomever won the fifty-fifty draw. I am so sorry but I am having a Senior Moment and have forgotten your name. Congratulations again. Perhaps I have lived in the Village too long. Lastly I would like to thank everyone who helped with this event. It takes almost an army to put these events on and I could not do it without your help. Rose McDonald
