FILM IN FOCUS
RIDING THE SUBWAY HAS NEVER BEEN SO GRIPPING IF YOU EVER THOUGHT THAT YOUR DAILY PUBLIC TRANSPORT COMMUTE IS A REAL HASSLE, THEN BE ASSURED THAT AFTER WATCHING LIAM NEESON IN THIS LATEST THRILLER, YOU WILL BE MORE THAN THANKFUL THAT YOU ARE NOT IN HIS CARRIAGE.
D
irected by Jaume Collet-Serra, The Commuter sees Liam Neeson, once again, making use of his special set of skills of escaping from life-or-death situations — and this time it’s on a train! Playing the role of insurance salesman, Michael Woolrich, the film unfolds in a New York subway as Michael’s mundane commute home takes a sinister twist and quickly becomes anything but routine. The premise of the movie does give off similarities to that of a previous Neeson and Collet-Serra action-thriller: Non-Stop, so it’s not surprising, or anything new to see montages of Neeson beating people up, running up and down carriages -and of course all whilst on the phone.
In The Commuter Neeson’s unassuming character Michael is approached by a mysterious woman (Vera Farmiga) who draws him into a dangerous proposition where he must uncover the secret identity of a passenger who is not whom he/she appears to be. And all before the train’s last stop. As things unfold, the circumstances get more and more intense. People get hit by buses, hostage situations arise, the train begins to derail, and, of course, we see Neeson do what he does best: negotiate and kick some ass. If not Nesson will be left to face the deadly consequences: a very agonizing one-way ticket to his final destination.
Director: Jaume Collet-Serra | Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery | Cast: Liam Neeson, Vera Farmiga, Sam Neill Release Date: In cinemas across Qatar 18th January | QH Fun Fact: Liam Neeson and Sam Neill are both Irish actors and were both contenders for the role of James Bond in Golden Eye. None of the two got the role.

CELEBRITY FEATURE
ACCORDING TO MS PALTROW
A NEW YEAR FULL OF PROMISE – AND AT QH WE’LL BE MAKING SOME NEW PROMISES TO OURSELVES. AND WE’LL BE LOOKING TO GWYNETH PALTROW FOR ALL THINGS WELLNESS.
14
CELEBRITY FEATURE
G
wyneth Paltrow – the award winning film star who achieved the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her role in Shakespeare in Love in 1998, which also brought her world wide recognition, is the most incredibly versatile actress who has starred in so many films – Emma, Sliding Doors, A Perfect Murder, Possession, Sylvia … to name but a few. She has a wonderful singing voice and also has a talent for adopting accents although she is American has perfected an English accent which is authentic and precise but spoken with a softness that conveys her beauty within. As well as being truly talented, Gwyneth Paltrow is a devoted mother to her beautiful children and is dedicated to her charity work including her role in
Save The Children. And it’s no wonder that, with her flawless complexion and as someone who radiates calm and serenity, she was chosen to be the face of Estee Lauder’s Pleasure perfume. Her commitment to charity has run seamlessly through her role with Estee Lauder, donating substantial sums from her sales of perfume to charity. Gwyneth Paltrow is someone we very much admire and we’ve been engrossed in her lifestyle website, Goop, which has shown us a whole new approach to living well. And it starts at the beginning of each new day. Instead of rushing our morning routine, we’re going to slow down and take pleasure in every sensation – maybe start with some gentle exercise, followed by a refreshing shower, moisturizing and finally a light and healthy
breakfast. Goop has a whole range of totally unique beauty products, which are organic, luxurious and effective. But Goop is so much more than that: the website provides us with endless fascinating information, insights and ideas. Dry body brushing is one of those ideas – use a soft but firm brush to stimulate and invigorate in the morning. It’s energizing and easy to incorporate into the morning beauty routine. And it’s essential to massage the whole body with oil. The importance of facial cleansing cannot be over stated: it’s so easy to use oils and creams and overlook this essential beauty routine. Goop emphasizes that beauty starts from within and Gwyneth Paltrow is an advocate of clean eating as well as clean
beauty. Her cookbooks are an inspiration and encourage us to celebrate cooking, eating and sharing, with delicious recipes and beautiful photographs. It’s not about being selfish or self-indulgent and beauty from within goes even further than eating organic food and staying hydrated by drinking the purest water – all of which affects our glow. It’s about how we interact with the world. Gwyneth Paltrow’s relationship with the environment is one of kindness, consideration and generosity. She is clearly concerned about ocean pollution and as well as raising awareness, donates to this very worthy environmental cause. So our final promise to ourselves is this: we will take care of ourselves because we can then, like Gwyneth Paltrow, give so much more.

IT’S HAPPENING
THE COLOR
RUN
WITH THE COLOR RUN HAPPENING THIS MONTH IN DOHA, GET READY FOR A COLORFUL PARADE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY. BUT IF YOU’RE STILL HESITANT, OR NOT AWARE OF WHAT THIS FUN IS ALL ABOUT, KRISTEN INTERNATIONAL DIRECTOR AT BIGSLEY GIVES US THE 101 ON WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT.
1. For those who don’t know and are new to a Color Run, how would you describe this event? Known as “the Happiest 5K on the Planet,” The Color Run presented by Sahtak Awalan: Your Health First is all about fun! It is a five-kilometer, un-timed event in which thousands of participants, or “Color Runners,” are doused from head to toe in different colors at each kilometer. Everyone ends up looking like human rainbows! There are no winners and no competition -- you can walk, run, cartwheel or dance to the finish line.
2. The Color Run is now a global success, how did it all start and why?
The Color Run was created to provide a non-threatening running environment for all levels to enjoy. Travis Snyder, the founder of The Color Run, wanted to add a visual component to the event to serve as an aesthetic reward for all of the participants who completed the race. His inspiration came from day-glow events, Disney’s World of Color and color festivals throughout the world. The Color Run is the original paint race and is now the single largest event series in the world with more than 1,000 events in 35+ countries.
3. 3 things we should know before joining this year’s Color Run?
UNICORNS, unicorns, unicorns. The Color Run Dream Tour means unicorn everything...
18
and people love it! New this year is a brand new Color Zone, Dream Wall, and best of all... a FOAM ZONE!
4. What can people expect at the end of Doha’s Color Run?
After crossing the finish line, Color Runners will enjoy the Finish Festival where they can dance and party in front of a giant stage, find unique photo opportunities and join in on massive color throws!
5. Any plans on expanding such event, or adding more fun to the mix?
We receive thousands of suggestions from our Color Runners every year to improve the event. We change our theme each year and offer new t-shirts, course elements and more – stay tuned!
6. What is required to participate in the run?
Your ticket will give you everything you need! To make it extra fun, we suggest wearing your event t-shirt so you can see just how colorful you end up at the end!
The Color Run is back to QNCC on Saturday 27. Gates will open at 7am and the first Color Runners will set off at 8.30am. Register at www. thecolorrun.qa
Painting by Rodrigo Panameño
get cul tured WITH A NEW YEAR, NEW ARTISTS ARE COMING THROUGH, PLUS QH SITS DOWN WITH ERDEN KENDIGELEN FOR AN INSIGHT ON WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A GENERAL MANAGER AT ONE OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS HOTELS IN THE CITY.
ARTIST FEATURE
DOHA’S NEW
HIDDEN GEM ARCHITECT AND PAINTER RODRIGO PANAMEÑO, GETS CANDID ABOUT HIS ARTISTIC PASSIONS AND STRUGGLES. BUT DESPITE BEING YOUNG, THE ARTIST IS SET TO LEAVE A MARK WITH WHAT HE DOES BEST – ONE-OF-A-KIND PIECES.
What got you interested in art?
In my occasion it wasn’t much of an interest that got me into art, it was something that just became normal to me as I grew up and was able to pick it up. I had always been an artsy kid, in the way that I realized I had an ability of creativity, as well as to be able to draw or paint better than kids my age. As I grew up what really got me interested in art is how it can make you escape time by using your imagination, being able to spend hours doodling, blocking your surroundings. Apart from that what really drove my interest is how you are able to create a visual image from your mind, without having to explain in words what you visualize. You are able to re-create things that you see in your head, and being able to fully see it.
Is art only your hobby/passion or is it your full-time job? No, art is neither my only hobby nor passion I have. Currently I have just graduated with a BA Honours in Architecture, so my full time job for now is being an architect, and I have always used art as the hobby I do when I get
20
free time from studying or working. Apart from architecture I have just recently got interested into fashion, more specifically customizing and modifying clothing pieces, accessories, bags and shoes by incorporating my art into these elements.
What is your creative process when you start an art piece?
My creative process when staring on an art piece really depends on what specifically I am doing. However, I usually just try to remember things that I like, as my style of art is realism however with a twist of pop art/comical/surrealism; as to me that is way more interesting than straight up realism in my opinion or to my likings. So I usually pick an animal, portrait, object of some sort and firstly start to visualize how I can create a colour palette that will really stand out and “pop” to the public. My colour palette usually paint consists of very bright and colours that are out there. After choosing or having an idea, I find ways to distort the real shape of what I’m painting through the colours. I find ways in which the colours create the shape, whether it would be in an abstract way or a realistic style.
An artist that I would truly love to collaborate with would have to be Peter Terrin. He isn’t famously well known like other artists, however the way he depicts portraits through his style truly astounds and captivates me. I love the colour palette he picks for his art pieces, and how they provoke certain emotional feelings of a specific portrait and being able to bring it out. I have recently started to get inspired by his method of painting, using only the palette knife, I have incorporated this style in a couple of my pieces and it is a style I plan to keep practicing. Not only the way he paints, but also his art is both contemporary but at the same time realistic, creating a contemporary effect through a colour palette.
Who is your greatest inspiration?
I do not have one person I truly aspire but more of a group of people that really inspire me. Such as my family and the friends I meet as I learn something from each and every one of them that is truly inspirational. I collect different inspirations from various people, I find it quite hard to just have one strong person that inspires me, when you can have variety with different inspirations, shaping you to become the best that you can be.
What are some challenges you’ve had to overcome as an artist?
My challenges vary; they are more like worries to me. Thankfully my family has always supported me and in what I am truly passionate in, without restrictions – regardless of culture, whether it is seen as a ‘real’ major, or ‘job’. Challenges I’ve had to overcome would be having time to truly create what I want and let my creativity flow, as most of the time I’m commissioned specific ideas for art or paintings, which diminishes my creativity as clients want specific styles, objects, etc. Another challenge that not only I, but many artists struggle is, finding recognition outside of their inner circle – a challenge I am still overcoming and trying to get the public to recognize my work, however nowadays thanks to social media it is becoming much easier.
Your favourite gallery or exhibition?
My favourite gallery that I always truly enjoy and get inspired by every time I visit is Saatchi Gallery located in South Kensington, London. They feature new exhibitions/work around every two weeks or so. They exhibit from a range of renowned to small growing artists. What always brings me back to Saatchi Gallery is the type of art they exhibit, mostly consists of contemporary art, and not only paintings but fascinating installations, too. The artistic style I aspire for and push to create.
If you could describe your artistic techniques, what would it be?
My artistic technique to be honest varies, however it’s consistent at the same time. The medium mostly used in all my art is acrylic, as the colours tend to pop out and seem “plastic” which fits with my pop style I like, however I use oil for pieces that need better blending with colours. The kind of art I create I would best describe it as smooth, but with hints of bright colours and painted with two main techniques: smooth brush strokes, or knife palette, which contrasts the strokes with the rest. Mostly for my backgrounds I tend to use the knife palette, not mixing the colours together so it contains different hints of the colours into one stroke, this to me makes the background look more appealing and interesting, instead of plain and smooth.
Favourite spot in Doha?
Quite a difficult decision as I enjoy many spots in Doha, however if I have to pick my favourite one it would have to be any high floored restaurant because one, I love eating, and two, I enjoy being able to see the city keep its course while feeling time has stopped up high. Also being an architect I enjoy having a different perspective of the city from just looking at it from my car, looking down at the busy streets of West Bay, the traffic, people. Another favourite spot would have to be Sealine Desert, I come from a country where we tend to frequently visit such settings. The calmness and relaxation of the water with the sun makes me feel very relaxed and at ease.
What would be your ultimate goal as an artist? This is kind of a far stretch but my ultimate goal as an artist would have to be recognition worldwide within artists and art enthusiasts, and to one day be able to hold my own art exhibition. Not only exhibition, but as well to one day own my own art gallery exhibiting my paintings, having my own studio where the public gets a glimpse of me working and in my space, and at the same time view/purchase my work.

If you had the opportunity to create a piece of art, whom would your dream collaboration be with?
LOCAL SPOTLIGHT
General Manager:
Erden Kendigelen GENERAL MANAGER ERDEN KENDIGELEN FROM RITZCARLTON, DOHA GAVE QH AN INSIGHT ON WHAT IT TAKES TO BE AT THE HELM FOR SUCH LUXURIOUS AND PROMINENT PROPERTY.
How long have you been in Doha, and have you had previous experience in the Gulf ?
It has been three wonderful years in Doha and we moved here from New York – this is my first experience outside of US and could not imagine another place in Gulf other than Doha because of the warm people, rich culture and safe environment.
As General Manager of Ritz-Carlton, Doha - what has been the most exciting thing you’ve been part of within the property?
Property wide re-imagination was the most exciting and rewarding experience during my tenure at the property. In an effort to keep up with today’s luxury hotel trends, we reveled a fresh look through the renovation of all 374 guestrooms and suites, Fantastic VIP Club Lounge, and state of the art Spa facilities. It feels like having a new baby and thankful to Katara Hospitality for tremendous support.
The workforce is one of the most important assets in every company, how do you uplift the morale of your co-workers?
My leadership style is all about building strong relations by creating trust. Without trust there’s less morale, innovation, collaboration, creative thinking, and productivity, and people spend their time protecting themselves and
22
their interests. Trust is essential to an effective team, because it provides a sense of safety and confidence. When your ladies and gentlemen feel safe with each other, they feel comfortable to open up, take appropriate risks, and expose vulnerabilities.
What are your thoughts about tourism in Qatar in the upcoming year, and what is the current occupancy in the hotel?
We are increasing our market share rapidly and attracting new business sources as we recently completed our property reimagination. No one has a crystal ball and can accurately predict what will happen in the future in terms of 2018 market condition but I am sure of this very thing, Qatar tourism will be growing stronger every day and all of us are working extremely hard to support our destination by working closely with QTA.
What can we expect in 2018 for such prominent hotel?
Our iconic hotel has been re-imagined to offer Doha’s most modern residential and innovative room, VIP Club Level and World Class Spa experiences, alongside our unique heritage and legendary Ritz-Carlton service. We are the pioneer of luxury, and
prestigious address of the memorable, unique and unforgettable experiences that I can promise you to deliver in 2018.
How would you define success?
Not liking but loving what you do every day by being passionate, engaged, committed and feeling like you make a difference in people’s lives whether employees or guests.
Could you share with us your favorite book, music and place?
Place is definitely Istanbul where I grew up before moving abroad. No particular music but the book is “Fit for Life” which helped to change my eating habits and guide me to lose 40 kgs about 7 years ago.
What are some lessons you’ve learned within the industry that could serve as advice to young and aspiring adults?
Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great! Get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself every day by looking for ways to be better than yesterday. Regardless of your position or place; always keep in mind; without full disclosure communication there is no relationship, without respect there is no love, without trust there is no reason to continue.

CULTURE TALK
Nostalgic Objects ARTIST AISHA AL SOWAIDI, A MULTIDISCIPLINARY DESIGNER BASED IN DOHA, CREATES A VERY UNIQUE FORM OF ART – DESIGNS THAT EXPRESS THE FAST DEVELOPMENT IN QATAR. IN A CANDID INTERVIEW THE ARTIST HERSELF SHARES HER THOUGHTS ON THE TOPIC. You work a lot on memory, nostalgia and traces of time through your designs – can you name one city that evokes nostalgia for you? What are your thoughts on Qatar’s fast growing city?
Development is a necessity in every city, culture, and society. However, we are witnessing an extremely fast change in pace than normal. This of course, affects the society in many ways; we are attached to our roots, which makes an interesting balance between moving forward and preserving the past.
Ah of course, London – Kensington high street in particular. I believe it was an important time in my childhood where I built a lot of memories. What’s fascinating is that it hasn’t changed so much.
How did you prepare for Berlin’s exhibition?
You explore the old experience with contemporary designs in objects to feel right at home. What objects make you feel at home?
I think home is a mental state of mind. Once a place become familiar, it turns into a home. My attempts in designing objects that make a place more familiar are in making the person surrounded by objects and experience from the past through redesigning objects used in the house. Objects that we interact with but don’t necessarily notice are important in obtaining the feeling of being home, like the door handle, depth of the stairs, height of the ceiling.
What is one thing you wish wouldn’t change with the country’s fast growing journey? Heritage, believes, and society’s unity. These are important pillars that need to be constant.
How do you see Qatar in the next two years?
I see it more established in the art scene. Art events, exhibitions, museum openings, and the art community are all growing as well, which will enrich the art scene in Doha of course. And I’m very much looking forward to that.
As I work at the fire station Artists Residency, I’m exposed to many artists and their work. The selections were mostly from the Artists Residency artwork, as well as few others from outside the Residency. The contemporary art sections is called Articulating the Particular, which reflect how we try to define what’s been defined by artists themselves. Also, what artists have defined is also defined by time and space around us. It’s a repetitive action of defining what’s defined over again. Of course, I explain the work as curator of the exhibition (along with my colleague Dr. Bahaa Abudaya).
What are some traditions you wish to have around in the next five years?
I respect the change and accept it, trying to revive a fine tradition will only make it appear as fake. However, I enjoy new traditions we add to our society here in Qatar, such as the National Day. I call it a tradition because it’s a festive time and people build their own events around it, which makes it a cultural habit, therefore a tradition.

Gordon Ramsay: Where are you from? Sofia Graniello: From El Salvador, Central
America. Have you been before? GR:I have been to Honduras and Colombia. Loved it, loved it.
SG: But I know you’re originally from Scotland… GR: Long time ago, long time ago. I was
only born there, but didn’t grow up there.
SG: My partner is from Scotland! GR: You’ve got great taste. SG: Well, since I’ve never been to Scotland, what would be one dish you would recommend to try if I ever visit? GR: Um well, I wouldn’t recommend Black
Pudding because that’s just…you don’t look like a Black Pudding girl. So I would say, Cullen Skink, which is a smoked haddock, potatoes and onion soup, finished with a cream valutor, but beautiful. Sounds slightly bizarre, but yeah, the broth smoked haddock it’s beautiful.
SG: What about your favourite dish from the region? GR: Oh depends who I’m with. If I’m having dinner with my wife, then it’ll be fish, or if dinner with my son Jack, then we would go

crazy for a T-bone steak. Also I like to eat depending on the climates, so uh yeah, I’m a fuzzy eater – which I think it’s good.
SG: One ingredient or spice you dislike cooking with? GR: As a chef’s journey, my aim was to discover as many ingredients as possible and never know what to do with them.
SG: And why did you choose to allocate your restaurants at St. Regis Doha? GR: There is a small soccer tournament
happening in 2022, guaranteed tickets to the final, and maybe go and do the food during half time. We had a huge success in the region, so it felt natural to place them here, Doha I would sort of describe it as, I suppose, the sleeping beauty of the region – it’s happening rapidly. And also, there are some very cool brands here, such as a Nobu, Hakkasan, Jean-Georges, and then, The St. Regis in terms of a brand globally it’s one of the most beautiful sought-after five star luxurious hotels anyway.
SG: What are your thoughts about your kids following your footsteps? GR: That’s a really good question. You know for me, food education is important and they would learn how to cook anyway. They were cooking since Nennah the Grasshopper. If they do follow my footsteps, they would
have to work under another chef for exciting experiences, also it wouldn’t be fare to employ them within my group, in terms of: “That’s the boss’ son, or the boss’ daughter.” It’s not fare on the team. I know it’s a quite discipline rule. But Tilly, our youngest is a natural; she is buoyant, funny, witty and a 15-year-old. If she follow’s her daddy’s footsteps, I just want her to find her passion, and once she has, I’m gonna back it.
SG: Do you give her any advice? GR: Yeah, I give them all advice, being a
parent. She says, “Dad your food is fuzzy, mine is full of flavour.” She has a simple approach, I have a complex approach, but I suppose the advice I give her is to train your palate, close your eyes and identify what you’re eating. But it’s ironic, this Saturday she is having her first book signing at Whole Foods in Kensington high street and the event has sold out. And she was very nervous and asked: “How would you do a book signing?” And I said: “Tilly, these young girls and guys are waiting all day to come and see you.” So she showed me her table setting and I said: “Please do me a favor, don’t sit down, stand up in a high chair because how weird would that look, you are sitting down and they’ve been standing up for 2 hours to come and see you.” So she sent an email to Whole Foods and she’s asked for a high top table and wants to stand and sign her books as opposed to sitting down.

You found your passion for cooking at a very young age, is what you believe you were - as the saying goes, “born to cook”?
Yes, I believe I found that cooking was my true passion at an early age, which made me realise that I was born to cook. It is a passion that turned into profession and I was truly inspired by my family, of whom many were Chefs. I remembered seeing them work in their white chef jackets and loved the idea of pursuing a career as a chef.
combination of great team work and our love for hospitality in general, that has contributed to the success of this themed night.
The Filipino street food concept at Al Thouraya has received tremendous positive response from diners, what would you say has contributed to this theme night success?
That is because we decided to focus the dishes on authentic Filipino street style, wanting to make diners feel like they are ‘having a home away from home’ experience within the dishes, creating a sense of comfort. We involved all our Filipino Chefs in the process and it has truly proven to be a

What are your essential ingredients, the things you couldn’t live without?
As corny as it may sound, I think ‘love’ is the secret ingredient. For when you love what you do, this will make all the difference to the dishes you prepare. There truly isn’t anything better than preparing food with love to hungry diners.
People have become very switched on about food recently, with everyone talking about things like seasonal and local produce. What excites you about food now? Yes, you are right. And people have become much more conscious about ingredients. For me the most exciting thing about food, now more than ever, is to keep trying something new. I try to push myself to betterment with using different ingredients and to focus on local produce.
From your Arabic roots and specializing in Arabic cuisine, how have you adapted and managed to bring Filipino dishes to Al Thouraya restaurant?

To be honest, I was introduced to Filipino cuisine here in Qatar. I find that in this part of the world our experience largely influences our cooking styles as well. The Lowdown
With its manicured gardens, overflowing fountains and well-lit open spaces, The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa is the epitome of tranquility. It serves as a sanctuary to individuals who need to unwind and step away from their busy city routines. In the heart of the hotel, lies the treasured gem that is Heavenly Spa. Nestled within it’s own leafy interior garden, this spa is a great example of the ideal space for those who are on a journey to wellness. Knowing all this, I could not pass up the opportunity to be part of The Westin Doha’s first exclusive invitational wellness retreat and enjoy some much needed peace in this little piece of heaven.
The Other Side Of Wellness
Too often we forget that wellness isn’t solely about relaxation, introspection and reflection. There’s a wholeness to it that goes beyond setting time aside to recuperate
52
from life’s busyness. It’s also about ensuring we look after our bodies by keeping fit and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Liubov Brailak is one of The Westin’s fully certified in-house personal trainers. She led us through the high intensity workout for the evening and it was electric. She wasn’t too hard on our small group because of the different fitness levels, but she brought great intensity to the training session. Liubov is the type of fitness expert that understands the balance between the mind and the body, and this is an absolute necessity as a wellness ambassador. In fact, I was so taken with her style of training, and her overall embodiment of balance that I signed her up to be my full time personal trainer. And our journey has been nothing short of excellent thus far.
Getting Centered
Outdoor early morning yoga in the landscaped, tranquil gardens near the poolside is certainly a perfect start to
HEALTH FEATURE ones day. There’s a certain peace that comes from deep breathing and feeling every muscle in your body stretch and actually being present in every moment of each movement. The Holistic Medicine & Mindfulness session with Evolve could not have come at a better time. Farah from Evolve incorporates modern conceptions and ideologies based around health and wellbeing.
Detox And Jet Lag Treatment QR800 (90 minutes)
The end to our retreat culminated in an incredible massage at Heavenly Spa. The detox treatment not only reduces the appearance of cellulite, it also tackles fluid retention in the stomach and legs. The body is brushed & wrapped to revive and relax the limbs and muscles. The cupping then does the second job of deep drainage, and the massage is the final blitz to ensure the body is fully exfoliated and the lymph system is working at an optimal level.

ACTIVE MIND
NOT YOUR REGULAR NEW YEAR NEW YEAR, NEW YOU? PSYCHOLOGIST MARTYN STEWART WEIGHTS IN ON THE TERM: NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION.
A
re you bored of the same new year’s articles? I am. Sometimes I think it’s not even worth buying a new magazine, we could just pick up last years’ copy! The only difference is the year! However, if you are sick of them too, then we need something different. No complaints or excuses about how hard our life has been or debating about who’s had it worse. That can be challenging as the new year sentiment can often make us giddy with the anticipation of what is possible. Everybody’s been caught in the hype at some point. It can be an exciting time with everybody seemingly on the same page under the celebrations and fireworks. However, to make a change, we all need support, but a new year can start any time. The keyword is NEW! If the only difference in your experience is the date on the calendar but the selfdeceptive lies and excuses remain then we’re in trouble. If you’re hoping the brilliant future you wished for last year will fall out of the sky, you have another thing coming. Actually, you don’t. You have the SAME thing coming. Absolutely nothing. This is not what we want. The hardest part of a new start is admitting our vulnerability and that, most of the time, we have no idea where to begin. We can feel crushed under the perceived pressure and expectation in our lives, to keep things going, when we just want to drop. And still,
60
without the correct or attributes, we project the façade and boldly announce ‘New Year, New You’ just like last year. There’s no shame in admitting we do not possess the skills to be where we’d like to be. We’re not born with them. If you’ve been crossing off the weeks to the new year, waiting for January 1st to be your catalyst to action, I understand. It’s the perfect mental illusion. We can rid our lives of old habits and past baggage; delete useless
ACTIVE MIND
mobile numbers, clear-out the social media and start looking for that new job. Actually, we could have done all of these things weeks ago, there was nothing stopping us. However, the daily cycle of unfulfilling relationships, careers and routines is easy to get stuck in; especially when we socialise with people who suck the positivity out of our lives like a dementor from Harry Potter. It’s ok, to feel stuck in rut. It happens to us all, more than once in life; but we don’t have to wait for the new year to drag ourselves out of it. Our brain only knows it’s January 1st because we tell it. However, seeing as it is here, let’s make the most of the positive energy around us! Let’s start by surrounding ourselves with opportunities, people and situations that really bring the best out of us. No more excuses or social pandering. And don’t be scared when that new year’s energy, (inevitably), wanes in others who slip back into their normal routines. You might be the last one standing and your own familiar habits, excuses and self-sabotaging mentality will look awfully tempting. You just want to bury yourself away for a little while, but come September, you look up and the hole is so deep that January 1st 2019, is shining above like the light at the end of the tunnel. Don’t fall for it. Some of use the new year positively and some of us don’t. Some of us resist temptation to follow, as the world has us all targeted on the same thing. The positivity can encourage us to appreciate our relationships, health, career and attitude to life. It drives the impetus, focus and motivation to leave any toxicity or stale aspects behind in search of a fresh start. How people last in this mindset is down to the individual, it depends on how long you can stick it out!
However, some of us don’t need to flagpost the month of January as the start of a ‘new year’. We can press the reset button at any hour, on any date. Countries like China, Thailand and Bangladesh all celebrate different ‘new year’ dates. The real ‘New Year, New You’, is not expecting old habits to produce new results. It is learning the skills we lack is necessary, even if it takes a long time. There is no secret and we often sabotage ourselves by thinking there is - then looking for blame elsewhere. The real new year starts with changing yourself with DAILY ACTION. Your brain only knows it’s a new year because you tell it. When you truly recognise you have made a consistent and productive change in mindset; and you KNOW you’re not going back! That is a true happy new year!

T
he New Year is just around the corner, a high season for gyms and nutrition centers alike. It’s the time of year you resolve to wake up early, get healthy, and work harder. Of course, by now, we all know that it takes a lot more than making a resolution to change our lifestyle. It takes real planning and, of course, joining the right program. So how can we simplify our approach to exercise and still get outcomes? In my programs I focus on 3 types of exercise: Strength Training, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), and Low Intensity Steady State (LISS) cardio. Strength Training and HIIT are meant to boost your metabolism overall and tone the body. Equipment is not needed here! The most common exercises my clients do include lunges, squats, sit-ups, bird-dog, and simplified push-ups. And for HIIT we do mountain climbers, burpees, knee highs, and sprints. All the workouts can also be
64
ACTIVE BODY done at home. The beauty of strength training and HIIT is you only need to do them 2-3 times a week for 45 minutes to see a difference! Add LISS cardio to your 2 days of Strength and HIIT and you’re good to go! LISS cardio (like walking) is a great way for beginners to get a workout in without injuring themselves or feeling overwhelmed. You can do from 2 to 4 days of LISS, 45 minutes each, and your plan is bullet proof.

Take a Peek Into My Room:
Staycations have always been my attempt to spend some quality time with my husband and boys, and be able to get away from my monotonous and yet, hectic daily routine. With an opulent lobby and welcoming staff, our arrival was a pleasant special express check-in, which subsequently directed us straight to our fabulous rooms. Of course, this was already a heart kick start to our family’s 2-night stay and thrilled to what was coming next.
We were offered 2 deluxe interconnected resort view rooms amongst the 174 luxurious rooms and suites housed in 14 traditionally Arabic courtyard villas. Our room welcomed us with a king-size hand-made trader’s wooden four-poster bed, Qatari chests, lanterns, all well-thought-out finishing touches that add a splash of culture, while still keeping things tastefully elegant.
Sharq Village & Spa – A Ritz Carlton Hotel is a luxury beachfront resort set along one kilometer of private coastline, overlooking Doha Bay. The resort has been designed to reflect a traditional Qatari village blended with authentic Arabic architecture and the very latest in modern comforts and amenities. With the arrangement of the courtyards, alleys and pathways, it provides a unique get away that represents the heritage and culture of Qatar with a perfect blend of a luxury resort.
The prime attraction of our rooms was the balcony overlooking the pool and perfectly manicured lawns featuring a small table with two wooden carved cushiony armchairs, but of course the highlight was listening to the sounds of the saxophone being played at the Cyan Lounge after 8pm.
When you visit the hotel, it feels as though you are transported to a different location that is far away from the city hustle. This is, however, located in Doha, 15min from the city center and minutes away from Hamad International Airport.

Speaking of the bathrooms that included a soaking bath tub and a separate glass-enclosed cabinet ornamented with Asprey London toiletries, which gained extra brownie points for me.
Infinity Pool with a View
Extra Touches:
Embracing the aura of Orient with dramatic architecture and an enhancing landscape of courtyards and lawns, we loved their infinity pool the most, which draws the eyes to the horizon with its inviting glimpses of the sea beyond. Both pools are so inviting that even if you don’t want to get wet, you’d definitely at least want to snap some pics at their royal canopied pool side cabanas. My husband and I found the beach pretty tranquil making it perfect for some quiet time while the kids had their fun at the Ritz-Kids club. The Six Senses Spa at the resort also offers some innovative and enriching experiences. The resort’s major highlight includes an exclusive Royal Villa aptly-named “Beit Al Shyoukh” inspired by traditional ornate sheikh’s palace.

Come Dine with Me:
I am quite picky when it comes to food, but being pleasantly surprised by the quality of food available at the resort was definitely a plus point that makes this place a worthwhile come back. Sharq Village currently offers six dining options, and as it was a Thursday we were lucky enough to experience the Seafood Night at Al Liwan Restaurant, from grilled lobsters and prawns to fresh oysters on the shell and live music, this is definitely a one-stop dining destination for seafood lovers. Upon Chef Francis special recommendation, I was lucky enough to taste one of the best grilled fish in the longest time. After the most restful night sleep we headed for our buffet breakfast, served at Al Liwan. The buffet was plentiful, with a ream of live cooking stations. fresh fruit, eggs bennies, cheese selections and fresh juices, straight-off-the-griddle waffles and pancakes. This filling breakfast lead our way walking through the pretty pathways of the resort to spend our day on the powdery white sand beach. Enjoying a variety of activities and water sports (kayak, pedal boats, kite flying) we were ready to taste authentic Persian delicacies for lunch at the Parisa restaurant. Everything about Parisa is ostentatious from food, the interior design and the view. The grilled mix we ordered was really copious served with several types of rice. Our evening was spent at the infinity pool. We were not up to plunge a full dinner so we enjoyed a few bubbly drinks and light snacks at the Cyan Lounge. The romantic ambiance at the Cyan Lounge with live music was much needed after a long beach day. Last but no least, our culinary highlight was Saturday’s brunch, available at only QR250. The buffet showcases a conglomeration of steak, seafood, Italian, Arabic and Indian cuisines.

The Menu
Dinner in the resort is a marriage of nature and tradition, with the outcome being a culinary offering of Macedonia delicacies. As seclude as the resort is, staying in for dinner is not a worry; fish, meat and salads are all of high quality. This does not come as a surprise as the kitchen reflects explicit attention to detail coupled with extremely fresh products procured from the local region. And from the kitchen, the restaurant’s highly skilled team of chefs are dedicated in providing top-shelf gastronomic experiences. The restaurant offers the best traditional Macedonian food. The list is endless, but standout dishes are the homemade pastries [Zelnik] with their original white feta cheese from the region. Added to that list are seasonal organic fruit and vegetables such as local potatoes, which are prepared in many different ways, and Kachamak, which is Macedonian version of Polenta. A must try dessert is Babina Torta, a type of walnut cake, this is as traditional as it can get when it comes to dessert, and lovingly referred to as made by ‘grandma’s recipe’.
